Conceptual studies of the run of mine stockpiling and reclaiming requirements com- menced in 1975. Final selection of equipment was made in 1978 and the equipment was commissioned in June, 1979. Equipment selection was made after extensive investigation and visits to existing facilities throughout the world. The equipment selected is described and com- pared with the alternatives. Foundations were designed to minimise clean up effort and to ensure stability of equipment under design wind loading without storm bays. Program- mable logic control enables the stacking and reclaiming facility to provide a blended feed to the coal preparation plant.

Canada’s Quebec province operates 26 metal mines, 19 of which are producing gold and generating over C$1.8 billion (US$1.3 billion) annually. In all those mines, numerous samples of rock are collected and analysed daily in laboratories in order to determine their gold content. However, laboratory results are generally available within 48 hours of sampling (depending on the number of samples received by the laboratory and the priority of the results), thus potentially slowing down mining activities. In an attempt to find a solution for delayed laboratory results, Laval University, in partnership with the National Research Council Canada (NRC), the National Institute for Scientific Research (INRS) and four mining companies (Agnico Eagle, Canadian Malartic, Hecla Québec and Iamgold) have launched the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) project for in situ real-time mining sample analysis. This work aims to minimise the amount of LIBS point sampling necessary to be representative of a full scan of the analysed area. Eight sampling patterns are investigated. A statistical analysis of the data was performed by varying the pattern steps. Results show that two of the patterns, 1 and 5 (single diagonal crossing the stratification of the samples with opposite slopes) minimise the amount of point sampling while remaining representative. The most successful results are obtained from steps which are greater than 6. In terms of the type of material, pattern 5 and steps 9 are better for core sampling, while pattern 1 and steps 8 are better for rock sampling. The geological explanation for these results is the heterogeneous distribution of gold in the sample which seems to be more homogeneous in the rocks than in the core sample due to the small rock size. A major aspect in competitive ironmaking is to replace metallurgical coke by injecting alternative cheap fuels. Whereas in the past, heavy oil injection as well as on a lower scale natural gas injection have proved to be reliable, the progressing high price level of these fuels has prompted international interest in looking for alternative cheaper fuels, especially pulverized coal. Theoretical analysis and practical operations showed that for constant adiabatic flame temperature, potentially more coke may be replaced by injected coal than by heavy oil, because of less endothermic cracking of hydrogen components. Since about 1974, the ARBED-Group has been looking for alternative fuels and in 1976 came to conclusion to select for first trials pulverized lignite for the following reasons:

Two key elements in the design of a pastefill or high density hackfill system are the preparation of the backfill material and its distribution underground. This paper examines these two areas. Owing to the essentially impervious nature of total mill tailings, preparation of pastefill and high density fill from current tailings involves a physical dewatering process. There are currently three methods available for this process: I. Vacuum or pressure filters. These represent the 'traditional' approach to the preparation of pastefill. 2. Paste production storage mechanism. This is a thickening/storage mechanism developed with the specific objective of producing paste/high density backfills. 3. Fluidization. This system utilises silos fitted with simple dewatering devices and nozzles. Recently developed by CANMET, it provides the simplest and most economical approach. This paper describes and compares the three preparation methods, from a practical and an economic point of view. Once the pastefill/high density fill has been prepared and binder added, the backfill must be distributed underground into the stopes. A fundamental factor in the design of a distribution system is the rheology of the material- No two materials will exhibit the same properties, and a sequence of rheological and related testing is required prior to the completion of the design of the underground distribution system. This paper covers the testwork normally required and discusses the fundamental design parameters of pastefill distribution systems. Many mine accidents will affect the mine ventilation system when they occur. At present, there is a lack of monitoring means to capture the occurrence of accidents in time by monitoring the ventilation system, so as to take emergency measures to reduce the loss of personnel and property. Pressure wave is an elastic wave existing in air. Most accidents in mine will cause obvious changes of pressure wave. It is an innovative idea to monitor the occurrence of accidents in mine by measuring pressure wave. The development and functions of the pressure monitoring device and related software are introduced in detail. The pressure wave monitoring test is carried out in San Xavier underground mining laboratory, and the D-wave and S-wave waveform data are collected. The waveform characteristics are analysed, and the main frequency distribution of the pressure wave is found to be within 1 Hz by using FFT. At the same time, the influence of the propagation distance of the pressure wave on the waveform is analysed. The propagation velocity of D-wave and S-wave are roughly calculated, and they are 279.6 m/s and 397.3 m/s respectively. S-wave is slightly faster than D-wave. Although there are errors and uncertainties in the test, the test verified the feasibility of the existence and collection of pressure waves in the ventilation roadway, and provides a method for the future study of the propagation of pressure waves in the mine ventilation system.

Bendigo Mining Limited has established a modern underground gold mine and processing plant at Bendigo in central Victoria. The Bendigo goldfield produced around 22 000 000 oz of gold between 1851 and 1954. Approximately 4 000 000 oz were sourced from surface alluvial workings with the remaining 18 000 000 oz won from underground quartz reefs. The modern mine is accessed via the Swan Decline, which commences at the Kangaroo Flat site on the southern outskirts of Bendigo and progresses in a north easterly direction between the Deborah and Sheepshead anticlines, reaching a depth of almost 1000 m below the City of Bendigo. Development of this decline commenced in 1998. Since that time 20 km of underground development has been completed. Exploration drilling, on-reef development and bulk sampling carried out between 1999 and 2005 resulted in the estimation of a Probable Ore Reserve of 700 000 tonnes at 9.0 g/t gold for 207 000 oz of gold. These Ore Reserves were contained within four reefs located on the Deborah and Sheepshead anticlines. Reef mining commenced in late 2005 from the Shywolup and Greater Garrard reefs. Material mined was stockpiled on the surface in preparation for commissioning of the process plant which commenced in mid 2006. Mining and processing were carried out between August 2006 and May 2007 during which time 176 000 tonnes were processed at an average grade of 5.4 g/t gold to produce 26 735 oz of gold. Plant feed was sourced from four reefs. This paper discusses some of the issues which were encountered with the definition and mining of these geologically variable and nuggetty reefs. This paper covers exploration techniques, grade estimation, mine geological control, mining methods, geotechnical issues and reconciliations. It will also discuss some of the lessons learnt and how these will be applied to future Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimation, as well as underground operations.

The D47 and D39 Mechanical Dynamic Extra bolts (D47 MDX and D39 MDX) have been developed in response to the ever-increasing demand from the mining industry for rock bolts with high dynamic capacity. To prove such capacity, Sandvik has performed numerous in situ dynamic testing with the unique Dynamic Test Rig (DTR) (Darlington, Rataj and Roach, 2019; Roach, Rataj and Darlington, 2019). To complement the collection of testing data, Sandvik, in collaboration with the Swedish Research Institute for Mining, Metallurgy and Materials (Swerim) have performed additional experiments in laboratory condition using Swerim’s new drop test rig. This rig utilises a momentum transfer method to apply a dynamic load to the bolt. The sample falls together with the mass until the support beam impacts stationary dampers and the momentum energy is transferred to the bolt. Part of the charged energy is released by the dumpers while the remaining portion is absorbed by plastic deformation and/or displacement of the ground support element. The D47 and D39 MDX bolts have been tested at Swerim’s test facility with different levels of input energy. Six tests were performed at the specification energy of 36 kJ and six tests were carried out with the maximum allowable energy from the facility, ie 44 kJ. The bolts confirmed their dynamic performance absorbing the input energy without failure. The D47 MDX bolt absorbed up to 33 kJ with 150 mm displacement while the D39 MDX bolt absorbed up to 35 kJ with 162 mm displacement. This work will present an overview of the drop test rig at Swerim’s facility and a collection of results of the test performed on the D47 and D39 MDX bolts. The test method and results will be analysed and compared to the tests carried out with the in situ DTR.

Froth flotation process requires the use of frothers. These important flotation agents are commonly characterised as either æselectiveÆ or æpowerfulÆ and are chosen following general guidelines and verification by laboratory and/or pilot plant tests. Fundamental properties of the flotation frothers have been extensively studied over the last few years. These studies have led to the development of standardised procedures to characterise frothers in terms of their ability to reduce bubble size and to increase foam stability. In this research project, the performance of five frothers in flotation of coal is evaluated and related to the fundamental properties of these agents. Since the recovery of water in the concentrate is closely related to the non-selective transport of solid particles by entrainment, the tested frothers are also assessed in terms of their ability to promote the transport of water towards the froth collection zone, both in absence and in presence of solids.

This paper addresses critical environmental, health, regulatory and scientific concerns related to gold mining activities in the specific area of Barberton, Mpumalanga, South Africa. The paper thus calls for informed decisions to be made by the authorities to safeguard both the environment and people’s health. The novelty of this study is based on its comprehensive nature of the simultaneous assessment of both cyanide and potential toxic elements (PTEs) in tailings, while taking into account their composition variability over time. By combining these aspects, it is then possible to provide a holistic understanding of the contamination risks associated with mining tailings and thus justify the need for regular monitoring and supervision to ensure compliance against regulatory limits. Additionally, this paper considered investigating the dynamic nature of tailings, which are subject to changes in their chemical composition due to exposure to weathering by various agents. In this study, the determination of weak acid dissociable (WAD) and free cyanide in tailings was performed using a validated method employing the South African Council for Mineral Technology (MINTEK) Laboratory Cynoprobe. The PTEs in tailings were determined by an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). The results revealed that the tailings contained primarily substantial amounts of PTEs, including Fe (87 566 to 37 800 mg/L), Cu (271 to 110 mg/L), Mn (2100 to 680 mg/L), Ni (400 to 390 mg/L), Zn (180 to 68 mg/L), Cr (645 to 510 mg/L), As (450 to 128 mg/L), and Pb (up to 35 mg/L). The cyanide concentrations in tailings varied between 0.20 mg/L and 0.26 mg/L for free CN (with a mean of 0.23 mg/L in water leaching), 0.23 mg/L to 0.28 mg/L for free CN (with a mean of 0.25 mg/L in alkali leaching), 0.24 mg/L to 0.35 mg/L for WAD CN (with a mean of 0.28 mg/L in water leaching), and 0.31 mg/L to 0.39 mg/L for WAD CN (with a mean of 0.35 mg/L in alkali leaching). The measured concentration of cyanide and the PTEs was compared to the minimum permissible levels enforced by the South African Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) and the Water Research Commission (WRC) regulations that govern the disposal of hazardous constituents into the environment. Additionally, it was observed that the concentrations of contaminants in the tailings exceeded the acceptable minimum limits for hazardous waste exposure, posing risks to the environment and human health.

Ballarat Goldfields Limited is currently re-opening the old workings of the East Ballarat Goldfield which contain an estimated 1800 ML of groundwater. The disposal of this 'minewater' was of concern: the minewater is of moderate salinity; increased salinity levels have interfered with agriculture and water use at a number of locations downstream from Ballarat. Extensive numerical studies indicated that treated minewater could be discharged into the Ballarat Creek system for dilution by sewage effluent and by surface runoff after rainfall events. An automatic real-time salinity management system has been developed to enable the disposal of saline minewater in this fashion. A desk top computer operates the system: discharge and salinity readings are taken automatically each hour and filed away; the maximum allowable rate of discharge of treated minewater is calculated; pumps are switched on and off. The system readily enables daily, weekly and monthly data reports together with floppy disks of 'raw' data to be prepared in formats suitable for direct submission to the Victorian Environmental Protection Authority.

Since early-2001, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) has successfully operated an ultra fine grinding (UFG) circuit to supplement its roaster capacity for the treatment of the refractory gold flotation concentrate. A second UFG mill was installed in 2002 taking the total UFG capacity to over 20 tph while grinding to 11 to 12 microns and achieving over 90 per cent gold recovery. A development program in 2002/3 involving plant trials, pilot plants and laboratory testwork resulted in process improvements and a better understanding of the milling and gold leach processes that assisted in narrowing the gap between UFG and roasting. This paper details the operation of the ultra fine grinding process at KCGM as a non oxidative treatment for the extraction of gold from a refractory ores.

The importance of mine ventilation to health and safety in both coal and metalliferous mines has been long recognised. The primary and secondary ventilation systems in most metalliferous mines incur 50 per cent or more of the total mine electrical power consumption and frequently about 10 per cent of total underground mine operating costs. The requirements for ventilation-related horizontal and vertical development, fans and cooling have a significant impact on mine capital costs and also on mine schedules and start-up times and hence cash flows. There are increasing pressures on regulators and miners to reduce airborne contaminants such as diesel particulatematter, nitrogen dioxide and heat (wet bulb temperatures), and significant pressures to reducegreenhouse gases such as fugitive methane emissions from coalmines and the carbon dioxide footprint of both coal and metalliferous mines. Many previously Australian miners are now globaloperators and have extensive overseas mining operations where local ventilation standards and expertise may not be consistent with Australian practices. The role of the site ventilation officer is also changing with strict new requirements for the statutory position being introduced into Queensland metalliferous mines and the potential for this to become more widespread. Recent regulator and parliamentary review committees have identified systematic shortcomings in mine ventilation compliance, and statutory certificates in both Queensland and NSW now require continuing professional development to maintain currency. Public and investor support for mining are also increasingly contingent on safe, healthy and environmentally responsible practices and the standards for these are frequently tightening. Good ventilation design and operating practices that are consistently well executed therefore contribute significantly not only to a safe and healthy mine but also to a productive and cost-effective operation and the ongoing social licence to operate. There are a variety of ways of providing technical design and oversight into a mine’s ventilation systems; this paper explores some current trends in ventilation standards and statutory requirements, as well as ways to support and develop mine ventilation staff for both domestic and international operations and also the emerging senior technical roles of Group/Principal/Corporate mine ventilation engineer.

Many flotation plants use pH to adjust the pulp chemistry of their system to achieve optimum separation. For example, in a sequential lead/zinc circuit the pH during sphalerite flotation is increased to 10.5 or greater to depress galena and pyrite, thereby improving selectivity for sphalerite. However, maintaining a pulp at a particular pH value does not necessarily provide the operator with an abundance of information regarding the chemistry changes occurring within a plant. This paper provides the reader with a number of pulp chemical observations in several plants, showing that the same trends are noted over time; however, the magnitude of the measured values do change. Further, the changes in magnitude are invariably associated with a change in mineralogy. Thus, is measuring pH enough? Can the Eh, dissolved oxygen and temperature be measured at the industrial scale reliably? And, are these measurements useful?

The mining district of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero (QF) in southeastern Brazil contributes to 70 per cent of the Brazilian iron ore production, which reached 370 Mt in 2010. Traditionally, four iron ore types were mined in the QF region:1. soft haematite,2. hard haematite,3. friable ‘itabirite’ (the Brazilian name for metamorphosed banded iron formation), and4. canga (an indurated iron-rich crust).With the exception of the hard haematite, these categories derive from supergene enrichment of the Paleoproterozoic Cauê Itabirite. High current iron ore demand means that the QF high grade supergene ores will be depleted in a few decades. Consequently, several mining projects are being developed to exploit unenriched, fresh itabirite. Among them, the Mineração Usiminas Serra Azul project in northwestern QF is one of the most advanced. Four major itabirite types occur in the QF region:1. siliceous (or standard),2. dolomitic,3. amphibolitic, and4. magnetitic.The dominant type in Serra Azul region is a fresh siliceous itabirite, composed essentially of haematite, martite and quartz that averages 36 per cent Fe (51.5 per cent Fe2O3) and 47 per cent SiO2. The second type, the magnetitic itabirite, consisting of magnetite, martite, gruneritecummingtonite, quartz, dolomite, stilpnomelane, and subordinate haematite, is typically a strongly magnetic greenish banded iron formation with the iron grade varying between 25 and 35 per cent. Chemically, it differs from the siliceous itabirite due to the relatively high CaO, MgO and, consequently, high LOI contents. Together with supergene ores, fresh itabirites have been included in the ore reserves of the Serra Azul project. We anticipate that all the four types of fresh itabirite will be incorporated as ore in the QF region, causing a huge increase on the iron ore resources of the district, and representing enormous environmental and technological challenges for the local iron ore industry.

The minerals industry, as many other industries, has a wealth of indicators and a thriving æindustryÆ in their development, measurement and reporting. It is natural for this to occur for a new endeavour. However, perhaps it is time for the community concerned with minerals industry indicators to ask whether we have achieved a certain maturation whereby proliferation of indicators may be replaced by a more disciplined and constrained approach. In many natural and engineered systems, thermodynamics provides well-understood and tested constraints. Indicators that are uninterpretable in this framework are not considered acceptable. This paper provides initial evidence that such a formalism may be possible for mine sustainability. The formalism developed does not claim to have the rigour of thermodynamics. However, it does provide a first step towards formalising selection of indicators on the basis of their true comprehensibility. A set of simple equations is developed that represent the conventional five capitals (actually we use six because we separate renewable and non-renewable natural capital) and how they are linked. This is coded into a simulation model. The base equations are then used to develop a system level indicator of sustainability performance, which is asserted to be a reflection of the mineÆs reputation. We define a least sustainable state, termed æmaximum revenue mining (MRM)Æ in the system and define the degree of system sustainability as how far the system is from the MRM. We then introduce a simple mechanism whereby different actors can express differing views on the emphasis for the distance from MRM. Sustainability thereby becomes a non-unique thing that is defined by a distance from MRM and a set of preferences across the capitals.

Application of ore pre-treatment technologies such as Grade Engineering and in-pit ore treatment require comprehensive analysis to show proven value is being generated by switching away from the current practices. Considering most mining operations last several decades; the pre-treatment technologies must be investigated over life of mine (LOM) to truly show value was generated or lost. Therefore, a value chain flowsheet model has been usually developed to run those analysis/simulations over LOM using a set of defined ore characteristics and the operating equipment capacities. The Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES) has been used for this type of LOM simulations as it has the necessary flexibility to accommodate the whole mining value chain flowsheet in one platform and provide essential computation power to run mass simulations for the given scenarios using the resource block model. This allows to forecast the value chain response over the LOM for all given scenarios in a feasible amount of time. The traditionally developed flowsheets for the analysis/simulations are usually limited to the mineral processing plant and were developed based on a single audit conducted on the plant in a very short time, e.g. several hours. The process plant is being operated with a certain ore at a certain condition during the short audits which would not reveal the true capacity of the operation equipment when ore characteristics changes. Therefore, it would be impossible to define the true capacity of the equipment and identify the constraints along the value chain. In this study, a methodology was developed to identify the constraints along the value chain and implement those in the IES flowsheet using process information. Also, the equipment models were fine-tuned to represent the true capacity of the equipment in the flowsheet using the same data set. The methodology was tested over five process plant in two operations and showed the performance forecast was significantly improved over the traditional methods being used so far. Then those high-fidelity flowsheets were used to evaluate the ore pre-treatment technologies proposed by the relevant resource company experts.

I The South Platform of the Gippsland Basin is an extensive area of shallow basement covered by a relatively-thin Late Mesozoic-Cainozoic section. Although the sporadic exploration to-date has not resulted in any hydrocarbon discoveries, the area is under-explored and its taste potential has not yet been fully evaluated. The best potential appears to be in areas underlain by the Golden Beach Megasequence where structures are mainly related to basement fault blocks.

The OK orebody comprises a steep dipping narrow quartz reef averaging 0.4 m in width hosted in basalt and gabbro with porphyry bars cross-cutting through it. The following paper tracks the mining of this orebody, challenges encountered, measures undertaken to address these challenges and changes in mining conditions and methods as the mine matured in both depth and age. The initial mining method was narrow vein hand held shrink stoping accessed by shaft, that over the period of the mines life was superseded by gallery stoping, shrink stoping and ultimately mechanised narrow vein long hole sublevel open stoping. The reasoning behind the change in mining methods is detailed, including safety and cost benefits. The transition presented many challenges that were overcome, resulting in the successful development of a narrow vein long hole stoping method. The lessons learnt during the transition period and the practices and principles developed for successful mining of narrow vein orebodies using long-hole open stoping methods are summarised in this paper. The final section of the paper takes a retrospective view of how the knowledge gained through the mining of the OK orebody would be applied to a new mine containing an orebody of this type, with consideration given to the initial excavation design, equipment selection, mining sequence, geotechnical investigations and mining method used.
