THERE are three primary plant nutrients—nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium—expressed in any fertilizer compound as percent N, percent P 2 O 5, and percent K 2 O, in that order. This article will be concerned with the first two. The chief source of P 2 O 5 is phosphate rock. As found in the western states phosphate rock is essentially tricalcium phosphate-calcium fluoride (fluor-patite). As such, it is quite water insoluble.

The developments of the past five years have shown that Alaska, as a field for mining, stands in the first rank among the possessions of the United States. Its annual gold output is now about $8,000,000. It produces silver, copper and coal in commercial quantities and its recently discovered tin and petroleum promise to become important products. Concurrent with the gradual development of this wealth, the mining public has ceased to regard the territory simply as an arctic province where a few placer-miners struggle with adverse conditions to secure a grub-stake or a modest fortune. Of late years there has been a large influx of capital to investigate its mineral resources, but in its area of nearly 600,000 sq. miles there still remain large, unexploited and little-known fields. This work of investigation has been carried on under adverse conditions, and reflects credit on all who have shared in it, whether prospectors, mining engineers, or geologists. It is the purpose of this paper to outline briefly what has been, and is being, accomplished toward furthering the knowledge of Alaska's mineral wealth, and in this connection to present a brief history of the operations of the United States Geological Survey in the territory. A list of the publications of the Geological Survey, which pertain to Alaska, is presented as an appendix, in the hope that it may prove useful to those who are interested in the mining of this northern province. During the Russian occupation of Alaska, from 1783 to 1866, but little attempt was made to delineate its geographic features or to study its geology and mineral resources. Abstract-Although the ore microscopist routinely examines polished sections to determine the mineralogy and texture of ores, his importance to the solution of problems peripheral to geology is not always fully realized. The techniques which he uses can be applied with little modification to the solution of a wide variety of beneficiation problem. By extending his studies beyond those normally considered to be of interest to the geologist, he can include examinations of polished sections of selected mill products. This is a logical extension, because the minerals and textures in the polished sections of ores are the same as those in mill Products. The mill dressing engineer should be more aware of the types of beneficiation problems that can be solved by the ore microscopist and what the ore microscopist can do for him. A greater degree of cooperation between the ore microscopist and the mill dressing engineer can be of significant mutual benefit. Ore microscopy holds an advantage over chemical analysis, because the interrelations and combinations of the mineral constituents of an ore or mil1 product can be visually determined. This advantage provides solutions to many beneficiation problems. Locking is a type of beneficiation problem that is particularly amenable to ore microscopy. The percentage, type, and distribution of locked particles can be readily determined with the aid of an ore microscope and an estimate made of the extent of additional grinding required for liberation. The extent of intimately locked types, which no reasonable amount of grinding will liberate, can also be evaluated. Mineral coating conditions, free particles of a deleterious mineral, and free particles of a valuable mineral held in floculated clusters of gangue are other features that can readily be observed. In some instances, visual examination may show that the problem is not one of locking. Photomicrographs illustrate the variety of beneficiation problems for which the ore microscope is applicable. These problems and their resolution demonstrate the importance of the instrument and show the value of close coordination between the mill dressing engineer and the ore microscopist.

Natural petroleum gas occurring in the oil-bearing reservoirs is found to exist either as free gas associated with the oil and/or in solution in the oil. In some virgin fields practically no free gas is encountered under the reservoir conditions of pressure and temperature, although in other fields a considerable section of the "pay" horizon is occupied by free gas. In other words, a given oil field may or may not have a gas cap before the exploitation takes place. However, when the reservoir pressure is reduced to a point below the critical saturation pressure by withdrawals of fluids from the producing formation, the gas dissolved in the oil inevitably begins to come out of solution and becomes free gas. Under the controlled methods of production and drilling, a portion of this gas is produced with the oil to the surface and a portion of it remains within the reservoir to accumulate at higher structural levels toward which it migrates by virtue of its low specific gravity. The rate of growth of a gas cap in a given structure depends primarily upon the rate of decline in the reservoir pressure. If the rate of pressure decline is rapid, the gas cap likewise will grow rapidly. On the other hand, shrinkage in the gas-cap area was noted in some fields in which reservoir pressures wereincreasing. Determination of Gas-oil Contact and Thickness of Gas Cap The gas-oil contact can be conveniently located in the process of drilling a well and by electrical logging. However, very little can be found in the petroleum literature concerning methods of predetermining gas-oil contacts in producing reservoirs. Therefore, the writer feels justified in describing briefly a simple, workable, and inexpensive method of determining gas-oil contacts and outlining the limits of gas-cap areas in a field where such knowledge may be essential for efficient production and development operations. The method involves the determination of the following data: (I) Structural data, such as the depth or elevation of the top' of "pay" horizon; (2) reservoir pressures; (3) tubing and casing pressures at the well head; (4) static oil-pressure gradient; (5) static gas-pressure gradient. These data can be secured with a minimum of expense, inasmuch as the

Coal as mined contains varying quantities of inorganic components (mineral matter) which, on combustion, produce the residue known as ash. It has long been realized that the weight of this residue does not equal the weight of the mineral matter originally in the coal, because of the chemical changes that take place during the ashing process. Moreover, the ordinary ash analysis presents the ash as a mixture of oxides with little or no clue to the identity of the mineral species originally present in the coal. It is only for pyritic sulfur that an attempt is made to determine a mineral component. So far as the authors are aware, there are practically no experimental data in the literature as to the percentages of the different mineral species present in coal. The oft-quoted table of Marson and Cobb1 cannot rightly be considered as data, since the authors merely state that the table "shows the probable forms in which these ash constituents exist in coal." In view of the attempts to calculate analyses and determinations of the calorific equivalent of coal to the mineral-matter-free basis, as well as the importance of the mineral species in clinkering, combustion and coking, it seems strange that so few data are available on this phase of coal technology. For example, numerous empirical corrections for use in the scientific classification of coal have been suggested to compensate for the losses from the mineral matter during ignition of the coal to ash. These include multiplication of the ash percentage by various factors such as l 1/10 and 156, the use of the Parr unit coal formula (1.08 A + 22/40 S, where S = total sulfur) as well as certain modifications of the Parr formula that attempt to correct for the organic sulfur present in the coal. Primarily, this report presents the results of direct efficiency tests which were conducted on the 200-hp Coal-Pak, hot water generator, No. 3 unit, at the Otterbein College heating plant in Westerville, Ohio. Also included is a comparison of fuel consumption of the old plant with that of the new plant, a comparison of efficiencies obtained by the indirect method on a 300-hp Coal-Pak, and the cost of gas vs coal to show the savings effected by the latter. Tests were conducted with ten different bituminous coals selected by Mr. S. A. Frye, business manager at Otterbein College. The coals, of ten different suppliers, from four different states and eight different seams, represented competitive products economically available to the heating plant. The tests were conducted by the usual plant personnel which consisted of the plant superintendent and two assistants. No outside supervision of any kind was given during the tests. The tests were made from Dec. 13, 1960, through Mar. 4, 1961. During this period, 300.03 tons of coal were burned in the No. 3 unit. This tonnage represented 25.5 pct of the total coal requirements for the 1960-61 season. Operation during the period was typical for the comfort heat load which the plant supplies. Of the 78.12 operating days, the boiler was on bank or holdfire 14.31 days, or 18.32 pct of the time. The length of individual bank periods varied from 2 hr to three days. Run periods varied from about 2 hr to 7.26 days. DESCRIPTION OF PLANT AND HEATING EQUIPMENT The new Otterbein College heating plant, completed in the summer of 1957, is located in a 50x50 ft boiler room on the lower level of a combination maintenance building and heating plant. The building is situated away from the main college complex on a hillside, which allows for on-grade delivery of coal to the three bunkers. The bunkers are located directly above and connected with the individual stoker hoppers. Fig. 1 shows an in-plant view of the Coal-Pak installations. The No. 3, hot water, unit is at the extreme right. The heating plant consists of three 200-hp Coal-Paks. Unit No. 1 is operated at 4 psi and carries the steam heating load of 14,000 sq ft EDR (steam) installed in two buildings. Provision has been made to convert these buildings to hot water heating at some future date. Since the unit under maximum load conditions operates only at about 50 pct steaming capacity, a heat exchanger was installed to convert steam to hot water. Thus, during light loads in mild weather the unit can be employed more efficiently to supply both steam and hot water and eliminate the need for operating either of the two hot water units. Units No. 2 and No. 3 serve a hot water heating circuit for a large group of 21 buildings of the College. These boilers deliver hot water at temperatures up to 200°F to the various buildings through distribution lines in tunnels. The present calculated maximum heat loss for the College is 15.195 million Btu per hr. The Coal-Paks have individual design capacities of 6.700 million Btu per hr. Table I lists the design date for the Coal-Paks. The No. 3 unit was chosen as the test unit, primarily because of its bunker location at the far end of the delivery ramp. Because of this location any excess coal above bunker capacity could be conveniently stored and isolated from the adjoining bunkers. Each bunker has a capacity of 30 to 35 tons of coal. EXPLORATION for deep-seated orebodies in the Silver Belt area of the Coeur d'Alene mining district is complicated by meager surface expressions of diagnostic criteria, lack of knowledge of the significance of specific alteration phenomena, and the great expense involved in the exploration for ore shoots, the tops of which often occur near sea level elevation or below and as much as 4000 ft or more below the surface. Except for the early studies of Ransome and Calkins in 1903 and 1904,' little geological work was done in the Coeur d'Alene district for many years, and it is only during the last 15 to 20 years that complete and careful geological mapping has been applied to most of the mines in the area. Much early information, which now would prove invaluable, is lost in hundreds of miles of caved and inaccessible mine openings not mapped by mining geologists. In more recent years mining geology has become a tool of greater use in the district, and some measurable progress is being made in the accumulation of observations that are adding gradually to the knowledge of ore deposits in the district. The recognition of alteration phenomena and related features by Hoyt S. Gale3 in 1935, followed by the work of Shenon and McConnel in 1936-37,4 changed many of the concepts formerly held and opened the way for more critical study and mapping of alteration effects. Mapping of these effects has been in progress for several years but no well-organized, careful, and complete laboratory study of the alteration has been made by mining companies or by government agencies. Recently, Thomas Mitcham of Columbia University has been occupied in the collection and study of specimens carefully selected from several producing mines in the Silver Belt as well as from several prospects exhibiting alteration effects. Mr. Mitcham and the writer have discussed some of the preliminary results of his investigations, which indicate that definite and interesting material is forthcoming from his studies. Work of this kind, aided by careful observation by district geologists, should advance the knowledge of the environment of Silver Belt ore shoots and establish additional criteria for recognizing meager shallow expressions of deep-lying orebodies. Structural details in the Silver Belt area are extremely difficult to decipher on the surface because the area is almost completely covered by a deep mantle of surface debris and soil. A dense growth of small trees and buck brush adds to a geologist's difficulties. Often large areas reveal only scattered small outcrops with great intervening areas where the underlying formations must be deduced from small altered rock fragments. Some considerable success in obtaining surface information has come from bulldozer roads and cuts in selected areas. As this type of work receives more attention, knowledge of the surface expressions of formations, alterations, faulting, and veining is expanding and giving more reliable information to guide deeper development. Lack of diagnostic marker beds in the district contributes to a geologist's difficulties in determining fault displacements. In the Silver Belt, known commercally important sulphide orebodies commonly are associated with siderite and quartz gangue. Some of the veins at shallow horizons above productive ore shoots are composed of quartz with light-colored carbonate minerals such as calcite, ferrocalcite, ferrodolomite, ankerite, and carbonates with variable amounts of manganese. The relation of these carbonates to commercial orebodies is a problem offering possibilities for research. Shallow exposures of veins composed of quartz and the light-colored carbonates, often with some associated barite, grade into quartz and siderite veins at deeper horizons. The vertical range of these carbonates has been partially established for some veins, but no reliable method has been devised for predicting where the change in a vein may take place. Careful observation and analysis of carbonates may make it possible to predict more closely where the change to siderite may be expected. In 1926 Shannon5 pointed out some of the characteristics of the carbonate veins of the district and included a few chemical analyses. Some of the Silver Belt ore shoots have small commercial outcrops, and very shallow development of some properties has led to the opening of small ore shoots." Several small ore shoots developed at shallow depths have not been explored at deep horizons, and some important ore shoots with no commercially significant exposures at shallow horizons have been developed. The greatest problem of the mining geologist working in the Silver Belt area is to find the all-important link between the very meager shallow expressions of mineralization and the rich ore shoots that may be found below. To develop criteria for use in the recognition of the weak upper expression of ore shoots, the experience of past development programs must be relied upon heavily. The investment of more than a million dollars in the exploration for such ore shoots requires some reliable criteria if these ore shoots are to be found. Management needs some assurance that the risk involved is justified by well-developed and acceptable geological inference. The richness of some of the ore shoots found thus far has contributed greatly to the justification for a bold approach, but many negative results of blind exploration programs would lead eventually to extreme caution on the part of management. Fortunately, recent experiences of development programs have been quite successful. It is hoped that added knowledge. of the environment of Silver Belt ore shoots will contribute greatly to the sureness of approach toward their development. Pyrophyllite is a hydrous aluminum silicate (A1²Si4O10(OH)²)1 that, occurs in both the foliated and the massive forms. The foliated variety resembles talc in that it has a greasy feel, a pearly luster, perfect basal cleavage, and usually is white, although in some deposits apple green, gray, brown, russet, and nearly black specimens may be found. The massive deposits of pyrophyllite yield pearl gray to light tan aggregates, some of which are so friable that they may be crushed with the hands into a fine gritty powder. Frequently specimens of the massive variety are studded with crystals of radial structure. The mineral has a specific gravity of about 2.7 and a hardness of 1 on Mohs' scale.' The chemical composition of commercial pyrophyllite reflects the mineralogy of the deposits, which, according to Stuckey12 contain pyrophyllite and quartz, together with chloritoid, sericite, and a few other minerals of negligible importance. The latter, he says, ('are noticed in but small quantities to the extent they might occur as accessory constituents of an igneous rock or as products of regional metamorphism or weathering. . . . Quartz is abundant everywhere except in the very best grades of pyrophyllite." Analyses of specimens from several deposits are listed in Table 1, showing that the silica content varies from 57 to 73 per cent and the alumina from 22 to 33 per cent. Oxides of iron and the alkaline metals are collectively present, with one exception, to an extent of about 1 to 1.5 per cent. Sources At present, North Carolina is the only commercial source of pyrophyllite, although the mineral has been found in small quantities in many parts of the world. The North Carolina deposits are in the "Carolina Slate Belt," which traverses the center of the state in a southwesterly direction. This belt varies from 8 to 50 miles in width. BEGINNING Thursday, July 16, the National Broadcasting Co. is broadcasting from 6:30 to 6:45 p.m., over its nationwide network and possibly also by short wave a series of eleven radio programs dealing with the contributions of engineers to the prosecution of the war. The series is being arranged and sponsored by a committee of representatives of the national engineering societies, R. L. Sackett, chairman. The committee began its deliberations before Pearl Harbor and had scripts under way on blackouts, bombs, and damage to structures. The declaration of war emphasized the importance of the proposed radio program. The National Broadcasting Co. and the Office of Civilian Defense enthusiastically endorsed the committee's proposal and have been generous in their help and approval of scripts so far submitted. Controversial matters are included in the broadcasts and changes will be made when requested by O.C.D. up to the minute that a program goes on the air. In this way the latest and authoritative information will be given.

(San Francisco Meeting, October, 1911.) I. THE FRITZ ENGINEERING LABORATORY. TEE Fritz Engineering Laboratory was built under the direction of John Fritz, and presented by him to the University. A view of the building, looking east, is shown in Fig. 1. . The building was started in 1909, and completed in 1910, although all of the equipment was not placed until later. Mr. Fritz gave his personal attention to the details of construction and equipment, and it was his custom to drive over every day to the University from his home in Bethlehem, and spend some hours watching the work, offering suggestions, making changes, and planning new work. The result is a building and an equipment which embody his practical ideas. The laboratory structure is of the steel mill-building type, of light-colored brick, 91 by 114 ft., of which a section is shown in Fig. 2 and the floor-plan in Fig. 3. The steel frame carries the roof and traveling crane-way. Ample light has been provided by numerous windows in the side and end walls, in the clerestory, and by a skylight, 84 ft. long and 9 ft. wide, in the north roof. The main aisle of the building is 49 ft. 2 in. between centers of crane-columns, and has a clear height of 40 ft. The remainder of the width is taken up by two side aisles, 18 ft. high. The laboratory consists of four sections: (1) A general testing-section, containing the testing-machinery, a small machine shop, and an office; (2) a cement-testing room; (3) a room for making and storing concrete test-specimens; (4) a hydraulic section.

Iron-silicon alloys have had a great influence, in many ways, in modern industry. Silicon steels have been used almost exclusively for the construction of electrical machinery, but have also become an important material for structures which benefit by the high tensile and yield strengths of this material. In elaborating on the early history of work done on iron-silicon alloys, Greiner, Marsh and Stoughton1 went back as far as 1808, and pointed to Berzelius as the first producer of ferrosilicon. During the last twenty years some very important contributions in the form of studies of the iron-silicon system, as well as of the physical properties of these alloys, have been published. In consideration of the brit-tleness and poor machinability of alloys containing more than 5-6 pct Si, commercial interests have stimulated the research done on iron-silicon alloys, but mainly in the range of 0 to 6 pct Si. Yensen2 has shown the influence of im- purities, such as carbon, sulphur and phosphorus on the magnetic properties of 2, 4, and 6 pct Si alloys. Corson3 extended his investigation of physical properties to approximately 32 pct Si, and attributed the brittleness of the high-silicon material to the particular constitutional features of the alloys. Though mentioned earlier in the literature, the effect of nitrogen on crystal growth and magnetic permeability of iron-silicon alloys has been demonstrated recently by Morrill4 and Rostoker,5 respectively. In all the above quoted investigations, except that of Rostoker,5 sand or chill casting processes were employed for the preparation of samples. A major advantage of the powder metallurgy process is that it does away with time-consuming machining in many applications. The powder metal industry is always interested in pro- ducing a finished product employing a material which has presented considerably greater difficulties in manufacture by other methods. Steinit26 described preparation and testing of various Fe-Si alloys which were produced by the powder metallurgy process for the manufacture of armatures for small electric motors or generators. While Steinitz investigated alloys up to 6 pct Si, Rostoker5 went as high as 9 pct Si. The author7 previously discussed the diffusion of iron-silicon compacts containing 6 and 10 pct silicon. It is the object of this paper to study the progress of diffusion occurring in iron-silicon alloys by electrical resistivity measurements. All samples were prepared by pressing and sintering of compacts. Iron, silicon, and Fe-Si powders of various mesh size and compositions were employed to obtain test samples. It was assumed that complete diffusion had been obtained when the electrical resistivity reached a constant value characteristic for that particular alloy. To this end, electrical resistance measurements were used to follow the progress of alloying under various conditions.

SINCE Honda and Murakami1 in 1918 proposed their constitutional diagram of the carbon-free iron-tungsten system, considerable effort has been expended by several investigators in attempts to define more positively the structural features of the alloys. The existence of an intermediate phase corresponding to the formula Fe3W2 (68.7 per cent W) was proposed from evidence of a purely metallographic nature by one of the present authors2 in 1926. Since that time the identity of this phase has been confirmed by Arnfelt3 and by Takeda,4 both of whom employed X-ray methods as well as the microscope and the chemical analysis of isolated microconstituents. According to Arnfelt, Fe3W2, as crystallized from the iron-rich melts at a temperature above 1450'C., contains by analysis 68.7 per cent W. The lattice of this phase is characterized by trigonal symmetry. Arnfelt, moreover, proposed a second intermediate phase formed at some temperature between 1450° and 1000° C. by a peritectoid reaction involving Fe3W2 and the iron-rich solid solution. A melt containing 25 per cent W was cooled to 1000° C. and heated for. 100 hr. The precipitated tungsten-rich constituent was separated and found by analysis to contain 62.6 per cent W. This composition agrees closely with that represented by the formula Fe2W (62.2 per cent W). Diffraction patterns from the concentrated precipitate showed a hexagonal unit cell. Takeda confirmed the data of Arnfelt regarding Fe3W2 but was unable to detect Arnfelt's second intermediate phase. While Takeda. failed to describe in detail the treatments employed, he stated that in alloys containing 40 per cent W which were quenched after heating at various temperatures between 1200° and 1450° C., no evidence of the second phase (Fe2W) was observed either in the microstructure or in the diffraction patterns of isolated residues. He therefore considered the existence of this low-temperature hexagonal compound as disproved.

To THE average person, the purport of the items and figures on the balance sheet of a mining company are hazy and the real financial condition of the company is cloaked in obscurity. It is also likely that the satisfaction of the stockholder in his investment, as well as the determination of the prospective investor, rests more on the reputation of the company, his confidence in the management, the stated earnings per share and the dividends paid, than on a comprehension of the information contained in the balance sheet. The balance sheet of any company at best can only closely approximate the true financial condition as of a given date. Any item of asset, except cash, can probably be altered if another's viewpoint is applied. It is difficult and expensive to drill and explore an orebody to determine the entire tonnage of ore therein. Those inherent difficulties render it practically impossible to prepare an absolutely correct balance sheet of a mining company. It is possible, however, to present the facts of a mining company more intelligently and comprehensively than is usually done. With this in mind, a balance sheet of an imaginary mining company is submitted, with supporting schedules. The same fundamental principles hold true whether we consider a large or a small company. Less complexity is involved in dealing with the affairs of a smaller company. Therefore, for this purpose, the assumed company operates but two mines and a smelting plant. It has been deemed advisable to introduce the features of the operation of a mine acquired prior to March 1, 1913 and one after that date. The presentation therefore is concerned in one mine with the appraisement as of March 1, 1913 and in the other with the appraisement by reason of discovery. A consequential factor pertains to dividends paid from depletion reserves and therefore free of surtax to the stockholders. While supporting schedules, when necessary, give details of certain items on the balance sheet, it seems desirable to give further explanations with respect to some of them. This seems to be important because some mining companies do not treat the items as indicated on the statements submitted.

The present work represents a review of our intestigations into the X-ray spectra of solids, which have been carried out by us along two lines of upproach: 1) St@ of the electronic structure of high -rnelting compounds of transition metals; 2) stzddy of the interatomic binding forces by the fine structure of absorption spectra under varying temperature and concentration conditions. With this in mind, int>estigations hare been made into the emission and absorption spectra of the K-series of atoms of transition elements in alloys and compounds. In the problem concerned with the electronic structure of high-melting compounds of transition metals, considerable importance is attached to the question of ascertaining the role played by 3d4sp electrons of metal and 2p electrons of metalloid in the formation of chemical bonds and of giving, on the strength of this data, an explanation of the properties which seem to be contradictory at first sight: good conductivity inherent in metals and high brittleness and high-melting characteristics typical of covalent compounds. Over the last few decades this question has attracted the attention of many investigators whose studies were devoted to this type of compound. Many works, both of theoretical1-3 and experimental4- l5 nature , have contributed much to the elucidation of the physical character of the phenomenon referred to. Alongside the investigations in the field of electric resistance, Hall effect, paramagnetic susceptibility, electronic heat capacity, and the temperature of transformation into a superconducting state, we should particularly emphasize the studies on X-ray spectra, which have played a significant role in the development of the zonal theory for high-melting compounds. This fact has become highly evident after the theoretical calculation of the energy spectrum has been made and the density of states curve in Tic, TiN, and Ti0 has been plotted by Ern and Switendick3 who used the method of augmented plane waves. Correlation of the results of the theoretical calculation of the band structure in the compounds listed above with the data obtained by X-ray spectroscopy studies showed that X-ray spectra can be a source of valuable information on the electronic structure of high-melting compounds within a wide range of ener- gies. It is well known that X-ray emission spectra basically give a direct picture of the occupied excited states above the Fermi level of a solid (valence band, conduction band) and that the absorption spectra (region of initial absorption) give a similar picture of states corresponding to the unoccupied levels near the Fermi surface. THE past seven years, and 1937 in particular, have witnessed the return of New Jersey iron mining to a place of importance. Following the World War period, little mining was done for several reasons. The properties were operated by small merchant furnaces whose demand was not sufficiently large to warrant large-scale methods with their attendant low operating costs. Under those conditions, the ore produced could not compete with that from the Great Lakes. However, when on Nov. 1, 1.929, the Alan Wood Steel Co., of Conshohocken, Pa., leased the Scrub Oak and Washington properties at Mine Hill and Oxford respectively, they made radical changes in the mining and milling processes which greatly reduced the cost of production and pointed the way to a renewed interest in mining in New Jersey. The following factors have been advanced as influencing the reopening of New Jersey mines:

Heat-resistant alloys of the higher nickel and chromium ranges have been empirically developed through the practical experience of the past two decades to a position of significant industrial importance. Few quantitative metallurgical data have been published, however, that could be related directly to engineering specifications and design. Inadequate information led to the inauguration, in 1934, of a research directed toward a better understanding of the properties and performance of these steels at temperatures between 1400° and 2000°F. Investigation was concentrated upon the 26 per cent Cr:I2 per cent Ni type, which owes its extensive application to an excellent combination of economy, strength and surface stability at elevated temperatures. The requirements of the oil-refining industry have been prominent in influencing the scope and evolution of the program. Creep strength at the maximum allowable deformation ranges has been employed to evaluate the merits of these alloys. Permissible elongation rates vary from 1.0 per cent in one million hours for turbine blades to I .o per cent in ten thousand hours for tube supports and heating-furnace equipment. Throughout this paper, the limiting creep stress (L.C.S.) for a given temperature has been defined as the stress that will produce a uniform elongation rate (stage 11) of one per cent in ten thousand hours as extrapolated from rates per hour for tests of less than two thousand hours duration. Certain current specifications require a minimum L.C.S. of 1600 lb. per sq. in. at I800°F., of 3600 lb. per sq. in. at 1400°F., and include a tensile acceptance test at room temperature, after aging for 24 hr. at 1400°F., as a measure of embrittlement in service. An elongation of 4 per cent is considered satisfactory for general use, while a minimum of 9 per cent is prescribed on occasion. Many differences of opinion concerning the properties and performance of these alloys appear to result from their sensitivity to unappreciated variations of chemical analyses which, for example, may change their L.C.S. from 3500 to 350 lb. per sq. in. at 1800°F. Within broad chemical limits, it is possible to balance the six or more important elements present to attain desirable properties with a number of different combinations. One method for adjusting the composition has been described under the sponsorship of the Alloy Casting Institute,' in which, by maintaining a substantially austenitic* alloy, optimum creep strength and minimum tendency to embrittle after aging are expected. Unless, however, the limits are undesirably close, it has not been possible to ensure a moderate range of strength and of ductility by any chemical specification alone. There is a definite need
