"The selective adsorption of a flotation collector to a mineral plays a crucial role in enhancing the hydrophobicity of targeted mineral particles for attaching air bubbles in pulp. The recent progress of the structure-reactivity relationship of flotation collectors, the characterization methods for mineral surfaces with adsorbed collectors and their commercial application are reviewed in this paper. Particular emphasis is placed on the density functional theory (DFT) for understanding the reactivity of new collectors, the surface analysis techniques including time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), in situ scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) to characterize mineral/collector interface, and the flotation technologies for optimizing recovery of valuable minerals. Especially, the recently developing collectors such as Gemini, alkoxyalkylthiourea, dithiourea, amide-hydroxamate and oximido-thiol surfactants, and their specificity to given minerals are evaluated. Based on this crucial review, it is evident that the structural modification approaches for minerophilic or hydrophobic groups, and combined surface analysis approach for further understanding the adsorption mechanism of collectors on mineral surfaces will lay a solid foundation for the future development of flotation collectors. INTRODUCTIONIn mineral processing, flotation is the main process for separation and recovery of valuable minerals from the ores contained them (Fuerstenau et al., 2007). One of the key requirements in flotation process is to increase selectively the surface hydrophobicity of the targeted minerals by collector adsorption so that these mineral particles can preferably attach to air bubbles in a slurry or pulp (Fuerstenau et al., 2007). Flotation collector is a kind of functional surfactant, which is composed of polar and non-polar groups (Somasundaran, & Wang, 2006). Non-polar portion, commonly being linear, branch or ring hydrocarbon group, is termed hydrophobic group. The polar portion, exhibiting strong affinity to mineral surfaces, is known as minerophilic group (Nagaraj, 1988). According to mineral types including saline, oxide and sulfide minerals, flotation collector divides into sulfide and oxide mineral collectors. For efficient recovery of valuable minerals from the refractory complex ores, insights into the adsorption mechanism, hydrophobic model and subsequent flotation approach of flotation collectors have been regarded as an indispensable issue in mineral processing."

The behavior of gold in hydrothermal systems is evaluated as a function of pH and oxygen and sulphur activities at temperatures to 250°C. Under conditions of stability of pyrite and argillic alteration as emblages, gold will be transported as bisulphide complexes. In systems containing significant amounts of arsenic, thioarsenide complexes may be important. Oxidation, dilution and reduction in sulphur activity would cause gold deposition from saturated solutions under these conditions. Gold chloride complexes will predominate under oxidized conditions where hematite or other oxides are stable and depo ition would result from increase in pH and/or reduction . Absorption and coprecipitation are po sible mechanisms of deposition for gold in certain low grade depo it . Low concentrations of gold in the transporting solution combined with the ignificant solubility of gold as bisulphide complexes, sugge t hydrothermal solutions rarely may be saturated with gold and coprecipitation with sulphides may be an important initial depositional process. Recrystallization of the sulphides in the presence of the hydrothermal solution would be re ponsible for release of gold to more table ite . "The eastern portion of the Late Precambrian geosynclinal structure known as the Labrador Trough comprises a 16,000-square-mile sulphide-bearing belt of good potential as a base metal exploration area. Hollinger and Hanna mining interests have carried on exploration in the region since 1953, with encouraging results. This program has been considerable in terms of both effort and expenditure, and has resulted in an apparently successful primary evaluation of the entire belt.Much detailed work remains to be done in the area. Exploration to date has been largely of a reconnaissance nature, employing various methods in common use in Canada today. In the course of this work, several deposits of promise, containing near-economic quantities of copper, zinc, nickel and other metals, have been located. A broad classification of these deposits is proposed.Exploration in the sulphide belt was started on the basis of partial control of the area under mineral exploration concessions. This was necessary to justify operations in an area of difficult access and high operating costs. The results of this now-terminated arrangement are regarded as being of benefit to those directly concerned as well as to the mineral industry in general."

"IntroductionThe Republic of Indonesia is a developing Southeast Asian country that unites the Indian and Pacific oceans, and spreads across nearly 14000 islands with a total land area of about two million km-. The distance across the country approximates the distance across Canada: Indonesia extends for more than 6000 km from the northern tip of Sumatra to the eastern border of Irian Jaya in the middle of New Guinea. With a population of around 180million, Indonesia is one of the world's most populous countries. A mix of 366 ethnic groups populates the country and there are some 250 distinct languages spoken. The topography of Indonesia generally is quite rugged because of its numerous volcanos. For example, the island of Java has 121 volcanos, of which 15 rise above 3000 m and another 44 reach heights between 2000 m and 3000 m.Indonesia has a diversified resource base, with plentiful energy resources (coal, oil, gas and hydroelectric), significant mineral deposits, large timber potential and a developed system of agricultural commodity production and export. A high proportion of the primary resources are on the sparsely populated islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan, whereas 7'3 of Indonesia's people reside on Java, or on 70/0 of the country's land area. Around Jakarta in western Java the population density is around 8000 per krn2. This contrasts with less than nine people per km- on Sulawesi (Fig. I)."

"Solvent extraction (SX) is one of the most effective techniques for the multi-metal separation. However, repetitive pre-treatment of feed-in solutions and/or multi-steps two phase equilibrating in conventional SX processes were always unavoidable due to the poor separation selectivity between those metals with similar physicochemical properties. In this paper, our recent efforts, aimed to develop a “Three Liquid Phase Extraction” (TLPE) strategy for one-step separation and selective enrichment of different metals respectively into three coexisted liquid phases, are reviewed. Various feasible “Three Liquid Phase Systems” (TLPS) are evaluated. The TLPE technique provides a potential possibility for multiphase extraction to separate multi-metals.INTRODUCTIONLiquid-liquid Solvent Extraction (SX) is one of the most effective techniques for metal separation and purification. Traditionally, extraction and separation of multiple valuable metals from the leaching solutions of complex ores, industrial wastes and byproducts have to face such difficulties that multiple target metals with similar physicochemical properties co-exist in the solutions, and therefore their mutual separation selectivities are very poor. In conventional organic-water two phase SX processes, repetitive pre-treatment of feed-in solutions including the adjustment of the solution acidity, removal of impurities and/or multi-step liquid-liquid two phase equilibration were always unavoidable (Wang and Chen, 2001). Only one of the target metals is obtained in each extraction step, therefore the whole separation processes for multi-metal separation are typically very long and costly.Liquid-liquid-liquid three phase extraction is a developing technique for separation of complex systems containing multiple target components (Tan, 2003; Shen, 2006; Yu, 2009). The technique is in fact a three-liquid-phase selectively partitioning of different target components through the control of phase-forming behaviors of extraction system to create a unique separation medium with three co-existed liquid phases. The separation selectivity of “Three-Liquid-Phase System” (TLPS) may derive from its three-layered liquid phases from up to down with different hydrophobic or hydrophilic environment, and therefore each phase has its own specific selectivity for dissolving of an individual component. In a well designed “Three-Liquid-Phase System” (TLPS), multiphase extraction and selective separation of different components respectively into three different liquid phases can be achieved by only one-step of extraction. Owing to its distinct advantages, “Three-Liquid-Phase Extraction” (TLPE) technique has found many potential applications in purification of various organic chemicals (Shen, 2007) and biological activities (Chen, 2002; Tan, 2006; Jiang, 2008), treatment of environmental wastewaters (Shen, 2006; Yu, 2009; Yu, 2010; He, 2012), extraction of valuable components in natural products (Liu, 2010) and separation of multi-metals in complex leaching solutions (Jin, 2009)."

"IntroductionALTHOUGH the presence of rock salt in the Carboniferous basin of northern Nova Scotia has been known for at least one hundred and twenty years, and salt has been mined at Malagash continuously since 1919, certain characteristics of the deposits make exploration by drilling or surface examination difficult. The surface rocks of the basin are, in general, of Pennsylvanian age, while the salt occurs in the Mississippian Windsor group. The latter rocks are brought to the surface only along anticlinal folds, or as irregular fault blocks. Because of the limited areal extent of these Windsor exposures, and their complicated internal structure, geophysical surveys, especially gravimetric, can be of considerable aid in outlining the more favourable areas.The present paper describes the results of recent investigations by the Dominion Observatory, in cooperation with the Nova Scotia Department of Mines. It includes a regional study of that section of the Cumberland basin lying between Springhill and Malagash ( Figure 1), and a much more detailed survey of the immediate vicinity of the Malagash deposit itself. This deposit had been studied by Miller (6, 7) with the torsion balance nearly twenty years before, and a direct comparison between the results given by the two types of instruments is therefore possible."

"Recovery of gold from refractory ores and concentrates presently constitutes one of the most important, challenging, and exciting areas of R&D activity in the gold processing industry. New technologies are being tested for the treatment of refractory gold materials, some of which have been advanced to the level of commercial operation. In this paper, some recent technological developments in the hydrometallurgical processing of pyritic matrix-refractory gold ores are highlighted. Key operational steps of each of the alternate hydrometallurgical technologies are analyzed and potential advantages and drawbacks are identified. The processes which are reviewed are: hydro chemical oxidation, biochemical oxidation and pressure oxidation. INTRODUCTIONOver the years the term ""refractory"" has been applied in gold ore processing to denote situations in which straightforward cyanidation failed to yield high gold recoveries. A number of mineralogical and chemical factors may be responsible for this ""refractoriness"" problem. A systematic classification of the different options for their treatment has been discussed in a recent review paper. In this paper, the pretreatment of the submicroscopic gold encapsulated within the matrix of pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals is considered. This type of gold is the ultimate refractory material because complete breakdown by reaction of the host mineral structure is required.The method which has been traditionally applied for the treatment of pyritic-type refractory gold ores is an oxidation roast (single stage or double stage depending on the As content) of a flotation concentrate to produce a porous calcine, the latter being more amenable to cyanidation. Despite its established practice, oxidation roasting is not considered particularly attractive with today's standards for high product recovery and clean environment. Roasting is known to be very sensitive to heating parameters and feed composition and deviation from optimum conditions can result in reduction in permeability which is translated to incomplete gold liberation."

A novel process for the preparation of a-Al2O3 from secondary aluminum dross was studied. Factors including alkali dross ratio, salt dross ratio, smelting temperature, smelting time, leaching temperature, leaching time, and the solid-liquid ratio, which possibly influence the transfer of Al into water were studied, and the feasibility of using seed precipitation as a treatment technology of the leachate was discussed. The optimum condition of the process was determined as: alkali dross ratio 1.3, salt dross ratio 0.7, smelting temperature 500°C, smelting time 60min, leaching temperature 60°C, leaching time 30min, solid-liquid ratio 1:4. The results show that using the seed precipitation method, the leaching of aluminum reaches 92.71%, demonstrating the technique as a feasible and effective treatment technology of the leachate.

L'association entre la minéralisation, la distribution de la réflectance de la MO et des AMA suggère que ces traceurs peuvent servir à I ‘exploration des sulfures de métaux de base dans cette région.A I ‘emplacement du gîte, la réflectance varie considérablement (0,8% à 1,88%), pouvant même afficher une baisse avec I ‘enfouissement, ce qui est interprète comme une altération chimique de la MO. Les valeurs les plus élevées s'accompagnent localement de quelques textures en mosaïque et délimitent une anomalie thermique au centre sud de la région. Parmi les minéraux des argiles identifies, I ‘illite et la chlorite sont terrigènes alors que la smectite, la kaolinite et la corrensite sont authigènes et, à l' instar de I ‘altération de la MO, résultent des nouveaux équilibres chimiques créés suite à la précipitation des sulfures.Abstract - The Gays River Pb-Zn ore deposit is associated with anomalies defmed from the characters of the organic matter (OM) and from the clay minerals assemblages. The relationships between these anomalies and the mineralization at the mine suggest that these parameters can be used as new guides for the exploration for base-metal sulfides in this area.The vitrinite reflectance (RJ shows a wide range of values (0.8% to 1.88%) and exhibits an anomalous suppressive effect with depth of burial at the mine site, suggesting a chemical alteration of the OM. The highest R"" values are associated with mosaic textures and outline a therrnal anomaly at the south-center of the studied area. Among the identified clay minerals, illite and chlorite are terrigenous, whereas smectite, kaolinite and corrensite are authigenous and, like the alteration of the OM, are due to the new chemical equilibria resulting from the precipitation of the sulfides."

Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) and Carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes are used extensively in the gold mining sector to recover aurocyanide from solution. This paper discusses the modelling of these operations, using various simplifying assumptions, in order to simulate the effect of changing operating conditions on the dynamics of the system. It is assumed that the adsorption and leaching rates are a function of concentration difference between the source phase and recipient phase. The simulation was set up using Matlab's Simulink interface. Plant variables are solved using a medium scale Newtonian search algorithm in Matlab, where the differences between the actual and predicted plant outputs are minimized on a continuous time-line.

In spite of various corrosion studies on HPDC AZ91, there is no clear indication which microstructure gives the best corrosion performance. The skin with its fine microstructure is sometimes reported to have the best corrosion resistance, but there is no clear definition of the skin. If the skin is the outermost part of the casting and nothing is removed from it, then it is contaminated and the corrosion resistance is low. If the outermost skin is removed (about 25 µm) then a better corrosion resistance can be obtained. However this does not automatically mean that there is no other region in the bulk of the casting which could have a similar or even better corrosion resistance. Indeed, the corrosion measurements including potentiodynamic polarization and long term electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) revealed a lower corrosion resistance of the original as-cast skin about 100 pm thick. The thickness of this region is more or less independent from the thickness of the casting section. The surface region is free from any dendritic grain growth which influences the amount and distribution of the 13-phase and therefore the distribution of the most important alloying element Al. This could explain the different corrosion behavior. Further reason can be found in the enrichment of some impurities such as Fe in the near surface.

An area of about 7,000 square miles within the eastern part of the Grenville Sub-province is underlain chiefly by granitic gneisses. There are, however, some exposures of mafic rocks which warrant further investigation, and some attractive structures, particularly basins, which deserve additional economic consideration. T HIS paper describes in a very general fashion the economic and geological features of an area of about 7,000 square miles on the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence in the eastern part of the Grenville Sub-province (Figure 1). The scarcity of published geological data on this part of the Cana-dian Shield (DePuyjalon, 1899 and Longley, 1944) justifies the presentation of these tentative results. It should be appreciated, however, that the information which follows was acquired in a rapid reconnaissance designed specifically to out-line what might be interpreted as favourable geological environments for the occurrence of economic minerals, rather than to produce an authoritative analysis of the geological history of the region.

"Pellet quality has taken on a new dimension during the last ten years. Quality in the seventies was generally defined as adherence to certain physical and chemical specifications. Today, the talk is in terms of how the business is managed, how customer's expectations can be exceeded, not only in product quality, but in service responsiveness.Coke breeze and flux additions, lower silica levels, and improved furnace control practices have all contributed to the improvement of pellet physical and metallurgical properties. Statistical process control has provided additional insight into the parameters that affect pellet quality.Increased customer contact and product quality surveys have heightened our awareness of customer needs and also provide direction for quality improvement test work. Current work is focussed on improving reducibility and understanding the relationship between tumble, fired compression and metallurgical properties.This paper will review the Iron Ore Company of Canada's efforts during the past decade and describe some of its initiatives for the future.IntroductionThe Carol Pellet PlantThe Iron Ore Company of Canada's Carol Project is located in Labrador City in the southwestern portion of Newfoundland and Labrador , approximately 965 Ian northeast of Montreal. The project consists of mining facilities, beneficiation complex and a pellet plant, which began operations in 1962. The pellet plant consists of six Dravo-Lurgi straight grate machines, regrinding, filtering and balling facilities. The current capacity of the Carol pellet plant is approximately 10.5 million tonnes , while the concentrator has the capacity to produce about 18 million tonnes of concentrate.The orebody consists of specular hematite, magnetite and small quantities of limonite and goethite. The average grade of the orebody is approximately 39% iron."

"With declining feed grade and increased production targets, it became necessary to upgrade Key Lake's eight stage counter current decantation (CCD) circuit. Following laboratory trials, mill operations recognized that dilution of the feed slurry and buffering of the feed density variations would improve thickener throughput. Plant testing resulted in the installation of Outokumpu's Supaflo ""Floe-Miser"" system. The circuit's flowsheet, instrumentation and control strategy were also upgraded along with the thickener feedwell modifications. The paper will also discuss these modifications and the implementation of the current control strategy.IntroductionCameco Corporation's Key Lake operation is the largest single uranium producer in the world. Current production is fourteen million pounds of uranium oxide (U 308) per year. It is owned 2/3 by Cameco and 1/3 by Uranerz Exploration and Mining with Cameco as the operator.The mine is 570 kilometres north of Saskatoon on the southern edge of the Athabasca basin. Access to the mine is by an all-weather road and a private airstrip.Process DescriptionThe Key Lake milling process consists of five individual plants: crushing and grinding; leaching and counter current decantation (CCD); solvent extraction; yellowcake precipitation and ammonium sulphate crystallization; and bulk neutralization (Figure 1 -Simplified Mill Flowsheet). "A large amount of platinum group metals (PGM) are used in automobile catalyst. It is important to recover the metals from wasted catalyst. Nomura and Kageyama (2013) suggested recovery process that PGM oxides were absorbed to perovskite-type oxide based on LaScO3. In their process, the PGM in wasted catalyst as absorbed to the perovskite-type oxide as PGM oxide. It has potential to each element in the process if the perovskite-type oxide is selected properly. In this study, the PGM oxide absorption properties of various perovskite-type oxides are investigated to develop a new recovery and separation process. The various perovskite-type oxide were synthesized with metallic platinum, palladium, rhodium at high temperature in air atmosphere. And the PGM contents in the perovskite-type oxide after the experiment are determined by chemical analysis. Some of them have the properties to absorb specific PGM oxide selectively. In addition, in order to increase the amount of absorption of PGM oxide and composition of the perovskite-type oxide experimental temperature was investigated. Then it is also found that doping another specific element to the perovskite-type oxide is effective to increase the amount of absorption of PGM oxide. Then a new recovery process of PGM from wasted automobile catalyst, in which PGM can be separate to each element, was designed.INTRODUCTIONA large amount of Platinum (Pt), Palladium (Pd), and Rhodium (Rh) are used in automobile catalysis (Figure 1) (Platinum, 2013). Natural supplies for these metals are limited and PGM mining can detrimental environmental impact. Therefore, the recycling of PGMs from wasted automobile catalysis is very important. The Rose process (Figure 2) was developed as a process to recover PGM from wasted automobile catalysis. In this process, the automobile catalysis is first crushed mechanically, and then extracting agent, copper (Cu), and flux are melted at high temperature. The mixture separates into a metal phase, (Cu alloy containing PGM) and slag. The PGM is enriched by oxidizing. Cu to Cu oxide. The PGM are then recovered and separated to each element in a wet process. However, it is hard to dissolve the PGM with acid because they are chemically stable and strong oxidation agent such as aqua regia is used. Moreover, to separate the PGM to each individual element, a solvent extraction process is required."

"One of the most significant developments in environmental law has been the development of mandatory project review processes, at both the federal and provincial levels.FederalWhile, in the past, project review processes have, f or the most part, been spelled out in guidelines, the guidelines have not had the force of law. All that has changed, particularly at the federal level, with the Federal Court decisions commonly referred to as the Old Man River and Alameda and Rafferty Dam cases. These decisions, taken as a whole, are authority for the proposition that the Environmental Assessment and Review Process Guidelines Order, SOR 82-487 is a law of general application, not a mere guideline which may or may not be applied. This federal environmental assessment process first provides for a screening, and, depending upon the results of the screening process, the possibility of a public review. This federal process only applies, however, when the proposal is being undertaken by a federal department, or where the Government of Canada makes a financial contribution, or where federal lands are involved, or where a federal licence or permit is required.Bill C-78, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, will replace the Federal Environmental Assessment and Review Process Guidelines Order once it has been passed by Parliament. Currently the bill is being widely discussed, both between governments as well as public interest groups.ProvincialOn the provincial scene, there are three project review processes, one concerned with new mines, the second with energy projects and the third with all other major projects. The most recent initiatives taken by British Columbia are twofold. First, the Mine Development Review Process which was in the form of a guideline, has been replaced by the Mine Development Assessment Act. Second, the Major Project Review Process has been formulated and is to apply to four main categories of major projects:1. Pulp and paper production;2. Mineral smelting and refining;3. Chemical products; and4. Major ports and marinas.Energy projects are governed by the Energy Project Review Process which is legislatively mandated under the Utilities Commission Act."

"Hyperaccumulator plants can be utilized as ‘metal crops’ in agromining operations. This emerging technology produces ‘bio-ore’ by growing ‘metal crops’ on sub-economic ore materials, such as natural ultramafic soils. In a typical application plant material is periodically harvested, followed by air-drying and incineration to produce the bio-ore intermediate. The bio-ore is of very high grade (>15 wt. % nickel), and of high purity, and may be processed into a number of different products (including nickel metal, nickelbased catalysts and pure nickel salts). Current research efforts from our team focus on Mediterranean climate field trials (Albania, Spain) and tropical climate field trials (Malaysia, Indonesia). Field-scale demonstrations are required to provide evidence of real-life performance and of economic viability. If the trials are successful, agromining may in the near future support local livelihoods with income opportunities as an alternative type of agriculture: to farm nickel.INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDHyperaccumulators, plants with the exceptional ability to uptake and concentrate trace elements in their shoots, can be utilized as ‘metal crops’ in agromining operations (Van der Ent et al., 2013a; Chaney et al., 1998; 2007; Baker et al., 2010). Agromining produces ‘bio-ore’ from harvested ‘metal crops’ grown on unconventional resources such as natural ultramafic soils (Van der Ent et al., 2015a). The bio-ore is a high purity and very high-grade (>15 wt. % nickel) product intermediate that may be turned into a range of different nickel products (nickel metal, nickel-based catalysts and pure nickel salts). The potential for agromining is greatest in tropical regions (Asia-Pacific Region: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia) where very large expanses of ultramafic soils exist (Van der Ent et al., 2013b). Agromine operations may replace existing marginal agriculture on poor ultramafic soils, for example oil palm plantations that require high fertilizer inputs to be profitable, or take place under a cocropping regime. The ability of ‘metal crops’ to achieve high nickel concentrations in biomass (and hence in harvested bio-ore) from soils with just <0.5 wt. % nickel, makes it possible to access non-conventional resources, not accessible by traditional mining techniques. For example, agromining could be implemented both on the large ‘halo’ around the mine leases, and as part of the progressive rehabilitation process after conventional resource extraction. As with all methods for resource extraction, agromining will be finite due to the diminishing concentrations of nickel in the zone accessible by plant roots (Chaney et al., 2014). Nevertheless, considering soil materials with 0.2 wt. % nickel and ‘metal crops’ with a yield of 100 kg nickel ha-1 the agromining venture may be sustainable for decades (Van der Ent et al., 2015a)."

For the benefit of those who are not familiar with the history of the western Provinces-Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta-as regards our natural resources, a few words of explanation may be in order before taking up the consideration of the Mines Act of 1930. In 1867, The British North America Act was passed by the Imperial Parliament. That Act, which is our constitution, created a union between the provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Upper and Lower Canada (now known as Ontario and Quebec respectively) under the name of the Dominion of Canada. Provision was made therein for embracing other parts of Canada from time to time. That portion of Canada which today comprises the Provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta and the lands to the north of them, was then known as Ruperts Land and the North West Territory. In the year 1670, King Charles II had granted by Letters Patent to Prince Rupert and his associates, known as ?The Governor & Company of Gentlemen Adventurers of England, Trading into Hudson&apos;s Bay?, commonly known as the Hudson&apos;s Bay Company, the lands and territories therein described, being roughly all the lands adjacent to and west of Hudson&apos;s bay; also the gold and silver to be found or discovered therein and other rights as more fully described in said Letters Patent. The land so granted was called &apos;Ruperts Land&apos;.
