Recent advances in ruggedised industrial control system technology and architecture in combination with latest technologies in the fast-evolving 3D LiDAR sensor sector becoming available have enabled the implementation of sophisticated automation algorithms for mining equipment such as bucket wheel reclaimers, as published by the authors in the peer reviewed AusIMM 2019 Iron Ore conference proceedings. This paper provides an overview of a second use case for such automation technology in bulk material ports integral to iron ore operations. The real-time 3D machine-vision based port automation system described in this paper was originally developed for the BHP-Mitsubishi Alliance’s (BMA) Hay Point port. The system has seen deployment at other major mining and general ports in Australia, such as at Dalrymple Bay Terminal (DBT) (shown in Figure 1) managed by Dalrymple Bay Infrastructure Management (DBIM), Hay Point, Queensland. Geotechnical instrumentation has been implemented as a key step for monitoring and optimising an engineered mine design for managing seismicity at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine. Measurements of displacement, stress change, ground control element load and seismic response of the rock mass allow for back analysis and calibration of critical parameters for feedback into the engineering design loop. Instrument clusters are installed in strategic locations prior to the commencement of stoping in order to determine the nature of the response of the rock mass to stoping. A selection of instruments including instrumented cable bolts and rod extensometers, resistance wire extensometers, hollow inclusion stress cells, vibrating wire stress meters and resistance wire extensometers are used to gather data through a data logging system. The rate at which data is recorded is adjusted to provide more information during periods of anticipated rapid change such as around stope firings or during periods of high seismic activity, and less information during periods of anticipated quiescence. The twofold purpose of the instrumentation is to calibrate the numerical modelling output which forms the basis of the engineered mine design, and to provide an alert mechanism where the behaviour of the rock mass is not what was anticipated, or where the impact of that behaviour may compromise the integrity of the engineered ground control system. The paper describes the location of instrument clusters with respect to stoping, the type of instruments employed and the method of data acquisition. It provides examples of results obtained and illustrates the way in which that information is used to optimise the mine design and manage seismicity.

The Eleonore property (James Bay district of Northern QuTbec), owned by Goldcorp, hosts gold within stockworks of quartz-tourmaline-arsenopyrite veins and veinlets contained within microcline (potassic alteration) and brown tourmaline replacement zones. The preliminary investigation to recover gold from drill core samples showed that flotation followed by ultra-fine grinding and cyanidation is the preferred option. Ultra-fine grinding is used to liberate gold finely disseminated in sulfides. The flotation concentrate used in the investigation had a P80 of 11 ¦ and contained 75.5 g/t Au, 5.0 g/t Ag, 10.3 per cent S, 0.07 per cent Cu and traces of antimony (0.03 per cent). The mineralogical characterisation showed the presence of 65 per cent gangue minerals, 23 per cent pyrrhotite (hexagonal), 9.6 per cent arsenopyrite, 2.2 per cent pyrite and 0.08 per cent chalcopyrite with trace amounts of galena (0.05 per cent) and sphalerite (0.03 per cent). Gold was in the form of native gold and electrum. A straight cyanidation conducted at pH 11.0, DO of 3 - 5 ppm, 2000 ppm NaCN, 20¦C and for 72 hours extracted 97.0 per cent Au and consumed 31.5 kg/t NaCN. The equilibrium was reached within 24 hours. Increasing the dissolved oxygen to 16 ppm reduced the consumption of cyanide to 22.0 kg/t with 96.7 per cent Au extraction. A 16-hour pretreatment with 2.0 kg/t lead nitrate, followed by a 24-hour cyanidation reduced the cyanide consumption to 6.0 kg/t with a gold extraction of 97.5 per cent. Increasing the lead nitrate addition to 6.0 kg/t reduced the cyanide consumption to 1.2 kg/t by passivating the surface of pyrrhotite. The gold extraction remained at 97.0 per cent. It was possible to decrease the concentration of cyanide to 800 ppm NaCN without compromising gold extraction. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.2 kg/t NaCN. The passivation of gold grains was an issue when the cyanide concentration was decreased to 550 ppm NaCN. The gold extraction decreased to 92.2 per cent. The average lime addition for all the tests was 7.4 kg/t and the average silver extraction was 80 per cent. Efficient cyanidation of an ultra-fine sulfide concentrate with only 800 ppm NaCN represents an advance in leaching of ultra-fine sulfide concentrates. The high addition of lead nitrate would certainly make cyanide destruction easier; consequently reducing the effluent treatment costs and making possible to meet the discharge regulations criteria.CITATION:DeschOnes, G and Fulton, M, 2013. It is challenging to determine the optimal mining strategy to maximise value when a mine plan includes mineralised material which does not meet the full cost of mining but has value exceeding the variable cost of mining (‘marginal material’). Mining too much marginal material dilutes the operation’s head grade and undermines profitability. Conversely, leaving too much metal behind fails to achieve the full value of the endowment. Finding the balance between the two will maximise value delivered from the asset. This dilemma has traditionally been approached by calculating a suite of cut-off grades to define the grade of material that meets economic targets for an orebody (or zone within) and should therefore be included in the mine plan. A problem with this approach is that individual mining blocks within the zone have different costs, value and confidence levels, with each having economic co-dependencies between them. Blocks of identical grade but different mining contexts will have distinctly different economic outcomes. For example: • a block may be a low-grade increment or shell around a higher-grade stope; • a block may be available to be mined when there is spare mining capacity; or • a block may defer access to significantly higher cash flow material. Each of these circumstances would result in different value from the blocks if included as part of the mine plan. Cut-off grades calculated as averages over zones of material, or in isolation from schedule-based information, are missing the entire mining context that determines the ultimate economic outcome of making a mining decision. There are tools and techniques available to address this for open pit mining, however underground mining has different nuances. There are more intricate economic and physical dependencies between potential ore blocks, and importantly, the decision to leave material in situ can be made at any time. The case study in this paper explores a new methodology for underground mining, targeted towards strategic planning applications. It examines whether the economic logic usually applied via cut-off calculations can be implemented in the schedule so that optimal economic decisions can be made on a block-by-block basis, taking into account the mining context of the block, with the objective to maximise asset value. The results of the case study scenarios in Table 1 demonstrate the magnitude of the potential improvement in NPV that can be attained by a block by block valuation approach

The moisture content of iron ore during handling can range from the dust extinction moisture at the point of arrival at the port to the transportable moisture limit at the point of loading ships for maritime transport. Moisture content and ore composition, specifically fines content, have a large influence on ore flowability. Typically, elevated moisture can result in bottlenecks, downtime and lost productivity due to build-up, conveyor carry-back and blockages, increasing maintenance costs. On the other hand, low moisture can result in increased dust emissions influencing the environmental footprint and product losses. Managing the use of water across the supply chain is therefore critical for service life of equipment, productivity, but also has environmental and social impacts, affecting the social license to operate. Previously, experiments have shown that oscillations induced in iron ore during handling and transport can result in movement of moisture through the ore. This kind of moisture migration depends on the nature of these oscillations, such as the undulation of idlers during conveying, the inherent ore properties and the initial moisture content. Moisture has been observed to move either upwards and/or towards the bottom of the burden. These effects can be exploited to remove excess water from the ore influencing handleability and operation, however, the actual mechanisms of moisture migration are currently poorly understood. The study presented herein involves the use of simulation to examine moisture and ore interactions. Simulations using discrete element method (DEM) and coupled with smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) are implemented to investigate the behaviour of moisture in wet ore in the presence of oscillation. This is conducted at a fundamental level first using glass beads and water which is then compared to iron ore at high moisture content. The results of the modelling are discussed in view of experiments conducted.

A paper identifying anticipated challenges in the extraction of the N3500 Orebody at Glencore Xstrata Copper’s Mount Isa Copper Operations was written in 2007. The paper identified the depth of the deposit, the anticipated high stresses, talc alteration and issues with ground support as factors that may affect production. A number of strategies were planned to cope with these issues. After six years of extraction those strategies are evaluated and additional measures taken are outlined. Social licence to operate is becoming part of a mining company’s DNA in the same way as health and safety. Consequently, mining companies are receiving increasing pressure from their shareholders to ensure that they add enduring value to the local communities in which they operate. Apart from the shareholders, a company has responsibility to suppliers, customers, employees, the government and the community, which means under the social responsibility model they must be accountable to the other stakeholders. External and internal challenges in mining are increasing the difficulty and complexity of mines to operate. The external mining environment has a big impact on mining operations and is driving matters such as the focus on safety, responsible mining and resource management, sustainability issues, profitability and productivity. Considering this, it is expected that the widespread implementation of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) related practices across the mining industry in the next ten years will increase, not just for the big players but for juniors as well. Companies, investors, governments and insurers who fail to act on ESG matters are to likely face greater risks. Demonstrating leadership in ESG will ultimately become a differentiating factor and market participants have much to gain from embracing ESG stewardship as part of their competitive advantage. Stock Exchanges have an important role to play in advancing sustainability in the capital markets. It is for this reason that the Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative was founded to serve as a global platform for exploring how exchanges can enhance performance on ESG issues and encourage sustainable investment. The SSE initiative provides an effective platform for dialogue between the United Nations, stock exchanges, investors, companies and regulators in the mining industry. The paper will explain why ESG reporting is crucial for the survival of a mining company and how the lack of transparency could be detrimental to its public image and shareholder relations. The paper will also identify bodies that regulate ESG reporting, as well as the available tools that provide guidelines on reporting ESG matters. Key ESG reporting parameters (at a global scale) will also be highlighted.

A residue storage facility (RSF) was designed to cater for Davidson Creek Area and Robertson Range Area operations under the FerrAus Pilbara iron ore development project in the Pilbara Region, Western Australia. Annual ore production was about 15 million tonnes over a period of up to 15 years. The RSF was designed to handle a tailings production rate of 2.2 Mt/a over the project life with ability to be expanded at a later date. The composition of tailings was predominantly -45 ¦ material with some spiral reject material. The fraction of solids was expected to be between 40 per cent and 50 per cent solids by weight.The RSF was designed as an above ground storage facility, integrating with a mine waste dump planned close to the selected RSF site. This integration helped to increase the stability of the RSF embankment and to reduce the construction cost. The main source of construction material for the remaining part of the RSF embankment was selected to be mine waste. The RSF was designed to be constructed in stages by considering the availability of mine waste according to the mining schedule. The use of mine waste for construction of RSF embankments has several benefits over use of borrowed material. The primary objective of mining companies is to function as a profitable business by delivering products that fit customer requirements in a safe and sustainable manner. Optimum resource utilisation is a critical focus area to achieve this objective, and the long-term sustainable business performance of a mining company is determined by the extent to which this is achieved. Technology improvements and/or new technology development could improve resource utilisation. However, adding new projects to a Brownfield operation carries risk. Overall project schedules, tie-in schedules and safety risks normally receive adequate attention, but the introduction and integration of new technology to a Brownfield site also carries the significant risk of failure to achieve design performance (quality or throughput). This risk must be addressed via rigorous design phase risk assessments and piloting. Post commissioning, the effective metallurgical integration of any new technology/circuit/process plant into an existing process plant calls for critical assessment, through circuit performance testing, and optimisation to ensure alignment with design criteria. In addition, this approach provides clear focus areas for further optimisation of the new plant and additional opportunity for overall plant optimisation. Roy Hill recently navigated this process successfully, and this paper provides feedback on the journey that led to improved resource utilisation.

The South American mining community leads the world in recognition and adoption of the latest grinding mill relining technologies. Clearly this region has recognised the benefits of improved relining performance as a defence against the Global Economic Crisis. Five of the six RUSSELL TWIN 8 Mill Relining Systems, ordered to date, are either operating or being manufactured for South American mine sites. The sixth is for Sino IronÆs Cape Preston Project in Western Australia. This paradigm shift, towards very short relining times, aims at displacing mill relining activities from the critical path of concentrator maintenance shutdown schedules. The first uses of the RUSSELL TWIN 8 Mill Relining System have seen some of the highest semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill new liner placement rates ever observed by Russell Mineral Equipment (RME), as would be expected with two, independent Machines working simultaneously in the one mill. The liner replacement rate, averaged over the whole reline is good (27 per cent improvement over single Machine System in the same mill) but short of full potential. This modest result can be attributed to reline crews unfamiliarity with RUSSELL TWIN 8 System operation. This paper compares a sample of conventional (single machine) RME Mill Relining System performance data with one ædouble headÆ mill liner handler by others. Early performance of EscondidaÆs new RUSSELL TWIN 8 System performance is then compared with recent single machine data from Escondida, immediately prior to RUSSELL TWIN 8 commissioning. RME and Escondida look to constantly improving RUSSELL TWIN 8 System performance as full operational familiarity is achieved. The preparation of this paper revealed a need to develop a global industry standard for mill relining data collection. A web based platform to develop data collection templates is also discussed in Appendix 1.

The Earth Moving Equipment Safety Round Table (EMESRT) was established by mining companies in 2006 to influence manufacturer's equipment design through a process of engagement. 2010 EMESRT member companies include Anglo American, Barrick, BHP Billiton, Centennial Coal, Collahausi, Newcrest, Newmont, Rio Tinto, Vale and Xstrata.Driven by a persistent need for retrofits to new equipment, such as haul trucks, EMESRT initially engaged with Surface Equipment Manufacturers including Caterpillar, Komatsu, Leibherr, Hitachi, Le Tourneau and Terex. These OEMs responded positively to the EMESRT initiative, welcoming the opportunity for dialogue with an aligned industry regarding human factors issues related to equipment design, rather than needing to respond to the disparate range of demands for design modifications previously received from individual customers. This engagement process is about making global sustained changes within the OEM organisations and within the mining companies. It is a very international exercise. For example, over two weeks in September 2010, a total of 21 different miners from ten different companies travelled from Australia, South Africa, Canada, Brazil, Singapore and the United States to engage with OEM counterparts who assembled from the United States, Japan, France, Sweden, Finland and Germany. EMESRT Surface Group representatives completed a whirlwind tour of the major North American manufacturers of mining equipment. Starting in Dallas (Atlas Copco, LeTourneau), this tour passed through Gainesville (Sandvik), Newport News (Liebherr), Guelph - Ontario (Hitachi) and Milwaukee (P&H Mining/Joy Global; Bucyrus), before winding up in Peoria, Illinois (Komatsu, Caterpillar). Over nine meetings, this group engaged with 129 individuals from nine OEMs. The EMESRT group welcomed miners from four non-member companies to come along for the meetings. These companies are Syncrude Canada Ltd, the Kearl Oil Sands Project - Imperial Oil (ESSO), Suncor Energy Ltd and Teck Resources Ltd.Other mining industry sectors have now expanded the EMESRT scope from surface mining to include exploration and underground mining equipment. In 2009, EMESRT was organised into four Technical Groups, consisting of EMESRT member company representatives, to focus on engagement with OEMs of surface, underground coal and soft rock, underground hard rock, and exploration drilling equipment. An advisory group has been formed to coordinate activities between all workgroups and provide strategic direction and cohesion between all activities. The Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (UQ-SMI) facilitates and coordinates all EMESRT activities on behalf of member companies. Building on successes with individual Surface Mining OEMs, EMESRT now aims to help OEMs in their transition to a sustainable design process that will incorporate and address specific design philosophies at the concept phase of design, so that significant improvements can be made up front for little cost within the overall budget. EMESRT members plan to educate all stakeholders, internally, within their own companies, and externally, by addressing industry associations, regulators and other end users about new ways of evaluating equipment design based on EMESRT purchasing specifications. This presentation will outline the EMESRT approach and report on progress in 2010.

One of the most significant technical and practical challenges facing the tunnel construction team on the Legacy Way road tunnel project in Brisbane, Australia was how to erect the prestressed precast concrete slabs to form the smoke duct in the tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnels.An essential part of the tunnel ventilation system, the smoke duct extends the full length of the 4.6 km-long twin two-lane tunnels. The vast majority of the tunnels (approximately 4.3 km) were constructed using two 12.4 m diameter double-shield TBMs. The refurbished Herrenknecht machines broke several world records on the way to completing the tunnel excavation works in just over nine months. With the excavation complete the focus turned to solving the complex civil tunnel fit-out challenges. A key component of the civil fit-out of the tunnels was constructing the smoke duct in the TBM tunnels, which was designed as a precast solution.The slabs, which each measure 8.62 m long × 2.0 m wide × 200 mm thick and weigh close to 9?t, need to be erected above cast in situ corbels whilst other tunnel finishing works continue. The space-proofing clearance offered by the design to the support corbels below and the precast segmental lining above was in the order of only 100 mm.This paper tells the story of how the Transcity Joint Venture (JV) tunnel fit-out team comprising some of Europe and Australia’s leading tunnel construction specialists drew upon the global strengths of the existing JV member companies and the global reach of leading TBM manufacturer Herrenknecht to develop an innovative system in solving this challenging problem. There are many sources of gas in underground mines including development and production blasting, strata gases, spontaneous combustion, diesel equipment, chemicals used for a wide range of functions, welding activities and fires.It is only in relatively recent times that electronic gas monitors (or detectors) have become both safe and affordable for routine use.In modern mines, gas monitors should be in daily use by the ventilation department as well as blasting re-entry (or clearance) crews, and are often used by drilling crews, shift supervisors, hygienists and mine rescue or fire fighting crews.When first released, electronic gas monitors needed to be sent off-site periodically for calibration at a suitable accredited laboratory. Between calibrations, their accuracy was unknown. More recently, ‘bump testing’ and field calibration has become possible on the mine site, improving both reliability and safety as well as reducing the total number of gas monitors that need to be in use.There has been almost an overwhelming increase in the number and sophistication of gas monitor features in recent years. This paper reports on a case study into the key criteria that ventilation practitioners should be aware of with respect to the specification and selection of the most recent gas monitoring systems, and recommends good practice for site-based operation and calibration.CITATION:Brake, D J, 2015. The growing popularity of platinum and platinum group metals (or PGMs, including palladium, rhodium and others) for a wide range of applications leads to some interesting issues for mining and sustainability. The uses for PGMs includes catalytic converters for air pollution control in vehicles, growing jewellery use, catalysts for various purposes (especially petroleum and chemicals processing), hydrogen fuel cells and many others. Given the growing importance of most of these PGM uses in more sustainable technologies or in making industrial processes more efficient, it is critical to understand the complex sustainability issues which surround platinum and PGMs. At present, South Africa is the dominant PGMs producer and holds about 88 per cent of estimated global resources, with important but relatively minor production and resources in Zimbabwe, Russia, Canada and the United States. Given the concentrated location of PGM resources, what are the likely trends in PGM mining with respect to environmental sustainability? That is, what are the costs in terms of energy, pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, water, land use impacts, social impacts, economic aspects associated with this globally important industry? This paper compiles and analyses a range of data on platinum-PGM mining, focusing primarily on South Africa. It synthesises a unique combination of data which relates typical production aspects such as ore grade and scale with sustainability aspects such as greenhouse, energy and water costs. The findings are critical in understanding the debate about the increasing environmental and social costs of some materials and technologies which are considered crucial for sustainable industries based on PGMs. Overall, the paper represents a valuable insight into the platinum-PGM sector, providing a range of useful data for understanding the environmental sustainability of this particular group of precious metals.

Through an ambitious but relatively low-cost program of marine fieldwork, laboratory investigations and technology-transfer and training activities, three Indonesia-Australia-led marine expeditions were undertaken aboard KR Baruna Jaya VIII between 2001 and 2003. These IASSHA (Indonesia-Australia Survey for Submarine Hydrothermal Activity) cruises have sought to discover and investigate a variety of potential ore forming hydrothermal systems in a range of tectonic settings. All cruises have been successful, both scientifically and from the point of view of training, creation of capabilities and capacity building for such research in Indonesia. Over 60 scientists and technicians from Indonesian and Australian institutions and agencies have been involved. Three new sites and a possible fourth site of hydrothermal activity were discovered in the Sangihe arc in northern Sulawesi. Surveys in the Tomini basin tested a hypothesis based on previous data which suggested this might be an isolated anoxic, brine-filled basin over 2000 m deep where igneous heat sources existed to generate hydrothermal mineralisation. The bay, however, was found to be open to adjacent deep ocean circulation, and there was no evidence of massive base metal sulfides. Subdued evidence of hydrothermal activity was found in the Sunda Strait associated with the famous Krakatau volcano and the extension of the seismically active Semangko Fault. The BANDAMIN program (Indonesia-Germany) covered a portion of the Banda arc in eastern Indonesia, and also found evidence of recent hydrothermal activity and epithermal sulfide mineralisation.

The words ""Uncertainty"" and ""Risk"" pervade every discussion about mining exploration and investment. Perhaps these terms are subjectively understood by industry professionals, but objective portrayal of these concepts outside the industry is a woefully undeveloped science. This paper addresses current industry understanding and practice regarding quantitative risk assessment techniques, and provides examples of the application of three of these techniques. Probabilistic techniques for financial risk assessment are valuable adjuncts to conventional financial analysis, and address a range of issues not assessable by any other means. The value of whole-of-project probabilistic risk assessment is currently debatable for decision-making purposes, but is seen as important as a mechanism to focus attention to the critical issues that ultimately impact on project success. The dissection of project capital into risk and non-risk components provides valuable insights into risk characteristics not readily quantifiable in any other way. This technique also provides a framework for more objective ""what if?"" scenario evaluation and for the capital structure of resource projects. Finally, mechanisms for the valuation of undeveloped reserves are examined, and guidelines suggested. The importance of reliability in production cost estimates is highlighted and the impact of early development on reserve valuations is discussed. The importance of economics throughout all stages of the evaluation process is fundamental.

A numerical model has been developed to simulate the effectiveness and costs of a number of conceptual remedial measures aimed at reducing acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and its tributaries near the Stockton Coal Mine, situated on the West Coast of New Zealand. The Stockton Coal Mine has been in operation over the past 100 years. During that time, seepage from waste rock dumps has contributed to elevated acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. The yearly mean rainfall at the mine site is 6000 mm. The model, developed using GoldSim software, simulates rainfall, run-off and stream discharge for 26 tributaries. It then calculates acidity and metal concentrations in the mine impacted tributaries and the dilution downstream from the mine. The model has been calibrated to measured flow and acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. Acidity and metal loads are removed from the system in accordance with specified efficiencies and capacities of the respective conceptual remedial measures. The user can compare specific remedial measures, or a combination of conceptual remedial measures. The model predicts the acidity and metal concentrations at a number of monitoring stations for any remedial strategy selected by the user. It also calculates the capital and operational costs for that particular remedial strategy. This paper presents the development of the numerical model and describes how the end-user can use it to compare the efficiency and costs of various remedial strategies by running different æwhat ifÆ scenarios.

Consolidated Rutile Limited (CRL) was one of the best performing mining stocks of the turbulent 1980s, having a very high payout of franked dividends. In contrast to some other mining groups, it was not highly involved in the speculative lead-up to the 1987 sharemarket crash. Its base was firmly laid through a succession of decisions that were taken in the period 1982-1985. These decisions and the rationale behind them are outlined in this paper. CRL began the 1980s in a highly favourable position. It had successfully pioneered the transition to high-throughput mining of the high dunes on North Stradbroke Island (NSI), commissioning its 2100 tph cutter suction dredge at the Bayside reserves in 1978 at the time of rising prices, such that it was able to pay off its modest bank loan within 18 months. The June 1980 results showed a record after-tax profit of $5.6M, from total assets fo $26.5M and sales tonnages of rutile and zircon of around 50,000 tonnes each.

In order to develop downstream processing routines for iron ore and to understand the behaviour of the ore during such processing, extensive mineralogical characterisation is required. To determine mineral associations, mineral liberation and grain size distribution, imaging techniques have to be used. There are two main imaging techniques used for the characterisation of iron ore, ie, Optical Image Analysis (OIA) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). In this article a QEMSCANTM system is used as an example of SEM methodology and results obtained from it are compared against results obtained by the CSIRO ‘Recognition3/Mineral3’ OIA system.Both OIA and QEMSCANTM systems have advantages and drawbacks. Even though the latest QEMSCANTM systems can distinguish between major iron oxides and oxyhydroxides, it is still problematic for QEMSCANTM to distinguish between iron ore minerals very close in oxygen content, eg haematite and hydroheamatite, or between different types of vitreous goethite.QEMSCANTM also can misidentify minerals with close chemical composition, ie haematite as magnetite and vitreous goethite as haematite. In OIA, iron minerals with slight differences in their oxidation or hydration state are more easily and directly recognisable by correlation with their reflectivity. In both methods, the presence of microporosity can result in some misidentification, but in SEM methods misidentifi cations due to microporosity can be critical. Low resolution during QEMSCANTM analysis can significantly affect the textural classifi cation of particle sections.The main conclusion of this study is that, for low iron content ores or tailings, QEMSCANTM can provide much more detailed information on the gangue minerals than OIA. However, for routine characterisation of iron ores with high iron content and containing a variety of iron oxides and oxyhydroxides, OIA is a faster, more cost-effective and more reliable method of iron ore characterisation. A combined approach using both techniques will provide the most detailed understanding of iron ore samples being characterised.

The first record of coal discovery in Australia dates back to 1791 when escaping convicts found coal in the banks of a creek just south of Newcastle. Development in the Newcastle Coalfield was the sole source of supply for the colony and for export until the 1850s when mines were established in the Southern & Western Coalfields. The important Hunter Coalfield was not discovered until 1873 when coal was found at Rixs Creek near Singleton: The first exploration drillholes were commenced in 1799 using drilling equipment obtained by Sir Joseph Banks. From 1820 to 1850 several famous geologists (naturalists), including the Rev W. B. Clarke, J. D. Dana and Strzelecki, wrote reports on the coal measures in New South Wales. The first Government Geo- logist, Samuel Stutchbury, was appointed in 1850. The major coal deposits of the State are contained in Permian Coal Measures in the Sydney-Gunnedah and Oaklands Basins. Coal quality ranges from high volatile, high moisture thermal coal at Oaklands to low volatile hard coking coal in the Southern Coalfield. Most coalfields can provide a range of steaming and coking coals.
