In surface mining, significant improvements in efficiency can be obtained through greater control over the formation of the muckpile. By tailoring the muckpile shape and its looseness to the requirements of the excavating equipment savings can be rea- lised through increased production, machine life and reduced maintenance. For instance, one open cut coal mine has recently estimated that a 2001o improvement in its front row throw would realise $320,000/year savings in rehandle costs alone. Previously greater throw has been achieved by increasing the powder factor through increased quantity of explosive or by drill- ing a larger number of holes-both at a significant cost penalty. However a recent series of experimental blasts demonstrated that it was possible to achieve a twofold increase in the distance of throw of a single row blast by simply changing delay timing alone. The Nobel Electronic Delay Detonator was used to provide the timing flexibility and control required for a thorough study of the effect of blast timing on heave. Whilst it is well accepted that the front row of a blast dominates the extent of throw, it was also found that the profile of the blast could be significantly altered. To date, the general consensus has been that the muckpile for- mation from a blast is a function of the blast geometry, the rock type, the explosive and the initiation sequence. Typically the geometry, rock type and initiation system have a far greater impact than the explosive type. This has been demonstrated by many high speed film studies. However the extent of influence via initiation has rarely been fully evaluated, owing largely to the limited control offered by conventional detonators.

The City of KalgoorlieBoulder is situated approximately 600 kilometres to the east of Perth, and as the major regional centre of the Eastern Goldfields, supporting a population of approximately 25 000. The formation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines in 1989 brought the existing operating entities adjacent to the city under common ownership and management. The Joint Venturers forming the management company are Homestake Gold of Australia and Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie (a Normandy/Poseidon company).This traditional underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding 40.5 million ounces of gold ore with an average head grade of TEN grams per tonne. Historically the heart of the operation has been the famous Golden We located on the Eastern perimeter of the city, in the area known as Fimiston. The other significant operations that form KCGM are the Mt Percy Open Pit and the Mt Charlotte Underground Operation.

Gold mine production in South America was 247.3 tonnes in 1995 up from 156.4 tonnes ten years earlier in 1986. This represents a 58 per cent increase and amounted to 11 per cent of total world gold mine production. The major countries involved in order of production, were: Brazil (67.4 tonnes), Peru (51.5 tonnes),. Chile (48.5 tonnes), Colombia (24.1 tonnes), Venezuela (17.1 tonnes), Bolivia (16.0 tonnes), Ecuador (9.6 tonnes), Guyana (8.8 tonnes), French Guiana (3.3 tonnes) and Argentina (one tonne). The most dramatic increase was reported in Peru where production increased from 10.9 tonnes in 1986 to 51.5 tonnes in 1995, heavily influenced by the production from Minera Yanacocha which began operations in 1993 and produced 17.2 tonnes in 1995.With the reformation of the mining laws and the introduction of investment incentives in all the South American countries in recent years, dozens of major and junior mining companies began flocking into the area in the early-1990s to conduct exploration. A recent study undertaken in Brazil shows that an average of $240 million per year will be expended in this country during the period 1993 - 2010. Twenty-five per cent of this expenditure is expected to be made on gold exploration. Similar figures for Peru are $220 million total per year with 50 per cent for gold; $170 million per year in Argentina with 25 per cent for gold and $120 million ner year in Chile also with 25 Der cent for gold.

Methane is present in varying degrees in nearly all underground coal mining operations. At mixtures with air near 5-15% it is explosive and consequently since it is not usual for these levels of contamination to be reached in the general body of a mine ventilation system it is not unusual to experience it in specific places. On longwall faces the most used power loader is the shearer machine and because of its general shape, situation and operation it is likely that all the factors which are required to cause a frictional ignition can be present. This paper makes a general appreciation of the causes of these ignitions and methods which are and have been used to control these situations on and around these machines.

Bauxite residue or ‘red mud’ is a by-product of the Bayer Process, the primary process of alumina refining. Due to its high alkalinity and variable composition, its storage and disposal poses high environmental risks to water sources, surrounding ecosystems and human health. The high alkalinity (pH 12–13) is a significant factor in its classification as hazardous waste; to mitigate this, Australian refineries have integrated neutralisation processes into bauxite refining. Both sea water and carbon dioxide neutralisation processes are applicable. Multiple studies have demonstrated pH reduction from 12–13 to 7–10, depending on the method. The key advantages of CO2 neutralisation are that it allows for carbon sequestration and is more effective when utilised as a pre-treatment for recovery of metals, while sea water neutralisation is more established and has been integrated into two Australian refineries. This paper proposes the application of the bacteria Exiguobacterium oxidotolerans for bioleaching of iron from hematite in bauxite residue. The genus Exiguobacterium is characterised by its high levels of adaptability, halotolerance and alkaliphilic nature. E. oxidotolerans is successful at eluting Fe2+ from hematite via reductive dissolution, which complexes with oxalic acid produced during metabolism. This aquatic bacterium presents a novel process pathway for iron elution due to direct interaction of E. oxidotolerans with hematite via the cell membrane and operates within the pH range of neutralised red mud. The proposed mechanism is extracellular electron transfer, a microbial metabolic process where electron transfer is facilitated between bacterial cells and extracellular material. Currently this is being investigated for promotion of seaweed growth in coastal environments as soluble iron aids and fortifies colonies. This has potential downstream applications for cleaner iron and steel production. While theoretical, this paper explores the neutralisation, bioleaching and application of the Fe(II)- and Fe(III)-oxalate complexes formed.

The Great Artesian Basin (GAB) contains one of the largest reserves of fresh water in the world. The volume in storage is enormous, being estimated at nearly 65 000 million megalitres (ML). Development of this resource, dominantly for the pastoral industry, began in the late-1800s and quickly accelerated. With exploitation of the resource, artesian pressures declined almost as rapidly. This loss of head is a result of the total discharge from the basin and much of this discharge is waste of water. The waste through uncontrolled bores and inefficient distribution systems still amounts to about 75 per cent of all discharge. However, the volume in storage has hardly been depleted. The major concern is the effect of withdrawal on artesian pressures. Due to the size of the Basin, the relatively flat gradients and low permeability, the movement of water through the aquifers is extremely slow and independent of recharge. Hence, the normal concepts of sustainable yield (ie discharge should equal recharge) cannot be applied to the Basin as a whole as travel times do not allow for the effect of recharge to be seen away from the outcrop areas within management timeframes. The large volume in storage, though, can provide an extensive buffer to the impacts of temporary water needs. This effect should be considered when assessing the acceptability of fixed life projects such as mines and the extracted volumes from their operations. Identifying a sustainable yield involves balancing the acceptability of the economic, environmental and social costs with the associated discharge and fall in head, to arrive at an acceptable balance.

The present discussion focuses on the developmental directions of eco-restoration of acid mine waste rock dump, by using acid mine waste rock of Shuilong Mountain as an example. Based on the analysis of site factors, the current slope ecological restoration technologies of domestic and international and local practices have been integrated into the eco-restoration of acid mine waste rock in Shuilong Mountain. A set of suitable slope Eco-restoration technologies have been formulated locally for acid mine waste rock of Shuilong Mountain, which include establishing green barrier, implementing ecology buffer zones, selecting suitable plant species and combined seeding and tube-stock planting. Underground mining operations on Kalgoorlie's Golden Mile were suspended in 1976, suffering the combined effects of low gold prices and grades. A subsequent substantial increase in the gold price led to the decision by Kalgoorlie Mining Associates to reopen their mines in 1979. The two shafts selected for access required excessive maintenance. The geological assessment and development parameters prescribed have been successfully used to establish reserves to maintain production at a 390 000 tonnes per annum rate. While ore reserve grade is being maintained from primary stoping sources, supplementary lower grade ore is drawn from remnant pillars and stopes at lower cost.Performance by the workforce has reached levels previously attained and a record tonnage was hoisted in the fourth year after recommencement.Keywords : Golden Mile lodes, geological research, payruns, cut and fill, mill holes, gold price, ore grade, amalgamation.

Morwell Open Cut is a continuous mining operation employing 5 buck- etwheel excavators, I bucket chain excavator and 54 conveyors. The combined bunkering capacity at both client Power Stations represents less than 12 hours maximum coal demand. This creates an extremely dynamic operating environment, which is further complicated with significant variations in both excavating and transportation plant capabilities. To achieve set objectives, including- I adequate reserves, 2 coal supply reliability, 3 cyclic plant maintenance, 4 minimal cost of coal, scheduling of the operation requires constant monitoring and reappraisal. Investigations are in progress to develop a computer based scheduling tool capable of simulating the complex operating environment. A review of computer scheduling packages currently available within the State Electricity Commission of Victoria has found limitations making most unsuitable for the task. The type of package found to be most suited is a knowledge based system ('Expert System')capable of operating within a set of rules defined by the user. Work is proceeding on the development of a knowledge base to test the effectiveness of Personal Computer based `Expert Systems'.

The Fosterville goldfield, situated 25 km east of Bendigo, Victoria was at its peak between 1894-1910 with some 47 600 ounces produced (Figure 1). Since that time intermittent mining and tailings retreatment was undertaken until Bendigo Gold Associates delineated a viable resource and commenced an open cut heap leaching operation in early 1991. Unfortunately they encountered financial difficulties and Perseverance Exploration purchased the mine in April 1992. Perseverance operated a successful heap leach operation nearby Nagambie, 100 km east of Fosterville. Based on its acquired heap leaching experience, Perseverance Exploration was able to instigate operational changes to create a successful small gold heap leach operation. The major change was the using of the original multi-use leach pad as a single-use leach pad. The available data allows for a comparison of the two operating systems.

Problems associated with gas management become more significant as exploitation of coal reserves in the Bowen Basin in Australia becomes deeper. At Oaky North mine, relocation of production from one area of the mine to another with a higher gas content required the use of pre-drainage, post drainage and inertisation techniques to enable production activities to continue largely uninterrupted. Innovative surface to inseam drilling techniques were developed for pre-drainage of reserves close to mine workings and have proven to be largely successful. The gas management techniques adopted and specific experience gained are discussed in this paper.

In sizing of wet coal by the horizontal vibrating screen, screen openings to be used is much restricted, because coal is sticky and its bulk density is little. The electrically heated screen and other various types of screen had been tried to screen raw coal and coal as raw materials at a few mm. However, they failed to realize satisfactory results. On the other hand, fine sizing of coal is requested by many fields. For example, raw coal is desired to be screened at the fine rate, before being fed to the coal preparation control system in order to transport undersizes as unprepared coal particles and to reduce load in coal preparation waste water treatment system.1) Coals fed to the fluidized bed boiler also should be sized at a few mm. Regardless of many requests on fine sizing of coal, it seems that there are many cases to omit the basic screening process, because the screening is very difficult on a industrial scale. Size control as pretreatment of coal as raw materials is presented as one of the basic screening processes. In 1979, Kinki Industrial Co., Ltd. and Nippon Steel Corporation jointly succeeded in developing the vertical centrifugal screen. Closed -circuit crushing system by the use of this screen has operated actually at N.S.C, Hirbhata .Works, and realized the anticipated result. Consequently, this system has established the position as the most basic technology in the coal preparation. 2), 3), 4) This system has been also introduced to Nakayama Steel Works, Ltd. in 1982. This system termed the CPC (Coal Preparation Control) Process has been operated smoothly in both N.S.C. and Nakayama. Reported herein is the practical application of the vertical centrifugal screen termed V3-Separator. (V3 means vertical, versatile and vibration.)

An experimental mining project has been carried out in the Collie Basin to demonstrate the safe operation of total extraction mining techniques in the underground mines of the basin. To achieve this, it was necessary to design and install a means of controlling or removing groundwater so that goafing of the overlying strata could be safely achieved as part of the mining operation. The site chosen for the experiment was a triangular panel adjacent to Western No 6 (WD6) underground mine, which includes the 3 to 4 m thick Wyvern Seam beneath 130 to 180 m of overburden. The test area abuts a major fault on the downdip side. The overburden and underburden sequences include several horizons of permeable sandstones which form major aquifers. Water problems have long been recognized in all underground mines in the Collie Basin, and have previously prevented the successful application of total extraction mining. Following extensive hydrological investigations, dewatering and depressurization systems were designed to dewater the immediate roof aquifers and to depressurize aquifers higher in the sequence and in the floor. This would enable stable roof conditions to develop and controlled goafing to be achieved. The roof dewatering/depressurization procedure involved a combination of in-mine vertical roof drainage holes and conventional dewatering bores constructed from the ground surface above the mining trial area. The dewatering system was installed and operated for 29 months before the commencement of mining. Mining was eventually successfully completed in two trial panels using a retreat Wongawilli extraction system using bridge conveyors and continuous miners. Water inflow into the mine workings was channelled to a constructed sump area at the lowermost corner of the panel and pumped to the surface via vertical sump bores. The dewatering and depressurization measures adopted were successful in permitting the first controlled and systematic total extraction recovery of coal from the Collie Basin. This trial mining exercise demonstrated the potential for increasing substantially the recovery of coal from the Collie Basin, where previously recovery rates of around 30 percent from underground mining were commonplace, using only bord and pillar methods.

Grade maintenance is but one constraint on the problem of how best to blend the ore. Other ore characteristics such as mineralogy, hardness for grinding, and pulp fluidity or density for slurry size classification can be included to explore alternative blending Strategies.

Intorducing the hypothesis that the cause ,òi spontaneous combustion of coal is depending un the accumulation of heat produced by its oxidation, the authors derived the equation expressing the temperature change in a heap i fine coal. To solve the equation, thermal conductivity, specific heat and rate of heat ,eneration of fine coal (-48 mesh) were measured at various temperatures in the range _'0-65¦C. The equation was solved numerically and the volume of fine coal which would ignite spontaneously was estimated as the function of ambient temperature. Using 170 Kg of fine coal, everal experiments for confirmation were conducted. At the ambient temperatures of 60¦C nd 50¦C, coal began to fire spontaneously brut 00 and 110 hours later respectively. The Jacobs Sliding Floor (Floor) is experiencing a surprisingly long competitive life. The first Floor was used on the Camino Tunnel in California in 1960. At that time the Robbins Company had built only seven TBMs, and the future for such machines was considered doubtful by many, as compared to drill and blast methods. This was then, and still is, commonly called the "conventional" method. Robbins' TBM No. 8 was for the Hydro Electricity Commission of Tasmania (HEC) for their Poatina Hydro Project in 1961. In this writer's view, the Poatina experience was the start of successful hard rock boring machines. But, by coincidence, the HEC is using the newest Floor for their King River Hydro project, where driving with the Floor started in July 1986 on the King Tunnel. This paper examines the history and developments in both Floor design and other "conventional" tunnelling equipment, and the site specific conditions that have allowed this old concept to still be competitive in certain select situations. Parametric costing data and some actual progress records are included.

Expanding rock bolts anchor within a rock mass more efficiently than non-expanding varieties. This is of great importance in weak ground conditions, where grouted friction bolts perform less efficiently than in good ground conditions. Filling a Split Set with demolition concrete has been shown to double the load-carrying capacity when compared to conventional use of Split Sets. This report details verification of these results by installing and pull-testing 14 Split Sets of varying grout conditions within in a fault zone. These Expanding Split Sets achieved loads double and triple that of ungrouted and normally grouted conventional Split Sets. A literature review and chemical analysis were conducted to understand the expansion process better. It was found that 20 per cent more calcium is included in expanding cement, which is responsible for its growth. Factors most affecting the expansion process were identified. Furthermore, the expansion rate of a bolt outside a borehole was measured and 6 mm of expansion across its diameter was found. The compressive properties of the cement were compared with other types, due to expanding cement becoming uncohesive after the expansion process is complete. When confined within a Split Set, compression testing demonstrated that this grout is just as strong and rigid as normal grout. Finally, the bolts were tested by shear and it was found that the Expanding Split Set (ESS) has a similar shear capacity to grouted Split Sets, which is 70 per cent higher than that of ungrouted Split Sets. These results enabled the mechanism for improved performance in weak ground conditions to be verified. Expanding grout will expand the Split Set into its borehole of varying diameter and lock it into place, creating increased friction and resistance to pull-out. Comminution Kinetics equations are developed to take into account difference of grindability of mineral components. The equations describing both batch and closed circuit grinding or crushing processes are given. These equations are applied to industrial data to derive comminution kinetic and classification characteristics of the component minerals in a multi-mineral ore. Control strategy based on these concepts is presented.

The depletion of easily mined high-grade ore bodies resulted in the industry having to exploit lower grade, complex resources (Albanese and McGagh, 2011; Darling, 2011; Randolph, 2011). The trend is now towards mining and processing of low-grade and complex ores (Darling, 2011; Yingling, 1990). Variable geological and mineralogical characteristics, and complex mineralogy and texture can result in large variations in metallurgical response and also cause challenges in processing. (Carson, 1995; Lorenzen and Barnard, 2011; Yingling, 1990). Variability and the complex nature of ores are fundamental sources of risk that often cause the greatest economic impact (Dusci et al., 2007; Williams and Richardson, 2004). Hence it is important to effectively characterise these types of ore bodies and assess their processing performance (ie recovery, grade). To enable this, there is a need for the following: (i) characterisation of geological, mineralogical and metallurgical variability in the ore body; (ii) effective selection of drill core with characteristics that represent the range of ores in the entire ore body. Coal mining is recognised globally as a hazardous activity, and as a result operates under high levels of regulatory and public scrutiny while managing a workforce operating in a high-risk environment. Mining companies have developed sophisticated risk assessment procedures, management systems and personnel competency requirements that facilitate the safety and health of employees, and Australia is a world leader in coal mining safety and health.RISKGATE is an Australian Coal Association Research Program funded online platform that delivers broad cross-industry knowledge about current practice in the identification, assessment and management of coal mining risk. Centennial Coal has engaged with the RISKGATE program, managed by the University of Queensland’s Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre, since its inception in 2010, and contributed topic experts to many modules, including underground topics within the geological and geotechnical domain (strata underground, outburst, coal bumps and bursts, and inrush).In 2013, Centennial Coal experienced significant unexpected strata failure at the Mandalong mine without any personal injury or fatality. This paper presents a case study in the application of RISKGATE to management of this unwanted event, the steps that were implemented, the information that was sourced and the contribution that RISKGATE made to the final outcomes.
