Copper, a world commodity, and the first metal used by man, played a great part in the beginnings of modern civilization, which rests so dependently on the utilization of metals. Then, long after the close of the so-called 'bronze age,' when iron and steel had attained great prominence as the world's most important metals, the practical application of electricity to industry and commerce, for the improvement of every phase of man's multitudinous activities, gave a new impetus to the production of copper. Improved metallurgical practice made it possible to work low-grade properties at a profit. Research disclosed many new uses for copper. The metal, now produced from the mines of the world in the proportion of about one pound to every 50 tons of pig iron, has attained an importance which rivals that of iron and steel in the commerce and daily life of every nation. New fields of copper-bearing ore have been discovered in Canada in recent years. Established mines in the United States and Chile are producing on a great scale. Africa looms up as one of the great question marks in the future of copper. Whereas, a few years ago, the end of the world?s resources was predicted as being in sight, the evidence now available seems to show that the copper production of the world is likely not only to continue, but to increase for a long time yet to come. Canada's future in copper is a great subject; in the present paper only a few of the most outstanding factors affecting Canada's destiny in this large field may be noted, but if consideration of the points raised herein serves to focus attention on the magnificent possibilities of Canada as a producer of copper, the preparation of the paper will be more than justified.

Although the title of this paper focuses attention to the Winnipeg coal market the following remarks should be considered applicable not only to conditions in Winnipeg but to the whole western coal industry. Technical descriptions of coal and coal-burning have been omitted. These details are already covered in other numerous publications. In discussing a market the first consideration must be the product which is required to be sold. The class, quality and price at the point of origin must be taken into account and therefore this feature will be discussed before proceeding to outline conditions in the Winnipeg local market. The writer thinks of coal as a manufactured article, not, as it is generally considered, a fuel to be dug from the ground and dumped into the consumer's bin. The work of manufacturing must be considered in detail:- 1. Consider first the coal as it is in the ground: (a) What is its fuel value? (b) Where is its market? © With what will it be in competition? 2. Consider secondly: (a) What it will cost to mine the coal. (b) What has to be done to prepare the coal for market after it is mined. This must be considered in conjunction with the answer to question 1 ©. 3. Thirdly, consider the method of business to be adopted by the producer:- (a) Is it proposed to build a market on price? Or (b) On quality?

Although the existence of precious metals, particularly those of the platinum group, in the nickel ores in the Sudbury district has been known for a good many years- almost as long as the ore deposits themselves- the Mond Nickel Company were the first to effect their recovery on a commercial scale. The precious metals values of the different Sudbury ores vary considerably, and are generally higher in the copper-rich ores. These values are so very small that a direct determination in the ores gives quite unreliable results. This is not surprising if one considers that some of the ores contain on1y one unit of total precious metals in about two million units of ore, and that this one unit will consist of seven different metals, each with a different chemical behaviour. It is only after the ores have been smelted to a Bessemer matte containing about 80 per cent combined copper and nickel that the precious metals content can be determined with some degree of certainty. From the figures thus obtained, the precious metals content of the ores can be calculated, provided the tonnage of ore used to produce one ton of matte is known. The recovery of these minute quantities of precious metals out of ?such a large amount of gangue and sulphides of iron, copper, and nickel seems at first glance a commercial and technical impossibility. Nevertheless, science has found a way to conquer all the difficulties, and quite substantial quantities of the precious metals contained in the Sudbury nickel-copper ores have been regu1arly recovered for many years by the Mond Nickel Company.

An open-pit mining operation can be viewed as a process by which the open surface of a mine is continuously deformed. The planning of a mining program involves the design of the final shape of this open surface. The approach developed in this paper is based on the following assumptions: 1. the type of material its mine value and its extraction cost is given for each point; 2. restrictions on the geometry of the pit are specified (surface boundaries and maximum allowable wall slopes); 3. The objective is to maximize total profit-total mine value of material extracted minus total extraction cost. Two numeric methods are proposed: A simple dynamic programming algorithm for the two-dimensional pit (or a single vertical section of a mine), and. a more elaborate graph algorithm for the general three-dimensional pit. "The Gorleben salt dome has been investigated since 1979 for its suitability as a repository for the disposal of high-level radioactive wastes. The geoscientific surface exploration was followed by underground exploration of the site beginning in 1983: underground excavation work included the sinking of two shafts from 1986 to 1994, the excavation of the infrastructure area and of drifts located in the first exploration area EB1 within the following years. The exploration was interrupted for ten years from 2000 to 2010 as part of a moratorium. After the expiry of the moratorium in March 2010, the geoscientific underground exploration at the Gorleben site was resumed. The investigations were interrupted again in autumn 2012 due to a political decision. The exploration programme included extensive geoscientific investigations: geological exploration, geophysical investigations, mining exploration and mining observation, laboratory tests, in-situ geotechnical measurements, geological modelling and numerical model calculations. To analyse and interpret the results of the in-situ measurements and mining observation geomechanical, thermal and thermo-mechanical model calculations were carried out. One of the main elements of the in-situ geotechnical investigations were high-resolution geothermal measurements performed in boreholes used for geological exploration and geotechnical tests.The geothermal measurements are used to evaluate several geotechnical findings, e. g. drift closure, rock deformation, stress change, and are completed by thermal model calculations to analyse and interpret the results of in-situ measurements and mining observation. The model calculations have been carried out using the special purpose JIFE code. To consider the whole exploration mine with the adjoining host rock as well as the successive excavation of drifts and boreholes in detail a three-dimensional finite-element model was developed. The model calculations are used to analyse the cooling-off of the surrounding rock of the drifts caused by ventilation. The cooling-off of the surrounding rock is an ongoing process affecting the results of further geotechnical measurements in the near field of the drifts. To predict a realistic time and space dependent distribution of the temperature field of the host rock within the exploration area which is influenced by ventilation thermal model calculations are necessary. Comparing the calculated temperature field with the in-situ determined rock mass temperature field within the exploration area EB 1 the results show a sufficient agreement. Furthermore there is very good correspondence, both qualitatively and quantitatively, between the experimental and the calculated findings regarding the temperature profiles including the effects of excavation and ventilation of the drifts."

THE Dome ore-bodies are more or less isolated and are mined. by shrinkage stoping. An interwoven system of veins is mined at Hollinger '.1.nd requires close filling. Deep mining is the problem at McIntyre. Dome ore contains a large amount of free gold, which is recovered on blankets. An all-cyanide flow-sheet is \lSed in the Hollinger mill. Flotation concentration is an important feature of McIntyre mill operation. Therefore, these three mines afford an unusual opportunity to compare gold mining and milling methods. The purpose of this paper is to describe the conditions existing at the Dome, Hollinger, and McIntyre mines and to outline the mining and milling practice at each property. Figures 3, 4, 5, and 7 are reproduced from the Canadian Mining ]011rna/, September, 1935 (Young, A. W., Mining at Hollinger), and Figures 8 to 11 from the Engineering and Mining Journal, November, 1933 (Keeley, D. E., Development and Mining at McIntyre). The photographs (Figures 6, 12, and 13) are by The Canadian Government Motion Picture Bureau. "AbstractThe slow progress of conventional geological reconnaissance of the northern Canadian Shield during the past twenty years clearly indicates the need for a radically new field technique. Operation Keewatin, involving the use of helicopters as the traversing vehicles, was planned and executed by the Geological Survey of Canada in response to this requirement.About 57,000 square miles of District of Keewatin, N.W.T., were mapped during the 1952 field season in appropriate detail for publication at 1 inch to 8 miles. The Operation disclosed about 14,100 square miles of Precambrian sedimentary and volcanic rocks ranging in •age from Archaean to Late Proterozoic. About 7,700 square miles of this area are underlain by greenstone. This work was accomplished in a field season of 113 days, including the spring break-up. Routine aerial geological observations were made from two helicopters flying about 300 feet above the ground; these observations were checked by more than 1,700 landings and about an equal number of aerial observations from heights of less than 50 feet. Logistical support was •provided by a Norseman aircraft on skiis or floats. Combined helicopter and Norseman flying time was about 990 hours. More than 1-00 square miles were mapped per helicopter-hour, and about 815 square miles were examined each day that both helicopters operated. The reconnaissance cost about $207,000, or $3.63 per square mile mapped.As a result of this trial use of helicopters there is now available a reasonably proven method whereby an acceptable geological reconnaissance of the barren grounds of the Canadian .Shield within the Districts of Keewatin and Mackenzie might be completed within a decade. Thus, within a few years, it could place at the disposal of the prospecting and mining fraternity data which, by conventional methods, might not be made available to this generation. Due weight must be accorded this time factor when evaluating the aerial technique."

THIS paper is an endeavour to analyse the ideal and practical functions of government technical mining services, and their relationship to the National Domain, as well as to one another. its spirit is not critical, even though at times it may appear to besoin fact. It is a serious effort to divert a trend in public thought which delights in calling itself practical whereas it is really merely short-sighted. The author refers particularly to the idea that governmental research is a luxury which should be curtailed in the interests of economy, and turned over to private enterprise or the provinces. In order that we obtain the proper perspective of the question, it is advisable to indulge in a little history. In the year 1842, the Geological Survey of Canada was formed under the guidance of William (later Sir William) Edmund Logan. The literature on the founding and history of the Geological Survey of Canada is extensive, and therefore it is unnecessary to go into detail here regarding it. It might be mentioned, however, that the Geological Survey of Canada is only seven years younger than the Geological Survey of Great Britain (founded in 1835), and is only exceeded in age on the American continent by the State Geological Surveys of New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Michigan, which were founded between 1833 and 1836. In 1877, the Geological Survey became a permanent government institution as a branch of the Department of the Interior. It should be noted, however, that the Director of the Survey ranked as a Deputy Minister and reported direct to the Minister. This continued until 1907. In 1886, the Mineral Resources and Statistics Division of the Geological Survey was formed. Some years later, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (then the Canadian Mining Institute), backed by the mining press, began to agitate for the establishment of a Dominion Department of Mines, and in 1907 such a department was founded by the Geology and Mines Act of that year, with a separate Cabinet portfolio for the position of Minister of Mines.

The last extended copper smelting and converting survey dates back to the 2003 International Copper Conference held in Santiago, Chile. The following year, the Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society of AIME (TMS) started a new series in its Journal of Metals (JOM) called JOM World Nonferrous Smelters Survey devoting its first Part to Copper. The copper smelting landscape has significantly changed in the past 15 years, both in geographical terms with the shift of copper smelting production from the Americas to China and in technological terms with the growing adoption rate of Top-Submerged Lancing (TSL) technologies and the development and implementation of Bottom-Blowing technologies. A copper smelting survey update, even if not as in-depth as the 2003 Copper Smelting Survey, is therefore in order. The authors will review the latest trends in copper smelting technologies and production worldwide in comparison to the landscape of the early 2000s. INTRODUCTION This 2019 copper smelting survey is different from previous surveys as our data does not originate exclusively from responses to a questionnaire sent to all the copper smelters. Our data comes from several sources. We are therefore very thankful to the International Copper Study Group (ICSG) and Wood Mackenzie for sharing some of their information and to ENFI, Outotec, and Glencore Technologies for helping us cross-check our numbers for the Chinese smelters, flash smelting, Ausmelt, and Isasmelt technologies. Our survey presents data reporting from a total of 96 operating copper smelters from around the globe, which is significantly higher than the 50 surveyed in 2003. Although secondary smelting numbers have steadily increased over time, this paper focuses on primary smelting operations with copper concentrate as feed material. The list in this survey is still far from complete, with missing information from several known smelting operations. The total primary copper production tonnage of the smelters we surveyed amounts to 18.3 million metric tonnes from 29 countries representing 92% and 94% of total world primary production for 2018 estimated by ICSG and Wood Mackenzie, respectively. This representation has increased from 2003 when the total was 9.71 million metric tonnes from 23 countries accounting for 73% of world production. The trends presented and analyzed within this paper have stronger significance because of the increase in production accounted for. The Chinese and Russian smelter information collected is more detailed than years past. Our complete dataset is summarized in Table 1 at the end of our paper.

"Abstract - In 1989-1990, the SeaMARC II side-looking sonar (11 to 12 kHz) and swath bathymetric system imaged more than 80 000 km2 of the seafloor in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea and southern Arctic Ocean. One of our main goals was to investigate the highly oblique (115°) junction between the Mohns and Knipovich ridges, and to determine, using new morphotectonic data, whether or not this junction is stable or in a state of readjustment. These findings are presented in this paper.Along the northern Mohns Ridge, we observed a highly segmented rift valley undisturbed by transform faults. In contrast to the elevated Reykjanes Ridge, the Mohns Ridge is dominated by deep en echelon fault-bounded troughs, which are bordered by high rift valley volcanoes. These segment boundaries are interpreted to be sites of recent to present volcanic activity, based on their high acoustic reflectivity. The northwestern flank of the Mohns Ridge is marked by shallow quasi-linear ridges parallel to the present orientation of the Mohns Ridge. The orientation and geographic position of these ridges suggest that they were formed at the Mohns Ridge. Only in the northernmost cases are some of these off-axial ridges non-linear. The degree of the non-linearities increases slightly with proximity to the Mohns-Knipovich bend. In addition, because no transform fault was detected between the Mohns and Knipovich ridges, we conclude that the Knipovich Ridge must be obliquely spreading to the NW-SE."

A ventilation improvement index (VII) was developed in an effort to propose an optimal ventilation improvement measure for a designated mine. The index was designed to incorporate both ventilation effectiveness and cost efficiency. To verify the effect of the index, a mine experiencing a ventilation problem was selected, the ventilation assessed and ventilation network analyses were conducted. In the selected mine, four areas with ventilation difficulties were detected and an improvement schemes for each area were proposed. These were simulated through network simulation and evaluated using the ventilation improvement index. As a result, an optimum ventilation improvement scheme was proposed. The improvement scheme with the highest VII value was incorporated in the design.

"Discrete event simulation (DES) is a suitable framework to evaluate and optimize the dynamics of sulphide smelters. In particular, iron-nickel-copper-cobalt sulphides undergo continual oxidation within a roasting or smelting operation, followed by batch oxidation within the converting operation, thus producing iron-free Bessemer matte (or blister copper, in the case of copper smelters); this semi-finished product undergoes further processing to produce nickel, copper and cobalt products, and to recover precious metals. The juncture between continuous smelting and batch converting is often an appropriate focus for the earliest phases of DES development, since it is typically a major bottleneck within nickel and copper smelters; later phases may include increasing levels of detail for auxiliary unit operations, as well as plant logistics. Moreover, DES can support matte-slag chemistry, including Gibbs free energy balances to determine the iron speciation within the slag. DES is therefore capable of linking the fundamentals of oxidation reactions to the intricacies of plant dynamics.INTRODUCTION Discrete event simulation (DES) is gaining acceptance within the extractive metallurgy community, as a technique that quantifies the system-wide performance of metallurgical plants under conditions of uncertainty (Wheeler & McGinty, 2015). In particular, over 90% of smelters that process nickel-copper-cobalt sulphides and copper sulphides exhibit similar semi-continuous dynamics (Crundwell et al., 2011b; Schlesinger et al., 2011b), in which the converting aisle produces batches of material that are sent for further processing (Figure 1). Thus the tools and practices that are developed for a specific sulphide smelter are often relevant to numerous other smelters.The juncture between continuous smelting and batch converting has long been a focus for discrete event simulation (Welgama et al., 1996). Nonetheless, the broad acceptance of DES in nonferrous smelters has been hindered by interdisciplinary barriers that divide industrial and metallurgical engineers (Navarra et al., 2016; Noorossana et al., 2012); this divide has been less severe in steel plants (Hollocks, 2006). In recent years, DES has been used in copper smelters to analyze crane-and-ladle motions (Coursol et al., 2009a), reverts production and consumption (Noorossana et al., 2012), and innovative control systems (Herrera et al., 2016); additionally, DES models have accounted for shutdowns and random breakdowns to provide realistic assessments of copper smelter capacities, thus guiding equipment upgrades (Campbell et al., 2013; Coursol et al., 2009a). All of these studies feature a Peirce-Smith converting aisle similar to Figure 1 that, under normal operations, constrain the smelter throughput, and are thus a bottleneck (Campbell et al., 2013; Navarra et al., 2016)."

Abstract - The Ta-Nb-Zr-REE-rich McKeel Lake alkali granite pegmatite-aplite dike swarm is hosted within the late Silurian multiphase alkali granite intrusion (Welsford) near Browns Flats in southwestern New Brunswick. A steep easterly dipping series of pegmatite-aplite dikes trending 170º can be traced 150 m along strike; they are up to 40 cm wide, closely spaced (10-20 cm apart), and interconnected by narrow branching dikelets that generally trend perpendicular to the overall strike direction. The Welsford intrusion has mantle A-type affinities characterized by enrichment of Zr, Ta, Nb, Th, and rare earth elements (REE). Two separate sets of dikes have been identified: (1) an unmineralized fine-grained porphyry, which occurs at depth and seems to be the youngest intrusive phase; and (2) a mineralized pegmatite-aplite dike swarm (419 ± 20 Ma) that crops out at surface. The mineralized pegmatite-aplite dikes likely represent a late magmatic, highly fractionated phase of the Welsford intrusion. XRF and INAA data indicate that the Welsford intrusions and related pegmatite-aplite dikes show elevated levels of Ta (74-220 ppm), Nb (750-3,040 ppm), Zr (1,450-36,000 ppm), Y (540-3,070 ppm), Th (170-870 ppm), U (60-250 ppm), Ce (430-1,950 ppm) and Yb (110-290 ppm). Electron microprobe analysis of two samples identified Ta-Nb- and REE-rich phases: euxenite, fergusonite, aeschynite, (Y)-aeschynite, and a REE carbonate.

The primary aim of all ground geophysical work has been, of course, to locate orebodies. As with any geo-physical method, its success depends on a proper mastering of the types of surveys and equipment used and their application to the physical properties associated with the orebodies. The Schefferville deposits are iron ores subjected to enrichment by the process of leaching. Although some ore types are porous and low in demiity, most of the ore zones have had a net increase in density brought about by enrichment. In the course of their formation, the magnetic characteristics of the rocks have usually changed, as much of the magnetite was altered to relatively non-magnetic iron oxides and hydrous iron oxides. Ali drift-covered areas underlain with iron-formation are potential ore-producing areas. From these first two physical proper-ties and a determination of the thickness of the over-burden, a combined gravity-magnetic-seismic and/or resistivity survey allows for the detection and sorting out of iron-formation and potential ore zones from the country rocks. If the iron-formation possessed relatively uniform physical and chemical properties, the problem of locating areas underlain with ore, using geophysical methods, would be greatly simplified. Unfortunately, the iron-formation is a complex assemblage of rock types, each having different physical and chemical characteristics. In spite of this, qualitative and semi-quantitative correlation between the results of the surveys and the geology and structure of the area could be established. In addition, a semi-quantitative to quantitative correlation of the values of the residual gravity anomalies with the specific gravity, the iron content, the porosity factor, the dimensions of the under-lying orebodies and the values of the ground magnetic intensity above a reference lithologie unit, with the per cent weight Fe304 recovery and the susceptibility, led to the discovery of a direct-shipping iron ore deposit in the Schefferville mining district of Canada.

With the increasing awareness of the need for the reduction of carbon emissions globally, geothermal energy, which offers a potential for cleaner energy generation, is one potential new source. In Alberta, these geothermal resources are likely to be found in the sedimentary basin, or in the deeper crystalline basement rocks. Alberta exhibits a very low geothermal gradient compared to other existing geothermal fields located in areas of volcanic and tectonic activity. To mitigate this effect, the focus in Alberta will involve the development of engineered geothermal systems (EGS) in the target resource. The first goal for EGS research and development is to develop a detailed geological-geophysical characterization of selected sites to delineate potential geothermal reservoirs in Northern Alberta. One of the selected sites is in the Fort McMurray area. The deepest well drilled in the oilsands areas of Northern Alberta is located just west of Fort McMurray. It has a depth of 2363 m and as such can provide details on the physical properties of the rocks, the state of stress, and the existence of fracture porosity toward geothermal investigations. To date, we have acquired temperature logs to study the change in geothermal gradient with depth, and a series of petrophysical logs to study the finer scale structure of the rock formations with vertical resolutions in the range of 0.05 cm to 80 cm. Our aim is to identify geological features such as zones of fractures in the basin and/or basement that could provide an indication of enhanced fluid flow potential ? a necessary component for any geothermal systems to be viable. Zero offset and walkaway vertical seismic profiles (VSP) were also conducted to measure the seismic responses at the borehole. VSP data can be used to delineate the structural and stratigraphic features surrounding the borehole that could not be resolved from surface seismic reflection data that are also available near the borehole. The full integration of well logs, VSP data and surface seismic reflection data are expected to provide a detailed characterization of the sedimentary basin and crystalline basement rocks of the Canadian Shield in Northeastern Alberta and will assist in future planning for drilling.

"THE AREA which is described in this paper (Fig. 1) includes the continental margin of eastern Canada extending from the Gulf of Maine to the north edge of the Grand Banks, which, including the continental shelf, slope and rise, comprises an area of about 600,000 square miles. The paper is intended to give a background of the geological setting of this region in the context of its ultimate potential for oil and gas reserves in close proximity to the Nova Scotia energy market.HISTORY OF EXPLORATIONThe history of geological exploration of this area really began in 1878, when U.S. fishing boats brought back samples of rock recovered in trawls from their expeditions to the long-famous fishing banks off Canada's East Coast. Tertiary and Cretaceous fossils recovered from these samples indicated that the eastern Canadian continental shelf was actually the submerged northern extension of the Atlantic Coastal Plain."

A chemical process, based on laboratory investigations, is proposed for the production of high-purity niobium oxide from a pyrochlore-perovsk1te flotation concentrate produced from ore obtained at the Oka, Quebec property of Columbium Mining Products Limited. The method developed included the decomposition and dissolution of the flotation concentrate with hot, concentrated sulphuric acid. The dissolved niobium was purified and concentrated by a solvent extraction step, using methyl isobutyl ketone as the extractant. The niobium was recovered from the extractant with ammonium fluoride solution from which niobium oxide was precipitated with ammonia. Finally, the filtered and washed precipitate was calcined. Ninety-six per cent of the niobium was recovered in a product analysing 99.9 per cent Nzo.. The reagent cost was in the range of $1.00 to $1.25 per pound of niobium recovered. This document presents estimates of future "total cash cost per ounce" and "minesite cost per tonne" that are not recognized measures under United States generally accepted accounting principles ("US GAAP"). This data may not be comparable to data presented by other gold producers. These future estimates are based upon the total cash costs per ounce and minesite costs per tonne that the Company expects to incur to mine gold at the applicable projects and do not include production costs attributableto accretion expense and other asset retirement costs, which will vary over time as each project is developed and mined. It is therefore not practicable to reconcile these forward-looking non-GAAP financial measures to the most comparable GAAP measure.
