The inferred ground conditions for the proposed mined cross passages at the northern end of the Waterview Connection tunnels consist of an overburden of alluvial and residual soils, with mixed face geology of highly weathered to unweathered extremely weak rock. This paper describes three-dimensional (3D) finite difference analyses undertaken to evaluate the stability of the cross passage headings and to validate the proposed sequence of excavation. The analyses undertaken incorporated the influence of the construction of the mainline tunnels and the breakout opening in the segmental lining for construction of cross passages.The stability analyses were carried out using FLAC3D™, version 4.0 (by Itasca Consulting Group) by progressive reduction of shear strength parameters to obtain a failure condition and estimate a factor of safety. For each step of strength reduction, corresponding increments of displacements of several points on heading faces were monitored. The stability obtained from numerical analyses was compared with analytical solutions. Interpretation of results of drained analyses indicated instability of the upper 2 m of heading face within the highly weathered rock mass. Additional analyses were undertaken by including grouted fibreglass dowels to reinforce the heading face. The results of the additional analyses showed significant reduction in displacements and yielding of ground around the face. The proposed temporary support comprised face reinforcement using grouted fibreglass dowels in conjunction with canopy tubes and perimeter support of steel fibre reinforced shotcrete. The development and construction of the Grasberg block cave mine (GBC) is in progress, currently targeting initiation of caving in late 2018. Current production planning anticipates ramping up to full production of 130 000 to 160 000 t/d by 2027. As GBC approaches the production phase, there is a high priority on increasing the accuracy and level of detail in the production plan. The advance of the cave front directly controls the drawbell opening rate that is achievable. Therefore, an essential component of this plan is to produce an undercutting and drawbell sequence that honours the caving parameters that have been set for the mining blocks by the GBC production planning team.The PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) mine planning team and the Geovia caving business unit have developed a computational tool (Undercut Tool) capable of generating an undercutting sequence that follows a set of caving rules, such as advance rate per tunnel, maximum blasted area per period, control of lead-lag and shape of the undercut face. This tool also produces a drawbell sequence that honours the undercutting advance sequence, which is ultimately used to generate a life-of-mine production plan. This paper describes the inputs and outputs of the Undercut Tool that have been used to compute the long-term production plan for the GBC mine. It will further describe how the Undercut Tool takes into account operational constraints and geotechnical considerations that must be considered when developing a defendable production plan. Included is a discussion of the initial results of the planning outcomes from the tool; it will demonstrate how this work will support specific aspects of the plan such as the detailed undercut production drill and blast plans for the drill ring sequence, as well as how that plan will drive the drawpoint opening plan.CITATION:Villa, D, Brannon, C A, Dipas, C A and Vega, H A, 2017. "With the recent advancement in drill core imaging systems, a large volume of high resolution drill core images can now be rapidly collected and mineralogically classified. This paper introduces a novel semi-automated method for rapid prediction of process engineering parameters from this type of image. The aim is to allow for a rapid and low-cost assessment of the ore processing variability within a mineral deposit with a reduced amount of metallurgical test work. This method will see its application primarily in the project evaluation phase, where proper evaluation of the processing variability of the orebody normally requires a prolonged and costly metallurgical test work program. Applying this image-based texture analysis method on the mineralogical classified drill core images, the ores are classified according to their textures. For each engineering parameter, a small number of physical test work is required to produce a data set for training and testing of the predictive model. Two characteristics of the modern mining industry are that there is a skill shortage and that young professional people rise rapidly into highly responsible supervisory positions. With this responsibility comes the burden of identifying and managing health and safety risks. Without the benefit of a comprehensive health and safety training program, these young professionals may be putting both themselves and those under their supervision at risk. The Moura Mine explosions and the asbestos health disaster should not be just artifacts of history, but highly valued lessons that impress the need for comprehensive health and safety risk management strategies on young professionals. From the perspective of the former secretary of the Committee to implement the findings of the Moura (Disaster) Inquiry and as the former coordinator of the Coal Workers Health Scheme, key issues in occupational health and safety management systems are explored.

The Haveluck gold deposit, located 2.5km north of Meekatharra, contained 1,284,000 tonnes at an average grade of 1.8 g/t gold of drill delineated proved and probable ore prior to commencement of production. Following successful laboratory and pilot scale testing a decision was made to establish a 300,000 tonnes per year heap leaching operation. The ore, crushed to minus 100mm was stacked on an impermeable membrane and irrigated with a dilute cyanide solution. Gold was recovered from the resulting pregnant solutions by adsorption onto activated carbon and gold bullion produced in a modified Zadra process desorption plant. From the commencement of mining it was obvious that a high percentage of fine material was being produced which would adversely affect the percolation of the cyanide solution-through the leach heaps. A screening plant was incorporated into the crushing circuit which provided an oversize product satisfactory for heap leaching and an undersize for carbon-in-pulp treatment. Plant design provided for the slurrying of minus 0.8mm ore before feeding to the pachuca tanks. Initial practice was to use four tanks for gold dissolution and two for carbon contact. Vibrating screens were used through- out for the carbon-ore separation and the loaded carbon was stripped in the existing desorption plant.

The Youga gold mine in Burkina Faso, West Africa, is scheduled to produce first gold in the third quarter of calendar 2007. The project is expected to produce 540 000 oz of gold over 6.5 years, from a conventional open pit carbon in leach mine. The direct capital cost of the project is US$47 M. Etruscan Resources Inc, a Canadian based gold exploration and development company, holds 90 per cent of the project company Burkina Mining Company SA (BMC). The state of Burkina Faso is free-carried for the remaining ten per cent of BMC. RMB Resources Limited, of Melbourne Australia, has arranged a US$35 M project finance facility for BMC (the Borrower) as the majority of funding for the Youga project development. The loan facility was provided by RMB Australia Holdings and Macquarie Bank Ltd (the Lenders) each as to 50 per cent in the lending syndicate. The Lenders also provided a gold hedging facility to guarantee a minimum price for the projectÆs gold production. Burkina Faso is a francophone country, part of the Economic and Monetary Union of West Africa (UEMOA). The project financing is the first such facility to be arranged for a mining project in Burkina Faso, with little or no precedent available in other UEMOA countries. Therefore, while the Youga gold project is forecast to be a robust project applying conventional mining and processing methods, a number of legal, technical, commercial and social issues required identification, evaluation and resolution before the loan could be established. This paper describes that evaluation process and the resolution of these issues. In-house experience and expertise in both the LendersÆ and BorrowerÆs teams has facilitated a greater understanding and æownershipÆ of the issues and hence provided comfort with risks which might not normally be taken in conventional project developments and project financings. As a result, blanket external reviews were not required by the Lenders. A long-standing relationship between Etruscan and RMB Resources also facilitated solutions to a number of issues. Nevertheless, a degree of flexibility by the Lenders, the Borrower and Etruscan was required to successfully close the financing.

Titanium feedstocks are the building blocks of the titanium value chain. They can be mined directly, as is the case for ilmenite, leucoxene and rutile, or manufactured from ilmenite by extracting various quantities of non-TiO2 components from the ore by chemical and/or thermal processes.While feedstocks can be grouped into categories of materials with similar characteristics, they are essentially unique products from very different mining locations around the world. In fact, no two feedstocks are exactly the same. As such, the variations between the available feedstocks, in combination with the permutations in processing technologies to turn the feedstocks into titanium pigment or metal, mean that choices between feedstocks are specific to the location in which they are utilised.In this paper, the authors examine the key requirements of titanium feedstocks to the TiO2 pigment and metal sectors. Apart from the well known differences between feedstock choices for the sulfate and chloride process, the more opaque considerations in feedstock sourcing are examined.

The revival of the mining industry at Captain's Flat after a long period of years of inactivity has attracted attention to the importance of the ore-deposits of that field as potential sources of supply of lead and zinc. Mindful of the necessity for taking stock of the State's mineral resources, the Department of Mines of New South Wales as part of its programme of geological investigation, carried out a survey of the oredeposits and associated country rocks during 1938 and 1940.Surface geology was mapped in detail and all available exposures were examined and logged. Unfortunately, and this condition militates against the formulation of conclusions because of insufficiem.t data, some of the older workings, notably in Keating's Section, were inaccessible and the logging of levels and stopes is by no means as complete as could be desired. However, with the progress of development and exploration, further information of geological value will come to hand for incorporation in supplementary reports. It may be expected that, under such circumstances, modification of certain statements herein expressed may be necessary but it is not anticipated that any vital alteration will be occasioned.Within the State of, New South Wales, Captain's Flat ranks second to Broken Hill as a pqtem.tial producer of lead and zinc. In addition, large quantities of iron pyrites are available for the manufacture of sulphuric acid which finds application in the superphosphate industry.The mines are now controlled by an operating company known as Lake George Mines, Ltd., incorporated in New South Wales, the parent organisation being the Lake George Mining Gorporation Ltd., registered in London.Over £600,000 has been spent by the Company in exploration, mine development, surface plant, housing and water 'conservation, while the State' Government constructed a branch railway from Bungendore at a cost of £200,000. The various activities consequent upon these development and construction programmes and the prospect of employment in the industry has led to a rapid increase in the population of the township.The State, generally, has benefited to the extent of a substantial contribution to the relief of the unemployment problem, and it is hoped that reasonable permanency will be assured to some hundreds of workers for many years.

About 60 persons are admitted to the graduate course every year after passing the entrance examinations. The entire course of studies is free of charge and the universities provide accommodation for the students who need it. The five years of studies are divided into 10 semesters. One semester lasts 15 weeks. Automatics can be studied at three separate faculties. At the University of Mining and Metallurgy, it is offered by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics and Electronics as well as the Faculty of Mining and Metallurgical Machines (metrology can also be studied there); at the Silesian Technical University in Gliwice, the Faculty of Mining offers the course. The educational plans and programmes comprise 3 groups of subjects: common for a given course of studies (foreign languages, political science and the basic technical knowledge) common for the speciality and subjects of diploma courses. The whole time of studies covers about 4400 hours excluding 3 periods of professional training and the physical training. The classes, laboratory classes, seminars and design classes are obligatory and the attendance is strictly checked. Students may extend their knowledge by participating and working in the Science Clubs. The students' work is checked not only during the classes but also by the examinations held at'the end of respective semesters. Those who fail the exams can repeat them only if very important reasons are presented. At the very end of the studies there is a diploma examination together with a discussion on the diploma thesis, written by the student. The successful result entitles the student to recieve the title of "magister inzynier",M.Sc. of his speciality. The graduates, after working for 2 years, can attend another course of studies lasting 2 semesters and called "Postgraduate Course", or start "Doctoral Studies" finished by the defence of a doctor's thesis. In'these cases the expenses are usually covered by the graduates' employers.

Extracting alumina from bauxite involves the production of fine-grained waste known as red mud. The highly alkaline red mud is usually neutralised by applying sea water, thickened to between 25% and 30% solids by mass, before disposal to a Tailing Storage Facility (TSF). Hydraulic sorting, settling, self-weight consolidation, and desiccation are the processes contributing to the overall volume change of the red mud after deposition. Investigating the effect of these processes on the volume change behaviour of the fine-grained red mud is an important step in the estimation of the required storage volume of the storage facilities. Chlorination of organic matter by direct injection of chlorine gas or hypochlorite has been investigated metallurgically worldwide with little understanding of the basic chemistry of the passivation mechanisms in- volved. In this paper, chlorination of carbon is attributed to oxidation-reduc- tions, resulting in surface halogenation of graphitic or amorphous carbon. It is proposed that chlorine and carbon interact to form thin coatings of chioro-carbon complexes that block the adsorption of gold cyanide com- plexes, thus passivating the gold adsorption sites of carbonaceous matter. Analytical, spectrographic, microscopic and electron-optical methods have been applied to demonstrate the proposed mechanism of chlorine-carbon bonding, as well as to evaluate the advantages and limitations of chlorination in the pretreatment of refractory carbonaceous gold ores.

Airborne rock dust poses serious long-term health complications to workers in the underground mining and civil environment where rock excavation is utilised. During drilling, airborne rock particles are immediately released into the breathable environment where additionally, the settled dust can be reintroduced into the air further down in production. The purpose of this study is to build a characterisation suite of dust particles such that underground operations can implement more appropriate dust suppression and mitigation techniques in accordance to pick wear. Therefore, concrete is cut to create a preliminary dust characterisation baseline, where future cutting tests will be performed on limestone and sandstone rocks.In this study, three conical pick wears (new, moderately worn, and fully worn picks) are used to generate dust from a concrete block and characteristics are statistically compared between the dusts. Airborne respirable particles are collected during cutting and deposited fine material, orparticles left on the surface of the block, are collected after cutting. The dusts are then analysed through standardised methods, field emission scanning electron microscope image capture with image analyses, and laser diffraction methods. Findings reveal that the worn pick generated thehighest concentration of respirable dust, all picks generated dust containing quartz, the three picks generally generated respirable dusts with similar particle shapes (in terms of roundness, roughness, and aspect ratio), and the worn pick generated the largest deposited fine material particles.

The role of the virgin in situ stress field in tunnelling projects is well known in the Sydney area. The effect of in situ stresses is mostly considered through the use of published relationships that describe the in situ stress conditions as a function of depth. Considering the significant scatter in the data, it is evident that by adopting such relationships, the designers are assuming an average distribution of stresses with depth that is generally a reasonable engineering approach; however, when building a geomechanical model, the tunnelling or geotechnical engineer needs to account for the interrelationship between ground conditions (rock mass quality – fracturing, strength and stiffness) and in situ stress, which may explain part of the stress data scatter. Grinding clinker to finished cement consumes more energy than any other comminution process. World production of cement in 2009 was 2840 million tonnes and the energy required for comminution was 40-60 kWh/tonne depending on the clinker characteristics and the fineness of the finished cement. Machines used include single and multi compartment ball mills, HPGRs, vertical roller mills, centrifugal air separators, V separators, screens and crushers. The circuit most commonly used consists of a closed circuit HPGR followed by a single compartment ball mill and an air separator, and in operation the variables are adjusted to obtain maximum throughput with no loss of quality of the separator fines.A common objective in cement plants is to reduce energy consumption without affecting the particle size in the finished cement and simulation is used as one procedure to achieve this. Models are now available for all the machines commonly used in clinker circuits and circuit optimisation studies using simulation have been carried out in many plants leading to decrease in energy consumption per tonne of cement. In this paper the models used will be discussed briefly and several case studies will be reviewed which will highlight the effect of change in ball size in a two compartment mill, the role of the HPGR in an HPGR – ball mill – air separator circuit, and the use of a high intensity vibrating mill for producing finished cement with high additive ratio.

Silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) is a bonding phase in the iron ore sinter. The phase transition upon melting of SFCA was investigated with Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope. The initial melting of SFCA occurred at 1183.2°C and a massive melting was found at around 1351.1–1358.2°C. A phase transition-melting was investigated at 1476.5–1478.7°C. The liquid phase was composed of immiscible phases. The present results would be utilised to design a new iron ore sinter for better processing performance in a hydrogenenriched ironmaking process.

The link between geostatistics and Theory of Sampling (TOS) is examined again in view of new findings made while trying to compare predicted sampling variances and estimated grades (using geostatistics) on the same material, and this provides an important consistency requirement whenever calculations are made that involve both theories in a comparative way. This paper discusses the use of simulation in the mine planning process. A case study on the Newcrest Cadia East project is presented, and the challenges and possibilities for using simulation as a tool for mine planning and scheduling is discussed.The simulation study presented in this paper was performed during the project’s prefeasibility stage, and focused on the planning and scheduling of the development of panels in the future mine. The Cadia East project will be the largest underground operation in Australia and the first using panel caving. Simulation was used in order to optimise the development of panels; it was mainly used in order to verify the plans for the development process and allocate resources in an optimal way. The work was performed as an iterative process and adjustments to the plans were made according to simulation results. Bottlenecks were identified and different scenarios were tested.The results from the simulation study shows how different operational constraints affect the planned development process and how changes in priorities can be necessary in order to maintain a high development speed. Furthermore the study shows how changes in planned mine layout requires changed strategies, and how this was solved using the simulation tool.In this paper the authors critically discusses the use of simulation in mining operations: what are the limitations and challenges of using simulation as a tool for mine planning and scheduling, what are the benefits, and what do we aim for in the future?

Glencore’s Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) operates the Mount Isa open cut and underground copper (Cu) and zinc-lead (Zn/Pb) mines near Mount Isa in Queensland, Australia. Tailings from processed Cu and Zn-Pb ore is contained in a 1,315 ha shallow (< 35 m deep) multi-cell valley fill tailings storage facility (TSF). Static geochemical testing conducted by MIM over the life of mine (LoM) verifies that the Cu, and Zn-Pb tailings has a wide range in sulfide content and diverse mineralogy with significant acid neutralising capacity (ANC) in some samples. The tailings are predominantly classified as potentially acid forming (PAF) using static analytical methods. Kinetic leach testing using free draining columns and humidity cell tests simulating tailings placed on the surface of the TSF suggest that the tailings samples are likely to remain non-acid forming (NAF) for 10 to 40 years under aerial exposure, and much longer than this under saturated conditions within the TSF. During this period of weathering, as ANC is depleted, the neutral pH drainage may contain elevated concentrations of some elements including sulfate, manganese and zinc. The Certificate in Mining Studies program at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada is a collaborative initiative between mining schools and industry to provide accessible, cost-effective, accredited continuing education and training, designed to address the future needs of the global mining community. Content is provided by industry specialists and delivered through an integration of online learning, short courses and interactive webcasts. Accreditation is provided by a network of mining schools. In 2011, the program will deliver close to 100 short courses and interactive webcasts and provide 24/7 access to more than 130 online courses in six mining streams, to participants from as far afield as Tanzania, Argentina and Mongolia. The program is proving adaptable to corporate and mine site engineer-in-training and graduate-development programs, as well as providing accessible professional development opportunities for individuals. It also provides opportunities for cross-training from other disciplines and integration with mining school curricula.

The risk and consequences of community rejection and loss of a social licence to operate is well articulated (Moffat et al 2018), however, the means for systematically managing this risk are less established. At the local scale, a mining operation is said to have a social licence to operate (SLO) when it achieves ongoing acceptance or approval from the local community and other stakeholders who can affect its profitability (Graafland, 2002). Without this social acceptance, it is very difficult for a business to operate effectively or profitably. It is well understood that social (or community) acceptance of a mine and its associated operations is a reflection of the quality of the relationship a company has with their host community (Thomson & Boutilier, 2011; Lacey & Lamont, 2014; Parsons et al., 2014; Moffat et al., 2015). Community relations are an integral part of successful mining operations and where these interactions are effective, they tend to foster mutual understanding, trust and support between a company and the host community (Kemp et al., 2006; Holley & Mitcham, 2016). Research further demonstrates that where such interactions are perceived to be procedurally fair, the increased trust created in these company-community interactions tends to lead to higher levels of acceptance of mining operations (Moffat & Zhang, 2014; Lacey et al., 2017).The challenge, however, is how to listen systematically to communities that mining and associated operations; communities that are often located across vast geographic areas and with diverse demographics. To date, traditional methods deployed to both guide and evaluate community engagement and social investment activities have been challenged to reflect the nature of the phenomenon they seek to observe, the voice of community. For example, detailed baseline surveys of community attitudes every three years by companies, as is the requirement within the policy frameworks of most large miners, provide rich insights but do not reflect the dynamic, temporal nature of the relationships that underpins their SLO. These processes typically are largely opaque to communities and distinct from the company’s engagement activities. The CSIRO Local Voices project was developed with Rio Tinto to go some way towards meeting this challenge of how to listen to the voice of community systematically.
