FOR the proper understanding of the inclusion of certain elements in this review it seems necessary to state the meaning of "rare metals." Certain elements occur in deposits limited in extent or concentration, so that the extraction of the element in relation to market conditions becomes uneconomical. Others may occur in extensive and rich deposits but the reduction of the metal may be difficult and costly. Both these conditions effect the same result, namely, make the metal rare and costly. As an example of the first kind may be mentioned radium and of the second, calcium.

SILICOSIS has been described in a report of the American Public Health Association as a disease due to breathing air containing silica, characterized anatomically by generalized fibrotic changes and the development of miliary nodulations in both lungs, and clinically by shortness of breath, decreased chest expansion, lessened capacity for work, absence of fever, increased susceptibility to tuberculosis (some or all of which symptoms may be present), and by characteristic X-ray findings. ... The disease is divided arbitrarily into first, second, and third stages for convenience of description and possible compensation purposes. At least two distinct types of silicosis are recognized, acute and chronic. The acute form was reported as early as 1713, when a British patent for grinding flint by wet methods was granted because the dry powdered material "proved very destructive to mankind, so much that any person, ever so healthful, working in that business cannot possibly survive over two years."

THE manufacture and treatment of metals comprises operations whose effectiveness depends in large measure upon diffusion phenomena. The significance of such phenomena has, for a few simple cases, long been understood, but in more complex cases it has not been adequately recognized. This paper presents a mathematical analysis of some of the cases in which diffusion leads to the formation of a new phase within the metal, and this analysis provides a basis for interpreting quantitatively many apparently diverse experimental observations recorded in the literature, some of which are outlined in the following pages. OBSERVATIONS RECORDED IN LITERATURE An outstanding instance is the general type of phenomenon in which diffusion of an element into an alloy is followed by a phase change, which most frequently is a reaction (precipitation) of the diffusing element with one or more components of the alloy to form a compound. Thus in certain alloys heated in contact with oxygen not only the usual oxide scale appears but, in addition, beneath the surface, a well-defined zone in which free oxide particles are dispersed with notable uniformity. This zone, commonly referred to as the subscale or zone of internal oxidation, is remarkable in that the visible boundary between it and the unaltered metal is usually sharp. Such a subscale, which appears to have been recognized first in oxidized copper alloys, has been described and studied by C. S. Smith,1 by Rhines,2 and by Rhines, Johnson and Anderson;3 but it appears also in other alloys when they are exposed to conditions that bring about the precipitation of some compound, not necessarily an oxide. Another clear case of this same kind is the diffusion of carbon into a steel containing an element such as molybdenum, chromium, vanadium or tungsten, whose carbide is less soluble in iron than iron carbide, the result being that some part of that element is precipitated as a dispersed carbide. A similar phenomenon may occur on the welding of two alloys each of which contains one of a pair of elements that react to form a compound or a new phase of any sort. But in addition to the precipitation of a compound formed from the diffusing element, other effects may result merely from the presence of the diffusing element. For instance, if homogeneous austenite, nearly saturated with respect to carbon, is heated in contact with silicon in the absence of oxygen, one would expect to find, behind the several iron-silicon phases analogous to a scale, a zone of austenite containing dispersed carbide, because of the fact that silicon decreases the solubility of carbon in iron. As still another example, oxidation of an alloy may result in diffusion toward the surface of one or more of the constituents; for instance, during oxidation of a steel containing an element such as copper, which is less prone to oxidation than iron, there is a notable enrichment of copper just beneath the scale-metal interface. The Blueberry mine is about 10 miles west of Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan. The property consists of about 2000 acres in sees. 3, 4 and 5, T. 47, N.R. 28W. and secs. 32, 33 and 34, T. 48, N.R. 28W., and, excepting one intervening 80-acre tract, contains the iron formation for a length of about 21/4 miles. The property is traversed by State Highway M-28 and is served by three railways, the Chicago & Northwestern, the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic, and the Lake Superior & Ishpeming. The Northwestern transports the ore to a dock at Escanaba; the other railways, to Marquette. Ore for Chicago goes via Escanaba and that for Lower Lake ports, as Detroit, Cleveland, and Buffalo, via Marquette. History The presence of iron formation in this property has been known for many years, and mining operations on a small scale have been carried on intermittently. The Dexter mine, on the SE.1/4 of the NW.1/4 of sec. 3, was worked from 1883 to 1897 and 118,000 tons of ore was mined. From 1907 to 1915 extensive exploration was carried on over the whole of sec. 3, including 79 diamond-drill holes with a total footage of 26,000 ft. The Chase mine, on the NE.1/4 of the NE.1/4 of sec. 3, was developed from this exploration work, but after about 200,000 tons had been mined the property was abandoned. From 1908 to 1910 exploration was carried on by another company on sec. 4, 47-28, including four drill holes with a total footage of about 5000 ft. Much of the drilling on sec. 3 and of the exploration work on sec. 4 are within the present developed area of the Blueberry mine. A general campaign of diamond-drill exploration was undertaken in 1924, and within a year a considerable amount of ore was developed. The Ford Motor Co. then took an option on the property and carried on check drilling and diamond-drill work until the spring of 1926, when enough ore had been developed to warrant the sinking of a shaft

IF the tonnage of merchantable iron ore remaining in the Lake Superior district is divided by the average of the annual shipments for the past 20 years, it will be found that this ore supply will be exhausted in approximately 35 years. This computed exhaustion period would be an indication of the future activities of the iron-mining industry if it were not for the fact that merchantable ore is being manufactured from low-grade ore, of which there is an almost inexhaustible supply in the Lake Superior district. It is true that at present only the simplest of these low-grade ores are being concentrated to any considerable extent, but progress is being made with the treatment of the more complex ores, and now, in addition to 20 washing plants on the Mesabi Range, three plants are equipped with jigs for the treatment of ore that cannot be concentrated simply by washing. The latest addition to the ore-treating plants of the Mesabi Range is a magnetic roasting and concentration plant at Cooley, Minn., in which ore that cannot be concentrated either by washing or by jigging is roasted to the magnetic state and concentrated on magnetic separators. This plant is beginning its third season of operation, and while it is too soon to make definite predictions, there are strong indica-tions that this new process may make commercially possible the manu-facture of high-grade, merchantable iron ore from large quantities of low-grade ore now considered worthless. After the iron oxide contained in an ore has been converted to mag-netite, almost any desired grade of concentrate can be produced, using magnetic-concentration equipment of the types now in general use for the concentration of the natural magnetites of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The conversion of hematite (Fe203) to magnetite (Fe304) is easily accomplished by heating the ore to a dull red tempera-ture in a reducing atmosphere. The reaction is slightly endothermic, and while it requires 200 B.t.u. to heat to 900° F. one pound of hematite ore containing 45 per cent Fe, it requires only 100 B.t.u. to convert the oxide into magnetite. CRUDE petroleum is a mixture of various groups of hydrocarbons and some bodies containing oxygen or sulphur. These constituents possess properties differing considerably one from another and the proportion in which they are contained in the crude oils is also very different. Owing to this complicated composition the practical use of crude petroleum is much restricted. For example it is sometimes used as a liquid fuel. But its employment in this way is uneconomical because various valuable qualities of the individual constituents are not made use of. The rational utilization of petroleum can only be accomplished if the various groups of hydrocarbons are separated. The mixture of hydro-carbons present in the crude oil must be split up in such a way that the hydrocarbons are divided into various groups having certain predominant characteristics and uses. To accomplish such a separation is the aim of the technical refining of petroleum. ORDINARY REFINING BY DISTILLATION AND CHEMICAL TREATMENT Hitherto this has been accomplished by two processes, namely, fractional distillation and chemical treatment of the distillates obtained. Distillation Process The process of distillation consists in the separation of the constituents of petroleum into various fractions, the boiling points of which lie within certain defined limits. The fractions so separated possess certain special qualities in common, which enable them to be applied for specific purposes in practice. For example, we have the fractions known as benzene, illuminating oils, heavy oils, lubricating oils, etc.

INTRODUCTION The selection of mass mining methods is the situation facing not only planners of new operations, but also those involved with cur- rent operations, including the eventual change from open-pit to underground. Increasing ground control problems on many mines, plus a better understanding of dilution and ore loss problems have meant a review of current mining methods and support techniques. Experiments are only successful if conducted in the right mining environment and on the right scale. Mining personnel have been known for their conservatism and will tend to persevere with an established method rather than change; often, hidden costs will obscure the correct economic assessment. An established mining sequence is not necessarily correct in the long term. However, recommendations to change are usually met with opposition because of inconvenience, temporary production problems and the desire for a trouble-free guarantee. In any planning exercise, care must be taken that time and money are not wasted in trying to achieve the unattainable. During the decision-making period, production personnel must be involved, and, if possible, they should visit similar omrations to that proposed. Co-operative production personnel will help ensure success. Descriptions of mining methods are available in technical papers and books, and it is not intended to discuss this aspect, but, rather, the various factors which must be recognised before arriving at a final selection. In another paper presented at this Conference (Heslop and Laubscher, 1981) factors affecting ore recovery and dilution are discussed in greater detail for various cave mining methods. PRELIMINARY CONSIDERATIONS Comprehensive Geological Data. Geological information is available during the exploration stage, but, often, core from exploration drilling is not analysed with the selection of a mining method in mind. Drilling costs are high, therefore the maximum benefits must be derived from this operation. Holes which have not intersected ore may provide data on possible shaft sites, and 35 mm colour slides of core, sound logging and geomechanics classification, will provide a record which can be used with confidence at a later date. Intersections of the various rock types should be kept for future study; for example, is weathering likely to be a problem, bearing in mind that this can be accelerated in the warm, humid atmosphere of an underground mine. The accumulation of data required to select a mining method starts with initial geological work in the target area, whether this be surface mapping or a diamond drill hole. Publications. As technical papers, reports and books are used in the selection of mining methods, an appeal is made to authors to describe the geological environment so that readers can relate to their own conditions. Not enough emphasis is given to the problems experienced and the techniques employed to overcome them. Follow-up papers are seldom written and we should be prepared to discuss our failures. Diagrams are often misleading, as the ideal and not actual situations are depicted. The caved ore/waste interface is not a straight line, and whereas this may not be significant in a diagram of a 200-117 draw height, it certainly is in sub-level caving with draw zones only 1 - 2 m width but up to 20 m high. SUMMARY OF FACTORS AFFECTING THE SELECTION OF UNDERGROUND MASS MINING METHODS (a) Regional rock stresses and mining geometry. (b) The geomechanics rock mass classification of the orebody and surrounding rock mass. (c) Ratio of the surface area of the ore/unpay interface to the contained ore which determines ore losses and dilution. (d) The cavability and fragmentation data of the ore and hangingwall. (e) The mineral distribution in the orebody and its dilution zone.

AT the Park Utah Mine, labor costs of stoping A have been reduced from 30 to 40 per cent. by the use of double-drum hoists and scrapers. The application of scrapers varies with the methods of timbering. In stopes, which must be timbered with square-sets or stringer sets, one method is used; another is used in wide orebodies that can be held open until filling is introduced; and still another in narrow flat veins. Nearly all the oreshoots at the Park Utah lie at less than 50" from the horizontal, and most of the ore is difficult to handle through flat chutes. Proper care is probably the most important requisite for successful scraping, as serviceable equipment can be obtained from several manufacturers. One capable mechanic, therefore, was put in charge of the scraper hoists. He visits every stope daily, oiling hoists and tail1 blocks, inspects all equipment, splices cables and changes "set-ups" when necessary; his pay has been a good investment. The Park Utah now has in use ten double-drum Turbinair hoists, and one Sullivan double-drum a. c. hoist of the same capacity and outside design as the air hoists. The electric hoist is slower than the air hoists and does not pass large boulders easily; it is, however, a very effective machine. The air hoists are fast, powerful and

Shortly after the passage of the Taconite Amendment in Minnesota, several mining companies announced their intention to build new magnetite taconite plants and another announced its intention to augment present facilities. It is clear that Minnesota will enjoy an expanding magnetite taconite industry, but despite the fact that the reserves are large, eventually they will have to be supplemented by oxidized deposits. Furthermore, not all producers have magnetite taconite reserves. Due to the extensive oxidation of most of the western part of the Mesabi Range, there are no large blocks of unaltered magnetite taconite that lend themselves to open pit operations. Unless a commercial process can be developed to concentrate the oxidized, or so- called "nonmagnetic", taconite and semi-taconite, the existing mines operating in the western part of the range will be forced to shut down when the direct shipping, wash and gravity ores are depleted, or are no longer salable, because of their poor quality compared to high-grade pellets. KNOWN PROCESSES COSTLY The enormous reserves of the oxidized iron- bearing formation have offered a tantalizing challenge to metallurgists for many years. In fact, several processes for concentrating certain types of oxidized ore have been successful at both laboratory and pilot plant level, but to date no process for concentrating semitaconite or oxidized taconite has reached commercial fruition. Magnetic roasting, followed by low-intensity magnetic separation1, has shown considerable promise because the high iron recovery makes the ratio of concentration of many of the oxidized ores more favorable than that of magnetite taconite. However, the capital and operating costs are high and, in many cases, a high- grade concentrate cannot be made without resorting to flotation of the magnetic concentrate. Hence, most research groups are investigating alternate methods of concentration with the hopes of reducing the cost.

No one who has visited our Western mining districts, and studied the economical part of the beneficiation of the ores occurring all over that vast extent of country, can underrate the high importance of the above subject. By far the larger number of the districts which contain smelting ores, i.e., argentiferous and auriferous lead, or copper ores, are situated in the Great Basin, that great plateau between the Rocky Mountains on the east, and the Sierra Nevada on the west, almost the whole of which is comprised at present in the boundaries of Nevada, Utah, and part of Arizona. This region is essentially a barren country. The extreme dryness of the atmosphere permits but a scanty vegetation in the plains ; and even in the detached mountain-chains running through it-generally from N. to S., or from N. W. to S. E.-there are no trees found except dwarfed pines and mahogany, at the head of sheltered ravines, and a few cottonwoods and willows, which fringe the insignificant streams, before the water sinks in the arid plains. Nearly all the mountain-chains in this region are rich in silver ores. That class of these ores which is adapted to amalgamation, and rich in silver, has been worked with profit for more than ten years. But before the advent of the transcontinental railways, mining was restricted to these ores alone, and the consumption of fuel could be met with the scanty supply of forest trees in the immediate vicinity of the mining districts. Since, however, the Union and Central Pacific Railroads have brought the Great Basin nearer to the commercial centres of the East and the Pacific coast, thus reducing the expenses of freight and labor materially, other silver deposits, containing poorer ores in greater abundance, have been rapidly taken

The delay time for single crystals of iron, zinc, and pre-strained aluminum was measured under conditions of high-speed deformation. The delay time of aluminum was found to be affected by the orientation of the crystal. Under the dynamic conditions employed, tile calculated "activated volume" term appears to be very small for the three metals studied. IN a previous paper,1 it was shown that under dynamic testing conditions at 78° K, there was a delayed yield in single crystals of aluminum and copper which had been cold-worked prior to testing. The experimental results also indicated that the delay-time effect was not due to the interaction of dislocations with impurity atoms or vacancies, but rather to a dislocation-dislocation interaction since aluminum which has not been prestrained shows no delay-time phenomenon. In this paper, some data are reported on the effects of orientation on the delay time of aluminum single crystals; the delay time of zinc single crystals saturated with nitrogen and the delay time of iron single crystals also were measured. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Aluminum (99.997 pct) and zinc (99.999 pct) crystals, 1/2 in. in diam and 8 in. long were grown by the Bridgman technique. The iron single crystal was supplied by Dr. R. Maddin. The zinc crystals containing nitrogen were prepared by melting high-purity zinc in a graphite crucible and the nitrogen was introduced by additions of ammonium chloride. The liquid zinc was then drawn up into glass tubes of 1/2 in. diam and allowed to solidify. The rods were cooled to room temperature before the transfer to the mold for conversion into single crystals. The orientation of all specimens was determined by the Laue' back-reflection technique, Fig. 2 and Table I. To prepare for the delay-time measurements, the crystals were cut with a fine jewelers saw and the ends carefully machined. The specimens then were electrolytic ally polished to remove the cold-worked metal, mounted in a special fixture and hand-lapped. As a final step, the crystals were annealed in evacuated tubes. Specimens of aluminum crystals, Nos. 24 and 26, were compressed 0.5 and 2 pct, respectively, in the direction of the later impact. The zinc specimens were aged at 50°C for 15 min, In the case of iron, only two specimens could be obtained. To obtain sufficient data, it was necessary to resort to a reaging treatment. After each delay-time test, the specimens were aged at 65° C for 100 min. This treatment, according to Clark,2 is sufficient to restore the original delay time. It is believed that although the specimens were plastically deformed approximately 10-4 pct, after each test the delay-time values are reliable. The delay-time measurements were made in an apparatus similar to that described previously.' Single crystals approximately 1 in. long and having a diameter of 1/2 in. were placed in a pendulum which consisted of a bar 1/2 in. in diam and 8 ft long, designed with a crystal holder to accommodate the specimen at low temperatures. The crystal was held at a position 2 ft from the front part of the pendulum. This portion of the apparatus was supported on a fine molybdenum wire. THE first bituminous coal cleaning-plant to use the sand-flotation process1 was placed in operation on Oct. 1, 1925, at the tipple of the East Broad Top Railroad & Coal Co., at Mt. Union, Pa. The general principles governing the design of plants of this type and typical operating results of anthracite sand-flotation units have been previously outlined.2 I will, therefore, confine myself to a description of this particular plant and to some of the elements of design it incorporates. THE ORIGINAL MT. UNION TIPPLE The plant was installed to transfer coal from steel narrow-gage cars of 60,000 and 70,000 lbs. capacity to standard-gage equipment. The coal was hauled some 30 miles from the East Broad Top field. This coal, mined by the Rockhill Coal & Iron Co. and other operators, is a low-volatile slow-coking coal with- ash of high-fusion point. It is normally a high-grade coal that does not contain an excessive amount of free impurities, but it requires careful handling to secure a fair domestic yield, and, naturally, the need for narrow-gage transshipment increases the difficulty of the problem. The narrow-gage cars were discharged into an 8-car track hopper equipped with two feeders passing the coal to two 42-in. apron intake conveyors. Twin units were installed throughout in this original plant, two lump-and-egg shaking screens, two lump picking-tables, two egg picking-tables and two stoker conveyors. The stoker coal was loaded without cleaning. The loading tracks and booms were in duplicate and with the layout as originally installed either unit could be run independently, each unit shipping a different class of coal or both units making the same product.

IN the last two years the E.C.P.D. committees having to do with the inspection of engineering schools for possible accrediting have been concerned with the engineering content of some of the mineral industries courses. Originally the discussion arose with regard to engineering geology, or geological engineering, afterward broadening to metallurgical engineering, ceramic engineering, agricultural engineering, and other branches not pertinent to this discussion. Some members of visiting committees took the attitude that they probably would have to accredit these types of training as included in the engineering group if they met the average standard set by the mining schools, though they questioned -whether they were really engineering.

THE theory of gravitation is based on Newton's law that any two bodies exert a mutual attraction which is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them; i. e., A =KRM/R2 (1) where K is a constant, M and m are the respective masses of the two bodies, and R the distance between them. In the earth's gravitational system, the earth is one of the bodies; the other may be any body within or without the earth. In theoretical dis¬cussions and calculations in regard to gravity, that other body usually is taken as a unit of mass: in the C. G. S. system, a body of one gram in mass. GRAVITY AND LEVEL SURFACES Gravity is defined in geophysics as the force of attraction exerted by the earth, towards itself, on a body of unit mass. The intensity of gravity is usually expressed in dynes of force or in centimeters of acceleration. In geophysical work in America, most commonly it is expressed in dynes (per gram) with the "per gram" understood and not directly expressed. In geophysical work in Europe, most commonly it is expressed in centimeters per second per second (cm./sec.2) and less commonly merely as centimeter-gram-second units (C. G. S.). At sea level, the intensity of gravity amounts very nearly to 980 dynes. The vertical is the direction along which the attraction of gravity is exerted at any point. . In most cases, it is very nearly, but not quite, per¬pendicular to the earth's surface. The path that would be taken by a body falling freely through space toward the earth is vertical at each point and may be spoken of also as "the vertical," or as the line of the vertical, or as a line of force of gravity. At the earth's surface it com¬monly is very nearly, but not quite, a straight line.

The electric arc welding of cast iron has been studied by Braune Lamberton, Schimpke, Kenyon, Gale Manufacturing Co., Wedemeyer Candy, Neese, Miller, Carter, American Welding Society, Namack Lebrun, Achenbach, Jansson, Xochendorffer and others.' The write of this paper has been able to obtain a series of cast irons, from gray tc white, without using cast-iron electrodes but by coating on wrought-iron bars mixtures of carborundum (Sic) and graphite (C). In this work, he found the curious phenomenon of barium carbonate.

WHEN lead production began to recede from the peak productions of 1929 many plants took advantage of the curtailed operations to make necessary improvements and repairs about the plant. There followed a period of adjustment to synchronize production and demand, which merged in the present period of marking time. The lead smelting and refining industry has produced little that is new during the past year except in what might be called makeshifts, which have been introduced to make operation at fractional capacity profitable.
