An essential requirement of product quality control in the mining industry is to be able to reliably predict key quality properties of finished product from the data available before the extraction of the ore. From a production viewpoint, the unit of data collection is generally the input and output data set for each shift of crusher production, but could be any period where mine precrusher data can be reliably matched with product data.This paper demonstrates that linear regression models can be used to predict crush grades from blast grades, even where the crush material is blended from multiple sources or pits for each of which differing regression models might apply. The advantage of using increasingly complex regressions models to match the available data to give increasingly more powerful models is examined. The best model for any application will be a balance between required predictability, available data and the business’ tolerance for complex models.The regression modelling approach has several advantages over the more classic method of run-of-mine (ROM) crusher trials, which will be discussed.The models can use any predictor variable such as grade, geotype and in situ density provided the preextraction data set can be reliably matched with post-crusher data and is significant as a predictor. The models have been used extensively in the generation of the daily crusher plan with the aim of maintaining finished product grade. This approach has also been used associated with exploration drilling and long-term planning.It is acknowledged that there are inherent problems in fitting lump and fines grade to a linear model. However, these problems are minor when they are used for interpolation within the window spanned by the shift blend records used to produce the model. This paper discusses some of the issues limiting linear regression models in this application, and suggests methods enabling consistent models to be formulated

The design of mine ventilation systems for the BHP Steel Division Collieries is based on the acquisition of ventilation survey data for the establishment of a realistic computer net- work model. The branches which form the net- work for the computer models are calculated from a range of resistance factors incorporat- ing both a frictional and shock loss component. Since shock losses can account for up to 30 per cent of the total energy losses in mine airways the use of friction factors alone without accounting for shock losses will result in the choosing of an insufficiently performing fan. Published tables of friction factors have in- variably been taken from metalliferous or single entry studies and consequently are not reliable for Australia's mining conditions where multiple entries with regularly spaced cut-throughs are the normal practice. Typical resistance factors for roadways of rectangular cross-section 5.5 m x 2.0 m, with coal sides, have been found to vary from 0.11 Ns2/m8/km where no timber supports are used, to 0.98 Ns2/m8/km where double centre legging together with wooden chocks is used. In addition to the range of resistance factors due to varying support methods, the nature of use for a roadway is very significant because of the condition of repair and upkeep maintained.

This paper summarises the research, development and initial application of a sensing platform that has the potential to monitor subsurface deformations, pore pressure and other variables simultaneously to gain a better understanding of rock mass behaviour. The platform is based on Networked Smart Markers (NSMs) devices, which, with their ability for wireless communication between individual sensors and the possibility of real-time data acquisition and processing, will assist in the development of predictive tools to better assess rock mass behaviour.A good opportunity to implement this technology is in the specific application of transitioning from an open pit mine to an underground caving operation. One of the key elements to maintaining the mining business during such a transition is having a good understanding of the unique geotechnical conditions of mutual influence created during the open pit to underground interaction. The knowledge acquisition will require the implementation of a robust platform for geotechnical monitoring, which could be enhanced by incorporating the NSMs. The integration of sensors within the NSMs would enable the collection of additional data about rock mass behaviour (ie caving propagation and crown pillar fracturing), which could be used to improve the management of mining operations and, specifically, allow the development of reliable predictive tools based on the data collected.CITATION:Widzyk-Capehart, E, Hölck Teuber, C, Fredes, O, Rivero, V, Sanchez, E, Pedemonte, I, Gonzalez, N and Steffen, S, 2016. Bendigo is AustraliaÆs second-most productive goldfield, having produced some 22 million ounces of gold between 1851 and 1954. Bendigo Mining Limited (BML), the sole lease-holder of the Bendigo Goldfield, is developing a mine that is planned to produce ore from beneath the historical workings for at least the next 25 years. The high-grade Bendigo reefs occur in the proximity of the chevron anticlines, which characterise the goldfield. Typically the reefs display relatively small cross-sectional areas and large (subhorizontal) strike dimensions. They occur in clusters due to interrelated structural controls. Most of the gold occurs as visible grains and laminae, and as such grade estimation is not amenable to ænormalÆ sampling and estimation techniques. The initial phases of exploration and development of the mine focused on understanding and resolving these sampling and estimation issues. In 2005, BML reviewed and updated the March 2004 Feasibility Study, refining the life of mine development strategy. The strategy fundamentally aims to exploit the 11 million ounce Inferred Resource and additional exploration potential by developing the current Kangaroo Flat Mine to produce ore at an initial rate of 450 000 t/yr in 2006/07, expanding to 600 000 t/yr by 2009/10; and developing the Eaglehawk Mine to produce 1 Mt/yr by 2011/12. Ore will be processed initially at the Kangaroo Flat site, and from 2011/12 also at the Eaglehawk Mine 1 Mt/yr processing plant. The two mines will connect underground in 2009. Total ore treatment capacity will be 1.6 Mt/yr, producing 600 000 oz/yr from a head grade of 12.7 g/t gold. The project is planned to operate for 25 years, processing 33.6 Mt of ore producing 13.7 Moz of gold. To achieve this production rate, the exploration and ore delineation programs will require up to 16 diamond drill rigs producing over 200 km of core per year. At the same time, approximately 8 km of on-reef development must be monitored and typically 18 stopes managed concurrently. The processing plants will be located in geographically constrained areas, which will limit the ability for selective stockpiling and campaign treatment.

This paper shows an economic feasible approach to implement greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction measures into the mining and metallurgy industry (MMI). The goal to improve energy consumption is directly linked to the reduction of GHG emissions in the MMI. A baseline scenario of the considered reference system and of the respective reference year has to be designed and analysed. In a second step an analysis of the same operation using the best available technology (BAT) processes is carried out to generate a basis for a benchmark system. The identified gaps will be reported and the potential GHG emission reductions will be put into relation to the investment, running cost and generated carbon credits of the new process technologies to be implemented. This economic feasibility calculation is necessary to realise a cost efficient GHG reduction roadmap decision-making for implementing new technology into the companyÆs business operations. The GHG reduction roadmap is developed using the marginal abatement curve approach.

The mining sector has been a leader in investing in safety improvement initiatives, yet relatively few mining organisations can accurately track the positive effects of these initiatives or identify areas that may require more attention. The consequences of not taking safety seriously are severe, and unfortunately injuries and fatalities are continuing to occur across the mining sector (Brady, 2019). There is a tendency to turn to lag indicators such as All Injury Frequency Rate (AIFR), Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate (TRIFR), and Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) to track these outcomes. As outlined below these approaches are inherently flawed and a renewed focus is needed on indicators within the control of leaders, indicators that have high predictive validity for future events and data that is used in a way to enable learning and change.

The efficiency of the Australian and New Zealand stock exchanges relies on a fully informed market: shareholders and investors are fully and transparently informed of all material information relating to the shares. These principles of transparency and materiality are similarly core to the Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the JORC Code). The JORC (Joint Ore Reserves Committee) Code also includes a principle of competency to ensure that the person providing the material information for public disclosure is suitably qualified and experienced.Since its inclusion into the ASX (Australian Securities Exchange) Listing rules in 1989, the JORC Code has continually improved and evolved in attempts to meet the market’s need for competent, transparent and informed disclosure. The quality and effectiveness of Public Reporting in accordance with the JORC Code is under constant challenge: some practitioners argue there is insufficient regulation, while others argue the need for greater self-regulation.This paper contributes to that discourse by exploring how well the Reporting expectations are met, and, whether Public Reporting in accordance with the JORC Code has a material impact on share-price movement.CITATION:Sterk, R and Coombes, J, 2017. The Ravenswood Mine in North Queensland is the first gold mine developed by Carpentaria Gold Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of MIM Holdings Ltd. Carpentaria Exploration Pty Ltd began exploration at Ravenswood in 1978. However initial exploration of the main gold producing area (Buck Reef East) commenced in March 1987 when exploration rights to four key leases were secured. A rapid, co-ordinated exploration and development program produced gold from a heap leach operation nine months after the first costeans were dug at Buck Reef East. To treat higher grade ore found at depth in the Buck Reef East pit and the metallurgically more difficult Buck Reef West ore, a carbon in pulp plant was commissioned in May 1988. The mine is currently producing at a rate of approximately 40 000 ounces of gold per year. Ore at Ravenswood is hosted by hydrothermally altered diorites and tonalites of the Ravenswood Granodiorite complex. Alteration is controlled by planes of permeability formed by joints, shear zones and dilational breccias. The complex orebody geometry resulting from these controls required very detailed surface and drill exploration for adequate definition. Carpentaria's need for early cash flow meant that economic, mining and metallurgical considerations governed choices of exploration techniques, program timing, material and data collected. The initial reserve of 1.1 mt @ 2.87 g/t Au was defined by sectional polygonal methods. Grade control is based on geologic mapping and blast hole or channel sample assays. Ore is batched through the crusher and sampled to monitor grade control and mining performance. Minimal dilution has occurred. Gold content is greater than predicted by the reserve. Sprinkling of heaps commenced in November 1987. Changes have been made to the pad design and to the method of heap construction. Heap leach ore is treated at a rate of 400 000 tpa.

Gold production from The Granites - Tanami Goldfield during 1993 is expected to exceed 8 t, eclipsing that of the traditional Northern Territory gold mining districts of Tennant Creek and Pine Creek. This is the result of dedicated and successful exploration, and the consequent discovery of new orebodies such as those at Dead Bullock Soak.Following granting of access to regional exploration areas in 1988 and identification of favourable host rocks in the Schist Hills area, North Flinders Mines (NFM) began a methodical exploration program of detailed geological mapping, rock chip sampling, costeaning and various types of drilling. The first resource of 600 000 t of 3.3 g/t gold was announced in mid-1989. This has grown progressively with systematic exploration to the currently published resource inventory of 6.6 mT @ 5.4 g/t, (as at 31.12.92) contained in six separate orebodies within the Dead Bullock Soak Mineral Lease at Schist Hills.

All mines face water management challenges. Adopting leading practice water management strategies can help reduce both operational and strategic risks. While many of the water issues faced by underground mines are the same as other operations, underground mining presents some unique water management challenges. In this paper we review trends in underground mining, water use and associated water issues. We then compile a structured set of strategic and operational risks that are pertinent to underground operations. The causes, threats, opportunities and measures for controlling or mitigating the risks are summarised. The risk compilation could provide an addendum for underground operations to the Australian governments leading practice water management handbook.

Pyrrhotite is the predominant gangue mineral at Renison comprising about 60 percent of the sulphides in an average ore blend. It exists as two crystal structures - monoclinic and hexagonal. Monoclinic pyrrhotite is the slowest floating of all minerals but is ferromagnetic and hence recoverable more efficiently by low intensity magnetic wet drum separators than flotation. This paper discusses the installation and commissioning of four 0.915 m x 3.0 m, 0.1 Tesla permanent magnet, wet drum separators prior to sulphide roughing flotation. Planned circuit and process control modifications to better accommodate magnetic separation into Renison's flowsheet will be Discussed.

A quantitative knowledge of underground mine ventilation requirements and conditions has become increasingly important, both to meet statutory requirements and to ensure high levels of safety and productivity within mines. The ACIRL Mine Ventilation System MINVENT was designed to provide a flexible means of analysing the behaviour of an underground mine ventilation system under a variety of conditions. It is not sufficient to rely solely on the analytical tools such as ventilation network analysis computer programs - these must be supported by the expertise necessary to conduct an accurate underground ventilation survey as well as experience of typical conditions to be expected in the evaluation of proposed extensions to a new or existing mine. When planning a new mine, the ventilation engineer can use the program to draw on a set of typical ventilation parameters, seam and proposed mining methods. These have been assembled as a result of numerous ventilation surveys conducted by ACIRL in New South Wales and Queensland.

This paper details successful implementation of a revolutionary pit access system involving excavation of an 'in-the-wall' ramp at Three Mile Hill open pit operated by Gold Mines of Coolgardie, formerly Goldfan Limited, at Coolgardie, Western Australia. Three Mile Hill is a medium-size, open pit, gold operation typified by hard, competent, fresh rock conditions from near surface. The project involved construction of a haulage tunnel or decline access located in the wall of an open pit in place of a conventional pit access ramp. Works undertaken as discussed herein included excavation, support, ventilation, dewatering, services installation, commissioning and monitoring. Prior to implementation, the conventional hardrock pit slopes and designs were constrained by the presence of infrastructure and a main road to the North and by adjoining leases to the Southeast. The combination of these factors and economic considerations resulted in a decision to proceed with an innovative in-the-wall ramp access system that is believed to be the first of its type in Australia. Back-analysis indicates that implementation resulted in a cost saving of as much as A$3.6 million and increased mineable pit reserves. The paper deals with the successful implementation and operation of the in-the-wall ramp haulage as well as an economic evaluation that is aimed at drawing some general conclusions on favourable conditions for implementation in other mining scenarios.

"Screw press technology is an innovative approach to tackling the growing pressure to conserve water and minimise the environmental impact of mineral tailings disposal. The principles of the technology have been known for a considerable period of time in non-mining applications such as water treatment, wastewater (municipal sludge), as well as in the paper and chemical industries for dewatering solids, particularly those containing clays.The screw press represents a viable niche technology for filtering fine and high-clay tailings, without the prior thickening stage, and is capable of producing a filtered product that is sufficiently consolidated and dry enough to provide a product suitable for conveying and dry stacking.The Ishigaki screw press was introduced in 1990 and key features are: continuous operation and excellent availability low wear to plant acceptable flocculant consumption low carbon footprint and low noise levels fully automatic.These features lead to simpler plant layouts, easier maintenance, smaller spares inventories, reduced wear, smaller footprint and overall lower capital and operating costs.The amenability of a particular tailing stream to treatment by screw press technology may be determined by test work. Two pilot plant studies are described where this technology has been applied in the mineral industry being flotation tailings from a rare earth (RE) mineral concentrator and coal tailings. Silicomanganese (SiMn), containing approximately 16–30 per cent Si, is produced in submerged arc furnaces using various Mn sources and quartz as the primary raw materials, along with fluxes and reductants. In the high-temperature zone known as the coke bed, a silica-rich slag is formed. SiMn is produced through the reduction of SiO2 from the slag. Dissolution of quartz into slags with different compositions, the primary slag formed from the Mn sources and flux before any MnO reduction occurred, representing conditions at the top of the coke bed, and dissolution of quartz into a partially reduced slag to simulate conditions inside the coke bed has been investigated. Experimental investigations were carried out to study the dissolution of quartz particles of varying sizes, 5 mm and 25 mm in synthetic slags with different compositions at temperatures between 1400°C and 1600°C, with varying holding times. Observed results are compared with liquidus compositions and equilibrium phases for original and formed slags. Particle size has been shown to be of little importance for the dissolution. Quartz dissolved more easily in slag at top of the coke bed than slag in the coke bed. Complete dissolution was observed after 30 mins at 1600°C in all cases, but not after 0 mins.

Across the life-of-mine, water is both an essential commodity to mining, and one of the most significant hazards. In Australia, a land of drought and floods, availability of water is a critical strategic risk for mine sites and neighbouring stakeholders, with both insufficient water leading to curtailed operations and contested space, and extreme water closing operations through flooding of mine sites, transportation infrastructure and unplanned regulatory restrictions. In addition to these major strategic risks, water must be addressed in operational risk management activities in many different ways.This paper develops a set of categories for classification of water risks based on academic papers from the water in mining literature. These categories are applied to media content analysis of articles in International Longwall News (ILN) (an online coal industry news site) obtained with the search terms ‘water’, ‘rain’ and ‘flood’. Identified risks are discussed within the context of the life-of-mine. The paper uses these same categories to analyse the treatment of water risks in a new coal industry risk management body of knowledge called RISKGATE (http://www.riskgate.org, Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre, The University of Queensland). The discussion of water risks in both INL and RISKGATE is compared and contrasted to pinpoint opportunities (and a roadmap) for further development of a specific RISKGATE water module for site-based operations. Mechanised sub-level stoping is one of the most widely accepted stoping practices followed in base metal mines in India. As a general practice, blast-scheduling of rings in these stopes is done either heuristically or randomly which leads to a high fluctuation in ore grade when drawn and delivered to the mill. In this paper, dynamic programming has been investigated as an optimisation technique for optimal blast-scheduling of rings. A microcomputer based dynamic programming algorithm has been developed in C language which runs under the UNIX environment. A case study based on Indian mine data is presented to demonstrate the application of the dynamic programming concept and use of the developed software. It is concluded that dynamic programming can be used as a production planning tool in Indian mines practicing sub-level stoping and following heuristic/random approaches for blast-scheduling of rings.

The Research Centres Program initiated by the Federal Government and supported by the mining industry has had a major impact on geoscience research and education during the past five years. Eight major university based-Geoscience Research Centres are currently supported by the Government, including four Key Centres of Teaching and Research and a further four Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs). The Research Centres Program has led to a concentration of high quality research and teaching in areas of demand and strategic importance creating strong university - industry linkages and a source of well trained and motivated graduates. Over the last decade Australia's reputation as a leader in mineral exploration and ore deposit research has grown substantially, in part because of the development of the Research Centres Program, and to increased collaboration and interaction between research groups and exploration geoscientists across the industry. During a period when ore deposit research activity has been decreasing in other countries (eg USA, Canada, Japan and most European countries), equivalent research activities in Australia have been increasing, within a well co-ordinated national framework. The future challenge for universities and the mining industry will be to maintain the momentum of the successful research centres in order for the centres to become self-funding over a six- to nine-year period.

On 8 July 1993, a landslide of about one million cubic metres of rock blocked the river Satluj near Sanjay Vidyut Pariyojana - Bhaba project and caused flooding into the Bhaba Power House (120 MW) resulting in suspension of power generation. The concerned authorities desired an early removal of the blockade by an underwater blasting operation into the over topping water to reduce the water level at the blockade and resume power generation in the power house. In the absence of underwater drilling, it was essential for the blasting technique to be used where no cavity to confine the explosive was required. For this reason mud capping and plaster shooting with directional throw were used and additional specially fabricated mild steel pipe charges were used under high current for an underwater trenching operation. By employing these techniques the river blockade was removed up to the required depth and on 8 September 1993 the Power House resumed the power generation.

At Cominco's Zinc Refinery at Trail, British Columbia impurities are removed from zinc sulphate electrolyte by a two-stage purification process using zinc dust. Copper, cadmium and thallium are removed in the first stage whereas cobalt is removed in the second stage. Cobalt removal kinetics are affected by soluble antimony and copper additions to the electrolyte. This study was focused on the kinetics of cobalt removal by zinc powder cementation. Experimental variables included copper and antimony concentrations, pH and temperature. Common organic additives employed in zinc plants were studied to determine potential interactions with the cobalt removal process. Cementation products obtained from laboratory experiments and plant practice were studied using SEM. A number of significant results were obtained: 1. Copper and antimony ions were sustantially removed from solution during the early stages of the cementation reaction (within the first 15 minutes). Cobalt cementation kinetics are slow and follow a first order kinetic regime. 2. A drop in the cobalt removal rates can be correlated with a rise in the Eh of the slurry. 3. Ligninsulphonate, Percol 351 and animal glue at levels of 2 mg/L significantly impede cobalt cementation.
