Recognizing that the planned commercial exploitation of polymetallic nodules in the deep sea should be accompanied by environmental studies in order to protect this largest and least understood ecosystem of our planet, the German Ministry for Research and Technology has since 1989 funded a longterm and large-scale disturbance-recolonization (DISCOL) experiment in the abyssal Peru Basin of the equatorial South Pacific Ocean. The circular study site is located at 4150m depths and encompasses about 10km2 of relatively flat, heavily sedimented sea floor with low (< 15%) nodule coverage near an existing German nodule mining exploration license area. The RV SONNE, a large and well-equipped multi-purpose research vessel, served as platform for all environmental cruises conducted to date. The initial DISCOL expedition (SO-61, Feb.-March 1989) was carried out in two legs. During DISCOL 1/1, a study site was selected, a pre-disturbance baseline assessment was undertaken, and sea floor disruption was begun using the "plow-harrow", a uniquely designed disturber device towed repeatedly across the circular study area. During DISCOL 1/2, disturber deployments continued until the device had created 78 criss-crossing and partially overlapping tracks along which nodules were essentially plowed under while sediment from up to 15cm below the seabed had been turned over and exposed at the surface. In addition to the obvious within disturber track impacts, sediment mobilized by plowing drifted off with the prevailing near-bottom current and redeposited downstream, blanketing nearby areas not directly disturbed. Immediately after the disturbance phase, an initial post-impact sampling series was performed. The DISCOL Experimental Area (DEA) was revisited about six months (DISCOL 2, SO-64, Sept. 1989), three years (DISCOL 3, SO-77, Feb. 1992), and seven years (ATESEPP SO-106, Jan.-March 1996) after disturbance to collect further post-impact samples, monitor changes in the benthic community and follow the recolonization process. In addition to benthic community studies, plankton investigations were initiated during the third DISCOL cruise (SO-77) and continued during three further cruises (SO-78, SO-79 and SO-80/2) in 1992.

A unique concept for a self-cleaning filter system has been designed and constructed which utilizes acoustic energy, coupled hydraulically with a subject liquid media, and a fine mesh screen to perform the following: 1. separation of solid suspended particles from a host liquid through the breakdown of surface tension; 2. enhanced filtration of liquid fraction from the solids fraction to specified limits, retaining a specified size range of solids, and; 3. continuous cleaning of screen, preventing screen blinding and promoting a continuous filtration process. The concept is the product of a cooperative program between the Marine Minerals Technology Center, Continental Shelf Division, and the Moscow State Mining University. The physical principals involved in the separation, filtration, and screen cleaning processes primarily relate to the characteristics and properties of the applied acoustic energy and the influence of this energy on the solids/liquid mixture. The acoustic energy introduced to, and acting on and throughout, the whole volume of the solids/liquid mixture, within the vessel body at any given time induces hydraulic pressure waves, which may be further described in simplest form as positive and negative semiperiods (which may or may not be equal in amplitude or period) of the basic wave forms. The processes involved may be considered in two phases. The first phase relates to the process of separation in which the acoustically induced force of acceleration manifests as vibro-agitation (thresh- old of cavitation) and possibly cavitation is the primary factor in the breakdown of surface tension between the solid particles and suspending liquid; i.e. water. In the case of compressible organic solids, the separation of liquid by squeezing may also be a factor.

In its first three years of operations, the in-house programs of the continental Shelf Division of the Marine Minerals Technology Center (MMTC/CSD) have focused on the development of drill systems - technology and the improvement of techniques and applications of reconnaissance methods to marine mineral deposit characterization. Many of the technological advances made to date have been in direct response to specific requests from industry for drill systems needs, and from federal and state agencies seeking technical support for various research efforts. These cooperative programs have proven to be an extremely efficient and effective way for the MMTC to achieve some of the main program goals that were established for the organization at the outset: primarily, to encourage and assist U.S. industry in marine minerals research activities and to encourage cooperative work among research institutions, government agencies, and industry. The interactions between hydrothermal fluids and seawater result in minerals that range in size from nano- to macro-scale and constrain mineral emplacement, whether in hydrothermal chimneys or metalliferous sediments. Although broad similarities exist, and sulfides are the most important component of seafloor massive sulfide deposits, the specific mineralogy, size and therefore reactivity of particles emitted varies between hydrothermal sites in the global ocean, and even at different sites within the same vent field. The oxidation of sulfide minerals results in one of the major impacts of terrestrial mining of volcanogenic massive sulfides as it creates acid mine drainage. At marine hydrothermal vents, the chimneys themselves, as well as the ‘black smoke’ begin to oxidize as soon as they are in contact with ocean water; the breaking of sulfide minerals during marine mining will expose further surface area to seawater and oxidation. Although the cold temperatures and circum- neutral pH result in oxidation proceeding less rapidly than in many terrestrial systems, there is limited data on the kinetics of sulfide oxidation in seawater. Here, the oxidation of sulfide minerals in seawater and the implications for marine mining will be discussed, with an emphasis on nano-ZnS and sphalerite, including reaction kinetics, processes, and oxidation products.

Efficient and successful mineral processing is dependent on detailed knowledge of the materials and minerals that are to be separated and concentrated. Common bulk methodologies such as XRD and XRF are fast and easy, and can provide an overview of the mineralogy and bulk chemistry of the material. However, they will not provide any textural information. Knowledge of the often intricate interaction between minerals in seafloor massive sulfide deposits is crucial in plant design for mineral processing. Samples from the Loki’s Castle hydrothermal vent have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), QEMSCAN, Electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA), and Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD). Processing experiments used froth flotation and leaching techniques. The typical line of operation in ore characterization is shown in Figure 1. Mineral processing may be commenced after any stage of ore characterization. However, it is ideal to have completed as many steps in the ore characterization as possible in order to have the most information of the initial feed material. The main economic minerals in the samples are isocubanite (CuFe2S3), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), and sphalerite (ZnS), with minor galena (PbS) and trace amounts of Au and Ag. The minerals show complex intergrowth textures down to the nanometer scale. These samples exemplify the need for advanced microtextural analyses to adequately characterize ore material prior to processing. The complex textures hamper the use of flotation as an efficient technique, due to the inability to sufficiently liberate the different minerals and problems with selectively floating isocubanite. Thus, leaching was the preferred method for extracting metals.

The geodiversity of seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) deposits at the slow- and ultra-slow spreading ridges is of great variety (Fouquet et al., 2010). Tectonics and magmatism are the two principal factors which control SMS formation and localization. The geological setting of SMS deposits is determined by their position relative to the rift valley and by the types of rocks hosted (Table 1). Depending on the first parameter, SMS deposits could be localized at [ ] the axial volcanic ridge or at the flank of the rift valley. Basalts, deep-seated gabbro, and serpentinized peridotites are distinguished among the hosted rocks. The outcrops of deep-seated rocks are exposed at the flanks of the rift valley. The tectonic mechanism of the lower crust and mantle rocks exhumation process is connected with very large offsets along the detachment faults, resulting in a forming oceanic core complex (OCC) (Smith et al., 2006; MacLeod et al., 2009). The SMS related to OCCs are represented by such ore clusters as Ashadze, Logatchev, Semyenov, and some others (Table 1) and are increasing steadily in number. This fact in combination with widespread OCC formation at the slow-spreading ridges (Escartin et al., 2008) and high grades of metals in SMS related to OCCs has provoked considerable scientific and economic interest in these types of deposits. It could be mentioned in this regard that the first two applications to the International Seabed Authority for prospecting and exploration of sulfides have been submitted for the areas in the spreading centres with wide distribution of the core complexes.

The age of mineralization, its mode of formation, the time elapsed to amass an economic deposit, its capacity for sustainable extraction and, ultimately, its grade and tonnage, are key aspects in the economic viability of volcanic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits (Ditchburn et al, 2004). Radiometric dating methods applied at GNS Science have been recently refined with the purpose of efficiently determining the ages of seafloor VMS mineralization along active intraoceanic arcs. These developments include: determining the longevity of seafloor hydrothermal systems, details of individual chimney and massive sulfide mound growth, and insights into deep-seated processes, such as the transfer of elements from magmas to their overlying hydrothermal systems. In our pursuit to better understand seafloor hydrothermal systems along intraoceanic arcs, we have thus far compiled age information for three volcanic centres of the Kermadec arc (South Pacific) and one of the Mariana arc (NW Pacific).

Two major Kuroko-type deposits and minor sulfide deposits have been found in the middle Izu-Ogasawara (Bonin) Arc, Japan (Fig. 1). The Hakurei deposit, one of the major Kuroko-type deposits, was recently found in Bayonnaise knoll caldera in the nascent rift zone, which lies 20 km westward of the Sunrise deposit in Myojin knoll caldera on the Izu-Ogasawara volcanic front. The Hakurei deposit is a huge hydrothermal field measuring 500 m by 700 m in plan view. The Bayonnaise knoll caldera is mainly composed of dacite lavas and fragmental material on the caldera wall and rim, and its floor contains sediment composed of pumice, volcanic fragments, and hydrothermal clay. It is associated with a post-caldera dome and has a slightly ellipsoidal caldera rim that measures 3 km by 2.5 km, with about 200 m relief. The water depths of the caldera floor range from about 840 m to 920 m. The Kuroko-type deposit in the Bayonnaise knoll caldera occurs on the southeastern caldera floor where the caldera boundary faults intersect with a N-S-trending normal fault of the rift zone. In the deposit, many sulfide chimneys are generally less than 10 m high, and sulfide mounds are distributed around the caldera floor and on the sloping talus at the foot of the caldera wall. The deposit is buried in part by talus composed of pumice and volcanic fragments. Sulfide chimneys are still active, and inactive ones and their fragments are partly oxidized to reddish material. Chimney sulfides are mainly composed of sphalerite associated with chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, and barite, and chemically enriched in Au up to 14 ppm and Ag up to 1400 ppm with major Zn, moderate Ba, and minor Pb, Hg, Cu, and Fe.

With the pending U.S. ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the subject was raised as to the Convention&apos;s potential impact on U.S. ocean science. The Ocean Studies Board (National Academy of Sciences) elected to convene a two-day workshop in October 1995 to consider the potential impacts and to determine whether or not they warranted a more formal and intensive study. A review of the workshop discussions and deliberations concerning the matter of UNCLOS and U.S. ocean science will be presented.

The aim of the paper is to analyze the viability of commercial exploitation of polymetallic nodules, the time aspect for exploitation and the probable organization of commercial projects. METHOD My methodological point of departure is to view the various factors in context, and to differentiate between the various groups of actors. This involves taking as my starting point the interaction that exists between economics, technology, politics, law, the environment, and even psychology and ideology, and acknowledge that the various actors may well have differing motives for their engagement.

A recently completed series of projects funded by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the U.S. Minerals Management Service was designed to assess the distribution of heavy minerals on the inner continental shelf adjacent to Virginia. These projects indicate that a suite of minerals of both strategic and economic interest is present. Analysis of several hundred grab and core samples shows that zircon, monazite, and titanium minerals (ilmenite, rutile, and leucoxene) occur in quantities that probably warrant further study by the mineral industry. Furthermore, side-scan sonography and shallow seismic profiles have provided information on the thickness and areal extent of the mineral-bearing sands. Possible development of the resource is enhanced by a potential use of offshore sand for beach nourishment. The results of the preliminary studies have been presented in open-file publications and oral reports in order that the mineral industry might have an up to date basis upon which to consider more exploratory work. Much of the effort south of the mouth of Chesapeake Bay was made in cooperation with and enhanced by an independent study of sand resources for beach nourishment and other needs. Preliminary review of the quantitative analyses of the heavy-mineral content of several hundred samples demonstrates that the distribution of high concentrations is non-uniform. An analysis of noble metals (NM) in natural samples is most problematic. Determination of their traces in geochemical samples, in part, for the purpose of deposit evaluation, is a difficult analytical task. A number of international standard reference materials of rocks and ores, in which NM content is certified, is estimated at a half dozen. For example, in the International proficiency test for analytical geochemistry laboratories (GeoPT), which is held by the Department of Earth Sciences (The Open University, United Kingdom), the data for gold and platinum are observed very rarely, and the results obtained in different laboratories differ on 1-3 orders of magnitude. It is caused by low contents of NM in nature, by a variety of their complex and mineral species, as well as by a complicated matrix composition of platinum-containing objects. Among these objects are ferromanganese ores, enriched strongly with Fe, Mn, Ni, REEs - the elements hampering a precise determination of NM due to a complexity of instrumental inter-element correction. The absence of the reliable methods of NM determination in these ores drastically limits the possibility of deposit evaluation.

Despite the very large offshore Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) area of Greenland (in excess of 2 mill. km2) virtually no work has been carried out on marine minerals on the ocean floor. Apart from a single reconnaissance survey by a mining company, major activities have been those of oil companies exploring the West Greenland shelf in the early seventies. The West Greenland shelf and its extensions is the most obvious area for year-around accessability when looking for marine mineral deposits. So far, only one onshore placer deposit has been found - ilmenite deposit near Thule, NW Greenland, whereas a gold placer in South Greenland presently is being evaluated.

Ferromanganese crusts on the seamounts in the Pacific Ocean are potential resources of cobalt, nickel, platinum and REEs. Particularly, those of the Republic of Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) waters are believed to be of the highest resources potential area in the Pacific Ocean. The total six cruises using the Japanese Research Vessel Hakurei Maru No. 2 were carried out in the seamounts of the Marshall Islands in 1996, 1998 and 2002, and of the FSM in the 1997, 1998 and 2005 for evaluation of economic potential for cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts as part of the Japan-SOPAC joint project. During these cruises numerous data such as bathymetric, geological, geophysical and environmental data were obtained. Geophysical exploration with backscatter mapping and side scan sonar, visual imaging using towed TV camera and geological sampling using dredge bucket and/or benthic multi-coring system (BMS) were conducted on these seamounts. In this presentation, we will report the mode of distribution of the crusts and calculated resource estimation based on the results of these geological and geophysical shipboard survey and land-based analyses. The chemical composition of the nodules varies with the type of manganese minerals and the size and characteristics of their nucleus, but those who have an economic interest have the following composition: Mn 29%, Fe 6% Si 5%, Al 3%, Ni 1.4%, Cu 1.3%, Co 0.25%, Na 1.5%, Ca 1.5%, Mg 0.5%, K 0.5%, Ti 0.2 0.2% and Ba 0.2% (Morgan, 2000; ISA, 2002). The Pacific Rim is an area of abundant occurrence of polymetallic nodules (Glasby et al., 1980; Morgan, 2000). According to these authors, the Pacific sea floor of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) is one of the most interesting areas in regard to the genesis of polymetallic nodules. Their abundance in the ocean floor is very variable, as there are places where they cover more than 70% of the ocean floor. The nodules can be found at any depth, but the highest concentrations are between 4000 and 6000m (Morgan et al., 1993). In studies conducted in the EEZ of the Mexican Pacific are those made within the project "Research on the origin, process and distribution of minerals in the Pacific ocean floor in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Mexico". Within this project Rosales (1989) conducted studies on the origin, process and distribution of polymetallic nodules, finding that a number of processes give origin to nodules, being diagenesis one of the main mechanisms of elements that contribute to the nodules. Besides hydrothermal processes that are carried near the East Pacific Rise at 21° N, inputs are contributing to the nodules metallic elements and sediments, especially in regions close to the dorsal, as a greater influence hydrogenetic processes occurs westward (Rosales and Carranza, 1990). In 1993, after cruise MIMAR II, Carranza and Rosales refer that metals such as Cu, Co, Ni, Sn, Fe, Mg, Pb, Zn and Ba may have a relationship with the East Pacific hydrothermal activity and sea currents carry these metals in solution to the Clarion-Clipperton fracture area, where there are hydrogenic metals sources (Al, Fe and Mn). As result of chemical analysis of Mn, Cu, Ni and Co, polymetallic nodules observed in part of the EEZ of Mexico are possible of potential economic interest (Rosales and Carranza, 1990, 2001; Carranza and Rosales, 2003).

We report preliminary results for a group of unique samples collected with MBARI’s ROV Tiburon on August 12, 2005. The samples were collected from the East Blanco Depression (EBD) diffuse-flow hydrothermal field, which was determined in a previous study to cover an area of at least 100 m by 80 m (Hein et al., 1999). The survey reported on here extends that field to more than 1500 m in an approximately N-S direction. The EBD, a pull-apart basin, occurs near the western end of the Blanco Fracture Zone (BFZ), which connects the Juan de Fuca and Gorda Ridge spreading centers (Fig. 1). The samples were collected from a waterdepth range of 3343-3380 m.

While direct study of high temperature hydrothermal activity and the associated mineral formation as well as study of their scales are possible in the modern ocean, researchers are deprived of such opportunity for past geologic time. Even in cases where hydrothermal deposits that formed in the geological past are preserved they have been covered by sediments or overlain by lava and have become inaccessible after a time for obser-vation and sampling. Rarely are these buried hydrothermal deposits found during deep-sea drilling or coring operations, and their direct study on an ocean scale is impossible at present. Even within hydrothermal fields, without special preliminary detailed surveys, the probability of intersecting hydrothermal edifices that are covered by sediments becomes a rare event.

Two marine diamond deposits on concession 2b off Namaqualand along the South African Coast, have been systematically mined over the past year by the mv Moonstar. The two deposits, Smith?s Ulcer and Wedge Point Basin, are comparable in morphology, straddled the same water depths and have similar geology yet have given very different recoveries when compared to their respective grade models. These differences are best ascribed to the different style of mineralisation observed within the two deposits which has been directly controlled by the bedrock morphology. The smith?s Ulcer deposit has been formed in a metagreywacke bedrock displaying a strong north-south trending foliation which dips steeply to the west. Consequently the mineralisation is confined to narrow north-south linear trends with limited lateral extent (less than 5m) making extraction extremely difficult and somewhat variable. RE factors (recovered grade versus estimated grade) for this deposit range from 0.5 to 1.1. The Wedge Point Basin deposit is formed in a micaceous metaquartzite with a conjugate southwest northwest joint set, the southwest lineation being the more prominent, and structural foliation dipping gently to the west. The resultant style of mineralisation is confined to basinal features defined by topographical lows and is fairly lateral in extent (in order of 50m). Extraction of the mineralisation from this deposit is less arduous with recoveries more uniform, RE factors are frequently in the range 2 - 3. This style of mineralisation is more in line with what is to be expected from marine alluvial deposits, the nugget effect of diamond concentration being responsible for the high RE factor. The long narrow linear trends observed in Smith?s Ulcer demonstrably require a specialised approach in successfully sampling, modeling and ultimately mining.

The discovery of rich alluvial diamond deposits on Namibia?s Skeleton Coast in 1908 began a period of intense exploration and mining off the coastal sand; and shallow surf zones. In the mid-60s a Texas entrepreneur, Sam Rollins took the search to the seafloor. The inhospitable conditions encountered made the early going difficult. After a slow start, the past 10 years have seen much progress in geologist?s understanding of the deposition mechanics and the use of sophisticated geo-physical and sampling techniques to aid in the discovery of economic deposits. Diamondfields, in a joint venture with BHP and Benguela Concessions, began an exploration program in 1994 for sea-bed diamonds off the Port of Luderitz in Namibia. This program has progressed to a mine development program with the potential of creating a 500,000 carat per year operation. The mining technologies being considered include state-of-the-art, remotely operated sea-bed crawlers and high volume dredges feeding to semi-mobile processing platforms. The company&apos;s objective is to use the best proven technology to create an environmentally responsible operation with the lowest fixed operating costs and the longest and safest weather operating window of any offshore operator working Africa&apos;s diamond coast.

A comprehensive multi-disciplinary marine geological survey of northwestern Graham Island, Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, Canada was conducted by Offshore Survey and Positioning Services Ltd. of Vancouver, B.C. on behalf of the Geological Survey of Canada; Energy, Mines & Resources Canada, Pacific Geoscience Centre, Sidney, B.C. Canada during October 1984 and July 1985. The aim of the survey was to map both the surficial geology and geomorphology in order to identify and evaluate the nature of the nearshore sedimentation and recent tectonics including stability (slumps and scarps) seafloor faults (frequency and displacements) and both the classification and consistency of soil type boundaries and properties. Data was acquired by utilizing conventional indirect applied marine geophysical techniques including side scan sonar, precision echo sounding and complimentary soil sampling. During October 1984 a total of 320 line kilometres of data including 180 soil samples were acquired. During July 1985 a total of 300 line kilometres of data were acquired including 150 soil samples.
