There are many physical factors that can affect the self-heating rate of coal. The presence of seam gas has often been referred to as inhibiting coal self-heating due to the limited access of oxidation sites created by the presence of the gas adsorbed on the coal pores. Similarly, the presence of bed moisture in the coal also acts as an inhibitor of oxidation by blocking access of air into the pores. Gas drainage of a coal seam prior to mining removes both gas and moisture from the seam. Bulk coal self-heating tests in a two-metre column on both gassy, as-mined and gas-drained, dried high volatile bituminous coal show that removal of gas and moisture from the coal accelerates the rate of self-heating to thermal runaway from 8.5 days to 4.25 days, from a start temperature of 30¦C, with an airflow of 0.25 L/min. The corresponding gas evolution pattern for each of these situations is different. Therefore, it is necessary to take this change in coal condition into consideration when developing a spontaneous combustion management plan.

The process design for green- or brown-fields metallurgical plants typically starts with two fundamental elements: the detailed mass and energy balance and the plant flow availability. The detailed mass and energy balance is generally developed using process flow-sheet simulation software and represents the steady-state operation of the plant at normal operating conditions. The plant flow availability, also known as a range of other industry-specific terms such as ‘flow availability’ and ‘operating factor’, describes the ratio of plant production to the steady-state mass balance. These elements are then used together as the basis for equipment selection and design.Plant flow availability takes into account a myriad of production loss factors including planned and breakdown maintenance, feed availability and composition changes, variability in operational performance and the interaction of batch and continuous unit operations. The combined impact of these loss factors are complex and as such plant flow availability is usually derived using a top-down approach such as comparison to an existing operation, a group of similar operations or to an anecdotal ‘industry leading’ benchmark. These top-down approaches are fraught with risk however, as they cannot factor in changes to equipment selection, flow-sheet or plant operating philosophy, and can result in over-expenditure of scarce capital or shortfalls in plant production.The use of dynamic simulation to provide a bottom-up alternative to quantifying the plant flow availability in metallurgical plant design has been growing rapidly in recent years. It provides a technique to quantify the combined impact of the loss factors described here and a tool to support process design and equipment selection by facilitating a range of sensitivity and what-if analyses. Studying the ore textures in a discrete orebody is a novel approach to estimating liberation potential of the ore minerals present. As part of a PhD thesis, this project aims at classifying and quantifying the textures of the Hilton North orebodies, and at estimating their liberation characteristics.

A new ecologically promising technology for the copper-nickel ore benefication using insert gases and pyrrhotite depression is under consideration. The finely dispersed nickel-containing sulphides and the pyrrhotite are easily oxidised during the process of flotation resulting in deterioration of selectivity and valuable component loss in the tailings. One of the ways to improve the benefication is the flotation of easily-oxidising minerals in an inert atmosphere. In the experiments nitrogen was taken as the inert gas supposing that in the industrial scale operations nitrogen generating, as a by-product of the oxigen production. will be used (Rybas et at, 1989). The most wide-spread mineral in the Norilsk rich sulphide copper-nickel ores is pyrrhotite containing iron, sulphur, nickel and platinum group metals. Up to 30 per cent of the pyrrhotite sulphur is recovered into the nickel concentrate causing the high sulphur dioxide emission in the further pyrometallurgical process of nickel production. This is the reason why the problem of the pyrrhotite removal during the ore concentration should be solved, the critical factor of the problem being the lowest possible nickel content in the pyrrhotite. According to the data of the geological and mineralogical mapping the nickel content in the pyrrhotites of rich ores varies from 0.3 to 1.8 per cent, with the mean value equal to 0.6 - 0.8 per cent. This assures the technological and economical effectiveness of the low-grade pyrrhotite removal during the flotation process.

"Column leach tests are used frequently to predict recoveries and reagent consumption for nickel laterite heap leaches. These column leaches often run for more than 100 days and therefore require long-term monitoring and data analysis to achieve the desired information. To minimise the cost and time required to obtain relevant information for nickel laterite heap leaching, we have developed a small-scale hydrogeometallurgical laboratory test to serve as a proxy to column, and by inference, heap leaching. In excess of 50 leach tests were conducted using four different small-scale proxy and column leach tests to compare predicted nickel recoveries, acid consumption and leach kinetics and to determine whether insight into potential scale-up effects can be obtained. The most promising proxy test was identified and we achieved a statistically significant recovery and acid consumption correlations between this test and the column leach tests. The accuracy of the small-scale tests was confirmed by column tests run on new laterite ores. The Alligator Rivers Region has been the scene of one of Australia's most intensive environmental monitoring efforts since the current generation of uranium mining was mooted in the 1970s. Prior to mining, the local environment and the nature of potential impacts were not well known. The initial monitoring programs therefore included large baseline characterisation and research components. After some 15 years, water, soil and sediment monitoring programs have been reduced to a fraction of their early size, as the mining and natural systems became better known and characterised, and the actual nature of the environmental impacts were established. Modem techniques allow much more rapid and thorough identification of chemical species and elements of concern, allowing much more focused monitoring programs to be designed. In the 1980s data collection was emphasised at the expense of interpretation, and monitoring programs were maintained at much higher levels than were in fact required. It is now clear that investigations are important and should be distinguished from monitoring programs, and that the timely interpretation of investigations and implementation of recommendations can greatly reduce the effort and expense that can be involved in a monitoring program. Monitoring programs based on a sound understanding of potential environmental impact may then be efficient and cost-effective, yet provide sufficient information to assess the environmental impact of mining, guide further environmental protection measures when problems are detected, and demonstrate compliance with regulatory requirements.

In April 1994 the Victorian Premier announced new State initiatives, collectively termed the Victorian Initiative for Minerals and Petroleum (VIMP), for exploration totalling $16.5 m over three years. The program, initially centred on the northwest of Victoria, the Eastern Highlands and the Otway Basin, is due for completion in June 1997 and has been designed to attract explorers to highly prospective but currently under-explored parts of the State. Major components of the program include acquisition of geophysical data (including airborne magnetics and radiometrics, gravity and seismic data), stratigraphic drilling, geological mapping and mineral resource data compilation. At the completion of the current program, 70 per cent of the State will have been covered by airborne magnetic and radiometric coverage at 400 m line spacing or better (Figure I) while 20 per cent of the State will have been covered by new geological mapping. The completion of database compilations for geochemistry, mine data and exploration licence summaries during the VIMP program is shown in Figure 2. The new airborne geophysical surveys have been flown partly under the VIMP program and partly by AGSO under the National Geoscience Mapping Accord (NGMA). Data from these surveys have been interpreted and incorporated into the geological mapping in order to enhance the quality of map products, especially in areas of Cainozoic cover. The first series 1:250 000 scale geological map coverage of Victoria was completed by the Geological Survey of Victoria (GSV) in 1977, and was based on compilation of historical geological mapping with minor field checking in most cases. The first metric 1:50 000 scale geology maps were also commenced in the 1970s, but were discontinued in the 1980s in favour of 1:100 000 scale map production. Driven by customer survey findings and with the benefit of detailed airborne geophysical data in the 1990s, the GSV reverted to 1:50 000 scale map production in 1995, with 1:10 000 scale maps made in areas of significant gold production. Geological reports still cover standard 1:100 000 scale map areas, but are now accompanied by four 1:50 000 scale maps. These new series 1:50 000 scale geological maps have been supported by comprehensive mine data and exploration licence summary databases in addition to the new geophysics, and benefit from the advances made in structural geological interpretation over the last decade. The new phase of geological mapping in Victoria, commenced under the NGMA in 1990 and accelerated under VIMP in 1994, has been focused in the central Victorian goldfields and eastern Highlands areas of the State (Figure 1). Results to-date have led to a number of major advances in the understanding of the eeoloeical evolution of Victoria.

Mount Isa Mines Limited has been mining silver-lead-zinc ore at Isa Mine for 60 years. Mining methods have evolved continuously, and current production rates of 4.7 Mt/yr are obtained from a combination of sublevel open stopping, cut and fill, and benching methods. In the near future, orebodies mineable by open stoping will be gradually depleted, and the relatively new benching method will be further refmed to replace cut and fill methods wherever possible.

Iron ore oxide and oxyhydroxide minerals such as haematite (eg various types of martite and microplaty haematite), different forms of goethite, magnetite, hydrohaematite and kenomagnetite were analysed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) techniques, to determine the type and proportion of deleterious elements present and the chemistry of associated gangue minerals. The aim was to characterise elements potentially deleterious for agglomeration and steelmaking, eg sulfur, phosphorus, aluminium and silicon and correlate their distribution with mineral texture and association, to provide feedback on downstream processing performance and product quality.Examples of characteristic mineral associations are shown from various genetic styles of iron ores, including magnetite banded iron formation (BIF), BIF-derived martite-goethite and skarn-type magnetite ores.A number of examples are presented demonstrating the benefits of the use of combined techniques of reflected optical microscopy, SEM and EPMA data to reliably identify ore and gangue minerals and their associations in different types of iron ores.

With the increasing sophistication of real-time sampling devices for occupational hygiene exposure assessment, research to objectively assess their performance is a priority. Using real-time monitoring equipment has several advantages over established gravimetric sampling methods, particularly their immediate results, lower overall long-term costs and no laboratory analysis costs, which are appealing to the mining industry due to the ongoing occupational hygiene monitoring programs required by the various regulatory agencies.

Sensor-based particle sorting of gold ores is the masterclass of preconcentration. The technical challenges of a grade in ppm scale makes a direct detection with currently available technology in milliseconds impossible. Consequently, the detection and classification of particles into ore and waste classes relies on detectable proxies which are the foundation for the classification. These must be reliable and repeatable across the ore bodies processed in future. A sensor-based particle ore sorting equipment must therefore be calibrated systematically by understanding the gold deportation in different lithological groups. Also, it must be in best operational state to minimise possible misplacement. The technical challenges are met by a stringent financial regime governing the business case. Many gold ore sorting projects require a stable grade of gold in the rejected waste significantly below 1gr/t. Two examples are introduced in this paper:  The pilot results and operational experience of X-ray transmission (XRT)-based particle ore sorting for pebble sorting of sulphide associated ore;  Laser-based particle ore sorting for pebble circuit of an orogenic, quartz associated gold ore. Usually, sensor-based particle sorters are installed in the crushing section of a plant. However, for large capacity plants, the number of equipment required, and the associated material handling costs result in significant capital and operating expenses for plants with 1200tph run-of-mine capacity. As a conclusion, it was decided to investigate sensor-based particle ore sorting applied to the pebble stream of two existing semi autogenous mills.

Tongkuangyu Copper Mine is currently the only mine in China employing block caving. It comprises two large orebodies known as the No 4 orebody and the No 5 orebody. They are approximately 50° in dip angle, 80 to 240 m in width and 800–1000 m in strike length. The two orebodies are separated by a distance of 110–130 m. Production with block caving originally, ie Phase 1 project started at Tongkuangyu from the first undercut at a depth of 200–300 m below the ground surface and designated as Lift 810 m in late 1989 and has continued to the present. During the last 25 years Tongkuangyu has mined three lifts: Lifts 810 m, 690 m and 530 m. The previous two lifts utilised a slusher process with an annual designed production rate of 4 Mt. In this context the lift name represents the elevation of track haul level.The Tongkuangyu Phase 2 project serves for two lifts (ie Lift 530 m and 410 m) under the elevation of 690 m and the annual designed production rate is 6 Mt. Since the orebody is approximately 50° in dip angle, it is originally designed that production at Lift 530 m is comprised of one main extraction level and two auxiliary extraction levels in the footwall and undercutting is started from one end of the extraction footprint forward to another end, which is from north-east to south-west.Production at Lift 530 m started from March 2011 and reached to 6.39 Mt in 2013 and 6.9 Mt in 2014. Additionally, Tongkuangyu improved block caving processes and used modern mining equipment, which differ from the previous two lifts. Blastholes for undercutting and drawbell-preparation are now drilled using jumbos. The blasted ore is transferred to the underground crushing station via 10 t electric load-haul-dumps (LHDs) and then delivered to surface via a belt conveyor 3200 m long.Due to increasing ground pressure, a consequence of mining depth increase, stress abutment and inadequate support, significant damage occurred at the Tongkuangyu Copper Mine with production at Lift 530 m. This resulted in significant production delays and rehabilitation costs. A series of improvements have since been implemented including an advanced undercut sequence and increased ground support. All of these improvements have allowed Tongkuangyu to alleviate ground control issues, reduce operating costs and ensure safe production.CITATION:Liu, Y M and Bian, K W, 2016. The steel industry occupies 14 per cent of CO2 emissions in Japan, and the sintering process is one of the major emitters. Since most of CO2 released from the sintering process comes from coke fine combustion, replacement of coke fines with biomass char as bonding agent is a potential countermeasure. In order to explore the effective use of biomass char, we chose char made from Palm Kernel Shell (PKS) as a sample. First, the char’s combustion behaviour was examined with varying the char’s particle size by means of admixing the char in alumina ball packed bed placed in an electric furnace. As a result, the finer the PKS char the faster the burning rate and reaching a higher temperature compared to coke fine. In addition, it is also concluded that the optimum size of PKS char was larger than coke fines. Next, the effect of different heat profiles on sinter structure was examined by sintering tablet made of chemical reagents. In this experiment, the chemical composition is designed based on sinter composition. By this sintering test, even at high temperature, rapid cooling is effective to make fine sinter matrix and fine pores, which has possibility for high sinter reducibility. Based on these two experiments, using PKS char as a sinter fine source has the possibility to improve sinter reducibility.

Energy Resources of Australia Ltd - Ranger Mine is located about 255 kilometres east of Darwin in the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory. The Ranger project is surrounded by Kakadu National Park which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. . Ranger Mine operates the largest uranium mine and processing plant in Australia. It is designed to produce 3000 tonnes of uranium oxide per year, but presently is producing a little less than one half that figure due to the depressed uranium market. The safety performance of the employees and Ranger as a whole continues to improve. The lost time injuries (LTI) have significantly reduced from 74 in 1985 to five in 1994. The total days lost due to LTIs have gone from 1543 to 14. These significant improvements have reflected directly on workers' compensation premiums in which a four-fold reduction has occurred. It is estimated that the actual monetary saving to the company is about $1.3 million per year and directly reports to the profit of the company. There is also an obvious and significant reduction in the less quantifiable costs such as the suffering of the injured employees and cost to society. The paper will review the various initiatives introduced and assess their effectiveness. Performance improvement is primarily dependent on the commitment, introduction of various initiatives and the subsequent change in workplace culture.

Coal mining ceased at Strongman Mine this year after 70 years of production. Underground mining finished in 2003 and opencast methods began in 1998. During the life of the mine, 8 million tonnes of coal was extracted from two underground mines and 1.2 million tonnes removed through opencast methods. Strongman Mine is within the Grey Coal Fields; various seams have been extracted from the Rewanui Coal Measures. Coal extracted was predominantly of thermal or semi-soft specifications and characterised by low sulphur and low ash.   The area has steep topography, high rainfall (>3000 mm/yr) and is particularly exposed to westerly quarter winds. Strongman 1 and 2 underground mines are located in the steep, narrow valley which leads to the Strongman Opencast at the top of the valley. Subsidence from underground mining combined with spontaneous combustion, has resulted in an underground fire which has had substantial surface effects. Opencast mining in the steep topography resulted in several landslides at the perimeters of the site. These factors, along with water management, topsoil management and erosion control have added to the complexity of rehabilitating the site.   Rehabilitation of the site is well underway, including infrastructure removal, final landform creation and revegetation of the Strongman Opencast footprint (~45 hectares). Some innovative methods of rehabilitation have been trialled. Successful trials such as helicopter-seeding and moss hydro-seeding on highwalls are now routinely used along with traditional revegetation practices. 18 hectares disturbed land has been replanted with 88 000 seedlings, and another 200 000 seedlings are scheduled for planting over the three years. Fire management is an ongoing challenge; however thermal photography shows a steady decrease in hot areas which have been contained by grout curtains.   Mine closure is some time away and will occur after all standards set by Solid Energy and regulatory bodies are achieved.

Processing of lead-zinc and copper ores by Mount Isa Mines Limited produces large quantit- ies of concentrator tailings waste which is pumped as a slurry to special dams where the solids are allowed to settle and dry out. These areas are unattractive and show no signs of encroachment by plant life even though the surfaces of some dams have remained undisturbed for more than a decade. During 1970 Mount Isa Mines Limited commenced a long term research program in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, University of Queensland to deter- mine possible methods of establishing a plant cover on this material. Research has defined the major factors limiting plant growth in the tailings medium. Modification of the edaphic conditions through fertilizer inputs, particularly of phosphorus and nitrogen, and alteration of "soil" physical properties by incorporation of mulching mater- ials, provided conditions which allowed plant growth. The outstanding "soil" amendment treatment was incorporation of fly ash, a waste product of the company's coal fired power stations. A range of crop and pasture species have been selected which have grown well with adequate irrigation under the amended conditions in the field. Further research is assessing a range of native plant species and agronomic techniques to provide a stable plant cover on the tailings dams.

Beneficiation of low-grade fine-grained hematite ores becomes increasingly important due to rapid depletion of high quality iron ore resources. However, fine particles, especially ultra-fine particles, make efficient beneficiation of these ores more difficult. Therefore, methods to reduce the influence of fine particles must be considered to achieve better beneficiation performance. Analysis and systematical beneficiation tests were carried out on an ultra-fine-grained hematite ore slime from washing a fine grained hematite ore. Ore particles were found to be presented in loose soil. While some of the ore particles were agglomerated, they were very fine and contained up to 76.5 per cent -0.023 mm material. In this paper, using a single magnetic separation flow sheet with sodium silicate (SS) as a dispersing agent, a concentrate containing 65.05 per cent Fe was obtained at an iron recovery of 68.58 per cent from the hematite ore slime of 56.65 per cent Fe. The single magnetic separation flow sheet was simple and reliable, the agent SS was effective in dispersing ultra-fine particles. Education for the Mineral Industry in Australia developed in an uncoordinated but effective fashion till the mid 1960's, with recognised quality in graduates, with output matching demand, and with industry needs being fulfilled. Then in the space of a further 20 years, as company structures expanded, as the number, complexity, and costs of mineral projects escalated, as educational facilities, costs and politics increased, as community perceptions and aspirations changed, as government control of minerals and education increased, and as mineral sales cycles and markets fluctuated widely, the very fabric of Australian Mineral Education fell in tatters. Extractive Metallurgy Education suffered most in this collapse, and no compre- hensive remedies have been initiated. We are all the losers. In the 1990's, the extraction of Australian minerals and metals will increase in international significance, and the education of Extractive Metallurgists must meet this need. After examining the current situation, a series of management strategies are proposed to enable Extractive Metallurgical Education to survive and prosper in the next two decades and beyond. These strategic proposals involve industry, the government, the educational bodies, and individuals, in a range of short and long term objectives, policies, and actions.

Safety and health at work is about people. It is about people who plan for work, organise work and perform work. It is about those who come in contact with the workplace and those who are responsible for the workplace. There are wider ranging safety and health obligations that are imposed on the industry stakeholders that span all phases of the production process. In all cases, those responsible for discharging the obligations must ask the questions: Is what we propose safe?, can it be done safer? and are we sure? What we learn from recent legal cases before the courts is that it is essential that all stakeholders work together in a collaborative way when discharging these obligations. Safety and health at work cannot become an issue that is viewed only through the eyes of a single stakeholder group. The reason for this is quite simple. The interrelatedness of the responsibilities that are imposed on each of the stakeholder groups, means that the performance based legislation simply wont work, where an active model of communication and consultation is not in place.

Pike River Coal Limited (PRCL) is developing the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine is being developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km northeast of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners, road-headers and hydraulic extraction.   The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park. The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumped down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.   PRCL faces significant challenges to achieving the goal of cost effective production. The remoteness, high rainfall (greater then 6 metres per year on average), temperature variation and restrictions on access to this subalpine environment have driven the project to develop some distinctive solutions. These include the establishment of survey control in such a difficult environment with vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, significant vegetation and steep slopes by using helicopter survey, aerial photography and LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) aerial survey. PRCL has also commenced designing the placement of the main ventilation fans in an underground chamber in the stone drive.
