The purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the lower part of the austenite transformation diagram, or TTT curves, where considerable uncertainty still exists as to the blending of the bainite and martensite reactions. The dissimilarities between these two low temperature transforrnations have been summarized recently by Troiano and Greninger.' Of particular importance to the present work is the fact that martensite formation, unlike bainite formation, is not suppressed by the fastest quenching rates attainable. However, most of the investigations in this direction have been concerned primarily with the start of the martensite transformation (Mg) during cooling, rather than with the quantitative aspects of the subsequent reaction on either further cooling or isothermal holding. Several years ago, Cohen2 suggested a form of transformation diagram which reconciled, at least schematically, the isothermal characteristics of the bainite transformation with the insuppressible nature of the martensite transformation. In essence, the diagram consisted of a family of horizontal lines (representing the progress of the austenite-martensite reaction during quenching) which were interrupted in point of time by the bainite family of C-curves extending down from higher temperatures. This picture received later support by metal-lographic3 and dilatometric4,5 studies, but the techniques employed were not sufficiently critical to substantiate some of the details. Elmendorf6 and Grange and Stewardi have shown that the Greninger-Troiano metallographic technique8 may be used not only for M, determinations, but for studying the course of further austenite decomposition. In fact, the latter investigators have observed the amount of martensite formed as a function of temperature below M, in fourteen commercial steels. In the present paper, the Greninger-Troiano technique has been combined with the lineal method of Howard and Cohen9 to provide a unique, quantitative treatment of the austenite-martensite reaction. Furthermore, isothermal transformations have been similarly measured on holding at temperatures above and below M., thus permitting a fairly detailed presentation of the lower part of the conventional austenite transformation diagram. Experimental Details Materials The steels, listed in Table I, were selected for study because they exhibit a satisfactory range of M. temperatures and have not received as much attention as the lower carbon grades. In decarburized mild steel, the strain hardening arising from 1/2 pct strain can he partly recovered by subsequent heating, even though re crystallization or grain growth does not occur. This recovery varies from 5 pct in an hour at room temperature to 70 pct at 800°C. The variation with temperature was qualitatively similar to that reported for copper, but occurred at lower temperatures. Except for the initial portion (Bazdschinger effect), the stress-strain curve following recovery can be superimposed on the original curve by shifting it to the left. In other words, the tensile behavior is essentially the same after straining and heating as if there had been less strain and no heating. The importance of this observation in understanding simultaneous deformation and recouery is explained. AN earlier investigation1 on copper showed that strengthening due to strain hardening was augmented by heating at moderate temperatures, but was diminished by heating at higher temperatures, Fig. 1. Auxiliary experiments1 indicated that recovery and strain aging are independent processes, which may proceed simultaneously, and whose effects are additive as indicated in Fig. 1. In order to study recovery by itself, similar tests were made on decarburized mild steel, where strain-aging effects are known2 to be absent. MATERIAL, TESTING PROCEDURE The specimens were made from rimmed, hot-rolled SAE 1020 steel 0.040 in. thick, by stamping out rectangular blanks and end holes, Fig. 2, and pack milling the reduced section. These were wet-hydrogen treated2 for 16 hr at 720°C to remove carbon and nitrogen completely and then heated 1 hr at 850°C in vacuum to stabilize the grain size. Auxiliary ex- periments showed that heating up to 800°C will not cause grain growth. They were prestrained 5 to 7.5 mils per in. using the special grips shown in Fig. 2. Such small strains are less than the "critical" strain for recrystallization and, therefore, will not cause recrystallization, even at high temperature. The recovery treatment after prestraining and before the retesting consisted of heating for 1 hr in wet hydrogen at the desired temperature. In one test, Huggenberger gages were used to define more accurately the loading and unloading curves. Fig. 3 illustrates the creep during the early stages of unloading, the hysteresis due to cold stretching, and removal of hysteresis by heating.3 RESULTS The load-deflection curves had ratner widely differing shapes for different specimens, both before and after the recovery treatment. Some specimens showed perfectly smooth curves, Fig. 4, while others exhibited an inflection more or less suggestive of a yield point (Fig. 4 shows all extreme case). Some curves were much steeper than others; Fig. 5 shows two extremes. Some additional ex-

Diffi-lsion measurements were conducted at all compositims in the bcc solid solution of the U-Nb system employing incremental couples at composition intemals of 10 at. pct. Diffusion coefficients were determined by the Matano method from concentration gradients obtained with the electron-probe microanalyzer. The activation energy for inter-diffi-lsion as a function of compositim shows three distinct regions: 1) 80 to 100 pct U.6= 30 kcal per mole; 2) 20 to 80 pct U, $ - 70 kcal per mole; 3) Oto 20 pet U, Q = i40 kcal per mole. The frequency factor, fi0 and the activation energy $ were found to be roughly related by the following equation: log Do ^9.7 X IO-5Q -6,6. The Kirkendall marker movement indicates that DU is larger than DNb between 16 and 100 pct U and DNb is larger than DU from 0 to 4 pct U. FOR practical as well as fundamental reasons, the rates of diffusion in alloys are of considerable consequence. Most solid-state reactions are largely dependent upon the diffusion of atoms through the lattice structure and along grain boundaries. The high-temperature strength and reasonable nuclear properties of niobium have prompted its use as a reactor material in contact with uranium fuel. Hence, diffusion data for the U-Nb system are of considerable importance. In the previous diffusion study1 on the U-Nb system using pure element couples, reliable data were obtained only in the range of 0 to 10 at. pct Nb due to the large variance of the diffusion coefficient with composition. Also, a large Kirkendall effect and considerable porosity in the uranium-rich areas of the specimen were reported, which suggests that the true diffusion coefficients are somewhat larger. The purpose of the present study was to obtain reliable diffusion coefficients at all compositions using incremental diffusion couples with intervals of 10 at. pct. In view of the abnormal self-diffusion be- havior of y uranium2-4 and some other bcc transition elements,&apos;-&apos; it was felt that a comparison of the interdiffusion coefficients in the bcc U-Nb system with those of Reynolds et al.9 for the fcc gold-nickel system might shed some light on the diffusion mechanism involved. Both systems have similar phase diagrams, in that complete solid solubility exists above a miscibility gap. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The uranium used in this investigation was obtained through the courtesy of Argonne National Laboratory. An analysis of this material detected only Si-30, A1-7, C-6, N < 10 and 0-18 ppm. The niobium was electron-beam melted material obtained from Stauffer-Temescal. The gaseous impurities were less than 50 ppm, and the spec troc hemical analysis showed Ta-500 and W-200 ppm. U-Nb alloys were prepared at composition intervals of 10 at. pct by melting the appropriate amounts of the pure elements in an arc furnace. The buttons were inverted and remelted 6 times to assure complete mixing. The buttons were then wrapped in molybdenum foil, canned in Zircaloy-2 or stainless steel, and hot rolled 30 pct reduction in thickness at temperatures between 850" and 1100°C. Alloys with 10, 20, 30, 40, and 90 at. pct Nb rolled quite easily under these conditions, but the 50, 60, 70, and 80 pct alloys remained brittle. After melting and rolling (when possible), the alloys were annealed for 24 hr at a temperature within 100°C of their melting point in a dynamic vacuum of better than 4 x 10-8 mm Hg. These treatments produced alloys which were homogeneous on a 1 p scale within the detectability limits of the electron probe. During fabrication, the alloys picked up as much as 100 ppm Mo and 100 ppm Zr. Other elements checked for but not found were Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Ti. The grain size of the annealed samples ranged from 3 mm for the uranium-rich alloys to 0.3 mm for the niobium-rich alloys. This permitted measurements of the concentration gradients in the diffusion samples without crossing more than one or two grains, thereby eliminating any grain boundary effects. Iodide zirconium was combined with calculated amounts of nitrided zirconium sponge and arc melted to prepare alloys in the 0 to 6 wt pct N region. Annealing treatments were carried out at 21 temperature levels. Metallographic examination of the heat-treated specimens permitted construction of the binary phase diagram from 0 to 6 pct N. Features of the diagram include the peritectic formation of both a and ß solid solutions. The maximum solubility of nitrogen is 0.8 pct in 8 zirconium and 4.8 pct in a zirconium. An X-ray study of nitrided materials was made in the range 6 to 13 wt pct N region because serious nitrogen losses were experienced when attempts were made to arc melt these high nitrogen alloys. PHASE relationships in the Zr-N system have been determined. Due to the inability to retain nitrogen in nitrogen-rich alloys subjected to arc melting, definitive work was possible only in the range 0 to 6 wt pct (0 to 30 atomic pct) N. Sufficient complementary X-ray work was done to permit construction of the binary phase diagram up to 13.3 wt pct (50 atomic pct) N (ZrN). Small ingots were prepared by arc melting master alloys with enough zirconium to produce an alloy of the desired composition. Following pretreatment, alloys were annealed at temperature levels between 600" and 2020°C. Determination of the phase boundaries was then accomplished by metallographic evaluation of specimens quenched from the various temperatures. Incipient melting techniques were used to corroborate solidus curves, and X-ray diffraction was employed to study the nitrogen-rich region of the a + ZrN phase field. Materials Westinghouse Grade 1 iodide zirconium crystal bar served as the base material for this investigation. The as-received bars were lightly sandblasted, pickled in a 20 pct HN0-5 pct HF aqueous solution, rinsed in water and acetone, and dried. They were rolled to about 1/32 in. strip and acid-pickled, followed by water and then acetone rinses. The material was sheared to approximately 1/4 in. squares, cleaned with acetone, and stored for use. Pure zirconium nitride is not commercially available, according to correspondence with possible suppliers. A literature survey indicated that nitrogen may be introduced into zirconium metal by passing nitrogen or ammonia gas over zirconium at an elevated temperature. After considerable experimentation, a train was devised whereby high quality nitrogen was passed through a series of bubblers to remove the last traces of oxygen, through an H,SO, bubbler and a cold trap to remove moisture, and finally over zirconium within a resistance furnace. Hand-picked Bureau of Mines magnesium-reduced zirconium sponge proved more amenable to nitriding than the crystal bar. The nitrogen used was extra pure gas purchased from Linde Air Products Co. The first two bubblers through which the gas was passed contained a solution suggested by L. F. Fieser" as being ideal for removing the last traces of oxygen from nitrogen. The solution contains 20 g KOH, 2 g sodium-anthraquinone ,9-sulphonate, and 15 g NaHSO, dissolved in 100 ml water. It is blood-red and turns brown when contaminated with oxygen. A saturated lead acetate solution, next in the series of bubblers, removed any H2S which might have formed in the 0, removal stage. An H,SO, bubbler and cold trap removed moisture before the nitrogen was passed over the zirconium. The zirconium was contained in a stainless steel screen within a Vycor or quartz tube in a resistance furnace. Unreacted nitrogen passed out of the system through a mercury bubbler. A nitriding run was performed in the following manner: Zirconium was placed in the screen within the furnace tube. The unit was assembled, suitably clamped off, and evacuated to remove the air and moisture within the tube and that trapped by the zirconium sponge. The unit was flushed with nitrogen and evacuated twice. After nitrogen was allowed to pass over the zirconium for about 30 min, the furnace was turned on; several hours were required to reach temperature. The reaction was allowed to continue at temperature for about 4 hr and the screen was then withdrawn from the hot zone of the furnace by means of a Nichrome or Kanthal rod. The screen and its contents were allowed to cool at the end of the tube and were then removed. At 800°C no more than about 5 pct N could be introduced into the sponge zirconium. This material was designated M-1 (master alloy No. 1) and reserved for the preparation of alloys in the dilute nitrogen region. A second set of experiments was conducted at 1000°C; no more than 7.2 pct N could be introduced into the zirconium at this temperature. Enough material (M-2) of this nitrogen content was prepared to produce a second set of alloys to complement the first and to provide alloys in the 0 to 6 wt pct N range. It was hoped that a diffusion anneal plus a re-nitriding might yield a material of higher nitrogen content. The material containing about 7 pct N was therefore given a homogenization treatment at 1000°C for 6 hr under an argon atmosphere. It was

RECENT investigations1-4 have suggested that the total plastic strain, C, for high temperature creep under a given stress can be correlated by means of a temperature-compensated time, te- where t is the duration of test, e is the base of natural logarithms, aH is the activation energy for creep, R is the gas constant, and T is the absolute temperature. A typical set of data on which this deduction was based is given in Fig. la. Inasmuch as the e-in t curves for the various temperatures are identical except for their displacement along the In t axis where f and are appropriate functions. If the increase in creep rate with an increase in temperature is exclusively ascribable to a single process involv- ing thermal activation, (T) should equal RT and therefore it = constant [2] where ?= te Assuming the validity of this relationship, ? = ?2 at the same strain, or where the subscripts refer to two alternate test conditions.

For many years the permeability of reservoir sands has been measured by flowing air through a cleaned and dried core sample. This differs from the true reservoir permeability in one important respect: the rock particles in the reservoir are surrounded by interstitial water, not air, and their physical shape and condition of hydration are greatly dependent thereon. Permeability as defined must be measured with a single-phase fluid. Since no means exist for removing the oil and gas from a core sample by simply flowing water through it, the sample must be cleaned and then resatu-rated with water before testing. The present discussion attempts to show that after the cleaning process a considerably different permeability is determined with salt or fresh water than is obtained with air. The postulate is made that the salt-water permeability is probably closer to the true reservoir permeability than is the measurement with air. This is discussed in relation to both physically possible and economically feasible measuremerits. Data On more than 1200 core samples are given to show the nature of the effects observed, and a plea is made for others to consider water permeability measurements as a routine necessity, eventually replacing air permeability in regions where the differences are great. Introduction Permeability is defined1 as a "a measure of the capacity of a porous medium to transmit fluids, when there is no interaction between the solids and the fluid." Metallurgists are making use of the stereographic projection to a steadily increasing extent. In the last five years no less than 20 papers in American metallurgical journals alone have employed the stereographic projection; recent books on physical metallurgy, plastic deformation, X-rays and their applications, and crystal structure use it. Mineralogists have used the stereographic projection for many years in the description of symmetry classes and crystal planes, for it presents an accurate, easily understood plot of any angular relations in crystals with all unessential features eliminated (such as the accidentally determined size and shape of crystal faces). In metallography and physical metallurgy the projection is much used for the analysis of markings appearing on polished grains: slip lines, twins, cracks, structures formed by precipitation, magnetic-powder patterns, etch pits, etc. Data from certain types of X-ray photograms are most conveniently analyzed by its use, particularly those for determining the orientation of single crystals or the preferred orientation of grains in an aggregate. Calculations of how to tilt or cut a crystal parallel to a certain crystallographic plane or to reflect X-rays from a certain plane are rapidly carried out. It has been adopted almost universally to the exclusion of other methods by those studying the deformation of metallic crystals, save where the accuracy required is greater than a few tenths of a degree. Any directional property in a crystal or polycrystalline material can be shown on a stereographic projection; for example, the modulus of elasticity, yield point, etc. It has been repeatedly called to our attention that there is need of an elementary explanation of the principles and methods of stereographic projection, covering all the common applications in the field of metallography and physical metallurgy. The following contribution is an attempt to fill this need. The description of each method is supplemented with references to publications in which the method has been used. Activated carbon is a strong adsorbent for amyl xanthate, capable of removing from solution up to a quarter of its own weight in xanthate. In selective flotation system where depression is unstable, separation efficiency increases with activated carbon additions. The improvements observed are brought about by two mechanisms. First, by removing stripped and residual collector ions from solution, competition between depressant and xanthate is reduced and depression is stabilized. In addition, the texture of the froth phase at high pine oil concentrations is modified by activated carbon such that better drainage between the air bubbles takes place, alleviating the mechanical entrapment of depressed mineral particles. In treating a bulk copper/lead concentrate produced from GECO ore, selectively between galena and chalcopyrite is increased when activated carbon is used. Although the rate of flotation of galena is marginally lowered by activated carbon, a small extension in the duration of flotation allows the lead recovery to increase by 19% at the same recovery of copper. An addition rate of 0.75 kg/ton (1.5 lb/st) of bulk concentrate is suggested as optimum from this testwork. However, the actual level used in the mill is dependent upon the residual concentrations of collector and frother in the bulk concentrate pulp.

One of the deepest coal operations today is the Springhill No. 2 mine of Cumberland Railway & Coal Co., subsidiary of Dominion Coal Co. Ltd. Mining is now conducted at a slope distance of 14,000 ft, with 4400 vertical ft of cover. The record of Springhill No. 2 can be said to contain the history of bumps in the Province of Nova Scotia. The Springhill coal field forms part of the Cumberland field of Carboniferous age. There are seven mineable fields in the area, numbered in the order they were discovered. Mining has been carried on in all but the No. 4 and 5 seams, but present operations are confined to the No. 2. Fig. 1 shows a vertical section through the seams. Opened in 1873, No. 2 mine was first worked from parallel slopes driven from the outcrop of No. 2 seam down to the 7700 level. As the mine went deeper, a two-place auxiliary slope was driven from the 6900 level to the present workings. A transfer level at the 7800 connects the main haulage with the auxiliary haulage slope. The No. 2 mine plan is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The seam is bituminous, averaging 8.5 to 9 ft thick. There is a well defined parting 14 to 16 in. from the roof, and this roof coal is harder than the rest of the seam. Average pitch at the outcrop is 30°; at the 6500 level, 20°; at the 7900 level, 16°; and at the 13,800 level, 10°. Immediate roof and floor strata consist of beds of variable thicknesses of shales, grading to arenaceous shales to shaly sandstones to sandstones. A characteristic of the strata is the appearance and disappearance of sandstone bands, of considerable thickness, over distances of several hundred feet. MINE HISTORY Entrance to No. 2 mine is obtained by three parallel slopes, separated by 100-ft pillars except in the upper portion of the mine where the pillars are smaller. Main haulage levels were originally driven 600 ft apart for room and pillar extraction. A parallel drainage and intake airway was driven below each haulage level and a parallel return airway (counter level) above. Pillars 80 to 100 ft wide separated these two servicing entries from the center haulage level. Inclines up to 700 ft apart were driven off the levels up pitch to the upper levels, and at 40-ft centers level rooms 12 ft wide were driven off each side of the inclines, separated by crosscuts every 50 to 100 ft. The rooms were driven up to 350 ft or until they were holed into the room from the adjoining incline—a plan followed until the level reached its boundary. When the entire area between two levels had been divided into pillars, the pillars were extracted from the boundary back to the slope pillars. As depth of cover increased, mining conditions required larger pillars, and at the 3300 level, where NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS FOR MINING AT DEPTH In Room and Pillar Extraction: 1) Pillars must not be too small. 2) Pillar size must be uniform. 3) Extraction lines must be kept as straight and as uniform as possible. If they are irregular they should be brought back into line slowly. 4) Peninsulas of coal surrounded by gob must be avoided. 5) Pillars should not be disturbed after they have been formed. If it is necessary to increase the width of an opening, stripping or ribbing should be done gradually over a long distance. If increased width of openings is necessary at certain locations and can be anticipated, the openings should be widened during development. 6) Under no conditions should small pillars be left in the gob that would interfere with caving. In Long wall Operations: 1) Pillars formed during development for retreating longwalls should be uniform in size and shape. 2) Pillars should not be split after development, but if pillar splitting does become necessary it should not be carried out within the zone influenced by the working faces. 3) Width of levels should not be increased after the levels have been developed. If it does become necessary to widen a level it must be done gradually over a long distance by stripping or ribbing the coal ribs. 4) Extraction lines should remain uniform. If several walls are worked together—one behind the other—a uniform distance must be maintained between them and the wall faces must be kept as straight as possible. If the walls do get out of line, they must be brought back into line gradually to allow for a gradual change in the stress distribution over the area. 5) Stumps of coal, roof supports, etc. must not be allowed to remain in the gob to interfere with caving. 6) Midwalls should be built as rigidly as possible and properly maintained.

GRAIN boundary stress relaxation has been the subject of several investigations in recent years, but as yet the phenomenon is not well understood. One of the major difficulties has been the lack of a sufficient amount of data with which to evaluate any proposed mechanism. Little information is available on the effect of small amounts of substitutional solutes on grain boundary stress relaxation. It is with this important phase of the problem that this investigation is concerned. The influence of substitutional solutes on grain boundary stress relaxation has been recently investigated in copper by Pearson: and in aluminum by Dorn et al.&apos; Pearson studied the effect of zinc, gallium, germanium, and arsenic on the relaxation peak of OFHC copper.* The pure OFHC copper decreased the peak intensity and a second peak appeared at a higher temperature. This latter peak was termed the alloy grain boundary peak. At the lowest binary concentration studied, approximately 1 atomic pct, the primary peak was almost completely obliterated. Pearson found that the activation energy calculated from the alloy grain boundary peak for all solutes, irrespective of the concentration, was 44,000 cal per mol. Pearson concluded that the increase in activation energy from 33 to 44 kcal per mol is not continuous but abruptly changes from the lower to the higher value. As no attempt was made to investigate the intermediate range of concentration and hence calculate the possible variation of the activation energy for the initial grain boundary peak, this conclusion is hardly valid. In contrast to these results, Dorn et al. studied the effect of zinc, silver, copper, germanium, and magnesium on the grain boundary stress relaxation of aluminum. No change in the energy of activation was observed for binary alloys of the flrst four solutes, but a linear increase was found for increasing concentration of magnesium. Saturation was not found up to the maximum of 1.6 atomic pct. The energies of activation were obtained by plotting the horizontal displacement of the dynamic modulus curve vs temperature for two vibrational frequencies. As the modulus is proportional to the square of the frequency, this requires the measurement of the torsional frequency over a range of temperature. However, the technique does not lead to an unambiguous interpretation of the grain boundary

In my opinion, the concentration of minerals by flotation is the most interesting problem in ore-dressing, and will command eventually far more consideration than it has at present. For many ores it furnishes a complete method of concentration absolutely independent of specific gravity, and thus simplifies the milling of many difficult combinations. Not having to recognize the influence of specific gravity, we are also able to dispense with some of the complications resulting from classifying-conditions. Where flotation cannot be used for a complete separation of the minerals from the gangue, it will be found, in nearly all cases, to save those portions which are generally lost by reason of their fine state of division. For this reason, it should be looked upon mainly as an aid to general concentration, although there are many ores so well adapted to flotation that more than 90 per cent. of the valuable metals can be recovered from them in one operation by this process. In presenting the results of my investigations in flotation, I have endeavored to theorize as little as possible. That side of the subject has been extensively discussed by others. My earliest work with flotation was done in 1895, when I used various oils, grease, soap, etc., with results that were remarkable. I did not realize then that with water alone equally good separations could be made. Up to 1906, my endeavors were confined to attempts to keep the concentrates on the tables well wetted and away from exposure to the air. The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the unit operation of grinding and the circulating load, of the unit operation of classification and the circulating load, and of the two superimposed into one operation to clarify the overall trend of events relating the circulating load to the capacity of the closed circuit grinding system, to the specific surface area of the final fine product, and to the energy consumption in the closed circuit grinding process. The capacity of the closed circuit is frequently, if not always, determined by the classifier, not by the mill." With these words a startling idea was expressed in 1934 by Dorr and Anable.1 Today, some 30 years later, grinding in closed circuit is universally accepted. The basic curve presenting the capacity factor versus circulating load by Dorr and Anable has obviously been so convincing that not a single authoritative investigation regarding its validity seems to have been conducted. The only major subject of discussion appears to have been the relative merits of the &apos;high&apos; and &apos;low&apos; circulating loads. It seems to be universally agreed that much still remains to be hoped for regarding sharpness of classification. BASIC CURVES FOR CONSTANT MILL LOADING Fig. 1 presents a series of basic curves for constant mill loadings in function of new feed rate and circulating load. The mill loading indicated by each curve is the sum of hourly tonnages of new feed and circulating load. For example, at point 0 where the new feed rate is 100 t/h and the circulating load 300%, or 300 t/h, the mill loading is 400 t/h. In closed circuit grinding, the new feed rate corresponds to the rate of finished classified material produced. Although at this stage the effect of classification is excluded in construction of the basic curves, the trend indicated by these curves is strongly in favor of closed circuit operation under relatively small circulating loads. A study of the curves reveals that, e.g., a mill operating under a load of 200 t/h at point P where the new feed rate is 50 t/h and the circulating load 300% will also operate under the same total load at point Q where the new feed rate is 100 t/h and the circulating load 100%. In other words, a reduction of circulating load from 300% to 100% would lead to doubling of the new feed rate and doubling of the rate of production of finished material, without a change in the total mill loading. The obvious question is, is it also possible by a reduction of the circulating load in a closed industrial grinding circuit to increase the production of finished classified material and, if so, how and to what extent? GRINDING TESTS BY DORR AND ANABLE In a series of open circuit grinding tests reported by Dorr and Anable1 limestone was ground at various feed rates in a 3-ft ball mill. The original data are reproduced in Table I. It can be seen that with the increased feed rate production of -65-mesh material increased and the energy consumption per unit weight of the -65-mesh product decreased in the reverse ratio. THE diffusion of metal atoms into the crystal lattice of another metal and the assumption of regular positions to form a homogeneous alloy are some of the most fundamental phenomena of structural metallurgy. The mechanism of this process has been the subject of a great deal of study from many viewpoints, but the picture is still far from complete. It is generally believed that if one metal is to diffuse into another, the first must have some solubility in the second1. This means that the solvent must be able to accommodate the stranger atoms, either on points of its own lattice or in the interstices between, without losing its own crystal-lographic identity. It is also a general observation that cold-working is a distinct aid in the diffusion process, causing it to take place with greater rapidity at the same temperature or with the same speed at a lower temperature. There is considerable doubt, however, as to the real significance of the deformation in its effect on the diffusion mechanism. Several factors associated with the cold-working may be responsible for the increased diffusion rate. The plastic deformation causes a distor-tion of the solvent lattice, which may be an aid in the assimulation of atoms of another kind. There are many references2 in the literature that suggest that some distortion or "loosening" of the lattice is necessary for atomic migration and that diffusion cannot take place in the undis-

The necessity of using a refractory material capable of much greater resistance to chemical action and having a far higher melting-point than those which contain silica, which melt and sweat off in the furnace even when not exposed to bases forming with silica more or less fusible compounds, has led to a careful practical study of all those materials which contain very refractory bases. The results of these researches, extending over several years, and made on a very large scale in many of the largest works in Europe, are of the highest interest, not only considered as a step in the progress of the study of the materials themselves, but in the application of refractory materials to metallurgical uses in general. The result of the experience of the last seven years with these basic materials, as in general with all such substanccs, is that natural products cannot be used as such. They are either too uncertain in their quality, contain substances which may in certain cases be very injurious, or, when in a condition in which they might be used, are so rare as to become practically unavailable for employment on a large scale. The materials that may he used are therefore not only limited in number. but they must be prepared artificially. When the use of basic artificial material is further extended, no doubt the number of these substances will not only be greatly increased, but the methods of preparation will be both perfected and cheapened to such an extent as to permit their application in processes for which they have hitherto proved too expensive. The quantity of refractory materials required for making ingots will he from 130 to 150 Ibs. per ton, or between 6 and 8 per cent. of the metal produced. In an establishment producing 2000 to 3000 tons of steel per week, considerable space is required to handle the basic materials properly. It is proposed in this paper to briefly discuss these basic materials and their application in the only two metallurgical processes where they have as yet been applied. These are the basic Bessemer and the basic open-hearth process, known as the Thomas-Gilchrist processes.

SOME observations relative to the U-Zn system have been made by other investigators. Chipman1 and Carter2 have reported the preparation of several U-Zn alloys and point out that these alloys are generally difficult to prepare. Chipman1 reported evidence for a high melting compound at about 90 atomic pct Zn and the possible existence of a eutec-tic between the compound and uranium. Raynor," in a theoretical discussion of the alloying properties of uranium, included zinc among the elements predicted to have little or no solubility in a, p, or y uranium. In the present investigation, thermal analyses, X-ray, metallographic, and vapor-pressure data were obtained to determine the phase boundaries. The relatively high zinc pressure over most of the alloys at temperatures of 900 °C and above proved troublesome and special techniques had to be employed in preparing suitable alloys. Materials and Preparation of Alloys The metals employed in this investigation were Ames Laboratory biscuit uranium containing less than 500 ppm total impurities and Bunker Hill slab zinc or Baker Analyzed reagent granulated zinc, both with a purity of 99.99+ pct. Due to the high vapor pressure of zinc and the high reactivity of both uranium and zinc with oxygen at only moderately high temperatures, alloys were prepared in closed containers which had either been evacuated or evacuated and filled with helium. High purity magnesia, magnesia containing 10 pct calcium fluoride, and tantalum proved to be suitable crucible materials. Tw-o different procedures, described below, were used to prepare alloys, the latter being the most satisfactory. The metals, uranium turnings and granulated zinc, were cleaned with dilute nitric acid, rinsed, dried, and placed immediately in a helium-fill&apos;ed dry box. The two metals were placed&apos; in a 10 mil Ta crucible. The charge was enclosed in the tantalum crucible by welding on a preformed tantalum cap. This assembly was enclosed inside a stainless steel (AISI 309) bomb. The bomb was made by welding a piece of stainless steel plate on each end of a stainless steel pipe. All these operations were carried out in a helium atmosphere. These assemblies were heated in a muffle furnace at temperatures between 1100" and 1200°C for 10 to 15 min or held as long as 15 to 20 hr in the 950" to 1000°C temperature range before quenching. Spectrographic and chemical analyses showed no tantalum pickup by the alloys, indicating no reaction between the alloys and the crucibles. However, some of these crucibles failed, probably due to imperfections in the welds of the stainless steel or tantalum crucibles. The second and most satisfactory method was to prepare the alloys by powder metallurgy techniques. The procedure was to press degreased and acid-etched uranium turnings with granulated zinc into 20 g compacts under 20,000-psi pressure. The compacts were placed in MgO crucibles, and sealed in evacuated Vycor or fused silica tubes. The alloys were then heated as long as two weeks at about 550°C in a muffle furnace. The pressed compacts were observed to expand by several volume percent during heating and it was necessary to make allowances for this expansion in order to avoid breaking the crucible and Vycor tube. This method was found very satisfactory for preparing alloys which were suitable for thermal analysis or vapor pressure studies. Experimental Methods and Results The phase diagram for the U-Zn system at 1 atrn pressure, shown in Fig. 1, is based primarily on vapor pressure measurements and on thermal analysis taken at temperatures below 950°C. Fig. 2 shows the U-Zn diagram at 5 atrn pressure, constructed on the basis of thermal analysis of alloys in sealed containers up to 1150°C and on the basis of metallographic, X-ray, and analytical data. The alloys sealed under vacuum were actually under their own vapor pressure and those sealed in an atmosphere of helium were under an additional pressure due to the helium. At temperatures up to 1100°C the zinc pressure is 5 atrn or less for these alloys; consequently the maximum pressure over the alloys sealed under a helium atmosphere was 10 atrn or less at temperatures up to 1100°C. Changes in pressure of this order of magnitude do not appreciably alter the position of most solid-solid or liquid-solid phase boundaries. In constructing the phase diagram for a pressure of 5 atm, the effect of pressure on all phase boundaries except those for liquid-vapor or solid-vapor regions was considered negligible.

Quite properly it has been a tradition of engineering education that facts and not fancies must be adhered to. Without a doubt, those men who formed the mold of our engineering philosophy as much as it is possible for such molds to be established-rightly held the highest standards of intellectual honesty. Fortunately, it was unthinkable to them to temporize with untried theories and naturally the men whom they trained as engineering educators carry this philosophy in turn to their students, thus handing down the tradition of stability.

Heat and gas flow interactions in nonisothermal packed beds were examined in the paper. A study was made of the response of the system to a step or pulse change in the inlet gas temperature, with a fixed value of the overall pressure drop across the bed. Under these conditions the heat flow and fluid flow transients are coupled because the convective heat transfer rate is alfected by the mass flow rate of the gas which, in turn, for a fixed pressure drop will depend on the temperature profile in the system. The Problem was stated in terms of differential equations, which were integrated numerically. The parameters used in the computation were so chosen to reflect the operation of the stack region of blast furnaces and sinterbeds. The computed results showed that the pressure drop-flou1 relationships and the rate of progress of the temperature fronts (waves) were strongly interrelated and were also markedly affected by variations in particle size and in void fraction. MANY metallurgical processes involve the contact of solid particles with a gas stream in a packed bed arrangement under nonisothermal conditions. Examples are shaft furnaces, regenerators, pebble heaters, and the sinter process. Although the heat and mass transfer aspects of packed bed processing have been extensively studied, the associated flow phenomena and in particular the effects of nonisothermality on the flow, have received little attention to date. :In fact, most of the previous workers considered the flow rate of the carrier gas time invariant and independent of the heat or mass transfer processSzekely and carr2 have shown that the pressure drop-flow relationships in nonisothermal packed beds may be strongly affected by the temperature profile within the system. These authors have devised a method for relating the pressure drop to flow for a given temperature profile. thus providing an extension of the Ergun equation to steady nonisothermal systems. Finally, in a recent paper willmot3 examined the response of regenerators to externally imposed changes in the gas flow rate. Both these investigations were somewhat specialized since, in general, neither the temperature distribution nor the gas flow rate may be regarded as truly independent variables, thus the heat transfer and the fluid flow problems have to be solved simultaneously. The work reported here is divided into two parts: in Part 1 the general formulation is given and a detailed discussion is presented of fixed bed systems. Part is devoted to systems in which a gas and particulate solids are contacted in a counter flow arrangement. FORMULATION Consider a nonisothermal fixed packed bed, extending from through which a gas is flowing. The problem is to develop a relationship between pressure drop and gas flow (with the gas flow being the dependent variable) and to evaluate the rate at which a change in the gas temperature, imposed at the inlet, travels through the system. Let us consider an infinitesimal section of the bed and establish differential heat, mass, and mechanical energy balances over this region. In addition, relationships are needed describing the temperature dependence of gas density (equation of state) and the temperature dependence of viscosity. These may be written as: where c, and are constants. It is noted that in this formulation we neglected any temperature gradients within the solid particles, thus assuming these to be either sufficiently small or of sufficiently high thermal conductivity to meet this condition. The justification and consequences of this assumption will be mentioned in the discussion.

The flotation rate of coal has been studied using a continuous laboratory flotation cell and a multiple exposure photographic technique. The effects of particle size, reagent additions and cell turbulence on the flotation rate of coal have been investigated. The results have been analyzed in terms of current theories of particle bubble encounter and adhesion. The rupture forces which occur during particle bubble encounter have been shown to have an important effect on the flotation rate of coarse coal particles. The flotation of coal is a time dependent process, and in order to obtain a complete understanding of the operation it is necessary to determine the kinetics of the process. In coal flotation, the flotation rate and the associated values of cell productivity in terms of tons per kilowatt-hour and tons per cubic foot of cell volume are of greater importance than in most other mineral flotation operations. The reasons for this are associated with the low unit value of coal and the relatively high cost of coal flotation compared with other coal cleaning processes. An important aspect of coal flotation kinetics is the design of coal flotation cells. The cells used in many coal cleaning operations are often replicas of those used for the treatment of sulfide ores and are not necessarily suitable for the treatment of coal washing pulps, which usually contain a higher percentage of coarse and floatable material than the sulfide pulps for which the cells were designed. This disadvantage of many coal flotation cells has been recognized by Russian engineers who, by the addition of baffles to their subaeration coal flotation cells have increased the cell capacity by 100%. Investigation of the variables which influence flotation kinetics and cell productivity are, therefore, important to the coal industry where flotation is the only accepted method of cleaning the fine (-1/2mm) coal. The kinetics of the flotation process have been investigated in detail by Schumann10 who developed a continuous flotation cell which permitted the study of flotation under steady state conditions. This technique has been used by Gaudin et a1.,6 Brown and Smith and recently by Jowett and Savfi.7 The latter authors have developed a refined mathematical treatment for interpreting the results of continuous laboratory tests. Attempts have also been made to study flotation kinetics using conventional batch testing techniques. The experimental difficulties, however, and the problems of determining the order of the flotation rate process have made this technique of dubious value. A summary of the proposed rate equations for batch testing and the difficulties associated with this technique is given by Brown and Smith. 2 The experimental techniques described above are concerned with the rate of production of froth product. However, several authors, notably Sutherland, 11 Bogdanov1 and Philippoff, 9 have analyzed flotation

WHEN a steel in the austenitic state, with all its carbon in solution, is maintained, at constant temperature, in contact with a gas that removes the carbon from the surface, vet without otherwise altering the composition of the steel, the change in weight of the specimen, after any period of exposure, is a direct measure of the amount of carbon it has then lost. The purpose of the present paper is to show how, by application of established mathematical reasoning based on the fundamental diffusion law and on certain postulates, this loss of weight yields a complete picture of the distribution of carbon throughout a specimen of regular shape after any period of exposure, with all the accuracy required in any practical occurrence of decarburization. Precisely the same is true for the gain in weight during the reverse process of carburization, or for the gradual gain or loss of any element, so long as the steel comprises only a single phase at temperature, provided always that the experimental conditions conform to the postulates. The change in carbon content from surface to center of the specimen is always continuous, when everything is in solution, even though under the microscope the decarburized zone (or carburized rim) may appear to be sharply defined. The experimental procedure is described and some typical results are presented, which are then interpreted by application of the diffusion law. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Initially an endeavor was made to follow the gain of weight during the process of carburization in a hydrogen-toluene atmosphere, but it was soon found that the specimen became coated with graphite, which could not be removed without some loss of metal; therefore it was decided to continue carburization until the steel was saturated throughout, to remove all graphite from the surface of the specimen, and then to follow the loss of weight during decarburization in a moist hydrogen atmosphere at the same temperature as that used for carburizing. The carburizing procedure has been described in an earlier paper;1 it suffices to state here that the carburization lasted about 140 hr. at 760°C. (1760°F.) and 44 hr. at 1110°C. (2030°F.), these periods being long enough-on the basis of the calculations presented later-to ensure that the specimen was about 9.99 per cent saturated at each temperature. The speci¬men was a cylinder about 3.8 cm. long and 0.475 cm. in diameter; the materials were carbonyl iron, a commercial low-metalloid iron, and a steel with 3.6 per cent nickel and the usual proportion of other elements. The fully [carburized] specimen, after cooling at the top of the furnace tube, was placed in a lathe and sandpapered to remove all graphite; then the diameter was measured with a micrometer caliper, and the initial weighing (corresponding to complete saturation) was made. Introduction. THE Georgetown mining district is located in Deerlodge county, Mont., about 20 miles west of Anaconda. It lies along the divide between the headwaters of Warm Springs creek, draining eastward, and Flint creek, flowing west and north through the Philipsburg valley. The actual divide is formed by Cable mountain, a narrow ridge running north and south, terminating to the south in low hills overlooking Georgetown lake, and to the north in a high, rugged plateau that falls off to the west to the wide valley of Flint creek. Oil the eastern, or Warm Springs, slope of Cable mountain is the Cable mine, with the Hidden Lake mine a few miles north. On the western slope is the Southern Cross group, with smaller mines, the Twilight, Cincinnati, Red Lion, and Big Bill, at intervals to the northward. The Georgetown mines lie in the hills south of Cable mountain; the Philipsburg mines, of which the Granite Mountain, Bimetallic, Hope, and Trout are the chief, form a separate group to the north, overlooking Flint Creek valley and Philipsburg. (See Fig. 1.1) The region ranges in elevation from 5,000 to 9,000 ft. It is, with the exception of the lower valleys, well timbered with small fir and pine, although Cable mountain and the higher summits to the northward rise slightly above timber line. The main valleys have the smooth contours of glaciation, and their mouths are frequently choked with morainal deposits.
