During the year 1933, in the Texas Panhandle, 113 oil wells were completed, adding 33,337 bbl. to the daily potential of the field. The field potential on Jan. 1, 1933, as determined by the Texas Railroad Commission, was 149,260 bbl., with a daily allowable production of 41,000 bbl. The potential was raised gradually, until on July 16, 1933, it reached 155,344 bbl. with a daily allowable of 55,000 bbl. This potential and allowable was maintained over a period from July 16, 1933, to Sept. 8, 1933, when the potential was reduced to 136,893, with a daily allowable of 43,727 bbl. Since Sept. 8, 1933, there has been a gradual increase, until on Jan. 1, 1934, the field potential reached 159,740 bbl. with a daily allowable of 42,000 bbl. Of this amount 26,429 bbl. arc "marginal oil" and 2682 bbl. are exempt on account of water. Deepening of Wells During the year 64 wells were deepened, increasing their total oil production 9631 bbl. per day. Of this amount the Gray County granite wash contributed 9256 bbl. from 57 wells. It has been found in many places that the granite wash carries an additional oil pay from 50 to 75 ft. below sea level. A MELT of pure electrolytic iron with about 0.4 per cent. sulfur and 7 per cent. manganese was prepared in connection with a study of inclusions in iron. The alloy darkened rapidly when etched with a 10 per cent. alcoholic solution of nitric acid, and microscopic examination revealed the presence of a semimartensitic, semi-Widmanstättian structure (Figs. 1 and 2) closely resembling the structures found by Benedicks in his artificially prepared "meteoric iron." 1 The structures found by Benedicks were readily explained by the presence in his alloy of the two well known iron-nickel solid solutions, taenite and kamacite, and of their eutectoid (?) aggregate, plessite. By analogy, one would infer the existence of similar phases in the iron-manganese alloy just described, such as inference being strengthened by the similarity displayed in many ways by nickel and manganese in their effects on iron. IRON-MANGANESE ALLOTS ARE REGARDED AS HOMOGENEOUS Heterogeneity of iron-manganese alloys has not been recognized heretofore, judging from the data of standard metallographic books and those of original papers. In fact, iron and manganese are quite generally regarded as completely miscible in the solid state. Dr. Rosenhain,2 for example, writes: Alloys of group (a), of which those of gold-silver, iron-manganese, and copper-nickel are examples, when allowed to crystallize sufficiently slowly to attain their condition of final equilibrium, present a microstructure exactly similar to that of a pure metal-the homogeneous character of the molten solution is in that case so completely maintained that the microscope cannot detect the presence of any second constituent.

ONE of the important mineral discoveries of the eighteenth century was , that of the Minas Geraes, Brazil; diamond fields. The production of this and of .other diamond discoveries in neighboring states made Brazil the premier producer of diamonds, succeeding India; its 140 years of supremacy finally passed to- South Africa- 60 years ago. Three times have diamonds contributed heavily to Portugal's somewhat checkered financial history; first in the sixteenth and seventeenth- centuries when the diamond trade of India was controlled by its citizens residing in ,Goa, later in the late eighteenth and the first 75 years of the nineteenth century when the Brazilian fields were the world's source of diamonds, and now, when the Angola diamond mines are the principal source of revenue of its colony, Portuguese West Africa. Certain phases in the history of the administration of the Brazilian field are sufficiently curious to warrant description.

THROUGHOUT the Colonial era, Philadelphia was easily , the leading city of North America, and it still held that position at the end of the period, with a population of about 25,000, though closely pressed by Boston, which had slightly over 20,000, and New York, which had nearly as many. It was the center of a region in which mineral industry was important. Thomas Rutter's bloomery, built in the Schuylkill valley in 1716, was quickly followed by many others, and during the Colonial period at least 20 blast furnaces, 45 forges, and iron- works of other types were built in eastern Pennsylvania, which easily led all the other colonies in iron manufacture. During the Revolutionary period others were erected as far west as Fort Loudon, in the Cumberland c alley.^ After 1800 the rapid development of the anthracite mining industry profoundly affected Philadelphia's, development, since transportation of the coal was then necessarily by water, and the streams of the anthracite . regions mostly flowed into either the Schuylkill or the Delaware Rivers. With an abundant near-by supply of coal and iron, with the seat of government, which had been there since 1774, and with a National Bank established there in 1791, one would have seemed safe in prophesying, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, that Philadelphia would permanently remain the leading city of the United States. Education in Philadelphia was at first wholly in the hands of the Quakers, who had established a "Public School" there in 1689, but in November 1739 George Whitefield, who had created a sensation in England by his preaching, though only 24 years old, passed through Philadelphia on his way to Georgia to found an orphan school there. In the Coast Mountains approximately 110 miles north of Vancouver, the gold mine of Bralorne- Pioneer Mines Ltd. lies at an elevation of 3500 ft. The deepest or 41 level in the mine is at an elevation of 1400 ft below sea level, and the rock temperature on this level is 122.5°F. The thermal gradient is 1 "F increase in temperature for each 67.5 ft increase in depth. The mine produces between 500 and 600 tons per clay, utilizing an adit two internal shafts, and one service shaft from surface. The Queen shaft, extending from the 26 to the 41 level, IS the deepest, and most production now comes from this area. Stoping in by cut and fill using mill tailing hydraulic backfill.

WHEN I came out of Stanford University in 1922, the out-look for men trained in geology, petroleum engineering, and mining was indeed dismal; in fact, so much so that most of us looked upon our future in those fields as pretty hopeless. Neither our professors nor those men in industry with whom we came in contact gave us any enthusiastic encouragement as to the future of ourselves or the fields we had chosen for our labors. I believe that the attitude of pessimism which saturates everyone about graduation time is lament able and short-sighted, and may often start a young man on his way with an attitude of defeatism. Instead, he should be starting out knowing that he can expect hard work and keen competition, but that the fields of his labours are expanding at an accelerated rate, and that strong, energetic efforts will as always accomplish highly satisfactory results.

ALTHOUGH few changes can be reported in educational methods at the mineral technology schools during 1940, other events have taken place of direct interest to, and that will have a profound effect upon, mineral industry education on the United States. In the erection of new buildings, some notable changes have been made on the campus, The U.S. Bureau of Mines Experiment Station at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, was dedicated on May 20. The construction and equipment of this building cost between $300,000 and $400,000. It will be the general headquarters for the metallurgical division of the Bureau and will have a pronounced effect upon the mineral industries research program at the University.

Introduction This papers describes some of the latest improvements that have been incorporated or planned by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. to reduce operating costs and improve pellet quality. The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. operates and manages mining, beneficiation, and pelletizing operations in Michigan, Canada, and western Australia. This paper deals with the grate-kiln pelletizing operations at Republic, Humboldt, Tilden, Empire, and Pioneer in Michigan, and the Adams and Sherman in Ontario, Canada. Table I characterizes each operation in regard to location, ore type, pellet capacity and date that pellets were first produced. All of the operations with the exception of Pioneer and Tilden, utilize downdraft-two-pass grate cycles of drying followed by preheating. Pioneer utilizes an all-downdraft, three-pass grate cycle which consists of three drying zones followed by the preheat zone. The Pioneer and Tilden cycles have been described previously (Lindroos and Koski, 1966; Villar and Dawe, 1975; Koski, 1977). Tilden utilizes a three-pass grate cycle with a stage of updraft drying, followed by two downdraft drying stages. Recuperation systems which supply hot gases to a drying zone from second stage cooling were designed and fur¬nished for Tilden I. Tilden II will be identical. Empire IV will also be furnished with a recuperation system. The Adams grate¬kiln system was retrofitted with a recuperation system. This paper will summarize some of the efforts that are in effect or planned for grate-kiln pelletizing systems to: (1) reduce operating and maintenance costs, (2) reduce energy requirements, (3) improve product quality, and (4) meet environmental standards.

OVER the past two decades, the Cr-Ni stainless steels, popularly termed 18-8 steels, have been used in ever increasing amounts in the aircraft, automotive, chemical, transportation, and building industries.' The contribution of nickel to these steels is associated with its strong austenite forming tendencies which assure good hot and cold forming characteristics, and with its beneficial influence upon corrosion resistance, especially in oxidizing acids. The adjustment of the chromium and nickel contents has been used advantageously in controlling the rollability and the response of the mechanical properties of these steels to cold reduction. With the advent of the jet age and the government stockpiling of nickel, considerable emphasis has been placed upon the development of satisfactory low nickel or nickel-free substitute austenitic stainless steels, especially for nonmilitary applications.2 Fer-ritic 17 pct Cr (AISI Type 430) stainless steel has been effectively substituted for the austenitic grades in applications with mildly corrosive exposure. However, the limited formability and ferromagnetic behavior of this grade do not permit its satisfactory use for many applications. To achieve better formability in a nenmagnetic steel and conserve nickel, a number of low nickel substitute austenitic grades of stainless steel have been developed in recent years. In most of these steels, manganese and nitrogen have been substituted for a portion of the nickel content, for example, 17 pct Cr-4 pct Ni-6 pct Mn (AISI Type 201), 18 pct Cr-5 pct Ni-8 pct Mn (AISI Type 202), and 16 pct Cr-1 pct Ni-17 pct Mn, all of which contain approximately 0.15 pct N.1 The precipitation of ferrite when large ingots of these Cr-Ni-Mn-N steels are heated to temperatures high enough for conversion to slabs on conventional universal slabbing mills has seriously affected the hot workability of these steels. This has been especially true in the case of the 16 pct Cr-1 pct Ni-17 pct Mn (sometimes referred to as 15 pct Cr-1 pct Ni-15 pct Mn) composition." Because it is possible that little, if any, nickel will be available for nonmilitary stainless steel applications in the event of a national emergency, a need has existed for a nickel-free austenitic stainless steel containing hot and cold forming characteristics similar to 18-8 steels and corrosion resistance at least comparable to the 17 pct Cr ferritic steel. The aforementioned deleterious effect of ferrite upon the hot working characteristics of the 16 pct Cr-1 pct Ni-17 pct Mn, steel indicates the importance of establishing the austenite-austenite plus ferrite phase boundaries as the first step in the development of nickel-free or low nickel substitute steels. This paper presents the data collected in an elevated temperature constitutional study of the Cr-Ni-Mn-N system at the South Works of the United States Steel Corp. Experimental Procedure The 300 compositions used in the investigation were melted in a 26 Ib induction furnace and cast in 3 14 in. diam by 18 in tall hot-tcpped ingot mo1ds.

THE West Edmond oil field, which covers parts of Oklahoma, Canadian, Kingfisher, and Logan Counties in the State of Oklahoma, is in geographical extent the largest single oil field found in the state. At the present time, its area of 26,800 acres is almost twice as large as the Oklahoma City field, which hitherto was the state's largest field. Many authorities believe that the West Edmond field is the most important oil pool found in the United States since Pearl Harbor. The discovery of the field without the help of geological, geophysical, or other recognized technical information, the fact that the oil and gas accumulated in a stratigraphic or wedge-type trap, and the rapid development of the productive area under wartime conditions are some of the interesting features of the field. The West Edmond field lies west of the Oklahoma City, Britton, and Edmond fields. The field is in an area that has been considered on the west flank of the Granite Ridge line of folding, on which a number of Central Oklahoma's most important oil fields are located. Over a period of years, especially since the discovery of the new pools such as Oklahoma City, Edmond, Britton, and Crescent, the general area of the West Edmond field has been explored intensively by geological and geophysical methods. This led at times to the drilling of a few dry Wilcox sand tests.

THE Institute of Metals Division of this Institute held a joint meeting with the American Foundry- men's Association on Oct. 5-9, at Syracuse, N. Y. The registration at this meeting was about 150. There were four meetings in all, three of which were in con- junction with the American Foundrymen's Association. This combination works out very nicely and gives the I Division a number of practical foundry papers that it would not get otherwise. The sessions were well attended and the discussion was active. The session on Monday morning was of a general nature and consisted of the following subjects : " Refractory Problems in the Non-ferrous Electric Furnace Casting Shop, " "Temperature Control of Non-ferrous Alloys," "Atomized Coal System of Non-ferrous Melting," "Material Handling in a Brass Foundry." On Tuesday morning, the session was on "Aluminum and Its Alloys." The paper on permanent mold castings created a large amount of discussion, in fact so much that it had to be renewed after the close of the regular program. Aluminum is assuming a more important place every year and adds greatly to the program as a whole. One of the most remarkable meetings that this Division has ever had was held on Tuesday at noon in the form of a Round Table discussion, headed by G. K. Elliott, chairman of the Division, Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Elliott divided the members present, numbering about 80, into groups as they were seated at the tables. Each of these groups suggested a topic for discussion. They were as follows : "Fluxes on Market ;" "Simplification of Alloys;" "Pyrometric Control;" "Effect of Gas- sing Metal and Control;" "Barium Sulfate Added to Electric Furnace to Create Slight Oxidation to Remove Aluminum and Silicon;" and" Nickel in Brass."

SUPPLEMENTING surveys of the engineering profession regarding salaries and advancement, based upon data from individual engineers, a survey through a questionnaire to employers of engineers has recently been made by a subcommittee of the Engineers Joint Council's Committee on the Economic Status of the Engineer. Its object was to learn directly from employers their attitudes and policies pertaining to the selection, training, placement, advancement, guidance, and professional activities of engineering graduate employes. The questionnaire was sent in May 1946 to 174 employers of engineers, including colleges. Replies were received from 104 employers in nineteen fields of industry, who employ about 2,000,000 persons, about 40,000 of whom are engineers. The following general observations are based on the questionnaires returned. Who Are Hired? Of the co-operators 96 per cent employ cadet engineers directly upon graduation from engineering schools, but only 4 per cent recruit their engineering staffs exclusively from the new graduates. About 43 per cent hire more than half of their new engineer employes after one or more years' experience with other employers. This is evidently a matter of necessity or expediency rather than preference, because more than sixty per cent of those reporting indicate that they prefer to hire the new graduate.

The Gabbs magnesite-brucite deposit is unique in size and is one of two magnesite deposits being exploited in the United States. It is near the town of Gabbs, which is one hundred miles southeast of Reno, in west-central Nevada. The brucite was discovered in 1927; the magnesite was found while exploring the brucite. During World War II, more than 80,000 tons of magnesium metal was produced from about 900,000 tons of magnesite ore mined from these deposits. An additional 5,000,000 tons of magnesite and 1,000,000 tons of brucite have been produced for use in making magnesia refractories and chemicals. Basic Inc., presently the only producer, mines 1.5 ± 0.25 million tons of ore and waste annually using high-selective open-pit rriethods; the ore is up-graded, calcined, and processed into a variety of products. Known reserves of highgrade (less than 5 per cent CaO) magnesite ore total more than 25,000,000 tons, and there are larger tonnages of lower-grade material; brucite reserves are small. The magnesite and brucite are in generally west-dipping dolomite of the upper member of the late Triassic Luning Formation, in the over-riding plate of the Paradise thrust fault. A great variety of dikes and a stock of Cretaceous granodiorite intrude the Luning Formation in the vicinity of the magnesite-brucite deposit. The magnesite bodies are scattered over an area of about a square mile around a prong of granodiorite which extends north from the stock. The brucite is mainly in two bodies in contact with the prong of granodiorite; at the surface and along deeper cracks the brucite has weathered to hydromagnesite and artinite. In the area of magnesite-brucite mineralization, much of the dark, fine-grained, schistose, regionally-metamorphosed dolomite of the Luning Formation has been marmorized to a lighter-colored, coarser-grained, massive dolomite that is intergrown in varying proportions with the magnesite. The magnesite and marmorized dolomite can not be distinguished visually. In addition to the two varieties of dolomite, the gangue in the magnesite and brucite bodies mainly is the various varieties of dike rock, serpentine and a variety of other "contact" minerals, and "post-ore" dolomite and calcite. The magnesite ( and recrystallized dolomite) is believed to have formed by the hydrothermal replacement of the regionally metamorphosed sedimentary dolomite; alternatively it has been suggested that the magnesite is sedimentarv and formed contemporaneously with the dolomite in an embayment of the Triassic sea. Because all the igneous rocks exposed in the immediate vicinity of the magnesite deposits appear to be younger than the magnesite, the ore-forming solutions are thought to be related to a somewhat older granite which crops out elsewhere in the area. The brucite is the result of contact-metasomatic replacement of magnesite during the emplacement of the granodiorite stock.

PRESIDENT BASSETT'S gavel called the Annual Business Meeting to order shortly after 10 a. m. on Tuesday. On motion of Eugene McAuliffe, reading of the minutes was dispensed with and Mr. Bassett read his annual report of the year's activities as follows : During the year I have visited eighteen of the twenty- seven sections, making an average of GG 2/3 per cent. The invitation to come again has always been extended, but in only one case have I been able to visit the same section twice. Chicago entertained the president twice during 1930. Mrs. Bassett accompanied me on visits to ten sections. Everywhere we have found the most cordial hospitality and a gratifying enthusiasm for the Institute. If anyone had fault to find with the management or felt dissatisfied with what was being done, it was carefully concealed. I am happy to report to you an agreeable, helpful and progressive spirit in each of the sections visited.

FROM prehistoric times to our own day man has struggled against extremes of climate. Human life, originating in semi-tropical or temperate areas, was unable to progress into the northern latitudes until fire was discovered and some form of clothing provided. It was found possible to maintain life even in the hottest parts of the tropics, but only at a great sacrifice of comfort and efficiency compared with the more temperate zones, or in cooler areas with the protection of clothing and artificial heat. It was no accident, but the natural result of climatic conditions, that efficiency became the greatest and civilization the most advanced in areas where the natural climate was favorable, or in cooler zones where protection against severe cold could be se-cured by relatively simple methods of conserving or producing heat.
