Ranger Uranium Mine, surrounded by Kakadu National Park is located in the Alligator Rivers Region (ARR) in the wet-dry monsoonal tropics, 250 km east of Darwin, Northern Territory. A trial landform (TLF), measuring approximately 200 m by 400 m (8 ha) was constructed during late 2008 and early 2009 by Energy Resources of Australia (ERA), adjacent to the northwestern wall of the tailings storage facility at the Ranger Mine. A collaborative research program involving the Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist (eriss) and ERA, has been underway to measure long-term (five to ten year) rainfall, run-off, sediment and solute losses, seepage and vegetation establishment on the TLF (Saynor et al, 2012; Lowry et al, 2014). This paper reports on bed load losses from four erosion plots built on the TLF. These were achieved by physically isolating approximately 30 × 30 m areas from the surrounding landform on three sides with sidewalls along with an open polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe on the downslope side. Each plot was instrumented with a range of sensors. Two plots, 1 and 2 were constructed on waste rock material, while plots 3 and 4 were constructed on waste rock mixed with approximately 30 per cent lateritic material. Plots 1 and 4 had tube stock planted in early 2009, and plots 2 and 3 were initially planted by direct seeding in July 2009 and were infill planted with tube stock in January 2011.CITATION:Saynor, M J and Erskine, W D, 2016. The two major massive sulphide deposits in the Silurian rocks of southern NSW, Captains Flat and Woodlawn, differ from classical Kuroko deposits in several ways, e.g. they lie on the flanks of felsic volcanic piles in volcano-sedimentary marine sequences, are relatively thin and large compared to individual Kuroko deposits, show prominent banding in lead-zinc ore, and contain arsenopyrite. Qualified stuctural and stratigraphic correlations of the various fault-bounded remnant Silurian sequences that host these deposits provide the basis for a new interpretation of the regional geological setting that also differs from that of the Kuroko deposits (Ohmoto, Tanimura, Date, Takahashi, 1983), and sheds further light on the distribution of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits in the Silurian rocks of NSW.

A database of over 1300 earthquakes has been used to investigate the relationship between seismicity and tectonics in two areas of eastern Queensland and NE New South Wales. These areas have been monitored by several networks that were installed primarily to monitor seismicity associated with the impounding of large reservoirs. Events that occurred prior to the installation of these networks have been excluded from the analysis because they have large uncertainties in location.Seismicity in SE Queensland and NE New South Wales is concentrated in the coastal regions. Activity also extends off the coast of Queensland and beyond the continental shelf. The coastal activity is mainly within the New England Fold Belt. An area of the fold belt overlain by the Clarence-Moreton Basin is also active. There is an area of activity near St. George that correlates to the Wunger Ridge. Fraser Island and the adjacent onshore area, near Maryborough, are notably aseismic.Within the New England Fold Belt there is a NNW trending zone of concentrated activity that includes the South D'Aguilar Block and the Esk Trough as far as Gayndah. The Nambour Basin, the Gympie Province, and the southern portion of the Yarrol Block are significantly less active.Composite focal mechanisms of several groups of accurately located earthquakes in SE Queensland indicate predominantly reverse faulting. This faulting is the result of the crust being compressed horizontally in a NE-SW direction.Activity in the Burdekin Falls Dam area of central eastern Queensland is confined to the Drummond and Bowen Basins. There is also significant activity offshore from Townsville and Bowen.

The depletion of high-grade hard and lumpy chrome ores has forced Zimbabwean ferrochrome producers to resort to low-grade friable ores that have an average of 28 per cent fines against a set limit of 12 per cent. Submerged open arc furnaces currently in use are associated with eruptions within the furnace because of the high amounts of fines, high energy consumption, as well as high SO2 and CO2 emissions. Traditionally employed agglomeration methods such as pelletising and the use of coke in the furnace have been discarded because of the pressure to lower operational costs and to achieve higher profit margins. This research aims to develop a method to incorporate lowgrade friable ore fines and unprocessed coal into production while lowering CO2 and SO2 emissions through a closed direct current (DC) arc furnace. The closed DC arc furnace could incorporate the friable ores and coal while maintaining above 90 per cent reduction rates. Preliminary findings also show that energy consumption could be reduced by up to 35 per cent by incorporating a pre-heating and pre-reduction system using the flue gases from the furnace. In the proposed circuit, the cost of production per ton of ferrochrome might be potentially lowered by an average of 30 per cent.

An economic block cave is dependent to the characteristics of the rock mass at stages of caving. These are cave initiation, propagation and ore flow. In this research, the rock engineering system (RES), first established by Hudson (1992) to solve complex rock engineering problems, is introduced and verified against the well-established caving parameters established by Laubscher. There are two types of factors influencing caving and these are natural (cannot be controlled) and induced (operator controlled). A RES based interaction matrix is developed by determining the rating parameters required to reproduce the caving database using Laubscher’s caving parameters. This provides the relative importance of the parameters in the interaction matrix. After discussing the rock mass caving process and identifying all the effective parameters, an interaction matrix is introduced to study the cave initiation of rock masses. The expert-semi-quantitative (ESQ) coding method is utilised to assign the numerical value to each parameter’s interaction. Thereafter, the interaction intensity and dominance of each factor in the system is determined to classify these factors. Finally, all the parameters affecting caving operation and their weights on the RES system are identified. This new application of RES in block caving is very efficient and useful for any stage of caving studies and helps experts to make decisions more accurately.CITATION:Mohammad Khani, M, 2016. Double corrosion protection (DCP) rock bolts have evolved to become complicated assemblies comprising numerous components. This complexity is mainly associated with durability considerations including potential exposure to adverse groundwater conditions and ensuring separation of dissimilar metals within the bolt assembly itself.Recent progress in the construction of glass-fibre reinforced polymer (GRP) rock bolts have the potential to provide a viable alternative to conventional steel rock bolts in civil tunnelling applications. The durability of the material results in a much simpler bolt detail and permits the use of resin rather than solely cement based grouts.This paper presents the findings of the comparative structural testing of GRP bolts with conventional DCP steel bolts. The axial load performance, including stiffness, ultimate capacity and ductility of bolts are compared. Shear behaviour of bolts is considered, including durability issues associated with damage to the plastic sleeve used in DCP bolts.The paper also considers other issues which are relevant to the design of temporary and permanent rock bolts used in tunnel support, such as initial tensioning and grouting. Supergene nickel sulphide ore mined currently by Agnew Mining Company is at times partially oxidised to sulphate. The resulting soluble nickel, and calcium and magnesium in mill water, are shown to act as depressants in flotation. The depressant effect is favourably selective in that violarite, the main nickel mineral, is less affected than pyrrhotite. Nickel recovery, however, is adversely affected, probably through reduced flotation of complex sulphides. Soda ash consumption is increased markedly by the presence of the cations as shown by operating data and pulp titration tests. A significant increase in concentrate grade, from 9% to 14% Ni, was achieved late in 1981. One of the changes in plant practice which contributed to this improvement was the addition of soda ash to mill feed rather than to flotation feed as before. It is shown by laboratory tests that this reduced the depressant effects of the cations, thereby improving recovery at the expense of rougher selectivity, or equivalently, increasing concentrate grade at constant recovery. The Hedong Gold Mine is located in the Yan(ai area, tihandong hroo%ill, e. China. It is an underground mine with an annual gold output of some 700 0(H) grams. The orebody is located on the edge of the Wanger Shan metamorphism zone, and the hangingwall of orebodies is thus defined by a prominent set of fractures. The proximity of the metamorphism zone and the inclusion of the fracture set ensure that both the orebody and the country rocks are unstable. The main orebodies dip at an angle of between 40 to 45¦, with a strike length of 160 metres and a horizontal width of 50 metres. Surface subsidence in the area is not permitted. Cut and fill mining is usually practiced. As the mining operation proceeds to greater depths, the ore grade is diminishing and it is necessary to find a more efficient stoping method. Sublevel open stoping with sequential extraction and filling of each sublevel has been designed and applied in situ. This new mining method is called 'sublevel open and fill stoping method' in the mine. Experience to-date is that new mining method is Satisfactory.

The quality of a photointerpreter's anno- tation of an image may be displayed by writing maps in which the pixels are shaded according to the number of times a pixel was seen to be on a feature. The map of grey tones is more valuable, if, for each grey level, a measure of quality is determined, which is the probability that a feature exists in a pixel of a given grey tone. From repeated annotations (at least four) of the same image by a single observer, it is possible to formulate a perception model which describes stochastic processes in the observer. From that model, it is possible to assign estimates of data quality for each observer to each grey tone. For two observers on the same scene, the 'mean' method of quantifying the grey levels is to assign a value equal to the mean of the ii,:lities for each of the two observers separately. For this example, the grey tones arr thus quantified at probability levels of 0.70, 0.80, 0.90 and 0.95.

Most Australian mining projects are becoming smaller, more remote and with lower grades of ore. Their small size has been making it harder for mining companies to absorb the large infrastructure costs. This has forced companies to reduce those costs in every way they can. Social factors, environmental groups and even tax laws have added other pressures to force down the infrastructure costs for remote projects. For the last ten years, the downward trend in costs has been marked. It seems certain to continue for years into the Future.

Both safety and productivity in underground gassy coal mines can be improved substantially if an appropriate gas management system is introduced. A strong direct relationship exists between the gas emission rate, roof and floor strata relaxation zones characteristic, mining activities and gas drainage practices. Detailed knowledge of geological factors, gas and coal-rock properties, as well as mining systems are necessary for the methodology used in predicting overall underground gassiness, and planning gas capture and ventilation systems. Early gas emission calculations for various mining activities, particularly for the longwall mining system are essential. A reasonably accurate prediction of gas make as well as the design of ventilation, gas recovery (drainage holes) techniques can be made using 'Floorgas' and 'Roofgas' computer simulations, provided sufficient geological, mining, and gas data are made available.

The Commission called tenders for a four boom hydraulic jumbo, plus basket, on an art- iculated carrier in Sept. 1977. Atlas Copco submitted the successful tender in Jan. 1978 for the supply of a three boom jumbo, plus basket. The Promec TH470 jumbo was commiss- ioned in the 2000 m long Sophia tunnel in Nov. 1978. Adequate spare parts were not available during the first three months of operation and the hammers could not be overhauled at the recommended interval. One hammer was removed after drilling 13 600 m due to a crack in the intermediate housing. Tests were conducted with different types of drilling consumables. Both rope and Hi-teed threads were tested and found compar- able. The average penetration rate in the granite was 1.1 m/min. Initially the drillers were not experienced enough to operate the BUT 15ERH booms without causing damage to the booms and hoses. Drilling deviation espec- ially of the perimeter holes was greater than expected. It is now obvious that greater attention must be given to attracting, train- ing and retaining the right type of operator and maintenance fitter.

The concept of hydro power in deep mines is based on the exploitation of the hydrostatic head that can be gained as refrigerated cooling water descends in shaft pipe columns from the surface, to provide hydraulic power for machines at the working face. This paper describes the work done on two important aspects of the controlled distribu-tion of the high pressure water within a mine, namely the control of pressure under normal operating conditions, and the control of flow in an emergency situation following a pipe breakage. Suitable methods of control have been determined using theoretical techniques to model the steady and unsteady flow behaviour of the water in the pipeline, and taking into consideration the environmental constraints on the types of control devices that can be used. The preferred approach is one in which the high pressure water itself is used as the control medium. The control valves themselves can be fairly conventional in design, but in the case of pipe break protection it is shown that a less conventional approach based on the use of a hydraulic fuse gives improved control performance.

Two key elements in the design of a pastefill or high density backfill system are the preparation of the backfill material and its distribution underground. This paper examines these two areas. Owing to the essentially impervious nature of total mill tailings, preparation of pastefill and high density fill from current tailings involves a physical dewatering process. There are currently three methods available for this process: Vacuum or pressure filters. These represent the ætraditionalÆ approach to the preparation of pastefill. Paste production storage mechanism. This is a thickening/storage mechanism developed with the specific objective of producingpaste/high density backfills. Fluidization. This system utilises silos fitted with simple dewatering devices and nozzles. Recently developed by CANMET, it provides the simplest and most economical approach.This paper describes and compares the three preparation methods, from a practical and an economic point of view. Once the pastefill/high density fill has been prepared and binder added, the backfill must be distributed underground into the stopes. A fundamental factor in the design of a distribution system is the rheology of the material. No two materials will exhibit the same properties, and a sequence of rheological and related testing is required prior to the completion of the design of the underground distribution system. This paper covers the testwork normally required and discusses the fundamental design parameters of pastefill distribution systems. The final section of this paper summarises the use of pastefill at three mines in Canada.

Fortescue Metals Group flagship operation, Cloudbreak, is located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The mine is capable of delivering an annualised production rate of 40 Mt/a. Positioned 50 km to the east of Cloudbreak is Fortescue’s Christmas Creek operation, which has a combined processing capacity in excess of 50 Mt/a. Following on from these successes, Fortescue advanced development of its western Pilbara mines at the 60 Mt/a Solomon Hub. These processing installations place Fortescue in a strong position to deliver on a guidance of between 155–160 Mt/a for financial year 2014/2015.As Fortescue enters a phase of asset consolidation and debt repayment over expansion, the business is commanding stronger performance through enhanced plant operating practices and mine site cost reduction initiatives. To this end, the strategic placement of instrumentation is an area being given greater consideration. Access to real-time information pertaining to conveyed materials is of major interest to operators for making timely process control decisions. Fortescue has recognised the importance of accurate and up-to-date process information about their ores and hence, has adopted the use of Scantech’s Geoscan mineral analysers at two of their mines.There are two Geoscans at Cloudbreak; one on the ROM feed conveyor and another on the final product conveyor. These allow the in-feed material grade characteristics to be assessed. Moreover, the final product stream can be monitored to ensure product quality is maintained within acceptable quality tolerances. A third Geoscan is installed at Christmas Creek mine on a conveyor that transfers final products to Stockyards.This paper discusses the use of the Geoscans in these installations, including benefits to Fortescue’s operations, as well as functional considerations such as the impact of maintenance and calibration. The Mount Sisa orebody on Misima Island, P.N.G., consists of goldsilver mineralisation associated with massive carbonate and amorphous iron-manganese oxides in fractures and breccia matrix. The orebody forms the northern extension of the Umuna deposit, which lies within a three kilometre strike length of a northwest trending, 300 metres wide, high angle fault zone. The structure is deeply oxidised, with the magniferous oxide material resulting from oxidation of carbonate. The wallrocks are metamorphosed basement psammopelites and basic volcanic rocks, extensively intruded by microgranodiorite. These are dominantly epidotised and sericitised. The precious metals are associated with anomalous Cu, Zn, Pb, Mn, As, Ba, Ga, Sb, and Mo. Many of the features of the Mount Sisa mineralisation are characteristic of volcanic-hosted epithermal deposits of western North America.Lithologic and textural gradation is observed between the carbonate hydrothermal breccia-fill at Mount Sisa, and the quartz dominated brecciafill and dilational fracture-fill mineralisation which forms most of the Umuna deposit to the south. This gradational relationship is analogous to that in the Amethyst-OH vein system at Creede, Colorado, where it is shown to be indicative of deposition from laterally migrating fluids.

Conventional narrow vein mining, utilising hand held methods, is expensive and requires specialised miners who are becoming a rarity. Hand held mining techniques (shrinkage stoping, leading stoping and cut and fill) have the advantage that they can be selective. The methods allow continued sampling of the face, control of hanging wall conditions and are adaptable to changes in strike and dip. On the other hand, more productive longhole stoping methods can allow excessive dilution due to drill hole deviations and changes in orebody dip and can be subject to unexpected hanging wall or footwall failures. Development of small scale equipment (as narrow as 0.8m wide) used for drilling or bogging very smallaccess drives has been ongoing over the past decade. In this paper, types of equipment are examined and compared, particularly with respect to their produc- tivity, size, and working environment. The introduction of electric hydraulic equipment has provided a better working environment with reduced noise, exhaust fumes and heat. The concept of the "hydraulic cherry picker" may have application in mining steeply dipping orebodies. The system requires orebodies to be reasonably consistent in dip over 15 metre sub-level intervals. The system involves the basic concept and skills of machine and airleg mining, combined with the safety and productivity of a mechanized work platform. The platform or basket is stabilized between the hanging wall and foot- wall by hydraulic rams and is extended by a tilting hydraulic boom mounted to a small prime mover or trailer. Design concepts (including remote controlled charging of explosives, adaptation to the boom for rock cutting and the overall electric hydraulic mining concept) are put forward in the paper as a view as to how narrow vein mines will be mined in the future.

A mineralogical analysis has shown that in the Hartebeesfontein ore studied, uranium is associated mainly with uraninite, sulphides such as pyrite and to a lesser degree carbonaceous material such as thucolite. Little could be learned from the literature regarding the mechanism of flotation of these uranium-bearing minerals. A wide variety of reagents were used so that conditions enhancing the flotation of either the sulphides, carbonaceous material, oxides like uraninite, or combinations thereof, were created. As could be expected, the xanthate based floats gave-better selective recovery of sulphides than oleic acid. A substantial fraction of the uranium is associated with pyrite, so that addition of oleic acid to a xanthate float did not enhance the recovery or grade of uranium. After a pre-leach with sulphuric acid in which the pH and Eh were controlled so as to destroy the uraninite, higher uranium recoveries were obtained for the combined float (xanthate, DTP and oleic) and the DTP float. This was most evident when iron was added before flotation. Roasting, which destroyed the sulphides and thucolite, caused a significant decrease in uranium recoveries. The uranium liberated in this way was obviously not flotable in the same way as the uranium liberated from uraninite. A small amount of iron (2 kg/t) added before milling resulted in slightly higher grades and recoveries of sulphur for xanthate based floats. Higher iron additions had a detrimental effect on sulphur recoveries. Even in the case of oleic acid the addition of small amounts of iron had a positive effect on the recovery of sulphur and uranium.

The Mine is an underground zinc (Zn), lead (Pb) and silver (Ag) operation in central New South Wales (NSW). Broadly speaking the Mine has two domains that require rehabilitation, the mine industrial area (MIA) and the tailings storage facility (TSF). The MIA has been used for the handling and processing of ore and contains elevated sulfate, sulfide and metals (Pb, Zn). The TSF receives the by-products of processing, that is, potentially acid forming (PAF) tailings which also contain elevate sulfate, sulfide and metals. Typically, the rehabilitation of a TSF involves two controls. Firstly, controlling the potential for PAF tailings to form acid rock drainage (ARD) by limiting interaction with oxygen. Secondly, once the tailings are unsaturated, limiting interaction with water (usually as rainfall) to reduce the potential for ARD to be transported to the receiving environment. These two controls are often employed in the form of a cover.In semi-arid environments there are many Australian examples of covers that have been built to limit interactions of mine by-products with oxygen and water. Typically, the covers contain one or more layers and are built from soil and rock which may include run-of-mine rock. The Mine however has limited supplies of stockpiled soil; and run-of-mine rock is not generated in large volumes because it is used as backfill underground. A cover design strategy was developed to cater for these limiting factors. The strategy identified soil, ore and rock accretion (the accretion) below the MIA could be a potential source of borrow material for the cover. The purpose of this paper is to describe the cover design process, the method and results of large (2 m tall) column trials that were used as a cost-effective way to trial three cover options and finally, the paper describes the water balance that was developed from the column trial results and subsequent modelling using SVFlux.CITATION:Rohde, T K and Jamson, N, 2018. Potential means of lowering overall costs to permit deeper stripping include : 1. the use of larger diameter blastholes in highly-fissured strata (to reduce drilling costs); 2. dewatering from semi-permanent bores to reduce blasting costs (by maximising the use of bulk ANFO) and promote highwall stability; and 3. the use of inclined blastholes, bulk AN, staggered V1 patterns, adequate backfill and more cost-effective stemming columns. Each of these is covered. The pumping of bulk watergels continuously raises the blasthole water column, thereby perpetuating the demand for these blasting agents. This must be a principal consideration when choosing between a bulk and a packaged watergel. Any packaged product should exhibit dimensional permanence and an energy yield per metre length equal to that of bulk ANFO. Possible ways in which controlled trajectory blasting (CTB) could benefit deeper stripping operations are outlined. By allowing the maximum use of bulk ANFO, de- watering may be a prerequisite of a viable CTB Operation.
