A number of standard tests are conventionally carried out to characterise strength properties of rock. The values of the parameters obtained are often affected by planes of weakness or defects in rock structure. For the purpose of mine design, the range in values or the class of the strength (obtained from a number of tests) is generally more important than a precise value (obtained from a single or limited number of tests). Research has been conducted to establish a relationship between an indentation index and the strength of the intact rock material from the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. The Tamrock Raise Boring Index (RB-i) test, which is quick and easy to perform, was selected as the indentation test. The results show that, for heterogeneous, strong to very strong rock, there is a good correlation between the indentation index and the uniaxial compressive strength and tensile strength.

Veolia Water Technologies was contracted by a global coal mining company to design a retrofit acid mine drainage treatment facility using DenseSludge™ technology on a former coal refuse disposal site. The project constraint was to reuse current facilities in order to reduce additional capital work cost and avoid additional footprint requirements while improving treatment performance and reducing sludge production and chemical consumption. The initial installation of 454 m3/h served as a pilot plant to demonstrate the benefits of the process and ultimately provided design criteria for the new facility. The pilot demonstrated the benefit of the technology by reducing sludge volume by 90 per cent compared to conventional processes currently in use. The sludge that is reinjected into the mine contains less water, which reduces the volume of water that returns to the mine pool for treatment and mine water balance. Furthermore, the pilot plant reduced lime usage compared to conventional processes by operating at a lower pH set point, demonstrating steady pH control and stoichiometric lime utilisation.CITATION:Dube, C and Banerjee, K, 2015. Material characterisation, ore sequencing and process capability are commonly regarded as the key parameters to consider in designing and operating an effective pit to plant supply chain. Therefore, an understanding of rock mass properties is the starting point for controlling the presentation of problematic material to the ore handling plant and optimising process utilisation. There are different methodologies for characterising problematic material and ore handleability which exist across a spectrum of sophistication. At one end of this spectrum are simple indices built using first principles geology and at the other are complex algorithms developed using advanced analytical methods, machine learning and ore traceability. Regardless of the method, without an integrated process for careful management of problematic ore, material handling delays (ie blocked, bridged, blinded and buried events) will interrupt the stable flow of production. The ability of the ore control geologist to mitigate these delays is central to the ore handleability challenge. This paper describes a quick and easy solution that links the presentation of ore to the operating window at the crusher. This operating window is based on material characterisation, using the physical, textural and mechanical properties of the rock mass, and crusher performance. It also describes how a basic problematic ore index (POI) can be developed using ore tracking to the production face, petrographic studies of ore texture and mineralogy, and existing variables in the geological model. Finally, this paper will demonstrate that by coding the POI into the geological model for mine planning, together with performance monitoring through compliance to plan routines, material handling delays at the crusher can be reduced, unlocking significant resource value.

This paper describes the principle of cut-and-break rock excavation, in which rock is first undercut, and the undercut material is subsequently broken free by a wedging action. The current work on cut-and-break using the large rock cutting test rig at the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) is outlined, and suggestions are made as to the potential advantages of cut-and-break roadheading, particularly in excavating short tunnels in hard rock in an urban environment.

Segment and gasket lining in tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnels; and sheet membrane lining systems in driven tunnels are robust waterproofing systems each with a proven history of performance in Australia and further afield. Where an interface between these two systems occurs, the potential for costly failures is vastly increased and additional attention to detail is required in design, planning and construction. TBM cross-passages represent the most common occurrence of this interface, with steel compression flanges and neoprene gaskets being the typical means of connecting the waterproofing systems. There is a large variance in both detailing these flanges and associated outcomes, which makes this an area where there is room for improvement within the industry.The paper will look to tease out the various issues associated with this interface and how they can be dealt with efficiently with appropriate design measures, robust planning and carefully controlled construction methods.The paper will also look to review the new technologies and systems currently being put forward as potential alternatives, including an epoxy tape system, which has recently been successfully trialled on a project in Europe under high-pressure head.CITATION:O’Dwyer, E P, 2014. Spiral concentrator is one of the most commonly used gravity concentration devices in mineral processing. The particles are classified based on their specific gravity and size. The present work analyses the experimental and numerical investigations of the water flow field, such as fluid depth and free surface primary velocity of two high gravity spiral concentrators at different flow rates. The measurement techniques use a flow depth gauge and flow visualisation technique adapting lycopodium powder as the tracer. Flow features in terms of liquid depth and primary velocity at the free surface of the flow are captured across the trough in two different high gravity spirals. A highspeed motion camera with an imaging frequency of 5400 frames per second and 768 × 768 pixel resolution is utilised to track the tracer particles in the liquid flow on the dark surface background. Further, the two-phase flow is studied numerically on high gravity spirals based on the volume of fluid (VOF) approach utilising the RNG k-ε model and Reynolds Stress Model (RSM) for predicting the fluid flow on trough surfaces such as water depth and free surface primary velocity. The CFD predictions of the flow field for the two spirals are attempted to validate against experimental data. The high gravity spiral concentrators show lower flow depths and free surface primary velocities but steep velocities on the outer trough zone compared to that of low gravity spiral concentrators (conventional coal spirals). Among the computationally tested high gravity spirals, higher pitch and higher secondary slope design shows greater flow characteristics.

Underlying the 15 million tonne, high grade Hellyer volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit of western Tasmania is an extensive, well developed, and well preserved stringer system. Pervasive alteration of the footwall mafic volcanics occurred as the hydrothermal system initiated. Mineralogical zoning exists within the footwall alteration pipe, with a central siliceous core giving way to zones of chlorite, chlorite-carbonate, sericite-chlorite, and finally sericite-quartz on the margins (stringer envelope zone). However, the alteration morphology and zonation is not symmetrical around the central siliceous core; eastward the alteration zones are steeply dipping and terminate abruptly under the massive sulphide, while westward they extend out under the ore body in a blanket fashion. Geologic evidence indicates that the pervasive alteration started with the development of sericite-quartz which was subsequently overprinted by chlorite and finally quartz-sericite as the hydrothermal system became focused towards the centre of the stringer system.

A series of low shock energy water resistant emlulsion based explosives have been developed by combining inert materials, such as Perlite P500, into the formulation. The material handling, water resistance and explosive properties of these mixtures were determined as a function of inert additive type, density, charge diameter and emulsion base. Of the emulsion bases tested Emulite produced the best and most stable low density mixtures ranging in density from 0.8 to 1.35 g/cm3 producing velocity of detonations (unconfined) ranging from 3000 to 5500 nits. The mixtures could be detonated successfully at these densities at diameters as low as 25mm. Low shock mixtures formed by combining Emulite with Perlite P500 were successfully trailed at the Cadjebut zinc mine in Western Australia. The performance of the explosive, at three densities, was monitored using both continuous and point to point VOD techniques. The fragmentation produced by the blasts were compared by photographic analysis. During this trial the low shock emulsion mixtures were shown to be as effective as the currently used explosives (packaged emulsion) at a significantly reduced cost.

This paper addresses the problem of prediction of grade variables over volumes (block estimation) for an autonomous mine. Resource estimation is usually concerned with the prediction of the quality of material over volumes (blocks in resource models). This problem is tackled by developing Bayesian block estimation with the Gaussian processes (GPs) framework. GPs are commonly used for nonparametric regression and classification and offer an elegant solution to deal with incomplete knowledge and information. A GP is defined by its mean and covariance function. The parameters of the covariance function can be learnt by maximising the marginal likelihood of the data. This offers a way of automating the covariance fitting process, while at the same time allowing for an assessment of how well the covariance function fits the data. Within the GP framework the calculation of the average grade over a volume can be performed using Bayesian quadrature, which treats an integral as a random variable. First, it is demonstrated that the block kriging equations in geostatistics are the same as Bayesian quadrature. Then, it is determined when closed form analytical solutions for the integrals are possible and quadrature approaches for approximations are briefly discussed.

Energy is central to respond to critical stakes on human and industrial development requirements as well as on climate change. The increase of the share of carbon-free energy sources in the global supply mix will help to reduce significantly greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) as power generation accounts currently for 41 per cent of these emissions from the energy sector. In this energetic mix, nuclear and renewable energies are complementary, the first more focused in the baseload power generation whilst the second is well suited for decentralised power generation. In this context, AREVA's goal is to enable everyone to have access to a cleaner, safer and more economical energy. Regarding nuclear energy, AREVA's strategy is to capitalise on its integrated operation model, which groups together fuel cycle and nuclear power plant construction, aiming at building one third of the new nuclear capacities and securing the fuel cycle supply chain for its existing and future customers. Therefore, the front end of the uranium fuel cycle, from mining to the fabrication of fuel assemblies, has a key role in the sustainability of the nuclear industry. The replacement of the current capacity and the entrance of new countries on the nuclear power generation might lead to a significant rise of uranium demand by 2020. In order to be prepared in time, AREVA defined an ambitious industrial program to expand mineral reserves, increase the production of uranium concentrates, replace the conversion capacity, build two new uranium enrichment plants, one in France and one in the United States and upgrade its fuel manufacturing plants. To support the front-end industrial activities in the short and long term, AREVA invests on a portfolio of R&D projects to find out solutions to meet customers' needs, to improve its competitiveness and to develop new concepts and solutions to anticipate future market evolutions. In particular, some important technological challenges in mining must be surmounted to develop cost-effective methods to explore and exploit low grade deposits while creating sustainable solutions for reducing reagent, water and energy consumptions. In this lecture, an overview of the industrial investments of AREVA in the front end of the uranium fuel cycle and some highlights on its R&D major axis will be presented. This is an abstract only. Himalayan ranges on the northern border of India are source of many perennial rivers and suitable sites for large dams have been located therein. However, Himalayas are young mountains and comprise of comparatively weaker rocks having adverse geological features like shear seams, thrust zones, minor and major faults and intense jointing. Tehri dam project under construction, is located in lower Himalayas. It envisages construction of a 260.5 m high earth and rock fill dam and an underground power station of 2000 MW (Eight machines of 250 MW each, four of which will be reversible) installed capacity. This dam will be the highest and the underground complex will be the largest to be constructed in India in the Himalayas. The under- ground complex comprises of 25 km of tunnels varying in diameter from 6 m to 11 m and seven large cavities of various sizes, the biggest being 22 m in width, 194 m in length and 65 m in height. Rock formation in the power house complex belong to phyllites having various joint sets spaced from 0.5 m to 3 m. Due to the poor geological conditions and closely spaced net work of large cavities, the planning, analysis and design of the cavities is a challenging job. Many aspects have to be considered in determining the sizes, locations and orientations of the various cavities taking into account the properties and jointing pattern of rock mass, functional requirements and economics. Correct evaluation of loads and forces is necessary for economical design of supporting system for the various cavities. Rock loads on the roof of cavities and their supporting system will be assessed with the help of the latest methods. The stability of the rock mass around the cavity will be evaluated by elasto- plastic method using finite or boundary element techniques. A scheme of field investigations, laboratory tests and instrumentation for deter- mining rock properties in preconstruction stage and for monitoring behaviour of the underground cavities during and after construction is envisaged.

Structural geological modelling is a process which results in a 3D computer model that represents the essence of the geological and structural understanding of an area and is presented in a way that is directly useable, typically by internal customer groups. BHP Iron Ore operates a number of open cut iron ore mines in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia. The largest mine is the Mt Whaleback Mine located at Newman close to the southern margin of the Pilbara Craton. The structurally complex Mt Whaleback Mine is the largest metalliferous single pit open cut mine in Australia with over 1.6 billion tonnes of original iron ore resource. Additional to the Mt Whaleback Mine, a number of satellite open cut iron ore mines are operated by BHP Iron Ore (BHPIO) in the Newman area. BHPIO also operates the Yarrie mine approximately 400 km north of Newman at the northern edge of the Pilbara Craton Most of the BHPIO mines are located in the Archean- Proterozoic Hamersley Province that overlies the Archean granite-greenstone terrain of the Pilbara Craton. The orebodies are considered to be the result of supergene enrichment of the approximately 2.5 Ga Brockman Iron Formation and the slightly older Marra Mamba Iron Formation. Folding represents the most prevalent and penetrative structural element in the Newman area. Four folding phases have been identified regionally (Fj, F2, F3, F5), while a more local folding deformation (F4) developed mainly in the Mt Whaleback and Orebody 29 mine area. A northeast trending, southeast dipping, 45 km long, high angle, normal fault zone, the Whaleback Fault Zone, cuts through the Mt Whaleback mine resulting in an approximately 1400 in gap in stratigraphy. Additionally, two large, low angle, normal faults, the East Footwall Fault and the Central Fault, are present at the Mt Whaleback Mine. During the formation of supergene orebodies, up to 40 - 45 per cent volume loss occurred resulting in local non-tectonic deformation in the orebodies.

The resurgence of silicosis and coal worker’s pneumoconiosis (CWP) in mining and the recent ban of engineered stone products underscore the need to comprehensively address mineral dust exposures and the associated health hazards. Worker exposure to particulate matter, remains a pressing concern demanding nuanced exploration as all dusts are not created equal. The established link between silica and respiratory diseases necessitates a more detailed understanding of the characterisation of particulates and their health impacts. While current monitoring relies on total mass, it is increasingly evident that the size, shape, mineralogy and agglomeration of particles play a crucial role in determining health impacts. This has been evident in the engineered stone industry with workers not only facing a greater risk of silicosis, but also seeing a faster progression of the disease and a higher likelihood of dying from it. Simultaneously, the surging demand for critical minerals, integral to low-carbon economies, has seen government and industry fast tracking the exploration, mining and processing of these commodities. Critical minerals, crucial in technologies like lithium-ion batteries and high-performance alloys, are central to achieving global environmental goals. Significant funding is currently being allocated to advance the development and processing of these materials, however there remains a considerable gap in understanding potential health risks, urging comprehensive health risk assessments. To tackle these challenges, the University of Queensland has developed innovative dust characterisation methodologies, including the use of the Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA), a scanning electron microscope, to characterise respirable and inhalable dust samples. This advanced technique, initially applied in coal and metals mining, is expanding to critical minerals mining, unravelling diverse mineralogical components and particle size distributions. This conference presentation will showcase the latest research, emphasising the use of advanced analytical techniques to deepen our understanding of the size, shape and mineralogical composition of particulate matter. By synergising insights from coalmines, metals mines, smelters, engineered stone and critical minerals assessments, we aim to proactively manage health risks, contributing to safer workplaces and responsible production practices in the mining sector.

This paper is based on a case study from a mine site that operates two gyratory primary crushers. These crushers were encountering problems, which included inconsistent P80, reduced liner life tonnage and, on some occasions, catastrophic failure of the liners.As part of an evaluation process, both crushers were ‘mapped’ using a technology for condition monitoring and modelling of the crusher’s wear components. The technology provides comprehensive coverage of the crusher’s concaves and mantle at 100 mm intervals. It also automatically assesses wear rate between inspections and determines the highest wear areas. Outcomes include projected optimum reline dates at target replacement thicknesses, the identification of asymmetrical wear patterns, and the accurate measurement of open and closed (OSS/CSS) side settings.A comprehensive study was performed to optimise the performance of both these crushers at site. Over a period of seven liner service lives, the strategies to improved performance included liner analysis (concaves and mantle profile analysis), tonnes per day (t/d) and tonnes per hour (t/h) analysis, mantle reutilisation, detection and control of loose concaves, and detection and control of uneven wear and hot spots.These strategies resulted in the improved mechanical and operational performance of both crushers through concave and mantle redesign, OSS/CSS control, accurate wear forecasting plus other initiatives.As a result of these initiatives, the site now experiences benefits which include consistent product size, increased tonnes per hour (t/h) for both crushers and the liner life tonnage has doubled.
