The slag in iron ore pellets allows wet sintering during firing and leads to suitable bounding. The process of slag formation differs whether it takes place in the core or in the external zone of a pellet. In the core, hematite can be reduced to secondary hematite, depending on the temperature and on the carbon monoxide/dioxide partial pressure ratio. The reaction rim that appears at the outskirts of a silica particle in contact with the FeO bearing magnetite is considered as the slag precursor in the core of the pellet. By contrast, in the external zone of a pellet, where O2 is available and CO partial pressure is very low, the first step towards slag formation is flux decomposition, mainly dolomite and limestone. The CaO liberated through this reaction will be available to react with hematite by solid diffusion to form calcioferrites, which play an active part in the slag evolution process. These two slag formation paths will be explained.

"In an earlier paper(1) the visits to several European mines using the bucket-wheel excavator (BWE) technology were described. It was during this trip that information was gathered on some interesting developments related to this type of mining, taking place elsewhere. It was learned that an across-the-pit system (XPS) comprised of a BWE and stacker has been operating successfully in a Hungarian mine for some time. Also the use of stackers with 225 m long booms and draglines with 125 m booms and 125m3 buckets in Soviet mines was indicated. Such equipment could be of great value to some Canadian strip mines, in particular the equipment proven useful in severe climatic conditions of U.S.S.R., similar to those of the Canadian prairies.To follow up on this information a field trip to Hungary and the U.S.S.R. was organized by the Department of Mineral Engineering, University of Alberta, to study the applications and performance of the systems in question. Visited were the Thorez mine near Visonta, Hungary, U.S.S.R. Ministry of Coal Mining and Skotchinski Institute in Moscow, Karagandashakhstoi Institute (designers of Ekibastuz mines in the Kazakh Republic) and Kostenko mine in Karaganda, Vostsibgiproshakht Institute (designers of Irsha Borodinski, Kharanovski, Moguntski and Tugnuski mines in Siberia) and the eastern Siberian Unit of the U.S.S.R. Coal Mining Ministry in Irkutsk as well as Azeiski mine located some 250 km northwest of Irkutsk. The findings of this field trip are presented."

Introduction The Hollinger cyanidation mill commenced operating in June, 1912, and 49,779,978 tons of solids had been discarded by the end of 1950. The present tailing disposal plant has been in operation since 1924 and holds 39,762,250 tons. The tailing disposal plant is on the property of Kayorum Gold Mines, Limited, about a mile and a quarter south of the mill. The area available for tailing covers 640 acres and is roughly l ¼ miles long by ¾ mile wide. Tailing was first deposited on the McKay veteran claims, l mile long by 1/2 mile wide, which were later included in the Kayorum property. This site sloped from northeast to southwest, the slope amounting to 106 feet between the northeast corner and the low land to the southwest. The low land was wet and a considerable area was covered with muskeg up to 17 feet deep. It was drained by a brook running across the property in a southwesterly direction. Later, when more ground was needed, the low-lying mining claims adjacent to the south and west boundaries were acquired to allow for the extension of the plant. This entailed some extra difficulties and expense that would not have been encountered had the whole of the present site been acquired with the original purchase. At the present time, the top of the tailing deposit stands at two elevations, but eventually the tailing deposited on the extension to the original plant will be raised to the same height as the older deposit. Previous to 1924, all of the tailing was deposited on Low land and in lakes near the mil1. Between 1924 and 1926 an increasing tonnage was sent to the McKay claims until, in 1926, all of it was being sent there. In 1936, the area of the deposit was extended and shortly afterwards all of the tailing was deposited on the new site.

The purpose of an undercut is to undermine a block of ore which will then proceed to cave into draw holes just below the undercut. Undercut-ting is the final and most vital phase in the development of an ore block. Since its purpose is to undermine and induce caving into a block of ore, great care must be exercised to avoid premature caving by removing only enough rock to permit undercut development to proceed. Several undercutting methods, used over a twenty-year period, are re-viewed and their suitability is com-pared with ideal requirements.

At South Deep Gold Mine longhole stopes are backfilled using a cemented Cyclone Classified Tailings in its hydraulic state. The need to contain the hydraulic fill until cured requires a barricade. Due to the massive size of the stopes, the tailings can exert enormous forces on any such barricade. Barricades have long been in use, but recent failures in Australia and the large rate of filling required at South Deep solicited a robust design. A robust design must examine all foreseeable failures and the barricade must be able to resist all expected and, within limits, unexpected loads. The design should also be simple to construct and cost effective, limiting the impact of construction errors and unnecessary delays to production.

Abstract -The Molopo Farms Complex is a major, layered ultramafic/mafic, early Proterozoic intrusion which is totally covered by sediments of the Karoo and Kalahari Formations and situated in southern Botswana and northeastern South Africa. The approximately 3000 m thick, generally fine- to medium-grained ultramafic and mafic cumulates are intrusive into equivalents of Transvaal Supergroup sediments and lavas. Multiphase deformation resulted in tilting and segmentation of the Complex into individual tectonic blocks. Sr isotopes document at least two chemically distinct parental liquids which interacted in a complex manner to form an approximately 1000 m thick rhythmically layered succession which straddles the ultramafic/mafic boundary. Repeated mixing resulted in a complex cryptic layering pattern and numerous sulfide-enriched layers which contain significant PGE +Au concentrations.

The process of gold recovery by gravity concentration is incorporated in the metal recovery flowsheet at seven Newmont Mining Corporation owned mining operations in Australia, North America and Africa. In 2009 gold recovered by gravity processing was equivalent to nine percent of Newmont's total gold sales of 5.3 million ounces. This paper will discuss these applications in detail including a review of plant flowsheets and presentation of recent operating results. Operating performance will be discussed with reference to ore characterisation procedures, interpretation of results, design considerations and optimisation practices as they relate to the recovery of gold by gravity concentration.

"Hecla Limited’s No. 4 Shaft at the Lucky Friday Mine is the largest capital expenditure in the corporation’s 128-year history and is considered the deepest shaft in the United States. This paper will discuss the project’s history and lessons learned from the initial conceptual design work in 2007 through project commissioning in 2017. Change management was key for the owner, contractors, and vendors in delivering the operational and organizational success on the project. The No. 4 Shaft has extended the life of the Lucky Friday Mine by 21 years to 2039. INTRODUCTION The Lucky Friday Mine of Hecla Mining Company (Figure 1) is the oldest active (77 years) and deepest mine in the Coeur d’Alene mining district, producing approximately 725 tonnes (800 tons) per day from narrow, vertical, silver, lead, and zinc veins. Primary access into the mine is via the Silver Shaft, a 5.5-m (18-ft) diameter, concrete lined shaft sunk to an original depth of 1,890-m (6,200-ft). Current production is from the Gold Hunter vein system, approximately 1,525-m (5,000-ft) northwest of the Silver Shaft.Cut and fill stoping is currently employed at depths to 2.3 km (7,500 ft) below ground surface, making it one of the deepest mines in the western hemisphere. No. 4 Shaft is a 5.5-metre (18-foot) diameter, concrete lined circular shaft, constructed as a 1.2 km (3,860 feet) deep winze in the Lucky Friday Mine. The 2.4 m (8 ft.) diameter, double drum, double clutch, Siemag hoist and associated headworks are situated at the 4760 level, top station at 4940 and shaft stations at 5900, 6500, 6580, 7500, 7580, 8300, 8380, 8500, and 8620. Shaft stations reference depth below Silver Shaft top station. The 4 Shaft was designed, constructed and commissioned over ten years, between 2007 and 2017. Basic design work was completed by Nordmin Engineering, followed by detailed design completed by Cementation Canada. Shaft construction was awarded to Cementation USA and lateral development was initiated in early 2008. Over the course of the next nine years, the project was suspended and restarted twice, dealt with the loss of a miner, added scope including shaft depth and mine infrastructure facilities, experienced squeezing ground that required liner replacement, changed excavation section, and dealt with a final alignment that was not within design requirement for verticality. Hecla and Cementation were successful in delivering a facility that provides fully functional access from collar at 4940 level to shaft bottom at the 8620 level. Two active mining levels below the collar, 5900 and 6500 are accessed. In addition, the shaft provides access to the future mining level at 7500, skip loading facility at 7580 level, station and loading pocket cutouts at 8300 and 8380 levels, spill pocket at 8500 level, and shaft bottom pumping facility at 8620 level (Figure 2)."

THE Wellington Lake power plant of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, about 25 miles from Goldfields, Saskatchewan, is the second hydro-electric project operating in that Province, the first being the Island Falls plant of the Churchill River Power Company which serves the operations of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company at Flin Flon, Manitoba. The Churchill River project develops 90,000 h.p. at 56-ft. head; the Wellington Lake plant 3,300 h.p. at 75-ft. with pro-vision for an additional 3,300 h.p. unit. Churchill River power is trans-mitted at 110,000 volts over a 58-mile line of steel towers to Flin Flon and an additional 45 miles over a wooden pole-line to Sherritt-Gordon. Our steel tower-line is 22 miles long, and the voltage is 60,000; this choice be-cause certain such equipment was available from Trail. The diversion of 15,000? second-feet at 56-ft. head for 90,000 h. p. at Churchill river dwarfs our 500 second-feet flow at 75-ft. head for 3,300 h.p. In both cases, the main obstacles to be overcome during plant construction were the lack of transport facilities and the short open season. Let it be noted here that this paper deals mainly with those phases of plant construction which were particularly interesting to the writer. With-out these variations from the ordinary routine, this is just another power project whose story is better told by the accompanying charts and pictures. To many members of the Institute it is still just that; but I am writing for those who, like myself, have been too seldom responsible for major under-rakings at an appreciable distance from a railway siding. When it was planned in early 1937 to erect a 1,000-ton mill at our Box mine, both hydro and Diesel power were discussed. With ten years' ore in sight, even an expensive hydro project, such as ours turned out to be, produces kilowatts materially below the 2-cent operating cost of a Diesel plant using fuel-oil at 14 cents a gallon.

The presence of high noise levels in many industries, together with the fact that countries are becoming increasingly concerned with the health of its citizens, has contributed to the importance of the problem of hearing loss. This problem has become the focus of scientific research, law and medicine, and the object of this thesis is to present the means whereby noise may be detected, with its resulting effects and possible means of control, in mining operations. 0BJECTIONABLE noise is a particularly prevalent by-product of the mining industry, and, al-though a dangerous noise level has been recognized, it is believed that at no time now, or in the future, will it be possible to enumerate a single over-all decibel figure at which hearing impairment will oc-cur. Individual susceptibility must be recognized in any study of occupational loss of hearing aimed at the setting of standards and criteria for industrial noise control.

It details the crushing, autogenous grinding, flotation and spray drying circuits for the production of a nickel concentrate. Introduction There are times when meditation on the past is worth while. Too often does it happen that in the busy routine there appears t9 be little time for reflection, and little good or benefit to be derived from what has already taken place, or what has become past achievement. Under conditions such as those that prevail at present, consideration is being given to many subjects that a few years ago were not looked upon as worthy of time or thought. The temporary lull in industrial development is permitting of a stock-taking investigation, a perusal of past activities, and a planning for future development with the return to normality. It is not proposed to include much new data in this address, but the endeavour will be made to survey, in resume, the sequence of events which led up to the birth of the mining industry in Canada, and to show how, as new discoveries were made, the centres of interest changed from time to time until mineral development extended across Canada from the Atlantic to the Pacific. It will appear, also, that external causes have accentuated mineral development at one time and retarded it at another. Early Records A, historical background to the mining industry extends even to an earlier date than the discovery by white men of that part of the continent of North America represented by Canada. It has been stated that the aborigines were still in the neolithic stage when the white man arrived. One metal only was known to the natives, and that was copper, obtained from possibly many parts of Canada, but particularly from the shores of lake Superior in Ontario, from the Coppermine river on the Arctic coast, and from die coastal regions of British Columbia.

This short paper deals with the subject of research and its relation to productivity. All who have stopped to even think about industrial re-search and its impact on the nation-al economy take for granted that research and development are pre-requisite to increased productivity. It is another matter, however, to identify and properly evaluate the many factors entering into the relationship between the two. Some studies are currently underway in the United States on the subject, but, so far, nothing much in the way of conclusive data has come to light. In Canada, we have not yet even produced any statistical figures on national productivity, although work is now being done on this subject and information will soon be available. The usefulness of being able to measure the benefits of investment in re-search and development in terms of industrial growth or productivity need not be laboured for the benefit of those interested in research management.

In this paper, a new approach that uses hot-top DC casting process to producing multi-alloy ingots is present. The different type and size of composite and coated ingots (4045/3004/4045 three-layer composite ingots with section 630mm by 1500mm and 4045/3003 coasted ingot with F140mm/F110mm in diameter) are cast by this approach. The macro-morphologies and microstructures of the composite ingots, the temperature distribution and the element distribution in the interface zone were investigated, also and the interface bonding strength was measured. Results show that the solid supporting layer formed on the cooling plates plays a key role in the casting process of composite ingots. The solid supporting layer can prevent the blending of two melts by resisting the impact of alloy melt, which ensures the stable casting process and casting high quality composite ingots, because the contact height is increased using hot-top DC casting. In addition, fabrication and properties of 4045/3004/4045 three-layer composite ingots with section 630mm by 1500mm are reported in detail.

Recent advances in underground communications technology have demonstrated the feasibility of teleoperation and automation in underground metal mines. One major challenge lies in the automation of underground mobile machines from surface, with the potential to reduce significantly the need for human involvement in underground operations. This paper reviews the evolution of underground metal mining automation, principally related to the development of teleoperation and automation of mobile mining machines. Examples of prototype systems are given and the associated benefits that have been observed are reviewed.

THE Hamilton Works of The Steel Company of Canada is a fully integrated steel plant with an annual capacity of three million tons. Located on the south shore of -Hamilton bay, it is in the centre of Hamilton's industrial belt. The heavy concentration of industrial activities found in this area, accompanied metallurgical well-known sources of pollution which are normal to urban areas is creating a pollution problem which concerns both industry and the general public. The Steel Company of Canada has recognized this problem and, accordingly, has adopted the policy of integrating suitable pollution control devices into its new installations. Much effort is also being expended to control the emissions of air contaminants from the existing equipment. At the Hamilton Works, there are two main sources of metallurgical dust emissions to the atmosphere -the Open Hearth furnaces and the Sinter Plant. "The paper describes a new method of interpreting the “canister test” data for the quantitative estimation of gas-kinetic parameters of coal bed based on the developed model of gas emission from coal sample placed in a sealed container. The model accounts for grain-size composition of the sample, initial gas content S, as well as coefficients of diffusion D and mass transfer ?. The inverse coefficient problem is formulated to find S, D and ??from the data of pressure measurements in the sealed container. It is shown that the inverse problem is uniquely solvable if the pressure is dropped during the experiment. The method has been tested using the data from an underground coal mine in the Kuznetsk Basin.Based on the poroelastic model of a coal bed and Khristianovich’s concept about origination and evolution of the filtration zone F in the neighborhood of a degassing borehole the authors considered the corresponding direct problem on rock mass geomechanical state. It was offered interpretation method for data on pressure measurements in a plugged degassing borehole allows evaluation of the diffusion coefficient, the horizontal component of natural stress field and parameters of F. The related inverse problem of the mixed type is formulated, and the cost function is constructed. The analysis using synthetic input data has shown that the cost function has a number of local minimums arranged on the same straight line, one of the minimums being the inverse problem solution. INTRODUCTIONPre-mine degassing is an integral part of coal mining. It allows mitigation of induced accidents in mines (coal and gas outbursts, rock bursts) (Guide, 1990; Malyshev & Airuni, 1999; Seidle, 2011) and also furnishes an alternative and ecology-friendly energy source—methane (Rice, 1997; Nambo, 2001). Choosing an optimized pattern of degassing boreholes, as well as estimating degassing time and amount of gas recovered requires data on gas-kinetics indices of coal beds out of which the key parameter is a gas content S. According to the latest guidelines for coal mines in Russia (Ruban et al, 2012), mining is allowed if S in a coal bed section is under 7 kg/m3."

"International competition is presenting the Canadian steel industry with a major challenge. While Canadian companies have invested in new technology, research and development, activity by Canadian industry, in general, lags significantly behind that of its major competitors. While OECD countries increased their research and development spending during the 1980s, Canada's R&D funding levels have changed little since the early 1970s and have actually dropped since 1986, despite greater public discussion on the issue. This fact is reflected in the relatively slower pace of innovation in the Canadian steel industry, despite the efforts of both government and industry.In addition, there are a number of factors that undermine the competitiveness of the Canadian steel industry, in particular in relation to the United States. Among these are higher interest rates, labour costs and tax rates, as well as an overvalued Canadian dollar. Canadian steel companies are thus feeling the full impact of the current economic recession. This recession, combined with recent strikes, have, for example, caused serious losses for Algoma and Stelco.In spite of these objective difficulties, the Canadian steel industry has been able to survive and continues to strive for a leadership position in the world market. Since World War II, heavy investment in new technology has allowed the industry to upgrade its facilities and increase productivity, while at the same time improving quality and reducing pollution. This last point is particularly important in view of public insistence on improvements to the quality of the environment. Over the next decade, this technological innovation must be maintained and intensified if industry is to meet the challenge of international competition and attain a leadership position."

The lignite deposit at Onakawana on the Abitibi river is of particular interest at the present time, since the Ontario Government has recently decided to proceed with the extension of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway to James bay. Forty-five miles of steel will be laid this year to the crossing of the Moose river. This will cross the lignite field. It has been known for many years that lignite occurred in the Moose River basin, but it was not until drilling was commenced at Blacksmith rapids (or Onakawana, as the camp is now known) in June, 1929, that a seam of economic thickness and extent was found. Early in 1929 the Ontario Legislature voted $25,000 for the carrying out of a drilling programme in the Moose River basin. This came as a culmination of two summers' exploratory work by the Geological Branch of the Ontario Department of Mines, and as the result of a report which said; in effect, that further information concerning the mineral resources of the basin could only be obtained by drilling, and that such a drilling programme was well worth while in order to establish once for all whether lignite, fire-clay, or oil or gas did or did not exist in economic quantities in the region.
