A workshop to examine recovery systems for selected strategic and critical materials in the U.S. National Seabeds for the National Defense Stockpile in the 21st Century was held in Hawaii September 26-28, 1991, sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Marine Mineral s Technology Center. The National Defense Stockpile of critical and strategic mineral commodities is presently in a deficit position of more than 7.5 billion dollars. Current domestic reserves of some commodities are limited or nonexistent. As defined by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, "Reserves are select resources . . . which at the time of classification, can be mined at a profit." Occurrences of these minerals have been discovered offshore within U.S. jurisdiction. If the technology could be developed to convert these resources into usable ore reserves, our dependence on foreign ores could be greatly reduced. Preliminary estimates indicate that a ten-year program of ore reserves definition, with appropriate technical developments to demonstrate a recovery system, could cost less than half the amount authorized for stockpile acquisition in FY 1989 alone.

Diamond production from the reworked beach and river channel gravels along the west coasts of South Africa and Namibia is well known throughout the world, not only for the exceptional quality of the diamonds, but also for the sheer scope of the operations. To date an estimated 140 million carats have been produced from the resource worth some US$40 billion in today's money terms. It is therefore not surprising that it didn't take long before the attention turned towards the possible extension of this valuable diamond resource on similar submerged beaches in the adjacent territorial waters of South Africa and Namibia. This has proved to be a very successful move as the marine production in Namibia today constitutes 48% of that country's total diamond production. Although small scale recovery of diamonds from the sea commenced in the 1950's, the first large scale production came from the operations of the Texan entrepreneur, Sam Collins, in the 1960's. The De Beers Group, which took over Sam Collin's operations in 1969 had all the concession areas, as well as the financial and human resources to tackle the new mining frontier in the correct way by years of data gathering (ie diamond reserves and seafloor terrain studies) before commencing with large scale mining operations in the 1980's. Those who are familiar with the beach mining operations along the South African and Namibian west coasts will have appreciation for the daunting task of surgically removing the payable portion of diamond deposits from the non-payable material on the one hand, and the complex uneven fractured and gullied bed-rock floor of the deposits on the other hand. Not to mention the additional complexities of large boulders and hard calcretised diamond gravel layers (conglomerate) which are sometimes associated with the deposits. It was a natural development that the sea diamond mining operations were approached with the known information of the land operations, attempting to duplicate land mining operations in the sea, but taking cognisance of the variations of the terrain in the different areas. Between April 2000 and April 2002, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) Division of Exploration and Mining has led 6 research expeditions totalling 160 days ship time in waters of Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Indonesia and Australia. Five expeditions were undertaken aboard the Australian research vessel Franklin following successful competitive research proposals, and the sixth used the Indonesian vessel Baruna Jaya VIII (see Table 1). In addition, two CSIRO participants joined JOIDES Resolution for the Ocean Drilling Program Leg 193 in the Manus Basin of PNG. The major scientific objective underpinning these expeditions was to locate and study present-day seafloor and sub-seafloor hydrothermal ore-forming activity in order to develop improved methods of exploring for ancient mineral deposits on land that originally formed by similar processes. The research has been supported financially by a number of Australian-based mineral companies, by Australian international aid agencies, and by appropriation funds from CSIRO, and was conducted in collaboration with researchers from Australia, Indonesia, Portugal, New Zealand, United States of America, South Korea, and the host nations. Building upon earlier successes in the 1986-1997 PACLARK-PACMANUS programs in the Woodlark and Manus Basins of PNG, we have sought to examine a wider range of geological settings in which ancient orebodies are inferred to have formed, including both volcanic and sediment-hosted environments. We have now visited volcanic arcs, fore-arc and triple-junction related submarine volcanoes, and back arc basins associated with convergent plate margins in the SW Pacific and SE Asia, as well as conceptual Mississippi-Valley-type targets associated with warm seeps at passive margins in the Great Australian Bight (see Figure 1). Surveys ranged from northern Sulawesi via far western Bismarck volcanic arc near PNG-Indonesia border, through the eastern Manus Basin and the Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni chain in PNG, the western Solomon Islands festoon, the San Cristobal arc, parts of the Vitiaz arc, to the northern and southern New Hebrides arc in the Solomons and Vanuatu.

Wherever hydrothermal fluids vent from the seafloor they will buoyantly rise (up to 100?s of meters) while mixing with seawater before attaining density equilibrium and dispersing laterally as neutrally buoyant plumes commonly 50 to several 100?s of meters in thickness and with order-of-magnitude or greater breadth. Although these plumes are typically >10,000-fold dilutions of vent fluids they can be reliably detected using sophisticated physical sensing and chemical techniques. Hence, hydrothermal plumes are spatially large targets compared to the actual sites of seafloor fluid discharge and resulting mineralization. For this reason plume prospecting techniques evolved over the past 20+ years have been widely used to systematically explore over 10% of the 60,000-km-long system of mid-ocean ridge (MOR) spreading centers for hydrothermal activity. While plume detection and gradient mapping can be used to home in on venting sites, plume chemical signatures provide additional insight regarding the nature of the fluids being discharged on the seafloor. We have applied the systematic plume prospecting techniques developed on MORs to the volcanic frontal arc setting as part of the NZAPLUME (New Zealand American PLUme Mapping Expedition) surveys. NZAPLUME I in March 1999 marked the first systematic reconnaissance of any intra-oceanic arc for submarine hydrothermal activity. Seven of thirteen previously mapped volcanoes that comprise a 260-km-long section of the southern Kermadec arc northeast of New Zealand were confirmed to be hydrothermally active. On average, one hydrothermally active volcano was found along each 35 km of arc front, a rate comparable to slow- and intermediate-rate spreading MORs. During NZAPLUME II in May 2002, thirteen previously unknown volcanoes and 8 satellite cones were first swath mapped for bathymetric detail and then surveyed using plume prospecting techniques. Three active venting sites were discovered along this 580 km-long arc section, bringing the total to 10, or 39% of 26 volcanoes surveyed overall, still an appreciable frequency rate for venting sites compared to MORs. While only chemical results for NZAPLUME I are available, the arc plumes characterized so far are chemically diverse and rich compared to MOR plumes. This diversity and enrichment was most evident as ultra-high concentrations of CO2, sulfur gases (St = SO2 + H2S), and Fe within plumes over several volcanoes. We suggest the fluids discharging from the seafloor at these sites are volcanic fluids, i.e., hybrid fluids comprised of MOR-like hydrothermal fluids evolved from seawater-rock reaction and fluids exsolved from magma as acid volatiles and liquid brines.

The two HYFIFLUX cruises of the German RV SONNE (SO 99/1995 and SO 134/1998) were organized in the framework of a co-operation between several German universities and two European marine research partners. It is a multidisciplinary program for the study of hydrothermalism with its associated geological, mineralogical, and biological processes in the North Fiji Basin (NFB) in the SW-Pacific. The main achievements of the HYFIFLUX cruises were detailed multibeam Hydrosweep mapping in order to identify the detailed tectonic setting, water sampling at hydrothermally active vents, mineral sampling at inactive sites with sulfide, sulfate, and silica mineralizations, and sampling of basaltic rocks, (Halbach et al. 1999). Oceanic accretion in the NFB is characterized by a double spreading system (Auzende et al. 1994),with one spreading axis located in the median part of the basin (Central Fiji Ridge, CFR) and the second one located immediately west of the Fiji platform (West Fiji Ridge). Most of our investigations were done in the northern part of the N 15° segment of the CFR, which corresponds to area A of our program, area D is located farther south in the NFB and corresponds to the N-S segment of the CFR (Fig. 1). During previous works under the French-Japanese STARMER project, the active ?White Lady? mound and the extinct Père Lachaiseí site were sampled; these samples were studied by Bendel et al. 1993. Here an inactive hydrothermal field was studied, where there were many sediment-covered chimneys in various stages of disintegration, (Bendel et al. 1993). Nautilus Minerals (Nautilus) is following the lead of the petroleum industry as it strives to tap vast offshore resources. Planning is well underway for the Solwara 1 Project in the Bismarck Sea, Papua New Guinea (PNG) to recover high-grade seafloor massive sulphide deposits in 1600 m water depth. The deposit contains an average copper grade >10 times higher than a typical land-based porphyry copper mine. The high grades combined with a relatively small amount of overburden ensure the Solwara 1 Project will have a significantly smaller physical footprint than its land-based counterparts. Offshore minerals production also has the advantage of minimal social disturbance. Nautilus is dedicated to setting a high environmental and social responsibility standard. Nautilus recognises the importance of transparent and inclusive stakeholder engagement and has taken a proactive approach to involve as many key stakeholders as possible. One of the first steps in the permitting process in PNG is the preparation of the Environmental Inception Report, which describes the project, its envisaged impacts and the proposed studies for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Local (PNG-based) and international environmental scientists, anthropologists, NGOs and other experts were involved in the definition of studies conducted for the Solwara 1 EIA and a team of world-leading experts was involved with carrying out the studies, culminating in the preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). To ensure transparency, collaborating researchers are free to publish their findings. Following its submission, the EIS was made available for public review and public hearings were held at several locations. The EIS has also undergone a rigorous independent review by PNG government-engaged consultants. Outside the permitting process, Nautilus works alongside government officials to carry out ongoing community consultations. Information dissemination and feedback acquisition has also occurred through the Nautilus website and attendance at a number of international conferences, workshops, and meetings. This paper will outline the leading edge approach Nautilus has taken in completing the environmental impact statement for the world?s first deep seafloor copper-gold mine. In addition, this paper will review the permitting process and the government and stakeholder engagement undertaken as part of Nautilus? desire to ?do it right? in this exciting new industry.

This abstract discusses selected recent technology developments at the Deep Submergence Lab at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution aimed at fundamentally changing the nature and scope of AUV operations in the deep ocean. The Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) Sentry is described in its current configuration with discussion of emerging capabilities. Telepresence enhanced AUV operations are discussed including moving both operations and data processing personnel off the vessel. Autonomous Surface Vessel (ASV) aided AUV operations are discussed including recent experiments where an ASV provided both navigational aiding and a satellite based relay for acoustic communication of telemetery and mission redirection. New flexible communications strategies to perform intervention and manipulation tasks from an untethered vehicle are discussed. The abstract concludes with a brief discussion of industrial collaborations, including the newly launched Center for Marine Robotics.

This article is a summary, with documentation and references, of recent global developments in identifying environmental issues affecting the marine mining industry. It is recognised that marine mining for various products occurs at various depths from shallow water (e.g. aggregate and diamond mining) potentially to great depths (e.g. metalliferous muds, and manganese crusts and nodules). Nevertheless there are environmental issues in common, even though the options for resolutions will vary greatly. The point of this review is to identify the issues, so that where site-specific resolutions are considered, it is possible to draw on experience with the issues elsewhere. Related mining issues, e.g. tailings effluent quality, orebody geochemistry, are mentioned where relevant but are not detailed in this article, although obviously they are a part of there solutions to the environmental issues. The environmental issues and their resolutions are important - on the basis of the ethic of not creating more impact than is inevitable, and the long-term financial and social costs at a mine-site of not getting the resolutions right.

At present, marine ferromanganese crusts of seamounts are of great interest as a source of high-tech metals. The metals most enriched in these deposits are essential for a wide variety of green-tech, emerging-tech, and energy applications (Hein et al., 2013). There is a grate number data on the content of major and minor metals (thousands analyses). However, information on the content of such elements as platinum, gold and silver in the world literature is limited. The concentrations (N – number of analyses) of platinum, gold and silver in the Pacific are 418 ppb (N = 105), 35 ppb (N = 72), 1.02 ppm (N = 26), respectively, and in the North Pacific Prime Zone - 477 ppb (N = 66), 55 ppb (N = 13), 0.1 ppm (N = 4); in the Atlantic Ocean is 567 ppb (N = 2), 6 ppb (N = 2), 0.20 ppm (N = 18), in the Indian Ocean, 211 ppb (N = 6), 21 ppb (N = 2), 0.37 ppm (N = 9) respectively; (Hein et al., 2013). The northern part of the Pacific is poorly studied in this question. The samples of ferromanganese deposits (FMD) was recovered from the Govorov Guyot (Magellan seamounts), MZh-33 Guyot (Marshall Islands), as well as the Detroit Guyot (Imperor Ridge) and Yomei Guyot (Fe-Mn placer Holes 431 and 431A DSDP, Imperor Ridge).

Bottom sediment sampling by means of a box corer, as a direct method of deep seabed exploration for polymetallic nodules, is the most comprehensive way to obtain various types of geological information on points forming a network of stations. However, direct information is lacking from areas separating those stations and has to be approximated by interpolation or extrapolation, which leads to uncertainties. Sediment sampling with a gravity or piston corer can provide information on the superficial, up to 4 m thick, part of the sedimentary cover. As opposed to box coring, gravity or piston coring provides no information on nodule abundance. Information for unsampled areas can be gained by application of remote techniques of exploration. The techniques of choice in visualising nodule-rich fields, nodule-free areas, hard rock outcrops and other obstacles for seafloor mining involve using sonar and continuous deep sea (CDS) camera. Seafloor mapping can be rendered with two major sonar types: the side scan sonar used to obtain seafloor imagery and multibeam sonar for bathymetric data; the two types are usually combined and work with an intermediate frequency profiler. Photo-profiling by means of a deep sea towed camera provides a series of seafloor photographs, each supplemented with information on the area covered by each frame, including the nodule abundance. Remote techniques have been quite frequently applied by the Interoceanmetal Joint Organization (IOM) in nodule field exploration. Recently, geoacoustic techniques (side scan sonar + profiler) and CDS were applied for exploration of IOM?s first prime area H11 (5372 km2) on 6 transects. During the IOM-2009 cruise, a total of 295 km of geoacoustic transects and 344 km of photo-transects were surveyed. The data obtained were processed with the aid of earlier information produced by multibeam sonar surveys. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the advantages of remote techniques, particularly with regard to application of the towfish device, for geological and geotechnical applications in exploration for polymetallic nodules.

INTRODUCTION Ferromanganese (FeMn) crusts from Mendeleev Ridge, Chukchi Borderland, and Alpha Ridge, in the Amerasia Basin, Arctic Ocean, are similar based on morphology and chemical composition. The crusts are characterized by two- to four-layered stratigraphy. The chemical composition of the Arctic crusts differs significantly from hydrogenetic crusts from the North Pacific Prime Zone (PCZ; Hein et al., 2013), such as a high mean Fe/Mn ratio (2.6 versus 1.3) and low Si/Al ratio (1.8 versus 4.0), with lower Mn, Ca, Ti, P, Ba, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sr, and Zn and higher Si, Al, Mg, As, Li, V, Sc, and Th. Based on Arctic FeMn crust mineralogy, chemical composition, and growth rates, crust formation was dominated by three processes: Precipitation of Fe-Mn (oxyhydr)oxides from ambient ocean water, sorption of metals by the Fe and Mn phases, and fluctuating but large inputs of terrigenous debris (Konstantinova et al., 2017; Hein et al., 2017). The Mn and Fe phases are hydrogenous and reflect bottom ocean-water chemistry and the aluminosilicate phase contains stable detrital minerals such as quartz, feldspars, zircon, monazite, and clay minerals. A precise method of studying the distribution of elements in FeMn crust phases is sequential leaching that dissolves four mineral phases of different stability step-by-step, in the following order: easily leachable phase, mostly bio-calcite; manganese oxides; iron oxyhydroxides; and residual aluminosilicate minerals (Koschinsky and Halbach, 1995). Twelve bulk crusts and crust layer samples obtained from six hydrogenous FeMn crusts were studied. Those crusts were collected during Russian (Arktika 2012) and USA (HLY0805, HLY0905, and HLY1202) research cruises from different parts of the Amerasia Basin (Mendeleev and Alpha Ridges, Chukchi Borderland). Samples were chosen for the sequential leaching experiments based on their morphology, location, and water depth. Hydrogenetic crust (D07-33) from the Tuvalu EEZ, central-west Pacific Ocean, was included in the experiment for comparison. Recovery during the four-step sequential leaching, with respect to the bulk analyses, was between 80% and 120%.

The Chavara and Manavalakurichi placer deposits have been known since a long time for their rich reserves of heavy minerals like ilmenite, rutile, monazite etc. While detailed work has been conducted on the mineralogy and texture of the bulk placer sediments, reports on the detailed investigations on individual minerals are relatively scanty. Though, limited work pertaining to the chemistry of ilmenite has been carried out by Nair et al (1995) and Ramakrishnan et al (1997), a comprehensive study of the weathering patterns of ilmenite along the longitudinal and vertical profiles has not been, so far, undertaken. Data on the microscopic analysis of ilmenite from the southwest placers, too, is sketchy. The present work deals with the variation of the weathering undergone by ilmenite in the southwest placer deposits based on chemical and mineralogical analyses.

"The slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), with a length of ~1.26*104km (Bird, 2003), is the longest mid-ocean ridge on this plant. Separated by the large, left-stepping Equatorial fracture zones, it then be divided into two approximately equal-length parts: Northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (NMAR, ~6292km) with an average spreading rate of 24mm/yr, and Southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (SMAR, ~6332km) of 33mm/yr (calculated from PB2002 model, Bird, 2003). Previous works (e.g. Fouquet 1997, Hannington et al., 2011) suggest that slow-spreading ridge could support hydrothermal activities and further favorable for the development of extensive seafloor massive sulfide deposits (SMS). Unlike the NMAR for which large part has been explored for SMS (Hannington et al., 2011; Beaulieu et al., 2015), the SMAR is amongst the least hydrothermal explored spreading ridges until now (Haase et al., 2005, Beaulieu et al., 2015), though both of them show significant similarities in terms of spreading rate, ridge morphology, segmentation, etc. (Macdonald et al., 2001, Sandwell et al., 2014, Tucholke et al., 2008).Before this work, several hydrothermal cruises had been to SMAR since British and German programs starting in 2002, some hydrothermal fields, along with systematic geophysical data, were newly investigated, and types of geologic setting that can host hydrothermal activity were firstly identified (e.g. German et al., 2008; Haase et al.,2005; Haase et al.,2009; Devey et al.,2010; Schmidt et al.,2011).."

On June 26, 1988, the Jade Hydrothermal Field was discovered in the Okinawa Trough by the German RV Sonne. This research cruise has taken place within the scope of a German-Japanese cooperative project. The Okinawa Trough, located between the Ryukyu Island Chain and the east coast of China, is an active backarc-basin formed by extension within the continental lithosphere. The Ryukyu arc consists of a nonvolcanic outer arc, forming the main island chain and representing compressive highs of the Asian continental margin, and an inner arc with present-day volcanism in its northern part (Sibuet et al. 1988). The valleys and ridges of the trough are cut across by transverse faults, giving rise to younger volcanic intrusions. The Jade Hydrothermal Field was detected in a caldera-like structure. It is. located at about 27°15,0'N and 127°04,5'E with a maxi- mum water depth of about 1650 m. Data of heat flow measurements show a high anomaly in the cauldron basin with values ranging from around 100 to 800 mw/m2 (Halbach et al. 1989). The hydrothermal vent area was discovered in the northern part of the inside northeast slope of the cauldron in a water depth between about 1300 and 1500 m. "The methods and technologies to be used for environmental monitoring of seabed mining activities are a key issue. Due to the large water depths, there are special challenges with respect to the monitoring equipment that is suitable. DNV GL has built up substantial experience of environmental monitoring from oil & gas projects in deep waters in the Norwegian Sea.Monitoring equipment and experiences from the oil & gas sector can to a large extent be applied to seabed mining.BackgroundThe International Seabed Authority is currently developing an environmental management strategy for the Area (ISA, 2017) as a part of the work on the regulations for exploitation for mineral resources in the Area.The draft environment strategy contains provisions related to monitoring and reporting of the activities. Introduction Marine Autonomous Systems are making rapid progress from their early years as research tools for university departments & government institutes into having a growing number of real-world applications for industry, academia, statutory inspection, data acquisition and defence. Deep sea mining offers a distinct set of challenges that are very well suited to autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and to a lesser extent for autonomous surface vehicles. Deeper, smarter, more capable Global demand for rare earth metals and high-grade ore will inevitably lead to exploitation of deep ocean resources as terrestrial reserves become depleted or remain unavailable for political or environmental reasons. Winning production licenses from the international seabed authority and especially gaining public trust to undertake deep sea mining activities and licenses will depend upon high quality pre-exploitation scientific surveys of the sea floor ecosystem, and subsequent monitoring of the impact of mining activity and remediation work. The actual area covered by the seabed mining operation may be quite small in terms of square kilometres, but still larger than can be patrolled by tethered ‘eyeball’ class Remote Operated Vehicles, so multi-spectral inspection, assessment and monitoring will be more effective when carried out by untethered AUVs. By using seabed recharging stations and data upload points the AUV can stay in situ in the deep ocean, rather than be repeatedly brought back to the surface.

In 1994 and 1998 the German research vessel R/V Sonne undertook detailed mapping and sampling of the largely uncharted offshore areas of the Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni island chain in the New Ireland Basin of Papua New Guinea. The New Ireland Basin occupies a fore-arc position with respect to the formerly active Manus-Kilinailau arc-trench system and hosts a series of Pliocene to Recent alkaline volcanoes which are built on rifted Miocene sedimentary basement. Several of the volcanoes possess high-level porphyry stocks and active geothermal systems, including gold-depositing hot springs and the giant (40 million ounces) Ladolam gold deposit on the island of Lihir. On the southern flank of Lihir island, a group of three volcanic cones were discovered at water depths from 1.000-1.500 m. The volcanoes are located in a narrow zone of recent seismic activity and elevated heat flow (up to 100 mW/m2). The recovered volcanic rocks consist of fresh alkali-olivine basalts, clinopyroxene-rich basalts (ankaramites), porphyritic phlogopite basalts, and trachybasalts. Unusual gold-rich hydrothermal precipitates were recovered from the summit of the 600 m high Conical Seamount located only about 10 km south of Lihir Island. 1200 kg of sampled material systematically collected with a TV-guided grab from the top plateau (150 x 200 m, 1.050 m water depth) are intensely mineralized with pyrite, marcasite, minor sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, tennantite/tetrahedrite, and orpiment/realgar together with traces of anglesite, cerrusite, and amorphous silica in stockwork-like veins. Bulk samples of the vein mineralization consist mainly of clays, silica, and disseminated sulfides, and have an unusual high gold content ranging from 1.2-44.0 ppm Au. In some of these samples, grains of native gold (about 1 micron in diameter) were identified by SEM in pyrite and sphalerite. The gold-rich material also contains high concentrations of silver (up to 1000 ppm) and typical epithermal elements such as As (2.6 wt.%), Sb (0.2 wt.%), and Hg (34 ppm). Similar to epithermal deposits on land, which usually have only low base metal contents, the samples from Conical Seamount contain only minor amounts of Zn (max. 4.5 wt.%), Cu (2.0 wt.%), and Pb (2.0 wt.%). Many of the samples recovered from Conical Seamount are virtually identical to the gold ore at Lihir.

The Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) was founded in 1969 when a group of scientific and technical societies organized an annual conference and exhibition dedicated to technologies used in the offshore oil, gas and mining industries. Currently, OTC is sponsored by 12 industry organizations and societies. These include: American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG); American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE); American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME); American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE); ASME International Petroleum Technology Institute; Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers/Oceanic Society (IEEE-OES); Marine Technology Society (MTS); Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG); Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME); Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME); Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE); and The Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society (TMS). OTC also has two endorsing organizations, the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) and the Petroleum Equipment Suppliers Association (PESA), as well as 6 supporting organizations that include the American Petroleum Institute (API), the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA), the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science, and Technology (IMEST), the International Association of Geophysical Contractors (IAGC), the National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA), and the United Kingdom Offshore Operators Association (UKOOA). From its earliest years, the OTC has been held during the first week of May in Houston, TX, initially at the Albert Thomas Convention Center where OTC?69 drew 4200 attendees and 200 exhibitors. As the conference grew and became established as the world?s foremost event for the development of offshore resources in the fields of drilling, exploration, production, and environmental protection, the venue was changed to the Astrodomain Complex, with technical paper sessions and most exhibits taking place in the Astro Hall. The numbers of attendees and exhibitors varied somewhat over the years, primarily in accordance with the fortunes of the international oil and gas industry. At its height in the early 1980s, OTC registered attendance exceeded 100,000 with more than 2500 exhibitors forcing expansion into the Astro Arena and even the Astrodome.

"The active TAG hydrothermal mound is one of the largest and better studied. Due to its size (one of the largest, known so far, in the Atlantic Ocean) and concentration of specific economic valuable elements, it might be considered for future exploitation due the increasing demand for raw materials. However, the discovery of several large inactive sulfide mounds, some partially buried under sediments may relieve this pressure. Exploration for such occurrences can, together with geophysical exploration tools, be accomplished by mineralogical and geochemical studies of those sediments.INTRODUCTION AND GEOLOGICAL SETTINGThis study reports the results from sediment samples collected during the Meteor M127 cruise on the TAG hydrothermal area in 2016. The Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse (TAG) hydrothermal field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 26°08’N) is located 2.4 km east of the main rift valley at depths of about 3650 m. The TAG hydrothermal field stands as an example of a massive sulfide deposit on a low-spreading ridge associated with an active detachment fault (Humphris et al., 2015).Associated with the TAG hydrothermal field are metalliferous sediments/deposits that can reach several meters in thickness (Metz et al., 1988). These sediments/deposits can be formed by hydrothermal plume fall out (buoyant and nonbuoyant), massive wasting of hydrothermal edifices (sulfide mounds and chimneys) and authigenic mineralization (Gurvich, 2006). By studying the grain size, mineralogy and geochemistry of the sediments it is possible to identify each type of sediments and find their proximal or distal distribution. The location of the gravity cores studied here is distributed along sediment ponds near inactive hydrothermal mounds [Three mounds area (B)], actively venting low-temperature mound [Shimmering mound (A) and Mir zone (D)] and an area of sediment accumulation [Central area (C)] (Rona et al., 1993) (see Figure 1)."

"Lifting riser in deep-seabed mining (DSM) is exposed to acute and chronic stresses of materials, whose yield will result in the most critical loss of total mining system. For freehanging riser (FHR), the axial vibration and local bending of riser may produce acute stresses, in the meanwhile, vortex-induced vibration (VIV) in relative current, friction and collisions of solid particles with inner-wall, and material corrosion in seawater are representative causes of chronic stresses. The chronical stresses bring about fatigue failure or abrupt failure by material loss. Hydraulic lifting is effective and promising for transportation of minerals, however, ecofriendly treatment of operating seawater is an unease hurdle to come over. Sizing of riser section confronts multi-directional problems, i.e. safety of slurry transportation (flow assurance), material safety of riser (wall thickness), seawater treatment on board, etc.A free-standing riser (FSR) might exclude a part of design problems of free-hanging riser and give a way to sustainable mining. FSR stands vertically by means of sub-buoyancy part(s). The top of FSR emerges above sea surface and is connected with mining platform through jumper line (supported by external yoke). Total amount of sub-buoyancy and location(s) have to be carefully determined in viewpoints of dynamics of FSI (fluidstructure interaction) in waves and currents. The concept of FSR gives more freedom for design of multi-functional riser system in view of sustainability of DSM. In DSM, sustainability concept may be focused on eco-friendly treatment of seawater and sediment, and safety of total mining system. For feasibility of FSR, however, installation, maintenance and repair need to be investigated thoroughly in collaboration with industry experts"
