At Newmont Corporation drill hole spacing studies are done to support the business in understanding the cost of collecting additional information (with a specific focus on drill hole sampling density) versus the value of additional drilling in terms of resource risk reduction. For the last 20 years drill hole spacing studies have been executed in an effort to answer the following question: What spacing should the deposit be drilled at to achieve a certain level of resource confidence so that when mining occurs the resource model delivers as predicted ie what is the optimal sampling density? The optimal sampling density supports a resource model that provides a sound foundation for mine planning purposes and resource/reserve reporting. At Newmont Corporation drill hole spacing studies are now a requisite for understanding drill data density needs for new deposits and near mine expansions. This paper details the evolution of drill hole spacing studies at Newmont Corporation in terms of methodology and usage.

Hematite ore has been mined in the Southern Middleback Ranges as blast furnace feed for the steelworks at Whyalla, by what was then BHP, since 1991. With the floating of BHP Integrated Steel as OneSteel in 2001 and the subsequent loss of key mining personnel, breakdowns in grade control methods and procedures occurred. These were compounded by changes in orebody characteristics and grade distribution leading to poor reserve recovery and poor grade control, both which resulted in loss of control of ore specification and severe deviation from the mining schedule. As a result, a total review of grade control, mining method and scheduling procedures was undertaken as well as a review of contractor quality assurance. It was found that sampling methods were poor and unrepresentative, grade control blocking processes were outdated and did not reflect the geology of the deposit, the ore mining method was outdated and did not respect the geometry of the orebody, reconciliation methods were being completed globally and were not reflective of individual areas of the deposit, and that deviations from the mine plan were occurring due to access to high-grade areas outside the schedule in order to bring stockpiles back on grade. Based on these findings, updated sample splitter systems were fitted to drill hole rigs, double bench sampling was implemented (2 + 4 m samples as opposed to 1 + 8 m sample) and a three-dimensional cellular grade control system introduced to better reflect the geology and orientation of the deposit. At the same time ore mining was changed from front end loaders mining on 8 m benches to excavator mining on three lifts on 8 m benches; this aided selectivity and respected the geometry of the orebodies aiding cleaner recovery. Reconciliation is now completed on a blast-by-blast basis, which allows for quick and easy identification of poorly performing areas of the resource model that can then be incorporated back into resource model updates. Regular daily and weekly meetings are also held with emphasis on the mining schedule to ensure no deviation from the schedule in the long term. These improvements have resulted in a lift in reserve recovery both globally and locally associated at the same time with improvement in grade.

BHP Western Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) operations use a suite of slope monitoring systems which are deployed to operational areas based on the ground control risk. Slope Radars are one system used within WAIO, having recently deployed and integrated a network of 22 radar systems across the operations. The integration required the development of supporting network architecture, infrastructure, virtualised hosting, security protocols and a technology support model. This has enabled data transfer between the physical radar systems located in open pits, to on-site offices, a vendor supported remote control room in Indonesia and the WAIO Integrated Remote Operations Centre for data analysis and monitoring of system and displacement alarms 24/7. The typical technical skillset of a Geotechnical Engineer does not include the knowledge and capability to understand and develop the supporting IT infrastructure required for establishing an integrated radar monitoring network. This paper will provide a discussion of the technology considerations for integrating radar systems and highlight the importance of the developed partnerships between internal geotechnical and technology teams and the external vendor team to ensure a reliable, robust and scalable slope monitoring solution.

The development of robust, economical transport infrastructure has been identified as a key driver to sovereign economic growth. Notwithstanding the value of undeveloped mineral resources, unless they can be brought to market they are of little value. Within a global context, the continent of Africa probably faces one of the most significant transport driven economic development programs as countries strive to unlock their much sought after resources.The UN’s Africa Review Report on Transport (United Nations Economic and Social Council, 2009) provides an excellent context for the issue facing African countries and the potential for investment in transport to solve many of the intrinsic problems they are confronted with. With little exception, economic development in Africa is very likely to be driven ‘off the back’ of transport development – and more specifically from heavy-haul rail as a means by which economic wealth can be derived from export of the continent’s vast natural and mineral resources to the world. The report found:transport is a key driver of economic development and poverty reduction;road transport is the most dominant mode in Africa;the ‘Cost to Market’ of African goods is hampered by the reliance upon road transport;the cost of road transport is not just economic – 19 per cent of the world’s road fatalities were recorded on African roads;African railways are seen to be disjointed and under-utilised;Africa’s ports are key to export trade - yet only six ports (three in Egypt, and three in South Africa) handle about 50 per cent of the continent’s total container traffic;the cost of transport is increasing making African trade even less competitive; andsignificant negative impacts of Africa’s reliance on road transport – health, and greenhouse emissions.We understand that mining the resource is only part of the solution – it has to be put to market at a competitive landed cost.Most African countries face huge costs associated with transport development and ongoing operation – in many cases beyond their available resources.The Australian rail industry has faced and solved many of these challenges.

Air blasts or wind blasts as they are termed in underground coal mining, occur in a number of types of underground mining where a void develops and the overlying or adjacent rock fails rapidly to allow the development of a high pressure air pulse. The effects of air blast vary widely from very low consequence to high consequence events causing multiple fatalities as occurred at North Parkes mine. The aim of this paper is to examine the phenomena of air blasts and the underlying parameters which determine the severity of the air blast event. A basic model under development is then detailed. The aim of the model is to determine the magnitude of the pressure pulse(s) developed during an air blast event. This, combined with a transient ventilation network analysis model will enable the airflows and associated pressure drops to be determined and allow the pressure pulse around the mine to be evaluated. The overall aim is to allow mining engineers and mine ventilation engineers to undertake a risk assessment of air blasts at individual mine sites, allowing working parameters to be changed to eliminate or reduce air blasts, or engineering controls to be developed to reduce the effects of air blasts.CITATION:Tuck, M A, 2013. A coal dust explosion is one of the most significant risks in the harsh and complex environment of an Underground Coal Mine (UCM). Reviewing literature, regulations and existing systems surrounding explosive dust management shows that there have been few advancements in managing this risk over the past 90 years. Legislation has remained relatively stagnant and minimal systems are implemented in the real world that can simplify, standardise and improve the effectiveness of UCM explosive dust management. To help bridge this gap, Corehesion, in collaboration with an UCM has designed, developed and implement an Explosive Dust Risk Mitigation System (EDRMS) utilising components of Business Intelligence (BI) that is capable of real-world use in industry. To do this the existing explosive dust management process at the associated research mine was evaluated to form high-level and detailed design requirements, focusing on digitally simplifying the procedure, not replicating it. The system was then iteratively and incrementally developed and implemented at the research mine to commence real-world use. The developed BI platform is compared with the existing process to highlight the advancements in performance transparency, efficiency and optimisation of UCM explosion mitigation. This comparison and evaluation of the real-world system implementation at the research mine demonstrate its success in automating procedure steps, providing a readily accessible source of data and enabling a proactive approach to planning and managing explosion risk mitigation. In addition to improvements just for the research mine, this EDRMS created directly address many Queensland regulatory audit findings. By finalising the total system and making the highlighted changes for standardisation, this BI system will have the adaptable capabilities for implementation across the UCM industry. As accurate data availability improves at UCMs, further work can be done to improve the systems’ optimisation techniques and integration of other risks.

Railway cuttings require the highest care in design and construction, as the pro- bability of failure concept does not allow any risks to be taken with hundreds of lives being dependent on continued stability. The usual geological influences on stability such as bedding dip and faulting are often discus- sed, but other major problems may come from the presence of sheet joints, cross joints differential weathering and seasonal or daily changes of ground water level. The design of rail cuttings has taken little note of the problems imposed by cons- truction methods, and low cost quarrying methods may seriously weaken a designed shape. The presence of berms and drainage ditches is often difficult to achieve as blasting imposes cumulative stresses and jointing on rocks. Contractors face difficulties in bidding extensive rock cuttings as variations in rock properties are often concealed and overshoot- ing the toe of a batter can easily occur. Modern blasting methods offer some solutions, but the best guide to safe successful cuttings is extensive investigation and the continued involvement of engineering geology at the stages of feasibility, design, construction and maintenance. Two case histories show the influence of folding, faulting and construction methods in the case of slope failure and slope stability.

In 2003, Anglo Platinum, in a joint development with Xstrata Technology, installed the world’s first 10 000 litre IsaMillTM in a concentrate regrind duty at the Western Limb Tailings Re-treatment Plant. The success of that installation was the enabling event for Anglo Platinum to proceed with a substantial investment in horizontal stirred milling technology. Since 2006 an additional three IsaMillsTM in concentrate regrind duties and a further 18 IsaMillsTM in the more technically challenging coarse grinding mainstream applications, have been commissioned in group Concentrator operations - bringing the total number of IsaMillsTM installed in Anglo Platinum plants to 22.A collaborative approach between Anglo Platinum and Xstrata Technology towards improving milling efficiency and reducing operating costs, through internal mill component wear optimization and operating recipe development, has resulted in further improvements in the overall success of IsaMillsTM in the flow sheets of many Anglo Platinum operations. The addition of IsaMillsTM in the Anglo Platinum flow sheets has improved plant PGM recoveries by as much as 5%.This paper explores the improvements made to the IsaMillsTM flow sheet and mill internal design and shares some of the operating experience with IsaMillsTM technology in Anglo Platinum

Business intelligence (BI) and business analytics (BA) are established IT technologies that are used extensively in the business environment. This paper discusses the use of these technologies in production environments and beneficiation plants.Assmang’s Khumani mine is an iron ore operation located in the Northern Cape, South Africa. Assmang Limited is jointly owned by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited. This paper presents a case study of a BI solution applied to this plant, which is used by metallurgists, supervisors and all levels of operations and management to extract and analyse data to control and optimise the operation of the plant.The main advantage of adopting an established BI solution is the ease with which production personnel can extract and analyse data. The data is easily presented in familiar spreadsheets and no IT staff or specific training is required to achieve this.The solution adopted at Khumani mine uses a data mart with a multidimensional model (called an online analytical processing (OLAP) cube) acting as the main repository and source of data. The OLAP cube simplifies the access and analysis of plant data.The OLAP cube stores data in a specifically-designed way, which allows extraction and analysis to be performed quickly. It is designed to hold large amounts of data on a long-term basis, which could be for the life of the plant. It also performs automatic aggregations over many dimensions on a background process.A major benefit in adopting such a BI solution is that it allows common BA methods to be applied. This is due to both the efficient long-term storage of data and the availability of standard BA tools. BA tools are now able to perform data mining, predictive analytics, forecasting and other machine-learning algorithms. The effect of sodium sulfite (Na2SO3) on the flotation behaviour of bornite and tennantite is reported in this work. Flotation tests were performed using pure minerals of bornite and tennantite under various concentrations of sodium sulfite at pH 9. The flotation results indicated that sodium sulfite exhibited a depressing effect on the floatability of bornite in the presence of 0.1 mM PAX. However, tennantite remained floatable after the addition of sodium sulfite in the presence of 0.1 mM PAX. The flotation tests using mixed bornite and tennantite confirmed the flotation results of single minerals. Surface characterisation using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was performed to explain the flotation results. A mechanism is proposed based on the XPS analysis results.

Test work is the foundation upon which the success of projects and subsequent operations is laid, reflected in Professor Arthur Taggart’s pithy observation: ‘Make your mistakes on the small scale and your profits on the larger scale’. Indeed, Professor AllanTrench has succinctly noted that ‘Get the metallurgical characteristics wrong and you don’t have a project’.With deposits becoming lower grade, more structurally and mineralogically complex, final products requiring lower levels of impurities and tailings management demanding more attention, test work now assumes even greater significance in the acceptance and successful execution of a project. This paper is the first in a series aiming to stimulate thought on the metallurgical test work process by getting back to the fundamental basics through exploring and providing some guidelines for the metallurgical testing world, noting preferred practices as well as precautions and mitigations. This covers the key characteristics of metallurgical test work programs, including what needs to be done, sample selection, quality control and associated drivers, and most importantly, selecting, assessing and managing test work facilities. The routine use of gravity gradiometry for the detection of orebodies with no outcrop is now being undertaken. The commodities and orebody styles range from banded iron ore formations to volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) style polymetallic deposits. This recent innovation of flying gravity gradiometry was pioneered by BHP Billiton and Lockheed Martin with the Falcon technology (Lee, 2001), and now two additional systems, also using Lockheed Martin instruments, are deployed. In South Africa, magnetic gradiometry is being developed and deployed with the same objectives in mind. In this case, a system from Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT) is being used. The detectable wavelengths from such systems have decreased to less than 200 m in the last year, and it is expected in 2011 that wavelengths to less than 100 m, with anomaly signal strengths of less than 2 Eotvos for gravity gradiometry will be viable. The key to these advances lies in the improvements of processing software and geological modelling. In particular, methods using all the tensor components are starting to be routinely deployed to filter, level and grid the observed signal. These methods do, however, require full insight and understanding of the reference coordinate systems used by the various instrument designers and survey operators. The digital terrain models need also to be observed to an accuracy of better than 20 m cell sizes, using such techniques as Lidar. Then the terrain effects can be modelled. The topographic surface represents the largest and most proximal density contrast encountered in an airborne survey. Hence terrain effects can have significant impact on airborne gravity gradiometry data. A decorrelation of the terrain effect with the observed signal requires a method of best fitting with a regional surface density. A novel technique has been developed for this purpose. This technique uses a tensor algebra to estimate a density between 1 - 4 g/cc that explains the average observed signal. Armed with this result, the anomalous buried bodies can be revealed by subtraction.

The role and importance of a well designed test work program during the development of an orebody is often underestimated. A test work program should be tailored to deliver very specific answers to relevant questions. With a clear purpose, the results from the test work program will enhance the outcome of the feasibility study and provide the information required to meet the requirements of all stakeholders. With regard to test work programs there are three main areas that should be considered: orebody characterisation and definition, process flow sheet development and engineering design information.Orebody definition relies on reliable analytical methods to characterise and assess the economic minerals present in the ground. In mineral sands, the physical processing characteristics of the minerals play a significant role in the definition of an orebody. The analytical method therefore has to be customised using a combination of laboratory techniques. These techniques can include heavy liquid separation, gravity separation and magnetic separation and are usually combined with chemical and mineralogical analyses to create a picture of the orebody. During the definition phase of test work programs, an appropriate analytical technique has to be developed to evaluate drilling samples, but also to support the information collected during flow sheet development.Process flow sheet development is usually done once there is a reasonable understanding of the size and variability of the orebody. Selecting the best sample for test work is critical, as any flow sheet design is tied to the specific characteristics of the sample used for development. There are other factors that can improve the outcomes of flow sheet development test work, including the skills and knowledge of the operator and allowing sufficient time to process and analyse the results. Very often this work is conducted under pressure with limited time and resources, only to result in a suboptimal flow sheet. During this phase of flow sheet test work, iterative testing will provide the information required to develop an optimal metallurgical flow sheet. The data collected will provide indicative recoveries and yields that are required for feasibility studies.Equipment specification is often included as part of process flow sheet development. This includes comparative test work between different equipment suppliers, assessment of operating conditions such as the loading to determine the number of processing units required, as well as other design information required such as particle size distributions, density and operating temperatures.While restricting the time and costs expended on test work programs may seem to meet a short term need to meet investor requirements, neglecting to develop a proper framework of the requirements that has to be met in the long-term can lead to significant long-term cost overruns. This is mainly due to a need to repeat test work, or do confirmation test work, as insufficient information was collected during the initial program.

Oversize rock breaking and metal tramp removal are key issues for reducing primary crusher downtime, as well as improving the safety associated with its operation. Remote operation of such tasks would thus not only increase productivity, but also reduce the risks related to work in confined spaces, fall risks, and overhead hazards. These issues are particularly relevant in high-capacity operations such as iron ore mining, where large machines are in continuous operation. This article describes the architecture, construction and advanced testing of a novel remotely operated robotic mechanism for assessment and removal of metal tramp from primary crusher chambers. The system essentially includes a robotic-arm equipped with a hydraulic clamp tool for handling oversize material, as well as an oxy-flame module for cutting metal pieces entrapped within the primary crusher cavity. The first industrial unit was delivered to a large iron ore mine in Brazil, where the installation and testing is scheduled within the coming months.

Such an organisation is able to respond in a timely manner to change because employees are empowered to be creative, to experiment and to suggest new ideas. The process of innovation is triggered by employees throughout the organisation in a collaborative manner.Problem solving becomes a core competence of the consultancy. A multidisciplined approach arrives at superior solutions that are rigorous, holistic, achievable and often novel. Energetics has been in the business of climate change for more than twenty years. This experience has only served to cement the understanding that decisions taken during design define the environmental and economic performance of any project. The 80-20 rule definitely applies, with 80% of a project’s performance being set through the first 20% of design decisions. This in depth knowledge is used for determining energy price forecasts, future carbon markets and carbon costs, current and future energy technologies, as well as giving a thorough understanding of the processes and technologies in place in the mining industry to work out what the most carbon and energy sensitive decisions during design are. Project selection and design is a gated process where decisions are taken in line with the information available at that point in the evolution of the project. Design decisions are, by their nature, dominated by uncertainty. In order to ensure that robust decisions are taken, it is necessary to ensure that the correct information is brought to bear at the correct decision point. This then defines and supplies the necessary carbon and energy information for design decisions to be correctly made. One of the most significant risks facing design engineers and decision makers in the mining industry is the future cost of energy. Part of this risk is associated with a future cost of carbon, however, a significant part of this risk is the cost, and variability in this cost, of the energy itself. This paper investigates the information required to support good decision taking during the design process.Project Managers and MetPlant Operators accept poor quality evaluations because they are generally unaware of what they should expect.The 2010 draft AusIMM ‘Guidelines for Techno-Economic Evaluations’ were collated by a subcommittee of practitioners and are regarded as best practice.They apply directly to projects and metallurgical plant evaluations, including those with a heavy technical basis. They can be applied to technical problem solving where there are no monetary computations.Project Managers and MetPlant Operators should demand that economic models and evaluations follow the six principles. They should become working tools which are easy to understand, fit for purpose, consistent, rigorous, record sources of input data, have key graphs and are rapid to audit.

There is a close relationship between the mining industry, economic growth, and technological and social development. Mining activities benefit all economic agents, but only during a timespan determined by available reserves, primarily driven by internal factors such as production rate, technology and costs, and external factors such as prices determined by the market and taxes and royalties controlled by governments (Gordon and Tilton, 2008; Henckens, 2021; Tapia Cortez et al, 2018). The intense use of Mineral Commodities (MC) needed to maintain the current lifestyle has placed ore depletion as one of the main threats to sustainable economic, social and technological development. However, ore depletion does not only arise due to the finite nature of MC, price fluctuations or technological challenges. It is also triggered by the ‘economic limits of extraction’, determined by the optimisation of financial factors and technical restrictions within the regulatory framework (Henckens, 2021). Most reporting standards – if not all – define ore reserves as ‘the economically mineable part of a Measured and/or Indicated Mineral Resources’ determined by the technical and economic viability of extracting, processing and commercialising MC having the NPV as the fundamental decision – making tool (JORC, 2012; Krzemień et al, 2016). However, is the NVP an ‘economically’ basis index able to capture the complexity of economic phenomena? No, it is not, and it is crucial to define what is economic and financial. Although related, they are different disciplines. Economics studies the behaviour of the different market agents, including human behaviour and policies and explains the factors involved in the scarcity (or surplus) of goods and services. Finance focuses on financial systems and managing funds considering the time, cash available, and risk. It involves banks, loans, investments, and savings and can be considered a small subset of economics (Simon, 1959; Tapia Cortez et al, 2018). Given the economic nature of ore Reserves, endorsed by governments (Figure 1), NPV is an incomplete tool to determine ore Reserves as it limits the problem to simply maximising cash flows instead of optimising the economic benefits for all economic agents. In addition, using the rigid scheme of controlling taxation – unable to adapt to new market or economic conditions and systematically increasing – within the NPV framework only increases the sub-optimisation of ore reserves, mainly due to the systematic taxation rise. Short-term benefits of higher taxes and royalties are unlikely to offset the impacts of reducing exploration and project development in the long-term, which not only boosts ore depletion concerns but also reduces competitiveness, threatening economic and social welfare (Fisher, Cootner and Baily, 1972; Gordon, Bertram and Graedel, 2007; Lilford, 2017; Mardones, Silva and Martínez, 1985; Radetzki, 2009; Rodrik, 1982; Tan, 1987; World Bank, 2000). Holistic methods and collaborative tools, able to dynamically simulate and assess how changes in the technical settings, regulatory framework (taxes and royalties), and financial factors affect the availability of ore reserves and the impact for all economic agents, should be incorporated into the evaluation process to fill the gap.

The Metropolitan Water Supply, Sewerage and Drainage Board, Perth, has recently con- structed two major sewerage tunnels in the metropolitan area and a further one is under construction. These tunnels were constructed in sand, sandstone and limestone. The Tamala Limestone is a Pleistocene calcareous dune sand which now varies in com position from loose sand to cemented rock. Investigation techniques included surface mapping, auger and diamond core drilling, seismic refraction geophysics and mechanical testing. The variable nature of the ground caused difficulties in all aspects of the investigation, particularly in core recovery and seismic work. The Beenyup Tunnel, 2.25m in diameter and 3440m long was excavated with a Dosco TBM 1800 machine and shield with precast concrete Charcon Universal bolted segment lining. The Burns Beach Sewer Tunnel, 1.27m in diameter and 860m long was hand excavated with precast reinforced concrete lining pipes jacked continuously behind an excavation

It is estimated that substandard ground support installations and elements cost the Rio Tinto Copper Group millions of dollars between 2000 and 2014. These issues have also created significant safety and financial risks in Rio Tinto mines. As a result, Rio Tinto Copper has developed CaveCAD, an integrated system to collect, store and analyse all ground support-related data. The CaveCAD system stores geotechnical data and has the ability to automatically import data, collect data through tablet applications, report processed/analysed data and present this data through 3D visualisation software.The CaveCAD Ground Support module closes the design–implementation–verification loop by providing a method of verifying the compliance of all installed ground support, recording manufacturer specifications, recording quality control test compliance and rectifying any non-conformant areas. The module uses innovative technology to create value through cost saving, safety improvements and data collection efficiency. Cost savings will be achieved by a decreased need for excavation rehabilitation, less ‘waste’ due to faulty installation and quality assurance checks reducing the likelihood of substandard support units being used. For up to 75 years large scale coal mining has been carried out within the Latrobe Valley region of Victoria. Withdrawal of groundwater from Tertiary aged sediments within the Latrobe Valley is essential to allow coal mining to proceed to depth. Water within the overburden layers, coal seams and interseams must be drained to avoid flooding during the mining process. The pressure in deeper aquifers must also be lowered to avoid floor heave, batter instability, and to maintain safe operating conditions as the mines develop in size and depth. The cost-effective management of the groundwater systems at and adjacent to the mining operations in the Latrobe Valley is essential to enable the efficient utilisation of the coal resource whilst minimising the environmental impact of this major industry in rural Victoria. Large-scale depressurisation and dewatering programs within the Latrobe Valley mines are managed through the use of detailed groundwater management plans. These incorporate:an extensive monitoring network which extends up to 60 kilometres from the mines; detailed mine scale and regional groundwater and hydrogeological models; and established operational procedures aimed at minimising capital and operational costs associated with the mine groundwater systems. Groundwater extraction system optimisation programs have been introduced into two of the mines with the aim of reducing extraction rates, improved risk management, and reducing operational costs by approximately whilst not compromising mine safety. This paper reviews the aquifer depressurisation and mine dewatering operations of the Latrobe Valley mines and illustrates the techniques utilised to ensure that high artesian pressures do not adversely impact on the mining operations.
