The subject of violent bumps in coal mines has been again brought to attention by a recent succession of such occurrences in the coal mines of the Cumberland field of eastern Kentucky and southern Virginia, which have caused fatalities and injuries to underground employees, a report on which is being issued by the United States Bureau of Mines1. The A.I.M.E. has had two valuable papers on bumps in the No. 2 Mine, Springhill, Nova Scotia, each followed by general discussion on bumps and their causes2. This paper gives a brief review of suggested causes and remedial measures given in English, Canadian and United States reports on blimps in coal mines, and then presents suggestions arising from the writer's recent investigation of the bumps in the Cumberland mines, made at the request of the mine operators, to determine the causes and remedies. These bumps, which occur under the simplest natural conditions, provide better opportunity for analysis of causes and effects than afforded under more complex conditions. The simple conditions in this field consist of relatively thin and level coal beds and uniform roof strata free from folding and faulting. Definition of Bumps Bumps in coal mines, as defined in this paper, are sudden violent bursts of coal that usually occur without warning in the extraction of pillars and may or may not be accompanied incidentally by falls of draw slate, upheaval of bottom and smashing of timbers. The growth temperature of dendrite tips has been measured in a binary alloy system, Al-Cu, as a function of rate of formation of solid phase. Metallographic examination has rerealed the dendritic structure dereloped during different stages of the freezing process and factors influencing the undercooling, such as solute buildup, surface tension, and kinetic effects, have been estimated. Practical implications of the results are discussed. THE development of a dendritic growth pattern during the solidification of metals and alloys has an influence at least equal to that of grain size on the properties of the casting or ingot being produced. and consequently much interest has been devoted to the study of this phenomenon. A review of the knowledge gathered up to 1964 has been given by Chalmers.' Among recent publications in the area the works of Jackson et al 2 and Flemings and his coworkers3,4 are of special interest. This work is an experimental study of the factors which influence the development of a dendritic pattern during the solidification of a typical binary alloy system, A1-Cu, when there is no heat source in the liquid. This means that the temperature and the temperature gradient are controlled by the heat extraction from and latent heat evolved by the growing crystals. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Samples were prepared from a master alloy made up of aluminum, 99.995 pct, and copper. 99.99 pct, of the concentrations given below and of sufficient size to fill cylindrical graphite molds of 35 mm ID and 35 mm height. Bottom. wall. and lid of the graphite molds were all of 6 mm thickness, Fig. 1. Thin ceramic thermocouple shields could be introduced at different positions in the sample through holes in the lid. The assembly was heated in a small vertical resistance furnace to a suitable temperature. 700° to 720°C. which is well above the melting point of the sample. It was thereafter taken out of the furnace and chilled at selected rates, and the temperature changes in the sample were recorded. For high sensitivity in the temperature recordings, a reference thermocouple was held in a solidifying pure aluminum melt. which was very well insulated and therefore was at a constant temperature. 660°C, for nearly half an hour. The thermocouples were connected so that the difference voltage was fed into the recorder of which the most sensitive range was 1 mV. Temperature variations could be read to within 0.l°C. The thermocouples used were of the Chromel-Alumel type (28- or 38-gage wires) and the recorder a two-pen Moseley strip chart recorder. The different rates of chilling were obtained in the following way. a) The graphite crucible was wrapped in one or two layers of an insulating. feltlike material (Fiberfrax paper from the Carborundum Co.). The drop in temperature per unit time after complete solidification could thereby be varied from 8" to 18°C per min. This corresponds to a rate of heat extraction in the given samples from 0.08 to 0.17 cal cm-' sec-I. 6) The bare graphite mold was placed free on a piece of firebrick. The measured temperature drop was around 50°C per min (-0.5 cal cm-" ' sec- I). c) By blowing compressed air through a tube with many holes surrounding the mold in a ring shape. the rate of heat transfer could be raised to 150' to 200°C per min (-1.7 cal cm-3 sec- I). d) Cooling rates around 1000 C per mill (-9.4 cal cm-3 sec-l) were obtained by substituting the air in the device used in c by water. The range of cooling rates used in these experiments correspond to technical casting processes from slow solidification as obtained in sand molds to very rapid freezing which occurs in some continuous casting and welding processes. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The A1-Cu system was chosen for the experiments: the relevant part of the phase diagram is reproduced in Fig. 2. Observation of the Center Temperature. The ratio of stable to unstable inclusions was found to ploy an essential role in the process of sccorldar-y recrystatlizalion in Si-Fe. The analysis of the free energy of inclusions in the range of heat-treatment of individual inclusions to be predicted. The effects MnS. ns inslable inclusions. were investigated. TO secure a high induction, the secondary recryslulliztt-lion associated wilh the texture is necessary. To obtain a low core loss an additional refiuing in the solid state is required. It has been found that sulfur can be more easily removed in racunm than in hydrogen and thai this process was hindered by the prescrzce of INCLUSIONS play an essential role in the development of cube-on-edge texture in Si-Fe. Their function consists in restraining the growth of primary grains up to about 900°C and in passing subsequently into solution at higher temperatures. This process is accompanied by the selective growth of secondary grains with (110)[001] orientation. The general effect of inclusions depends on such factors as the type of impurities, their amount. dispersion and stability, the conditions of diffusion in the space of lattice of metal, and the reactions at the metal/gas interface. In recent years, some of these factors were the subject of a special investigation. A positive influence of Mns, siN,' and vN3 has been established. The quantity of impurities4 and their dispersion5 have been found to be of major importance. Attention was called to the vital importance of diffusion and the conditions under which the impurities are removed from metal., It has also been demonstrated that in Fe-Si alloys by the techniques of powder metallurgy a special opportunity exists to obtain the (110)[001] type texture. 6 The aim of this work was to conduct qualitative investigations on the influence of inclusion stability on the development of cube-on-edge texture in a metal containing approximately 3 pct Si. Experiments were carried out on cast alloys and on those manufactured by powder-metallurgy techniques. The results obtained from these experiments were utilized to explain the phenomena involved and to analyze the relationships between stable and unstable inclusions and the magnetic properties of alloys. EXPERIMENTS AND RESULTS The raw materials used in these experiments were the powder of carbonyl iron with the analysis (in pct) 0.044 C, 0.01 Mn, 0.005 Si, 0.009 P, 0.002 S, traces of Cu, 0.06 Ni, 0.0015 Al, 0.03 Cr, 0.02 Mo, 0.01 Ti, 0.002 Co, traces of Pb, and the powder of silicon containing 94.14 Si, 0.003 S, 0.048 C. The powders were ground and mechanically mixed in 100-g batches. and then pressed at 9 tons per sq cm into 74 by 24 by 8 mm blocks. Sintering was carried out at 1100°C for 12 hr in vacuum (2 x lo-' Tr) or in hydrogen. In this instance the material was heated slowly and subjected to prolonged soaking at 350°, 650°, and 750 2C, respectively, to secure reduction of ferro-oxides. This was checked by making measurements of the dew point, which was found to change from -15" to -35°C after reduction. The compacts after sintering were hot-rolled to 2.4 mm, annealed at 800 C, and finally cold-reduced to 0.35 mm with intermediate annealing at 800°C at a gage of about 0.8 mm. The portion of the Nb-Sn phase diagram between 75 and 79 at. pct Nb at temperatures near the liquidus has been investigated by melting alloys of known composition and examining the microstmc-tzlres resulting when these melts were quenched. The Nb-Sn samples were contained in magnesia sleeves, and were mounted in a high-pressure apparatus. It was shown that Nb3Sn me1ts by a peri-tectic decomposition and that the composition of the compound Nb3Sn at the peritectic horizontal lies between 77 and 78 at. pct Nb. Analysis of the phases present in the samples was accomplished by anodic staining techniques and an electron-microbeam analyzer. DURING the past several years a great deal of work has been devoted to the Nb-Sn system, and the bulk of this work has been primarily concerned with the intermetallic phase Nb3Sn. However, the melting characteristics of Nb3Sn have not been investigated because of the difficulty in maintaining known compositions due to tin losses by vaporization, and the added difficulty of containing Nb-Sn alloys without sample-container reaction at the high temperatures involved. This paper reports on the development of a technique for containing Nb-Sn alloys under pressure high enough to prevent tin losses at temperatures in excess of the liquidus. Using this technique, melts of known composition were made and a phase diagram near the liquidus is proposed based on the microstructures resulting when these melts were quenched. EXPERIMENTAL The Nb-Sn alloys weighing 0.7 g each were prepared in the form of cylinders. Niobium powder, -200, +325 mesh, and tin shavings with a minute amount of tin powder for a binder were mixed in the desired proportions and cold-pressed at 50,000 psi in a 0.150-in. die. This cylinder was then enclosed as shown in Fig. 1, and the entire arrangement mounted in a 2.6-in. pyrophyllite tetrahedron.' The desired temperatures (-2500°C) presented several problems in high-pressure container materials. Boron nitride, the usual sample holder, was found to react with niobium to form the nitride. However, MgO cans and plugs machined from refractory rods did not melt nor react with the sample. Thick tantalum contact disks were used to carry the large currents (~450 amps) to the graphite heater, since tantalum did not melt and had enough strength to prevent extrusion of the sample. It was further observed that the graphite heater and tantalum disks could not be in direct contact with the pyrophyllite because it melts and decomposes at these temperatures to kyanite and coesite (SiO2),2 the former reacting with graphite and the latter with tantalum to form the silicide. This paper describes a technique of polishing and etching specimens of open-hearth furnace slags or hearth aggregates for identification of the crystalline constituents —lime (CaO), tricalcium silicate (3CaO.SiO2), dicalcium silicate (2CaO.-SiO2), rnonticellite (CaO.MgO.SiO2), or forsterile (2MgO.SiO2), with especial em-phasis on the mineral merwinite (3CaO.-MgO.2SiO2). With proper standardization, this identification does not require the use of the petrographic microscope. The composition of basic open-hearth slags and furnace bottoms falls, almost without exception, within systems containing CaO, MgO, 'IFeO,,, MnO and SiOz, in which the number of basic molecules so greatly exceeds the orthosilicate ratio (two molecules of base to one of silica) that free basic oxides, and combinations between them such as alumi-nates or ferrites, are present in cooled specimens. Orthosilicates of (CaO + NgO) are the most common in such specimens, since in nearly all cases, except premelt slags, the molecular ratio of (CaO + MgO) to SiO, is more than 2 to I. When sufficient lime is available it combines with the silica to form dicalcium silicate (2Ca0.Si02), which contains little, if any, IvfgO, FeO or MnO in solid solution whereas the latter oxides combine to form the oxide solid solution known as periclase. If the lime present is insufficient to form dicalcium silicate (2Ca0.Si02) it combines with Mgo to form either merwillite or moIlticellite (SiOz); these minerals take little if any FeO or MnO into solid solution and the remaining MgO, FeO and hInO combine as periclase. This generalization seems to be valid for basic slags and furnace bottoms, since minerals such as Ca0.MnOSi02 and CaO.FeO.SiOz are found only in slags in which the lime-silica ratio is less than 2 and are not observed in 'pecimens from furnace bottoms. The identification of crystalline constituents in such materials, especially of fine crystals in the groundmass, is difficult under the petrographic microscope. They are often masked by their neighbors because of their small size in relation to the thickness of the thin section and because of the presence of Opaque Or colored constituents. The indices of refraction and the optical sign of the mineral are sometimes difficult to determine because of the small size or because Of twinning or of inclusions within the crystal. Moreover, the positive identification of merwinite (3Ca0.Mg0.2Si02) from its optical properties is usually difficult in the presence of dicalcium silicate (zCaO.SiO2). CaO, MgO, jCa0.Si02 and 2Ca0.SiOz in open-hearth 'lags have been identified for a number of years in the U.S. Steel Corporation Laboratory by the usual

When cylindrical powder compacts of nickelous oxide (NiO) are heated in an equilibrated stream of SO3, SO,, and 02, in the temperature range 500°to 800°c, tlickelous suljate (NiSO4) is formed as an adherent layer on the oxide. The reaction is diffusion-controlled, with an activation energy of 13 ± 3 kcal per mole. When cylindrical powder compacts of NiSO4 are heated in a stream of dry nitrogen in the temperature range 1000 0to 11500C, NiO is formed at a well-defined interface between the sulfate and oxide. The interjhce migrates into the sulfate at a constant rate at a constant temperature and gas flow. The reaction rate increases with increasing gas flow and decreases with increasing partial pressure of SO3 in the gas stream. Resolution of the partial-pressure data with a Lang-itzliir Adsorption Isothern suggests that about 80 pct of the NiO interface is covered with SO3. The heat of adsovption is about 68 kcal per mole. The activation energy of the decomposition process is 61 ± 3 kcal per mole. MOST of the work reported on the formation and decomposition of nickel sulfate is related to thermodynamics.1-3 No quantitative work has been reported on the decomposition process. The only kinetic work reported on the formation is that by Fletcher and shelef.4-6 whose main purpose was to study the effects of alkali metal sulfate additions on increasing the rate of nickel sulfate formation. They found that, in the absence of an additive, only small amounts of sulfate were formed and the kinetic data were difficult to interpret. However, they suggested that the sulfa-tion of nickel oxide is a diffusion-controlled process for which the activation energy is approximately 17 kcal per mole.6 In this paper, both the formation and decomposition reactions will be examined; and based on the effects of temperature, flow rate, interfacial area, and partial-pressure of sulfur trioxide, mechanisms and activation energies will be suggested for both processes. EXPERIMENTAL Material. The nickel source material used in all experiments was Baker and Adamson Reagent Grade NiSO4. 6H2O, for which the following analysis was supplied by the manufacturer: C1, 0.001 pct; NO3, 0.005 pct; Co, 0.02 pct; Cu, 0.005 pct; Pb, 0.002 pct; Fe, 0.001 pct: insol, 0.005 pct. The anhydrous sulfate was prepared by heating the hydrate at 420°C in a muffle furnace for 5 hr. Nickel oxide was prepared by decomposing the sulfate at 950°C over a period of 10 hr. Method. The technique used for measuring the rates of formation and decomposition was developed earlier in these laboratories.7-8 The method is based on the observation that the kinetic parameters of a reaction can be established in a flow system, with specimens prepared by compacting powder to a uniform pellet shape. This is in part a review paper, indicating the various steps that have been taken in developing hindered-settling apparatus, some of the standard data that have been obtained, and some of the conclusions one is led to as to the effect of it in improving concentrating-methods and machinery, and in part it brings in some unpublished work. Causes oF Loss in ORe-ConcEntration. In making a study of the separation of valuable minerals from the waste gangue, particularly by water concentrators, it is necessary to define, first of all, what are the causes of loss that are likely to interfere with the concentration. Having made this definition, we can then study to see in what may the machines make their losses, and plan remedies for them in an intelligent way. Losses may be stated to occur as included grains, as flat or long grains, as fine free mineral, and as absolute slime. We will take these up one by one, as follows: Included Grains.—Fig. 1 shows by a set of diagrams how included grains may occur : first, where the heavy mineral grains attached to the quartz are of large size; secondly, where they are of small size; and thirdly, where very fine particles of heavy mineral are included in the quartz. We have to decide in regard to included grains whether they are rich enough to go direct to the furnace, or poor enough to throw away, or whether they lie between these two points and require recrush-ing as the only means of severing the values from the waste. This last case is the orlly one requiring special treatment at our hands. We will therefore consider that next.

The elevated-temperature steady-state creep behavior of polycrystalline a Zr was studied in vacuo under constant tensile stress. The experiments were conducted from 660° to 845°C over the stress range 870 to 5400 psi. The steady-state creep rate, is, of a Zr was found to be related to the applied stress, a, and temperature, T, by the equation where C is a constant. Two interpretations of the data are considered, each requiring different values of the parameters ß, Q, and . It is shown that this formula can be derived using Gilman's phenomeno logical equation relating dislocation velocity to the shear stress for the case where dislocation mobility is limited by the nucleation of kink motion. From the fundamental dependence of strain rate on dislocation velocity and the density of mobile dislocations, the factor exp(ßo) can be related to the stress dependence of the dislocation density, and Q to the energy of kink formation. The two interpretations considered are as follows: Case I—the parameters are adjusted so that the equation above describes the data over the entire range of stress and temperature, implying that creep is controlled exclusively by dislocation glide; Case IIthe parameters are adjusted to allow for the possibility that creep is diffusion-controlled at high stresses but glide-controlled at low stresses. For both cases the values of the parameters are within the spread permitted by the data. Factors favorable to the observation of the unusual stress -dependence of i, for a Zr are discussed and it is shown that the anomalously rapid rates of self-diffusion and the low modulus on the principal glide system are primarily responsible for the anomalous creep behavior. Metal-lograflhic observations are presented and discussed with reference to the overall creep behavior. PREVIOUS investigations of the creep behavior of a Zr have been conducted from room temperature to about 500C The results of these investigations are primarily of engineering significance because of the variety of conditions under which they were carried out, and the low testing temperatures employed. Little information is available concerning the fundamental nature of the elevated-temperature creep behavior of a Zr. This investigation of the creep behavior of a Zr above half the melting temperature (the melting temperature, T,, of a Zr is estimated to be about 1860"K was initiated because there are two significant anomalies of the physical properties of a Zr: a) the rate of self-diffusion in polycrystalline a Zr is anomalously rapid: b) both Young's modulus for polycrystalline a Zr and the shear modylus as-sociated with the prismatic slip system { 1010)( 1120) (the principal slip system in a Zr 7) have anomalously large temperature variations The importance of these quantities to the understanding of creep behavior has been demonstrated, and it was hoped that this investigation would provide a critical test of the predictions based upon the analysis of creep data for other pure metals. However, as the investigation progressed it became increasingly clear that the unusual creep behavior of a Zr could not be analyzed in a conventional manner. 1) EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURES Two grades of zirconium, designated A and B, were used in this investigation. The analyses, as supplied by the vendors, are presented in Table I. Material A, with a nominal purity of 99.84 pct, was supplied by the Wah Chang Corp. in the form of cold-rolled sheet from which specimens were machined without further fabrication. Material B, with a nominal purity of 99.95 pct, was purchased from the Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corp. in the form of iodide crystal bar.

Beyond this elimination of waste there is another field of progress in the adoption of measures for positive improvement in production.

IN 1948 the U. S. Bureau of Mines began a three-phase program to evaluate the extent and quality of U. S. coking coal: 1) a factual appraisal of known recoverable reserves in beds of mineable thickness, 2) a study of preparation characteristics, and 3) a study of carbonization properties. A previous paper presented the methods used in assessing reserves.' Although this investigation is only partly completed, data on coking properties of the Pittsburgh district coals are now available. The results are presented in this article. When coals are selected for manufacture of metallurgical coke more factors must be considered than for any other major use, as no basic industry requires coal of such high quality and uniformity. This is particularly true in the Pittsburgh district, where blast furnace practice is based on use of cokes from high quality coals. Although it is true that inferior coals are carbonized in other industrial areas, both here and abroad, the Pittsburgh coals are the best economically obtainable in the required tonnages, even though they are not the most desirable for metallurgical use. In the general evaluation of suitability of coals for coke making, particular attention is given to: 1) reserve, 2) ash and sulfur content, 3) inherent properties of forming strong, well fused coke, 4) expanding characteristics, and 5) blending properties. Items 1 and 2 are covered in detail in the first two phases of the survey, and coking behavior is considered in items 3 through 5. Problems is Coal Evaluation: Although not all coal beds of immediate or potential use to the coking industry in the Pittsburgh area have been tested for their coking properties, enough tests have been made to permit certain generalized statements. Virtually all the coals that will be used in this district are from the Appalachian region, and except for high oxygen coals from outcrops or stripping operations, they are coking coals. Hence the evaluation problem is not so much that of distinguishing between coking and noncoking coals as attempting to measure quantitatively differences in the coking and expanding properties of the better coking coals. Quantitative differentiation between good coking coals, is complex, since differences in their coking abilities are frequently of about the same magnitude as the precision of the test. Small-scale tests are generally unsuitable for measuring these slight differences, and there has been gradual acceptance of pilot-scale tests. Test Methods Employed: All the data reported here were obtained in two units known as the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) carbonization apparatus and the sole-heated expansion oven. The BM-AGA unit, which consists essentially of a cylindrical steel retort about 18 in. diam and 26 in. high, carbonizes enough coal (180 lb) to allow evaluation of the coke by standard methods of the American Society for Testing Materials. The BM-AGA carbonization procedure and methods of testing the gas, liquid, and solid products have been described.' Expanding characteristics of the coals were determined in the sole-heated expansion oven," wherein the coal charge, heated from the bottom only, is carbonized under a constant applied force and the linear expansion or contraction is measured. Although results in this oven have never been quantitatively correlated with the expansion behavior of coals in conventional slot ovens, they are useful in assessing expansion behavior. In this report discussion will be confined to results obtained from these pilot-scale units, although the following data are available for most coals: proximate and ultimate analyses, free swelling index, agglutinating value, and plasticity. Sources of Coals Tested: In selection of coals for coke manufacture, economic considerations are as important as quality, and each coke plant balances these two factors to meet requirements of the most satisfactory coke at lowest price. Although these economic factors may in some instances outbalance small differences in coke quality, they are usually specific to each coke plant and cannot be given in any general statement. Recognizing that coal and plant operating costs are beyond the scope of the survey, the USBM evaluates the coking quality of various coals without regard to their competitive economic status. The mines which I am about to describe are all situated in the northern part of the States of Nuevo Leon and Coahuila, Mexico, between the twenty-sixth and twenty-seventh degrees of latitude. They might be grouped, orographically, into four classes: 1. Those in the Sierra de la Ygnana chain; 2. Those in the Sierra de Gomez chain; 3. Those in the Cerro Mercado; 4. Those in the Sierra de San Marcos chain. (See large map.) The first two of these may be further arranged in one geographical district, to which the name, "the Villaldatna. district," may be applied, and the last may be ascribed to the geographical district of " Monclova." Geologically described, the country rock, in which four of the six mines occnr, is a limestone, concerning which a few words will be said further on, to wit.: The Arroyo (gulch), the Montanos and the Pinitos (pines), in the Villaldama district, and La Paloma (the dove), or Iron Mine, in the Monclova district. The San Rafael appears to lie in granite, or a heavy-bedded gneiss, presenting most of the characteristics of the latter, though the contact plane of the limestone is not far off. It is certainly worthy of attention that the ore occurs in that portion of the crystalline rock, which is nearest to the limestone, and it has been thought by some observers to be a true contact vein. It is well known that veins of this character are very often distinguished for constancy and richness. Although the undersigned cannot entirely free himself from the impression that this proximity of different formations has had an important influence in the origin of the part of the vein on which this mine is situated; still he was unable to establish it actually at the contact of the limestone and granite, but rather a short distance within the latter. In order to test the performance of ZrO, (CaO) and Tho,(Yz03) electrolytes in the electrochemical determination of oxygen activities in liquid metals at steel-rrzakitng temperatures , electromotive force measurements have been made with the following cells: The oxygen-- activities are calculated from the electmrnotive forces for the investigated systems. The standard free energy of- formation of MnO and the activity of manganese in Fe-Mn melts are derived. Indications are that the Zr 0z(Ca0) electrolyte exhibits little electronic conductivity at oxygen pressures as low as 10'a atnz at 1600°C; however, the partial electronic conductivity may become noticeable at lower oxygen activities. The Tho,(Yz03) electrolyte is found to be an ionic conductor at the oxygen pressure as low as that for the Mn + MnO equilibrium, but exhibits partial electronic conductivity at oxygen pressures higher than 10"1 atm (1500°C). fi. better control of oxidation and deoxidation reactions in steelmaking may be facilitated if the oxygen activity in the steel is known during various stages of the process. In the present work oxygen activities have been measured in liquid iron, manganese, and iron alloys with galvanic cells using ZrOz(CaO) and s solid electrolytes with the object of establishing the range of oxygen pressure in which these materials can be used as electrolytes at steelmaking temperatures. Calcia-stabilized zirconia and Tho2-Y203 solid solutions are oxygen ion conductors. Such electrolytes were first used by Kiukkola and Wagner1 and Peters and ~ann' in galvanic cells for the determination of thermodynamicquantities of oxide systems in the temperature range 700" to 1200°C. At these moderate temperatures calcia-stabilized zirconia has been found to exhibit predominantly ionic conductivity at oxygen pressures as low as those for the Cr + Crz03 equilibrium,394 but at lower oxygen pressures elec- tronic contribution to conductivity becomes significants4 The Th02-Y203 solid solutions are ionic conductors at oxygen pressures lower than those applicable to zirconia base electrolytes.5'6 At high oxygen pressures Thoz base electrolytes exhibit significant p-type semiconduction. At the time the present experiments were carried out several papers1'-* were published on the electrochemical determination of oxygen activities in liquid iron using the ZrOz(CaO) electrolyte. The results of different authors do not agree well. For instance, according to Fischer and ~ckermann" stabilized zirconia can be used to measure oxygen contents in liquid iron larger than 0.02 wt pct, but according to Baker and west1' ZrOz(CaO) cannot be used for the determination of oxygen content in liquid iron because of high electronic contribution to the conductivity. Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of the apparatus used. About 500 g of liquid metal is contained in a crucible into which a stabilized zirconia or Th02(Y203) tube is immersed. A platinum contact wire is pressed (with a spring mechanism) against the inside bottom wall of the electrolyte tube. The tube is flushed continuously with a stream of air, CO-CO, (or Hz-C02) (at 0.96 atm and at a rate of about 300 cu cm per min), via an alumina tube inserted inside the electrolyte tube. This alumina tube also contains the Pt-Pt/10 pct Rh thermocouple. A capillary alumina tube shielding the other contact wire is immersed in the melt. The molybdenum contact wires were used mostly; in some cases platinum wire was employed. Molybdenum has the advantage that it dissolves more slowly in the melt than platinum. The whole cell was contained in the alumina reaction tube of a resistance furnace with molybdenum winding. The reaction tube was closed gas tight at both ends and flushed continuously with argon. INTRODUCTION Metallic minerals have been formed only through complex geologic processes which took place at certain stages of the earth's histrory. Their concentration, abundance, and distribution are, therefore, restricted geologically, and very small in global scale. Ore is a mineral deposit or mineral concentration from which metals can be economically extracted by the contemporaneous technology. By this definition, several factors should be considered before any mineral deposit is regarded as an ore. The grade of mineral concentration and the scale of the reserve are most important. Demand for the metal and its price are the other factors. Advancement of technology in mining and extraction are also vital. Copper, for example, is now commonly extracted from the ores containing less than 0.3% of the metal. However, in the 1700's the common minerable grade was about 13%, and in the 1900's between 5 to 2.5%. This decrease in minerable grade is a function of not only the demand for copper, but also technological progress in mining and metal extraction in this case. Availability of ores has recently been subject to political factors, which were not the primary concern in the past. The petroleum of the Middle East is the prominent example. The metallic minerals are classified into three categories. The first one is the minerals free from these factors mentioned above. Iron and manganese belong to this category. The second category include aluminum, copper, nickel, cobalt, titanium, lead and zinc. These metals can be provided by the future progress in technology which enables the use of lower grade deposits. The third one represents the metals whose occurrence is geologically limited, and, thus, subject to the political factors. Niobium and tantalium are the example. In this article, I discuss these minerals in detail to give an outline of the factors which brought their concentration, distribution and availability. SELECTED MINERAL CONCENTRATIONS Iron Major iron ore deposits are the features of the relics of ancient continental crusts. They are found in all the continents where the Precambrian rocks expose. They do not occur in the oldest rocks (3,000my old) nor in the youngest ones (600my old). They are sedimentary rocks, normally, exhibiting alternations of bands of iron oxides (magnetite and hematite) or iron silicates (especially greenalite), and bands of silica, variously described as jasper, quartzite and chert. The best known banded iron ore deposits exist in the Lake Superior region of the North America, and their distribution extends at intervals to Labrador of Canada. Other examples occur in the U.S.S.R. Brazil, Venezela, India, the mainland China, and southern and western Africa (Liberia and Guines) (Table 1). Recently large deposits have been discovered in the Hammersley region of the western Australia, and northern and central region of Brazil. These ore deposits were originally formed in shallow seas where simple but abundant life existed. After the deposition, enrichment processes , related to tropical weathering, have brought about wholesale removal of silica to produce the deposits of best quality. Ores with 50-60% iron represent the best products in the Precambrian fields. Since local reserves of this high grade ores approach to exhaustion, benefication processes have been used effectively to upgrade much leaner ores (for example, taconite with 20-25% iron in Minesota, U.S.A.). There are two other types of iron deposits. Ironstone, a sedimentary rock containing goethite, chamosite and siderite, first appeared in early Paleozoic times in the stratigraphic record, and reached its Zenith in the Jurassic. Similar bedded iron deposits are found in the belt from the Cleveland Hills to Oxford in England, and in the "minette" oolitic ores of Alsace-Lorraine in Luxenburg and France. The iron content of these ironstones seldom exceed 30%, but they usually contain calcite and are self-fluxing. They also have phosphorous as undesirable impurity. Because of the grade and impurities, they require more fuel than the Precambrian ores. The third type of iron ore is associated with igneous activity and consists of magnetite and some hematite, and apatite. This deposit is believed to be a product of magmatic differenciation. It occurs in Kiruna of Arctic Sweden. The iron ore, therefore, present no global shortage problem. They extend to considerable depths. Their concentration is largest among the metals. If low grades were treated, the resource can be stepped up much substantially. Manganese Manganese is a ferro--alloy metal, thus, essential to the manufacture of sound steel. Manganese comes from manganese oxide and silicate ores. Many minerals contain manganese, but only a few oxides, silicates, and, in some places, carbonates (rhodecrosite) are mined as ore. FOREWOHD-Americans have been able to create wealth from the nation's natural resources to an extent unprecedented in recorded history, thanks largely to the existence of a free market and of a rational body of laws. The General Mining Law of 1872, for instance, by establishing the rules of the game, was quite effective in channeling the ability of Americans to discover and develop mineral deposits. Another example was the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 which made available the more easily discovered mineral deposits by spelling out the conditions and rules under which miners could obtain leases on federal lands.

Intermittent injection of gas in gas-lift pumping is a variation of the common practice in that the gas is delivered to the well for a short period, called the "on time," followed by a period during which none is admitted, called the "off time," instead of being admitted continuously at a constant rate or by intermittent flowing in which it is occasionally delivered to the well in just sufficient quantity to flow off the accumulated head of fluid. The term "gas" is used throughout this discussion but it should be remembered that in so far as the operation is concerned either air or natural gas may be used. The equipment at the well is the same as commonly used in gas-lift installations and gas may be admitted to either the tubing or the casing. It seldom occurs that all the wells on a lease can be pumped economically by intermittent injection from one header. Wells that have flow characteristics which permit their being handled together have their intake lines grouped at a central compressor station. Well groups may consist of two or more wells. The total volume of gas delivered by each group of compressors goes to one well at a time through a quick opening valve, each well connected to the header receiving its charge of gas in turn. Special cases may require a deviation from this arrangement. The distribution of the gas to the different wells is effected by an automatic timing device which operates quick-opening valves on the intake lines. The timing mechanism may be actuated by electricity, liquid or gas pressure, The essential factor in the operation of the timing mechanism is that as one intake valve is closed another must be opened. Water-operated Timing Device Timing devices operate the intake valves either directly, or indirectly by pilot valves. Of the former type one that is operated by water and has given satisfactory service is shown in Fig. 1 and can be made on the lease. The horizontal cylinder is a piece of 10-in. casing about 7 ft. long, closed at each end and free to oscillate about a fulcrum at the center.

Creep tests were performed at 500°F on polished specimens of A1-3 pct Cu at stresses of 2000, 4000, and 6000 psi. The effects of the size and distnbution of the second phase were studied in connection with the mechanisms of deformation, especially grain boundary sliding. Although the amount of grain boundary sliding varied considerably for the different heat treatments, yestriction of grain boundary sliding is not due primarily to precipitate on the grain boundary. NUMEROUS prior investigations of grain boundary sliding, notably those of McLean, 1 Rachinger, 2 Rhines, Bond, and Kissel, 3 and Brunner and Grant,4 have established the importance of this phenomenon in the deformation of pure aluminum and its solid-solution alloys at elevated temperatures. An extension of this kind of study to the case of a simple two-phase structure is an important step towards understanding the deformation behavior of more complex alloys. A two-phase A1-3 pct Cu alloy was selected for this study. The creep behavior of alloys in this system has been studied by Sully and Hardy,5 by Underwood, Marsh, and Manning,' and by Pelloux, Chaudhuri, and Grant.7 In these studies, the prior heat treatments were such that some precipitation took place during the tests in most cases. Pelloux, Chaudhuri, and Grant7 studied the creep of A1-2 and 3 pct Cu alloys in the overaged condition. Their results indicated that the structure most effective in promoting high-temperature strength consisted of a fine, closely spaced grain precipitate and large, widely spaced particles on the grain boundary. The present work consists of quantitative meas- urements of grain boundary sliding during creep of an A1-3 pct CU alloy with four different precipitate distributions. The aims were to quantitatively define the role of the second phase on grain boundary sliding, and to obtain information regarding the mechanism of grain boundary sliding. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE A high-purity A1-3 pct Cu alloy, kindly supplied by Alcoa, was used in this investigation. The composition of the alloy in weight percent was as shown in Table I. This composition is such that A12Cu exists as a second phase at temperatures below 850°F. A homogeneous grain size of 0.6 to 0.8 mm was obtained by annealing the machined test bars for 5 min at 1000°F, furnace cooling to 930°F, and homogenizing for 5 hr. Following the recrystalli-zation and homogenizing anneal, four different heat treatments shown in Fig. 1 were utilized. The F7 and F5 treatments utilize a furnace cool to the aging temperature while Q7 and Q5 have a water quench from the homogenization temperature before aging. Figs. 2 to 5, and Table 11, show the size and shape of precipitate dispersions obtained with the above heat treatments. The heat treatments produce variations in the dispersion both in the grains and along the grain boundaries. Precipitate particles along the grain boundaries are rounded and large (about 1.5 p diameter) in the F5 and F7 structures (Figs. 3 and 5). The grain boundary precipitate was somewhat smaller (0.9 p diameter) in the Q7 structure and no grain boundary precipitate was detected in the Q5 structure using light microscopy. The pre-

WITHIN recent years people have begun to realize the importance and significance of the mining and allied industries. The leading part the engineer plays in civilization is becoming recognized. However accurate quantitative knowledge of the industrial importance of mining is still seldom possessed except by those close to this business. It is true that there are a few who go to the extreme and represent the whole progress of civilization as a reflection of man's gradual mastery of mineral utilization, but on the whole, the magnitude of the-industry is underestimated. In this paper I shall call attention briefly to the importance of mining in the United States, in Canada, and in the world. Ordinarily, the annual primary mineral production of the United States is about $5,500,000,000. The average for the last 5 years has been a little over that, but last year, sadly enough, it was less than 31/4 billion. Just now, we are on the decline, and have been for the last two years. In Canada, the 5-year average was about $268,000,000, and last year it was 227 million. Due in part to gold mines (in 1930, for the first time, Canada's gold production exceeded that of the United States), the Canadian average is holding up better than ours. Average world mineral production over the last -5 years has been estimated at about $12,000,000;000 whereas in 1931 it was less than than 8 billion.

The borate industry is one of the few sectors of the mining and mineral-processing industry which the United States still dominates. Since about 1927, the United States has supplied over half of the world's total boron and borate raw materials, and many of the chemical derivatives as well. Chiefly responsible for this record are companies producing sodium borates from two large deposits in southern California, at Boron (Kramer) and Searles Lake. The sodium borates, or products derived from borax and borax-containing brines, are the preferred borates for industry because they are soluble in water and combine readily with most other chemicals. Calcium borates are required for certain end uses, and these are produced from smaller colemanite-ulexite-probertite bodies. Sodium-free borate compounds also are produced from boric acid, which can be manufactured from either sodium or nonsodium borate minerals. During the past hundred years, the use of boron compounds throughout the world has risen from a few tons per year to the equivalent of over a million tons of B2O3. Leadership in supplying borates shifted from country to country and from region to region during this period, generally as the result of the development of newly discovered deposits that were better in quality, more accessible, or more economically exploitable than previous sources (Table 1). Primary Products and End Uses The principal borate products offered by primary producers in the United States are listed in Table 2. In general, these products are utilized worldwide by almost all consumers, regardless of the original source of the primary borates, In the United States, the primary borates all originate in southern California. Colemanite is produced as crude or processed crude ore from the Death Valley area and is utilized by the fiber glass and ceramic industries without further treatment. Production from Searles Lake, CA is from brines that are processed in chemical plants where borax and other compounds are recovered and the principal borate products are produced. At Boron, CA, the world's leading producer is mining a deposit of mineral borax and operating a chemical refinery. The mineral borax is mined together with included clay, and refined borax or "10-mol" is one of the refinery products. The mineral and the chemical compound are identical, Na2B4O7 • 10H2O.
