With the present-day trend of rising labour costs and a lowering of production efficiency of workmen, it has become imperative that every effort be made to use manpower to the greatest advantage and to mechanize mining as much as possible. During the past few years this trend has gained much prominence in the Porcupine camp. In view of this, the executive of the Porcupine Branch considered that the Mechanical Movement of Muck would be a very timely subject for a Symposium. Accordingly a Committee was formed, with A. K. Douglass, Mine Superintendent for Delnite Mines, Ltd., as Chairman, and the Symposium was held in the Auditorium of the McIntyre Community Building, Schumacher, on March 25th last. Papers dealing with shovel loader and mechanical scraper operation at six of the larger mines of the camp were presented and discussed, and a tabulation was prepared giving data on the machines in operation at a total of eleven mines. The papers and tabulation, reproduced below, will doubtless be of considerable interest to operators of mines in all parts of Canada.

Some commercial copper electrowinning facilities use Cyquest N-900 (a polyacrylamide) or HydroStar (a modified polysaccharide) to improve the density and smoothness of copper electrodeposits. However, the effects of these additives have not been studied extensively in the open literature. Thus, the electrodeposition of copper at 40 oC from a non-stirred synthetic electrowinning electrolyte (40 g/L Cu2+, 160 g/L H2SO4, and 20 mg/L Cl-) in the presence of various concentrations of either additive was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). CV results show that neither additive has much effect on the nucleation overpotential of copper electrodeposition on stainless steel. However, Cyquest N-900 polarized the copper deposition reaction upon the return sweep. The EIS data indicates that Cyquest N-900 increases the reaction’s charge transfer resistance and creates a second low frequency loop. HydroStar had minimal effect on the electrochemical data generated by CV or EIS. Thus, the mechanism by which HydroStar affects the copper deposition reaction still needs to be determined.

Manipulation of pouring temperature is an efficient way to produce different microstructural features. In order to characterize the microstructure of rheocast billets due to different superheats of 615-695 °C, the parallel plate compression method was employed. Foundry 356 Al-Si alloy with different morphologies of primary a-Al particles were tested at different initial pressures of 4,8, 11,2 KPa, The resulted strain-time graphs were further treated mathematically to calculate viscosity of SSM billets. The interrelationships of viscosity, the microstructure and primary phase flow during compression are discussed, It is shown that the dendritic primary a-Al structure has the highest viscosity number which is almost three orders of magnitude greater than those for globular morphology, The current research have, for the first time, shown the validity and reliability of "parallel plate compression viscometry" method in characterizing microstructural evolution of Rheocast SSM billets.

"Nowadays, in order to fit environmental restrictions, automotive markets are demanding cast aluminum alloys working at high temperature (180–300°C). New generations of alloys are required for higher strength components in engine downsizing or start-stop systems which lead to higher loading and higher specific power and stretch current materials to their limits. Recently, transition metals, such as zirconium and vanadium, have been added as alloying elements into an AlSi7Cu3.5Mg0.1 alloy to improve physical, mechanical, thermodynamic properties with the aim of increasing service life of parts. In such alloys, the best mechanical properties are associated with the formation of precipitates through an optimum heat treatment sequence, including: solutionizing, quenching and artificial aging. This study is focused on the modified AlSi7Cu3.5Mg0.1 cast alloy with Mn, Zr and V additions for high temperature application. The characterization of the cast alloy in this study, firstly, helps to evaluate and understand its performance both chemically and structurally according to their physical state: as-cast or as-quenched. Comparison of precipitation kinetics between a binary Al-3.5%wt.Cu alloy and the AlSi7Cu3.5Mg0.1 (Mn, Zr, V) alloy has been characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, TEM observations and micro-hardness testing. The Kissinger analysis was applied to extract activation energies from non-isothermal DSC runs conducted at different stationary heating rates. The study focuses on the impact of the chemical composition such as Si content on the kinetics parameters.INTRODUCTION Pure metal Aluminum shows poor mechanical properties and its malleability is high, that is why alloying elements are added to the mixture before casting to improve physical, mechanical and thermodynamic properties (Javidani, 2015); such as Silicon (Si) for casting properties (castability, cold crack capability, wear resistance, shrinkage behavior), Magnesium (Mg) and Copper (Cu) to generate precipitation hardening systems. Aluminum hypoeutectic alloys (<12% Silicon) with Cu, Mg additions used in the automotive industry for manufacturing mechanical parts (Larouche & Javidani, 2014) are mostly subject, after casting, to precipitation hardening heat treatment (Mohamed & Samuel, 2012) according to specifications and associated standards. The best mechanical properties are associated with the formation of precipitates through an optimum heat treatment sequence, generally including: solutionizing, water quenching and artificial aging (Manente & Timelli, 2011). Hypoeutectic aluminum-copper alloy with amount of Cu around 1 to 4.5wt% is an elementary case for precipitation in heat treatable aluminum alloys. Researchers essentially focused their work on the full precipitation sequence of binary Al-Cu alloy during aging which is presented below."

"IntroductionThis chapter will discuss the operational and maintenance aspects of a heavy media cyclone circuits as applied to coal processing and using magnetite as the media. It deals with heavy media bath separators in terms of types of media, equipment, circuits, media recovery, maintenance, and product handling. It will detail heavy media cyclone operation and supplement the previously described topics.The heavy media cyclone was first developed in the Netherlands by the Dutch State Mines in 1945. A cyclone plant was not built in North America until 1961. Traditionally, heavy media cyclones have been used to treat size fractions between 1lz in. (12 .6 mm) and 35 mesh (0.5 mm). High maintenance related to heavy media bath separators has recently prompted some plants to crush all raw coal to minus 2 in. for treatment in heavy media cyclones.The heavy media bath separators utilize only the force of gravity to make the separation between heavy and light particles. This requires lengthy retention time which can lower capacity and also is inefficient for finer particles. A heavy media cyclone utilizes centrifugal forces which are 20 to 200 times greater than the force of gravity. This means the separation between coal and the impurities occurs very quickly, therefore a low retention time is required allowing cyclones to have high tonnage capacities. Also these greater forces allow better separation for the finer particle sizes.Heavy media cyclones are now widely used to produce both metallurgical and thermal coal. Work is in progress to reduce magnetite consumption, extend wear life, increase tonnage capacity, improve separation efficiency and automatically control these cyclone circuits."

Due to the increasing worldwide demand for raw materials and the resulting rise in commodity prices more expensive processing that is able to utilize complex ores becomes economically viable. This and increasing ecological awareness is why the interest in recycling and urban mining is steadily growing in Germany. In addition to that; landfills do also contain elements, which were not targeted over the period, when they were being accumulated. Examples are rare earths, indium, gallium, cadmium, arsenic, selenium and tellurium. Also copper, zinc and lead, the target components of ancient mining, can be obtained due to more effective processing and smelting technologies. Funding by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research, entitled "r³ ? Strategic Metals and Minerals ? Innovative Technologies for Resource Efficiency" also indicates the high level of strategic interest. It is against this background that the research project "Exploitation of the Raw Material Potential of Mining and Metallurgical Tips in Respect of Sustainability as Exemplified in the West Harz Mountains (ROBEHA)" has been implemented. A major concern of this project is the possible transfer of results to landfills in other areas. Therefore the development of an expert system based on the innovative processing methods and a method manual for urban mining are the central components of the investigation. This will provide an important contribution to the cost optimization of ensuing urban mining projects. To ensure the success of landfill mining projects it is necessary to record the composition and quality of the deposits accurately. Also the environmental impact caused by landfill mining and changes in the natural and cultural landscape will be considered in a multicriteria evaluation method. Depending on their origin the tips are divided into the categories mining, processing, and smelting. The content of a landfill and thus the economic potential in terms of urban mining is dependent on the type and composition of the deposits (host rock, gangue, and ore mineral), the available processing and smelting technology, and the target components at the time of mining. Zinc, for example, was not been processed until the 19th century, when it gained attention as being material of economic importance. After such knowledge about a landfill is obtained the decision for further investigations can be made. For a total of 158 landfills in the Harz Mountains, both the volume and the approximate contents of copper, zinc, and lead has been estimated for the different types of tips within past research projects. Based on the prices of the London Metal Exchange (LME) and a euro/dollar exchange rate of 0.76 (as of 03/05/2012) and assuming a minimum density of ? ? 1.5 t/m³ a average value of 1.6 billion ? in copper, zinc, and lead can be obtained. "At the start of a new shaft project, a specific number of ground investigations are performed. However, it is not uncommon that the ground conditions during shaft sinking may differ from the designed ones. Therefore, it is extremely important to use tools which minimize discrepancies and to include a monitoring system in the shaft design to collect sufficient data. The paper presents an overview of existing monitoring techniques and discusses future works required to improve, not only the construction during shaft sinking, but also the lining design methodology. INTRODUCTION In most cases, the investigations performed at the start of a new shaft are based on the analysis of rock and soil probes obtained from boreholes. In practice, such analysis performed on a single core often leads to different results when conducted by various experts. The discrepancy in core analysis influences further rock mass assessment and design assumptions. It is not uncommon that the ground conditions during shaft sinking may differ from the designed ones, which affects the estimated stress and strain state of the shaft lining. Therefore, it is extremely important to use tools which minimize such discrepancy and to include into the shaft design a monitoring system to collect sufficient data, which enables control of important phenomena, not only during shaft sinking but also during the life of the shaft. Furthermore, the information collected during shaft sinking, while it is important for proper shaft lining design and updates to the shaft lining due to the local mining and geological conditions, it is also important after shaft sinking. In the whole shaft lifetime, it is not uncommon that the shaft lining is damaged and the liner needs to be renewed (Figure 1) due to various reasons. For this purpose, detailed information collected during construction can be extremely important."

Corrosion resistance of the lead-based anodes directly influences the purity of the final product in the zinc electrowinning process. The anodic MnO2 layer that is electrodeposited on the anodes during this process can protect the anodes against corrosion. Sand-blasted anodes generate a uniform, adherent and shiny MnO2 layer, which gradually blisters and eventually sloughs off after several weeks. In this study, we attempted to develop a new method to stabilize the MnO2 protective layer on the anodes during the electrowinning process by providing suitable nucleation sites for electrodeposition of this layer. MnO2 particles (P80=40µm) were used as seed material for this purpose. Different techniques of galvanostatic and cyclic voltammetry polarizations, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) were employed to investigate the performances of the MnO2-seeded lead anodes. The experimental results showed that growth of the MnO2 layer is influenced by the MnO2 seed particles on the anode surface. The MnO2 layers electrodeposited on the MnO2-seeded lead anodes were uniform and strongly adherent to the substrate. This layer was more stable than those formed on the PbAg anode without MnO2 seeding. This could provide the anode with a higher level of corrosion protection. Moreover, formation of undesirable MnO2 mud in the electrolyte and the rate of manganese consumption were decreased when the MnO2-seeded lead anodes were polarized. These observations could be attributed to the different properties of the electrodeposited MnO2 layer on this anode in comparison with that formed on the PbAg anode.

"Mining Companies have producing assets in increasingly diverse portions of the world. It is not uncommon that the owner, the design team, the mine contractors and the operators are all based in different countries. While these assets are always subject to the regulatory requirement of those countries there have not been international standards available to review and evaluate these assets. This becomes particularly important when considering safety critical items such as tailings dams, vertical shaft systems and autonomous vehicles to highlight a few. The work currently being completed in ISO ensures these standards will be available and will be generated by and subscribed to on an international basis, thus removing the potential for patriotic partisanship and ensuring safe and predictable systems are installed. This paper will discuss the benefits of the international standards, the structure of the teams and working groups who are generating these standards as well as the process by which the standards are generated. This will allow insight into the creation of the standard and will aim to demonstrate the “neutral” and technically strong manner in which the generation of these standards is achieved. In addition, the paper will discuss the standards which have been produced in the last five years as well as the current standards which are in place. The finale will discuss upcoming work and the timelines in which it is anticipated these will be completed. The ISO/TC 82 – Mining was founded in 1955. This was an active committee until it was thought that the standards at the time were adequate and the Technical Committee was put on “Care and Maintenance”. In 2012 countries lobbied ISO to pull this committee from dormancy and restart it, this happened in in the same year."

"Froth flotation is widely used to selectively separate one or more minerals from an ore over a wide range of particle sizes with high efficiency. Bubble–particle attachment is one of the most critical steps in flotation. The objective of this project is to demonstrate the need for an innovative dual bubble generator to improve flotation efficiency. This dual bubble generator was designed to generate two different sizes (micron size and typical flotation size) bubbles. The micron size bubbles generated on the crevices of particle surfaces in venturi type of cavitation tubes enhanced the attachment of fine particles to the bubbles in conventional flotation systems. They also acted as a secondary collector, which has the potential to reduce operation cost and improve flotation recovery. The dual bubble generator was evaluated for a double refractory gold ore with 3g/t Au, 1.5 wt% TCM (total carbonaceous matter) and 0.7 wt% sulfides. The results were compared with those obtained using a commercial bubble generator. Compared with the commercial bubble generator, the dual bubble generator showed not only a higher gold recovery, but also an improved separation efficiency, demonstrating the potential of dual bubble generator in fine particle flotation.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation has been widely used in mineral processing and waste water treatment. However, flotation has been proven inefficient for fine particle recovery although it becomes increasingly inevitable to process fine particles with the depletion of easy processing ores. The critical problem of fine particle flotation is the low attachment of fine particles to flotation size bubbles due to their low collision rate. Based on a commonly acceptable flotation model given by R =F*[Pc*Pa*(1-Pd)], the probability of bubble–particle collision (Pc), attachment (Pa) and particles detachment from air bubbles (Pd) collectively determines fine particle recovery (R) (Yoon and Luttrell, 1986). Since Pc = (3Dp/Db) where Dp and Db are diameters of particles and bubbles, respectively, bubble size and particle size impact the bubble-particle collision in opposite directions. It is evident that the probability of bubble–particle collision decreases with decreasing the size of particles, leading to a low recovery of fine particles. In this case, reducing the bubble size and/or increasing the apparent size of particles by fine particle aggregation are clear means to improve fine particle recovery."

DISCUSSION AT QUEBEC MEETING MR. A. V. CORLETT: With drill holes radiating from a common point, is loading carried to the collars, and do you undertake to distribute the powder evenly? MR. R. V. PORRITT: When the collars of the holes, particularly the diamond-drill holes, are close together, two out of three holes are loaded only to within six or seven feet of the collars, and the intervening holes are loaded close to the collars. When the collars are farther apart, the holes are loaded close to the collars. No spacers are used, and the holes are filled solid with powder, this applying particularly to the diamond-drill holes, except, of course, where the collars are close together and some holes are not loaded close to the collars. MR. J. G. L. McCREA: I would like to enquire in respect to the various efforts made to reduce the cost of diamond drilling to the lowest point, what is. the relative cost of the solid bit to the standard bit? It would seem that the solid bit has the higher cost. MR. PORRITT: The non-coring or solid bit gives a slightly lower diamond cost than the coring bit. With the coring bit, the greatest diamond loss is on the inside stones, apparently due partly to vibration, but mainly to the core blocking against these stones. This condition, of course, does not apply with the non-coring bit. Our experience is that the non-coring bit, which drills out a much greater area, has a diamond consumption slightly less than the coring bit. The non-coring bit is sturdier, and is far less liable to damage in starting holes and in drilling through cracked or broken ground.

The froth phase in flotation has received much less attention than the pulp phase despite the fact that froth stability plays an important role in determining flotation performance. Froth stability is largely determined by the stability of thin foam films, which in turn has a strong correlation with the critical rupture thickness (Hcr) of the films. In the present work, a new approach to predicting the Hcr values of thin foam films in flotation froth phase was proposed and examined. The Hcr values were calculated using an advanced capillary wave model with input parameters being surface tension, film radius, capillary suction pressure, and intersurface force. The intersurface force was estimated by using the Stefan-Reynolds lubrication approximation to fit the measured thinning rates of single foam films formed in a Scheludko ring cell, where the film radii were less than 50 microns and were kept constant during the film-thinning process. A comparison between the predicted and experimental Hcr values was made for the films with the use of sodium chloride as background electrolyte and in the presence of various frothing reagents such as methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC), polypropylene glycol with an average molecular weight of 400 (PPG400), and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), at different concentrations and film radii. It was found that the model correctly predicted the trends of Hcr-versus-concentration and Hcr-versus-film radius curves. Moreover, the predicted Hcr values matched well with the experimental ones of the foam films containing either SDS or PPG400. For the foam films containing MIBC, however, the model overpredicted the Hcr values. The reason for this discrepancy was discussed.

"The possibilities of expanding the production rate from the Copper Mountain Mine have been examined using computer programs for analysing a complete range of data, beginning with the diamond drill assays and embracing all steps up to the final rates of return.Programs have been developed to calculate the mineralization inventory file, a matrix of blocks containing the grade and the type of mineralization estimated for each block. Given the topography, prices of metals and costs, the pit limits are optimized using a three-dimensional technique. Within the pit, ore reserves at any cutoff can be calculated. Mining of the pit is then simulated using an interactive production scheduling program on a timesharing computer. The annual tonnage and grade figures from the production schedule are input to a financial analysis program, where the present value and the rate of return are calculated at various metal prices. The expansion possibilities can be run through the programs with their respective costs, and evaluated using the rate of return on the marginal cash flow compared to the additional capital expenditure."

Control of the quenching capacity of the cooling water is of primary importance for maintaining the quality and recovery rate of ingots produced by direct chill casting. Industrially, this can be done using a cylindrical metallic probe undergoing rapid quenching by direct immersion in a reservoir filled with casting water. Such a test rig originally developed at Alcan Arvida Research and development Centre was modified and used to assess the role of key parameters affecting the boiling heat transfer. During the tests, the probe of the instrument undergoes the effects of different heat transfer mechanisms. An experimental study was performed in order to clarify the details of the probe-water heat transfer during rapid quenching. The heat flux along the surface was determined by mathematical modeling using the measured temperature signals, while the corresponding heat transfer regimes like stable and unstable film boiling, nucleate boiling and natural convection were identified by the analysis of high-speed video recordings. Between 1860 and 1890 -- from the time of the American Civil War to the last decade of the 19th Century -- nickel production in North America was dominated (even monopolized) by the output of the industrial complex of the Gap Nickel Mine near Lancaster, Pennsylvania and the American Nickel Works in Camden, New Jersey. In some years, from one sixth to one third of the world&apos;s metallic nickel supply came from this enterprise. Mining and smelting were conducted at Lancaster; a matte of high iron content was shipped to Camden for pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical refining to produce nickel metal, copper sulfate, and cobalt oxide. The high purity nickel product was rolled into sheet for marketing, primarily for coinage, as nickel had few other uses at that time. The undertaking experienced all of the problems that face the mining and metallurgical industries of today: declining reserves, high labor and fuel costs, high transportation costs, fluctuating demand and prices, pollution concerns, and foreign competition. The technical features of the geology; the mining, smelting, and refining operations; and some of the economic aspects are assessed. The view is taken from that of the present time -- seeking those lessons from history that we are supposed to learn or face the prospect of repeating the mistakes of the past.

"The development and industrial applications of magnetic liners have been around for decades. A Swedish company SKEGA first introduced the rubber magnetic liner, and then followed by the Chinese metal magnetic liners. Traditionally, both liners were used in secondary and regrind ball mills, especially for ores containing magnetic materials. Mostly steel balls or equivalent forged balls, usually below 60 mm in diameter, were used as grinding media. With the development of mineral resources over the years, SAG mills and larger ball mills have become the dominating components for comminution circuit design globally. Due to the larger ball mills and thus larger grinding balls (up to 80 mm) especially in non-ferrous metal industry, the application of magnetic liners has been very limited. Based on the new development of materials, the HMR Group Limited has been exploring new designs of magnetic liners which led to the invention of the Nano Steel Magnetic Liner (NSML). Recently, NSML had a successful application in a 5.5m x 6.5m ball mill with 80 mm balls at the Erdenet Copper Mine in Mongolia. Although the first set of liner had a service life of 12 months, the design of the second set was modified and improved to accommodate the operating conditions, which is expected to reach least 24 months service life. The original manganese steel liner only had about 8 months liner life.1. IntroductionMineral processing is an essential operation for the development and utilization of mineral resources. The effective concentration of various useful minerals depends on sufficient liberation of the mineral particles in the ore. The crushing and grinding process such as ball milling are the most common way to achieve proper liberation size. Mill liner is an eternal topic for the operations, not only because it protects the equipment, but also affects the mill grinding efficiency and availability. In recent years, magnetic mill liners have been developed that can easily meet the production targets with numerous benefits, such as zero maintenance, reducing specific energy consumption and improving grinding efficiency."

"This is a report on the combined application of ""long-chain"" flocculants and classifier cyclones in the field of slimes treatment, with emphasis on the simultaneous thickening and clarifying of industrial effluents, at low cost. The principle of the process described below involves: (1) the formation of small floes of relatively great strength, by sequential dispersion and conditioning, with average floe size of about 1501 microns; (2) the floes being of sufficient strength to withstand the shearing forces operating within a cyclone and consequently behaving as solid particles with an equivalent diameter (Stokes) that exceeds the size cutpoint of the classifier cyclone; (3) the removal of flocculated solids by means of a classifier cyclone the size cutpoint of which permits effective separation of these solids from the water. Results of test work to date indicate that a broader use of cyclones in industry is possible with the above types of flocculants because the submicron particles and colloidal material are readily collected and clear water is produced, with the attendant advantages of compact construction and low cost that are characteristic of centrifugal separation. The process generally permits classifier cyclones of medium throughput capacity (e.g. 12-in. diam.) to be used for clarifying effluents that contain minus 10-micron particles."

In particular, there were a good many times when we were greatly exercised in our minds as to whether we were justified or not in closing-off certain sections in the Allan mine. The difficulty in these cases arose from the fact that a peculiar smell could be detected in these sections but at the same ti me there was no positive evidence of spontaneous combustion either from heat being apparent or from the possible indications of fire getting any worse. It was suspected that the small percentage of -carbon monoxide that could be obtained by analysis in the air in these sections, and also the peculiar odour, were emanating from the coal itself, and, in order to verify this, bore-holes were drilled in the coal and the gases released from these bore-holes were analyzed. They were found to contain carbon monoxide. After quite a considerable length of time this contained carbon monoxide gradually diminished and finally could not be detected when analyzing such samples of gas. It was our intention to follow this matter up further, as such an occurrence of carbon monoxide is practically unknown, but the sections in which these occurrences were found had to be abandoned. Mr. Gordon referred t0 a case of spontaneous combustion in the Allan . mine, and I may say that, although the section in which that occurrence took place was travelled and carefully examined every day by the colliery officials, yet nothing unusual was noticed until the fire actually took place. This tire was the cause of a slight explosion.

A fleet management system such as Minestar with CAES and Aquila could basically be defined as a tool for production control and distribution of drill and load maps, but should also be considered as continuous improvements and a never ending production study. The objective of production studies is to establish facts to be used for production improvements. In a mine operation there are many issues to improve and they spread from achieving productions plans, drilling precision, improved spotting while loading to equipment utilisation. This gives that there is not one single key value to present; we need to manage information presented on maps, as trends, graphs, tables and pre-calculated data for ?free-use? normally in spread-sheets to be able to turn data into useful information.
