INTRODUCTION Conceptual design of the first Exploratory Shaft (ES-I) for the Nuclear Waste Repository in Basalt (NWRB) began in July 1981; detailed design began in February 1982, and was largely completed by December (RKE/PB, 1983). The intent was to begin shaft construction by January 1983. The site had been prepared at that time, a construction manager selected and on board, the starter hole excavated and lined, and steel casings were under procurement. Government policy changed, however, and construction was halted before the drill rig started turning. Construction is now planned to begin in 1988. ES-I is a part of the site characterization program for the NWRB. The shaft will be used to develop production data and related information relative to drilling shafts at the site near Richland, WA, and to provide access to the repository horizon for site characterization and testing. The early program called for one shaft and some 330 m (1000 ft) of drifting. The program has since expanded to include a second shaft (ES-II) and more extensive drifting and testing. Currently, both shafts are planned to be 1.8 m (6 ft) in finished diameter, but studies are underway to determine if the second shaft should be larger. The drilling method was selected for shaft construction primarily because it offered a significantly shorter construction period than conventional shaft sinking using freezing and grouting. The finished drilled shaft will be lined with a continuous steel lining. Personnel are safer during construction with a drilled shaft than with a conventionally sunk shaft. The drilling method

Introduction A resource of more than 122 Gt (134 billion st) of minable trona and mixed trona and halite underlies an area of about 3400 km2 (1300 sq miles) west of Green River, WY (Culbertson, in preparation) (Fig. 1). In 1982, the total domestic consumption of soda ash (refined trona) was 6 Mt (6.7 million st) (Kostick, 1983). About 90% of this came from Wyoming trona. This enormous deposit occurs in the Wilkins Peak Member of the Green River Formation that is of Eocene age. This formation is derived from sediments deposited in a large lake named Gosiute. Lake Gosiute occupied the Green River Basin in southwestern Wyoming some 38 to 54 million years ago. The Wilkins Peak Member represents a restricted, evaporite-rich cycle of deposition when the trona deposits were formed. A total of 42 trona beds are known. Of these, 25 are of sufficient thickness and extent to be considered minable (Culbertson, in preparation). The production of sodium compounds from the trona deposits in the Wilkins Peak Member began in 1896 when wells were drilled within the present boundaries of the town of Green River. The purpose of the drilling was for extraction of sodium carbonate brines. Sodium carbonate (sal soda) was removed from these brines at a plant in Green River. Bedded trona was discovered in 1938 in a core from an oil well drilled south of Westvaco. In 1947, the underground mining of trona began. Production has continued from 1948 to date. Currently, five companies are mining trona and producing soda ash from the Wilkins Peak Member in Wyoming. Additionally, Allied Chemical Co. mines and processes trona for Church and Dwight's sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) operation in Green River. Competition in the soda ash industry depends primarily on the efficiency of mining and refining, allowing for lower-cost production. Newer plants and mine designs should increase efficiency. Solution mining holds promise as an even lower-cost method of mining. Employment in the soda ash industry is declining since the newer mining and refining methods are less labor intensive. Declines in employment, however, may be offset as production increases. Due to the large resource, the availability of minable trona should not be a problem for perhaps hundreds of years. Recent advances in digital cameras and image processing allow photographers to produce excellent high-resolution action shots in low light and high contrast conditions commonly encountered underground. Digital photography is often used for construction and inspection documentation for underground structures. Designers, owners, and contractors benefit from quality photographs that document incremental progress and project milestones. Documentation photos serve as a lasting record of as-built conditions, are an important marketing tool, and help the owner build public support for expensive public works projects. When the project is complete, the only mementos that the participants will hold onto are the photographs.

I will talk today about a porphyry copper exploration program now underway in the Amazon jungle in the southeastern part of Ecuador near the border with Peru. The project is unusual for two reasons: first the deposits are of Jurassic age, 153 m.y.o., which is unusually old for porphyry copper deposits and they may be the most significant pre-Tertiary age porphyry deposits known. Second, the district was found only six years ago which makes this the most recent discovery of a totally new porphyry copper district. The new porphyry district, known as the Zamora River Copper Belt, or the Corriente Copper Belt, is a north trending area 50 km long by 10-15 km wide, which is nearly aligned with the axis of the Jurassic age Zamora batholith and with the course of the Zamora river. Gencor in 1994 initiated a regional grassroots gold exploration program based on reconnaissance geologic mapping and geochem sampling which did not find a gold mine, but which identified the San Carlos porphyry copper system in April, 1995. In a later reorganization between Gencore and Billiton the Ecuador project was transferred to Billiton and between the Gencore work and Billiton’s a total of 10 porphyry copper systems were found over the next four years. In the period of 1997 - 1999 Billiton drilled a total of 11,000 meters of wide spaced core holes in the San Carlos, Panantza and Kutukus prospects. In October 1999 Billiton concluded a farm-out, joint venture agreement with Corriente Resources and Lowell Mineral Exploration for additional exploration of the Zamora property. This is funded by Corriente and managed by Lowell Mineral Exploration and a total of 28,000 m of core drilling was completed through August 2001. An immediate result of the Corriente Lowell project was the discovery of potentially commercial ore reserves in two new deposits at Mirador and Warintza. Additional closer spaced drilling was done in the Panantza deposit and additional drilling is planned at San Carlos, in targets related to Warintza, and elsewhere.

Syncrude Canada produces a large part of Canada’s crude oil supply. The company processes about 225,000 bbl/day. The oil produced is used for jet and automobile fuel, home heating oil, plastics and other consumer synthetics. Crude oil is produced through a process of mining, extracting and upgrading bitumen. A rich supply of bitumen is contained in the Athabasca oil sands deposit in northern Alberta. Tailings from the bitumen processing are sent to a settling basin.

One of the main objectives of this study was to evaluate a fine-coal cleaning circuit using an enhanced gravity separator specifically for a high sulfur coal application. The evaluation not only included testing of individual unit operations used for fine-coal classification, cleaning and dewatering, but also included testing of the complete circuit simultaneously. At a scale of nearly 2 t/h, two alternative circuits were evaluated to clean a minus 0.6-mm coal stream utilizing a 150-mm-diameter classifying cyclone, a linear screen having a projected surface area of 0.5 m2, an enhanced gravity separator having a bowl diameter of 250 mm and a screen-bowl centrifuge having a bowl diameter of 500 mm. The cleaning and dewatering components of both circuits were the same; however, one circuit used a classifying cyclone whereas the other used a linear screen as the classification device. An industrial size coal spiral was used to clean the 2- x 0.6-mm coal size fraction for each circuit to estimate the performance of a complete fine-coal circuit cleaning a minus 2-mm particle size coal stream. The ?linear screen + enhanced gravity separator + screen-bowl circuit? provided superior sulfur and ash-cleaning performance to the alternative circuit that used a classifying cyclone in place of the linear screen. Based on these test data, it was estimated that the use of the recommended circuit to treat 50 t/h of minus 2-mm size coal having feed ash and sulfur contents of 33.9% and 3.28%, respectively, may produce nearly 28.3 t/h of clean coal with product ash and sulfur contents of 9.15% and 1.61%, respectively.

Addition of Kastone® peroxygen compound and formaldehyde to cyanide gold extraction process effluents, containing at least 5 mg soluble copper per liter, will oxidize acid-dissociable cyanide to levels less than 0.2 mg per liter, without appreciable oxidation of thiocyanate. Most of the copper precipitates and is removed by filtration of the treated solutions. The treatment can be completed in less than 2 hours when the excess of hydrogen peroxide over the cyanide is about 75-100 mg per liter. The excess hydrogen peroxide destroys residual formaldehyde and then is catalytically decomposed by the copper-containing solids that separate, so it will not interfere with subsequent operation. A pilot plant using this technology has been operated for more than four months at rates from 1-2 gpm. Clear, filtered effluent containing less than 0.2 mg acid-dissociable cyanide per liter has been produced.

Hydrogen is regarded as being a high temperature indicator of spontaneous combustion. It is currently used in underground coal mines to detect advanced heating?s. Previous work has mostly consisted of small scale tests with high air flow to mass ratios. A large-scale test rig has been used to investigate the gas indicators of coal self-heating. In particular, the relationship of gas evolution, the location of its evolution and the temperature at which it is evolved has been examined. It has been found that there are two distinct zones of hydrogen production: one at the hot spot and the other in an oxygen deficient moist zone downstream from the hot spot which is at a relatively low temperature of approximately 100°C. This has implications for the interpretation of mine atmospheres.

The Turin metro alluvium soil is mainly made of large boulders, cobbles and gravel , few sand and almost no fines. This grain size curve is out of the range of application for EPB and Slurry TBMs. In order to bore 5 of the total 7,5 kms of Line 1 tunnel, two specially designed Lovat EPB TBMs were utilised in combination with a systematic non structural pre-grouting of a small volume rectangular slab just above the tunnel section. The same pre-grouting was not however applicable for lack of access on surface in some sections of the remaining 2,5 km of tunnel that had to be bored below important buildings/structures, with under ground water pressure up to 1,5 bar, with curves radius of 180 m only. For these more critical sections it was necessary to study and implement a new technical solution and improve the capacity of the TBM to work efficiently in EPB mode even in this unsuitable ground and overall conditions. After months of studies the selected and adopted solution has been to inject inside the cutterhead chamber, in addition to the almost standard foams & polymers additive mixes, a suspension of limestone powders. This with the scope of compensating the lack of fines of the natural ground with rock powders.

The abandoned Belle Eldridge Mine near Deadwood, South Dakota, is on land controlled by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property. The mine produced primarily lead and zinc during the first half of the twentieth century. The BLM has expressed concern about acidic drainage as well as elevated arsenic levels in tailings and waste rock at the site. The mine site was evaluated for remediation in 1998 and 1999. Recent reclamation and remediation work included substantial regrading of waste rock, removal of material where metal loading were of concern, and re-routing of drainage from an adit. Trenching at the site shoed a greater volume than originally calculated during site characterization. Material was removed to a repository that was constructed at a nearby drainage divide. Because of physical hazards, the BLM has decided to remove some historic structures. However, a search of mine records and an inventory of archival materials were complete to preserve the history of the site.

Although water quality predictions are often made in Environmental Impact Statements (EIS's) as part of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), comparisons between predicted and actual water quality conditions are rarely reviewed. A comprehensive review of predicted and actual water quality conditions was conducted for a number of large U.S. hardrock mines with EIS’s. For mines with large differences between predicted and actual conditions, factors responsible for the deviations, such as characterization and modeling errors or engineering failures, were identified. Recommendations are made for how the NEPA process could be modified to better predict water quality at hardrock mine sites.

In this paper, long-term measurements in five underground mines are presented to demonstrate how these measurements can be applied to stability evaluations and design of underground excavations. These case studies address both the global aspects of strata response to mining activities as well local ground behavior and support loading. The measurements include static (stress and deformation) and geophysical. Case studies quantify pillar behavior, roof-floor deformation patterns, overburden response, and microseismic activities. Large-scale studies quantify the nonuniform nature of overburden deformation and collapse. Local measurements address yield and stable pillar load deformation characteristics, as well as the performance of support systems under combined axial and lateral loads.

The Upper Reach segment of the Northeast Interceptor Sewer (NEIS) is a3.2-km-long tunnel excavated in interbedded marine sedimentary deposits with approximately 40 m of cover. The tunnel was initially classified by Cal/OSHA as “potentially gassy.” During excavation, high levels of hydrogen sulfide and methane were encountered, prompting Cal/OSHA to reclassify the tunnel as “gassy.” In addition, the tunnel excavation encountered an abandoned, 100-year-old water tunnel known as the “Narrows Gallery.” This existing tunnel was completely full of water and under 30 m of hydrostatic head. This paper will discuss the unanticipated difficulties and design solutions implemented to construct a gassy tunnel exposed to high volumes of water.

The Cresson gold deposit is in the southcentral portion of the Cripple Creek mining district in central Colorado (Fig. 1). The deposit is hosted by a series of 32 Ma (Kelley, 1995) felsic to mafic, alkaline volcanic rocks that were deposited in a diatremal environment. Mineralization in the Cresson deposit is structurally con-trolled. It occurs as disseminated and vein type. Gold deposition is closely associated with potassium-pyrite metasomatism and quartz-telluride vein development(Pontius, 1992). The Cresson deposit is owned by the Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Co. (CC&V), a joint venture between Pikes Peak Mining (67%) and Golden CycleGold (33%).

The Brightwater Conveyance System consists of four tunnel segments in three tunnel con-tracts, comprising over 21,760 m (71,400 ft) of pressurized face tunneling in complex glacial and non-glacial soft ground conditions with a large proportion 60 m (197 ft) or more below the ground surface with up to 7 bars groundwater head. This resulted in unique technical challenges for establishing geotechnical baseline values. The process used to develop these baseline values and specifications with regard to the level of risk that the owner, King County, was willing to accept is described in this paper.

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Sept. 22, 2012 when the 2012 class is inducted during a special ceremony in Las Vegas, NV in conjunction with MINExpo 2012. The NMHF&M will induct four men representing the equipment manufacturing, minerals exploration, copper and coal sectors of the mining industry. The diverse cross-section of mining industry giants joining the hall of fame include Glen A. Barton, J. David Lowell, Samuel Newhouse and John Cleveland Osgood. They will join 214 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame at the 25th Silver Anniversary Induction Banquet & Ceremony. These men were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors within their own sectors and across the industry at large.

Image analysis for feed belts and flotation has been used for over 20 years. It has been shown to aid in the modelling and optimization of Sag Mill circuits, and any improvements in the image analysis result in improvements in the model for control. Using a laser to measure the height-profile of rocks on the conveyor has been shown to increase the accuracy of the size classification. We have developed a system using two cameras in a stereoscopic configuration to provide height-profile measurement without the added expense and safety concerns of using a laser. Additionally, we have developed a novel technique for calibration of the system, using artificial intelligence techniques to optimize the model fit by adjusting the image analysis tuning parameters to values resulting in the best classification.

How does SME-AIME cope with profound changes in technology, markets - and most importantly - in employment patterns facing its membership today? This is the question that prompted the Society's Board of Directors to appoint a Long-Range Planning Commission (LRPC) (see ME, Feb. 1984, pp. 118 and 128). This is also the question addressed most particularly by the LRPC's Scope Committee. The Committee started its deliberations by asking such basic questions as "Who are we?" and "What is our business?" The Scope Committee then reviewed the findings and recommendations of other more specialized committees to develop and integrate their concepts of the Society's business for the next 10 years. The policy-making suggestions of the LRPC were reviewed and acted upon by the Board of Directors at its open meeting in Los Angeles on Feb. 26, 1984. At the Oct. 23-26, 1984 SME Fall Meeting in Denver, the Board will again review LRPC recommendations. In answer to the question "Who are we?" the Scope Committee proposed description, which was accepted by vote of the board of directors: . . A technical and professional organization that consists of individual members, namely those mining engineers, metallurgists, geologists, earth scientists, economists, managers, educators, and other professionals concerned with all facets of exploration, production, distribution, and using of mineral commodities. "These mineral commodities include all metals; industrial minerals, including construction materials and fertilizers; coal, oil shales, tar sands, and other mined fuels. Among the earth's mineral resources, only wellpumped oil and gas lie outside the Society's specific purview. "Traditionally, SME members work in the fields of engineering, technology, exploration and discovery, development, construction, mining, quarrying, beneficiation and processing, handling and transport, equipment manufacturing, sales and marketing, data processing, safety, land reclamation, environmental protection, taxation, administration, and management of these elements. "Members practice their professions in industry, in universities and research institutions, and in government. They may be operators, manufacturers, sales persons, contractors, consultants, analysts, researchers, educators, advisors, regulators, or members of supporting staffs. "The members of the Society are leaders in dedication to their crafts, in innovation, and in the pursuit of excellence. Among their numbers they count the most distinguished of engineers, applied scientists, and managers. "The Society is based in the United States, is active on a worldwide basis, and is open to nationals of any country. Certain qualifications must be met for attaining and maintaining membership." Purpose of the Society As to the question "What is our business?" the Scope Committee restated our purpose in light of current practice and the constitution of AIME and the bylaws of AIME and SME. The Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) specification B105.1 “Welded Steel Conveyor Pulleys” adequately defines standard pulleys for most aggregate material handling applications. However, many aggregate applications demand pulleys of higher capacity and reliability than that offered by CEMA pulleys. This paper examines the CEMA Pulley Standard and pulley specifications for aggregate applications requiring greater capacity and reliability than the CEMA Pulley Standard. Higher reliability increases the uptime and has a lower total cost of ownership.

Phelps Dodge’s Morenci copper mine has had six drills, six track-dozers, 16 shovels, two loaders, and 90 haul trucks equipped with either Caterpillar, Aquila, or Modular GPS systems for nearly three years. The Caterpillar Computer-Aided Earthmoving System is an open-architecture system, which allows for inputs to enhance orientation solutions and system functionality. This system has begun a new phase that leads to an intelligent mining system. Optimization techniques of the current system and inputs are reviewed. In addition, some practical issues of implementing new technology in a mining environment have been identified to aid in this new phase.
