Cameco Corporation operates the high-grade 140 tpd fly-in/fly-out underground McArthur River Uranium Mine in Northern Saskatchewan in a joint venture with Cogema Resources Inc. Reserve grade is in excess of 20 per cent U3O8 with current mining grade averaging 16 per cent U3O8. Due to the high radiation potential of the ore, the non-entry mining method of raiseboring was chosen to minimise worker radiation exposure potential. The raisebore and extraction horizons are located in waste rock with the orebody located between horizons. Ore produced by raiseboring is delivered by LHD to an underground SAG mill and is then hydraulically hoisted to surface receiving facilities after underground thickening to 50 per cent solids by weight. Concrete backfilling is utilised. The orebodies at McArthur River are adjacent to water bearing sandstone. Ground freezing is therefore employed to isolate the ore from this water bearing ground. Calcium chloride brine at -35¦C is circulated through a series of cased boreholes to establish freeze walls up to 25 metres in thickness. At 18 000 000 lb of low cost U3O8 production per annum, McArthur River ranks as the worldsÆ largest uranium mine. Over 50 per cent of the workforce resides in this sparsely populated area of Canada with approximately 40 per cent being of aboriginal ancestry. Site operations must cater for winter temperatures as low as -50¦C.

The process and control technologies incorporated into the coal preparation plant at Newlands were to be used for the first time in Australia. The commissioning organisation and procedures were set up on the basis that commissioning personnel, while being competent, would be unfamiliar with the equipment. In addition the commissioning process would have to be completed quickly. The organisation coped with all of these problems and more.

Stressed steel cables, similar to those used in pre-stressed concrete, have been used for rock mass reinforcement, in civil engineering, for many years. This type of reinforcement has been attempted for open pit wall support, on several occasions, but has never gained wide acceptance as a practical approach because of high cost and complexity of installation in a mining environment. On the other hand, untensioned, fully grouted cable dowels (cable bolts) have gained wide acceptance for ground support in underground mining and it is perhaps surprising that this technique has not been used to a greater degree in open pit mining. The first systematic application of this technique in Australia was at the Mary Kathleen uranium mine in 1976, where it was spectacularly successful in maintaining steep stable walls in a jointed rock mass with unfavourably dipping structures. Cable bolting, and other techniques, are now being used to an increasing degree for wall support in both small and large open pits, for two basic applications: 1. stabilisation of potentially unstable sections of a wall, or 2. to allow steeper walls and reduce waste stripping volumes. In virtually every situation, wall rein- forcement has significant economic as well as technical advantages. The paper describes the development of the techniques, the mechanisms of wall support, the methods used, and discusses several case histories of its application to Australian open pit mines.

A total of 12 alkalic porphyry centres of Late Ordovician age have been discovered in two mineral districts within NSW. The alkalic porphyry deposits are hosted within shoshonitic volcanic centres that formed where a major cross-arc basement structure (the Lachlan Transverse Zone) cut the Ordovician Macquarie Arc. The Macquarie Arc was amalgamated with the back-arc basin sediments of the Wagga Marginal Basin and with the proto-Pacific margin of Gondwanaland to form the Lachlan Fold Belt after the cessation of arc magmatism in the Late Ordovician. Within the Ordovician volcanic belts of NSW, the alkalic porphyries are the most significant mineral deposits economically. The combined resource of the Cadia district porphyries (729 Mt @ 0.79 g/t Au and 0.30 per cent Cu) makes Cadia the worldÆs seventh largest known porphyry gold system and the largest known gold resource in an alkalic porphyry system (574 t Au). Hydrothermal alteration in the alkalic porphyries comprises a complex sequence of potassic, calc-potassic, sodic, calc-sodic, propylitic and late-stage, typically fault-controlled phyllic assemblages. Hematite dusting is common in many of these alteration assemblages, giving the intrusions and the altered volcano-sedimentary host sequences a distinctive pink-orange colouration. Intensely developed hydrothermal alteration assemblages are localised to within a few hundred metres of the composite intrusions that sourced the mineralising fluids, making these deposits difficult exploration targets. Sulfides are typically zoned, with several of the deposits having bornite-rich cores, chalcopyrite-dominant annuluses and pyritic outer haloes. Gold is well correlated with bornite in most of the deposits, and with chalcopyrite at Cadia Hill.

This extended abstract and associated presentation provide a series of real examples of the complex interactions between the numerous input parameters, both geological and mathematical, that are required for resource estimation. Many of these parameters can contain a large degree of uncertainty at the initial resource stage. The resource tonnages and grades at economic cut offs of some types of deposits are relatively robust to these initial uncertainties while others exhibit significant sensitivity. In some cases, changes in parameters can result in counter-intuitive outcomes. Grades and confidence levels are inseparable; as the parameters change the confidence changes and so does the grade estimate. The extended abstract and associated presentation also discuss the question of whether or not a single solution is still an acceptable outcome for an estimate or if even a set of simulations based on a single fixed set of parameters is acceptable.CITATION: Kentwell, D, 2018. A better understanding of the detonation performance of an explosive charge can be gained by directly measuring pressure, temperature and velocity of detonation (VOD). This is particularly important with explosives used in the mining industry because their performance is directly influenced by the degree of confinement given by the borehole diameter and the surrounding rock mass. A project funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) was initiated in early 2009 with the view to design and build cost-effective prototype instrumentation to measure the relative differences in detonation pressures and temperatures of commercial mining explosives. The project’s primary focus was on low-density explosives. Low-density (also referred to as low shock) explosives have been available in various forms for nearly 20 years. There have been significant advances in the availability, reliability and flexibility of these explosives, which now offer a range of densities and degrees of water resistance. Their detonation performance is not well understood and cannot be accurately predicted with current ideal and non-ideal detonation codes. It was therefore viewed as important to be able to directly measure pressure and temperature during the detonation process of these complex mixtures in production blastholes. Identifying the pressure release patterns of both conventional and low-density explosives under different geotechnical conditions should provide the necessary information to both validate detonation codes and better define input parameters for breakage and fragmentation models. This paper gives a general description of the prototype instrumentation developed and reports on the results obtained to date in full-scale conditions.

The Argyle diamond deposits in the East Kimberley were found as a result of a long term exploration programme, begun in 1972 by the Kalumburu Joint Venture (KJV), to search for diamonds on the Kimberley craton. When CRA Exploration Pty. Limited joined the KJV in 1976, it was re-named the Ashton Joint Venture (AJV). The Kimberley craton was considered prospective by analogy with structural settings of diamondiferous kimberlites in Africa. Diamonds were found during regional drainage sampling in Smoke Creek in late 1979, which led directly to the discovery of the rich Argyle lamproite diatreme (AK1) and associated alluvial deposits of Smoke and Limestone Creeks. The diatreme intruded into quartzites, sandstones and shales of Adelaidean age, and consists predominantly of lapilli ash tuff, with minor coarse and fine ash tuffs, 'non-sandy tuff' and olivine lamproite dykes. Erosion of the diatreme has produced the alluvial deposits of Smoke Creek and Limestone Creek to the north and east. Argyle diamonds are of predominately industrial quality, and the typical diamond is a brown, irregularly shaped, frosted, heavily resorbed form with abundant graphite inclusions, well developed etch channels and prominent hexagonal surface depressions. The pre-feasibility evaluation of AK1 comprised diamond drilling, surface and underground sampling, metallurgical sampling, marketing studies and ore reserve estimation. The proven AK1 ore reserve is 61Mtonne at 6.8ct/tonne. Evaluation of the alluvial deposits gave results of Upper Smoke Creek, 580 000 tonne at 4.6ct/tonne and Limestone Creek, 1.7Mtonne at 3.5ct/tonne. Commercial production from the two alluvial deposits began in 1983 with production for the year reaching 6.2 Mct. Mining of the alluvial deposits at three to five Mct/year is proposed to continue until the start of mining of the AK1 deposit in late 1985 or early 1986 at which time a new processing plant and associated infra- structure will have been constructed adjacent to the AKl deposit in the Limestone Creek area. Production is planned at three Mtonne/year, producing 25Mct/year, which will make Western Australia the largest producer of natural diamond (by weight) in the world.

Instability in spoil piles and in high wall slopes in natural overburden has been ex- perienced at Utah's Goonyella Mine since com- mencement of operations in early 1971. Annual production targets, although gener- ally met since the commencement of operations, required modifications to stripping and mining techniques and the rapid re-scheduling of oper- ations around unstable areas, but culminated in the earlier than planned acquisition of addit- ional stripping equipment. An understanding of failure mechanisms was developed within a collaborative study of pitwall instability between Utah Development Company and the C.S.I.R.O. Division of Applied Geomechanics. Results showed that pitwall instability occurs as structurally controlled deformations along planar failure surfaces; spoil pile failures are precipitated by moist- ure ingress and subsequent loss of strength of base layer materials; highwall failures de- velop over areally extensive bedding planes in conjunction with inclined and subvertical fractures caused by overburden blast damage.

Below-ground technical complexity remains a traditional source of project challenge. Above-ground challenges then augment this complexity, including in the domain of commodity marketing. All challenges must be solved to produce quality, saleable, ex-mine product. The situation is further complicated in that technical complexities are not independent of each other, so complexity is best regarded as a system rather than a series of isolated factors. Additional above-ground challenges to mining projects are also increasingly sourced from societal and environmental factors, locally and globally. These challenges not only confer project complexity, but have their source in larger, global wicked problems. Finally, financing and resourcing of projects represents an ever-present challenge for all but the highest-quality mineral deposits. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Baizhangzi gold deposit is located in the northern North China Craton. The structural and lithological controls on the location and geometry of orebodies were studied through geologic survey, ore spatial configuration analysis and structural analysis. The orebodies of the deposit comprise auriferous quartz-sulfide veins and disseminated gold-bearing sulfides. The auriferous quartz-sulfide veins are dominantly hosted by the NNE- (and NE- and NW-) trending faults, which are subsidiary structures of the regional NNE-trending F2 fault. The subsidiary NNE-trending faults, having sinistral reverse kinematics, are associated with the sinistral reverse kinematics event of the F2 fault, which happened under a regional S–N-oriented compression stress field. The subsidiary NE- and NW-trending faults appear to be compressive and extensional respectively. These NE- (and NW-) trending faults are restricted to the granite intrusion and are associated with a sinistral strike-slip event of the F2 fault, which reactivated under a NW–SE-oriented compression stress field. It makes significant influence on geological evolution and distribution of different ore types that the strike of the F2 fault presents significant transition from NNE- to NE-trending in vertical. The ore-bearing disseminated host rocks, with widespread silicification and pyritisation, distribute in the lower inner contact zone of the granite intrusion, especially in the lower wavelike boundary of granite intrusion.CITATION:Xiong, L, Wei, J H and Shi, W J, 2015. FOR some time it has been recognised by the Metallurgical Staff that the presence of pyrite in the ore was adversely affecting the grades of the flotation concentrates.Following experimental work, it was decided to change over from the acid circuit in the mill to an alkaline circuit. The following description sets out the procedure adopted, -and the results obtained when such change-over was made.The Zinc Corporation ore consists mainly of galena, marmatite, calcite, and quartz, with smaller quantities of pyrite, fluorspar, and rhodonite.A clean specimen of marmatite picked from the ore assayed 53.4% zinc, and 10% iron, with no lead or insoluble. However, as zinc concentrates have been, at times, produced in the plant assaying over 53% zinc, and with only 8.7% iron, apparently the picked specimen of marmatite did not represent an average composition.The average would probltbly be between 8 and 9% of iron, and from 53.5 to 54.5% of zinc. It is obvious, therefore, that from this ore it is not possible to produce zinc concentrate of a higher grade than this average figure.In the Colorado School of Mines Quarterly for April, 1928, Vol. 23, No. 2, on page 47, we find the following statement:As the zinc in the ore exists as marmatite, which contains approximately 54.5% zinc and 10% iron, 49% zinc in the concentrate may be considered high.This statement refers to the ore treated in the Sullivan concentrator, owned by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited.

Anglo Coal Australia (ACA) takes a proactive position with regards to attracting and retaining employees at a graduate level. Currently, ACA has graduates in its program across all disciplines: Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Commercial, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, Human Resources, Safety Engineering and Processing Engineering. There is often a difference in opinion about the allocation of risk in the establishment of mine closure bonds or financial assurances. From the State’s perspective, protection is needed to ensure that the broader community is not left with the liability of properly closing a mine in the event of a default by the mine operator. Such a default might occur where an operator decides to abandon a site, perform incomplete rehabilitation, becomes insolvent or claims limited liability. On the other hand, mine operators who can demonstrate a strong financial position plus a record of social and environmental commitment and performance, argue that there should be some recognition of this in setting a bond that is less than the full cost of early closure. They argue that a mine rehabilitation bond based on the full cost of early closure is overly conservative and ignores the actual risk of the operator being in default. Health and safety are the first priority for Australian minerals sector. Australia has a global reputation in the mining industry. However, accidents occur every year. Legislation and regulation are important to prevent the accident from occurring, so do the new technologies. It is sad to witness the collision incident persisting and the long called collision avoidance system (CAS) is still not widely used in underground mines. The main reason is that the existing systems are still not advanced enough. The current CASs utilise GPS, infrared, ultrasonic, RFID, Radar, electromagnetic etc have their limitations and disadvantages. For instance, GPS is widely used in a surface mine, but it cannot be applied in underground mine; Infrared and electromagnetic have the false positive problem.

The terms measured resources and proven reserves denote the highest level of estimation confidence in all of the major classification schemes. But what do they really bring to today’s project or mine with respect to production planning and expectations? Initial reserve declaration does not need measured resources, just indicated resources. Economic viability of a project is assessed on total reserves with nary a bonus for the amount of proven reserves. Production plans are based on grade and tonnage goals that may only coincidently correspond to proven reserves. So are the measured and proven categories still relevant? Historically, and almost exclusively in underground mines, companies only allowed mining in areas of proven reserves. Some companies still follow that philosophy. But many others will mine a mixture of probable and proven reserves without hesitation. Also what of the undeveloped project in a new district – what is to be made of their declared measured resources and proven reserves? Measured resources are commonly set either by some type of proximity to data scheme or a matter of ‘feel’ based on the qualified person’s experience. The parameters for reserve conversion focus on the project as a whole and then a portion becomes classified as proven reserves almost solely based on whether the resource category is measured. So should the mining industry continue to use these categories of resource and reserve classification? This paper will present arguments about making these categories once again more relevant. A more disciplined usage of these categories may re-introduce their relevancy in public disclosures of resources and reserves. As well a more consistent usage in operations may lead to increased confidence in managing production targets and costs.

This paper will address this question from the point of view of a drill and blast engineer or researcher working in open cut and underground mining operations. The paper will establish a common set of reference standards for high-speed imaging and data capture, which engineers and researchers can apply when deciding which type of imaging technology is appropriate. It will present an overview of current image analysis technologies and practices in use across a range of appropriate scientific fields and draw lines of commonality of approach between these fields and the field of mining and blasting applications analysis and research. In addition, the paper will examine the different technologies from an image quality and data stream reference point, ease of operation, cost, and reliability parameters. Finally, this paper will present an argument for the hybridisation of established and new technologies which could provide a more beneficial approach to the use of imaging as a tool of quality control, research and analysis in the mining based industries. This will include a novel approach to digital high-speed imaging and data analysis in the field, which should deliver high-quality images and data analysis in a time frame that is more appropriate to the need for immediate action, analysis and problem solving.

Faced with the need to improve workplace conditions in both its development and production headings in its existing K1 orebody, as well as its new K Link and K2 orebodies, the Kencana mine in Indonesia took the novel approach of reversing the ventilation on most of its access ramp by outcasting up the ramp to the portal. Working levels were then fed with fresh air via auxiliary fans sealed into the current surface ‘egress’ intake raises (ladderways) or another small surface intake raisebore rather than from fans hung in the ramp as in the past. Outcasting the portal provided a substantial increase in the total mine exhaust capacity allowing fewer levels to be ventilated in series and significantly improving conditions, especially in the most difficult workplaces to ventilate. It also reduced the consequences if there was to be a fire on a vehicle in the ramp. The same system using the ramp as an exhaust is also intended to be used as part of the final ventilation solution for the new K2 orebody which also uses a novel single surface ventilation shaft that is vertically split into separate intake and exhaust compartments using a concrete brattice. Using the main ramp as an exhaust has potential application in many other operations in Australia using surface ramps which otherwise frequently suffer from overuse of series ventilation circuits and poor working conditions at the mine bottom.

The need for formalised geotechnical reporting has not been fully explored at many operations. With the continuing need to provide safer and more efficient workplaces, the requirement for good geotechnical reporting systems (as with other reporting systems) has become of greater importance.Historically, the risk from rockfalls has been the largest cause of fatal injuries in the underground mining industry. The response of the ground to mining is generally poorly documented at many mines. At Olympic Dam, it was found that the existing corporate hazard and incident reporting (HIR) procedure did not record enough specifics about geotechnical issues. A separate and more specific geotechnical reporting process was set up to address this problem.This paper examines the role that geotechnical reporting plays at the WMC Resources Olympic Dam Mine; from reporting and rectifying day-to-day geotechnical issues that affect the operation to documenting and analysing longer term trends.

Gold and silver mineralisation at the Chatree low sulfidation deposit is hosted in andesitic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks and characterised by multiple hydrothermal alteration assemblages and quartz-carbonate (chlorite-adularia) replacements, veins and breccias. The ore-bearing veins are influenced by intersecting structures and host rock lithologies. Emplacement of the host succession occurred at 250 ¦ 6 Ma (dated with laser ablation ICP-MS U-Pb zircon techniques), which was closely followed by mineralisation at 250.9 ¦ 0.8 Ma based on the analysis of adularia from coarse-grained quartz-sulfide (chalcopyrite-pyrite- sphalerite) veins using laser ablation Ar-Ar methods.
