Joseph Esrey Johnson, Jr., had already achieved rare distinction as an able metallurgist, clear thinker, brilliant author, and wise consulting engineer to bankers and operators; he had achieved the essentials of a great career when dcath cut short his activities on Apr. 4, 1919, in the forty-ninth year of his age. He belonged to a family of iron blast-furnace men and mine managers. His father, Major J. E. Johnson, after serving with distinction in the Army of the North, identified himself with the iron mines and blast furnace at Longdale, Va., with which he was connected during almost his entire business life. It is significant, that, during those troublous times of reconstruction in the South, he enjoyed always the affection and respect of his neighbors and associates alike. From him his son obtained not only a thorough training in blast-furnace practice and iron mining, but great personal courage and force of character. His mother, who survives both her husband and sons, possesses rare intellectuality, humor and a tenderness and human sympathy which those who were privileged to know well J. E. Johnson, Jr., recognized beneath his exterior of aggressiveness and will power. In a recently published analysis of the qualities which characterize the world's great men, three traits stand out preeminently; viz., independence, courage, and intellectuality. Each of these characteristics J. E. Johnson, Jr., possessed in extraordinary degree. His early education was obtained under a private tutor at Longdale, and this circumstance probably enhanced a natural tendency to independence of character and individuality which, however, under the control of his unusual power of straight thinking and clear analysis never allowed him to go far astray. It has been said of him that if once he set his mind to a problem, however knotty, he scored a bull's-eye before the subject was dropped. His manner of attacking a subject involved first mastering the details of the available knowledge; then, putting this acquired information to one side, with an untrammeled mind blazing out a path of his own, so clear, so well-defined, and expressed in such simple terms that he illuminated the whole subject without distorting the original data or discussion. His two books, "Blast-furnace Construction in America" and "The Principles, Operation, and Products of the Blast Furnace, "on the iron blast furnace together form the most comprehensive, the most enlightening, and the most useful treatise on the subject ever produced in any language. But his ability did not end with the mastery and elucidation of principles enunciated by his predecessors; his own

A quarter of a century of service of steel rails on our oldest railroads, many of which have changed their standard sections three or four times, has furnished, and is furnishing, excellent opportunities to study their wear and behavior in the track. Such experience is valuable for the design of new sections, now required to meet the constantly increasing severity of railroad service. Before presenting the new sections for consideration, I will briefly call attention to some features of past experience. For convenience of study, rails may be separated according to their weight and height into four groups, viz.: 1. Hails weighing per yard from 52 to 60 pounds, and 34 to 4 inches high. 2. " " " " " 60 " 72 " " 46 to 44 " " 3. " " " " " 72 " 90 ' 41/8 to 5 4. " " " " " 85 or more " " over 5 " I Experience in this country is confined mainly to sections in groups Nos. 1, 2 and 3. • During the past few years I have had the opportunity to run my car over many thousands of miles of railway laid with the principal sections in use, and to obtain diagrams showing their deflections, permanent set, and, in a great measure, their manner of wear. The First Group.—The first steel rails imported, and those manufactured here, were light sections—included in the first group—and many of them, being rolled in rolls used for rolling iron sections, have pear-shaped heads, 2 3/8 to 2 1/2 inches wide, the base being heavy and from 1/4 to 1/2 inch narrower than the height. These rails were laid upon ties of solid timber, at least 8 inches face, spaced 2 feet from center to center. The moments of inertia of these rails were low, only ranging from 8 for the lightest sections to 12 for the heaviest. MANY studies have been made of the properties of steel produced by adding varying amounts of sponge iron to the charges used in steelmaking furnaces.1-3 The results of these previous studies, however, have failed to disclose a reason for the belief of steelmakers that steel made in this way is definitely different from steel made entirely from scrap or iron melting stock. This paper deals chiefly with the structure of the sponge iron, of the wrought iron made by welding the sponge iron into blooms, and of the steel made by melting the forged and rolled blooms. It is believed that the structure of the final steel is inherited from the ore and that this inherited structure produces marked differences in the properties of the steel and explains the feeling of steelmakers which is based on their experience. Three kinds of sponge iron were used in this investigation: One made from a limonite ore reduced with natural gas, one made from a hematite ore reduced with natural gas, and one made from a magnetite ore reduced with charcoal. In recent years, especially in the last decade, great interest has been shown and many advances have been made in the preparation and cleaning of coal. In the major coal-producing countries, the percentage of tonnage cleaned has been increasing ever since 1924. As separating media, both liquids and gases are used, these generally being water and air respectively. Some systems, instead of obtaining separation by the velocity of the medium in which the coal is cleaned, depend on the density of water mixed with sand, or coal dust and shale, or with chemicals such as calcium chloride. In studying the results of coal-cleaning equipment, it will be observed that the efficiency of the cleaning apparatus lowers as the size of the coal decreases. This inability to obtain any marked improvement in the fines has been partly responsible for the installation of dedusting equipment, to remove the fine sizes from the raw coal prior to cleaning. When considering the possibility of installing dedusting equipment, many factors must be taken into account. Very often, but not always, both the ash and sulfur content of the coal increase as the coal size decreases. When bituminous coal, containing soft powdery fusain, is subjected to a wet washing process, the porous fines of the fusain remain in the small coal or in the wash water and delay the dewatering of the washed coal and increase the difficulty of clarification in settling tanks or thickeners. When a dedusted coal is cleaned by a wet process, the sludge recovered from the settling tank often runs so high in ash that the sludge can be discarded without further treatment and still the loss is small. Where treatment of the sludge is desired, however, froth flotation may be used to advantage if the size of the feed is below 1/10 in. Dust from the deduster can be treated in a similar manner. Fusain, which is usually found in the fine sizes, has often a much larger ash content than other coal. Illustrative of this condition is a table of ash contents for the various petrographic constituents of Illinois coal (No. 5 bed) as given by Mitchell' (Table 1).

Injection of gas to increase oil recovery has been considered for almost all important discoveries during the past ten or fifteen years. However, the number of gas injection projects having sufficient history and data is too limited to permit valid generalities of effectiveness of gas injection. Management and engineers are faced with a difficult problem of selecting those reservoirs which are susceptible to profitable application of gas injection. Injection of gas to maintain high pressure favors some factors affecting reservoir performance such as viscosity, surface tension, and formation volume factor of oil by keeping gas in solution and favors some operating features such as extending flowing life of wells and storing part of the produced gas for future use or sales. Injection of gas at low pressure involves lower compression ratio, or at least a single gas-gathering system, larger displacement volume in the reservoir per unit of gas handled, and permits effective utilization of the naturally existing energy and agent for oil displacement that is gas dissolved in oil. Each program is thus a compromise to meet optimum economic conditions while striving to attain maximum recovery of this important nautral resource. The statement has often been made that pressure maintenance would greatly increase oil recovery by permitting abandonment of formation oil inflated with gas in solution rather than abandonment of the same liquid volume of tank oil, if the same terminal oil saturation could be attained. Simple calculations indicate increases in oil recov- ery as high as one hundred per cent on this basis for high formation volume factor oil encountered in current deep drilling. A steadily growing body of evidence indicates that earthquake ground motions can cause failure of rock slopes that are otherwise stable under static loading conditions. As a result, the economic optimum working slope angle is reduced when earthquake shaking is considered in surface mine design, especially in regions of high seismicity. When designing surface mine slopes to withstand seismic motion it is as important to consider the probability of experiencing various levels of ground shaking as it is to consider the characteristics of the ground motion. For most slope designs, simple probabilistic techniques such as extreme value or maximum likelihood techniques are appropriate. These techniques, however, should be applied in such a way that a probability value is assigned to characteristic ground motion parameters at the mine rather than to nearby earthquake magnitudes. Several techniques have been developed to analyze rock slopes subjected to dynamic loads. Most of these techniques do not adequately account for the ground motion parameters of concern. The best technique appears to be one that utilizes actual earthquake time histories. A simple technique that calculates block displacement for any input accelerogram, using a linear acceleration approximation between time steps, has been developed that accurately accounts for rock block response. Results using this technique indicate that the following factors are important for assessing rock slope stability in earthquake regions:

The predominent method of coal mining in the United States for years has been room-and-pillar mining. The reason for this has been the advantages of room-and- pillar method which is a relatively flexible system and its capital investment. The room-and-pillar method permits some selectivity in mining, especially where gas wells, faults and possible coal quality may be a factor. The mobility of continuous and conventional mining equipment used to develop entries may also be used for retreat mining of rooms and pillars. Longwall mining of coal takes place along a long straight face, or wall, blocked out between two butt or panel entries. The long faces or walls are normally projected in lengths of 61 to 183 m (200 to 600 ft) in this country. The longwall method of mining had its beginning in the United States during the 1800's. During that period, pack wall and wood posts were used for roof support. The longwall face was mined by miners using picks to undercut the coal. To keep the coal face from turning over, short wood posts called sprags were set in a slant position as the coal face was undercut to the depth of two to three feet. When the under-cutting cycle was completed, the sprags were removed to permit the coal to fall from the roof pressure. The longwall mining of coal did not take a firm hold during the 18009s, and room-and-pillar prevailed. In the early 19009s, steel jacks were introduced, and along with it, the modified caving theory. In March of 1950, a retreat longwall mining system, utilizing a plow, manually operated props, wood cribs and chock releases, was installed in one of Eastern Associated Coal Corp.'s mines.

To allow recovery of gold values from ore which cannot be economically processed by the mill, Pinson Mining Company has developed a run-of-mine heap leaching facility. In order to estimate production scale recovery rates, reagent consumption and percolation problems, a series of pilot scale tests were performed. These tests typically consisted of 3,630 metric tons (mt) (4,000 tons) leach ore at a grade of .94 to 1.56 grams Au per metric ton (g/mt) (.03 to .05 oz. Au/ton). Test heaps were loader stacked to approximately 4.3 meters (14 feet) high. Information from these pilot scale tests was employed in the design and construction of the production scale facility. Parameters such as spray rate, leach cycle, sprinkler placement, and barren solution chemistry were determined by the pilot tests.

Oxidized cobalt powder is known to have a magnetic hysteresis loop which is asymmetric with respect to the magnetization axis. The experiment described herein shows that the orientation relationship between the basal plane of hexagonal cobalt and the oxide which forms upon it at 400°C is {111}ux//{100.1 }co <110>ux//<11.O> This orientation relationship allows a magnetic interaction between the antiferromagnetic oxide and the ferromagnetic substrate which could account for the offset hysteresis loop. Oxidized nickel powder has a symmetrical hysteresis loop and so is apparently not influenced by any magnetic interaction between metal and oxide. The orientation of the oxide (cubic) was found to be identical with that of the nickel substrate when the oxide forms on a polished surface parallel with {111} Ni. IN 1956 W. H. Meiklejohn and C. P. Bean discovered that fine particles of cobalt which had been prepared in a certain way have a magnetic hysteresis loop which in a strong field is asymmetric relative to the magnetization axis.&apos; The cobalt powder exhibited this unusual magnetic property only after it had been oxidized in air or oxygen; it lost the shifted hysteresis loop when the oxide was reduced in hydrogen. X-ray and neutron diffraction&apos; experiments showed the presence of cobaltous oxide (COO) and hexagonal cobalt in samples exhibiting the biased hysteresis loop and specifically showed no indication of any other compound with the exception of mercuric oxide.* The magnetic hysteresis loop becomes symmetrical above the Nee1 temperature (paramagnetic state) of COO. Therefore, it was concluded that the anomalous magnetic behavior is associated with the influence of cobaltous oxide upon the metallic cobalt. It has been proposed that crystallographic coherency may exist between the cobalt and a plane of some antiferromagnetic material which has unbalanced spin distribution and sufficient magnetic anisotropy to hold its spin in the direction which existed when the specimen was cooled. COO has these properties. Therefore, Roth&apos; has suggested that cobaltous oxide may form with a {111} plane parallel and coherent with the basal plane of the hexagonal cobalt metal and proposed that, as consequence of the antiferromagnetic interaction between COO and the underlying cobalt, the magnetization direction in oxidized fine Co particles may be ro-lated from the easy c-direction.2 Such a relationship, he proposed, would explain the observed magnetic effect in oxidized cobalt powder. The main purpose of this study was to determine the orientation relationship, if any, between the basal plane of cobalt and the oxide which forms upon it. Attempts to produce a film of COO which was strong enough to be handled were not successful. However we did succeed in making a film of CoCo2O, which was strong enough to be removed from the cobalt substrate and mounted on an electron-microscope grid. Because of the close structural similarity of COO and CoCo2O, we believe the orientation relation found for CoCo2O, on cobalt probably also holds for COO on cobalt. The epitaxial relationship of NiO and Ni also was investigated. To date no shifted hysteresis loop has been observed with nickel powder. However, the similarity of atomic array in cobalt and nickel leads to the prediction that a {111} of NiO may be parallel with a (111} of nickel. Experimental Method Cobalt-Cobalt Oxide—A coarse-grained specimen of a (hexagonal) cobalt was prepared by allowing a large crystal of fee cobalt to transform slowly at 400°C. The crystal was then cut to expose a surface parallel with the basal plane. A back reflection Laue X-ray photograph showed that the 00.1 plane was within 2" of the cut surface. The surface was mechanically polished and then electro polished in 85 pet orthophosphoric acid after which the crystal was held for 30 min at 400°C in air. During this heat-treatment the surface darkened slightly due to the oxide film which formed. The film was not thick enough to give an X-ray diffraction pattern, even by a glancing-angle technique. Glancing-angle electron diffraction was not possible either, owing to the interference of the electron beam with the high magnetic fields which exist at the 00.1 surface of the cobalt. However, it was possible to make an electron-diffraction photograph of the oxide film by stripping it from the cobalt substrate using the method described later. By maintaining reference marks carefully, it was possible to preserve the orientation relationship between the stripped film and the substrate on which it was formed. The oxidized surface of the crystal was first covered with a 1 pet solution of collodion (cellulose nitrate) in amyl acetate. When the film was dry, small rectangles were scored on the surface with a needle point. The specimen was then repolished

The in situ deformability of rock masses is determined by relating the applied load to the radial displacements of points on the borehole wall that are outside of the loaded surfaces. The external displacement method includes the steps in which: a) radial displacement sensors are installed to measure the change in length of a diameter of a borehole; b) unidirectional self- equilibrating pair of forces perpendicular to the direction of radial displacement measurements are applied on opposite sectors of the borehole wall, and; c) using elastic theory, the in-situ deformability of the rock mass can be related with the applied loads and measured radial displacements. The displacements outside the loaded surfaces are comparatively smaller in magnitude than displacements inside the loaded surfaces. These displacements, however, are sufficiently large and can be measured precisely by commercially available linear displacement sensors. Loads are applied by a conventional borehole jack. Existing methods for measuring the in situ deformability of rock masses yields unreliable results due to complex boundary stresses, small and varying contact areas, and the existence of fractures. It was shown that in the external displacement method, the effect of boundary pressure distribution and contact area are negligible. Also, since the displacements measured in the external displacement method were due to materials that are deeper inside the rock mass, borehole fractures have less influence on the calculated deformation modulus.

This chapter presents a survey of instrumentation and control systems used on ball mill circuits from the past to the present. It is based on the concept of optimization of plant practice, and addresses the influence of the circuit design on the control strategy and on the instrumentation philosophy. Methods of optimization of the grinding circuit, within the constraints of the mill design requirements, are reviewed. The modern use of automation and circuit optimization is critically reviewed for known and possible conceptual control loops. A comparative study of circuit variations due to instrument hardware, location and installation is provided. Future trends i.e., computer control (DDC) and the effects on both the control stratagems and the optimization stratagems are described.

The fundamental problem in the thermodynamics of solid solutions is the determinatiorl or calculation of the activities of the components as a function of temperature and composition. Since the theory of metals is not suficiently developed to allow a priori calculation of these quantities, they must be obtained from experiment. C. Wagner1 has reviewed the literature of this subject for the period before 1940. Although several important and extensive studies have been made in the meantime, the number of systems to which any sort of quantitative information can be assigned is vanish-ingly small. These data have become of great potential importance in studies of the structure of solid solutions2 and intermetallic compounds, the nature of the diffusion process,3,4 and perhaps even the mechanism of mechanical deformation.5 For these reasons, it. seems very worthwhile to extend the experimental data in this field. Although there is little use in duplicating Wagner&apos;s review, attention should be directed to the most recently reported investigations. A brief enumeration of the methods of measurement previously employed also should be valuable. The most direct method is the determination of the partial pressure of the components in the vapor phase in equilibrium with the solution. Both equilibrium and kinetic methods have been tried in metal systems, but almost exclusively on liquid phases. Only in the ease of carbon in iron alloys and in the copper-zinc system have extensive measure- ments been made which include solid phases. When one of the components is an element, such as nitrogen or carbon, which forms compounds which are very volatile and stable at normal temperatures and pressures (CH4, Co2, CO NH3), it is frequently possible to equilibrate mixtures containing these (such as CH4-H2, CO2-CO, NH3-H2) independently with the elernents (C, X) and with the metal (Fe, Ni, etc.). Such measurernents have been made for carbon in iron, iron-silicon, and iron-manganese alloys by Smith6 and in iron and iron-nickel alloys by Toensing.7 Differences between carbon activity values at the same temperature and carbon content when carboil is introduced from CH4-H2 rnixtures or CO-CO. mixtures indicate that the effects of hydrogen and oxygen in the system are not negligible, and one can only hope that the true value lies somewhere between these sets of results, probably nearer the CH4-H2 data since hydrogen is less soluble in iron than oxygen. This is essentially an equilibrium method, although flowing gas is employed. A kirletic method has been employed which consists of sweeping an inert gas (generally hydrogen) over the alloy at a series of rates, condensing the metal vapor out,, and analyzing it. The metal content can be extrapolated to zero flow rate (equilibrium). Wejnarth&apos;s8 work on Cd-Mg and Zn-Mg is a good example of this frequently used method. A variant of this consists of equilibrating a known volume of inert gas with the alloy, sweeping it out quickly, and analyzing for metal. In common with the above method, it has the disadvantage that the "inert" gas is generally somewhat soluble in the alloy. Moreover, the former continuously displaces the system from equilihrium and may give low values if solid diffusion is involved. The dew point method applied by Hargreaves9 to the alpha and beta brasses and by Schneider and Stolll0 to A1-Zn avoids the introduction of another component to the system, but is useful only in systems in which one component is much more volatile than the other. The alloy sealed in one end of an evacuated silica tube is heated to the desired temperature. The temperature of the other end is lowered until droplets of the volatile component condense. When the temperature is raised slightly, the droplets will evaporate. By careful adjustment of temperature, the range between evaporation and condensation can be narrowed appreciably. An independent determination of the vapor pressure of the . pure volatile component is necessary to give the partial pressure over the alloy. This is the method employed here to determine the vapor pressures of zinc and cadmium over their silver alloys up to 34 pct in cadmium and 76 pct in zinc. The former involves only the a solid solution, but the latter covers the a, ß, y, and e fields. In recent determinations, Herbenar, Siebert, and Duffenbarkl1 used the

Asbestos ranks among the leading minerals produced in Canada. It is also mined in Russia, Rhodesia, South Africa, Cyprus, Italy, the U.S.A., Japan, China and several other countries. The most abundant variety, chrysotile, and also the most valuable form of asbestos produced, makes up 90% of the world&apos;s supply. In Canada, chrysotile is found in the provinces of British Columbia, Ontario, Newfoundland as well as in Quebec, the latter accounting for almost 90% of all the fibre produced in this country. A number of developments emerging this year could make 1968 a record production and export year for Canada&apos;s asbestos mining industry. Asbestos fibre consumption in increasing in the U.S., Canada, up 10% to date this year, Japan and in Latin America. Demand in Western Europe is again on the upswing, following a cut-back last year. As a result, shipments from Canadian mines for the first eight months of this year reached some 916,968 tons versus 873,402 in 1967, an increase of 43,566 tons or 5%. Indications are that Canadian asbestos production will for the first time ever top 1.5 million tons in 1968.

The sorption of zinc in a-brass was investigated. By analyzing the elliPtically polarized light reflected from the surfaces of a-brass solid-vapor couples, their optical constants and surface compositions were determined. It was shown that the surface compositions approached an equilibrium value exponentially with time. The bulk diffusion coefficient, surface diffusion coefficient and condensation coefficient for a-brass solid-vapor couples were calculated near 350°C from the experimental results. It has been assumed during various diffusion experiments with bimetallic solid-vapor couples (Dunn,1 Seith and Kraus,2 Jenkins,3 Balluffi and Seigle,4 and others) that the surface composition of such couples reaches its equilibrium value immediately. Although this assumption is probably valid at elevated temperatures, it is certainly not expected to be confirmed at lower temperatures.* consequently, it was decided that a fundamental experiment, designed to solve this problem as well as to examine all aspects of bimetallic sorption, would be the investigation of the rate of approach to equilibrium of the surface composition of solid-vapor couples. The sorption (i.e., adsorption, absorption, and desorption) of metals is obviously dependent on the state of the metallic surface and substrate. Much recent theoretical8"9 and experimental10-12 work on condensation and evaporation of pure metals has shown that the surface contour in atomic dimensions is a critical factor in sorption, so that any deformation or contamination13,14 of the surface exerts a profound influence. It is also known that absorption or diffusion occurs much more rapidly along grain were and in other deformed regions. Thus an effective sorption experiment must utilize a strain-free and clean surface, or at least a clearly defined and reproducible surface state. A mechanically polished surface is in a highly deformed17-l9 state. Because the degree of this deformation is uncertain, it is clear that for most experimental purposes a strain-free (i.e., etched, chemically polished, or electropolished) surface is desirable. Although adsorbed gas molecules on metallic surfaces are unavoidable even in the highest vacuum,20 oxide films can in some cases be removed by suitable vacuum annealing. Electrolytically polished and annealed surfaces, being relatively without strain, smooth and free of bulk oxides, were considered adequate for the present sorption experiments. Measurement of the surface composition of a solid-vapor couple presents a unique problem. Since experiments to determine the approach to equilibrium of the surface composition must be performed at temperatures where diffusion is very slow, solute penetration is so small that conventional analytical methods are unsuitable. An optical reflectivity method utilizing a polarization spectroscope was employed because of the relatively small penetration (~200A) of visible light in metals. Prior to 1908 the oil production in the State of California had been almost entirely a heavy fuel oil, with a high flash point, but changed within a short period to a large percentage of refining oil with a low flash, by reason of the heavy production of light oil coming in from the Santa Maria field, the Midway field, and the increased production of the Fullerton field. This is clearly shown in the following tabulation of California&apos;s pro- The bringing in of these high percentages of light oil with their dangerous low flash and the increasing demand for the refined products necessitated the devising of some cheap and efficient means of quickly separating the lighter elements either in the field or at the main distributing points; also it became necessary to remove the excessive percentage of water which many of the light oils carried in emulsion. Port Harford Plant Probably the first important attempt to top light oil in California by other means than the ordinary stills was tried about 1908 by the Union Oil Co., at its plant at Port Harford, San Luis Obispo County, with Santa Maria oils. THE purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the lower part of the austenite transformation diagram, or TTT curves, where considerable uncertainty still exists as to the blending of the bainite and martensite reactions. The dissimilarities between these two low temperature trans- formations have been summarized recently by Troiano and Greninger.1 Of particular importance to the present work is the fact that martensite formation, unlike bainite formation, is not suppressed by the fastest quenching rates attainable. However, most of the investigations in this direction have been concerned primarily with the start of the martensite transformation [(M,)] during cooling, rather than with the quantitative aspects of the subsequent reaction on either further cooling or isothermal holding. Several years ago, Cohen2 suggested a form of transformation diagram which reconciled, at least schematically, the isothermal characteristics of the bainite transformation with the insuppressible nature of the martensite transfoi mation. In essence, the diagram consisted of a family of horizontal lines (representing the progress of the austenite-martensite reaction during quenching) which were interrupted in point of time by the bainite family of C-curves extending down from higher temperatures. This picture received later support by metallographic3 and dilatmetric4,5 studies, but the techniques employed were not sufficiently critical to substantiate some of the details. Elmendorf6 and Grange and Steward7 have shown that the Greninger-Troiano metallographic techniques may be used not only for [M,] determinations, but for studying the course of further austenite decomposition. In fact, the latter investigators have observed the amount of martensite formed as a function of temperature below [M,] in fourteen commercial steels. In the present paper, the Greninger- Troiano technique has been combined with the lineal method of Howard and Cohen9 to provide a unique, quantitative treatment of the austenite-martensite reaction. Furthermore, isothermal transformations have been similarly measured on holding at temperatures above and below M,, thus permitting a fairly detailed presentation of the lower part of the conventional austenite transformation diagram. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Materials The steels, listed in Table I, were selected for study because they exhibit a satisfactory range of M, temperatures and have not received as much attention as the lower carbon grades. These mines, which belong to the Burma Corporation, Ltd., formerly a London company now incorporated in Rangoon, Burma, are situated in the semi-independent state of Tawng-Peng, one of the small divisions comprising the northern Shan states and erroneously known as part of Upper Burma. Bawdwin is approximately 23&apos; 6&apos; N. latitude and 97" 20&apos; E. longitude, 450 miles north of Rangoon, 169 miles northcast of Mandalay and 50 miles south and west of the Province of Yunnan, China (see Fig. 1). Although the mines were worked by the Chinese during the Ming Dynasty, 1412 A. D., the most extensive operations took place between 1796 and 1851, when the mines contributed largely to the silver market of China. During the reign of Tung Chik, 1868 A. D., they were abandoned partly because of the Mohammedan rebellion in Yunnan, which made life and property insecure, but largely because of the difficulty of operating the mines on account of water and poor ventilation. Since that time practically nothing was done, although the Burmese kings are said to have made several sporadic attempts to work the mines, until 1891 when Europeans were attracted by the great slag dumps (assaying about 40 per cent. lead) which the Chinese had left after extracting the silver. After a railroad and smelter had been built and 200,000 to 300,000 tons of slag smelted for lead, exploration work was started and old workings cleaned out in order to locate the remnants of the orebody that it was supposed the Chinese had left. After two years of most discouraging work, the remains of a large orebody was discovered by the Dead Chinaman Tunnel or what is the 171-ft., or No. 2 level adit.
