KEECO has developed the Silica Micro Encapsulation (SME) technology for the treatment of acidic, metal-laden waters. Utilizing a silica-based chemical formulation that entails chemisorption and micro-encapsulation of heavy metals in a permanent silica matrix, encapsulated particles settle quickly and are effectively isolated from the surrounding environment, producing a stable sludge that is characteristically non-hazardous. In a number of independently-verified pilot and full-scale applications (including the Bunker Hill Mine, Leviathan Mine, Wheal Jane Mine, and Meldon Quarry), SME has been proven highly effective. The technology has been featured in a number of mining publications and selected for innovative technology awards.

The International Conference on Sustainable Development Indicators in the Mineral Industries(SDIMI 2003) was held May 21-23, 2003 on the island of Milos, Greece. The objective of this international conference was to assist the mining and minerals industries in their global transition to sustainable development. The main theme of the conference was the development, monitoring and assessment of sustainable development criteria for mineral operations. Emerging technologies were also presented that can assist in the development of criteria and performance indicators.

"Since 2005, longwall coal mine operators in Pennsylvania (US) have been required to collect extensive hydrologic and biological data to document pre- and post-mining conditions of aquatic resources (streams and wetlands) overlying the subsidence control plan areas. Continued operation of the longwall mine is dependent upon empirical data demonstrating that the undermined aquatic resources have either been maintained or restored to an accepted range of pre-mining conditions. This study used quantitative hydrologic methods and comparative biological metrics to examine response of aquatic resources to longwall subsidence at the Bailey Mine located in Greene County, Pennsylvania. This study analyzed data from over 25 miles of streams and over 8 acres of wetlands that traverse the 4,779-acre study area. Hydrologic analysis of flow intermittency suggested that there are variable degrees of change to headwater streams immediately following mining; however, the majority of the effects are reversible through streamflow mitigation measures. Furthermore, the post-mining discharge from streams can be restored to within the range of pre-mining conditions the majority of the time. Biological assessments showed that greater than 95% of assessed stream length has maintained its ability to support benthic macroinvertebrate communities following mining and intervention (i.e., mitigation). Comparative metrics of the benthic macroinvertebrate communities showed that the biological community in 48 of the 50 sample sites is being maintained or restored across both high- and low-gradient streams. The effectiveness of intervention was further substantiated by the similarity in recovery times between streams having no intervention (median = 2.1 years, 95th percentile = 4.9 years) and streams with intervention, when recovery times were measured from the date of the intervention (median = 1.7 years, 95th percentile = 4.7 years). Changes to individual wetlands were observed between the pre- and post-mining assessments, but cumulatively a net gain of 7% in wetland acreage was realized. Hydrologic assessments were used to infer whether there was a potential that streams had been affected by mining; however, the ultimate test of stream recovery is based on biological metrics that establish the relative quality of the biological communities following mining. Overall, the hydrologic balance is being protected and the aquatic life use of streams is being maintained within the Bailey Mine’s subsidence control plan areas."

Although salmonid fishes (including Pacific salmon and trout) have only intermediate sensitivity to copper (Cu) for traditional toxicity endpoints (survival, growth, and reproduction) and thus do not ?drive? the freshwater Cu criteria (e.g., see species-sensitivity ranking in US EPA 2007), Cu concentrations as low as 1 to 2 µg/L have been reported to impair olfaction (the sense of smell) in salmonids in laboratory experiments using dilute fresh water (see references in Meyer and Adams 2010 and DeForest et al. 2011). Olfaction is crucial to predator avoidance, recognition of kin, and reproductive synchronization (Baldwin et al. 2003); and Cu is of general ecotoxicological concern because it can be present in acid/mine rock drainage, industrial and municipal effluents, agricultural runoff, and urban stormwater runoff (Meyer et al. 2007). Therefore, there is public concern that the current regulation of Cu in surface waters is not stringent enough to protect salmonid fishes against olfactory impairment (e.g., OSU 2007; Pearson 2007). Because the toxicity of metals to aquatic organisms is a function of water chemistry [e.g., acute toxicity of Cu generally decreases as pH, water hardness (Ca2+ + Mg2+), alkalinity, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations increase; Meyer et al. 2007], hardness-based freshwater criteria for metals are lower at lower water hardness. The recently-developed biotic ligand model (BLM) explicitly takes into account all four of those water chemistry parameters and the concentrations of other major inorganic cations (Na+, K+) and anions (Cl-, SO42-) to predict the acute toxicity of cationic metals (e.g., Ag, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) to aquatic organisms; and the BLM has been adopted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) to calculate acute and chronic national freshwater criteria for Cu (US EPA 2007). Consistent with observations of Cu toxicity to aquatic organisms, BLM-based Cu criteria generally are lower at lower pH, water hardness, alkalinity, and DOC concentrations. Therefore, although threshold concentrations for olfactory impairment by Cu can be low in dilute fresh waters, the corresponding hardness-based and BLM-based Cu criteria for the same waters also tend to be low. This leads to a logical question: Are Cu criteria already protective against impairment of olfaction in salmonid fishes, thus obviating the need to decrease those criteria even lower to protect against adverse effects to this physiological/ecotoxicological endpoint? Herein, we demonstrate that in all studies conducted to date, the US EPA?s BLM-based freshwater Cu criteria would have been protective against olfactory impairment in salmonid fishes, but the US EPA?s hardness-based criteria would not always have been protective. This distinction is important because all 50 States in the USA still use hardness-based Cu criteria in their water quality standards, and only some of the States allow use of the BLM to calculate site-specific Cu criteria. Additionally, in the absence of empirical results for calibration of a saltwater Cu-olfactory model, we demonstrate that a proposed unified freshwater-saltwater Cu-olfactory BLM predicts the US EPA?s current saltwater Cu criteria would be protective against olfactory impairment caused by Cu in sea water.

The aim of this study is to synthesize hydrated compounds of calcium silicate (tobermorite) using as siliceous source perlite milling process wastes, containing more than 70% of SiO2. Calcium silicate hydrates are mainly used for construction of lightweight building materials, plasters, tiles and filters. The effect of temperature, time and particle size of perlite on the quality and composition of the solid product was studied. The solid products were characterized by X-ray Diffractometry, Differential Thermal Analysis and the amount of Acid Insoluble Residue. The synthesis of tobermorite was per-formed by the hydrothermal treatment of perlite waste with a saturated calcium hydroxide solution at a molar ratio CaO/SiO2 of 1, liquid to solid ratio 10 mL/g and 1% w.t. NaOH addition. Three experimental sets were performed. In the first series of experiments the synthesis temperature was kept constant at 205°C while the synthesis time varied from 0.5 h to 24 h. In the second experimental series the synthesis time was kept constant at 2 h while the temperature varied between 150°C and 245°C. In the third experimental set the temperature was 205°C and the reaction time was 2 hours and two perlite waste size fractions were used, a coarse (d50=18 µm) and a fine grained one (d50=8 µm). Reaction products consisted of semicrystalline calcium silicate hydrate (I) and crystalline Al-substituted tobermorite or a mixture of both. An isomorphic Si4+ ions substitution with Al3+ ions in the hydrated calcium silicate lattice was detected by thermal analysis. The experimental results show that good quality crystalline Al-tobermorite can be produced after 6 hours of autoclaving at 205°C or after 2 hours of hydro-thermal treatment at 225°C. Generally, the in-crease of synthesis temperature or time favors the crystallization of calcium silicate phases and enriches them in aluminum. The use of fine grain size perlite is more efficient for the hydrothermal synthesis of calcium silicate hydrates.

Faults, sandstone channels, and abandoned mine workings present severe safety hazards, disrupt mining, and necessitate costly precautions or discontinuance of operations. In addition to fault detection, mining companies have a need to map discontinuities such as seam thinning and previously mined areas in both longwall and room-and-pillar operations. Initial field tests demonstrated successful generation and propagation of higher order guided wave modes. Theoretical studies indicate potential for improved resolution by sensing small details in the coal seam and roof structure. Controlled-waveform source transducers and specialized detectors are particularly useful to preferentially excite and detect the Love (SH) and Rayleigh-type (P-SV) waves, including the higher frequency modes. The distinct observation of reflections using the transducers in the shear wave mode makes feasible the detection of the water-filled voids.

INTRODUCTION In radon dosimetry diffusion chambers with passive [a]-detectors are now in current use to investigate the long-term accumulated indoor exposure of radon and daughters. For the diffusion chamber developed at Karlsruhe the electrochemical etching technique (ECE) was applied to reveal [a]-particles in polycarbonate plastic detectors. Compared to conventional etching, the main advantages of the ECE are the large track diameter, simple track counting in a single field of about 1 cm2, stability of the latent tracks to humidity and temperature and ability for a long-term accumulation up to 1 year. The electrochemical etching system was designed to etch in one run about 101 foils by using a 200 W high voltage generator. The commercial available radon dosimeter system is applied for a country wide program of measuring radon in dwellings. Because of an increasing interest of radon monitoring in mines, environmental monitoring and personnel dosimetry the properties of several track etch detectors have been studied. In the comparative study, Makrofol E, LR 115 and CR 39 were used in the diffusion chamber to investigate the etching techniques, the relative efficiency, the measurable [a]-energy range, and the counting statistic for the measurement of radon concentration. THE KARLSRUHE DIFFUSION CHAMBER The design of the Karlsruhe diffusion chamber is presented in Fig. 1. The upper part of the chamber is closed by a fibreglass filter to separate radon from aerosols, heavy dust particles and radon decay products. Inside the diffusion chamber [a]-particles from radon and daughters are detected by two passive radon detectors, one on the bottom of the chamber and the other in front of the filter. With the fibreglass filter applied the diffusion time is about 1 minute for radon. Therefore, also short-term variations in the radon concentration are recorded by the track detector. Mainly because of the short halflife of thoron (56 s) only about 7 % of the thoron concentration is expected in the diffusion chamber. Radon monitoring provides the estimation of the long-term accumulated mean value of the radon concentration with a lowest detectable concentration of 0.1 pCi/1 after 3 months accumulation by using polycarbonate track etch detectors, an electrochemical etching technique and track counting in a single field of 1 cm2. The diffusion chamber was optimized for the polycarbonate track detector with respect to chamber geometry and detector position [1]. Table 1 presents data for 3 different diffusion chamber designs. The radon sensitivity of the diffusion chamber depends on the [a]-energy discrimination and the angular response of the [a]-track detector. The difference between foil No 2 and foil No 1 can be explained by an additional plate-out effect of radon daughters on foil No 3. The high sensitivity of foil No 3 compared to that of foil No 2 is caused by an increase of the effective volume and the effective area for [a]-particle from radon and from plated-out decay products, respectively. Additional experiments have been performed in order to investigate the electrostatic properties of the plastic material and the properties of the diffusion filter [1]. The properties of bare a-detectors were compared with those inside the diffusion chamber. In contrast to laboratory results, dust particles deposited on the detector surface or in the environment of the detector obviously affect the reproducibility of the bare detector significantly. After 4 months exposure in dwellings the scatter of 10 dosimeters exposed in the same room exceeds a factor of 3 compared to 15 % for the diffusion chamber. COMPARATIVE STUDY OF TRACK ETCH DETECTORS Detector types and evaluation technique In the comparative study the properties of the following plastic track etch detectors have been applied: - LR 115 from Kodak Pathé, France, is a red dyed cellulose nitrate layer of 13 µm thickness on a 100 µm thick polyester support. The holes appears as bright spots in a dark red background. In an optical microscope counting of through etched [a]-tracks which must penetrate the detector layer - CR 39 from Pershore, England, is an ally1 diglycol carbonate plastic of about 300 m thickness. The normal etched [a]-tracks are counted by an optical microscope and the ECE [a]-tracks by a microfiche reader.

Research on the low-potential hydrophobic state of pyrite with potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) as collector, is reported to help explain and understand the fundamental aspects of the N2TEC flotation process, which was originally developed for the improved recovery of gold from refractory auriferous sulfide ores. Typically in the N2TEC process, air is replaced by nitrogen as the flotation gas, and potassium amyl xanthate is used as collector for the reactive auriferous pyrite particles. The first N2TEC flotation process was commissioned at Lone Tree in Nevada in March 1997 and has been in operation ever since. On the basis of electrochemically controlled contact angle measurements, the low-potential, low-pH hydrophobic state of pyrite has been examined as a function of flotation variables such as pH, gas-phase composition, collector concentration and pyrite potential.

Perhaps the most significant development in China's base metal sector is the discovery of major copper porphyries in northern Jiangxi Province and the adjacent southern Anhui Province. At the center of the new exciting district is the proposed Dexing copper complex, located some 350 km east of Nanchang, the provincial capital of Jiangxi. This project represents China's first attempt to put together a major large-scale open-pit operation, comparable in magnitude to Arizona porphyry operations. With the aid of Fluor Mining and Metals, the Chinese plan to develop a 135-175 kt/d open-pit mine, a matching large-scale mill, and the infrastructure needed to accommodate the big operations. An operation of this magnitude would significantly reduce China's import requirements by some 75%. China imports of the red metal are running around 200 kt/a. Under the direction of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, the Chinese are currently operating a 10-kt/d mine and mill with equipment primarily of Chinese origin. Dexing engineers told ME that they are considering a possible scale-up to 20 kt/d. How this effort will ultimately jell with the major expansion program is largely a matter of conjecture. Fluor Mining and Metals received a $10-million contract in December 1978 to develop a preliminary engineering and design program. While the original plans called for a 175-kt/d capacity complex, the Chinese subsequently decided to scale it down somewhat. The current proposal is around a 135 kt/d, which would in- elude the existing operation, according to Dexing engineers. Completion of the engineering and design phase is expected by March 1980 and a go-ahead decision will likely be made at that time. The value of the engineering and construction contract is estimated between $800 million and $1 billion. At right, mined ore is dumped 150 m down the mountain to a holding pocket below for rail haulage to the processing plant. Below, a Chinese miner tackles the universal problem of hard toes in the pit with a jack leg. Reserves and Early History The Dexing mineralization consists of three principal ore bodies, including the Chushahung on the north mountain, and the Tungchang and Fuchiawu on the south mountain. Combined ore reserves are estimated by mine geologists at 1.7 Gt of 0.4-0.5% copper. As is characteristic of porphyries, the ore contains important associated values of molybdenum, rhenium, pyrite, gold, and silver. There is also some secondary calcocite and bornite with an oxidized capping. Historically, copper was recovered with iron from the pregnant solutions emanating from the Tungchang deposit as early as the Tang Dynasty (700 AD). During the past decade, considerable effort has been made to develop improved flotation strategies for the sedimentary phosphate resources from Florida, particularly the dolomitic phosphate resources. New flotation equipment and alternate flotation strategies have been evaluated. These developments are reviewed for both traditional siliceous resources and future dolomitic resources. Most process strategies involve variation in the reagent sequence and/or the use of depressants/dispersants. Further research and development efforts in flotation technology are needed to increase flotation plant capacity by elimination of the conventional double float process, to improve the recovery of coarse phosphate, and to achieve the desired selectivity with respect to carbonate minerals, particularly dolomite.

Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine is located in Papua, Indonesia operated by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) with approximately 1,500m below surface. The ore body extend 1230m width from northwest to southeast by 300–400m length east-west. The mine currently produces at full production of 80,000 tons per day until 2041. Part of the extension of current active production block and mitigation sits 225 m above the production block 1 (PB1) and 2 (PB2A and PB2B) which located in 2590L, named production block#4 (PB4W and PB4E). As the mining continues at PB1N, PB2A, and PB2B, the cave growth vertically and laterally to south perimeter of the footprint affecting the integrity of PB4W/E footprint. Currently, PB1N and PB2N are in active production whilst PB4E development continues from South against PB1N cave, as can be seen in Figure 1. A slight overlapping between PB1E and PB4E intentionally to promote cave connections between the two caves. Despite low stress model in the PB4E near existing caves, the PB4E cave propagation expected by the large strain and will be propagating in tension failure to the PB1E cave. Hence, designing the drill drives edge and first drawbell location as close as possible to the PB1E cave is necessary to guarantee cave connection. Since PB4 footprint development commenced in December 2021, there have been a substantial cave propagation observed from existing downhole monitoring. As the PB4 footprint designed perpendicular to existing DMLZ PB1 cave, adjustment of the development edge design is necessary to reflect the progression the loosening zone propagation to the South. Final life of mine design for extraction, undercut and ventilation level were decided in October 2023 considering latest update cave (fractured/ yielded) boundary. Numerical model of potential rock mass damage also aids the decision to locate the drift edge design. Predicting the cave progression impact is critical to both production at the existing active blocks and development of the new area. The use of cave shape data from year 2021–2023 gives an insight of the cave shape estimation at the end of 2024 when the undercut drift will be developed. This paper presents actual cave growth of active production blocks and its relative vertical progression impact as the result of drawing in order to plan for acceptable rate and provide mitigation once the minimum acceptable rock mass condition and minimum pillar threshold achieved.

ABSTRACT The pervasiveness of high-fidelity video games raises expectations of quality, detail, and lighting in virtual reality (VR) applications. However, high-quality models of mining equipment and environments are often not readily available, and developers may not be familiar with the latest techniques, such as physically based rendering (PBR). Because a consistent aesthetic is critical for maintaining immersion and controlling visual stimuli in research as well as in training, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) created an asset development workflow. This paper details this workflow, including precision modeling and PBR techniques as well as a rigorous review process. It also describes lessons learned in the creation of photorealistic VR assets. BACKGROUND Virtual reality (VR) describes the simulated experience generated by an assemblage of hardware and software that are used to immerse the user. Over many years VR developers targeted the development of virtual environments (VE) toward various purposes: entertainment, the treatment of phobias [1], rehabilitation [2], and training [3]. A large part of the VE development includes digital assets, where digital assets refer to the non-programmed elements including 3D models, audio, and user interface. Because vision provides nearly 10Mbps of data [4] and accounts for the majority of all sensory input combined [5], a focused effort on asset appearance in VEs is warranted. Furthermore, research has shown that higher-resolution imagery increases search performance and training transfer, necessitating high-fidelity assets [6, 7]. In addition to being visually appealing, it is important that the assets and environment are also dimensionally accurate and consistent in order to elicit appropriate responses from the end users as they interact with and among these items [8, 9]. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have developed VEs and digital assets under several research projects over the course of the last two decades [10, 11, 12, 13]. This work has provided researchers with a strong knowledge base for digital asset development. However, the assets themselves have had limited reuse value. Due to the extended timeframes and limited scope of these projects, the previously developed assets are not consistent in visual quality and dimensional accuracy. Moving forward, researchers wanted to minimize future development time and use of resources as well as adopt new asset development tools and game engine technology. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to document a new asset development workflow including geometry, materials, UV layout, and shader implementation combined with review steps in order to produce high-fidelity simulation assets that are accurate with consistent characteristics, using repeatable methodologies that are well documented.

Health and safety issues are a very important aspect of mining activities. Although the application of scientific research and current technology shields workers from many dangerous aspects of mining, accidents do happen. Many companies and institutions worldwide have committed to a continuous effort to minimize such occurrences. In this study, the health and safety data pertaining to the Greek mining and quarrying industry for the last 3 decades are presented and critically evaluated with respect to number of workers, annual production, etc. Appropriate indices are also calculated regarding the incidence and frequency of accidents. Health and safety issues specific to mining in Greek are also discussed.

The International Tunnelling and Under-ground Space Association (ITA) is a nonprofit organization that represents all aspects of the tunneling and underground space industry worldwide. The United States has had a prominent role in ITA since its 1974 inception. ITA was formed as a result of a worldwide survey conducted in the early 1970s by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Bill Lucke was in charge of tunnels for the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration and was a member of the organizing committee that created ITA. He became a vice president of ITA. Jack Lemley served as President of ITA from 1983 to 1986. Dick Robbins was very active in ITA and served for many years both as a member of the Executive Council and as First Vice President. Harvey Parker has served as President of ITA for the last three years and will serve as Past President for the next three years. Moreover, there are many individuals and companies from the United States that have contributed significantly to the activities and the success of ITA. There have been several active Working Group Animateurs from the U.S. and there have been significant contributions from many individuals as well as companies from the U.S. Several engineers from the U.S. are currently serving ITA in a leadership role. The Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA of SME) is the official organization representing the U.S.. SME Executive. [ ] Director Dave Kanagy and UCA President Tom Peyton were instrumental in the U.S.?s role at ITA during the last few years. Peyton has been the official delegate to ITA. Henry Russell and Christian Ingerslev are both Animateurs of ITA working groups. This article will introduce ITA and its activities. A subsequent article will describe the ITA in more detail and will discuss the significant role the U.S. has played in the development and success of ITA.

This paper focuses on the separation and extraction of lead and zinc from Egyptian ore at the Eastern Desert close to Red Sea. The ore sample contains cerussite, galena, hemimorphite and other impurities. Experimental program includes flotationof galena using xanthate collector and cerussite using oleic acid as collector and sodium silicate to depress hemimorphite tailing. Galena, and hemi-morphite are converted to carbonate with sodium carbonate prior to metal extraction. Lead and zinc are extracted pyrometallurgically at 1050°C and750°C or electrochemically respectively. The overall performance of the applied method amounts to 99.2%. Extraction efficiency of lead and zinc amounts to 98% and 94.5 % respectively. A model assumed that galena and cerussite in the ore are partially oxidized and can be liberated by grinding. Oleic acid selectively reacts with cerussite in a multistep sequence. Preliminary cost estimate shows that the price of the products is competitive to their local market prices.

Recent research has shown that traditional sensitivity, what if and best case/worst case analysis of metallurgical data has the potential to over estimate the value of mining projects. Use of simulations, which rely on the input of statistical information, may provide more realistic predictions of the value of future projects. Actual metallurgical data is used to demonstrate that analyzing the data from a statistical perspective can give insight into completing an optimum amount of metallurgical testing and a mechanism to determine that samples used for the testing are truly representative of the ore that will be processed.

The tremendous engineering advances occurring during this past century are very evident within the boundaries of the Anthracite Section of AIME. The Steelton plant of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, located along the Susquehanna River just east of the Commonwealth's capital at Harrisburg, for more than 105 years has experienced a most dynamic life which has paralleled America's industrial growth. (Figure 1) In June 1865, just after the Civil War, a group of men met to organize the Pennsylvania Steel Company. The war had brought into sharp focus the vital importance of the railroads to the country's expansion. Until that time wrought iron rails were used, and the replacing of track after only several months wear had become an almost unbearable cost. The spirit of free, competitive enterprise and the prospects of a lucrative market compelled these men to form that first Pennsylvania Steel Company and to develop better rail products. Nearly a decade and a half after the US and China established formal diplomatic relations, and two decades after the two countries signed the Shanghai Communique and established commercial ties, the world, and perhaps China itself, has discovered that a wealth of natural mineral and energy resources lie beneath China's soil and directly off its coast. The country's coal reserves and oil and gas potential are well known. Its ferrous and nonferrous metal reserves are respectable and in a number of instances pre-eminent. According to 1981 Minerals Yearbook estimates - more often than not below those now being claimed by China - the country's aluminous metal reserves are about 907 Mt (1 billion st); iron ore reserves are 40 Gt (44 billion st); and copper reserves are about 46 Mt (54.4 million st) of contained metal. In addition, the country has about 10.7 Gt (11.8 billion st) of phosphate reserves, the fourth largest in the world, and 3 Gt (3.3 billion st) of pyrite. China's national Sixth Five Year Plan promulgated in late 1982 ended a stringent three-year retrenchment or readjustment period in which a number of major development projects involving foreign participation initiated in the late 1970s were shelved. The new Five Year Plan is a signal both within and outside of China that things are now moving again, and that major industrial and service sectors are receiving the kind of funding and flexibility they need for expansion, construction and modernization. The new plan's strategy for growth is measured and much less grandiose and frenetic than it was five years ago when China flung open its doors to foreign companies and invited participation in large-scale development projects. Now, the country's reticence to spend foreign exchange to purchase key equipment, technology, and services -a reaction to these projects and the spending they entailed - is clearly on the wane. In China's effort to quadruple its GNP by the year 2000, there is a new willingness to use some of its substantial foreign reserves. In fact, it is projected that 1983 will witness a $1.9 billion deficit, with a $2-3 billion deficit in 1984 and 1985. The following article discusses implications the Sixth Five-Year Plan has for nonferrous metal development in China. It is the first in a series of three articles on Chinese mineral resource development to be published in Mining Engineering over the next few months. The second article will identify specific nonferrous projects underway, while the third in the series will focus on trade and development opportunities for phosphate and potash producers in China. China's Ambitious Plans In the last few months, the exploitation of China's nonferrous resources and development of its industrial processing capabilities have begun to receive increasing attention on both provincial and central levels. Unlike the earlier modernization drive of 1978 when China's ferrous sector - best typified in the Baoshan iron and steel project - got the lion's share of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry's (MMI) energy and resources, it now appears that in some respects the nonferrous and industrial sectors are finally moving out from beneath the dominating shadow of ferrous and getting their own day in the sun. Separation of Nonferrous from Ferrous One clear demonstration of this is the establishment in April 1983 of the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Corporation (CNFMIC). The corporation is composed of 819 enterprises with over a million workers, and also includes 12 nonferrous metal construction companies, eight design institutes, and three prospecting companies. Of ministerial rank, CNFMIC is responsible for the development of both the country's nonferrous resources and its processing facilities. Although closely tied to the parent ministry from which it sprang (i.e. MMI), CNFMIC, at least theoretically, is separate and independent from it. One strong indication that this independence is, or soon will become a reality, can be seen from the fact that the new corporation is not headed by the former MMI officials, not even those who made up the ministry's now defunct nonferrous bureau. Instead, its president Qiu Chunfu is formerly of the State Economic Commission and the China International Trust and Investment Corp. Its general manager Fei Ziwen, an engineer in his early 50s, is from the Jiangxi Province Copper Corp. The new nonferrous corporation appears to be powerful

Paul Y. – SELI Joint Venture had been contracted to build the longest section of the Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme (SSDS) – Stage I. This involved two tunnels under urban and marine areas excavated by high performance hard rock open type TBMs operated from deep shafts. A specific ground treatment program was developed using advance probing and grouting to control water inflow into the excavations. The article describes: the technologies adopted, the experienced problems, the encountered productions and their interrelation with the water inflow amounts, the possible improvement in the technologies for the excavation of the future stages of the same project as well of any other project under similar conditions.
