The problems associated with outliers and their adverse effects on resource estimation in deep level South African gold mines are presented, and solutions suggested in available literature are reviewed. Traditional Witwatersrand type outlier capping uses the 99th percentile grade as the upper limit, a somewhat blunt approach. The occurrence of high and low grade areas in mining operations and the estimation of resources using geostatistical techniques require that the assumption of stationarity be upheld. Honouring the stationarity of data requires that mining areas be subdivided into appropriately sized and spaced domains. In order to overcome high-grade conditionally biased block estimates, the overly strong influence of extreme grades is mitigated by using naturally occurring grade sub-domains, by identifying outliers within the grade sub-domains, allocating relevant capping limits, and weighting them in a post-estimation process to. Rather than applying a capping value across a domain it applies a maximum cap based on the extreme value and its range of influence; the method also ensures that relevant capping occurs even in lower grade sub-domains. The proposed method for capping outliers recognises that metal contained in high grade chip samples should not be over-capped, and based on the grade of surrounding samples. The post-processing method of capping outliers does not interfere with the kriging equations. The method is simple, elegant, and can be easily applied. An advantage is that the output from the kriging process is not overwritten, allowing for comparison between original kriging results and post-processing results.

Detailed process oriented characterisation on representative samples from plant survey of the slag flotation plant belonging to Aurubis, Bulgaria has been realised in order to evaluate the mineralogical occurrences of Cu, Ni, Mo and Co bearing phases. The slag subjected to flotation consisted in majority of fayalite, magnetite-iron oxides and a glass-like phase. Ni and Mo have been found to be closely associated to magnetite and fayalite. The tailing from the slag flotation has been subjected to sulphation roasting followed by water leaching as a hydrometallurgical means to recover the remaining Cu, Mo, Ni and Co. Based on the various sulphation roasting conditions (acid dosage, duration, temperature) copper, nickel and cobalt were brought to solution to a different extent. Molybdenum was the most difficult to be rendered soluble due to its close association with iron, suspected to form an insoluble compound with it. Sulphation roasting performed at 350ºC has secured the best extraction degree for Cu, Mo and Co, while maximum recovery of Ni has been documented when roasting was done at 150°C. Projects or project-orientated approaches have become a common form of work in nearly all sectors of economies. This has led to concepts such as ‘projectified’ and ‘project orientated’ organizations. By defining projectification of a company, industry, or economy as the share of project work in total work, one can reasonably determine the impact that project management, and by default projectification, has had on that company, industry, or economy in terms of staff optimization and allocation. This paper presents the results for such a projectification study of the South African mining industry. This sector has long been a significant contributor to the country’s economy from a gross value added (GVA) and employment point of view. Understanding the impact of projectification and the project management way of work on this industry may potentially add significant value to both the mining and project management knowledge areas. We show that although the mining industry is considered by some to operate in archaic ways, the level of projectification has increased over time, and now represents approximately one third of all work conducted.

The Koidu Kimberlite Project is situated in the Kono District of Sierra Leone, approximately 330 km east of the capital city, Freetown. The mining lease area is 4 km2 and comprises 2 kimberlite pipes, 4 dyke zones and a number of blows off the dykes. Koidu Holdings established on the property and began dewatering and the removal of silt from the existing 30 m excavation of the No.1 Pipe in 2003. While the original planning for the pipes included conventional open pit operations, mitigating factors such as the proximity of the town, the presence of houses close to the perimeter of the pipe, the size of the pipe and the planned open pit depth with relevant stripping ratios, as well as uncertainties on the grades in respect of an underground operation, lent itself to the vertical pit concept. The vertical pit was established using an A-frame headgear for the hoisting arrangement, with sidewall support comprising a combination of 20 m and 40 m long cable anchors, rock bolts, wire mesh and pneumatically applied concrete. The pit reached steady state production in January 2007 and produced some 26,000 tonnes of head feed per month until August 2007 when mining reached a depth of 74 m below the pit collar (approximately 126 m below surface). Mining was suspended following a sidewall failure that disrupted operations. Now that the grades in No.1 Pipe have been validated, focus has been switched to an underground operation taking account of both No. 1 Pipe and No. 2 Pipe. While the mining costs for the vertical pit have been higher than for a conventional open pit, the concept did circumvent the social implications, the issue of grade consistency and diamond value at depth, as well as providing the time frame to carry out a full underground mining study.

Dimension stone mining is Increasing because of growing demand from the building and construction industries. Diamond wire saw cutting is a popular dimension stone mining technique around the world. Estimation of the production cost for this method is critical for these operations. n this research a production cost model was developed for the mining of granite using a diamond wire saw. Cost and production data were collected from a granitic dolerite operation in Pakistan for a 4.5-year period, and analysed to identify the cost components. Fuel (34%), labour (15%), consumables (40%), and maintenance (5%) were found to be the four major cost components in this operation. A regression-based dimension stone production cost model incorporating statistically significant variables was developed. The data presented a strong correlation of production cost with fuel, labour, and consumables costs. Finally, a production cost model based on the consumption cost of diamond wire is presented. The model was verified using actual production cost data, which indicated 95% (R2 = 0.95) variance in the data between the predicted and actual production cost values. The model may help field engineers in computing their dimension stone operational cost during the cutting phase.

Impact crushers are common machines in comminution plants. Their high size-reduction ratio and relatively simple design, make them a preferred tool even when subjected to harsh wear, and producing a large quantity of fines in some applications. Until now the alignment of the operational parameters was an operator’s responsibility. Due to the random process characteristic this is mostly done based on empirical values and sensor data, such as power consumption. This paper describes a new approach for online process monitoring of the horizontal-shaft-impact crusher. The application of robust, low-cost acceleration sensors enables the permanent observation of the process characteristics. The operational and evaluation methods are determined on the basis of experiments. Subsequently the recorded measurements are analysed in regards of throughput, rotational speed and product particle size distribution. Occurring signal characteristics are described based on physical and technical principles. The measured data of the acceleration sensors at varying operation conditions provide insight in the course of process. The accurate utilisation yields the determination of the preferential process conditions providing the best balance between the pros and cons of an impact crusher. Both the experimental method and the data processing is discussed from a scientific perspective, displaying a completely new approach for the operation of impact crushers. India is devoid of coking coal resources, which is a vital raw material for coke making. As a result it has to import about 80% coking coal for steel making. Indian National Steel Policy, 2017 has envisaged crude steel production around 300 million tonnes Mt) by the year 2030-31 and forecasts coking coal demand of 161 Mtpa (million tonnes per annum). One way of improving the indigenous resources is to study the performance of existing washeries and to improve the clean coal recovery by adopting suitable technology. A study was carried out, mainly to focus on the fine coal circuit of an existing coking coal washery, to generate the desired quality of clean coal. The operating coking coal washery being studied is presently feeding coal from nine different sources with varying feed ash contents. The coal fines varied in ash content ranging from 19.5% - 43.6%. For treating the coal fines, the washery has operated a spiral for the past few years. Performance studies were carried out, and it was found that the spiral is not efficient in recovering the cleans. Detailed investigations were carried out on the coal fines using flotation techniques, and it was found that to achieve a low ash clean coal, the froth flotation is a much better beneficiation option than a spiral, The studies showed that the recovery of clean coal through a spiral is 67.7% at ash content of 27.0%, while flotation tests showed a recovery of 68.1% at 16.5% ash content. Ores from a single deposit may exhibit extensive variability in their mineralogy and texture. The ability to quantify this variability and link it to mineral processing performance is one of the primary goals of process mineralogy. This study focuses on the effect of alteration in three platinum group element ore samples from the Great Dyke in Zimbabwe – two of which were more pristine compared to the third, which was locally classified as ‘oxidized’ ore. These ores are known to be characterized by varying degrees of alteration, resulting in numerous challenges in flotation and affecting both grade and recovery. Alteration, by near-surface oxidation, of the valuable base metal sulphides and platinum group minerals resulted in lower flotation recoveries of Cu, Ni, Pt, and Pd. Evidence of incipient oxidation was more readily observed in the base metal sulphide assemblage than the platinum group mineral assemblage, even though the loss in recovery (because of oxidation) was most significant for Pd. Alteration through hydration resulted in a significant increase in mass pull and dilution of concentrate grade through the inadvertent recovery of naturally floating gangue comprising composite orthopyroxene and talc particles. In this study, the amount of naturally floating gangue was more strongly correlated with the talc grain size distribution than the grade of talc in the flotation feed. The oxidation and hydration alteration reactions are not necessarily mutually exclusive, although one may be more dominant than the other, giving rise to ore variability.

A recent experimental pillar extraction project at a UG2 bord-and-pillar mine presented a unique opportunity to compile a new pillar database. Currently, the South African hard rock bordand- pillar mines are designed using the Hedley and Grant formula with a modified K-value. This empirically derived formula was developed for uranium mines in the Elliot Lake district of Canada. The use of this formula for the design of pillars in South Africa is questionable. Very few pillar failures have nevertheless been observed and its current calibrations for the various reef types are possibly too conservative. A new UG2 pillar database of 66 pillars, of which seven are classified as failed, was compiled by the authors. This enabled a revised ‘first-order’ calibration of the K-value for the Hedley and Grant formula. The new estimated value for the UG2 is K = 75 MPa. This gives a pillar strength that is more conservative than the PlatMine formula. This work should nevertheless be considered as only a preliminary calibration as the database was small. Further work is also required to determine whether the exponents in the formula for the width and height parameters are appropriate for UG2 pillars.

"In an opencast mine explosives are used for fragmentation of rock. Inefficient use of explosive energy in an opencast operation produces excessive ground vibration, which is measured by peak particle velocity (PPV). To mitigate ground vibration, it is essential to develop a model to predict PPV. At present empirical models are used. These models are based on only a few input variables, hence they fail to take into account the effects of the myriad factors that cause ground vibration. Due to lack of explicit knowledge about the complex mine blasting system the scope of application of mathematical and statistical modeling techniques is limited. The artificial neural network (ANN) technique is a learning algorithm that can remove some of these limitations and can be applied to predict PPV. In this paper an ANN model is developed for prediction of blast vibration using 248 data records collected from three coal mines with diverse geomining conditions. The correlation coefficient between measured PPV and model output was found to be 0.96 and the average error percentage 11.85. The ANN model output was compared with the output of three empirical models that are widely used for prediction of PPV. The correlation coefficient between the PPV predicted by an empirical model and measured PPV data was 0.63 and the relative error percentage 38.47. This result demonstrates the superiority of the ANN model compared to empirical blast models. By using site-specific structural discontinuities as input the model performance can be further improved. Sensitivity analysis and 3D plotting were used to gain further knowledge about blast-induced ground vibration. IntroductionIn an opencast coal mine explosives are used for fragmentation of coal and overburden. If the explosive energy is not fully utilized it causes blast-induced ground vibration, which may damage nearby structures. Ground vibration is expressed as peak particle velocity (PPV). During different stages of mine planning and operation, it is necessary to use a ground vibration prediction model for blasthole design. Selection of the modelling technique is crucial. Mathematical and statistical modelling techniques have limited application because of the lack of explicit knowledge about the complex mine blasting system. Vogiatzi (2002) highlighted the problem of multicollinearity in case of statistical modeling techniques. Mutalib et al. (2013) stated that mathematical models are unable to capture the nonlinear relationship between several blasting-related parameters due to the complexity of the model input data. However, the difficulty involved in modelling complex blast vibration problems can be removed by adopting an alternative soft computing modelling approach. One of the soft computing techniques is the artificial neural network (ANN). Ragam and Nimaje (2018) developed an ANN model for predicting PPV using six input variables. Kosti et al. (2013) stated that the conventional predictors fail to provide acceptable prediction accuracy. They showed that a neural network model with four mine blast parameters as input could make significantly more accurate on-site predictions. Sayadi et al., (2013), using a database from Teheran Cement Company limestone mines, found that a neural network resulted in maximum accuracy and minimum error. Khandelwal and Singh (2009) developed an ANN model using 150 data records from an Indian coal mine with site-specific rock characteristics and geomining setting. Khandewal and Singh (2007) built a ground vibration prediction model for a magnesite mine using four prediction variables with 20 data records. Kamali and Ataei (2010) predicted PPV in the structure of the Karoun III power plant and dam using an ANN. El Hafiz et al. (2010) evaluated ground vibration predictors using data from a single-station seismograph at a limestone quarry in Egypt."

Efficient recovery of titanium from titaniferous magnetite ores continues to be a promising, yet unrealised opportunity, despite significant occurrences of titaniferous magnetite deposits worldwide and the existence of established industrial-scale practices. Current smelting processes only recover iron and vanadium, while the titanium is discarded in the waste slag. These slags are stockpiled and present massive environmental challenges, while still containing value as residual iron, vanadium and titanium. The complex mineralisation of these deposits does not allow for a significant opportunity to separate the titanium and magnetite minerals through normal physical upgrading processes. An upgrading process is therefore required to derive economic value. An efficient process technology could create an opportunity to unlock all three valuable commodities. South Africa’s Bushveld Complex, the largest known deposit of its kind in the world, is known for the high vanadium content but is also associated with relatively high concentrations of titaniferous magnetite. The quality of the Bushveld Complex was one of the drivers for the establishment of the Highveld Steel and Vanadium Company in the mid-1960s. The unfortunate demise of Highveld Steel and Vanadium created an opportunity to review current practices and evaluate the best available process for this complex ore in the context of the three elements of interest. Past and current processes, the nature of these deposits and the potential to recover titanium are assessed to highlight the potential of fluxless smelting of titaniferous magnetite to produce a titania-rich slag as feedstock to the pigment, titanium metal industry in conjunction with recovery of iron and vanadium. Ilmenite smelting practices are proposed as a suitable alternative to achieve the goal, namely sustainable processing. The quality control of a two-stage coal washing process involves several complex components that need to be modelled accurately, to enable autonomous control of the process. The first objective is to develop a method to track the material through the washing process, while ensuring accurate washing prediction models are used. This was achieved through a digital twin model of the Grootegeluk 1 coal processing plant. The model is the amalgamation of manipulating and combining of data-sets from the plant historian, geological wash tables, and mining dispatch servers. This information is then used to control and set the processing medium densities of all 15 modules on the plant, 10 modules in the primary wash and 5 modules in the secondary wash. This controller has been successfully implemented and controlled the plant for 10 days.

This paper provides a review on coloured gold, platinum, andpalladium intermetallic compounds, and discusses the models thatwere developed to obtain these materials. These compounds have acrystal structure of high symmetry, such as the CaF2or CsClstructures, ensuring distinct electron band structures. Variousexamples of coloured gold, platinum, and palladium intermetalliccompounds are provided. More in-depth discussion is provided on thepurple gold (AuAl2) and yellow platinum-aluminium (PtAl2)compounds with CaF2structure, as well as the purplish-pinkpalladium-indium (PdIn) compound with CsCl structure. Precious metal intermetallic compounds are used in jewellery andprovide a new dimension to design. Some of these compounds havealso found use as barrier coatings on turbine blades for jet engines,and more recently, research has been conducted into their potentialuse as catalysts, electro-catalysts, sensors, capacitors, and fordecorative coatings.

The thermal decomposition of carbonate minerals as pre-treatment before smelting reduces the energy requirement for smelting. It can also make the combustion of fossil fuels for heating unnecassary. Thermal decomposition may become important in reducing greenhouse gas emissions when producing ferromanganese alloys while simultaneously reducing electrical energy demand during smelting. A kinetic reaction rate model for the thermal decomposition of manganese ores is presented, based on published reaction rate kinetics for the decomposition of manganese oxides and calcium carbonate. The model was validated against thermogravimetric data for two carbonaceous manganese ore samples and one ferruginous manganese ore sample. The reaction rate model shows that carbonate minerals in the manganese ores are decomposed at temperatures above 900 °C while pyrolusite is decomposed at temperatures from 450 °C to 500 °C. Mn2O3 decomposes rapidly at 550 °C. Braunite decomposition at temperatures below 1000 °C was negligible. The presence of organic carbon in the samples led to further reduction of the samples during thermal treatment.

Background- History The most significant change in mining since the late 1970?s has been the emergence of very large scale mining operations , which have been developed to ensure profitability with relatively low grade ores. These large tonnage operations have resulted in the development of larger unit sized machines in all operations of beneficiation, solid-liquid separation and dewatering. Often only a few flotation lines are installed and tonnages up to 25 ktpd and beyond are not uncommon. The increased throughputs have led to the development of circular, reactor type tank designs. The reactor cell system is the most up to date flotation cell design to utilise the principles of circular cell design. The Svedala DV mechanism was specially developed to suit the RCS machine giving good solids handling characteristics and excellent metallurgical performance. Development of UG2 ore type flotation equipment The equipment was developed and optimised by Svedala process from 1995. A higher energy specification was requested by industry. This amounted to 3kW/m3 for installed volume. Existing designs were at 1.5kW/m3. Hence various modifications were required to achieve the required power input. The first 50m3 machines were installed and developed at Impala Platinum?s UG2 circuit over a one year period. Once reliability and performance was achieved, over 300 large volume flotation cells were installed at Anglo Platinum and Lonmin operations as well. Pilot Plant Development The Impala Platinum High Energy pilot plant was commissioned in 2002 and had an installed power exceeding 5kW/m3. It was operated for over a year at the tailings dam booster station and was fundamental to the large scale scavenging plant design. All experience in overcoming mechanical and operational problems was applied in scale up design principles. A very robust mechanism was designed to accommodate the additional power input from installed motors, as well as the high SG (>1.5) of the feed source. The pilot plant flowsheet is shown in the figure below.

We present a framework for solving the problem of functional compatibility between process control equipment in control centres at underground mines and operator capabilities. The equipment incorporates displays of current ventilation, gas, and fire hazard data, status of alarm and early warning systems, a voice communication subsystem, and facilities for recording and printing ofdata and reports. The layout of the existing control panel is compared with a recommended design. The basic principles of ergonomic design and arrangement of the controls and indicators, as well as ease of use, type of operations carried out with these controls, and operators’ viewing angles are discussed. The objective is to improve the usability of control panels, display boards, and graphic screens so as to enhance the functioning of control centres and optimize control of technological processes in coal mines.

Most of the Au and PGM ores in Russia are characterised by a thin mineral impregnation of noble metals in sulfide minerals, and a large variety of mineral forms that lead to high loss of precious metals with fine fractions during flotation. In modern flotation technology, the rational choice of reagents is one of the main trends for selective separation of minerals and effective metals recovery. New data on the selectivity of the thermo-sensitive polymer with specific functional groups (TMPPh) as a flocculant and collector of Au and Pt fine fractions are available. The selective modified collector (DEDTCm) for the recovery of Au and Pt from complex ores is discussed in this paper. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEAM), laser SIM and AFM microscopy, UV and IR spectroscopy were applied to study the adsorbed layer of new reagents on the mineral surface. Flotation tests of TMPPh on the gold-bearing ore of the Olimpiada deposit showed an increase in Au extraction and Au content in the concentrate of the rougher flotation. Using a combination of reagents TMPPh and ButX, the quality of the Au and Pt concentrates increased in 1.7 time with an increase in recovery up to 15 % compared with the traditional reagent mode. Testing of TMPPh polymers in flotation of Pt-Cu-Ni ore at Norilsk Nickel has shown the ability to obtain a concentrate with a higher Pt content. Recovery of platinum is 17% higher than recovery in an experiment without polymer. Application of DEDTCm helped to achieve higher technological parameters in flotation of lowgrade Rt-Cu-Ni ore. Compared to the basic mode Pt recovery was plus 13%, Pd recovery was plus 9% and the content of precious metals in the rougher flotation concentrate increased in 2,5 - 4 times. This paper provides an overview of the concepts of citations and journal impact factors, and the implications of these metrics for the Journal of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (JSAIMM). Two key research literature databases publish journal impact factors; namely, Web of Science and Scopus. Different equations are used to calculate journal impact factors and care should be exercised when comparing different journals. The JSAIMM has a low impact factor compared with some of the more prestigious journals. It nevertheless compares well with journals serving other mining sectors, such as the Canadian CIM Journal. The problems associated with journal impact factors are discussed. These include questionable editorial practices, the negative impact of this concept on good research, and the problem of a few highly cited papers distorting the journal impact factor. As a consequence, there is growing resistance to the use of journal impact factors to measure research excellence. The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment is a global movement striving for an alternative assessment of research quality. As a recommendation, the Editorial Board of the JSAIMM should adopt a pragmatic approach and not alter good journal policies simply to increase the journal impact factor. The focus should remain on publishing excellent quality papers. Marketing of the Journal, the quality of the published papers, and its open access policy should be used to counter the perception that journals with high impact factors are better options in which to publish good research material.

"SynopsisMining value chains are dynamic systems and should be managed according to systemic flow-based principles. This includes a detailed focus on the impact of variable geological conditions on material flow, product quality, and production cost, visibility of the total mining system to operators and managers, as well as the synchronization of resources and activities in downstream processes. Thirty mining operations across the African continent were studied to establish to what extent systemic flowbased principles are applied in day-to-day operations. The study indicated that although most mining operations have identified the relevant geoprocessing variables, only a small number apply this information in a flow-based management approach. Most mining operators do not focus on developing a clear flow view of the mining value chain and on making it visible to operators and managers to enable them to optimally set and reset operations. Daily synchronization of geoprocessing variables is limited to a small number of variables, e.g. synchronizing ore hardness with drilling or milling requirements, in less than 30% of the operations evaluated. Operations where these principles have been adopted reported a noteworthy improvement in performance. The study indicates that notable potential exists in most of the operations evaluated to implement flowbased management principles, including geometallurgical principles. This can significantly improve value chain performance without exorbitant capital layouts and enhance ROCE. IntroductionObjective of the studyThe study seeks to establish to what extent systemic flow-based principles have been adopted in the southern African mining industry and the implications thereof. Specific attention is given to the importance of defining and managing geoprocessing dependencies (geological variables directly impacting mining and plant performance – the geometallurgical approach), establishing a flow view of the mining system, which typically includes a dashboard of the flow of ore/product quality and cost from the mining face to the customer, and limiting the impact of dependencies through synchronization of activities and resources, e.g. ensuring that a continuous miner does not wait for a roofbolter, or that reagent addition rates are matched with a specific ore/concentrate composition."
