Daily geological mapping of the Panguna porphyry copper/gold system since mining began in 1971 has provided a good basis for resource estimation and mine planning as the mine and estimation methods have advanced. Geology defined during evaluation and early mining has been substantiated and many smaller features have been better defined or identified. Breccias, pebble dykes, major structures and location of lithology contacts important to short term planning and long term pit slope stability have been defined. Correlation of copper and gold with breccia zones is quite striking and was not fully appre- ciated at the end of evaluation. Pit mapping geology, and diamond drill geology and assays, are now routinely added to a Geological Data base on computer, which forms the major geological data base for modelling the deposit. Geology from diamond drill logging, updated by pit mapping, and assays from diamond drilling updated by blast hole assays have been incorporated in a 45 bench deep 486 000 block computer based block model which forms the basis for long and short term planning. The introduction of pre-concentration scre- ening, based on the distribution of mineralisat- ion and fracturing, puts more emphasis on the definition of grade distribution at low concent- ration and on structures in the rock. Geostatistics is now used for resource estimation and has produced acceptable estim- ates. but these need to be refined, particularly in peripheral, low grade areas of the deposit.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Ertsberg mining district is a 100 km2 area in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. The district hosts mineralised and barren, outcropping and hidden porphyry and equigranular intrusions. There are at least six major (100+ m wide) porphyry intrusions identified from surface and underground mapping and drill cores. These are the Grasberg Igneous Complex (GIC), Karume porphyry, Lembah Tembaga porphyry, Ertsberg Stockwork Zone porphyry, Kay intrusion and the Wanagon intrusion. Recent deep drilling adjacent to the GIC identified a new hidden porphyry at depth, the Gajah Tidur (Sleeping Elephant), which extends south-west beneath the Kucing Liar skarn. Other named small porphyry dykes and plugs in the district include the West Grasberg, North Grasberg, Idenberg, South East and Zaagkam intrusions. The largest equigranular intrusion is the multiphase Ertsberg diorite.Igneous activities occurred in a relatively short span (<1 million years) from about 3.4 Ma to 2.7 Ma ago, based on U-Pb zircon dating. The various intrusions in the district related to ore mineralisation are high K and appear to have been derived from the same parental chamber, based on similar whole rock rare earth element patterns. Radiogenic Nd- and Sr-isotopic variations indicate that there were multiple recharge events into the parental chamber.The larger intrusions and all economic mineralisation occur in a 4 km wide zone that parallels the N60W-trending axis of the Yellow Valley Syncline (YVS), one of the large folds generated during collisional tectonism. Intrusion pathways at ~3 Ma were localised into dilatational areas in a late and/or post-collisional NW-trending, left-lateral strike-slip zone with Riedel shear offsets between the major fault zones. Development in the theory and practice of hearth drainage is reviewed. Difficulties in the hearth drainage were re- newed during late sixties and early seventies when the size of a blast furnace and the top pressure were increased to result in the increase in tapping rate. Hearth drainage was improved first by in- creased number of tapping and then decreased tapping rate as it was predicted by theoretical studies. State of the coke bed in the hearth, e.g., 'floating' or 'sitting-on' the hearth bottom, is discussed in relation with influential factors on it and its influence on the furnace operation. The 'sitting-on' coke bed is to be aimed at for the consistent furnace working and for the lower rate of erosion of the hearth refractory. As the continuous tapping became standard prac- tice in large blast furnaces, the interest in the basic research renewed. Prospect of the further research including mathematical modelling of the hearth drainage is discussed.

The paper presents an overview of the mining industry of Papua New Guinea. Although the Bougainville problem is still unresolved, new mines like Ok Tedi, Misima and Porgera, which have come on stream during recent past, have raised hopes of sustained growth period in the industry. Kutubu Oilfield is also being developed in the Southern Highlands and the oil production has commenced from July 1992. Government revenue from these mega projects will increase five-fold during 1993 and 1994. A new mine which is being planned is the fabulous Lihir Deposit, on an island renowned to be full of gold. Gold occurs within a volcano which still contains high temperature ground water because the system which created the deposit is still geothermally active.In Papua New Guinea, problems of environmental management are far easier to tackle than those of a socio-political and economic nature involving compensation payments to the landowners and the distribution of royalties and taxes between the national and provincial governments. At the socio-political level, the country has not been able to resolve the problems of land rights versus mining rights. Whenever mining starts in a big way, it raises people's expectations to a very high level, which then becomes the focal point of dispute between landowners, provincial governments, national government and mining companies. A new system called 'Forum' has been tried to bring all parties together and son out the issues. The system appears to be working well in new mines like Ok Icdi, Porgera, Misima and Kutubu Oilfields.

An integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling study of the phase equilibria in the FeOFeO1.5- SbO1.5-SiO2 system in equilibrium with liquid Sb and Sb-Ag metal has been undertaken to develop thermodynamic model of the Na-Si-Fe-O slag system with S-Sn-Sb-Pb-As minor elements based on the experimental investigation of the selected sub-systems. New experimental phase equilibria data at 575–1600°C were obtained for this system using high-temperature equilibration of synthetic mixtures with predetermined compositions in sealed silica ampoules, Fe3O4 basket in sealed silica ampoule, or Re foils, a rapid quenching technique, and electron probe X-ray microanalysis of the equilibrated phase compositions. Experimental results on phase equilibria in the Fe-Sb-Si-O+Sb metal system obtained helped to produce initial set of model parameters in the slag. The primary phase fields of quartz/tridymite/cristobalite (SiO2), 2 high-SiO2 immiscible liquids, olivine (Fe2SiO4), wustite (FeO1+x), spinel (Fe3O4), schafarzikite (FeSb2O4) and valentinite/ senarmontite (Sb2O3) were identified in the binary Sb2O3-FeO, Sb2O3-SiO2 and ternary FeO-Sb2O3- SiO2 systems. Further refinement, particularly the distribution of excess Gibbs energy among the ‘FeO’-Sb2O3-SiO2 and ‘FeO1.5’-Sb2O3-SiO2 interactions, required the study at more oxidising conditions. Oxygen potential was increased using an inert metal (Ag) rather than using the gas flow due to the high volatility of Sb-containing gaseous species. Liquid Ag-Sb alloys with low concentrations of Sb of a few percent were used. At these conditions, the concentration of AgO0.5 in slag was below 1 mol per cent, which had a small effect on observed phase equilibria in the system. In addition, important information on the solubility of silver in slags is produced, which can be valuable when treating electronic recycling materials or primary silver-containing ores through the Pb process. Two main areas were addressed: the spinel-tridymite boundary (40–70 per cent SiO2 in slag) and spinel liquidus near 15 per cent SiO2 in slag. This allowed to deconvolute the separate contributions of the FeO-Sb2O3(-SiO2) and Fe2O3-Sb2O3(-SiO2) systems.

The load capacity of a friction bolt has long been regarded as 4 t/m of embedment for ground support design analysis and supported by in situ pull test results. In recent years, the authors have observed lower pull test results or inconsistent results which were rarely sighted in the early 2000s. The lower pull test results indicated in some cases that reliable friction bolt capacity (≥90 per cent of results) is closer to 3 t/m of embedment with some geotechnical engineers adjusting the ground support parameters in the design work accordingly. This can be in contrast with other mines which reliably obtain 4 t/m (or greater) using the same suppliers bolt in similar ground conditions. This raised several questions: • What is the effect of poor installation (bolt twist or bolt hole deviation)? • Does the performance of friction bolts vary in different rock masses? • Does bolt performance vary between suppliers? • What effect does increased jumbo feed/percussion/rotation settings have? • Have the bolt dimensions or steel strip width changed? • Have the physical bolt properties changed? • Have the steel properties changed? This paper was aimed to answer as many of these questions as possible and discuss each variable in detail. This project included friction bolt trials at various mine sites across Australia, multiple friction bolt manufacturers, steel manufacturers and laboratory analysis. The paper also includes discussion on what the authors consider best practice for pull testing. It should be noted, the terms ‘friction stabiliser’ and ‘split set’ used in this paper are used in a generic manner and is not linked to any specific ground support supplier. Whilst its acknowledged within the industry the term split set and friction stabiliser is used interchangeably, the authors acknowledge that the term split set is a trademark of Split Set Mining Systems and has been used in context in this paper.

The need to improve existing metallurgical processes and to develop new processes to meet the economic challenges that lie ahead requires the application of the tools of process analysis viz. mathematical models, physical models, pilot plants, laboratory measurements and plant tests. Examples of the application of these techniques to processes are described in this paper. Several of these techniques, combined with basic knowledge, are necessary to make improvements and for existing processes this always involves plant measurements. Also because metallurgical processes include extraction, refining, alloying, casting, mechanical working and heat treatment, an interdisciplinary approach to research and development is essential. This paper argues that metallurgical engineering is a discipline that is uniquely able to encompass the broad spectrum of chemical- and physical-metallurgy processes and is therefore essential to the health of the metallurgical industry.Regrettably many metallurgical engineering departments are not offering courses on process analysis, control, optimization, etc so necessary to meet modern industrial challenges.

The Lihir Gold Mine, in Papua New Guinea, is a large open pit operation within an active geothermal system inside a collapsed volcanic crater. This unique setting has a big impact on the mine operation because of the occurrence of geothermal hazards. The system for managing geothermal hazards that has been developed by Lihir Gold Mine is a pioneering effort that can be applied to future mine discoveries in a similar environment. The controls are integral to the mining operations and allow mining to proceed whereas without them mining could not be considered. Truck and shovel productivities in conventional open pit operations are constrained by diggability, equipment availabilities and utilisation. At Lihir, additional constraints are in the form of 100 m exclusion zones around working shovels and 50 m exclusion zones around working drills. Given that the mine has seven large digging units and six drills, this amounts to a lot of area that excludes the presence of people on the ground. So how are the necessary work like grade control, survey, blasthole loading, and in-pit maintenance performed safely to achieve production targets? The answer is in the highly specialised procedures that have been developed that utilise geological, geothermal and geotechnical knowledge to predict problem areas and also deal with the organisation of movement in the pit for people and mining equipment. This paper will detail how scheduled material movement can be maintained despite the challenging conditions faced at Lihir Gold Mine.

Successful closure of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) is an environmental issue faced globally by metalliferous mines. During the initial feasibility and design phase of the mine life importance is placed on the physical stability of above ground TSFs, largely driven by legislative requirements, whilst closure planning is often a secondary consideration. However, as the landform is further developed and constructed attention must be paid to regularly revisit the original closure plan and update it to achieve the best (sustainable) possible outcome for both the environment and stakeholders. A mine in northern Queensland is in the process of developing a closure strategy at their TSF. Appropriate closure measures for the TSF are required to mitigate the impact of any seepage emanating from the TSF on the groundwater and surface water receptors. O’Kane Consultants Pty Ltd (OKC) have provided the mine assistance with the development of a TSF cover system design in order to appropriately manage tailings during operations and to prepare for the facilities’ closure. OKC has collected data since 2007 from cover system field trials located on the TSF. To enhance engineering judgement in the design of future cover systems, calibration of soil-plant-atmosphere numerical models to field data (referred as ‘field response modelling’) were completed. Calibrated model inputs can be used to provide insight into long-term cover system performance as well as a tool for design of the final landform.Following a site investigation, materials characterisation and numerical modelling program various cover system alternatives were developed. Two of the preferred cover system alternatives referred to as Test Plot #1 (TP#1) and Test Plot #2 (TP#2) (Figure 1), were constructed at the site and instrumented. Monitoring instrumentation comprised several nests of in situ volumetric water content and thermal conductivity sensors to measure changes in water content, temperature and matric suction within the cover system materials and underlying tailings waste. It is well known that most roof falls in coal mines typically occur at and around intersections. Room-and-pillar and longwall coal mining systems typically develop 3-way and 4-way intersections. This research develops an improved scientific understanding of stress distribution and associated instability behaviour around 3-way and 4-way coal mine intersections through 3-D numerical modelling and limited field observations. Numerical analyses were performed for an Illinois longwall coal mine to identify factors that influence intersection stability. The stability of immediate roof, floor strata, and coal ribs at and around intersections are considered with pre-mining regional horizontal stress. Non-linear failure analyses used the Hoek-Brown failure criterion for rock mass. Progressive failure zones in and around intersections were developed. For a typical 4-way intersection, pillar corners across the intersection fail first and lead to progressive failure of the immediate roof and floor layers. The mechanism of failure is similar for a 3-way intersection but the shape and extension of failed zones differ. For the 3-way intersection, the effect of off-set distance was analysed. It was found that minimum off-set distance of about 10 m (centre to centre distance between two 3-way intersections) was required to minimize interaction between two intersections. A simple instrumentation program monitor ground movements around intersections. These data were used to design the intersection geometry that is now being practiced by the mine. Long Operations is located on the eastern slope of the Kambalda Dome in Western Australia. Kambalda hosts nickel deposits that are modelled to have formed from an exsolving sulfide melt from a parental komatiite melt. The nickel deposit model predicts a stratigraphical relationship where massive Fe-Ni-Cu-sulfides are deposited in troughs at the base of komatiite channels. The basal contact of the sulfides is generally tholeiitic basalt. The Kambalda geological sequence form a dome structure with a granodioritic core and have undergone tectonic and metamorphic overprinting, resulting in the formation of upper greenschist to lower amphibolite-facies units.On the basalt-ultramafic contact, within the Long Operations, there are two separate channels hosting seven different orebodies. The Moran orebody is the most undisturbed orebody at Long Operations, with many primary magmatic textures preserved, making it ideal for studies to improve the existing nickel sulfide formation model. Detailed exploration and production infill drilling and systematic sampling indicates consistent nickel tenor variations over the entire Moran orebody. This was also observed in other deposits in Western Australia and was explained as metamorphic variations. Similar variations are observed with some trace elements that cannot be explained by metamorphic overprint but with gravitational segregation in the liquid sulfide. Other more complex trace element patterns (eg Cr) require additional explanations and are partly originated from incorporation of underlain basalt and sediment and partly from gravitational segregation.From a mining perspective, the Moran orebody can be used as an example of modern high-speed mining, but at the same time preserving samples for the future and allowing knowledge from the geological context and geochemical signatures to improve future exploration.CITATION:Staude, S, Marriott, S, Griffith, J, Laming, C, Hammond, D, Stanfield, S and Sheppard, S, 2014. Base metal mineralisation occurs at several locations within the regionally metamorphosed Kanmantoo Group on the southeastern flank of the Mount Lofty Ranges between Kanmantoo and Strathalbyn, 50 km southeast of Adelaide. Sulphide mineralisation is of three main types (Seccombe et al, 1985):1. copper deposits, at the Kanmantoo and Bremer mines, South Hill prospect and several minor occurrences,2. lead-zinc deposits at Aclare, Wheal Ellen, Strathalbyn, St. Ives, Scott's Creek, and Glenalbyn mines,3. pyrite-pyrrhotite mineralisation of the Nairne pyrite deposit and many other pyritic schist units within the Kanmantoo Group.Syntheses of folding, metamorphism and stratigraphy of the Kanmantoo Group were given by Kleeman and Skinner (1958), Offler (1960, 1963), Offler and Fleming (1968), Marlow (1975), Mancktelow (1979) and Parker (1986). Studies of the general relationships of mineralisation to structure in the Kanmantoo area were given by Grasso and McManus (1954), Mirams (1962), Poole (1969), and Lindqvist (1969).Several conflicting views on the origin of mineralisation in the Kanmantoo Group have been proposed. Thomson (1975) considered much of the mineralisation as a late-stage product of regional metamorphism and he, like Parker (1986) and Lambert et al (1987), stressed the importance of major lineaments as an ore control. However, Lindqvist (1969) and Verwoerd and Cleghorn (1975) tentatively suggested a syn-sedimentary origin to the Kanmantoo copper deposit and Jensen and Whittle (1969) and Seccombe et al. (1985) on the basis of sulphur isotope data proposed a bacteriogenic sulphur source and a sedimentary origin for sulphides in the Nairne pyrite deposit. The latter suggested that most copper deposits represent stockwork, vein or disseminated zones within subsurface vents whereas massive mineralisation at Wheal Ellen and Aclare mines probably accumulated on the ocean floor.This paper presents new geological information on the structural and metamorphic setting of the base metal deposits and attemptsto relate this information to previous regional studies of the Kanmantoo Group. Estimates of pressure and temperatureof peak metamorphic conditions based on silicate mineral stabilities are considered in relation to various silicate and sulphidegeothermometers which have not previously been applied to rocks in the Kanmantoo Group.

Zinc alloy castings continue to account for a very large, world-wide end-use market for zinc. However, an ever expanding multitude of other materials and processes are increasingly providing viable, cost-effective alternatives to designers, many of whom have no particular allegiance to any one industry. In order to meet this challenge, innovation of and for the zinc hot chamber pressure die casting process, in concert with sustained and inventive market development, is clearly required. While 'Quality' is now the watchword, and the goal of zero defects is being rigorously pursued, other important goals which must be addressed include net shape casting, enhanced productivity and increased energy efficiency. The paper gives an overview of several practical, process-orientated, projects designed to help achieve these goals. For example, a project designed to understand and precisely measure dimensional changes of castings with time has provided some of the critical information needed for net shape casting. A second study is looking anew at surface quality in relation to process conditions as an important step toward the goals of zero scrap rate and increased productivity. Developing the correct die casting machine parameters for achieving optimal quality and properties of zinc (ZA) die castings is a further example of research designed to benefit both the die caster and his customer, chiefly the original equipment manufacturer (OEM). A project on die soldering or galvanising in response to varying process parameters is similarly being considered in order to foster increased understanding and avoidance of problems, with a special interest in the use of special coatings. The maintenance or expansion of the future market for zinc die casting alloys also depends on design for functional applications, as an adjunct to their traditional decorative use. The role that alloys with enhanced properties can play, such as ZATEC, a new high creep resistant alloy developed specifically for elevated stress/elevated temperature applications, will be briefly discussed.

During the last few years the quality requirements on roads and railroads have become more accentuated due to the desire to minimise maintenance costs. This has, in turn, led to increasing requirements in the preparation of ballast materials and pavement aggregates. As the access to natural gravel in northern Europe is decreasing (due to lack of availability or by law restrictions) the use of crushed rock material is becoming more and more important. The aim of this paper is to derive and describe a universal method for the prediction of particle size distributions from compressing crusher machines such as jaw- and cone-crushers. Based on a closely defined physical model, expressions which define the size reduction process are derived. Conditions for simplifying assumptions are clearly outlined. The choice and mix of breakage functions is a central subtopic iò the analysis of the crusher machine processes. Known breakage functions are reviewed and evaluated. A new concept for determination of a true breakage operator which is related to physical properties of the crusher device and the size distribution of the feed material is introduced. Finally experimental tests are compared to numerical calculations. The method described in the paper can be a useful tool when designing crushing plants or when optimizing the output of compressing crusher Machines.

The successful dissolution of the valuable metal components of a solid phase is often a basic requirement for a successful hydrometallurgical treatment process. Sulphide concentrates are often an intermediate product in the production of refined metals. These concentrates need to be further processed to realise the contained metal values in a useful form. Pyrometallurgical techniques have tended to dominate, at least the initial treatment of metal sulphide concentrates. The technology described, Activox«, has been developed specifically for the hydrometallurgical treatment of these sulphide mineral concentrates, in particular those containing copper, nickel or gold. The Activox« dissolution technology coupled with the use of existing, or newly developed, downstream processing techniques, offers alternative processing options for the recovery of full value, saleable metal products. The technology is suitable for application down to relatively small scales opening up the opportunity for on-site production of metals even at modest scale mining Operations.

Silicon is a vital element in many products today, such as electronic components, solar devices, high-quality alloys, and many others. The growing global demand highlights the need for the development of sustainable production methods to meet this demand as an alternative to the current carbothermic reduction, submerged arc furnace (SAF) based process. An alternative to this is the aluminothermic reduction of quartz in a CaO-SiO2 slag, which not only reduces direct carbon dioxide emissions but also promotes the utilisation of secondary raw materials such as quartz fines, aluminium dross and scrap as well as secondary alumina (SA) from dross recycling. In the current study, the effects of SA and CaF2 additions to slag on the resulting metal composition and metal yield were explored. Results were compared with thermodynamic simulations using FactSage™ 8.1. Experimental results show that, in agreement with thermodynamic simulations, the silicon content of the alloy is increased, while the Ca is decreased for starting slags where CaO-SiO2 is partly replaced by CaF2. Similarly, the addition of SA to the initial slag results in an alloy with a higher silicon content.

For all mineral resource-based companies, it is important to reach the right balance of investment between acquisition and exploration to allow the best chance of achieving long-term corporate goals. The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) provides an excellent example of success from generative exploration and supports the belief that exploration can be justified, not only in terms of investment criteria, but also because it is essential to a company wishing to build a dynamic profitable growth path based on world-class deposits as cheaply as possible. BHP was incorporated in 1885 to mine a lead/zinc/silver discovery at Broken Hill. The Company has since gone through a steel development phase (1911-1965) and is now in a major phase of growth partly based on exploration success. This third phase was marked by decisions taken in the 1950's to search actively for mineral and energy resources above and beyond the requirements of the steel industry. The commercial successes of this period have been Bass Strait oil and gas, Groote Eylandt manganese, Deepdale iron ore, Gregory coal and Carnilya East nickel. In total at least 22 new resource discoveries have been made in the last 25 years, of which 11 have been developed and several are undergoing feasibility studies. A financial analysis shows that the real value of the returns seeded by discovery covers the real exploration cost many times over. Moreover, the major discoveries have had a spectacular impact on the growth and development of the Company. BHP's present exploration effort is directed towards geological targets which most frequently meet attractive financial criteria and also promote diversification from steel-related earnings.

The control objectives and constraints for grinding circuits are ana- lysed, taking a single-stage ballmill-cyclone circuit as an example. The design of a hierarchical modular control system is described, for implemen- tation on modern microprocessor-based control systems. Product sizing measurement is identified as a problem area, and a new approach to product sizing inference, from on-line cyclone feed and overflow measure- ments, is presented. The procedure over-comes several practical difficulties of a previously proposed inferential method and is therefore expected to find application in more advanced grinding circuit control systems.

The quality of the sample data must be maintained through the application of a robust quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) program, including documentation of sampling procedures, training of sampling personnel and the regular monitoring of control samples. However, the application of QAQC programs in the minerals industry is often poor and the purpose misunderstood. It is all too common to have good quality control data collected, but no analysis work carried out until after drilling is completed. In a lengthy drill program, this can lead to problems not being discovered and corrected as they happen. Moreover, rectifying problems afterwards will be costly in terms of time and money, if not impossible. The consequences of poor quality sample data are many and include such effects as over- or underestimation of block grades, misclassification of ore and waste, and lower confidence in the resource/reserve models. The purpose of this paper is to highlight, using case studies, the importance of good QAQC practices to monitor the quality of sampling and laboratory sample preparation and analysis.

The Wonthaggi coalfield is in South Gippsland, about 90 miles southeast of Melbourne. It is situated on the down-faulted block of the South Gippsland highlands that lies south of the Kongwak fault, between the Powlett River and the sea (Fig. 1). The coal, which is of Jurassic age, occurs in two small, and intensely faulted, limnic basins, that lie on either side of a concealed ridge of Silurian sediments. The coal was first found as thin seams outc1'opping in the cliffs at Cape Paterson, but the seams that are worked at Wonthaggi are concealed beneath a veneer of Cainozoic sands that covers the Jurassic strata, and were found by boring.The c9al seams are worked by the State Coal Mine, which was opened in 1909 to ensure a supply of coal for the Victorian railways, following a prolonged strike in the Newcastle field of New South Wales.
