Historical exploration of the Ballarat East goldfield defined two primary quartz vein lode types. Tracking the intersection of these lodes with vertical lines of enrichment (or so-called æindicatorsÆ) was the basic practice for historical mining. This strategy proved highly successful in terms of identifying quartz veins associated with mineralisation. However, it provides little understanding of the timing or processes involved in the formation of these veins, or the associated emplacement of gold. Current underground mapping shows the Ballarat East gold deposit can be subdivided into four stages of vein formation. The earliest veins (V1 and V2) strike north-south and formed during bedding flexural slip and limb thrust fault propagation in parasitic chevron folds. V3 veins are subhorizontal and relate to further fold tightening involving a transition from east-west compression to north-south extension that initiated re-shear of bedded slip surfaces and additional strike-slip faults. Sporadic V4 veins overprint the shallow-dipping sections of V2 and V3 veins and are associated with weak north-south compression. The V4 veins mineralogy is distinguished by a high carbonate content and sphalerite-galena sulfide assemblage. Vein sampling indicates a significant increase in gold mineralisation where overprinting by the later deformation/veining has occurred. As a result of these observations, a new model is emerging that identifies the chronology, structural control and spatial distribution of respective quartz vein types. This is a major advance in terms of exploration targeting, resource modelling and mine planning.

Draw control at Premier Mine is considered important to avoid conditions of isolated draw, which results in early waste ingress, compaction of the kimberlite ore and loss of ore reserves. The Premier Mine kimberlite pipe is unique in that the pipe is cut at a depth of 400 metres below surface by a 75 metre thick gabbro sill. All cave mining at Premier is below the sill and failure to exercise good draw control could cause early ingress of gabbro waste. Gabbro causes problems in the diamond recovery plant and the amount of gabbro sent to the plant needs to be closely monitored. Fortunately coarse gabbro fragments are easy to recognise in drawpoints. It was anticipated that only 85 per cent of available ore would be drawn from the blocks immediately overlain by the gabbro sill before excessive gabbro waste forced the closure of drawpoints. Data on tons drawn per drawpoint and loaded per LHD as well as the tons tipped per pass is gathered by the vehicle monitoring and control (VMAC) system and information recorded by the load-haul-dump (LHD) drivers. Draw control staff monitor drawpoints on a shift basis and record the occurrence, type and height of hang-ups. Information pertaining to the status of the drawpoint in terms of support, waste and availability is also recorded. A database has been compiled that has been used to analyse the overall pattern of draw control, the frequency of occurrence of different types of hang-ups, secondary blasting efficiencies and drawpoint and LHD productivity. The gabbro sill has provided a unique marker horizon that has allowed the arrival of rock from a level 100 metres above the production level to be recognised. Data shows that ore migrates extensively towards groups of drawpoints that are heavily drawn with many drawpoints more than 100 per cent drawn before gabbro waste was recognised. This indicates that an accurate mixing algorithm is essential for good draw control. Data on tons drawn, drawpoint availability, productivity and the occurrence of various types of hang-ups has allowed better control of the mining operation and provided data for planning future caves. In the BA5 mining block a drawpoint spacing of 22 metres, horizontally across the major apex, has still allowed drawpoints to be pulled to waste with no loss of ore. In the BB1E mining block the drawpoint spacing has been increased to 23 metres and no problems have been experienced to-date. Future initiatives centre on improving the data gathering integrity of the vehicle monitoring and control system and a linear programme that will optimise draw control and productivity.

Raise boring is a critical aspect of mining at Xstrata Copper’s Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO). MICO’s internal raise boring department regularly develops ventilation rises, orepasses and stope cut-off rises and reams approximately 2500 m per annum. Developed, trialled and implemented as standard practice over the past two years, procedural changes in constructing the raise bore machine’s foundations have significantly reduced operator exposure to raise boring’s inherent risks of working around open holes and manual handling. An additional cost benefit of this newly-adopted procedure is derived from reducing the likelihood of damaging the machine while de-rigging.When conforming to standard industry raise boring practices, exposure to an open hole begins when the reamer breaks through the concrete pad and ends when it is removed from the hole – a process which, depending on the size of the hole and the raise boring machine, can take up to three days to complete. Although wearing fall restraint equipment, operators working on and around the raise bore machine during de-rigging are continually exposed to the risk of falling from heights. In contrast, MICO’s newly-developed and successfully-implemented presink raise boring system reduces this exposure to a maximum of four hours, regardless of hole size. Exposure to manual handling hazards is also substantially reduced as the presink procedure eliminates manual placement of a 100 kg drill bit under the machine to commence pilot-hole drilling. Outcomes of implementing the presink System at MICO have been so beneficial that it is now standard procedure for all reaming in excess of 1 m diameters.

The effect of delay time on fragmentation has been discussed for a long period but rarely in a satisfactory and unbiased way. Despite the efforts of many researchers, delay selection for fragmentation improvement or optimisation remains a controversial issue. Large-scale tests have been plagued with scarcity and scatter of observations, while small-scale tests have been associated with boundary effects and energy losses. Theoretical work is often used to produce explanations for available measurements or tries to simplify wave propagation and wave interaction to guide observation and practical work. The present work analyses results obtained from a relatively large number of small-scale experiments in blocks made of grout, and re-analyses results of previous experiments, to conclude on the effect of delay on fragmentation. It is shown that the main contribution of the delay is found in the fragmentation of the larger fragments of the blast, while the small fractions show almost no effect. Samples, where copper liners were used to inhibit penetration of detonation products in the rock mass, showed effect of delay only when short times were used and steady but poor fragmentation when long delays were used. Based on small-scale experiments, it appears that the fragmentation is optimised when a hole fires prior to the radial cracks, produced by the previous hole, reach the free face of the blast. Gas penetration may result in the development of few more fractures that affect the fragmentation of the largest particles of the blast.CITATION:Katsabanis, P D and Omidi, O, 2015. This paper summarises the information about current state of eco-environmental problems, geological disaster and mining waste causing during the process of limestone mining. By comparing the management experiences of limestone mines in other countries, management problems in China have been discussed and improved management options have been proposed here. With the recent rapid development of Chinese steel industry, the world iron ore resources of good quality are depleting rapidly. As a result, iron ore deposits of lower quality have been or are being developed to meet the market demand and are becoming increasingly important to iron and steel companies. As concentrates have advantages of high Fe grade and less harmful impurities, they are ideal sweeteners to maintain sinter grade and quality when high proportions of low-grade ores are used in the sinter blends. However, due to their fine nature, addition of concentrates will inevitably increase the proportion of adhering fines and reduced the proportion of nucleus particles of the sinter blends, which can adversely affect the green bed permeability and sintering productivity. In the present study, lab scale sintering tests were carried out under the conditions similar to the sintering process to examine the effect of concentrates on the high temperature sintering characteristics of sinter blends and the structure and strength of the resultant sinter analogues.

The considerations which led to the decision to_ install discs at the Dampier Pellet Plant of Hamer ley Iron Pty. Ltd. are described. Initial testwork showed that the ore could be ground dry in open circuit to a Blaine index of 2500 cm2/g and that it pelletized readily. The various design criteria including diameter, slope, speed, motor size, depth of sidewall, feed point and water spray location were then determined. Plant performance after commissioning is described including the various problems encountered and the modifications since carried out to overcome them. The main problem was quickly identified as disc feed rate control. Various bin and bin feeder modifications were tried to overcome the effects of the fluidising characteristics of the dry ground ore. Other factors found to affect disc operation are ore size distribution, additives and operator competence.

Ti is an important constituent for steels and superalloys. During the continuous casting process and ElectroSlag Remelting process (ESR), Ti in molten steel and superalloy can have chemical reactions with casting flux and ESR slag containing CaO and CaF2. In order to investigate such exchange reactions, the understanding of the (Ca,Ti//O,F) reciprocal slag system is prerequisite. In the present study, a coupled phase diagram experiment and thermodynamic modelling of the (Ca,Ti//O,F) reciprocal system was performed. In particular, the phase diagram of the CaF2-TiO2 system was experimentally investigated by Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) experiment and quenching experiments followed by Electron Probe MicroAnalysis (EPMA) phase analysis. The Gibbs energy functions of all solid and liquid phases in the (Ca,Ti//O,F) reciprocal system were optimised to reproduce the present data and all available reliable experimental data in literature.

The New Zealand Mines Rescue Brigade was established as a result of the Dobson mine disaster on 3rd December 1926, when 9 men lost their lives. Prior to this, there had been four major disasters in New Zealand coalmines, with a total of 145 fatalities. Only large-scale events such as explosions or major fires were considered reportable. Until and including the Dobson disaster, no mine emergency response facilities or organisation was in place.   Unfortunately, over the next five decades the establishment of a Mines Rescue Service did not mean that disasters involving multiple fatalities ceased. The coal mining industry continued to suffer the consequences of poor mining practice, inadequate or inappropriate monitoring and management, and sometimes complete disregard for the regulatory requirements current at the time.   The role of Mines Rescue has been defined in statute, and regulated by Coal Mines (Mine Management and Safety) Regulations. Currently, the statutory obligations have been under the Mines Rescue Trust Act 1992.   The Mines Rescue Brigade historically, has primarily been a reactive service, with stations and facilities established to train brigadesmen in emergency response procedures, specifically to mobilise in the event of a call-out at any one of the many coalmines operating within each stationÆs area of jurisdiction.   Over the last ten years, this role has changed. The service has adopted a proactive approach to emergency response, and has established a close liaison with all mining and tunnelling operations throughout industry, both underground and surface. The objectives have become emergency prevention focussed, and the service has incorporated a range of theoretical and practical training, simulated exercises, more sophisticated equipment and techniques, and a desire to ensure that emergency response capabilities are not needed, whilst maintaining the traditional and statutory obligation to respond if they are needed.

In a recently completed AMIRA project, 20 samples were searched for gold mineralisation using the automated location facility (ALF) for rare phases on a scanning electron microscope in the CSIRO Division of Mineral Products, Melbourne. The samples were submitted by mining companies in Australia, and Papua New Guinea, and included crushed ore samples, cyclone overflow and underflow products, a flotation concentrate, and 12 tailing samples. Their gold contents ranged from 600 to 0.2 g/t An. Native gold and gold minerals including a gold telluride, gold-silver tellurides, and a gold bismuth mineral, were located in the samples as free grains and associated with other minerals such as pyrite, magnetite, hematite, ankerite, copper sulphides, silicate minerals, and quartz. In the highest grade samples, both micron sized and 200 ¦m grains of gold were found with ALF. It would be difficult to locate such d wide size range of gold in a manual search. Gold mineralisation was located in the tailing samples assaying 0.4 g/t An and higher. In several tailing samples coarse grains of native gold over 40 p.m in size were located. One grain was estimated to have contributed 40 per cent of the gold in the sample. As well as locating gold mineralisation, the ALF examination resulted in the identification of uranium, mercury, and bismuth minerals in the samples. Knowledge of the distribution of these minerals in processing streams could be important in the operation of a concentrator.

Colliery spoil is the major constituent of colliery spoil 'rockpaste' which has been used to infill abandoned limestone mines in the West Midlands of England since the early-1980s. The other constituents of rockpasle are pulverised fuel ash, lime and water. A key property of the rockpaste is its ability to flow within the mine workings over considerable distances before setting. This paper describes the work carried out to identify suitable sites as sources of colliery spoil for making rockpaste and goes onto consider the flow properties of the material and the monitoring methods used on-site. A full-scale trial comprising mulling a 6600 nt' section of an abandoned mine was conducted prior to the mulling of the Littleton Street Mine which had a volume of about 500 000 m'. As well as describing the methods used for monitoring the movement of rockpaste material, a description is also given of a dip-meter developed specifically for the purpose of measuring the level of paste in the mine. This paper shows how a colliery spoil based paste has been successfully rued for infilling abandoned mine workings. The monitoring systems developed for use in the two case studies presented in this paper are now being used extensively for infilling other abandoned mine workings. To-date over I I mines with a total volume exceeding two million cubic metres have been backfilled.

Municipal solid waste of incineration (MSWI) bottom ashes are recycled as aggregates in civil engineering. These heterogeneous materials are composed of crystalline and glassy solid phases which contain trace metals, presenting a potential risk to the environment. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) can provide quantitative chemical information, in particular the localisation of metals at trace level. Unstable glassy phases formed during incineration are present in relatively high proportions. Their analyses suggest a continuum between melilite-bearing glasses and dark glasses enriched in iron with abundant spinel aggregates. These primary glasses are enriched in zinc (~4500 ppm) but depleted in lead (~800 ppm) by comparison with the bulk chemical composition and reference materials. Heterogeneous cementing and encrusting admixtures on coarse grains are studied in a second step. SIMS imaging suggests a superposition of band zones including an intermediate layer enriched in iron oxyhydroxides and a superficial layer with calcium accumulation. A strong spatial association between lead and iron is systematically observed. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) supports these observations by demonstrating that lead co-precipitation within iron oxyhydroxides, or sorption on their surfaces, may be a main containment process in the cementing and encrusting admixtures, whereas lead speciation is globally more complex in MSWI bottom ash.

The thick coal seams of the South Maitland field are the only ones in New South Wales which have been worked extensively to heights beyond 3.8 m (nominal "thin" seam height). Under shallow cover only minor difficulties were experienced in developing first workings but later the widespread occurrence of incidents of spontaneous combustion and the growth of "creeps" extending over large areas gave the field its own peculiar problems. As the mines have driven under deeper cover extreme difficulties in forming development roadways have been experi- enced. Various methods have been adopted in an attempt to overcome the problems of the field.

PT Freeport Indonesia is completing the first underground gyratory crusher excavation at their Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine located in the mountains of Jayawijaya, District of West Papua, Indonesia. DMLZ is an underground block cave mine with an expected output of 80 000?t/d and a scheduled production start in 2015.In order to deliver crushed ore to the mill through the existing conveyor belt, the DMLZ block cave mine will construct two 1000?kW 1.6?×?2.3?m gyratory crushers with their own respective ore flow conveying systems underground. Each crusher is composed of top, middle, and bottom chambers with an ore bin. This system includes a series of high capacity conveyors approximately 5 km in length including transfer stations and support facilities.The development methodology required a combination of lateral development by jumbo drilling machines and vertical development by mechanised raise climbers (MRC) due to the complexity of the chamber design.This paper will discuss the project scope, design and development methodology, ground conditions, innovative survey controls, and the challenges faced due to the remote location.CITATION:Hernandez, E, Kusumohastuti, W and Agustian, I, 2014. "All underground coal mines in Australia are required to develop a Spontaneous CombustionManagement Plan (SCMP). The New South Wales Government has developed a guideline (MDG1006) to assist operations to comply with this requirement. A reference document is alsosupplied with the guideline that describes the type of information that is needed for input to theplan, including identifying possible tests that can be used for propensity assessment. However,there is no clear indication of what program of sampling and testing is suffi cient to provide adefi nitive assessment of spontaneous combustion propensity prior to and during mining. This paper reviews the existing methods available for quantifying spontaneous combustion propensity and discusses the sampling requirements that are needed from exploration to mining. A new, more defi nitive method of spontaneous combustion testing is also presented that benchmarks coal self-heating performance from mine ambient temperature to thermal runaway. Examples of the eff ectiveness of this new test method for identifying and quantifying reactive pyrite in coal as well as quantifying the diff erence between dry and wet season conditions are provided in the paper."

The thin film pressure balance (TFPB) technique was used to measure the kinetics of thinning of single foam films and disjoining pressures in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and electrolyte (NaCl). The results were analysed in view of the Reynolds equation to determine the role of surface forces in film thinning. It was found that film thinning is controlled by surface forces at thicknesses below approximately 200 nm. It was also found that hydrophobic force plays an important role particularly at low SDS and NaCl concentrations. The values of the hydrophobic force constant (K232) estimated from the film thinning experiments were used to predict the disjoining pressure isotherm using the extended DLVO theory, which were found to be in excellent agreement with experiment. The TFPB technique was also used to measure the equilibrium thicknesses (He) of the foam films stabilised by a non-ionic surfactant, n-octanol, in the presence of NaCl. At a given ionic strength, He increased noticeably with increasing octanol concentration at very low concentrations. This observation suggests that hydrophobic force is at its maximum level in the absence of surfactant and decreases with increasing surfactant concentration. The results obtained with the single foam films were used to explain the stability of the three-dimensional foams.

In 1976, The Zinc Corporation Limited Broken Hill set up a plant to re-process a hill of tailing (Mt. Keast) from the original treatment operations. With the likely disappearance of this source of feed in 1985, an investigation was initiated to determine what other feed sources might be available. This involved searching through old records and photographs as well as a subsequent drilling campaign. The paper briefly covers the history of treatment operations and describes, as a result of the information obtained, the likely future sources of feed.

In Australia, current production of rare earth element (REE) minerals, monazite and xenotime, occurs as by-product from titanium-enriched placers and beach sands. Undeveloped REE resources are associated with carbonatites, alkaline igneous rocks, pegmatites, phosphorites, cemented fluvial sandstones, and uranium mineralisations. The REE are held within a range of minerals including silicates, phosphates, a1uminophosphates, carbonates, and oxides. The development of these REE resources may require new processing and extraction methods. The distribution of REE in the currently mined ore minerals, monazite and bastnaesite, does not match that requested by the market. Exploration for new REE resources should be focused on ores with more marketable REE distributions, particularly with heavy REE, neodymium, samarium, europium and yttrium enrichments. Such ores occur within alkaline igneous rocks, in laterites overlying carbonatites and alkaline igneous rocks, and in placers derived from low-grade regional and contact metamorphic sediments. Lateritic REE deposits may be easily and economically mined by shovel in open pits and are unlikely to require extensive crushing and milling. In addition, lateritic REE clay deposits may be processed by simple hydrometallurgicaltreatment mehtods.
