Too often in mine planning, maximising revenue-generating material takes precedence over minimising costs. The ability to target both revenue and cost optimisation enables mine plans to fulfil corporate objectives of targeting maximal project net present value (NPV). The state of current mining costs and increasing government regulations in Australia are forcing many mine planners to pay closer attention to cost minimisation. Dumping waste material, which ultimately forms waste landforms, represents a large cost to mining operations. A general mine, with a waste to ore strip ration of 6:1, allocates approximately 32 per cent of total mining costs to waste haulage alone (Gregory, 2003).Most scheduling packages do not dynamically build economic or minimal cost dumps as part of the scheduling process. In most cases, waste dumps are built after a mining schedule has been defined. Automated software is now available which dynamically schedules the pit and waste dumps together. The overall shape of the waste dump is therefore dictated by minimum cost or minimum haulage hours.The purpose of this paper is to compare dynamic pit and waste schedules to traditional methods which apply haulage estimations after defining the mining schedule. This paper includes a case study on the large open pit operation at Tropicana Gold Mine, a joint venture between AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd (70 per cent) and Independence Group NL (30 per cent). The operation will focus on mining three large open pits over a 13-year mining life. A total of 397 Mt of waste is mined and directed to multiple destinations including waste dumps, the run-of-mine (ROM) pad and tailings storage facility (TSF) perimeter.Due to these complexities, management of the haulage fleet, especially during the critical period of operation readiness and start-up, is essential. Critical infrastructure such as the TSF and ROM pad will need to be built early and these areas, as well as the sequential development of the waste dump, will need to be developed within the constraints of structured mining fleet build-up.This paper investigates the influences of haulage estimation accuracy and compares traditional approaches for waste planning to automated approaches using EVORELUTIONÖ.CITATION:Graskoski, S, Craig, S and Myburgh, C, 2013. There are two major aspects to wall control blasting – the potential for any blasthole to cause wall damage and the potential for a delayed sequence of blastholes to cause damage. The damage potential of individual blastholes is governed by standoff distance and charge weight. However, for locations sufficiently close to a highwall, dynamic finite element models and field measurements show that there is also a critical nature to those blastholes very close to the wall, over and above standoff distance. At many mine sites, the charge weight/standoff-distance is set by trial and error. Thus, a significant aspect of the present work is the determination of dynamic stress radiating from a blasthole. Unfortunately, the modelling and measurement of this dynamic stress is still faced with many difficulties. Typical models have questionable aspects, which casts serious doubt over their predictions, and it is shown that the Hustrulid Bar experimental technique does not correctly account for stress wave attenuation in extended media. In an attempt to solve the dynamic stress problem, the present work describes a model based on an exact solution under the assumption of viscoelastic material. The model takes full account of the rock mass elastic/viscoelastic properties, the explosive type, geometry and primer location and predicts a dynamic stress for direct comparison with the unconfined compressive strength of the local rock mass. This model predicts the standoff distance required to avoid damage due to a single blasthole. The behaviour of a delayed sequence of blastholes is analysed using an upgraded waveform superposition model, covering a range of initiation delay combinations, which predicts the peak particle motion (PPM) induced in the wall for each combination. This approach shows that there is no need to fire dedicated trim shots close to walls; all that is required is a carefully modified production shot. The mechanism of vibration screening is discussed, and its use in a superposition model highlights the potential of reverse firing (shield blasting) to reduce wall PPM. A conceptual model is also introduced to give a further insight to vibration screening and damage (via ground heave). This model predicts that a centre-lift blast will have a central heave profile and that a reverse-fired shot will produce a smaller power trough than that produced by a standard shot. It is demonstrated that the mechanism of presplit formation is not well understood; nevertheless, experimental evidence shows that presplits can be an effective method for reducing wall vibrations.CITATION:Blair, D P, 2015. This paper describes a collaborative project undertaken by Newcrest Mining Limited (Newcrest) and pitt&sherry to identify, develop and then implement global best practices to manage the exposure to inrush (dry and mud) hazards in underground mining operations. An extensive literature review was undertaken to identify past experience globally and the current state of knowledge and practice in managing inrush hazard. A key requirement of the literature review was the development of a list of guiding questions which would form a framework for approaching operators to discuss the topic, capture recent learnings and understand current operating practices to allow the development of a best practice solution. An initial cohort of 14 mines across four continents chose to contribute and detailed interviews were carried out by the project team. The outcome from the literature review, interviews with participating mines and various internal discussions was a comprehensive summary document detailing Basic versus Best Practice management of the inrush hazard. This document is being used as a gap analysis tool by Newcrest to assess and guide the management of inrush hazard at their existing and future operations. The summary document has also been provided to the participating mines for their consideration. The project is iterative and will continue to evolve as new experiences, knowledge and practices come to light.

The rationale for the design of the Emergency Egress (escape andentrapment) strategy for one underground metal mine has beenpreviously described (Brake, 1999). Two of the key conclusionsfor this mine, which is equipped with 30 minute oxygen-generating self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR), were the need to ensure no person is ever more than 750 m from an emergency refuge station (ERS) and that it could take up to eight hours to rescue workers from undergroundå. These conclusions were based on a number of considerations including the non-availability of a credible, æpersonalÆ entrapment procedure at the workplace, the duration of self-contained self-rescuers when used for travel, the need for rapid æclearingÆ of mine personnel to effectively and safely target mine search and rescue resources and the maximum time to either put a fire out, or to rescue affected personnel. As there is no Australian standard for refuge stationsç (or for self-rescuers), this paper follows with guidelines for the location and specification of both fixed (permanent) and relocatable Emergency Refuge Stations (ERSs) that may be applicable to other underground Australian metal mines.

SMC Resources Limited is implementing a selective mining approach at the Hadleigh Castle mine, formerly operated by Aurora Gold Limited. The main ore zone has a length of 250 metres and dips at 40 - 45¦ to the south. Gold mineralisation occurs in a variety of quartz-sulphide lodes in sericitised granodiorite. Shallow dips, alteration intensity and mineralisation style combine to make mining relatively difficult. Previously unworked, high-grade, shallow dipping (30 - 45¦), narrow quartz-sulphide lodes within the hanging-wall of the deposit are also being selectively exploited. Annual production of 35 000 oz Au is forecast from 185 000 tpa ore grading 6.5 g/t Au over a currently envisaged mine life of six years. Operations completed to-date include deepening the decline and access development of the first two levels beneath the previous workings. Longhole stoping operations have commenced in the main ore zone with air leg stoping also underway in the hanging wall lodes.

"The Syama Gold Mine, located in southern Mali, was established in 1990 by Broken Hill Propriety Limited (BHP). The operation began treating oxide, and in 1994 it transitioned to processing hard and refractory ore based on ‘whole-of-ore’ roasting. In 1996, BHP was succeeded by Randgold Resources and the operation ran until 2001, when it was placed into care and maintenance.The Syama ore is classified as a double refractory ore with pyrite occluding the fine grained gold present in the ore and high levels of organic carbon presenting a challenge in terms of preg-robbing behaviour. The ore is extremely competent and this combination of metallurgical features was the main source of metallurgical problems encountered by the previous owners.Resolute Mining Limited (RML) acquired the Syama project in 2004. Following a feasibility study and the development of a revised processing flow sheet the plant was recommissioned in 2008 using a combination of old and new equipment. The revised flow sheet enabled primary sulfide ore to be treated by flotation and roasting of the concentrate to produce a calcine suitable for conventional carbon-in-leach (CIL) processing.Commissioning and ramp up of the plant was a troubled process, with monthly gold production being as low as 3000 oz in 2010. Poor availability of equipment and lower-than-forecast recoveries were the primary contributors.During the last five years, RML has utilised a systematic approach to improve production, focusing on mechanical reliability, metallurgical recovery and process bottlenecks. Modifications to the circuit have been as a result of both innovation and the application of technological improvements. Improvements have been made to the flotation, roasting and CIL circuits and RML has introduced a deslime circuit to treat flotation concentrate, in addition to the very successful commissioning of a new 1 Mt/a oxide circuit in December 2014. These changes have resulted in gold production increasing to more than 20 000 oz per month in 2015.This paper presents the processes, change implementation and outcomes of the modifications made to the sulfide circuit to address the availability and recovery problems.Apart from the expansion of an existing, world-class deposit and discovery of new resources, future improvements on the path to a class-leading gold mine include the continued reduction of the unit cash cost, increase in overall sulfide circuit gold recovery, increased throughput through continued innovation and consistency in the plant’s operation.Citation:Sinclair, R, Hunter, I and Landwehr, D, 2016. Increasing orebody complexity, restrictions in ground access, and longer lead times for disturbance approvals, have generated the need for the Resource Development Team within Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO), to explore optimised drill design techniques that deliver resource conversion value while maximising program outcomes. In response to this challenge, the Team initiated a case study to produce an AI assisted/designed drill program using a non-machine learning AI. The case study involved the assessment and implementation of an AI generated drill program at one of RTIO’s Pilbara iron ore deposits, located in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia. The Mineral Resource is currently classified as 100 per cent Inferred. Access constraints inherent to topography, and the presence of exclusions zones have prevented adequate drilling coverage, resulting in lower resource confidence and a poor definition of the orebody extents and geometry. The drill campaign, planned in Q1 2023, needs to consider access constraints, complex topology and the limitations related to additional ground clearance, while addressing the requirement of improving orebody knowledge. The drill plan had to address two objectives. The first and main aim of drilling was to upgrade the Resource Classification to allow for possible conversion to Ore Reserve. The input for this objective was a volumetric representation of the areas currently not meeting pre-defined quantitative Resource Classification upgrade criteria. The second objective was to better define the orebody extents and geometry. For the second objective, the input to the drilling optimiser was a volumetric representation (blocks) of the areas of high uncertainty in the mineralisation/waste boundary, which were defined using an indicator conditional simulation technique. The drilling optimiser output was a range of compliant drill plans. A set of KPIs based on economic and orebody knowledge criteria were used to assess the plans and to select the most optimal drill design to be drilled in 2023. The geology and management teams were able to make better informed, objective decisions using the trade-off between cost and orebody knowledge gained. As part of the assessment, the AI generated plans were compared to our current planning practises. The AI assisted plans, when gauged against the project KPIs, showed clear and measurable improvements in both meeting project objectives and in managing operational risk.

The coal resources of the Singleton- Muswellbrook area of New South Wales are of major importance to Australia, and are likely to play a significant role in meeting the expanding demands for energy in many countries of the world. Coal resources of 45 thousand million tonnes of which 15 thousand million tonnes lie at a depth of less than 200m have been estimated. The history of coal mining in the area commenced in the mid 1800's and has been one of fluctuations in production but of rapid expansion in more recent years. It is destined to become the largest coal producing area in New South Wales. Coal is being won from the area by strip mining, open pit mining and by underground means. The techniques involved are described. The area is well endowed with infra- structure such as modern towns, railways, road- ways and access to port facilities. Production of both coking coal and steaming coal is expected to rise significantly within the next 25 years. A large proportion of the State's anticipated increased production to between 117 and 177 million tonnes by the year 2000 is likely to come from this area.

The new environmental legislation of 1986 was left incomplete and to date remains so. The 'missing' process by which environmental consideration should be applied was never embodied in law and has predisposition to a wide interpretation. The Resource Statutes which govern land use and development place demands on the environmental process without that definition. The Resource Statutes are themselves under review by Government. There is a new Government Department of Conservation. It is still in its early days and facing a challenge to compose its role as a steward over large tracts of land holding significant marketable resources, animal, vegetable, mineral, and abstract. It has also taken over numerous consent and advocacy roles in legislation beyond its own empowering Act. Enter the mining company, anxious if not able to get an easy passage for consents to prospect and mine, then at least to have a clear path to tread to get there, within a fixed time period. Whichever options appear available to process environmental approvals, public participation is that being favoured most by the regulatory bodies. Where a public notification of consent applications is mandatory, public participation should lead to the fastest track available.

Multielement reconnaissance geochemistry coupled with ground scintillation gamma ray measurements has been used to investigate the dispersion patterns of uranium and other major and trace elements in the arid Palmyrides region of central Syria. This region occupies an interplatform depression in the northern part of the Arabia Plate, upon which sediments up to 10 km thick have accumulated. Outcrops of strongly fractured Mesozoic and Cenozoic rocks form two major mountain belts, the northern and southern Palmyrides, between which is located the closed Ad-Daww basin, with a thick Neogene and Quaternary clastic cover. Among the various lithologies, phosphorites are well represented. Uranium and associated elements have been incorporated into the Upper Cretaceous and Lower Palaeogene sediments, especially the phosphorites, which are well represented in the region. These elements are derived from three possible sources, namely, sea water, Lower Cretaceous volcanism and metalliferous fluids leaking along taphrogenic lineaments. In and around the phosphorites, numerous traces of secondary uranium mineralization occur. Over 500 geochemical samples of outcropping rock, wadi and playa sediments, overburden and groundwaters were taken over an area of approximately 9000 sq km. Most samples were analyzed for 25 major and trace elements by nebulization ICPAES; for As, Sb, Bi and Se by hydride generation and ICPAES; and for U, Th and La and other REE by neutron activation analysis.

PT Indo Muro Kencana (PT IMK) is a surface gold and silver mine located in Mt. Muro area, Central Kalimantan province, Indonesia. The mining operations of multiple open pits using combination of excavator and haul truck is operated. This operation is performed in two shifts in a day. The articulated dump truck (ADT) with capacity of 40 t and 60 t deliver ore to the mineral processing plant and discard waste material to the waste dump area. Overall, PT IMK’s mining operation department is consisting of two sections, namely mining operation section and drill and blast section. Firstly, mine operation section is responsible to manage loading, hauling, pit service (mine dewatering, earthwork, road maintenance) and mine operation engineering. Secondly, drill and blast section is in charge to manage drilling and blasting (blast engineering, blasting operation, explosive permit and magazine or explosive storage). Additionally, conventional blasting method (ore-waste blasting) with non-electric initiation system is used and sleep blasting is undertaken as bulk explosive is buried for maximum two days. The first purpose of this paper is to elucidate about role of mining engineer in mining operation department (mining operation engineer and D&B engineer). At this point, mining operation engineering practice (fleet management system, production control and mining manpower management) and also blasting daily practice will be elucidated. Daily blasting practice is consisting of surface blast design, explosive engineering, sleep blast practice and the concept of scaled depth of burial to ensure a safe work environment in blasting activity. Next, the second purpose of this paper is to explore workforce evolution and future skills for mining engineer in surface mining operation. Furthermore, strategy to advance future skills such as mining continuous improvement program, training and skills development for mining engineer (mining operation engineer and D&B engineer) in order to develop their skills is also discussed. It is expected that in the future, these future mining leaders will become new mining leader, for instance mining superintendents, D&B superintendents and mining managers. In conclusion, it is clear that awareness about workforce evolution, professional development, training, skills development, mining economics awareness and mining continuous improvement program are essentially required as professional development for mining engineer (mining operation engineer and D&B engineer), in order to be commercially competitive in their future career and in order to be adapted with future workforce evolution in mining.

Reconciliation of metal production from a sublevel cave (SLC) mining operation is a complicated process. SLC reconciliation is unlike reconciliation for open stope operations, where a tonnage of extracted ore can be assigned to an exact volume of in situ ore, and a direct comparison made between the estimation of contained metal and actual metal production. In SLC operations the ore extracted from a particular SLC drawpoint will be composed in part from the parcel of freshly blasted in situ material, in part from varying components of ore material (from cave stocks) flowing down from other previously mined areas vertically above the current draw position and in part from external dilution. This leads to difficulties in reconciling production grades against estimated grades. The problem is that we know how much metal we have produced but we can not precisely say where it has come from. Metal production reconciliation is fundamental in assessing ore reserve estimation accuracy and performance and in determining a draw management strategy for SLC mining. In terms of contained metal, differences in extracted metal compared to in situ metal represent changes to cave stocks. To generate local estimates of the cave stocks, differences in metal for each ring are treated as additions to or subtractions from a series of vertical columns of stocks extending throughout the height of the cave. The sum of metal differences (extracted versus in situ) for each vertical column results in a residual metal map at any particular mining level. The metal maps show areas where the metal production has been greater than or less than expected. The maps also highlight areas in the cave where residual metal is located, areas where targeted overdraw can reduce cave stocks.

The sixth international symposium on mining with fill nearly coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Jubilee Symposium on Mine Filling. That symposium, held in August 1973 in Mount Isa, in part to commemorate the 80th anniversary of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was the first in what has turned out to be a very successful series of symposia. Subsequent symposia were held in Sudbury, Canada (1978), Lulea, Sweden (1983), Montreal, Canada (1989) and Johannesburg, South Africa (1993). The series of symposia has now become an established part of the mining industry calendar, and it will be interesting to see which country is given the honour, and accepts the challenge, to organise the next symposium. When the chairman of the conference organising committee invited (or was it instructed?) me to prepare and deliver one of the keynote addresses, his request was for me to be in parts historical, controversial, predictive and entertaining. The mix was left to me, with one proviso - that an early pioneer of mine filling in Australia be given due recognition. The chairman of the organising committee alone will be able to determine if I fulfilled the last objective. My success, or otherwise, with the other objectives will have to be judged by my fellow delegates. One way of predicting the future, or some small part of it, is to revisit where we have already been with a view to determining the existence of any trends that may impact on the future. An historical review of filling practice and research, with special emphasis on Australian experience in particular and worldwide in general over the previous 25 years, will enable me to address the historical and predictive objectives.

In August 1996 a Microseismic Monitoring System developed by ISS International Limited was installed at the Pasminco Broken Hill Mine -Southern Cross area. The project aims were to:Assist in daily safety management in a mine environment which exhibits one of the highest occurrences of microseismic activity recorded in the Australian mining industry. Be used as a proactive tool in design of future development and stoping. The project to-date has been an unqualified success in achieving both goals. Consequently the system is being expanded from 6 to 14 monitoring sites.

Arc-type volcanic activity has been a major feature of the late Cenozoic geological evolution of the Pacific-Australian plate boundary in the northern New Zealand region. The timelspace distribution patterns of arc-type rocks reflect changes in the nature of the plate boundary as it has evolved. Inception of volcanism began in the north during earliest Miocene times (26 Ma) following ophiolite emplacement and during the next 10 Ma developed into a volcanic arc segment extending south to the present position of the central North Island. The northern part of the arc became extinct about 15 Ma ago, but activity continued in the central (Coromandel) part of the arc until about 5 Ma ago. In late Pliocene and Quaternary times volcanic activity has become concentrated in a northeast trending zone which is collinear with the Tonga-Kermadec Arc.

Gold miners have been underperforming the price of gold for a number of years. So why has the æmarketÆ undervalued our gold miners relative to what they have been mining? The low valuation ascribed to gold mining companies is largely attributable to their profit performance. In the period since 2006 the price of gold in A$ has risen about $900/oz, but the real cash margin (operating cash costs + cost of finding and/or acquiring deposits + the cost of bringing them into production) has only risen about A$100. Rising operating costs are a major part of this reduction in real margin. Energy and labour costs have risen more than the inflation rates across a number of countries as have taxes, royalties, etc. There are however, more significant contributors to the rising cost base. Firstly, in 2006 the average gold grade was 2.0 g/t; today it is 1.3 g/t. Secondly, strip ratios (for surface mines) have increased by 19 per cent during this time. Open cut mining equipment unit output across the world has dropped by 26 per cent during 2006 - 2012. Finally, costs have risen by 55 per cent during this time period. Consequently, there is now 3.8 times more mining cost required to produce an ounce of gold from surface mines compared with 2006. The decline in gold grade looks to be a permanent trend as does increasing strip ratio if output is to be maintained. Costs will continue to rise although cost control will be necessary. Reversing the decline in equipment performance and closing the gap between median and best practice provides the hope for a sustainable reversal of cost increases. The current gap between best practice and median performance has grown to 112 per cent for mining trucks, 168 per cent for excavators and 169 per cent for front end loaders. Closing this gap is the potential for a more profitable future. For most gold mining companies improving mining efficiency is not an option; it is an imperative.CITATION:Lumley, G, 2013. The Managalase area is remote and little visited by geologists or prospectors. Yet it holds the key to the tectonics and petrology of this part of Papua. The eastern Managalase plateau (M, Figure 1) lies between the Hydrographers andesite volcano (H) and Sesara shoshonite volcano (S) to the south of Popondetta on the Papua Peninsular. It contains over 30 small volcanic centres in an area of only 400 km2 . To the south and west lies the basic-utrabasic belt (B-UB) of the Morobe arc. This is the leading edge of oceanic plate obducted over the Owen Stanley Metamorphics during the lower Eocene time. To the east and southeast lies the Cape Vogel geosyncline where the western end of the Woodlark basin spreading centre enters mainland Papua. The extension of the spreading centre as a suture might pass as far as the southern margin of the Musa Coastal plain. A new pattern of plate tectonic motions has been determined by the global positioning system and the southern margin of the Woodlark plate has been redefined (Tregoning et al, 1998; Taylor, Goodliffe and Martinez, et al, 1999). The Managalase plateau is margined by two inferred faults. These outline a cusp protruding from the main basic-ultrabasic belt where these rocks are near the surface. The westerly arm of the cusp passes through the centres of the Hydrographers and Mount Lamington andesitic volcanoes. Mount Lamington overlies Quaternary alluvium and underlying Tertiary sediments (Arculus et al, 1983) but members of the basic-ultrabasic belt crop out on the southern flanks. The easterly arm of the cusp is an inferred shear zone (and ? fault) connecting up with the terminus of the suture on the Musa coastal plain. Movements on the two faults forming the cusp are thought to have produced the conjugate N-S, E-W faults on the plateau (Ruxton, 1966). To the east, and isolated, are the two large andesitic stratovolcanoes of Mounts Victory (V) and Trafalgar (T) which together form Cape Nelson. Mount Victory was last active in the 1890s. The Waiowa shoshonitic volcano explosion centres (W), last active in 1943 - 1944, lie near the suture adjacent to the actively rising Goropu mountains. Extension in these mountains is clearly demonstrated by the soil profiles being skeletal along a bounding fault and ageing uphill. The incision of small parallel ravines also dig deeper further upslope from the fault. To the south-east of Mount Suckling (K) the Dayman Dome is also an expanding mass. The Owen Stanley fault is parallel, and located to the south of the suture. The Mesozoic metamorphics form the backbone of the Papuan Peninsula. The intramontane Musa Trough is thought to date from the mid-Tertiary. At the eastern end of the trough Pleistocene and Recent ultrabasic breccias and alkali basalt crop out (Green, 1961).

The Waterview Connection will complete Auckland’s long-planned Western Ring Route, a 48 km north-south motorway alternative to State Highway 1 that bypasses the central city to the west. The project involves construction of 5 km of new motorway – half of it underground in tunnels – to connect the Southwestern (State Highway 20) and Northwestern (State Highway 16) motorways.The Western Ring Route will link the major population and industrial centres of Manukau, Auckland and North Shore to give the region the connected and resilient strategic road transport system it needs to underpin economic growth and sustainable development. It will also provide a direct motorway link between Auckland’s central business district (CBD) and international airport.The project involves construction of twin 2.4 km driven tunnels with an outside diameter of 14.41 m beneath residential suburbs, a major arterial road and a rail corridor. Enabling works began in January 2012 while tunnel construction using an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) began in November 2013.This presentation introduces the Waterview Connection project, its role in the development of the Auckland motorway network, its procurement process, the alliance delivery model and an overview of the project’s design features and construction progress to date.Design and construction highlights of the presentation include the TBM start-up, turnaround and breakthrough arrangements as well as the experience gained during the first tunnelling drive. Gold mining companies who are signatories of the International Cyanide Management Code (visit www.cyanidecode.org for further information) are required to measure WAD cyanide on-line and destroy WAD cyanide in excess of specified limits. Weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide refers to those cyanide species liberated at a moderate pH of 4.5 such as HCN(aq) and CN-, and the majority of Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag complexes with low dissociation constants. It is potentially toxic to humans and animals. Recognising and in response to the gold mining industryÆs need for an on-line WAD cyanide measurement device, Mintek recently developed the WAD Cynoprobe. The WAD cyanide analysis technique is based on the use of a ligand exchange reagent that liberates WAD cyanide from metal-cyano complexes. The ligand exchange reaction is represented by the following chemical equation: Metal(CN)X + yLigand <-> Metal(Ligand)y + xCN- The plant filtrate is treated with a ligand exchange reagent, to liberate WAD cyanide, before measuring the free cyanide concentration via amperometry. The instrument proved to be accurate and reliable in the laboratory as well as under industrial gold plant conditions during various trials. It has gained wide-spread commercial acceptance both locally and internationally. However, itÆs recent exposure to complex ore types have called for refinements to the analysis technique. It has been further developed to improve its precision and accuracy and to remove reagent and thiosulfate interferences. Its compatibility with the most commonly used destruction oxidants has also recently been investigated. The WAD Cynoprobe may be configured to measure both free and WAD cyanide concentration. Its fast analysis time, approximately 5 min, makes it suitable for use in the control and optimisation of the cyanide destruction and recovery process. Proper oxidant dosage control and monitoring of effluent concentration levels will ultimately result in less cyanide and post-destruction salts discharged into the environment.
