In 1978, Ozark Lead Co. made the decision to expand the capacity of its mine/mill complex by 33%. The objectives of the expansion were to increase mine production capacity by 1.8 kt/d (2000 stpd), increase lead metal production by 21.8 kt/a (24,000 stpy), and to construct new facilities and modify existing equipment to accommodate increased production. This paper gives a brief explanation of the equipment installed and the overall production and metallurgical benefits realized from this expansion. The expansion was completed in the second half of 1980 with all equipment debugging and fine tuning completed by the first quarter of 1981. Concentrator modifications and improvements were basically restricted to four areas: materials handling, automation of the mill grinding circuit, increased flotation capacity, and concentrate dewatering.

WYSOR.-In the first installation we were afraid to put in the insulation throughout the hot-blast main for the reasons mentioned in the paper, but we used the insulating brick in two 8-ft. sections in straight lengths of our hot-blast mains. Owing to the high conductivity of the steel shell, the temperatures which were taken on the outside were not representative of the two temperatures resulting from heat flow through the insulating brick. The following paper is intended to be suggestive only, and to open the way for discussion and further observation. Its preparation was requested only two days before the time limit set for the submission of the papers comprising this symposium. Thus no time existed for detailed studies, so it is largely a memorandum of such facts as have come incidentally to the notice of the writer in the study of coal in the field. The field study of sulfur in coal has received very little special attention or description from coal student's. The presence of sulfur concretions is noted in hundreds of descriptions, and certain benches of a coal bed may be described as "sulfury" or the presence and position of sulfur bands may be noted in coal sections in connection with sampling. It may be accepted that some sulfur is present in all coal. The amount varies greatly in different regions, in different beds, and in the same bed in different areas. The anthracite of Rhode Island comes the nearest of any coal known to the writer of being free from sulfur, several analyses of that coal showing less than 0.1 per cent. Subbitumi-nous coals in Colorado in a few places have close to 0.2 per cent. of sulfur on the dry-coal basis and in other states subbituminous coals approach this lower limit. Bituminous coals seldom run under 0.4 per cent. of sulfur on the dry basis, though in a few places dry bituminous coals in Colorado and Washington have between 0.3 and 0.4 per cent. The better known bituminous coals have almost everywhere over 0.4 per cent. The best of the Pocahontas and New River coals run close to 0.4 per cent., but there is very little commercial coal in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, or the other states, that runs under 0.5 per cent. on the dry basis. From these minimum figures, the amount will range up to 5 or 6 per cent. or higher if visible sulfur is not excluded. It must be remembered that the usual analysis of a coal bed is not intended to give the total proportion of sulfur in the bed but the amount in the coal after the removal of the more obvious and larger sulfur masses. Professor Parr has already pointed out that, chemically, sulfur occurs in several forms: as pyrite, organic sulfur, sulfates, and possibly as un-combined sulfur. Sulfur in the form of sulfates is commonly the obvious result of the weathering of pyrite and may be found in the coal within .

After a short historical background of the process evolution, this article descvibes present-day plant facilities and operating techniques utilized for high-purity bismuth production. The plant is one of the world's largest, with an annual output of some one million pounds of refined bismutlz. PREVIOUS papers1 written by staff members of Cerro de Pasco Corp. have referred briefly to the production of refined bismuth. Since the Corporation is one of the world's foremost producers of high-purity bismuth, a detailed description of the process for extracting the metal may be of general interest. Following a short historical background of the development of the actual process, this presentation will trace the progress of bismuth from its entry into the primary smelting circuits to its concentration in electrolytic lead cell slimes. Our facilities for the treatment of anode muds will be described and the extractive methods given in some detail, with particular emphasis on the techniques which result in the production of refined metal. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Shortly after Cerro de Pasco began smelting operations at Oroya, Peru in 1922, it became apparent that the dust carried by copper converter gas contained appreciable amounts of bismuth. Although dust collection efficiency was poor prior to building of the 550-ft stack and installation of the central cottrells in 1938, a large stock of dust was accumulated during the intervening years, having the following approximate composition: Oz. per ton Ag - 11.0 Pct Sn — 0.5 Pct Pb - 49.0 Pct Zn - 6.5 Pct Bi - 2.0 Pct Insol. - 1.5 Pct Cu - 0.7 Pct Fe - 2.3 Pct Sb - 3.0 Pct S - 10.0 Pct As - 7.5 In the mid-1920's, experimental crucible melts of this dust with carbon indicated that most of the bismuth and silver, and some of the lead, could be reduced to a fairly clean bullion. Other products were a small amount of leady copper matte and a slag high in zinc, arsenic, antimony, and lead; this slag contained some tin but only small quantities of silver, bismuth, and copper. After the laboratory results had been confirmed by operation of a small reverberatory, a dust reduction furnace was constructed. The ±10 pct Bi-Pb bullion produced from this operation was stocked until 1930, when an Oroya-designed converter type furnace3 was installed for the elimination of arsenic, antimony, and some lead from the bullion. This process concentrated the bismuth from 10 to about 60 pct. By means of the bismuth process developed4 by W. C. Smith at East Chicago (1909-1914) and the discovery of a method5 for separation of lead from bismuth with chlorine gas in 1929, it became possible to begin production of refined bismuth. Unfortunately, bismuth deleaded with chlorine always contained residual chlorides, and the removal of the chlorides by caustic soda left a lead content of 0.02 to 0.04 pct. This final problem was solved6 by substitution of air-blowing for the caustic treatment, which effectively removed all excess chlorine and gave bismuth which was practically lead-free. In 1934, a pilot electrolytic lead refinery began operations at Oroya. Lead smelting was resumed in 1935 and two years later a 100-ton-per-day lead refinery was put into service. In conjunction with the latter, the present-day Anode Residue Plant was constructed. Until 1940, the plant treated both lead anode slimes and dust reduction bullion. The dust reduction furnace was shut down in that year, and all cottrell dusts (with the exception of the product from the arsenic cottrell) were mixed with pyrite and treated in a Wedge roaster to eliminate all possible arsenic. Calcine from this operation joined the sinter plant feed; hence the bismuth from the copper and lead circuits was collected in the lead bullion and subsequently in lead anode slimes from the electrolytic lead refinery. The latter source has been the only bismuth-bearing material of any consequence entering the Anode Residue Plant from late 1940 to the present. A copper refinery began operating in 1948, and the cell mud from this plant is mixed with lead slimes and processed through the same circuit, though only a small quantity of bismuth is present in electrolytic copper cell residues. DESPITE strikes, domestic production of copper and zinc in 1951 rose about 3 pct and 10 pct, respectively. Lead output fell only about 7 pct. Primary refined, including processed scrap and imported concentrates, was somewhat higher for zinc, and slightly lower for copper and lead. Prospects are for moderately larger mine and refined production in 1952 according to Standard & Poor's analysis of nonferrous metals. The survey goes on to report domestic copper prices averaged 14 pct higher in 1951, lead prices 30 pct higher, and zinc prices 32 pct higher. The 2¢ rise in zinc and lead ceilings in October will lift the average price in 1952 over 8 pet, assuming no further price change. Currently, OPS appears opposed to raising the 24 ½ ¢ copper ceiling to the 24 ½ ¢ maximum on imported metal. The steep premiums in world markets are likely to be reduced in 1952. Sales in 1951 were at new peaks. A further moderate rise is indicated for 1952. Earnings of the industry were at a new high in 1951. The increase for companies covered in the survey was perhaps 25 pet, despite a tax rate of about 53 pet, against about 40 pct. in 1950. Relatively maintained to moderately higher earnings are currently indicated for 1952. About two thirds of the companies covered in the survey raised dividends, including extras, in 1951. In general, maintained payments appear probable in 1952.

In drilling for water and oil to reasonable depths through the generally soft yielding clay and sand formation of the Coastal Plain of Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, the rotating method of drilling was adopted, principally on account of the easy and quick penetration, and the low cost of the drilling plant. In favorable ground, free of heavy gravel and rock strata, as much as 1,600 ft. has been drilled in less than 36 hr., although such performances were of course rare. Hydraulic rotary drilling, or, as it is now called, rotary drilling, was used in the above States as early as 1880. The plant consisted of an ordinary derrick, a 25-h.p. boiler, a small hoist, a steam pump, and a water swivel with hose attachment, and an ordinary flat diamond-pointed bit. The successful drilling in of a phenomenal oil well by this process on Spindletop, near Beaumont, Texas, on Jan. 10, 1901, and the ascertained impracticability of drilling subsequent wells in the same locality by other methods (owing principally to heavy quicksand under pressure from below), brought rotary drilling into great prominence, practically to the exclusion of any other process throughout the Coastal Plain, and later on elsewhere. The method, as its name implies, involves the rotation of a pipe by means of machinery placed on the derrick floor. A drill bit attached to the lower end cuts a clearance for the drill pipe, with much the same motion and effect as an auger. Water forced through the drill pipe by means of a pump, and escaping through the bit, removes the cuttings and returns to the surface outside the drill pipe. In this manner the hole is kept open, permitting the drill stem to rotate freely. The pressure of the column of muddy water holds up the walls of the hole until it has been cased. Practically all the wells of the Gulf coast region, numbering nearly 10,000, have been drilled with this system. During the last five years its use has been extended to many other States and countries.

R. E. Smallman (University of Birmingham, England)—Recently, Tedmon and Ferriss11 have determined the yield stress parameters oi and ky for tantalum by measuring the lower yield stress as a function of grain size 2d and fitting the results to a relationship of the form They report that although ky , which is taken to be a measure of the dislocation locking strength, is small (- 2 to 4 x 106 cgs units) a substantial yield drop is nevertheless observed in a normal tensile test. Niobium gives a similar result,12-14 as pointed out in the original work by Adams et a1.,12 and in order to check this apparent anomaly the yield-stress parameters of electron beam-melted niobium have recently been reanalyzed15 by the Luders strain technique. In this method the strain hardening part of the stress-strain curve is extrapolated to zero plastic strain; the intercept on the preyield portion of the curve is taken to give oi, whilst the difference between oi and the lower yield stress gives kyd-1/2. The results indicate that ky increases with increasing grain size and hence, a plot of vs d-112 yields an apparent ky, which is lower than the true value. A similar effect could account for the small ky found in the relatively pure tantalum used by Tedmon and Ferriss. The variation of ky with grain size shows that dislocations are more strongly locked in coarse-grained specimens than in fine-grained samples. In niobium, this may be attributed to the fact that the dislocation density in the fine-grained material is higher than that found in the coarse-grained samples which are given a sufficiently prolonged anneal to remove any residual substructure and, since the metal contains only a small amount of interstitual impurity, a variation in locking occurs. By contrast, application of both the grain size analysis and the Luders strain method to yield-stress data from commercially pure vanadium containing a large amount of interstitial impurity gives consistent values of oi and ky, with ky independent of grain size and temperature. Electron microscope observations show minor variations in dislocation density from grain size to grain size, but in any case in this material the dislocations are heavily locked with precipitate. On yielding new dislocations are generated and, as a consequence, the importance of any differences in dislocation density between the various specimens of different grain size is considerably reduced. It is perhaps significant that Adams and lannucci,16 working with a grade of tantalum containing a higher interstitial content than that used by Tedmon and Ferriss, prepared the specimens of different grain size by annealing in the temperature range 1500" to 2000° C to minimize any differences in dislocation structure, and found that ky had a value of 1.04 x 107 cgs units, independent of testing temperature. Such behavior is consistent with the dislocations being locked by carbide precipitates so that the generation of free dislocations is an athermal process. The recent work of Gilbert et al.17 also shows that in tantalum there is no significant variation of ky with grain size provided it contains 150 ppm of oxygen. In this case, however, the dislocations are not locked by precipitate and ky is temperature dependent. C. S. Tedmon and D. P. Ferriss (authors' reply)— We would like to thank Dr. Smallman for his interesting comments and discussion to our paper, "The Dependence of Yield Stress on Grain Size for Tantalum and a 10 pct W-90 pct Ta Alloy".18 It was suggested that perhaps the relatively small values obtained by us for ky of tantalum could be attributed to the same cause that accounts for the apparently small values of ky that result when it is determined by the Luders Strain technique. Since our values were obtained by plotting the lower yield stress vs the reciprocal of the square root of the grain size, it is not clear how this could be the case. The values of ky in this experiment have been calculated, using the Luders strain technique. With this method, values for ky on the order of 2 x 105 to 5 x lo6 cgs units were obtained. In spite of this rather large variation, the magnitudes are still small, and there appeared to be no good correlation between ky and the grain size or the yield stress, probably because of the difficulty in accurately extrapolating the work-hardening portion of the curve back to zero plastic strain. As was shown in the original data,18 there was little work hardening in any of the curves, at any temperature. In his discussion, Dr. Smallman also points out how ky has been observed to increase with increasing grain size, when determined by the Luders strain technique. There are at least two possible explanations for this. In the first case, if it is assumed that the bulk of the interstitial impurities are concentrated at the grain boundaries, then, of course, the available grain boundary area would decrease with increasing grain size, thus presenting less area for the interstitials, which would then presumably increase the concentration within the grains, thereby increasing the locking of the dislocations. In the second case, the increase in ky with increasing grain size would be attributed to the nature of the grain boundary itself. One of the several ways of deriving the Hall-Petch equation19 is based on the stress concentration arising from a pile-up of dislocations at the boundary. The ability of the stress concentration to unlock a source in a neighboring grain would depend on the strength of the grain boundary. As is well-known, the nature and struc-

Open pits and quarries are the major sources of all "hard rock" tonnage mined today. Normally, ore is fractured from the pit face by blasting and then truck-hauled to a primary crusher where pro- cessing begins; overburden (or waste) is generally truck-hauled from the pit to dump areas. Truck haulage of blasted ore and overburden accounts for some 25 to 50% of total mining costs in a typical open pit and commonly is the largest single cost factor. Obviously then, cost reduction efforts should properly focus on improving existing haulage systems and developing new breakthrough techniques for material transport. Continuous flow systems for large tonnages ordinarily will result in a lower cost than batch systems such as truck or rail haulage. Continuous flow with pipelines for liquids and slurries, or conveyors for medium to coarse dry materials (in the -8-in. range) are the economic answers for bulk materials handling over reasonable distances.

DIE steel with 1.47 pct C, 0.42 pct Mn, and 8.22 pct W contains Fe,C and WC in the annealed state and WC embedded in a martensitic matrix in the hardened state (quenched from 800°C). The presence of a large amount of undissolved angular WC carbide particles makes this steel extremely wear-resistant. However, the WC carbide begins to dissolve in the austenite when the heating temperature is raised above 1000°C, but this solution process is still not complete at 1250°C although partial melting has already taken place at the austenite grain boundaries. At 1325 C, this steel contains austenite and liquid metal but no WC carbide, Fig. 1. On quenching into brine, the liquid metal solidifies into a constituent which etches differently from the austenite-martensite matrix. This constituent appears lighter than the matrix at the 1250°C stage when etched with 2 pct nital but darker in Fig. 1 when etched with Murakami's reagent. Such a constituent has also been found in burnt tungsten high speed steels. This constituent has been isolated from the matrix by anodic dissolution in a 5 pct HC1 electrolyte and was found by the X-ray powder method to be iso-morphous with &manganese, Table I. The agreement in line intensity between these two phases indicates that there is no ordering in this new phase. The calculated cube edge of this phase is 6.395A, somewhat larger than that of ß-manganese (6.30A). Besides this phase, the anodic residue also contains free carbon from the matrix and amorphous WO,, although the X-ray powder pattern of the residue shows the presence of only this phase. This makes it impossible to determine directly the composition of this phase from the residue. Attempts to prepare an alloy containing only this phase have hitherto been fruitless. The following experiments serve to show that this phase can only be obtained by drastic quenching from the liquid state and that its tungsten and carbon contents must be lower than those in the Fe,W,C carbide. On air cooling from 1325oC, the liquid metal solidifies into a eutectic consisting of austenite and the Fe3W3C carbide. The nature of this dark-etching Fe3W3C has also been ascertained by X-rays. This eutectic becomes coarser on furnace cooling. The solidification of a specimen cooled for 5 min from 1325" to 1200°C and water quenched is still not complete and the fine eutectic is formed during the quenching. Since this new phase can be replaced by a eutectic of austenite and the Fe,W,C carbide, its composition must lie somewhere between the latter two phases. The special features of this phase are: 1—it can only form directly from the liquid state by drastic quenching and 2—it is a ternary phase of iron, tungsten, and carbon. The ß-manganese structure of this phase is also interesting. In the Periodic Table, iron and tungsten lie on opposite sides of manganese; a certain combination of these two elements, in the presence of carbon, may have average properties similar to those of manganese. It has already been established that the x phase, a ternary one of iron, chromium, and molybdenum, has the a-manganese structure."' A similar phase has also been found in the ternary system Fe-Cr-W and in the following binary systems: Re-Cb, Re-Ta, Re-Mo, and Re-W.6 References 1 G. D. Making maximum possible use of available equipment and material, CF&I placed a high-efficiency, high-capacity washery unit in the existing buildings to gain simplified operation, reduced manpower requirements, raised efficiency, and boosted production. THE central washing plant of the Colorado Fuel & Iron Corp. was first operated in 1918 to furnish coal for two 60-oven batteries of Koppers design. Prior to that time the coke for the blast furnaces had been secured from a number of beehive operations, some with their own washeries. The original washery had four Elmore jigs, which did not do as well as had been expected. In 1923 the jigs were taken out and replaced by Deister Plat-O tables, with various changes in auxiliary equipment. In 1936 the throughput of the plant was considerably increased by the installation of vibrating filters for recovery and drying of fine coal, thereby reducing a large recirculating load of fine coal which passed through the screens of the Carpenter driers. In the late 1940's it became evident that something would have to be done to keep the washery abreast of progress at Pueblo and other washeries. Coal requirements were nearly two and one-half times the original requirements of the 120 small ovens, as additional ovens had been built in 1930, 1938, and 1945, whereas no additional coal washing capacity had been added since the 1936 modifications. Much of the equipment, moreover, had seen better days. One answer to the problem was to build a new and completely up-to-the-minute plant, with sep- arate sections for coarse, medium fine, fine, and very fine coal. On the other hand, it might be financially more profitable to place a high-efficiency, high-capacity unit in the existing buildings. The washing problem at Pueblo is not unique, but it is approached differently. There are no established specifications for coke ash and sulphur. The plant is operated on the principle that if it is more economical to wash it out than to slag it out, wash it out; otherwise, send it on to the blast furnaces. With coals at the Pueblo plant costing what they do, the benefits of washing at a low gravity are questionable. Hence the primary problem is to eliminate the high-ash components and retain all the low and medium-ash components. Sulphur is no problem at all, averaging 0.6 pct in the coke. Since a good proportion of the free impurity in the coals is as large as the coal or bone or larger, it appeared that it would be safe to go to jig washing and discontinue crushing the coal before washing, as had been the practice with the tables. This would boost the throughput. It might also decrease manpower requirements and washing costs considerably. It was assumed at the start and has been demonstrated in the first year of operation that a jig will do as well on the fines as the tables had been doing. It would not be necessary to discount any gains due to increased efficiency in washing the coarse material because of incapacity to wash the fines. By washing at —2+0 mesh it would be possible to dewater, by screening, a considerable tonnage satisfactorily, for example, at —2 + % or —2 + l/4, and then crush it in a hammer mill. Current modern trends in mining show that hoisting shafts are being expected to fulfill an important ventilation function. However, where rigid guides and supporting structures are mandatory, ventilating power costs will be high, unless the transverse structures (shaft sets) are streamlined. In the complex configurations of hoisting shaft furniture patterns, either for original design purposes, or for the adjustment of an existing shaft, a useful degree of aerodynamic optimization, by reduction of overall resistance, can only be effectively evaluated by model studies in a special purpose wind tunnel, as described herein. The author has shown that, in one particular case, an annual power cost saving of more than $50,000 was indicated, mainly by the selection of buntons and dividers of improved aerodynamic profile. Mining companies are now realizing the advantages that can accrue through proper attention to the aerodynamic aspects of mine shaft design. With progressive demands of civilization for an ever greater supply of coal and metals, and with greater depths of working, higher rates of extraction, advanced degrees of mechanization, and improved standards of environmental health and work comfort, shaft design is becoming an extremely important aspect of mining operations. In addition, because the cost of sinking, equipping, maintaining, and operating a mine shaft is continually increasing, there is a greater incentive to use a shaft for the maximum duty, consistent with economy. The current natural tendency is therefore to sink multi-purpose shafts, to install as much equipment as is safely and effectively possible to operate; and then, over and above all these functions, to use the shaft to its maximum possible ventilating capacity, as a major, or auxiliary, airway. Clearly, this latter additional function can only be employed at a significant cost, since the most economic operating airways are smooth-lined and devoid of internal rigid furniture. It is true that hoisting functions can be carried out in such shafts if rope guides are used, but only under restricted conditions. Where a manway must be provided, fixed guides and supporting structures are mandatory, and ventilation costs become accentuated. It is generally recognized that the prime element of cost in ventilating a mine can be represented by the power required to drive the fan unit. It is also known that the largest component of total mine resistance is that of the downcast shaft, where this shaft is equipped with rigid guides for hoisting purposes. The pressure loss varies directly as the resistance of the shaft, in accordance with a modification of the Atkinson equation p = RQ2/3600. Furthermore, the air horsepower drawn is given by the equation AHP = (p x 0/33000. Therefore, the power required to drive the fan unit varies as the resistance of the shaft and the cube of the air quantity. Clearly, if Q is a specified minimum, then the only way to minimize the pressure loss (and the power costs) is to reduce the shaft resistance R. (See Table I for a list of symbols.) The resistance to airflow of a shaft equipped with rigid guides and supporting structural sets consists of two components which, for the sake of analytical simplicity, can be regarded as additive. 1) Frictional resistance, represented by the viscous frictional forces within the boundary layer, as air flows along the surfaces of the walls and the periphery of the vertical elements (guides, pipes, cables, ropes, etc.) of the furniture. The friction loss can be readily calculated by the Atkinson equation, after selection of a suitable value for the friction factor K from the McElroy compilation.' KxLxO xQ2 5.2 xA3 Friction loss can be minimized by lining the shaft walls (particularly if of circular or elliptical cross-section) with a smooth continuous lining of monolithic concrete.

INTRODUCTION Created in 1944 to help rebuild those economies, principally in Europe, which were seriously damaged or destroyed during the Second World War, the World Bank--or to use its correct name, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development-began its operational phase by making a loan to the Government of France to accomplish two tasks: (i) to import coal for space heating purposes; and (ii) to buy new machinery and equipment to help rehabilitate its coal mines. Once the thrust of reconstruction in postwar Europe was largely accomplished, the World Bank Group (for today the World Bank has three separate lending windows) turned to mobilizing funds to improve living standards in developing countries, which remains its primary goal today. Over this period of time, the World Bank Group has continued to assist the world mining industry in various ways and, since 1955 the World Bank Group has financed mining or mineral processing projects with loans/credits totalling $1.5 billion. The World Bank Group consists of two institutions--the World Bank itself and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), which was founded as a separate institution in 1956 and three separate lending windows--the World Bank, the International Development Association (IDA), and IFC. The World Bank loans are provided at commercially-related interest rates but have grace periods usually of up to 3 to 5 years and repayment periods ranging from around 15 to 20 years. Since the World Bank raises its operating funds on the international capital markets in varying currencies and in varying interest rates, it relends a basket of currencies at floating interest rates which are fixed every six months to reflect the Bank's own borrowing cost. At the present time, the interest rate is just below 10% per year and in addition, a one-time front-end fee of 1/4 of 1% is charged. Also, a commitment fee of 3/4% per year is charged on the undisbursed amount of the loan itself. For loans to industrial and mining projects, it is normal to charge an additional guarantee fee of 1 to 1.5% in addition to the annual interest rate. This guarantee fee is payable to the government of the country in which the project is carried out since, by its charter, the World Bank is required to have the guarantee of the host government for each loan made in a specific country. By far the greatest source of lending funds within the World Bank Group is that of the World Bank itself and for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1984, the World Bank approved loans totalling $12 billion. The second lending window within the World Bank Group is IDA which performs the same functions as the Bank itself and has the same staff. Nevertheless, its loans (called credits) are made on much softer terms and are made to the poorest nations only. IDA funds are subscribed by the wealthier countries, usually as grants, and these are relent as credits to those countries with the lowest per capita income. IDA credits are made for 50 year periods, including 10 years of grace, to the government itself. The credits are interest free, but there is a service charge of 3/4% per year on the amount withdrawn and outstanding to defray the administrative costs of IDA. Credits approved during fiscal 1984 totalled $3.5 billion. The third lending window is IFC. While IFC is a separate corporation and operates quite separately from the World Bank and has its own staff and regulations, it works very closely with the World Bank on its overall approach to the mining sector and to a particular country. IFC's mission is essentially to supply venture capital and to stimulate development of the local private sector in capital markets as well as to promote the international flow of private capital to developing countries. THE existence of large saline deposits in that flat arid basin, known as the Great Salt Lake Desert, has long been recognized, but the extent and great commercial value of these deposits has not been generally appreciated. That a very considerable interest has recently developed is indicated by the fact that about 263 prospecting permits-each covering about 2560 acres of land in this Desert-have been issued under the Potash Leasing Act (Act of 0ct. 2, 1917-40 Stat. 297), and patents granted on approximately 40,000 acres. It is reported that patents and leases have, or will be applied for on an additional 80,000 acres in the basin. , Tests have been made on probably less than 10 per cent. of the total area of the basin, but these have proved a practically unlimited supply of brine available -sufficient, probably, to. furnish the potassium and magnesium chloride requirements of this country for at least a hundred years.

Chemistry of uranium with respect to its hydrometallurgical recovery from carnotite ores was investigated and well defined during the radium boom period between 1900 and 1920. Since that time, methods used to extract uranium from its ores have remained basically either acid leaching or sodium carbonate leaching. Until about 1950, the only practical methods known for achieving a better than 75 pct U2O3 concentrate from the leach liquors involved fundamental chemical techniques for either purifying a solution prior to the uranium precipitation, or refining a crude uranium concentrate that was produced by neutralizing a pregnant mill liquor.

Molybdenite mineralization occurs in the hood zone of the Questa mine aplite-porphyry intrusive, one of the three sil ica-rich intrusive5 occurring along the east-west trending Red River Trench that crosses the northerly trending Sangre de Cristo Mountains in north-central New Mexico. The Trench is located immediately north of the circular Gold Hill positive block between the Red River and Cabresto Creek drainages. The aplite-porphyry bodies intruded a mid-Tertiary volcanic section consisting of lower andesites, overlain by latites and rhyolites. They occur largely in the andesites and were emplaced mainly by metasomatism rather than by sloping. Hydrothermal alteration occurs both as blanket propylitization in the volcanics and sericitization and kaolinization in the porphyries and as halo-type alteration outward from veins and shear zones resulting in strong biotization in the volcanics and sericitization and kaolinization in the aplitic rocks. Mineralization consists of: ( 1) molybdenite- quartz veinlets; (2) banded molybdenite, quartz veins frequently with biotite and potash feldspar along the walls and occasionally with minor lead, zinc, and copper sulfides and with fluorite and carbonates when again reopened; ( 3) high grade molybdenite locally along shear zones; and ( 4) molybdenite paint along joint and fracture surfaces. The mineralization was associated with faulting that resulted from numerous periods of gravity adjustment along the Trench and was controlled by the major shear systems that trend northeast, east-west and north-south to northwest. Molybdenite has been well oxidized in nearsurface exposures to ferrimolybdite and the molybdenum-bearing ferric hydroxide, akaganeite. The oxidation of the abundant pyrite within the veins and shear zones and of the alteration pyrite in the volcanics resulted in a low pH environment under which the acid molybdate ion released by oxidation was fixed either in the ferrimolybdite or the akaganeite molecule in the veins and shear zones or in the soils. Little has been lost in the runoff.
