The Gulf Coast of southern Louisiana during the year of 1940 was subjected to an extensive exploration and development campaign, as a result of which 16 oil fields and about 38 new producing sands were found. Although this record of discovery appears in keeping with the rate of 1939 actually in amount of new proven reserves, it may fall short of that of the previous year. Only five or six of the discoveries rated as first-class or important fields at the close of the year. The most prominent new fields opened during the year were Neale field in Beaure-gard Parish, the West Cote Blanche field in St. Mary Parish, the Stella field and the West Bay field in Plaquemines Parish, and the Lake Salvador field in St. Charles Parish. There were many important oil-sand discoveries in proven fields, such as in the Bayou Perot field, the Golden Meadows field, the Iowa field, West Lake Verrett field, and the Venice field. During the year, 1047 weUs were drilled in southern Louisiana, of which 768 were completed as oil-producing wells, 17 as gas wells and 262 as dry holes. The Neale field in northwest Beauregard Parish is considered one of the most important discoveries of the year. The f~eld centers around the north half of sec. 26, 'Y.3 S., R.I I W., just north of the town of Neale. It was discovered by the Atlantic Refining Co., using reflection seismograph to locate the structure. Production was found in the second well drilled in the Wilcox sand on the downthrown side of a fault. The structure is known as the "Tepetate" type, being similar to that of the well-known Tepetate field. There were 12 oil wells and 3 dry holes drilled during the year. The Wilcox sand in this field occurs between 8350 and 8400 ft. and averages 30 ft. in thickness. The West Cote Blanche Bay field, in West Cote Blanche Bay, St. Mary Parish, is a 1940 discovery by the Texas Company, credited to reflection seismograph exploration. The oil is from two sands occurring at 3110 to 3140 ft. and from 4950 to 5020 it. Four wells were drilled during the year, three oil wells and one dry hole. The deepest hole drilled reached 9491 ft. without encountering salt or dome material. In Plaquemines Parish, south of New Orleans, the California company has a new field known as the Stella field. The sand was found at a depth of 7485 ft., and 5 ft. of perforations made a well capable of producing 486 bbl. of oil in 24 hr. through a 9.is-in. choke. The oil is 42" gravity. The discovery well was drilled to a total depth of 10,258 ft. and other producing sands were indicated. A good field appears assured, although only one well was completed within the year. The Lake Salvador field, in the center of Lake Salvador, St. Charles Parish, gives promise of being one of the most important discoveries of the year. The discovery well was perforated at 9775 to 9800 ft. making 850 bbl. of 33.7° gravity oil daily through a 1/4-in. choke. DRY cleaning, or pneumatic separation, is not, strictly speaking, a recent discovery. Among the archives of the Patent Office may be found many patents dating back as far as 1850 which cover early attempts to separate materials of varying specific gravity or of different shape by means of air. Hundreds of patents covering this art have been issued, which may be roughly classified into four general groups, as follows: 1. Stationary devices with pulsating air currents. The separating surface is usually riffled and air is supplied by bellows or compressors. This group also includes air jigs, which have been used rather extensively. 2. Stationary devices with continuous air currents. These submitted the material to a continuous current of air, either horizontal or vertical. Chaff is blown from wheat by such a device. 3. Reciprocating or vibrating devices with pulsating air. A small group in which the pulsating air is supplied by bellows and some motion provided in the separating surface to move the stratified material to various discharge points. 4. Reciprocating or vibrating devices with continuous air supply. This is by far the most important group and all recent developments have been along this line. All of the above groups involve the stratification of material by air and include none of the dry methods that use other principles, such as coefficient of friction, magnetism, etc. Air Stratification In all of the above groups of air separating devices, the same phenomena are found as exist in water concentrators; that is, free settling will be found in some and hindered settling in others, with a complex action on the reciprocating tables similar to the wet tables. The experimental value of the settling ratios of particles in air has never been determined but, following the formulas given in Richards'

Although the pressure to meet the heavy demand for lead still took precedence over new metallurgical developments in the field of roasting, smelting, and refining of lead in 1948 there nevertheless has been considerable activity in the experimental development of new processes and improvements as well as plans for the modernization of many plants both here and abroad. Increasing labor and material costs have stimulated the trend to greater mechanization, revamping of flow sheets, and construction of larger units wherever possible. Although there have been many serious labor stoppages in the United States, Mexico, and Europe, labor supply has improved in most plants even if it has fallen off in efficiency.

Twins were propagated into large, well-annealed crystals of a, iron-phosphorous and a, iron-molybdenum solid solutions. Strain fields caused by interaction of these twins were made visible by precipitation. These strain fields can be explained by assuming that transmitted and reflected plastic waves are created when a twin strikes an obstacle with high velocity. The twin front itself can be regarded as a shear wave that may be able to develop a one-dimensional shock front. The occurrence of {WO} fracture by the reflected stress is also discussed. The described effects were not found when twins propagated at lout velocity into disturbed crystals, for example, into crystals previously deformed by slip. DEFORMATION twinning leads to shearing of a crystal lattice under external load. The shear appears to be homogeneous over a large number of crystal layers. In a iron, shear occurs on the (112) planes and in the <1ll> directions. The formation of a twin proceeds by the movement of partial dislocations that change the stacking at the twinning plane.l, In the bcc lattice, this partial dislocation can be created by dissociation of a sessile a/2[111] dislocation that lies in the (112) plane: Cottrell and Bilby&apos;s spiral mechanism can explain the homogeneous shear, but has not been proven experimentally. Nevertheless, this mechanism can explain the possible high velocity of formation of a twin. In Cottrell and Bilby&apos;s model, as in other models of twinning or phase transformation, a much higher energy is required to spread the first stacking fault than to add new layers by further movement of the partial dislocations. The dislocations will therefore become accelerated proportional to the difference between the stress, tN, to nucleate and tp to propagate the twin. It has been assumed3,4 that tn is the stress required to make two partial dislocations of apposite sign pass for the first time. After the first layer of new stacking has been formed, the maximum stress is TN=Gb/4pd where G is the shear modulus, b is the Burgers vector of the partial dislocation, and d is their perpendicular spacing so that the amount of shear is S = b/d. From this formula, a value of 25 kg per mm2 has been estimated for twinning in Zn3. The measured values are smaller, but local internal stresses may help to provide the necessary stress. OUR present-day geological surveys show that 36 of our States are underlain with bituminous coal, covering a total area of 496,709 square miles. The North American continent possesses 69 per cent of the world&apos;s coal reserves, with the United States alone having an estimated 55 per cent. The American coal reserves, in tons, are calculated to he about 3,500,000,000,000 tons, of which we have exhausted about 1 to 1 1/2 per cent. If this coal were mined at the rate of the 1918 production-a record output of 579;000,000 tons-it would not be depleted for 4,000 years. The more easily accessible and high-grade coals would obviously be consumed much before this; some estimates are 100 years. The natural progress of the nation&apos;s industries up to 1910 encouraged on every hand the development of new mines, especially where cheap and easy access to coal measures was coupled with short hauls to the consumer. Over-development resulted, which is perhaps today one of the fundamental causes for the many difficulties faced by the coal industry, which is highly competitive; about 70 per cent of the production cost is labor. In oral discussion at the Columbus midyear meeting, September 26, 1949, these pertinent questions were asked: Was a satisfactory separation of metal and matte obtained? The matte was quite fluid and in most cases the separation was satisfactory. Were the mattes chlorinated after aging? The mattes were stored in sealed glass mason jars, and chlorina-tion experiments made after standing for several weeks gave satisfactory results. Was ferric chloride volatilized? Most of the iron content of the matte was converted to ferric chloride. However, because of the low chlorination temperatures used (150" to 250°C) the major part of the ferric chloride remained with the residue. Undoubtedly, some ferrous chloride was also formed, because of the reducing conditions within the reaction vessel, but no effort was made to separate it from the ferric chloride. Could the reaction be stopped before making metallic iron? No attempt was ever made to stop the reaction before making metallic iron. Generally, 20 to 60 pct of the iron in the charge was obtained as metallic iron which could be readily separated from the matte. In certain cases, metallic iron was dispersed through the matte in the form of globules, which could be removed by magnetic separation. Could other sulphides, i.e., calcium sulphide or sodium sulphide be used in place of iron sulphide? No other sulphides were investigated. It was felt that titanates of calcium and sodium would be formed should these sulphides be used to replace the pyrite. What were the sulphur volatilization losses during matte smelting? In the course of this laboratory investigation, a rather wide variety of variables was introduced from highly oxidizing to reducing conditions and various ratios of pyrite, rutile, and coke. These and other factors all have a definite bearing on the sulphur losses. In general, the higher the sulphur in the charge the higher were the sulphur losses and the percentage of titanium in the matte decreased. With sulphur additions more nearly the theoretical amount, the sulphur losses averaged approximately 10 to 15 pct. With a higher percentage of sulphur on the charges, the losses were in the order of 15 to 30 pct.

DAVID WHITE,* Washington, D. C.-This paper is very timely since the Philippine Islands are presumably open to the enterprise of the American driller, whereas much of the territory in that part of the world is closed to us. The United States has ambitious plans for the operation of a great merchant marine, which is to be oil burning in the main, and it takes but a glance at the world map to see the strategic advantage of oil supplies in the Philippines for such marine operations. It is a little difficult to understand why more attention has not been given to the Philippines, in spite of the difficulties attending development in these islands. A number of American oil companies are, I believe, at the present moment taking an interest in the possibilities of the Philippines. Important factors in the formulation of opinion regarding the importance of the oil deposits of the Philippines, as brought out by Mr. Pratt,1 are the point of view and the breadth of experience of the examining geologist. The average oil geologist, whose experience has been mainly in the Appalachian region, the Mid-continent, or Louisiana, or possibly even in California, on seeing the narrowness of the basins, the closeness of the folding, and the presence of igneous rocks here and there, would be likely to draw unfavorable conclusions as to the possibilities of the Philippine Islands. Geologists visiting that region should be familiar with the geological conditions of oil occurrence in Japan, Formosa, the East Indies, or in the Baku district, and their conclusions should be formulated with the knowledge and understanding of the occurrence of oil in those regions rather than in the United States.

Feldspathic deposits occur widely throughout the United States, but North Carolina, California, Connecticut, and South Carolina accounted for over 80% of the total domestic feldspar output for the year 1973.1 Pegmatites and granites constitute the major feldspar reserves of the United States, 2 and in addition, feldspar is produced as a byproduct by firms whose major products are spodumene and mica. 3 Feldspar flotation is practiced in the United States, Mexico, Finland, Norway, West Germany, Japan, and the USSR. According to the US Bureau of Mines estimates, the production of feldspar in the United States and rest of the world were 704,000 and 2,514,000 t, respectively. Feldspar is principally used as a flux in making glass, pottery, porcelain, enamel, tile, and other ceramic products. In recent years, the domestic feldspar industry is faced with a number of problems. As a result of increased cost of energy and the introduction in 1972 of new legislative programs relating to air, water, and noise pollution, land-use restrictions, and mined-land rehabilitation, the production costs have increased. Apart from the increased cost of operation, an operational problem exists with the feldspar producers in North Carolina, especially those in the Spruce Pine area. This problem is concerned with the use of hydrofluoric acid in the feldspar flotation. Feldspar producers in Spruce Pine, NC, have been discharging process waste water into the North Toe River. The mill waste water contains active fluoride ions. Fluoride in excessive concentrations is undesirable in waters used for drinking. It is stated that water containing 0.9-1.0 ppm fluoride will seldom cause mottled enamel on children&apos;s teeth; and for adults, concentrations less than 3-4 are not likely to cause endemic cumulative fluorosis and skeletal effect. Although the literature on this subject is rather confusing and inconclusive, the inference that concentrations over 4 ppm may affect bone structure is clear. According to the recent Federal Register,4 maximum fluoride level of 1.4 ppm at 79°-98°F is considered to be adequate and safe for the protection of health of the consumers. The EPA and state environmental agencies have accelerated their drive to reduce water pollution on a faster schedule. By 1977, the EPA specifications for maximum contaminant level of fluoride ions in the discharge waters of feldspar milling operatins is expected to be reduced to 2.0 ppm. The other problems of using hydrofluoric acid are the following: toxicity, hazards of handling and storage, and high cost as compared to other inorganic acids (almost 16 times the cost of sulfuric acid). In order to reduce fluoride levels in mill discharge waters, mining companies have taken the following steps: I) Recirculating a part of their mill water. Even though recirculation of mill water seems to be a novel method of reducing fluoride contamination of the discharge water, there are certain operational and handling problems. 2) Conducting research on the treatment of fluorides in mill waste water. The technology of treatment of fluoride ions has received considerable interest in the recent years. A recent research report5 estimates that the cost of fluoride ion removal to meet the present specifications in the feldspar industry is approximately $0.25/t of ore processed, and about $0.50/t of feldspar produced. At the request of the feldspar producing industries in North Carolina, the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Minerals Research Laboratory has taken up a research program directed towards overcoming the fluoride ion pollution problem. After a close study of the operational, technical, and economic aspects of feldspar flotation, it was decided to attempt to replace the conventional hydrofluoric acid process. Conventional Feldspar Flotatin Using Hydrofluoric Acid Since the inception of the feldspar flotation process using hydrofluoric acid by O&apos;Meara2,6 the process has achieved a great commercial success. In the conventional flotation separation of feldspar-quartz, hydrofluoric acid is used to suppress quartz and activate feldspar, and a long chain amine salt (acetate or chloride) is used as a collector. The bulk of amine collectors used in current feldspar operations are applied as the water-soluble acetates of the free-base amines. These products are pastes or waxy solids which are available in a range of acetic acid neutralization levels generally 50 to 100% neutralized. In spite of the problems mentioned in connection with the use of hydrofluoric acid, this process is extremely stable with respect to changes in the process variables. With the exception of a few operations, alaskite and pegmatite are the major sources of feldspar.7 In the flotation treatment of a pegmatite that contains iron-bearing minerals (heavy minerals), mica, feldspar, and silica, a logical order of removal presents itself considering the following:8 1) Mica is readily floated by an amine collector in a pulp pH 3.5. Some iron-bearing minerals will usually respond to amine collector in acid circuit with the mica concentrate. 2) Since iron minerals tend to occur invariably in the feldspar concentrate, it is desirable to remove most of these prior to feldspar flotation. A fatty acid or a petroleum sulfonate collector used in this flotation step in acid circuit will float iron-bearing minerals. 3) Using hydrofluoric acid to maintain pH of 2.5, an amine collector employed in a final step will float feldspar away from silica, usually leaving the latter in the tailing as a high-grade silica concentrate. The problems connected with the flotation separation of feldspar-quartz arise due to the similarities in their chemical structure. Therefore, any reagent system that is likely to succeed in feldspar-quartz separation should have adsorption affinity towards one of the minerals and depression effect towards the other mineral.

Plain carbon steels with 0.48 and 0.95 pct C were quenched and tempered at 705°C to produce carbide dispersions with spacings on the order of 1 p. The morphology of the structure consisted of a carbide-dislocation network. The strengthening due to the dispersion was found to vary linearly with M-½ where M is the mean free-ferrite path determined by the entire network. No preyield microstrain preceded the upper yield point. After prestraining, the lowest stress at which dislocation movement could be detected was 104 psi; this frictional stress was independent of the dispersion and prestrains up to 6.5 pct. The Cottrell-Petch equation for grain-size strengthening was used to discuss the dispersion strengthening in this investigation. The results support an impurity mechanism for the upper yield point rather than one based on the Johns ton- Gilman theory. IT was pointed out by Gensamerl that the mean free path in the matrix is the important variable which controls the degree of dispersion strengthening. Gensamer&apos;s data on steels showed a linear relationship between the yield point and the logarithm of the mean free-ferrite path. The first theory was by Orowan,2 who suggested the mechanism of dislocations bowing between particles, with the resulting relationship that where a is the yield point, P is the distance between particles, and G is the shear modulus. The Orowan equation applies to that range of dispersion where P is large compared to the particle size and the particles are not coherent, so that the matrix is essentially free of internal stresses. As was pointed out by Orowan, there are different degrees of dispersion which, in turn, will influence the strength-controlling mechanism. However, in this investigation, we wish to confine ourselves to the region of coarse dispersion, where the Orowan mechanism should, intuitively, be applicable. It was soon evident that the data, which existed at about the time that the Orowan theory was proposed, did not agree with the Orowan equation in that the actual strengthening was always greater than the theoretical predictions. Thus, Fisher, Hart, and pry3 modified the Orowan theory by suggesting that the Orowan process took place in the microstrain region preceding macroscopic yielding and the subsequent, rapid work hardening in the form of residual dislocation loops around the particles largely determined the observed macroscopic yield point. The F-H-P theory stated that the increment of strengthening due to the work-hardening mechanism was proportional to f3/2 where f is the volume fraction of the precipitate. F-H-P used data by Shaw, Shepard, Starr, and Dorn4 on A1 3-5 pct Cu to support their theory. Roberts, Carruthers, and Averbach5 were the first to make a microstrain study of dispersion strengthening, and they found that for steel the Gensamer relationship was obeyed. Hayman and Nutting6 suggested that in the case of tempered steel 1) the ferrite grain boundary was the primary obstacle and 2) the carbide particles simply formed part of the grain boundary obstacles. They found that the strength varied as G"" where G is the ferrite grain size. Turkalo and LOW&apos; determined the structure of quenched and tempered plain carbon steel using a replica technique; they concluded that the carbide particles did not necessarily lie in the ferrite grain boundaries. When they defined the mean free-ferrite path as being determined by both particles and the ferrite path boundaries, their data obeyed the Gensamer relationship. Meiklejohn and skoda8 showed that the strengthening from iron particles in mercury was a function of the particle size and the distance between particles. Dew-Hughes9 explained the Meiklejohn and Skoda results by the following theory: 1) grown-in dislocations which surrounded the particles were produced by the thermal stresses during the time the material was cooled to the testing temperature, and 2) the observed strengthening was associated with the cutting of the grown-in dislocations by the glide dislocations. Ansell and Lenel10 proposed a theory in which the glide dislocations pile-up or surround the particle until the number of dislocations in the pile-up is sufficient to yield or fracture the particle. The resulting theory says that the yield point varies as p-1/2, where P is the distance between particles. The Ansell-Lenel theory is almost identical to the

Modern high speed bucket wheel excavators (BWEs) can dig materials which power shovels can&apos;t handle without blasting. Yet these machines are not used in any large, open pit ore mines in the United States. American mining has been slow to use the wheel&apos;s special capabilities of high production volume at low cost, due perhaps to a traditional familiarity with shovels and draglines and/or the lack of data of BWE operation, design and cost. Of course, shovels and draglines can not be replaced by BWEs in all cases, but under suitable conditions bucket wheels can out-perform other conventional excavators and simultaneously permit significant operating savings. The latter aspect will become increasingly important to American mining men because as more low to medium grade orebodies are found in regions of thick overburden, better and cheaper ways of uncovering them must be developed. Typical of such areas are the thick alluvial fans of the Southwest and the glacial drift areas in northern regions. Much of this material would handle well with a wheel excavator without blasting, although ripping might be necessary in some cases.

With the exception of the mentions of coal in Illinois in the period 1660-1680, already referred to, the first coal found in the United States was in the James River, Virginia, field. In 1699 a large tract of .land above the present city of Richmond was allotted for a settlement of French Huguenots by the colonial, government, near the present Manakin, about fourteen miles above Richmond. They soon found coal, tradition says it was uncovered by a hunter pulling out a small tree in a. steel) bank near a stream, and Colonel William Byrd, F.R.S., the most prominent man of his day in the colony, wrote to the Colonial Council of Virginia, May 10 and 11, 1701: "The 10th of May, last., I with Coll. Randolph, Capt. Epes, Capt. Webb, &c., went up to the new settlements of ye French Refugees at ye Manaken Town.... We went tip to ye Cole, w&apos;ch is not above a mile and a half from their settlement on the great upper Creeke, w&apos;ch, riseing very high in great Raines hath washed away the Banks that the Coal lyes bare, otherwise it&apos;s very deep in the Earth, the land being very high, and near the surface is plenty of Slate.", Some of the Frenchmen were evidently familiar with the use of coal, as on May 22, 1702, "David Menestrier a black smith and one of ye french Refugees Inhabiting at Luciana Petitioning his Excellency that he may have leave to use ye coal mines lately discovered there for his forge his Excellency by and with ye advice of ye Council loth hereby give Leave to ye said David Menestrier to take what coales he shall want. out of ye said Coal mine for ye use of his forge according to ye Prayer of ye said Petition."2 There was some uncertainty about the grant of these lands to the Huguenots which caused the request for leave to use this coal, as a Virginia patent in its usual form allowed the owner to mine all minerals excepting gold and silver, which were subject to royalties for the Crown. After the visit to the coal above mentioned, "Wm. Byrd, understanding the land had not been granted to the French, took out a patent for 344 acres, including the same, (the coal) which patent was dated October 20, 1704".3

The briquet plant of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Co., at Lansford, Pa., has previously been referred to.&apos; It has passed the stage of experiment and now rests on a foundation practically and financially sound. The purpose of this&apos; paper is to explain how success has been attained, and to set standards for the development of hard-coal briquetting which may eliminate future failures. All the conclusions are based on actual results, avoiding speculation and theory. Up to three years ago, the L. C. & N. Co. used coal-tar pitch as a binder in making hard-coal briquets. The plant operated with a monthly output of 300 to 600 tons and was unable to meet its own expenses. Naturally, no one was satisfied, especially as the ideals of a smokeless briquet were still unrealized. Then came the Dutch oil process, introduced in this country by the General Briquetting Co. of New York. This process uses as binder a small percentage of heavy residue of petroleum, which, being liquid, permits great economy of handling; it also did away with the most objectionable fumes of the former briquets. This oil2 is not absolutely smokeless; heating the fresh fuel to red heat liberates some low-volatile hydrocarbons, yielding a white smoke which is not objectionable. On the other hand, this oil adds to the briquet about 7 per cent. of volatile matter, giving the product a heating capacity equal to that of the best free-burning anthracite coal. The average silt used in the manufacture of these boulets averages 16.5 per cent. chemical ash, corresponding to 12,000 B.t.u. per pound of coal. The Hydrolene used as binder runs about 17,500 B.t.u. per pound, and approximately 7 per cent. of it enters into the mixture, hence 12,000 X 0.93..........................11,160 B.t.n. 17,500 X 0.07.......................... 1,125 B.t.u. The theory for unsteady radial flow of gas, as simplified by Aronofsky and Jenkins, has been reviewed and compared with actual well performance. This study indicated that the theory should be modified by the introduction of an empirical "rate of flow" function "Y(q)". The expansion of the theory on the flow of gas to include a Y(q) term bridges the gap between the theory of unsteady-state flow of gas and actual gas-well behavior. Apparently, the Y(q) term is a function only of the rate of flow for a given well. The completion factor or skin effect is associated with the Y(q) function in such a manner that at least two or more sets of drawdown or pressure build-up tests are needed to separate the Y(q) function and the completion factor. Since the Y(q) function used in this report represents an energy loss dependent on rate of flow near the well-bore of a gas well which is in addition to the loss required by Darcy&apos;s law, the Y(q) function is related to the exponent of the back-pressure curve for a gas well. Techniques and equations are presented which permit the estimation of stabilized and "short-time" deliver-abilities. INTRODUCTION The published theory of radial unsteady-state flow of gas through porous media may be divided into papers1-" which use Darcy&apos;s law as a premise and other papers4-7,16-10 which recognize that Darcy&apos;s law may not hold for flow into gas wells. Miller8 compared theory based on Darcy&apos;s law with actual gas-well behavior and concluded that flow into gas wells deviates from Darcy&apos;s law. Houpeurt4,5 in a thorough investigation of flow into gas wells concluded that the flow rate into a gas well is proportional to the difference between the squares of upstream and downstream pressures elevated to a power between 1.0 and 0.5. Houpeurt also concluded that the deviation from Darcy&apos;s law is caused by irreversible, kinetic energy exchange between the flowing gas and the porous media. Tek9 presented a complete evaluation of the flow problem in gas wells. Several investigators state that the inclusion of gas compressibility into flow equations based on Darcy&apos;s law does not begin to explain the flow problems suggested by gas-well behavior. For many years, natural-gas engineers have realized that gas wells by actual test exhibit behavior which cannot be explained entirely by Darcy&apos;s law. Many tests on gas wells have indicated that a value of 0.85 for the exponent in the back-pressure equation is a fair average for many wells. However, Darcy&apos;s law either for steady or unsteady-state conditions indicates that the exponent should be 1.0. The purpose of this paper has been to examine this deviation from Darcy&apos;s law and to present a reasonable mathematical means of evaluating the deviation. The method presented in this paper combines previous theory with an empirical function to provide a description of gas-well behavior. All equations in this report are for constant terminal-rate-of-flow conditions. While present methods of testing wells usually are not based on this concept, they are believed to approach the constant terminal-rate conditions closely in many tests. However, several gas wells were tested by holding the rates of flow constant in order to approach more closely the constant terminal rate of flow; the results confirm the concepts presented in this paper. A model is discussed from which the work of adhcslon .tor liquid transition metals on aluminum oxide surfaces can he calculated, A close-packed (00011 oxygen surface on A12O3 is assumed with two different types of surface sites: one type involving metal-oxygen bonds and the other man der Waals into actions. The work of adhesion is thus expressed as the sum of these two bonsding free energies. Calculated works of adhesion for nickel, titanium, chromium, and zirconium on sapphire agree well with the experimentally determined quantities. The model is extentled to the calculation of the work of adhesion and shear stress required to remove a thin metal film from a sapphire substrate and is in good agreement with experimental values. The obsewed dependence of the work of adhesion on the free energy of oxide formation of the metal is shown to also provide an interpretation of the tittle dependence of thin-film adhesion. THIS paper presents a model for the type of bonding which occurs across a metal-A12O3 interface. The model is used to explain the results of two types of experiments in which such an interface exists: 1) the adhesion of thin metal films on Al2O3 substrates and 2) the wetting of A12O3 by liquid metal drops. The adhesion of thin films to various substrates has been the subject of a variety of investigations.&apos;-&apos; Benjamin and weaver3 and Bowie,6 using the scratch test developed by Heavens,10 studied the adhesion of metallic films to glass substrates. Their observations for noble-metal film adhesion agree well with an adhesion model involving a van der Waals type of bonding between the film and the substrate. For films of metals whose free energy of oxide formation. ?F°f, has a negative value. Benjamin and weaver3 and Bowie6 found a time-dependent adhesion with an initial value that can be interpreted in terms of van der Waals interactions but a larger terminal value which was related to ?F°f, Karnow-sky and Estill7 deposited films on sapphire at elevated temperatures and noticed no time dependence of film adhesion but a similar correlation with ?F°f. Because of the kinetic problems associated with thin-film adhesion it is desirable to examine adhesion in an equilibrium system. The wetting behavior of liquid-metal drops on Al2O3 provides such a system. Systems of this metal-ceramic type have been studied extensively.11 Humenik and Kingeryl2 have measured the wetting of A12O3 (and other substrates) by several metals and have pointed out that the wetting ability of these metals increases with increasing values of -?F°f. It is thus seen that thin-film adhesion and metal wetting on A12O3 are both related to the tendency of the metal to react with the surface oxide ions of the Al2O3 substrate and, because of this, both phenomena should be explainable by an appropriate model for the metal-Al2O3 interfacial bonding. In the sections that follow, wetting and adhesion data on A2O3 are reviewed and a model is presented by which these phenomena can be interpreted. ANALYSIS OF WETTING EXPERIMENTS In an equilibrium system involving a liquid-metal drop on a solid Al2O3 substrate, the work of adhesion, WAD, is defined by the Dupre, equation as WAD = ?s + ?L -?sL [1] where ?s and ?L are the surface free energies of the solid substrate and the liquid drop, respectively, and ?sL is the interfacial free energy. The work of adhesion is the work required to separate a unit area of the solid-liquid interface into two surfaces. The work of adhesion is usually determined from a sessile-drop experiment in which yL and the contact angle, ?, are measured. The Young-Dupr6 equation is then used to calculate WAD Wad = ?L (1+ cos ?) ACURSORY glance through the literature on the subject reveals that the ablest minds in the land are devoting themselves to the great question of labor, of which employment is one of the fundamentals. Volumes have been written and the end is not in sight. Employment management is today about in the position that efficiency was 15 years ago. During the early days of the war, and perhaps for a year or so before, labor was plentiful. As the war progressed and Europe drew on us for munitions, employers began to compete with one another for&apos;, all, classes of labor. Labor was difficult to obtain, wages rose, the labor turnover increased, and employers began to install employment departments, welfare plans, and all sorts of schemes, but the labor efficiency dropped. As the war progressed, greater and greater production was demanded. New factors were introduced each day. The government, labor unions, industrial councils, all tended, it seemed, to make the situation almost intolerable. Wages rose to fantastic heights, the cost of living rose higher and higher, and the efficiency dropped still further.

SAN DIMAS, in the State of Durango, Mexico, on the frontier of the State of Sinaloa, is the centre of an extensive and rich mining region, which has been exploited for over a hundred years; and the patio process for working silver ores has there attained the highest perfection of which it is capable. Local modifications have been engrafted upon the underlying principles of the process, but, as a whole, the San Dimas practice so fully illustrates its typical capabilities, that I have undertaken to describe its workings in the hope of lightening, to some degree, the labors of my professional brethren who may have occasion to visit Mexico." As is tolerably well known, the patio process, like all other systems of free amalgamation, is not successful with ores containing more than a trace of zinc or lead, the presence of zincblende being especially obnoxious. Iron and copper in small quantities are not particularly disadvantageous. The process succeeds very well with all sulphide ores which do not contain much more than a trace of arsenic and antimony, provided the tailings are concentrated, although, of course, it is best adapted for free milling ores. For suitable silver ores that contain small amounts of free gold the process is still a good one, but where the gold is combined with sulphurets, a considerable and even an excessive loss is inevitable. Hitherto the Mexicans have submitted to this loss, but, since the introduction of American mills, they are gradually abandoning the patio process in favor of the other. The San Dimas ores have a gangue of quartz and feldspar. They are composed principally of silver sulphides, with some chloride and

John Duer Irving, who left his post as Professor of Economic Geology at the Sheffield Scientific School, New Haven, Conn., to join the Eleventh Regiment of Engineers shortly after the declaration of war, died in France, July 26, 1918, from an attack of pneumonia. Through the initiative of Mr. Benjamin B. Lawrence, a memorial service to Captain Irving was held at St. Paul&apos;s Chapel, Columbia University, on Sunday afternoon, August 4, which was&apos; attended by members of Captain Irving&apos;s family, and about four hundred of his friends from Columbia, Yale, the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the Association of the 11th Regiment of Engineers. Professor James F. Kemp delivered the memorial address, and has prepared for the Institute the following account of Captain Irving&apos;s life, Professor Kemp and Captain Irving having been associated on the most intimate terms for a number of years. , The war has brought home to friends and kin in the western shores of thc Atlantic many losses whose suddenness has the shock of a blow. Many more will follow, but none can leave a sharper sense of regret than the news that the keen and productive mind; the inspiring teacher; the successful and considerate editor, the fine, true man and friend had all passed away when John Duer Irving made the final great gift to the service of his country, in the cause of decency and right. In the closing days of July, the cable brought the tidings that toward midnight on the twentieth of the month pneumonia had proved too great a tax upon one already worn by excessive labors. John Duer Irving was born in Madison, Wis., August 18, 1874. His father, Roland Duer Irving, was at the time professor of geology, mineralogy and metallurgy in the State University of Wisconsin.&apos; Roland . Irving, the father, had entered Columbia College in 1863, but trouble with his eyes compelled him to suspend his studies in the classical course in his sophomore year, and to replace study with some months of life and travel in England. Ultimately his eyes became stronger, and he entered the School of Mincs, completing the course for the degree of Engineer of Mines in 1869, with the third class graduated. The class of eleven contained other future geologists. It numbered on its roll Henry Newton and Walter P. Jenney of the early survey of the Black Hills, where John, future son of Roland, was in the course of years to make his doctor&apos;s dissertation, and with its publication his really serious entrance into the profession. Roland Irving was a favorite student of Professor J. S. Newberry, affectionately known to all of his students as "Uncle John," and after some experience in mining and smelting in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, joined the Ohio Survey under Dr. Newberry. The work in Ohio was largely performed during the vacations of the University of Wisconsin, to whose chair Roland Irving was called in 1870. Later, his residence in Wisconsin led to two events of prime importance in the history of American geology. He began the study of the Gogebic iron range and caught the clue to the origin and stratigraphy of the iron ores of all the Lake Superior ranges; and he later undertook the mapping and description of the copper-bearing rocks of the Lake Superior basin. The formative years of the son, John, were passed in a home where the father.
