The mining industry has developed a comprehensive view of the need to have production personnel well trained in the use and maintenance of mining equipment. A strong commitment from the industry to this view has been instrumental in creating an efficient, profitable and productive industry based on modem production processes, sophisticated equipment and a multi skilled workforce. As the industry continues to develop, and the skills and knowledge needed by productive workers continues to expand, the training processes adopted by the industry will need to develop in parallel, not only making use of the latest advances in learning theories, instructional design and technology, but also using these knew ideas in more efficient ways.

As near-surface underground mines progress deeper, the inevitable question is whether to convert from truck haulage to shaft hoisting. The desire to defer capital expenditure frequently delays investigation of the shaft option, or deferral of a decision to start shaft sinking, unless the shaft option is clearly significantly better than trucking. By the time increasing depth makes trucking uneconomic, there may then be insufficient resource remaining to justify a shaft, and the mine must close. However, had the shaft been built earlier, its lower operating costs would have permitted the mine to continue to greater depths. This paper presents a methodology for investigating the shaft versus trucks decision. As well as the typical analysis of which option is preferable at the time the analysis is conducted, the process presented illustrates how the timing of the decision to sink a shaft is critical. The paper shows how to identify the latest date at which the decision to sink a shaft can be made, after which time the shaft option will not be economic. It also illustrates how to assess the resource that may be required to justify the shaft. Considering this in conjunction with the latest decision date, implications for the companyÆs exploration program are discussed.

The basic aim of mine planning is to design mine layouts and schedules that achieve optimisation of operations, minimum cost and maximum resource recovery. Successful accomplishment of this aim is facilitated by timely and comprehensive rehabilitation planning commencing at the pre-feasibility stage and continuing until the end of mining. Incorporation of a final landfomt design for waste rock dumps in a mine plan requires a prediction of surface stability, which may be achieved through erosion modelling. Erosion prediction models can be placed in two broad categories: soil loss prediction models eg USLE and CREAMS, and geomorphic models such as SIBERIA. A waste rock dump landform design based on selected slope form and grade and drainage systems should be developed as part of planning. A digital terrain model (DTM) of the landfonn should then be produced which can be modelled for long-term erosional stability using pre-determined parameter values. If acceptable standards of stability are not achieved, the landform should be redesigned and remodelled until the desired result is obtained. The planning process incorporating models requires knowledge of spoil or waste rock properties and model parameter values. This information is site specific and can be obtained from drill cores or costeans at the pre-mining stage and from spoil or waste rock during the mining stage. Realistic model parameter values are critical in post-mining landfonn design and can be obtained by several methods, including rainfall simulation, monitoring, geochemical analyses and grain size analysis.

Magnetite ores can be used to produce very high-grade concentrates that are suitable feed for the direct reduction process route but the high sulfur content of some concentrates can cause substantial environmental issues. Processing of high sulfur magnetite ore is therefore increasingly problematic for the industry. Generally, the industry demands a concentrate with <0.05 per cent sulfur and <2 per cent silica. This paper reports the outcomes of a study to produce a concentrate with the requisite low sulfur content from a sulfur-rich magnetite ore. The main findings may be summarised as follows: if the sulfur is present in magnetite as nonmagnetic pyrrhotite or pyrite, it can be beneficiated using magnetic separation and hence, monoclinic pyrrhotite is magnetic and is magnetically recovered with magnetite leading to a concentrate that is too high in sulfur. X-ray diffraction and QEMSCAN analyses revealed that the magnetite concentrate was liberated at P80 30 microns and was associated with maghemite, pyrrhotite (magnetic), carbonates and hematite with very low amounts of chalcopyrite, sphalerite and arsenopyrite. Sulfur removal using flotation was the first stage of investigation and this required flash flotation in the grinding stage followed by column flotation of the initial concentrate to generate the final concentrate. At the same time, it was observed that oxidation of the pyrrhotite had a negative effect on its flotation requiring copper sulfate to activate it. Bioleaching and concentrate leaching were also considered and achieved over 90 per cent sulfur removal but were deemed unsuitable owing to the production of highly reactive wastes and high CAPEX. Reference is made to a number of operating magnetite producers and how they manage the sulfur in feed.

The current economic climate and demand for iron ore has resulted in mine operators being prepared to accept aggressive slope designs and associated failures provided that they can be quantified (ie volume of failure and clean up costs, etc) and incorporated into the mining costs, at a feasibility study level. This has numerous implications for pit slope design/geomechanics. Typically when geotechnical engineers conduct slope stability modelling a single value, usually the average or mean value for model input parameters (ie structural orientations, material properties and hydrological conditions) are chosen. The implications resulting from using a single value for model input parameters will vary depending on how the modeller has chosen the value, ie should the modeller choose a mean value from a log-normal distribution of material strengths an optimistic representation of the stability may eventuate, consequently if the designer decides to conservatively downgrade the values by a nominal factor, a pessimistic representation of slope angles may occur, which would result in excessive stripping and mine development costs. A more realistic and representative way to model the inherent variability of geological/geotechnical conditions would be to do so probabilistically. Whereby the modeller can assess the variability of the geological structure as observed/recorded during the core logging process and a similar approach for the material strength properties. The final model output would be a distribution of factors of safety in relation to overall slope angles, ie probabilities of failure for individual slope angles could be determined. This output (graph) could be modified by the mining engineer to incorporate mining costs as well as clean up costs for the respective slope angles and associated failure volumes, ie probabilities of failure. The author intends to provide a detailed overview of the processes involved in deriving a geotechnical design, ie; starting from the data collection phase (core logging/face mapping), through to the data interpretation and formulation of slope parameters; determining the variability and uncertainties associated with each of the process; ensuring that it is adequately captured in the model input parameters; and how the mining engineer could utilise this information to derive final feasibility study mining costs.

In this paper presented are the criteria used when assessing the harmfulness of shocks affecting the buildings. Those criteria are based on the value of speed or accelerations of building vibrations. Presented is the scale of harmfulness of vibrations of Langefors and Kihlstrom, Bureau of Mines, and SWD contained in the Polish Norm PN-85/B-02170. The parameters of the mining shocks measured by the Lubin coal mine station were compared with the parameters calculated as per the correlations (regression curves). The average acceleration calculated from the correlations for eight measurements is only two per cent higher than the actual one. But the average frequency of vibrations calculated from the correlations for eight measurements is as much as 2.22 times lower than the actual one. In order to analyse whether that takes place in the whole range of the energy of shocks compared were the results of calculations from the correlations for various magnitudes of shocks and various distances from their epicentre with the results of the measurements. From that it follows that only for the shocks of the highest energies the lowering of the frequency of vibrations by two times causes movement from the higher zone of harmfulness to the lower one (for example from the IV to III). In the one-family houses in Lubin there were the damages that are characteristic for not only for the III but also for the IV sphere of harmfulness as per the SWD scale. That should be explained via further research and maybe it would be feasible to draw out a new correlation to determine the frequencies only for high values of energy of shocks and determine the preciseness of the acceleration and frequency correlations used presently.

Two major types of economic secondary iron ores occur in the banded iron formation (BIF)-rich Hamersley Province of the Pilbara, Western Australia:dominant BIF-hosted bedded iron deposits (BID)detrital ore deposits (DID sensu lato), which are mainly hosted in the three province-wide Cenozoic sequences that include coeval non-ore sediments and comprise:a. the major Miocene, fluvial channel iron deposits (CID)b. the lesser Eocene and Pliocene detrital iron deposits (DID sensu stricto).Striking differences exist between the massive CID resources and the much smaller underlying and overlying DID. CID are essentially riverine alluvial ooidal rocks with abundant small fossil wood fragments and variable iron peloids, but with only extremely rare recognisable lithic remnants. The original matrix is typically ramifying layered goethite. Eocene DID are mainly alluvial with minor pisoids, whereas Pliocene–Quaternary DID are dominantly coarse colluvial gravels, both derived from and largely retaining the original textures of BID, hard cap or variably ferruginised surface BIF. The colluvial DID matrix is typically ferroan-aluminous soil, resulting in canga where replaced by goethite, which may be dehydrated to hematite by exposure. The Cenozoic deposits occur in two dominant geomorphological environments: the southern Marra Mamba to Brockman Iron Formation strike valleys containing all three Cenozoic sequences and the much later northern Brockman Iron Formation plateau valleys that include only the Miocene and Pliocene sequences. The Cenozoic detritals formed in different climatic regimes, with an extended dry period forming a prominent province-wide dehydrated carapace on the Eocene DID. The Miocene ‘optimum’ followed with its thick scrub-covered deep regolith that produced the fossil wood-rich CID and was succeeded by the arid cool period of the Oakover limestone/calcrete. A major renewal of exposure and erosion in the Pliocene resulted in the extensive iron gravels of the Pliocene–Quaternary.CITATION:Morris, R C, 2015. Substantial schedule advantages can be made on projects if cross-passage construction can occur at the same time as tunnel boring machine (TBM) operation with little or no impact on TBM logistics. However, this approach can prove difficult to achieve with many of the more cost-effective means of supporting the segmental lining during cross-passage break-out. This paper discusses the constraints and shortcomings of conventional approaches, and describes how a cost-effective solution involving a shotcrete shell and opening constructed inside the segmental lining was designed and constructed to deliver cost and time savings on Seattle University Link contract U220.The paper explains the spatial and schedule constraints on the TBM tunnelling and cross-passage construction, and how a shotcrete solution was arrived at in preference to traditional approaches. As the solution was novel the design had to be robust, and the paper explains how this was achieved through a combination of 3D finite element modelling and closed form solutions. Following a description of the trials to verify that the structure could be demolished post-cross-passage completion, the paper describes how the shell solution was constructed, used and demolished safely to leave the lining surface in a clean and undamaged state fit for tunnel operation.CITATION:Harding, A, Chappell, M, Burdick, M and Krulc, M, 2014. Within 22 months of commencing decline development, the Prominent Hill Ankata Underground Project achieved its full production rate of 1.2 Mt/a.In 2010 construction of the Ankata Underground Project was approved. Decline development commenced in November 2010 and the turnout for the first sublevel was reached by August 2011. The first stoping ore was produced in the first quarter of 2012 and production was successfully ramped up to full production during the third quarter of 2012.Diamond drilling commenced in October 2011 and was conducted concurrently with the underground development. This presented challenges as mining and production targets had to be balanced with underground exploration activities. To achieve production on schedule, without adversely affecting the diamond drilling program and future development, meticulous and adaptive planning techniques were required. This included involvement from engineers, geologists, underground operators and underground diamond drillers.The granularity of these planning techniques allowed the management and prioritisation of development and diamond drilling down to an almost hourly basis. A constant flow of information from drill assay results was fed back into the planning systems. This resulted in a constantly evolving mine plan as the orebody was further refined. The dielectric properties of practically all oxide and sulphide ore minerals are such that they heat rapidly when irradiated with microwaves particularly at the standard frequency of 2450 MHz. The presence of carbon or low rank coal mixed with the minerals still further enhances the heating rate. Amongst the patented technologies being investigated are: (i) the direct reduction of oxides with or without carbon included in the pellets or briquettes; (ii) microwave precursor heating of composites ahead of smelt reduction; (iii) microwave smelting of ore or concentrate mixtures with carbon, sometimes assisted with oxygen. Microwaves appear to stimulate endothermic reduction reactions as readily as they do exothermic oxidation reactions. Being a method of achieving "bulk" heating, composites or columns of ore-char blends rapidly heat throughout rather than from the outside inwards as in conventional heating. The microwaves of themselves do not generate any gas - the only gases to be cleaned are the products of reaction in the composites or blends, plus the products of oxygen smelting. In the case of sulphide composites, depending on the quantity and type of low rank coal or char present, sulphur may be eliminated, and collected, in the elemental form. Furthermore, reactions seem to take place at lower temperatures than in conventional smelting but no doubt at the "points" where actual reactions are taking place the atomic or molecular vibrations are such as to satisfy the laws of thermodynamics. Examples are given of the production of unusual products of smelting sulphide concentrates and also the alloys produced from refractory minerals such as chromite and ilmenite. The techniques have been used to produce products with as wide a range of melting points as relatively pure tin and tungsten-molybdenum alloys. Special equipment is being designed and evaluated for these new fields of pyrometallurgy.

The richer, shallower sapphire deposits of the New England region of New South Wales which have been traditionally mined by the small miner are almost worked out. Larger mining and exploration companies are replacing the small miner and exploring for the primary source of sapphire or lower grade alluvial deposits.Although in recent years considerable exploration effort has been directed at locating the primary source, commercial exploitation of sapphire is still restricted to the working of alluvial deposits.If the Australian industry is to compete against Asian and African producers it must use cost effective exploration, mining, processing and marketing methods.

The Broken River Province, in the northern part of the Tasman Orogen, is divided into the Camel Creek and Graveyard Creek Subprovinces. In the Late Cambrian to Early Ordovician, and again in the Late Ordovician, the northern part of the Tasman Orogen was probably a convergent margin with calc-alkaline volcanism. These episodes may have been separated by a passive phase in which quartz-rich flysch and tholeiitic volcanic rocks were deposited. Subsequently, in the Silurian, the region underwent extension forming a large turbidite basin which included the Camel Creek Subprovince and the Hodgkinson Province to the north. Melange is pervasive in the Camel Creek Subprovince which was folded twice in the Devonian. The melange may be related to thrusting accompanying D1. No rocks younger than Early Devonian have been recognised whereas, in the Hodgkinson Province, deposition continued until the latest Devonian. The Graveyard Creek Subprovince formed adjacent to the Camel Creek Subprovince, probably as a pull-apart basin on stable crust. The deformation history of the Graveyard Creek Subprovince contrasts markedly with that of both the Hodgkinson Province and Camel Creek Subprovince. In the Graveyard Creek Subprovince, melange is only present in Early Ordovician rocks. No major angular unconformities have been recognised in the overlying marine to non-marine sequence, which ranges from Early Silurian to Early Carboniferous. Several hiatuses and a slight angular unconformity, all within the Devonian, may be related to the major events in the Camel Creek Subprovince. A major deformation in the Graveyard Creek Subprovince in the Early Carboniferous had only slight effects in the Camel Creek Subprovince. Movement on the Clarke River Fault was probably an important influence on sedimentation and deformation in the Broken River Province.

The production scheduling of an open pit mine determines the optimal extraction sequencing that significantly impacts a mine’s life as well as net present value. The optimisation of production scheduling of large open pit mines with geological uncertainty is a computationally very intensive process. In this paper, an approximation algorithm is proposed to schedule an open pit mine, where instead of solving the whole problem at once, the production schedule is generated by sequentially solving subproblems. The subgradient method is used to generate the upper bound solution of the Lagrangian relaxed subproblem. If the upper bound relaxed algorithm is not a feasible solution, a mixed integer programming is solved on the generated upper-bound solution. An application at a copper mine with an orebody represented by 16 532 mining blocks is presented using the proposed algorithm. Results show that all constraints are satisfied. The net present values are also calculated and results reveal an 11 per cent higher net present value (NPV) is generated when compared to the NPV generated when the same approach is applied to the deterministic model of the deposit where uncertainty is not accounted for.CITATION:Chatterjee, S, 2014. The aim of a transportation system in an underground mine is to move the rock masses from one location to another in the most preferable manner by minimising the long and short-term operational costs. A continuous improvement of material transportation systems used in mines generates a need for continuous investigation of the current and new underground transportation systems. In an underground mine, an orepass is a common system used to transfer the material to the lower levels. If this system loses the ability to transport or store the necessary material capacities, it would result in production disturbances. In this paper, discrete event simulation (DES) was utilised to analyse the material inflow and outflow of the orepass systems when subjected to the different conditions. The study presented in this paper is based on the Malmberget mine, the second largest underground sublevel caving (SLC) iron ore operation in the world.

Investigations were carried out to understand the effect of liquid viscosity (u = 1 x 10-3 - 5 x 10-&apos; Ns/m2) on the size of primary bubbles formed at high gas injection rates (Q = 100 - 1000 cc/s, U = 0.04 - 0.42 mach) under room temperature conditions using flush tuyere (3 mm diameter) operating vertically upward. Tuyere pressure fluctuations were correlated to the mode of bubble formation by simultaneously filming the bubble and the corresponding tuyere pressure fluctuations displayed on an oscilloscope screen. A simple mathematical treatment is presented to estimate bubble size in viscous liquids. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental measurements.

The transgressive sedimentary sequence of the Notnnea Basin contains rhyolitic lavas and less voluminous mafic and intermediate volcanims of shoshonitic affinities which erupted simultaneously during the late Cretaceous. The shoshonitic volcanism shows a trend from early inafic to younger evolved intermediate lithologies. The rhyolites are consistently calc- alkaline. There is no evidence of &apos;mixing, of, the two magma types. The shoshonitic volcanism is the result of a short-lived subduction event related to sprcadime in the New Caledonia Basin and involved reactivation of an earlier Mesozoic subduction zone.

THE exceptional rainfall characteristic of the West Coast of Tasmania, in conjunction with the rugged topography of the district, has always suggested the utilization of water-power, and from the earliest days of the Mount Lyell Company theeventual installation of a hydro-electric power scheme, making use of some near-lying lake, has constantly been kept in view. At the period of the inception of the company, however, the time was not ripe for such an undertaking, and it is only oflate that the various important considerations involved have sanctioned incun;ing the heavy expenditure necessary, with the positive assurance of permanently reaping the benefits expected. The West Coast of Tasmania contains many lakes of varioussites; situated at high levels, and, although the catchments of these lakes are not very extensive, still, the excessive rainfall is so constant over long periods that its regularity may be relied on as offsetting the limited catchments. The explanation of the abnormal rainfall is simply the circumstance that the West Coast Range forms the first high land barrier which is met by the moisture-laden westerly and north-westerly winds blowing off the Southern Ocean. By the time the clouds strike the mountains they ride very low, consequently the elevation of the range, the peaks of which do not exceed 3000 to 4000 ft. above the sea, is sufficient to cause a copious precipitation. Lake Margaret, which is situated five miles north of the reduction works, was first recognized as a possible source of waterpower by Mr. Hugh Ohrisp, a surveyor, who visited it about 1893-4. Some developments in copper, lead and zinc extractive metallurgy which have gone in to production or seem to be close to production scale are described with emphasis on why these innovations have been adopted.Mineral processing operations are now using: automated quantitative mineralogy,high capacity fine crushing equipment, ò fine grinding equipment, andcolumn cell flotation.Extractive metallurgy plants are using:ò bath smelting of concentrate at various scales, and ò flash converting of copper.Hydrometallurgical process developments are slower to make a commercial impact. Concerns about ability to handle impurities in the feed and production of saleable by-products are often major hurdles.An expression for the probability of implementing the first example of a new development is presented.

For suitable production planning in an open pit mine, and also to carry out the optimisation process during the mining production cycle, prediction of fragment size distribution is required prior to carrying out the blasting operation. For this purpose, many prediction models, such as empirical models, were presented. The proficiency of these models differs in various conditions and mines. Therefore, in this paper the most important models, including SveDeFo, Kuz-Ram, CZM, Modified Kuz-Ram in 2005, Kuznestsov-Cunningham-Ouchterlony (KCO) and also Gheibie et al, were examined by the information of 20 blasts in Gol-Gohar iron ore mine. Fourteen images were taken on average for each blast. For image processing analysis Split-Desktop software was used. After examination, it was understood that none of the available empirical fragmentation models had presented acceptable performance, except the Kuz-Ram model for magnetite ore, which had somewhat acceptable results. However, this model for blasting patterns in hematite presented unsuitable results. Examination and comparison of two important distribution functions, Rosin-Rammler and Swebrec, were carried out and it was observed that the performance of Swebrec for fines was far better than Rosin-Rammler. Large-scale coal mining in South Wales dates back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries with the birth of ironmaking on an industrial scale. This rapidly gave rise to new and large communities with immigration from far and wide across the United Kingdom (UK). These new communities were largely dependent on coal mining and served as the main form of employment and social cohesion until the industry’s demise in the 1990s. With wholesale mine closure and the concomitant loss of employment, the extensive environmental degradation and chronic mine-related illness left a deep scar on the psyche on many still living in the South Wales mining communities. This coupled with memories of strife in the 1980s has resulted in ongoing hostility toward the surface coal mining of the remaining accessible coal reserves in the proximity of these communities.The purpose of this paper is to set out the historical basis of the concerns of these legacy mining communities in South Wales and explain how they are being positively addressed by both the recently evolved planning and regulation system and by today’s surface mining industry. Reference is made to experience gained from two recent applications for surface coal mining adjacent to former mining communities. Ways are suggested in the approval process that surface mining can work in more harmony with the local communities through working partnerships between the mining company, the authorities and regulators and the affected communities. It is concluded that partnership is key to creating a more responsive mine-operating culture and a means to securing approval for future surface coal-mining prospects in South Wales, and probably elsewhere too.CITATION:Humphries, R N and Thompson, R J K, 2014.
