The Cosmo Project falls within the Archaean to Palaeo-Proterozoic Pine Creek Orogen, one of the major mineral provinces of Australia.The Cosmo Deposit is interpreted to be a series of steep north-west-plunging gold mineralised vein, breccia and shear systems within the tight Howley Anticline and hosted within interbedded siltstones, mudstones, banded iron, phyllites, dolerite sills and greywacke.A folded environment poses a number of technical challenges, particularly for estimation.Handling of tightly folded and in some cases narrow domains might include subdomaining for orientation, omni-directional three-dimensional (3D) estimation within constrained domains or software-enabled unfolding/un-wrinkling procedures (transformation of the data and estimate space into a two-dimensional environment). Each technique has its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages.A further method (one applied at Cosmo) is where the estimation parameters (specifically search and variography orientation) are modified in a frequent or ‘dynamic’ sense to suit the orientation of the domain whilst maintaining 3D space. Control of the resource estimation orientation can be done in several ways, including the use of sectional panels of a specific size or, alternatively, orientation sector divisions. The sector approach provides some significant reductions in processing time over the panel technique and could be applied in a number of software packages.Three-dimensional ‘dynamic’ interpolation reconciles well with production data from Cosmo, whilst the sector method provides a practical technique that can be executed without the complications of transformation or the need for labour-intensive orientation subdomaining and with acceptable resource estimation run time.CITATION:Finch, A and Pridmore, C, 2014. The production of approximately 550 000 tonnes of æwhiteÆ or chrysotile asbestos fibre between 1972 and 1983 at the Woodsreef Mine in New South Wales left behind 24 million tonnes of tailings and 75 million tonnes of waste rock and overburden. The Woodsreef Magnesium Project is designed to extract the 23 per cent magnesium content of the tailings to produce magnesium metal and magnesium alloys, the latter with aluminium from the New South Wales smelters. Further value will be added to the tailings waste with the downstream production of magnesium alloy sheets and cast products for the transportation, electronics and other consumer goods industries. The mine opened in 1918 and closed in 1983 becoming derelict. There has been minimal expenditure on rehabilitation compared with that recommended in reports commissioned by the New South Wales Government. The tailings dump has been designated æasbestos wasteÆ by the EPA and will be eliminated through the magnesium refinery process of the Project with the dissolution of the remaining chrysotile fibres. The benign waste from the refinery process will consist principally of silica with some iron. Significant energy savings are expected from innovative new processing technology, in the alloy formation and in the application of the light weight, cast and sheet metal products, particularly in the transportation industries. Globally, there are very large resources of similar tailings with hundreds of years of useful productive lives that could be converted into the metal of the 21st Century, magnesium, and its alloys, to assist pollution and greenhouse gas reduction from transportation industries. No new mining and minimal feedstock preparation is required. Unlike potential producers using carbonate rocks such as magnesite and dolomite that have to be mined, the asbestos tailings composed principally of non-fibrous serpentinite do not contain any carbon dioxide.

A new classification of subduction related (epithermal- / mesother-mal) gold mineralisation styles based on the tectonic framework they occur in, has been found helpful in practice. It offers a ratio-nalisation of exploration efforts during all stages of work.Methodology on the ground during first pass- and follow up explo-ration which has been found effective for the various mineralisa-tion styles is being briefly outlined.

HPGR technology has been used at a number of magnetite mines in the world and have significant energy advantages over SAG and AG technologies. The early design at Los Colorados in Chile has been in operation for more than 12 years - and operates very successfully though only reduces the feed size to -5mmThe Whyalla project magnet design pushed the concept to produce a preconcentrate of 80%-350micron - a significant reduction on previous plants though with some wear problems in the early years. The Karara design backpedalled slightly and will only crush to 80%-1.8mm.However, the design issues of using a HPGR to further reduce the feed size continue to be explored. The aim is to reduce the process risks associated with wear and also to reduce the complexity of the downstream process - with consequent benefits in terms of capital and operating costs.The designs are being developed for a couple of projects - one planned to produce 20Mtpa of concentrate with the potential to not only remove SAG and AG milling but also ball milling. The concept is to use multiple passing through the HPGR since, on the data available, the efficiency of the HPGR to reduce size does not significantly diminish as the feed size is reduce. Good morning. I am very pleased to be invited to present the Opening Address to this inaugural New Zealand Minerals & Mining Conference. It is indeed a pleasure to see so many representatives of this industry, which is so important to New Zealand's economy, present here today.   I extend a warm welcome to all delegates, particularly those from outside New Zealand. To those of you who have travelled from offshore, please closely observe our industry, and do not hesitate to ask Crown Minerals staff here for any further information you may want. I trust you will soon come to the same conclusion that my two following speakers have; that New Zealand is a good investment destination, and further that many of you will decide to invest in New Zealand's minerals and mining industry.   In New Zealand the minerals industry - minerals, coal and petroleum - together constitute an approximate $2.5 billion per year business. In broad terms this is about 3% of our Gross Domestic Product.

In June 1996, Nord Resources Pacific (Nord) decided to work towards obtaining all necessary approvals from the government of PNG for a mine on Simberi Island in the Tabar Island Group, New Ireland Province. On the 9th of September 1996, Nord submitted a Proposal for Development and an application for a Mining Lease to mine the oxide gold deposits on Simberi Island. The Mining Lease was granted on the 3rd of December 1996 in a signing ceremony on Simberi Island. This was achieved in the extremely short time frame of less than 3 months and this paper attempts to explain the processes which made it possible.

Commercial production of zinc started at the Pasminco Metals - EZ Plant, Hobart, Tasmania, in 1921. Since that time the capacity of the plant has been steadily increased to its present level of almost 220 000 tpa. Major areas of the plant have been successively upgraded over a number of years, (Roasters, 1969, 1975; Acid Plants, 1981; Casting, 1972; Residue Treatment Plant, 1971), but, until recently, the leach/purification area remained virtually unchanged from the time the plant was built. The major redevelopment of the hydrometallurgical plant began with fully integrated pilot plant testing of the proposed new circuit in 1981. The pilot plant incorporated the Low-contaminant Jarosite Process, and a new two-stage zinc dust purification procedure. In 1985, approval was granted for a major modemisation program which involved the complete replacement of most of the leaching and purification plants, and substantial improvements to the residue treatment plant. Construction of the first of the new plant sections, Strong Acid Leaching, commenced in 1986. This paper describes briefly the modernisation program itself, and the current method of zinc production at the PMEZ plant. The new plant sections comprise a Strong Acid Leach stage to improve lead residue grade; a Preneutralisation stage to reduce metal losses in jarosite; new filtration stages for both jarosite and lead residue; new Neutral Leach and Weak Acid Leach stages to replace old equipment; a new Solution Purification stage to replace the use of organic reagents to remove cobalt; and a new Gypsum Removal stage to cool the solution before electrolysis. At the completion of the modernisation program, only the electrolytic cellhouse remains of the early plant sections.

The carbon-in-pulp (CIp)process has become well accepted and firmly established in the gold industry of South Africa and, at this stage, six large CIP plants are treating close to I million metric tons of material per month. Many small operators are also using CIP and additional large plants are either nearing completion, are on the drawing boards,. or are being considered. The programme of testwork that preceded the acceptance of the CIP process in South Africa was conducted over some eight years and has been previously described'-7. With the start-up of the President Brand CIP plant on 'calcine' in July 1980 and that of the Western Areas CIP plant on repulped filter residues in September 1980, the emphasis on the CIP process switched from pilot plants to these large plants - and has largely remained there. As it has started up, each new CIP plant benefited from the experience gained and the developments made, on earlier plants but, since so few plants have so far been established in South Africa, each new plant and each new design has revealed a further set of conditions to be met and problems to be overcome. However, in the highly collaborative atmosphere of the South African gold-mining industry, the results and observations from the operation of these first plants were shared by all mining groups. This paper will attempt to describe typical developments on, and results obtained from, these new large plants, and will incorporate significant results from the earlier laboratory and pilot-plant investigations.,

Closure options under consideration at some sites include backfilling mined-out pits with waste rock. Backfill may include mineralised and non-mineralised waste rock. Following groundwater rebound, flow-through conditions may develop in the pit post-closure. The backfill located in the saturated zone below the water table may release solutes under such conditions. It is therefore important to understand the potential impacts that backfilled pits could have on postclosure groundwater quality.Geochemical characterisation programs are the foundation for assessing the potential chemistry of water that has contacted mined wastes. Such programs must be designed to obtain data relevant to the closure options under consideration. To complement standard testing techniques, SRK utilises saturated column testing designed to generate data on leaching rates under anoxic conditions that could be encountered within submerged backfill.This paper presents the findings of saturated column test work carried out on waste rock samples from an iron ore mine in the Pilbara.CITATION:Watson, A, Linklater, C and Chapman, J, 2016. The Hydrogeological Survay of the bauxite mines in Hungary was establisned 30 years ago. The goal of the HS has been to collect the all available date needed to solve the hydrogeological problems of bauxite mines. The results of activity of the HS have been summarized in the annual reports-. This report is going to present a few methods to evaluate the hydrogeological properties of fissured, karstic rock ie. the evaluation of drilling mud losses, the statistics of core samples evaluated by a special computer program for calculation the porosity and permeability of the rocks. An experimental injection test is presented together with the development of a new portable instrument to get signes of the water table change during the injection test in every two second. It can be proved that the flow around the well may be a transient one if the yield of the injection exceeds a definite one (Figure 2.). It was observed that the permeability calculated from the pumping test date may be 1.2-1.6 time higher than it coming from the injection test. A practical example is presented also how to use the results of the HS for designing the dewatering of a new mine together with an analogous computer model to forecast the yield expectable for making the drift tunnel. A suggestion based on the hydrogeological feature has been done for the dewatering without using electric energy (see Figure 3.-6.).

Technological development is accelerating in the mining industry (Abrahamsson and Johansson, 2021) and in large parts of the world there is an increased environmental awareness (United Nations, 2015). This can mean both challenges and opportunities. The mining industry has long been criticized for its adverse environmental effects. However, there is now a lively discourse about the role of mining in facilitating the green transition towards sustainable development. Mining is increasingly recognised as a prerequisite for the green transition, by supplying key raw materials to enable, for example, digitisation and batteries for electric vehicles. The green transition not only amplifies the demand for metals and minerals but also intensifies pressure on the mining sector to assume greater responsibility for environmental and societal welfare (Dehaine et al, 2020). New technology, such as digitisation, automation, and remote control, play a crucial role in advancing towards more sustainable mining practices. Despite the expanding role of advanced technology, human involvement will remain important in the extraction process (Rogers et al, 2019), but new technology will change how miners do their work, which in turn will lead to changed competence requirements for miners (Herbert and Hidalgo, 2021) and increased need for further education. Given the significant shift towards sustainable mining, it is important to study how these changes may affect the work, competences, further education and skills of miners as human expertise will continue to be critical in the extraction process. Consequently, there is a need for proactive research to prepare for the inevitable changes and implement measures to support miners through this changeable period to ensure a smooth transition that protects miners’ safety and working environment. This extended abstract explores how new technology will affect the need for further education of miners in the future.

Remote sensing has been used for many years but until recently its application has been limited by the resolution of the data available. High resolution airborne multi-spectral scanner data (MSS) has proven suitable for a number of applications including environmental management and monitoring. A shallow water mapping research. project completed on the Gold Coast has shown that- remote sensing can be used as a cost effective tool for environmental management and Monitoring.

Water is an integral and essential part of mining business. Two issues crucial in the management of this resource, scarcity and excess, are increasing awareness of the importance of water and changing the value perceptions of the industry because they affect both the existence and continuation of the business. Therefore its value should be reflected in the water management that is practised on site. Historically water in mining has been perceived to be of low value so management practices have not been good or well implemented. Political and social transformation in South Africa has been accompanied by the promulgation of new legislation. South African water law is now underpinned by Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) principles. It impacts water pricing, provides for water pollution charges, prioritises water users, has specific mining and water related components and requires water licensing as part of the licence to mine. Mining no longer has a priority on water resources and has to compete with other water users to gain access to resources. New institutional arrangements are being put in place to implement the regulations. All this requires a paradigm shift in miningÆs view of water. Generally the sector is still catching up with the new requirements, principles and philosophies. However, the way in which South African mining values water is changing. This is demonstrated in partnerships between the industry and other water users. These partnerships are Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) in practice and they achieve sustainable development goals. These partnerships are essential for mining to stay in business, expand operational capacity, reduce impacts, prevent legal action and reduce reputational risks.

"The Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group (GMSG) currently supports nine individual industry working groups focused on developing standards and guidelines for the mining industry. In 2013 the GMSG established the Industrial Comminution Efficiency (ICE) working group to develop freely available guidelines for plant operators to quantify the operating efficiency of industrial comminution circuits. This initiative has engaged a diverse group of representatives from mining companies, equipment vendors, consultants and metallurgical laboratories with vast experience and capabilities in the field of comminution. The GMSG has issued the first two guidelines from the ICE working group in 2015–2016, with the third guideline having completed the approvals process and being in the final stages of editing ahead of release later in 2016.Two of the ICE guidelines present methods to quantify comminution circuit efficiency, and a complementary guideline describes best practice methods to collect the necessary samples and data to furnish these assessments. Collectively the guidelines cover sampling, survey data collection, laboratory testing procedures and calculation processes to allow the user to generate a relative circuit efficiency factor for the comminution circuit at the time of survey. The reference energy consumption is calculated considering the measured F80, P80 and ore strength at the time of survey, using either or both of the Bond or Morrell methods presented in GMSG guidelines dedicated to each method. The guidelines consequently provide the end user with practical tools to perform circuit efficiency analysis and to readily quantify the impact of optimisation efforts.This paper presents the content of the three ICE guidelines and describes their intended application.Citation:Giblett, A and Daniel, M, 2016. The increasing problems associated with the disposal of waste and the potential for use of by-products as underground filling material is a subject which is relevant not only to the coal-mining industry. The progressive scarcity of surface disposal facilities for by-products and waste has now become a problem in all sectors - not only for the mining industry. The considerable capacity offered by underground cavities which exists in various mining branches present an extremely promising potential in this context. The backfill process for coal mining developed by DMT in co-operation with Ruhrkohle AG make use of the cavities which are offered by the extraction of coal. It consists of several stages: The fine-grained by-products, such as sludge, filter cakes, fine refuse, ash and flue-gas cleaning residues are processed on the basis of specified formulations in metering, blending and pump facilities on the surface to produce pumpable pastes with precisely defined flow characteristics. On Walsum Colliery of Ruhrkohle AG up to 200 m3/h stowing paste is conveyed into the mine in pipes with diameter of 200 mm (8"). The delivery pressure of the pump operating on surface in conjunction with the hydrostatic pressure of the shaft pipe - amounting in total to as much as 25 MPa - makes it possible to convey the stowing material for a distance 12000 m underground up to the workings without any need for additional booster pumps. Via a pipe installed in the face, the paste is pressurised into the cavities in the specially fragmented rock in the mined-out zone well behind the support. Consistent use of stowage of caved-in goafs makes it possible to reduce surface settlement above the workings. Fires in the stowed rock are either smothered or completely prevented thanks to the exceptional air-tightness in the caved goaf and the cooling effects of the slurry stowage. The reduced danger of fire, the preventation of air-leakage and the positive effects on gas emission from the coal improve safety in the workings.

Resource rent tax is a form of taxation or royalty, which only become effective at such a time as a pre-determined rate of return has been achieved by an operation. The offshore petroleum industry in Australia is already subject to RRT as is the Roxby Downs (Olympic Dam) Mine in South Australia. Both the mining and petroleum taxation regimes in Papua New Guinea include a resource rent tax component called Additional Profits Tax (APT). The implications of the current form of Additional Profits Tax for shareholder cash returns are that the tax burden on the operation may suddenly increase at some stage in the life of the mine, if and when the threshold level of profitability for the tax to be triggered is exceeded. From that point in time onwards the cash return to the shareholders on the capital invested is greatly diminished. For mining companies in Papua New Guinea, the effective tax rate increases from 35% to 57.75% as a result of the onset of Additional Profits Tax. This tax rate penalty is so severe that there appears to be merit in considering the concept of managing profitability through time rather than purely maximising annual pre-tax profits as is currently the case in most mining operations. This would have the benefit of deferring or perhaps preventing altogether the onset of the tax. One possible method for the effective management of profitability is through the control of average mining grade by cutoff grade manipulation. Traditional cutoff grade theory has usually considered taxation as a direct cost at a fixed or variable percentage of annual profits. As a result of this most analyses are conducted on a pre-tax basis. If tax is included in analyses it is usually present as a time independent function of gross profit. Additional Profits Tax is both time and rate of return dependent and therefore not adequately accommodated by currently accepted cutoff grade theory. A review has been made of the effects of resource rent taxes on both the investment decision-making process as well as possible development and mining strategies which may be employed by mining companies faced with Additional Profits Tax. The review includes examples based on the structure of Additional Profits Tax which is levied in Papua New Guinea.

1991 saw the completion of a three-year $1.1 million research and development program in mineral sands beneficiation, funded in two associated projects by the Australian mineral sands industry through AMIRA, and carried out by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre. It is believed to be the largest R&D project in mineral sands ever conducted by a university research group. It covered dry plant operation, and delivered several products to the industrial sponsors, including: ò A detailed characterisation of the radiation properties, mineralogy and size distribution of inhaleable dust arising in dry plants. ò New process models of magnetic and electrostatic separators. ò New on-line instruments for elemental assay (in association with AMDEL) and bulk conductivity measurements of dry process streams. ò Demonstration and evaluation of the Magstream magnetohydrostatic separation technology.

The future challenges in mining instrumentation, mainly on future intelligent mines, are to continue providing instruments with the highest level of reliability at the lowest possible cost, and also to take advantage of technology existing in other industries and to adapt it to the mining context. New wireless instruments (smart sensors, smart actuators, smart controllers) would also be very useful, as well as instruments fully adapted to the monitoring of large movements that are observed, in both underground and open pit mines. Mining instrumentation is found to various degrees in most mines, both open pit and underground. Smart mining instruments present a certain number of aspects specific to the environment in which the instruments are installed. Namely, the instruments can be installed either for short-term or long-term purposes. The mining industry is always looking for useful instruments that can provide relevant information on ground behaviour adjacent to mining stopes or permanent infrastructure. The instruments must meet the various criteria, and must also evolve with the new mining technologies that are continuously being implemented. A strong collaboration between the mining industry, research organisations, and instrument manufacturers is the key to meeting these objectives. This contribution describes the current trends on smart sensors and smart instrumentation with Wireless LAN support.
