The growth of "Unit Load-cargo handling technology in world cargo lin- er trades over the last decade has cre- ated a situation in which special pur- pose-vessels (cellular container ships, roll-on/roll-off vehicle deck ships and Lash type vessels) are rapidly replac- ing conventional cargo ships, the principal means previously available for transporting heavy lifts. Consequently heavy lift traffic has tended to accumulate awaiting ship- ment, especially where discharge is required in "off beat" locations. A partial solution to this problem will be provided by new and small but exceptionally versatile ocean going heavy lift carriers now finding their way into world trade routes. These new ships combine extremely high lifting capacity, high manoeuvreability and exceptionally shallow draft with bow and stern Ro/Ro capability. They can handle rolling loads of exceptional size and weighing up to 1,000 tons Each. But the problem is a far larger and more serious but essentially a domestic one. Major industrial pro- jects in Australia will require pro- gressively heavier and larger plant and construction sites are becoming much more inaccessible. Whereas these new ocean going heavy lift carriers have ample capacity to satisfy part of the total transport requirement, there is clear evidence to show that domestic transport resources have little if any potential for increase in capability at the same rate as demand or at the same rate as sea transport facilities. Resolution of the larger problem is within reach but only through a pro- perly co-ordinated approach to future planning for the overall needs of large scale projects on a national basis. This co-ordinated approach must involve Federal and State government transport administrators, railway and highway authorities, shipping and road haulage interests and finally the planners of the projects which require these improved heavy haulage services.

Mining faces many environmental, social and regulatory liabilities of which water management is just one. Others include site rehabilitation, carbon emissions, biodiversity offsets, strategic cropping land, subsidence, and noise and dust generation. Management of these liabilities is commonly seen as a cost of doing business and each is often independently addressed, bypassing the opportunity to reduce costs through integrated approaches. Furthermore, approaches to dealing with these liabilities tend to be constrained by a prevailing culture of engineered solutions and lack of appreciation of risk associated with alternative and hybrid alternative-engineered solutions. Suboptimal outcomes can also be reinforced by rigid regulatory constraints. While the cost of addressing operational liabilities may be a small proportion of overall mine management costs, failure to do so effectively may influence social licence to operate and, as recently demonstrated by the decision of the NSW Land and Environment Court to block expansion of the Warkworth Mine near Singleton, absolute licence to operate.Integration of environmental, social and regulatory liabilities with value-creating and risk-reduction opportunities such as beneficial water use, carbon bio-sequestration, habitat connectivity, keyline farming, improved grazing design and management systems, windbreaks and visual screens, presents opportunities to reduce risk and create value. This potential may achieve overall improved outcomes in both economic and non-economic mine performance criteria.Two case studies in beneficial use of waste water from the mining and coal seam gas (CSG) sectors (which operate under different legislation) will be used to illustrate the potential to address mine development, operational and closure liabilities by understanding opportunities to reduce risk and create value through a holistic water management framework. The technical requirements and alternative approaches to beneficial use of mine water are addressed, along with the direct economic benefits for mine operational costs and opportunities to positively engage communities and build resilience into social licence to operate. Bowen Basin coalmines suffer from hot and humid ambient conditions during the summer period. The ambient conditions combined with high VRTs, increasing depth of working and significant equipment heat loads results in heat issues underground. Coalmines operate under heat stress management plans as required by legislation with associated trigger action response plans (TARPs). Some mines also employ refrigeration as part of their heat management strategy.A recent case study was conducted on a mine producing about 4.5 Mt/a from their longwall and experiences summer surface ambient temperatures of about 23.5ºCwb. The expected virgin rock temperature is 46ºC at 300 m depth. The mine currently introduces a modest amount of surface cooling at the portal using ‘off-the-shelf’ air conditioning units. This system does not effectively manage face temperature primarily due to positional inefficiency.Underground conditions remain hot in summer and work is typically undertaken in accordance with the Heat TARP. This has a direct impact on the productivity of crews, worker comfort and also negatively impacts the workforce morale. The mine commissioned a study to determine a refrigeration strategy aimed at maintaining underground conditions below TARP levels 90 per cent of the time.The ventilation network model was calibrated against actual temperature data to simulate the heat loads including longwall, conveyor system, strata and auxiliary diesel fleet. This model was then used to determine the cooling requirements for bulk surface cooling, bulk underground cooling, surface district cooling and underground district cooling strategies.These estimates were used to undertake a total owning cost trade-off for the different strategies. The study concluded that a chilled air shaft has the lowest technical risk but the highest total owning cost due to shaft development needs. Introducing chilled water to an underground cooler via boreholes offered the lowest total owning cost and was therefore recommended.CITATION:van den Berg, L and Olsen, M, 2017. Minerals and Metals Group (MMG) subsidiary Lane Xang Minerals Ltd operates a single site copper and gold mine near Sepon in Lao PDR. Gold production commenced in 2002 and first cathode copper production was in March 2006. Plant throughputs for gold and copper are currently 2.5 Mt/yr and 1.4 Mt/yr respectively; use of a second tailings dam has commenced accordingly. Although the increased catchment area creates opportunities for more storage to reduce demand on other water sources, especially during the dry season, it also creates greater requirements for water treatment capacity.The water balance for mining operations in a tropical monsoon environment with dry winters presents on going management challenges. A successful mining operation depends on a careful balance of water inputs and outputs. The challenge prior to every wet season is having enough storage capacity to absorb potential rainfall. Plant operation in the dry season benefits from water captured and stored from the wet season which reduces the dependence on river water. Release of excess water to the environment is necessary to cope with the overall positive water balance and depends on suitable and effective treatment of water in accordance with the environmental guidelines.Ausenco has recently built and commissioned a second water treatment plant at the Sepon Copper Plant to process tailings decant water.  The objective of the second Sepon water treatment facility is to increase the site water discharge capacity to maintain the water balance and reduce the dependence on river water.  Decant water treatment is required to precipitate the contained heavy metals prior to discharging to surrounding wetlands.  The main metal that needs to be removed from the site water to meet discharge water quality requirements is manganese, as heavy metals are already precipitated to required levels in neutralisation before the tailings are sent to the storage facilities. A site layout provision for removal of manganese to produce a saleable carbonate precipitate is incorporated in the polishing plant design (future installation).

Substantial efforts by the industry, as well as by process and equipment designers, have resulted in many innovative developments that provide cost effective reductions in water usage. This paper showcases four emerging best practices in industry including examples of recent installations. Belt press filters are a small fraction of the operating and capital cost of alternative ædryÆ tailings technologies. This gives operators who must ædryÆ their tailings a competitive advantage and makes such operations much more sustainable. The new generation of belt filter presses use less energy, produces lower cake moistures and better disposal stacking properties. The need for tailings storage facilities may be eliminated or in some cases high-grade tailings can be dewatered and sold as a low value product. Mining applications include sand tailings, sinter plant waste, coal tailings and power station fly ash. Flip-flow screening machines are proven worldwide in the dry classification of coal and other minerals, reducing the size of beneficiation plants, whilst reducing energy, water demand and media consumption. They also allow the screening of wet/sticky materials not able to be sized using conventional screens. Lamella separators are used for toxic water clarification and/or sludge thickening in many downstream metal industries with the underflow often dewatered in a belt filter press. Such low cost, high capacity thickeners could also be used instead of conventional thickeners at smaller mines. The simple and reliable continuous washing upward flow (CWUF) sand filters have been used for treatment of waste water from coal preparation plants and steel works as well as in the production of potable water. The filtered waste water from mining processes can then either be reused or discharged from site. Other installations include cleaning mine water to prevent the blocking of dust suppression spray nozzles.

Developments in the technology of explosive production and deliveryallow a greater amount of flexibility in rock fragmentation by blasting. The rock fragmentation efficiency of an explosive is currently given by a rating which is determined by the explosive manufacturers using proprietary formulae and methodology. Hence, comparison of explosives from different manufacturers may be misleading. Modeling of explosive energy, using a thermochemical code such as CHEETAH provides an objective standard by which the likely performance of different explosive formulations can be determined. Such modeling can be used for optimisation of explosive composition to match specific rockfragmentation objectives.

A data science based dilution study was conducted to identify the causes of dilution at South32’s Cannington Mine (Cannington), a large open stoping operation. In terms of industry benchmarks for unplanned dilution, Cannington is already performing very well, and so opportunities for improvement are more difficult to identify. The study is based upon back analysis of nearly 150 case studies from the mines reconciliation database, and has quantified the relative effect and significance levels for the following dilution parameters; time until paste filling, faulting and cable bolt reinforcement. Specifically, significant contributions were associated with faults and stope open duration. Quantifying the effect of faults on stability graph accuracy enabled a site specific adjustment to improve the predictive ability of the Cannington stability graph (unstable stope specificity improved from 63 per cent to 74 per cent). Despite Cannington’s already high levels of stope performance compared to industry benchmarks, data science methods have identified a complex interaction between identified dilution factors (ie stope open duration, presence of faults and cablebolting). Specifically, a third order Factorial ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) provided evidence that stope open duration reduces the effectiveness of cable bolts in faulted ground (average dilution = 2.1 m, p-value = 0.13). These results are consistent with site observations of a relationship between the stope open duration and the extent of failure when unravelling on a fault, even when cables are present.CITATION:Maher, K, Stewart, P C and Robotham, S, 2016. Extraction and Characterisation of Extracellular Polymeric Substances from the Mineral Surface During Bioleaching of Chalcopyrite Concentrate A mixed culture of moderately thermophilic microorganisms was used to bioleach chalcopyrite concentrate in a stirred tank reactor. The results show that up to 84.7 per cent of copper extraction could be achieved in 24 days at a pulp density of 6 per cent. The leaching rate of chalcopyrite concentrate tended to increase with an increase of dissolved total iron concentration. Furthermore, the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) on the surface of the chalcopyrite concentrate was extracted and analysed. EPS was extracted at the first, third, eighth, 16th and 24th day during bioleaching, which mainly consisted of proteins, lipids, sugars and ferric irons. After the eighth day the total amount of EPS remained relatively constant. However, the amount of ferric iron in the EPS decreased in a large scale. The ore residue analysis indicates that the decrease of ferric iron was mainly due to the formation of jarosite on the mineral surface.

For the past 120 years, Portland cement manufacture has been undertaken on the shores of the Whangarei Harbour in northern New Zealand. Through a serendipitous conjunction of geo-chemistry, the argillaceous marl found on Limestone Island in the harbour and Tikorangi Hill provides a perfect mix of the various elements required for strong and durable cement. Golden Bay Cement, and its predecessors, have been the guardians and managers of the use of these minerals. As the demands of the concrete industry have increased, so have the needs of the manufacturing process. Careful mapping of the resource at both Portland and Wilsonville Quarries has been undertaken. This has allowed the Company to change the Quarry operation from a purely volume basis to one of selection and blending of constituent minerals. Within the manufacturing process, change has also been introduced. Analytical techniques, using x-ray fluorescence spectrometry, microscopy and the application of modem data collation, has allowed fine tuning of the process. The Company now produces an increasing diverse range of products for both the domestic New Zealand market and exports to various South Pacific countries. This paper discusses the processing of limestone and æcement rockÆ into cement clinker, an intermediate synthetic mineral ground into cement. It examines control and blending regimes, and some methods used in determining process efficiency. An important technique ærediscoveredÆ has been the application of microscopy to clinker.  Examination of the major silicate minerals enables interpretation of the kiln processing and feedback to process operators. It also enables a prediction of indicated performance when ground into cement. Examples this paper give an insight into the use of minerals from Northland in some of the more important construction projects in modem New Zealand.

The Winton Basin is one of three Southland sub-basins. The oldest known sediments are Early Oligocene terrestrial shales, sands and lignites deposited in half grabens formed as a result of oblique extension. A marine transgression in the Oligocene deposited mid-outer shelf to upper bathyal mudstones. Shallowing of the basin and tectonic quiessence lead to limestone deposition in the Early Miocene. Regional tilting led to uplift in the north and east and deposition of terrestrial lignites and gravels across the basin and the basement high to the south.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are being increasingly used by the mineral exploration industry in the search for new ore deposits. A mineral exploration GIS links geological and geophysical data by virtue of their geographic location in a digital map setting. Geological and geophysical data are categorised into a number of themes or layers within a mineral exploration GIS. These layers may include polygonal information such as rock type and tenements, line information such as faults and fold axes, point information such as mines and mineral occurences, and images such as gridded geochemistry and aeromagnetics. A mineral exploration GIS is a powerful tool to help the explorationist comprehend the spatial associations and interrelationships of his/her data. These spatial associations can be integrated with a mineral genesis model, to create a mineral prospectivity map to more effectively target exploration. Arguably a competent geologist who has a good understanding of the genesis of the local ore deposit types and knows their local geology backwards could intuitively derive a mineral prospectivity map. However, in an era of rapid data accumulation from many different disciplines, the ability to assimilate and understand is a huge task for any individual. A mineral exploration GIS enables the explorationist to spend more time analysing data and testing ideas, rather than finding and manipulating data into compatible formats.

Arc-type volcanic activity has been a major feature of the late Cenozoic geological evolution of the Pacific-Australian plate boundary in the northernNew Zealand region. The time/space distribution patterns of arc-type rocks reflect changes in the nature of the plate boundary as it has evolved. Inception of volcanism began in the north during earliest Miocene times (26 Ma) following ophiolite emplacement and during the next 10 Ma developed into a volcanic arc segment extending south to the present position of the central North Island. The northern part of the arc became extinct about 15Ma ago, but activity continued in the central (Coromandel) part of the arc until about 5 Ma ago. In late Pliocene and Quaternary times volcanic activity has become concentrated in a northeast trending zone which is collinear with the Tonga-Kermadec Arc.   These time/space patterns can be interpreted in two ways. Firstly, if relative plate motion was essentially transform in the region prior to 26 Ma then a small change in the relative plate vectors may have initiated subduction and the associated volcanism. Southward evolution of the arc can then be seen as the straightening and extension of a single arc. Alternatively, the distribution of volcanic rocks can be interpreted as the capture of a relatively short lived arc by southward migration of the dominant Tonga-Kermadec subduction system.

Surface subsidence caused by coal mining operations was the subject of a very successful symposium organised by the Illawarra Branch of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in February, 1973. This symposium dealt with the principles of subsidence and overseas experiences arising out of underground mining. Since that time the New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources and Development (formerly the Department of Mines) has incorporated in the approval for pillar extraction certain conditions related to the monitoring of surface movement. Surveys and plans are required to be kept at mines where total or partial extraction of coal takes place. This paper traces the monitoring of surface movement in the Northern Coalfields of New South Wales over the past ten years. Reference is made to the National Coal Board's Subsidence Engineers' Handbook (1975) and how the guidelines expressed therein have been beneficial. Mining engineers in Australia are able to plan underground workings where minimum subsidence is allowable and are in a position to foreshadow the surface effects where total pillar extraction is carried out. In certain cases such surface effects can be minimised by structural design in buildings or pipelines.

When it comes to structuring major mining contracts, the two most widely adopted formats are æmeasure and valueÆ and æcost-plusÆ. A problem with both of these formats is the difficultly of aligning the objectives of the mining company with those of the contractor to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. An alternative contractual arrangement is for the mining company to enter into an Alliance arrangement with the contractor, linking remuneration to mine performance across a range of targets. These targets can change over time as operational requirements change.   The aims of this paper are to: +        outline alternative types of mining contracts, as well as their strengths and pitfalls; +        describe the philosophy behind the Alliance contract at Newmont Waihi GoldÆs Favona underground mine; and +        identify some of the keys to success and pitfalls to avoid when implementing an Alliance.

In order to increase productivity and decrease reducing agent rate (RAR) of blast furnaces, slag content of sinter ore must be decreased. However, gangue content in iron ore tends to increase because of resource depletion. Therefore, amount of high-grade concentrate in sinter ore feeds should be increased, but this situation causes a decrease in permeability of the sintering bed so that the productivity of sinter process decreases. In order to increase the amount of concentrate, NSSMS has developed the P-type separate granulation method, RF-MEBIOS and SPEx II technologies. These technologies have been introduced to actual sintering machines. In this report, a new technology using microparticles of iron ore is proposed to increase the amount of concentrate in sinter blends. Basic experiments simulating the sinter making process using microparticles of iron ore were undertaken. Crushed pisolite, containing >60 wt per cent -10 µm was prepared for binder. The pisolite microparticle binder was mixed with another Australian sinter feed ore in a high-speed agitating mixer. They were mixed for about one minute, and then granulated using a pan pelletiser. After that, they were added to another raw material mixed by a drum mixer, and then charged in a pot for a sinter pot test. As a result, when the amount of concentrate increased from 13 wt per cent to 20 wt per cent, productivity was almost kept constant using pisolite microparticle binder.CITATION:Kamijo, C, Yamaguchi, Y, Matsumura, M, Kawaguchi, T and Nomura, S, 2017. Bioleaching of Weathered Saprolite - Heavy Metal Adaptation Mechanisms of Aspergillus foetidus Nickel laterite ores remain important to the future supply of Ni and Co as they contain the bulk of known nickel and cobalt reserves (80 per cent and 90 - 95 per cent respectively). Current commercial extractions of Ni and Co from nickel laterite ores are energy intensive and operational costs are high. Microbial leaching of oxide ores has the potential to offer a much needed step-change in the technology for processing laterite ores. Biological leaching of low-grade nickel laterite is based on a non-traditional leaching of oxide minerals using heterotrophic micro-organisms. The organisms solubilise metals by excreting organic acids; these acids then form complexes with heavy metals. Optimisation of the process in in-situ application, however, has been hampered by the toxicity of the heavy metals that are being leached by the organisms. Our recent study has shown that organisms are able to develop tolerance towards heavy metals by adaptation. This study examined the extracellular metal detoxification mechanisms of A. foetidus in 0.2 per cent (wt/v) to 0.7 per cent (wt/v) of weathered saprolite ore. To support our analysis, FTIR, CHNS and microscopy were used to confirm the participation of specific functional groups in the extracellular detoxification process.
