Research conducted into backfill drainage at Mount Isa Mines since 1992 is described. Piping in draining backfilled scopes has been the primary cause of bulkhead failures and emphasis is placed on research into the piping mechanism. Laboratory and in situ tests aimed at understanding the piping mechanism have been conducted and the results are presented. A case history of piping in a draining bench scope fill mass is described and a technique for reducing the potential for bulkhead failures in hench stopes is presented. Hydraulic fill is produced by standard cycloning of tailings and the overflow (reject material) is sent to thickeners prior to placement in the tailings dams. Research into the partial introduction of thickener underflow into the backfill system and its influence on backfill drainage is also descrihed.

Discontinuities often have a very detrimental effect on the stability of mine highwall faces. The west wall of the Muja open cut is remarkable for the number and variety of discontinuity sets which occur over a relatively small area. To-date 14 separate structural domains have been identified over an area measuring approximately 560 m by 120 m.The structural domains have been grouped into four structural assemblages on the basis of their angular relationships to each other and to regional folding and faulting. The distribution of these structural assemblages appears to be erratic and no controlling factors have been identified to explain or predict them other than in the most generalised terms.

The hoisting system at the Newcrest Telfer mine is designed for a final duty of 7.35 million tonnes per annum at a hoisting distance of 1450 m. In terms of hoisting capacity (t/h) times hoisting distance it is one of the largest friction hoist installations. Initially, the hoist will be equipped for hoisting 6.5 Mtpa from 1100 m depth. This new drive technology is now well proven by ABB for mine hoist applications with the first installation in commercial operation since July 2001. To date 17 systems for medium voltage drives and another five for low voltage drives have been purchased from ABB for mine hoists. This paper will also deal with skip design and powerful data loggers with diagnostics for local and remote monitoring that are installed in the Telfer mine hoist.

The application of new and currently practised mining techniques in new areas and at greater depths necessitates considerable and immediate research effort. This effort is aimed at identifying the factors which make a particular method suitable and economically viable in a given geological, structural and operational environment. These factors, together with greatly enhanced knowledge of a deposit at the exploration and planning stage, allow selection of the most appropriate and efficient mining method in a new area such that coal resource recovery is maximised in a cost effective manner. Current research and future requirements for research into mining methods and associated equipment and mine services are reviewed.

A reliable scale-up procedure for column flotation must address three important areas of column design, ie column geometry, sparging system and wash water distribution network. The column geometry is dictated by the maximum froth carrying capacity (which determines column diameter) and the bubble-particle attachment rate and particle retention time (which determines column length). The most important factor in the scale-up of an air sparging system is the ability to produce small bubbles in both laboratory and full-scale columns. Other factors, such as energy consumption and maintenance requirements, should also be considered in the scale-up of bubble generators. It is also important to design a wash water distribution system that can properly control the froth stability and maximise the column throughput. Based on these criteria, a successful scale-up example is given.

OWING to two large falls of ground which resulted in serious accidents occurring towards the end of 1908, it became evident that the "open chamber" system then in use was unsuitable for the conditions existing in the Mount Morgan mine. It will be admitted that in all mining operations the first consideration is the economy of the system adopted, combined with its safety and ability to give the desired output. A sectional system with square sets has been introduced into the mine, in which due attention has been paid to these factors. In this paper a brief description of this system will be given. An outline of those previously used will be included, as it is necessary to understand the conditions which existed in the mine at the initiation of the sectional system. Outside the actual mining methods employed, various points that might prove of interest will be touched on.The square set system of mining has been in use throughout, the stopes in the gold ore in the upper levels of the mine since underground operations were started in Mount Morgan. In the oxidized zone the ore was of a friable nature, and in some cases rImning ground was encountered. In the lower levels the ground became heavier, and although the stopes were for the most part long, wide, high, and irregular, and not sectionalized, no difficulty was experienced in winning the ore, and no accident of a serious...

The Chiria Iron Ore deposit falls within the well-known Horse-shoe-shaped Singhbhum-Bonai-Keonjhar belt in India, where most of the deposits supplying ore to various steel works of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO) are located. With an estimated reserve of about 2000 million tonnes of ore (at 55 per cent Fe cut-off) spread over four contiguous blocks, it is the largest iron ore deposit in India and one of the largest in world. The present study is confined to only one of the four blocks of Chiria viz North Block, comprising an area of 2.11 km2. `Corporate Plan 2005' of SAIL envisages development of a large open cast mine at Chiria to meet its enhanced requirement of iron ore by 2001-02 AD.

As more and more mining operations around the world either switch to, or trial, electronic initiation systems, the breadth of knowledge and experience regarding their effective application has widened considerably.In South America, for example, there is a strong perception that in order to achieve the finest possible fragmentation, very short electronic delays must be used between successive holes within a row. Limited field studies involving measurement of fragmentation have been conducted to support that paradigm and there are few long term studies which have been strongly supported by measurements of productivity either in the pit, in the plant, or in the leaching pads.On the other hand, some well documented studies have been conducted in North America, showing not only the impact of delay timing on fragmentation but also the effect on semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill productivity over extended periods of in excess of 12 months. To date, those studies suggest that optimum timing is considerably longer than the times commonly used in South America.This paper explores the current knowledge of the effects of delay timing on issues ranging from size distribution to vibration impacts in pit walls, to vibration and overpressure impacts in surrounding communities. It also explores how fragmentation modelling can be adapted to reflect fragmentation trends that have been reported in various technical conferences around the world.

Paste fill has been used successfully at Henty Gold Mine for the past five years. It has allowed 100 per cent extraction of the orebody, stabilised poor ground and enabled wide sections and offsets to be mined safely. However, there are a number of inefficiencies in the current paste fill system. These include the low output from the drum filter, the addition of aggregate to the paste to compensate and the trucking of paste from the plant to the portal. These inefficiencies have increased the operating cost of the paste fill system and caused a number of operational challenges such as blockages and increased pipe wear. These challenges have been partly overcome by taking ownership of the paste fill process, improved quality control and better communication. Henty is currently developing two new orebodies, the Mt Julia and the Darwin and has an opportunity to build an efficient paste fill operation. This is likely to be a high density paste system without aggregate, either located above the new orebodies or located at the plant and pumped to the new site.

Gwalia Consolidated Ltd has been in the mining industry for about 15 years, yet its key wholly owned Greenbushes Mine has a history dating back to the last century. Similarly Gwalia Consolidated's associate, Sons of Gwalia Ltd owns the historic Sons of Gwalia and Marvel Loch Mines with Sons of Gwalia celebrating its centenary this year. This durability is a testament to the quality of the orebodies concerned and the massive technological achievements over this time which have enabled each of these mines to maintain their competitiveness. While Sons of Gwalia and Marvel Loch were and continue to be gold mines, the wholly owned Greenbushes Mine has survived and in fact prospered through the development of alternative products from its rich and unique pegmatite. Similarly, for Gwalia Consolidated to grow and prosper it will be necessary to expand the current portfolio of products and operations. The Greenbushes Mine has already given Gwalia world `No 1' status in both the supply of primary tantalite concentrates and lithium minerals (spodumene). The asset base contributed by Gwalia's gold investments assisted in the recapitalisation of the Greenbushes assets to fully develop their potential. Industrial minerals and strategic metals were of interest to Gwalia as these markets are relatively small and it is possible to develop an influential if not dominant position in the market with a quality asset. Capital expenditure to develop such projects are also usually in the order of $10 m to $20 m, a manageable range relative to Gwalia's size.

The volumetric method of estimating hydrocarbon resources and recoverable reserves is and probably will remain a dominant method in petroleum engineering. The method is technically very simple, but has one main problem: how to express, measure and properly handle the variable and complex uncertainty of each estimate. The computer age brought in the Monte Carlo Simulation method which enables correct arithmetic operation using data with specified probability distribution. However, several problems are still not solved uniquely and still exist. For instance, the determination and description of the distribution of single parameters, the determination of the degree of dependency between parameters (e.g. hydrocarbon saturation-porosity), and standard probabilist- ic definition of generally used categories (e.g. proved, probable, possible). Methods for handling these problems are discussed.

The intention of this paper is to examine the practical and technical aspects associated with the measurement of blasting related phenomena. The emphasis is directed towards the acquisition of quantitative data rather than its theoretical interpretation. The application of advanced technologies will require that many more people involved with blasting become familiar with this topic. Against the many other disciplines where measurement may be beneficial, blasting is peculiar on several counts. 1) It must almost always be carried out in the field, and very often in a production environment. 2) Much consideration must be given for the safety of personnel and equipment. 3) The process is dynamic and seldom repeatable. Because the blast process is so dynamic there is little opportunity for direct examination. For this reason measurements are almost universally made using electronic techniques. In this way the event can be captured faithfully as it occurs and later examined in detail, after the fact. It is obvious that some familiarity with these electronic techniques is a necessary ingredient for successful blast monitoring.

A critical appraisal of the wide variety of processes used in the pyrometallurgical production of metals and non-metals shows that there is a strong physico-chemical and, in particular thermodynamic, basis for the variety. Based on this, a simple classif- ication scheme has been developed which makes it possible to understand the methods for extracting individual metals and non-metals pyrometallurgically and to assess which are the more attractive routes. The analysis presented shows why there are essentially two broad routes for pyrometallurgical production of metals and non-metals; viz., the reduce- refine and the refine-reduce routes. Halides have the role in pyrometall- urgical processing of producing pure compounds for subsequent reduction. The criteria which determine the selection of reduction method for oxide raw materials and intermediate halides (e.g., use of carbon, hydrogen, a more reactive metal or electrowinning) are examined critically in the paper. The treatment of sulfide raw materials is considered also, particularly the criterion for smelting sulfides directly to the metal.

I he Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company (ER&S) has oper- ated a copper smelter at Port Kembla, NSW since 1908. The feasibility of modernising the smelter was recently studied and external influences were shown to have a substantial impact on the project economics. Profita- bility is determined by the relative magnitudes of treatment charge income earned from processing raw materials and the operating costs incurred. Treatment charges are usually denominated in U.S. dollars and are deter- mined by market forces in the world copper industry. ER&S is no different from other Australian manufacturing industries in that it must maintain its competitive position by controlling costs. The modernisation project seeks to achieve this through new technology and improved labour Productivity.

The Blue Cube Mineral Quantifier Inline (MQi) instrument uses reflective light spectroscopy and advanced chemometrics to measure mineral or elemental grade in a slurry line. The instrument takes scans continuously and sends data to the DCS or PLC control system.Controlling the concentrate grades on a flotation circuit using low-frequency measurements can be difficult or impossible, especially on a circuit that has fast process dynamics. The ability to rapidly measure changes in grade makes it possible to continuously manipulate the flotation circuit operating parameters such as level, airflow and reagent addition set points to optimise plant performance throughout changing conditions.At Barrick’s Porgera mine in Papua New Guinea the flotation circuit feeds sulfide concentrate slurry to a pressure oxidation circuit. In order to maximise gold recovery in the flotation plant and increase performance in the pressure oxidation process, there is a stringent requirement to maintain a stable and optimum sulfur grade. The gold recovery is directly affected by the sulfur grade as most of the gold at Porgera is submicroscopic and associated with the sulfides (disseminated?pyrite).Porgera considered various points in the flotation circuit for installing Blue Cube analysers. This was part of a plant upgrade to improve process control. Due to budget constraints it was decided to initially only install one Blue Cube analyser on the final concentrate stream of the flotation circuit measuring sulfur, sulfides, gold and particle size. The accuracy of the calibration results were very good for all these properties. The sulfur measurement was used in an advanced control system to optimise and stabilise the grade. The paper presents comparisons between mineral grades determined using analytical laboratory analyses and the online Blue Cube data measurements, as well as benefits achieved by measuring grade online. An analysis of the plant data before and after installation of the Blue Cube and the advanced process control upgrade indicate that the flotation recovery increased by 1.98 per cent.CITATION:Kewe, T, Moffatt, N, Strobos, P, van der Spuy, D, Paine, A P and Keet, K, 2014. "Basin Minerals Limited commenced exploring for conventional strandline hosted mineral sands (rutile, ilmenite and zircon) deposits in the Murray Basin in April 1997. This has resulted in the discovery of a major mineral sands field in the Douglas Project area, located southwest of Horsham in the Wimmera Region of Western Victoria. After the successful completion of a pre-feasibility study on these deposits in September 2000, the Douglas Project has advanced to bankable final feasibility study. This study should be completed by mid-2002 to allow a decision to commence production in 2003 at an expected rate of in excess of 500 000 tonnes of combined mineral sands products per annum. The field comprises several mineralised strandlines. The main ones of economic interest are from west to east, the four strandlines, Acapulco, Bondi, Bondi East and Echo. These strandlines at August, 2000 contain total Inferred Resources of 443 million tonnes at 4.7 per cent HM at a one per cent HM cut-off; ie 20.8 million tonnes of heavy mineral concentrate which in turn contains 11.3 million tonnes of ilmenite and leucoxene, 1.3 million tonnes of rutile and 1.6 million tonnes of zircon. The heavy mineral concentrate is coarse-grained with mean diameter grain size of the strandline deposits ranging from 130 to 160 microns in size. Major controls on the formation of mineral sands deposits in the Murray Basin are discussed with reference to the main mineral sand bearing, strand plain domains; the Central Strand Plain, the New South Wales Strand Plain and the West Wimmera Strand Plain. The Douglas Project deposits on the West Wimmera Strand Plain domain are characterised by wide zones of mineralisation with high-grade cores (>10 per cent HM), low stripping ratios, and a valuable economic heavy mineral suite comprising 60 to 80 per cent of heavy mineral concentrate. Constituent mineralogy of the heavy mineral concentrate of the overall deposits is; ilmenite (40 to 58 per cent), leucoxene (five to seven per cent), rutile (four to ten per cent) and zircon (four to 14 per cent). The Douglas Project Area appears to be endowed with significantly enhanced levels of heavy minerals compared to other areas of the Murray Basin due to its unique palaeo-geographical position. Long shore drift to the south of the basin has caused large quantities of heavy mineral to be trapped against the palaeo-cliffs and headlands of a rugged palaeo-coastline which includes in a major embayment, the Grampian Mountains, the Black Range and the Glenelg Complex. To the east, major faulting and uplift has brought the fine-grained WIM offshore deposits close to the surface and has resulted in erosional stripping of mineralised strandline deposits. This mineralisation has been recycled and reconcentrated within the younger strandlines to the west within the adjacent Douglas Project Area. These strandlines are thought to be younger than other mineralised strandlines discovered to-date in the Murray Basin. The Project Area strandlines are described; ie their morphology, geology and patterns of mineral distribution. The mineralogy of each of the strandlines is distinctive and variations are noted along strike and section."

The majority of published material regarding the operation of crushing machinery is concerned with simulation of performance rather than design of equipment. The reason underlying the bias in published material relates to why research is carried out and who undertakes the research. Two distinct types of research can be identified: 1. Internal research by crusher manufacturers - generally related to mechanical design, value engineering and to the commercial realities attached to sales demands. Any work on basic crusher geometry or rock/machine interaction is of a sensitive nature and rarely enters the public domain. 2. Academic research - mostly confined to modelling of crusher performance and simulation. This is not because of any bias, but crusher design requires access to manufacturers data or at least an in-depth understanding of crusher design, which is rarely available. The crushing of rock is a complicated problem. It involves three aspects; the machine geometry, the material composition (type of rock/feed size distribution) and the machine/rock interaction. The machine geometry is often ignored in empirical mineral processing simulations, while the response of different feed materials is only nominally addressed in machine specifications provided by manufacturers. The manner by which the machine produces a stress field and causes different types of breakage for different rocks (or the machine/rock interaction) is sadly neglected by both groups. All three aspects must be considered collectively to successfully understand and model the entire crushing process. 1. The importance of crushing is often underestimated. In mining and mineral processing the invisibility of the crushing process is understandable as it merely provides a coarse reduction stage prior to the intricacies of mineral extraction. However in the quarrying industry crushing and screening basically provide the finished product. A brief overview of the quarrying industry shows the importance of crushing. Figure 1 gives production figures for most of the western European countries, Australia and the USA.

EMF measurements were performed in the temperature range of 933-1095 K to determine the thermodynamic properties of oxygen dissolution in liquid lead and lead-tin alloys with tin in the dilute concentration range of 0 to 6 atom per cent. The oxygen in the Pb-O system was varied by equilibrating with (PbO) slag, and that in the Pb-O-Sn system was varied with the addition of lead oxide. Wagner's interaction parameter approach was used to evaluate the self interaction parameter and ternary interaction parameters at different temperatures, to yield: E8(pb) = 97.35 - 113.27 x 103/t Eo(pb) = 139 - 20.616 x104/1' Quasichemical formulation was employed to yield Inf to reveal the effect of tin on oxygen in lead. Results have been predicted on the basis of classical models and those obtained using the QCT approach of Alcock and Richardson at Z=2 have been found to agree with the experimental Data.

The Canahuire epithermal Au-Cu-Ag deposit in southern Peru is a complex and challenging deposit for metallurgical studies. It has issues of gold locking in sulfides and non-sulfides, deleterious elements and acid rock drainage (ARD). From scoping study to feasibility study, there has been considerable improvement in the understanding of the important geometallurgical characteristics that need to be measured and modelled. This paper presents the current understanding and the requirements to continue to provide optimal models for mining studies.Significant effort has been put into understanding the genesis of the deposit. Improved spatial and temporal understanding of lithology, alteration, structure and mineralogy was used to build a geological and alteration model of the deposit.Early metallurgical programs quantified the effect of head grade on process plant recoveries, but the geometallurgical and statistical analyses did not identify other physical characteristics that influence these recoveries. The studies improved the understanding of the nature of locked gold which can occur as minute inclusions (< 5 ¦m) in sulfides (primarily pyrite with lesser arsenopyrite, pyrite being 100 times more abundant than arsenopyrite) and gangue minerals (quartz and carbonates) as well as solid solution in arsenopyrite and pyrite.The presence of pyrite and the limited buffering capacity of waste rocks increases the potential ARD, which will require mitigation costs before, during and after operations. Waste rock ARD potential has been classified and incorporated in the geometallurgical model. The current classification of waste rock at Canahuire, using international classification standards, is limited due to the complexity of the deposit.Complex deposit metallurgy necessitates a complex process flow sheet, including flotation and cyanidation. Economic recovery will be constrained by the relationships between economic variable grade, other elements and mineralogy. These constraints and inter-relationships are difficult to establish throughout the deposit with a single test. A follow-up geometallurgical program is under investigation and will attempt, with the help of additional test work, to map areas of higher and lower recoveries. It is hoped that metallurgical response can be linked to measurable parameters other than head grade.
