With the advent of Electronic Detonator Systems in the global mining industry, as well as the development of high precision pyrotechnic delays, the measurement and analysis of delay performance (usually measured in terms of dispersion about a batch mean û precision, and the deviation of that mean from the nominal detonation time û accuracy), has become an important issue. Through the non-conventional use of existing Velocity of Detonation (VoD) measurement technology, it has been shown to be feasible to measure the precision and accuracy of delay detonator series connected in the same manner as a typical open pit bench hook up. This paper describes the work undertaken to compare and contrast performance results obtained using a range of instrumentation including High Speed Video (HSV) filming, digital counter timing using a Hewlett Packard Universal Counter and a digital VoD measurement device. The results obtained demonstrated the practical feasibility of using the latter technology in order to obtain relatively large amounts of data in a time-efficient manner, with a precision of better than 0.5 microseconds, if required. The results also confirmed the close statistical agreement obtained between the three forms of performance measurement, therefore permitting the substitution of the VoD measurement technique for the more capital cost intensive HSV technique and the slow, sample-by-sample HP Universal Counter method. Project delivery in our current market is not as efficient as it could be. Industry at large (both client and consultant), is diligently following the engineer, procure, construct, manage (EPCM) or engineer, procure, construct (EPC) delivery models and not necessarily appreciating the underlying principles that make them the effective tools they were to start with. We often misinterpret project management with EPCM and end up with a literal and superficial interpretation instead of the disciplined risk reduction and business value capture exercise it is intended to be. One of these underlying principles is the project team as resource or commodity depending on which perspective we follow. Some of us understand this principle only too well and succumb to the temptation to take advantage of the imbalance in the understanding of EPCM by selling bodies and hours. Value and return on investment do not always come into the equation. The latecomers and aspirants are struggling with this as a barrier of entry into this lucrative market, since as we all know - people as commodity was becoming and still is a scarce resource. Clients are also waking up and asking why 1000 engineers on the floor are better than 100, when engineering design in all aspects of industry, new technology aside, is mature. Why is it that we start with a clean sheet of paper with every project or that neighbours in the same industry segment and location just happen to have completely unique conditions and circumstances that require totally original design (Local conditions aside)? The answers to this question appear when we explore the role of the project team and how it is structured. We will need to investigate team culture and levers for success. Then we will formulate a business case for a team to be able to follow traditional project management practices with EPCM delivery models but yet end up with an alternative look, feel and result. An outcome where more input is not necessarily better and the client and consultant both are aligned with success measured in dollars and a win-win outcome for both parties.

The ores of the Golden Mile exhibit considerable complexity. As a consequence, the operating company, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), considered it important to develop a coherent database of information describing the nature of the many ore lodes in terms of (1) rock properties and mineralogical content, including relative proportions, grain size, associations and deportment of key elements between minerals, (2) the relative behaviour of consituent minerals in various stages of processing and (3) the nature of the final products and key intermediate streams. The paper describes a sequence of metallurgical tests covering comminution, flotation, gravity concentration, leaching and calcining, carried out on three lodes of the Golden Mile. Key samples generated by the testing were subjected to comprehensive size-by-elemental assaying and QEM*SEM mineralogical determinations of sulphide and precious metal associations. Significant differences between lodes were identified, and the impact of these differences on processing is discussed.

The aim with this paper is to discuss experiences from the ongoing research project ‘Attract: A roadmap to attractive, inclusive, and safe mining workplaces’. The project’s aim is to analyse possibilities, effects, and consequences of the green and digital transformation in the Swedish mining industry from workplace, socio-technical and gender equality perspectives. The research project (2022–2025) at Human Work Science at Luleå University of Technology is financed by the strategic innovation program Swedish Mining Innovation (a joint venture by the national research funds Vinnova, Formas and the Swedish Energy Agency). The project includes a multidisciplinary research group of five senior researchers and five PhDstudents and a broad repertoire of methods, eg literature reviews, qualitative interviews with both managers and workers, workplace observations, workshops, surveys, and project seminars where the researchers and the company representatives together analyse the results. One important part of the project is the applied approach where the researchers work together with two mining companies and one subcontractor company. The project has two parallel main subprojects.

Bacterial oxidation technology was successfully applied in a mine site pilot plant for the treatment of refractory gold concentrates. The bacterial culture was proven capable of selectively breaking down the refractory sulphide minerals to release the gold. Gold extractions greater than 90 per cent were possible when oxidised concentrate was leached with cyanide solution. The pilot plant was designed using data scaled up from laboratory testing and sized for transport by standard vehicles. The bacterial culture used to break down the refractory gold-bearing mineral was a natural mixed culture able to withstand temperatures up to 55¦C, thus making the technology particularly suitable for use in Australian and in some North American gold mining regions. The pilot plant was operated at the mine site over a six month period. Performance of the bacterial oxidation technology under site conditions was as predicted from the laboratory testing. It was demonstrated that the culture was robust under normal site condi- tions and that the culture could withstand wide variations in the feed and the operating conditions, while still achieving satisfactory oxidation levels. The technology was able to be utilised by site operators and supervisors with minimum intervention. Design data for a commercial facility was collected for a number of different concentrate samples and a feasibility study completed. Estimated capital and operating cost have been obtained.

This paper presents the findings and analysis of the investigation of effectiveness of thin spray-on liners (TSLs) as a gas management tool in underground coalmines. The project involves spraying TSL on the area surrounding gas drainage holes whereby the TSL acts as a thin membrane decreasing the permeability of the coal. This restricts air migrating through the coal seam and diluting gas from the drainage holes. There are a number of potential benefits from this technique but key points are that gas drainage holes produce gas with higher concentrations of methane. The design and execution of a field trial to investigate the effectiveness of a TSL on purity of in situ methane from gas drainage holes is presented in this report. For eight drainage holes, the results show an average increase in methane purity by 9.14 per cent and a reduction in air contamination by an average 7.93 per cent. Overall methane flow rate decreased by 27.6 L/s; however, flow rates were unreliable due to poor measuring equipment. For most holes, methane purity was not changed significantly; however, certain boreholes were responsible for most of the variation in methane purity. The boreholes showing a dramatic improvement in methane purity were likely those with intersecting cleats covered by the TSL. If the TSL was sprayed over more area, specifically in areas where the cleats are intersecting with holes, it is likely that purity of methane in the drainage holes will increase.CITATION:Tenney, J M, Chalmers, D and Li, Z, 2015. The lunar subsurface, particularly the lava tubes formed by ancient volcanic activity, presents a promising environment for establishing safe and sustainable human habitats on the Moon. Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), widely used for excavating tunnels on Earth, offer a potential solution for developing these subsurface spaces. However, the unique lunar conditions, including extreme temperatures, high vacuum, radiation, and the extraordinary strength and abrasiveness of lunar rocks, necessitate significant adaptations to existing TBM technology. This study investigates the feasibility of utilising TBMs for lunar subsurface exploration and base construction, addressing the challenges posed by the harsh lunar environment. We review previous conceptual designs for lunar TBMs, highlighting their strengths and limitations in addressing these challenges. Additionally, we explore innovative excavation methods, such as microwave-assisted rock weakening and undercutting techniques, to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of lunar TBM operations. By evaluating the geological characteristics of the lunar crust and analysing the potential of lava tubes as launching points for TBM operations, this study provides a comprehensive assessment of the technical requirements and operational considerations for lunar TBM implementation. The findings of this research contribute to the growing body of knowledge on lunar base development and pave the way for future human exploration and utilisation of the Moon’s subsurface resources.

Consolidation Coal Company pioneered the development of the horizontal drilling system and licensed the technology in the U.S. A. and to Du Pont (Australia) for commercial production. This paper discusses the most recent developments in the equipment design, especially the borehole telemetry system, known as the Downhole Drill Monitor (DDM).

"The application of automated sampling techniques can help to provide a representative sample of process fluids and slurries that provide data for controlling process, custody transfer and quality assurance and quality control purposes.The automation of sampling provides a more consistent and reliable sampling process and eliminates many of the human-induced errors. Automated sampling can also provide a higher degree of safety in the plant/processing environment as well as better bottom-line results.Automated, fixed volume samplers can provide a very representative sample by integrating many small ‘grabs’ of sample from a process. Automated samplers can be controlled in a variety of ways to optimise the sampling process, including:cycle ratedwell timetotal volume.Properly selected and applied, an automated sampler can effectively isolate the operator from the process fluid during sampling and, to a great degree, during sample container collection.A variety of materials of construction, including seals, are available to handle demanding mining applications. Two types of low sulphidation epithermal deposits that have different gangue mineralogies and ore shoot geometries are recognised. One has laterally near-continuous ore shoots over a significant vertical interval that consist of quartz, chalcedony, pyrite, minor base metal sulphides and adularia, with electrum. The other type of deposit has discrete near-vertical ore shoots of a lesser vertical extent, that consist of quartz, pyrite, base metal sulphides, sulphosalts, electrum and in their upper parts barite, which are enclosed in veins of earlier quartz. The gold mineralisation in both deposit types is considered to be a co-precipitate of pyrite, with that in the first type of deposit produced by prolonged boiling in an upflow of a hydrothermal system (Upflow Deposits); an example is Waihi in New Zealand. The other type is produced by mixing, a deep water primed for gold deposition by prior limited boiling, with an iron-bearing oxidised condensate of the steam released by the boiling, in an outflow of a hydrothermal system (Outflow Deposits); an example is Thames in New Zealand. Early recognition of these different types of deposits can be used to develop mineralisation models of predictive value on which to focus exploration drilling. Early recognition of an Upflow Deposit promotes an extensive program to delineate the extension of the main ore shoot. In contrast recognition of an Outflow Deposit requires a more intensive approach to find individual ore shoots which, although smaller than those found in Upflow Deposits, may be high-grade, particularly if there is earlier mineralisation present to act as a protore.

Metallurgical accounting is key to the control and production planning process of any mining operation. This is even more crucial for complex operations involving mining, concentration, smelting, refining and marketing. The tracking of multiple metal product and contaminant components through the operation can improve process predictability and inventory management. Appropriate use can be made of æhigh quality dataÆ for strategic reserve utilisation, mining operations, milling operations, etc. This information enables the optimisation of all aspects of the mining and processing operations. This case study discusses a metal balance implementation for WMCÆs Olympic Dam operations; a large integrated mining, concentration and refining operation, which used an existing off the shelf statistical data reconciliation package developed for the oil industry. It was extended to track and balance the metal co-products across the entire integrated mining, mineral processing and refining plant. The key benefits discussed are tight integration with existing data collection systems, formalisation of previously informal processes, and leveraging the development and support available for a widely used package. The project provided a solution for the site metallurgical balance spanning the mine and processing plant. The solution facilitates a bridge between the planning and production worlds, using a common data model across the site.

Coal Mining Land Use on the southern coalfields often preceded other land uses. Over the past century overlying land use has altered significantly, particularly with water supply storage development, road system building, railways, pipelines, electricity reticulation schemes and general urban develop- ment. National Parks were declared over coal bearing lands. Little regard was paid to the coal under the land surface by land developers, Government instrumentalities, central planners and the Metropolitan Water, Sewerage and Drainage Board and others, and little value was placed on this valuable energy source. These bodies derived no benefit from the under- lying mineral. In these circumstances, mine operators and such surface land users were put into adversary roles. Mass sterilisation of coal resources resulted. The loss of reserves continues, although the problem has become better under- stood. An Energy Impact Statement (EIS) submission by all surface land developers has been proposed as a means to justify the impact of the development on the coal reserves Beneath.

PasmincoÆs Century Concentrator in North West Queensland commenced operations in November 1999. The nameplate production capacity of 500 000 tpa of zinc metal production in concentrate was achieved in August 2002. Completion of the production ramp up was successful due to the culmination of a number of initiatives throughout 2001 and 2002. Mine to mill interaction to understand and eliminate head grade related bottlenecks affecting Concentrator production and reduce feed variation. Grinding circuit process development û operating and process control strategies to improve stability and reduce grind size to support zinc recovery. Pumping upgrades to control spillage in ultrafine zinc flotation Low density zinc flotation strategy û to improve silica-sphalerite separation to improve zinc recovery while maintaining acceptable silica in final concentrate. Flotation circuit process development û froth crowders, froth cameras and reagent control strategies to improve primary zinc flotation performance. Review and implementation of longer campaigns between planned shutdowns to improve availability. Team reorganisation û to improve setting and implementation of metallurgical strategies. This paper describes these initiatives and their contribution in achieving the production target. It also notes the ball mill motor failures that delayed the successful achievement of the ramp up, and CenturyÆs response to minimise the production impact. The paper also outlines the capital improvement program that was implemented to improve zinc recovery to design 82.5 per cent recovery once the production rate had been achieved.

The selective adsorption of gold cyanide by the weak base ion exchange resins, PAZ-4* and Duolite A-7*, the neutral polymeric adsorbent, Amberlite XAD7*, and the strong base resins, PAZ-8 and IRA-400+ have been studied in both low and high salinity waters, and performance compared with activated carbon. The selectivity of the neutral polymeric adsorbent and activated carbon for gold decreased in highly saline water, while the selectivity of weak and strong base resins for gold increased in highly saline water. This supports the contention that the adsorption mechanism for neutral polymeric adsorbents and activated carbon is the same. Copyright

Coal Mining machinery has undergone enormous changes in design and complexity of controls in the past 10 years. Specialised, high productivity equipment has been manufactured in Australia, in sufficient volume, to satisfy the local mullet needs.Local manufacturers face greater challenges from overseas competition, as well as increased customer demands to improve machine performance, productivity, quality, reliability and safety. In order to meet these demands now and in the future, it will be necessary to review work practises, and restructure production and quality systems to incorporate the latest principles and philosophies.

The Ok Tedi Project has been planned as a selective mining operation since the Feasibility Study. The nature of the orebody, and the need to 'stage' the infrastructure buildup meant that initially the mill would process gol ore using a leach-CIP process, followed by parallel leaching of gold ore and flotation of copper ore, and finally all flotation of copper ore. Cutoff grades were applied to gold and copper ore of 1.0-1.3 g/t Au and 0.4-0.3% Tot. Cu. Since startup, unpredicted occurrences of sulphide copper and, to a Lesser extent, carbonaceous material, has necessitated significant additional short term drilling (other than at grade boundaries), and shift grade control in the pit to control contaminant levels. Remodelling of the orebody based on the most up to date variography and geological interpretation has had a significant impact on the reserves, and thus the whole project development strategy; necessitating the earlier processing of copper ores, and preflotation of the gold ore.This paper discusses some of these points in detail, and in particular highlights how unforseen geological occurrences coupled with processing restrictions can have significant impacts on ore reserves and the mine development schedule.

Mixers are commonly used for the transfer of oxygen in gas-liquid-solid reactions in minerals processing. The process rate is usually controlled by two steps: gas-liquid mass transfer and reaction kinetics. Some examples are described along with the factors used for analysis of the mass transfer design problem. Typical oxygen rates and appropriate types of aeration systems or mixers are reviewed. The commonly used Rushton turbine has limitations in a number of mineral processes. The development and characteristics of the LIGHTNIN A315 axial flow gas dispersion impeller are described. Some practical examples which highlight its advantages are briefly described.

The refractory industry in New Zealand is small, consisting of two main manufacturers - one at Huntly and the other at Kamo. Together these would have an annual refractory production of about 30 000 tonnes. The industries which use refractories include two steelworks, NewZealand Steel Limited and Pacific Steel Limited, the former is involved in continuous casting from sponge, iron and scrap steel and the latter is involved in ingot teaming from scrap steel and steel billets; One aluminium smelter, cement works, dairy companies, small foundries producing engineering requirements and many other small users. The New Zealand manufacturers produce refractories in thefire brick range, that is up to 50 per cent alumina content (ignited basis), based on indigenous raw materials and in the high alumina range up to 85 per cent alumina content (ignited basis) based on imported bauxites. All of the basic refractories high purity silica and high alumina low alkali refractories and many of the higher grade acid resisting refractories are imported.

Flotation tests were conducted with galena, quartz and with synthetic mixtures of the two, in different ranges of grain size, and with different process parameter variants. Physico-chemical analyses were also carried out on surface energy and on xanthate adsorption on galena with different grain sizes. Reference will also be made to hydrodynamics, interfacial chemistry and the influence exerted by grain size in flotation.
