During recent studies concerning the effects that various surface treatments, surface imperfections, locked-in residual stresses and metallurgical and geometrical notches have upon the mechanical behaviour of metals and, in particular, upon their tension-bending characteristics under impact loads, it became apparent that specially developed methods and samples would be of great assistance in determining the desired data. This paper describes and discusses a number of different types of double-notched tension-bending impact samples which have been considered and examined for this purpose. The types most suitable for exploratory investigations are proposed for application in the study of the _behaviour of metals, their welds, and, in particular, their surfaces, when subjected to various notch-severities, surface imperfections, strain rates, temperatures, and constrained states of stress (i.e. the relations of the three principal stresses). It is expected that the proposed double-notched tension-bending samples and the proposed test methods will also contribute toward further understanding of the cold brittle behaviour and the notch-sensitivities of metals. This paper outlines the regional geology and history of the area, and summarizes the stratigraphy, structure and geology of the Brunswick No. 12 mine area. The Brunswick No. 12 deposit is a stratiform massive sulphide body. It occurs in rocks of the Tetagouche Group, which is believed to range in age from Lower to Middle Ordovician. The stratigraphic sequence, including the stratiform orebody, in ascending order consists of older metasedimentary rocks, augen schist, metasediments, augen. schist, footwall metasediments, the -massive sulphide body, iron formation, hanging-wall metasediments, siliceous tuff, basic volcanic rocks , basic iron formation and a porphyry dyke. This sequence is similar to that at some other deposits in the area. Four phases of structural deformation are known to be present in the Brunswick No. 12 mine area. The first deformation folds (F1 ) and associated faulting are the most important factors in determining the distribution of the massive sulphides. This deformation has resulted in the massive sulphides being separated into four zones: the Main Zone, the West Zone, the East Zone and the V-2 Zone. Sulfidic tailings, subjected to atmospheric water and oxygen action, can generate acid mine drainage (AMD); which is the most important environmental problem facing the mining industry. AMD generating potential can be assessed by the static tests which consist of a screening method where the neutralization potential (NP) and the acid-generating potential (AP) of a given rock sample are determined. The AP and NP are determined separately in the different static test existing procedures which can be divided into two distinct classes: chemical and the mineralogical methods. For some chemical method, the AP is calculated on the basis of total sulfide sulfur content in the sample which may overestimate its AP if significant quantities of non-sulfide sulfur species are present (e.g. organic S in coals, some sulfate as gypsum, barite, etc.). However, the mineralogical method evaluates the AP by the sum of the individual sulfides participation on acid generation based on their concentration within the sample and can be more accurate than the chemical method. For AP calculation, the Paktunc (1999a) mineralogical static test takes into consideration all sulfide minerals occurring in the sample. However, it does not take into account the rates of acidity production of these sulfides submitted to weathering conditions. So, the present study focusses on the modification of Paktunc AP calculation by considering the acidity production rates of these minerals. To reach this objective, five base-metal sulfides (pyrite as reference, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, arsenopyrite, galena), diluted within quartz (25?75 wt.%) simulating mill tailings were subjected to a kinetic test to evaluate their AP. The results show that all the studied sulfides minerals generate acidity at different rates, so the Paktunc?s equation for AP calculation has been adapted accordingly.

In general, the iron content of zinc leach residue produced by sulphuric acid leaching from calcine is disposed as jarosite or goethite into a tailing dam. More recently, these iron residues have been treated pyrometallurgically to avoid waste disposal. The Iijima refinery selected a different zinc leach residue treatment process for iron control when it was established in 1971. The Iijima refinery is the only plant in the world that has processed a zinc leach residue by the combination of SO2 pressure leaching and O2 pressure hematite precipitation. The process enhances zinc recovery and recovers gold, silver, copper, lead and rare metals in saleable by-products. This paper focuses on the two stages of autoclave application in the zinc leach residue treatment process. The detailed flowsheet and recent advancements to improve the quality of by-products are discussed.

A survey of the literature reveals wide differences in the procedures used in making iron ore pellets and in the properties of the pellets obtained. In this paper, the methods of production and the properties of pellets, as reported in the literature, are examined in an effort to determine what correlations exist between them. An attempt is also made to determine the levels of the properties of pellets which are considered acceptable and desirable in modern practice. M UCH has been written regarding the important changes which have been taking place recently in the iron ore industry. As the demand for ore has increased and the supply of direct-shipping ore has dwindled, tl1e problems associated with the utilization of lower grade ores ha\•e been intensely investigated and important advances in both beneficiation and agglomeration techniques have taken place. In particular, there has been a great deal of activity in connection with the pelletizing method of agglomeration. "There's no such thing as quality assurance; only quality control ... by inspection. "(1) A common misunderstanding in the procurement and construction of custom designed, fabricated pressure vessels and piping systems is that quality assurance can be achieved by simply referencing codes, standards, ISO 9002, QMS or other such programs in the contract documents. In the authors' experience, nothing could be further from the truth, not detrimental to the performance of the equipment than the exclusion of inspection activities and reliance upon warranties and "fit-for-purpose" clauses. Likewise, the expectation that fabricators, suppliers, or third party inspectors can provide such assurances is also unrealistic where they have limited knowledge of the process, material selection criteria, or limited technical resources. The development and successful execution of a quality assurance program is a collaborative effort by engineers, designers, material suppliers, equipment fabricators, and field inspectors with the full understanding and support of the end user.This paper presents an outline of the quality control activities undertaken by the authors for several recently completed and on-going hydrometallurgical projects. The activities include: prequalification of fabricators and sub-vendors, shop audits, material validation testing, material source control and verification, positive material identification of weld metal overlay, specialised welding inspection, contamination control for titanium and titanium-clad fabrication, eddy current and mass spectrometer (helium) leak testing of shell-and-tube heat exchangers, hot cycle testing of titanium clad equipment, tolerance verification for refractory lined equipment, final inspection and cleaning.

Introduction Coal cleaning may be taken as meaning the separation of coal-as-mined into two or more fractions. Coal cleaning includes coal washing, together with any other means used in the ultimate preparation of coal prior to shipment (as coal) . The method of coal cleaning devised for any given mine must be one which is based entirely on the economic results obtainable. The installation of a high-cost and complex washing plant, designed to produce a low-ash dean coal, at the highest possible recovery, may be unsound practice. A crude 'roughing' washer may be the best result of sound engineering and operating consideration, and in some cases coal cleaning should be confined entirely to preparation at the face. Consideration of complete costs, to the point where the coal is actually sold, may show that certain seams are workable or not workable. Of the seams found workable, extraction of the whole or parts of the seam may be decided on. The portion to be extracted may contain rock or bone partings, which must be removed. It may be good practice to mine the extra portion and remove the objectionable materials by surface washing; or it may be that such materials should be removed underground, even at an increased mining cost. For instance, in some of the steeply pitching seams of the Alberta Crow's Nest Pass district, the removal of bone and rock at the face may be almost impossible under the usual 'up the pitch' or 'angle' mining methods, but possible by mining across the pitch so that the material to be rejected can be removed and gobbed. Again, if a complete seam is being extracted, investigation may show marked differences between top coal and bench coal, and if sufficient mine cars are being loaded from a chute at one time, the fact that such a place is working top or bench coal at the time may be reflected by peaks in ash content or size proportions at the ripple. It may be very effective coal preparation to smooth out such peaks.

Introduction The pages that follow present a brief chronological survey of views which have been held, and of legislation enacted, for the regulation of the natural gas and oil industry in the Turner Valley field, especially as regards conservation of the natural gas. To provide a necessary background for an adequate understanding of the progress of events in western Canada, there is included also a compilation, from technical and legal authorities, of some of the more important measures which have been adopted for the regulation of the oil and gas fields of the United States, where these measures have had, or are likely to have, a bearing on the course of our domestic industry. Owing to exigencies of space, it has been possible to refer only to the most outstanding proposals and legislation, and to these in the briefest possible form. Although, so far as Canada is concerned, the data presented are restricted almost entirely to the Turner Valley field, it is the hope of the writer that the paper may prove of value for purposes of reference: for any similar gas and oil fields discovered in western Canada will certainly revive and intensify the problem of the proper steps to be taken for the conservation of the gas. Definition of 'Conservation The term conservation has been so misunderstood and misrepresented that, to many persons in Alberta, it means little more than closing-in wells. In the light of the definition of Charles E. Hughes, that 'True conservation of a raw material is its economical use', the subject of natural gas conservation is inseparably involved with the study of the function of the -gas and with the development of the principles of unit operation.

THE BIBLIOGRAPHY on the use of static electricity in mineral beneficiation consists largely of patents. Some references are found in mineral textbooks, but very little data on flow-sheets of commercial installations are known to the writer. As a matter of fact there have been relatively few successful commercial applications of importance. Johnson prepared and published a Table showing the polarity and static field intensity requirements of many minerals. There have been reports of successful beneficiation of rutile, zir-con, coal, potassium chloride, and phosphate rock. Otherwise, the field of success has been very limited. This may be due to three reasons: first, the mining industry has been averse to dry processes, be-cause of dust nuisances in dry crushing; second, the electrostatic processes used in the past apparently developed no substantial economic advantages; and third, because flotation or other . methods have proven successful on many minerals, the industry has not felt the need for a radically different process. In the feldspar industry there was ?an attempt at electrostatic beneficiation about twenty years ago which was based on the use of fluoride fuming of the pegmatite head feed, in order to make the mineral reactive in a static field. This process was originally said to be successful, but was discontinued because of corrosion damage to machinery. Another effort by use of a chemical additive such as an or-ganic hydroxyl compound has also been attempted. Neither of these processes is known to be in use today.

A study of the interfacial properties of the basal plane and the edge surfaces of talc is described in this paper. The isoelectric point measured at the two different crystallographic planes by the streaming potential method was found to be similar and exists at about pH 3.0. In the case of the edge surface the zeta potential increases at higher pH values which can be attributed to the hydration of magnesium ions at the edge surface. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) colloidal probe technique was used to measure interaction forces. For such experiments a 20 um talc particle was attached to the AFM cantilever and forces between the edge of the talc particle and two different crystallographic planes of talc were measured at various pH values. These measurements, while being qualitative due to the poorly characterized contact area, show differences between the properties of the base plane and edge of the talc and correspond to the results from streaming potential measurements. Finally, the differences in the hydration of the basal plane and the edge of talc are revealed from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The basal plane of the talc is much less hydrated than the edge, as can be seen from the water density distribution functions, which correlate quite well with the contact angle measurements at the basal plane surface and the edge surface of the talc sample.

Reconnaissance radiometric and geochemical data have been obtained for an area on the western shore of Wollaston Lake that includes the Rabbit Lake uranium deposit. The study area is extensively drift cover ed. The geochemical data were obtained by analysis of center-lake sediments and surface waters for a variety of elements and other constituents. The airborne radiometric data comprise measurements of eU, eTh and K obtained with a .50,000-cc NaI (Tl) detector at a mean terrain clearance of 120 m and 5-km flight-line spacing. Uranium in lake sediments and uranium in waters are the most effective geochemical indicators of uranium mineralization; the other elements measured are not notably anomalous. A sample site density of one per 1 8 km 2 is more than adequate for identification of the mineralized area. Because many water samples contain close to or below the current analytical detection limit of 0.05 ppb U, the use of sediments is generally favoured. for broad-scale reconnaissance in the region. Uranium in these lake sediments appears to be little influenced by variations in the organic or iron and manganese content. The most effective radiometric indicator of the mineralization is the eU/eTh ratio. This parameter is less influenced by environmental variation on the ground beneath the flight line than eU alone . The eTh/K ratio is anomalous under the Athabasca Formation unconformity where, in places, the uranium mineralization is localized.

Anglo American Corporation and the University of British Columbia have developed a medium-temperature oxygen pressure leaching process for the extraction of copper from chalcopyrite concentrates in an acid-sulphate system (AAC/UBC process). Leaching is performed at 150°C and surfactants are added to disperse molten elemental sulphur from the unreacted sulphide surface to prevent liquid sulphur occlusion. Copper extractions of over 95% and elemental sulphur yields of around 60% were observed over a 2-hour average residence time in a continuous pilot autoclave. Sporadic blockages occurring under continuous conditions were found to be caused by the accumulation of molten elemental sulphur mixed with unreacted sulphide mineral. A batch programme of experimentation was undertaken to establish the reason for this phenomenon. Batch experiments were conducted at low pulp densities on concentrate samples with narrow size distributions and at similar solution compositions to those experienced in the pilot autoclave. The overall rate of chalcopyrite oxidation was shown, under approximately constant solution composition, to be a strong function of the total available mineral surface area. Initial copper extraction rates followed the shrinking particle kinetic model under intrinsic surface control. Deviation from shrinking particle kinetics was however observed after a certain oxidation time. Secondary electron images identified small (typically less than 20 µm) sulphur conglomerates at the point of deviation, which 'collected' unreacted chalcopyrite mineral particles and lowered the total mineral surface area available for oxidation. These sulphur clusters are thought to be the precursor for blockages experienced in the continuous pilot autoclave. These results emphasised the importance of fine grinding (P80 5-20 µm) and suggest that shorter residence times may minimise the formation of sulphur conglomerates in a continuous autoclave operating at medium temperature.

"Abstract - As a contribution to the World Minerals Geoscience Database Project, an index-level database comprising information on 142 SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits and occurrences was constructed in Microsoft Access 95 format. Although consisting of only basic information, the compilation, with full referencing of all data, is possibly the largest non-corporate SEDEX Pb-Zn database in the world. It thus provides an opportunity to make geoscience queries of SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits on a scale not previously available. This report provides a summary of the results of a few such queries both as a contribution to a better understanding of SEDEX lead-zinc deposits and as a demonstration of what even such a simple database can offer.During the compilation process, it became apparent that SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits could be assigned to one of the following three sub-types: Type 1 (53.5% of total) in which sulfide minerals are the only exhalative components; Type 2 (33.1%) in which the exhalative components are sulfides plus chert, siderite/ankerite, and/or barite; Type 3 (13.4%) which contains any components of Types 1 and 2 plus abundant iron-oxide minerals (commonly magnetite) and/or is associated with iron oxide-rich sedimentary rocks.Highlights of systematic queries of the database reveal that:1. a majority (84%) of the world’s SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits are not underlain by a discordant footwall feeder zone or vent complex;2. 63.6% of deposits occur in Proterozoic strata followed by a second peak in the Devonian (16.8%). Of those in the Proterozoic, 83% of Type 3 deposits occur in the Gondwanaland supercontinent, whereas only 42% of Type 2 and 39% of Type 1 are located in this large paleo-landmass;3. median (Pb+Zn) grades in Types 1 and 2 fall between 9% and 10% with a majority clustering within this range. Type 3 grades, however, range from ~1% to ~20% (Pb+Zn) with a median of 5%; 4. median size of Type 3 deposits is ~33 Mt, whereas Type 1 and 2 median sizes are ~7 Mt and ~8 Mt, respectively.The report concludes with a brief discussion of how an index-level database such as this can be used in conjunction with other, similar databases to reveal interesting and instructive relationships for guiding both research and exploration."

To improve recoveries of Ni, Cu and Co in the Inco flash furnace, a new operating concept was investigated. By adding sufficient coke to form a supernatant coke layer, a reducing barrier would form allowing for improved reduction of descending oxidized sulfide mineral particles formed in the flame. The objective of this investigation was to study the kinetic mechanism and efficiency of the coke layer to produce a sulfur deficient matte. The mechanism and rate of carbon reduction of each of the phases formed in the flash flame, i.e. sulfides and oxysulfides were investigated by means of X-ray visualization tests. Graphite-slag reduction was also conducted for comparison purposes. In the case of slag, poor wettability and the formation of a gas film on the surface of the carbon reductant are often blamed for limiting the reaction surface area that ultimately results in poor reaction kinetics. The X-ray visualization tests confirmed that matte and oxysulfide wet coke better than slag and that the rates of reduction of matte and oxysulfide are faster than that of slag.

"The use of simulation modeling in the primary metals industry (including mining, smelting, and metals processing) is expanding as significant cost-benefits can be realized by companies employing capital intensive processes. The economic scale and complexity of operations found in this industry is well-suited to applications using this ""what-if' computer modeling technique, ranging from proof-of-concept projects to testing facility design or configuration, and determining resource requirements. More recently this technique is being used to support on-going planning and scheduling for operations using the simulation as the engine to derive the best schedule. With increased computer processing capability, deterministic models are now being developed to capture the workings of a production system or conversion process, allowing real-time monitoring and scheduling of these operations. This paper presents a sample of some recent discrete-event simulation modeling applications that demonstrate the capability and benefits of this technique in the primary metals industry. These include the use of simulation to support the long-range planning of underground mining operations; the modeling of a metals supply chain network that employs a multi-modal distribution system; the scheduling of a metals coil finishing process using a deterministic simulation model; and a more detailed description of the use of simulation to model furnace and converter aisle activities within a smelter operation in Northern Canada."

Controlled thermolysis of gold(I) complex, [Au(C13H27COO)(PPh3)], at 180 °C for 5 h under an N2 atmosphere affords the new type of monodispersed spherical gold nanoparticles capped by myristate and a small amount of PPh3 ligands (average diameter 23±1.5 nm), in spite of no use of solvent, reducing agent and stabilizer. Much attention has been paid to the preparation and structure determination of transition metal nanoparticles, because of their widespread use in technological applications.1 In general, the chemical reduction of metal salts and organometallic complexes2 by the use of reducing agent is carried out to prepare gold nanoparticles. In some cases, a large amount of solvent and stabilizers such as surfactants,3 polymers4 and ligands5 are used to prevent agglomeration of particles and control the particle size. For instance, Brust et al. reported a two-phase reduction of AuCl4 - by NaBH4 in the presence of dodecanethiol as stabilizer to prepare gold nanoparticles.6 On the other hand, O?Brien et al. recently reported an one-phase preparation of gold nanoparticles by the reduction of AuCl4 - by NaBH4 in the mixture of tri-n-octylphosphine oxide and octadecylamine which act as both solvent and stabilizer, but this procedure also needs reducing agent.7

The larger Canadian Banks have pursued this offshore business through their multi-national organizations; this reflects both the increasingly international orientation of today's business environment, and to a degree, the competitive advantage of these offshore developments.The current oversupply situation in mineral markets and the increasing maturity of the Developed World Economy reduces the need for new mining projects relative to growth' in GNP. Those that are brought on stream in the future due to their competitive advantage, will continue to be pursued by lenders and equity investors alike. IntroductionProspects facing those who search for mineral wealth were described rather well more than 200 years ago by a Scottish professor of moral philosophy, who also happens to be the father of modern economics.In search for new mines, Adam Smith wrote in The Wealth of Nations, ""there seems to be no certain limits either to the possible success or to the possible disappointment of human industry"".How true that statement remains today, where we are seeing economic cyclical problems compounded by basic fundamental structural change within the mining industry.Despite the enormous advances in earth sciences during the past two centuries, the rewards of mineral exploration still remain uncertain. Even though a promising orebody is found, ultimate profitability may still depend on the vagaries of the marketplace, where large and unanticipated changes in supply, demand and prices can play havoc with the best of calculations.The Canadian mining industry has had its share of disappointment during the past few years, with savage competition, shrinking demand, declining prices, and disappearing profits. But it has also had some share of success, such as at Hernlo, which now seems certain to provide some of the lowest cost gold production in the world"

Homogeneous chemical composition and microstructure are always necessary, but not always attained in practice. As-cast aluminium alloys tend to have a segregation microstructure. Features of the cast structure, which affect subsequent processing or properties, can be altered by the homogenization. The main task of the Department of Nonferrous Metallurgy was to investigate the effect of homogenization treatment on precipitation hardening of aluminium alloys 6061 and 6082. The effect of the solution heat treatment (SHT) temperature on the mechanical properties was also analyzed. The homogenized and non-homogenized rolling slabs were produced according to the usual conditions and methods. The metallographic investigations were carried out on the as-cast samples, after homogenization, after the hot and the cold rolling mill, and after natural and artificial ageing. Then, Brinell hardness measurements and tensile tests were conducted on both alloys in order to examine the influence of the homogenization.

Surface wave imaging is a relatively new seismic technique that generates subsurface depth images without having to drill boreholes into the ground, and is rapidly becoming a standard tool in non-destructive geotechnical characterization. This paper presents a case study of the application of these surface wave techniques to image shallow abandoned mine workings at the Montague Gold Mines district near Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. This district has numerous steeply dipping narrow vein workings from historical mining activity, and has actively subsiding and collapsing crown pillars. Due to the rugged conditions at the site and the relative narrowness of the openings (often less than 1 m), a surface seismic system was developed that had improved portability and lateral resolution over other available seismic imaging systems. Seismic surveys were conducted over two sites where independent evidence indicated the presence of shallow mine workings. At one site, a comparative gravity survey was also conducted. The seismic data was processed to generate velocity vs depth images. Overall, the velocity images show vertical zones of zero velocity in the same lateral positions where historical mapping, current subsidence and gravity surveys indicate the presence of steeply dipping workings. Further, the velocity sections are consistent with the thickness of the till cover at each site and the possible weakening of crown pillars at one of the sites.
