This circular is the second of a series presenting methods employed in solving the technical problems encountered in the production of sand and gravel. The first paper3 discussed the methods use in prospecting and exploration. This one teals with the problems involved in bringing a raw prospect to the production stage and considers the various methods of development and the Factors affecting that development. Later publications are planned to present and discuss methods of recovery and treatment. The recovery of sand and ravel from natural deposits and their preparation for market involve a progressive sequence of operating steps or processes. Each step or process presents its own peculiar problems which require different angles of mental approach, methods, and tools, but all are more or less dependent on the step or process which precedes or follows.

Workers using vibrating hand tools have the potential for developing health problems associated with repeated forceful actions and exposures to hand-transmitted vibration. Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) and other hand-arm system disorders have been associated with such exposures.1-2 To better assess health risks, comprehensive evaluations of these exposures must include quantitative assessments of hand-tool coupling forces; unfortunately, no standardized method for quantifying hand forces exists. Handle instrumentation may be ill-suited for some field environments. Psychophysical force-recall techniques may provide alternatives to handle instrumentation. A thorough understanding of the effects of vibration and other factors on force-recall accuracy and reliability is important before such methods are applied in risk assessments. Methods In this study, the effects of vibration and other factors on the accuracy of psychophysical force-recall were explored in two experiments. Twelve male subjects participated in the first experiment. The second experiment employed 20 participants (10 female, 10 male). In each experiment, participants applied specific grip and push forces to an instrumented handle mounted on a shaker system. Participants were exposed to sinusoidal vibration at frequencies that ranged from 0 Hz to 250 Hz. Three levels of applied force (low: grip = 15 N/push = 25 N, medium: grip = 30 N/push = 50 N, and high: grip = 45 N/push = 75 N ) and two levels of vibration magnitude (low: ANSI 4-8-hr limit and high: ANSI <0.5-hr limit)3 were examined. During the vibration exposure period, participants were provided with visual feedback while they attempted to “memorize” the applied grip and push forces. At the conclusion of the vibration exposure/force memorization period and a controlled rest period, the participants tried to duplicate the grip and push forces on a non-vibrating handle without the aid of visual feedback. The effects of different vibration frequencies, vibration magnitudes, and grip and push force levels were tested in a random order from trial to trial. Results Participants tended to overestimate grip and push forces. Depending on exposure conditions, error means ranged from 2 N to 10 N. The ANOVA revealed that force-recall errors for exposures between 31.5 Hz and 63 Hz were significantly higher than those at other vibration frequencies (p < 0.05). The frequency effect is depicted in Figure 1. Error means were greater when participants were exposed to the higher vibration magnitude (mean = 9.1 N, 95% CI = 8.2-10.1 N) when compared with the lower vibration magnitude (mean = 4.9 N, 95% CI = 3.9-5.8 N) (p < 0.05). In the majority of metal and nonmetal mining operations, narrow vein deposits are being mined with slusher hoists. Thin; method of mucking is costly, due in part to its inherent labor intense operation and to its inability to muck 100 pct of the deposits. Mechanized equipment would greatly improve the material handling in narrow vein mining and would dramatically reduce the operational cost. The Compact Loader/Trammer, known as the "mini-mucker" has been developed to increase productivity of the load/haul/dump portion of the typical narrow vein mining cycle. This is Volume II of the final report and concerns the operation and maintenance of the mini-mucker. Volume I covers a general and design review of the activities on the subject contract and are available under separate cover.

A kinetic study of the carbon deposition reaction was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines as part of a broad investigation of metallurgical reactions in the iron ore blast furnace. The disproportionation of carbon monoxide on iron pellets was investigated at carbon monoxide pressures between 0.5 and 2 atmospheres (absolute) and temperatures from 400° to 1,075° C. Gas flow in the range from 0.25 to 0.85 standard liter per minute was found to have little effect on the reaction velocity. The addition of nitrogen and helium to caron monoxide exerted only a dilution effect on the rate of carbon deposition. However, an addition of 1 percent hydrogen increased the rate about 100 times. Small amounts of carbon dioxide in the inlet gas exerted little effect on the rate of carbon deposition. The maximum rate for carbon deposition in the first 2 hours occurred at 550° C. The apparent molar activation energies at various stages of the reaction were found to vary from 13 kcal initially to 36 kcal during the latter stages of the reaction. The reaction rate behavior was tentatively explained by an adsorption step followed by the diffusion of iron through a shell of inactive iron carbide.

This report is the 23d in a series summarizing research and technologic work by the Federal Bureau of Mines on coal and related investigations; it is the fifth report to be issued on a calendar-year basis.2/ Publications by Bureau personnel in 1958 are cited;3/ in addition work in progress during the year is briefly described. To conserve our reserves of coal the Bureau of Mines conducts a program concerned with the development of fundamental information on coal characteristics and behavior, and the improvement of technology related to its production and utilization. The ability to anticipate and meet future demands for coal depends on a number of factors: (1) Knowledge of reserves from a stand- point of both quantity and quality; (2) the development of improved mining methods, health and safety measures, and preparation techniques that will insure its most efficient exploitation; and (3) knowledge of the controlling factors in efficient use of coal in combustion, carbonization, gasification, direct and indirect hydrogenation, and other new processes. The Bureau is concerned with each of these areas.4/,5/

The use of high pressure fluid cavitation is investigated as a means of breaking an ore into its constituent grains. This Cavitational Rock Dissagregation (CRD) is found to be possible and effective in breaking down galena ore, both in sandstone and dolomite host material. The technique did not work as well in comminuting and cleaning oil shale, because the cavitation drove the oil into emulsion with the water. The presence of dominant bedding in the rock also caused preferential breakage to these lines, rather than to the individual grain boundaries. This problem was also encountered in tests on igneous ore where weakness plants of the overall ore proved weaker than the boundaries of the individual grains. It was found that the prevailing expression of cavitation erosion dependence on pressure was not absolutely valid. In contrast it was found that CRD is much more sensitive to jet flow diameter, and when this was recognized it was found possible to erode rock with compressive strength of up to 350 MPa with operating jet pressures of 10 MPa.

Musculoskeletal injury is a term used to describe a wide range of soft tissue disorders which affect the nerves, tendons, and muscles. Common examples include lower back pain, tendonitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome. The majority of these injuries are not the result of sudden mishaps, but usually develop gradually from repeated wear and tear. Symptoms may first appear after weeks, months, or even years. Symptoms may result from many types of activities, performed at work or at home, and it is often difficult to attribute a single event. In fact, it is more common to identify the factors which may have contributed to the development of the condition. The terms repetitive strain injuries or cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) have been commonly used to refer to disorders that have occurred due to work related activities (Putz-Anderson, 1988; Fraser, 1989). Three main risk factors contribute to CTDs: force, repetition, and awkward postures. Any one or combination of these may contribute to the development of CTDs. Therefore, the design of equipment in conjunction with the required tasks should attempt to reduce these risk factors. Examining the layout of the work area to help identify tasks which may contribute to cumulative trauma is necessary. In this study by the Federal Bureau of Mines Pennsylvania anthracite from the Eastern Middle field was oxidized by concentrated nitric acid at steam-bath temperature for 24 to 1,000 hours. The quantitative data obtained include yields of nitric-acid soluble and insoluble products and the distribution of carbon and ash in each. The acid-insoluble residues were examined for solubility in aqueous sodium hydroxide. With a sodium hydroxide concentration of at least 1 normal, a portion of the residue could be extracted in the form of a true solution. With lower alkali concentrations, peptization occurred. Alkali solubility of the residue increased with length of oxidation. However, when expressed in percentages of original coal weight, the alkali solubility remained essentially constant after 192 hours of oxidation. This suggests that the alkali-soluble products are converted to acid-soluble products at the same rate as the original coal substance is converted to alkali-soluble material. Microscopic observations of the peptization of the acid-insoluble residues revealed a gross micellar physical structure. The action of nitric acid is apparently not restricted to the surface of a coal particle. The acid penetrates the particle through the pore structure, dissolving some of the ash and altering the bonds between the coal micelles. The bond alteration, as indicated by ultimate analyses, involves the physical and chemical adsorption of the components of nitric acid. Some of the altered bonds are not thermally stable; this instability is shown by the complete loss of peptizing ability when the acid-insoluble products are heated above 200° C. This loss is accompanied by the evolution of water, oxides of nitrogen, and hydrocyanic acid.

In May 1973, the Bureau of Mines asked Arthur D. Little, Inc. (A DL) to investigate existing industrial communication standards that may be applicable to the problem of developing standards for mine communication, considering that the standards that may ultimately be developed will require simple field procedures for the industry and the inspectorate to determine that communication systems are properly functioning. The emphasis on this study is on telephone communications as related to coal mine applications. B. TASKS The tasks agreed upon for this program were as follows: 1. "Investigate the current practices and existing standards of other industries under government regulation. 2. Determine applicable methods for industry personnel and inspectors to ascertain conformance on-site with minimal test hardware. 3. Review the Bureau&apos;s approval, testing and inspection procedure as it may impact the development of such standards. 4. From the above studies investigate the development of installation and performance standards for mine communications, including voice and telemetry. 5. Prepare a written report specifying what standards and field inspection techniques are applicable with recommendations for development of subsequent data and ultimately standards and field inspection techniques. 6. Prepare a written summary of the findings of various investigations with an appendix covering the detailed findings of each investigation. 7. Prepare a list of suggestions of additional assistance the Bureau might require in subsequent phases of developing communication standards and means of ascertaining performance."

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted joint research on dust explosions by studying post-explosion dust samples. The samples were collected after full-scale explosions at the PRL Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM), and after laboratory explosions in the PRL 20-L chamber and the Fike I m3 chamber. The dusts studied included both high- and low-volatile bituminous coals. Low temperature ashing for 24 h at 515 °C was used to measure the incombustible content of the dust before and after the explosions. The data showed that the post-explosion incombustible content was always as high as, or higher than the initial incombustible content. The MSHA alcohol coking test was used to determine the amount of coked dust in the post-explosion samples. The results showed that almost all coal dust that was suspended within the explosion flame produced significant amounts of coke. Measurements of floor dust concentrations after LLEM explosions were compared with the initial dust loadings to determine the transport distance of dust during an explosion. All these data will be useful in future forensic investigations of accidental dust explosions in coal mines, or elsewhere.

This report presents theoretical studies and experimental work dealing with the detection of dangerous roof and pillar conditions in underground mines through measure¬ment of temperature differences on the surface of the mine opening. The theoretical work is directed at modeling the circumstances where a loose slab of rock might be detected. The experimental work provides input data for the theoretical models. At the beginning of the project, little was known by the authors of the conditions that would permit detection of a loose slab of rock or coal by measuring the surface temperature differences. The U.S. Bureau of Mines had found that there were detectable surface temperature differences on the roofs and pillars of mines. The Bureau contracted with Colorado School of Mines to measure temperature profiles around mine openings in an effort to learn if the temperature differences they had detected were directly related to loose pieces of roof and pillar rock. The Bureau was principally interested in learning if loose rock could be found in coal mines by measurement of surface temperature differences with an infrared thermometer.

Bolting large sheets of wire mesh screen (WMS) to the roof of underground mines prevents injuries due to rock falls. However, WMS can be heavy and awkward to lift and transport, and may result in significant spinal loading. Accordingly, six male subjects (mean age =45.8 years + 7.5 SD) were recruited to lift WMS in a laboratory investigation of the biomechanical demands. Biomechanical modeling was used to estimate external moments about L5-S1 for sixteen lifting tasks, using two sizes of WMS. Full-size WMS involved a two-person lift, while half-size WMS involved a one-person lift. Lifts were performed under 168 cm and 213 cm vertical space. Restriction in vertical space increased the maximum L5-S1 extensor moment from 254 to 274 Nm and right lateral bending moment from 195 to 251 Nm. Lifting full sheets of screen (as opposed to half sheets) resulted in an average 33 Nm increase in L5-S1 extensor moment. The L5-S1 extensor moment was increased by an average of 44 Nm (18%) when lifting screens positioned flat on the floor compared to an upright position. Relevance to industry: Large flexible materials are commonly lifted in industrial work environments, and may involve the efforts of two or more workers. The current study examines the low back loading associated with lifting large flexible screens and presents recommendations to reduce spine loading.

The use of a suspended growth system of T. ferrooxidans attached in a film to individual particles of bentonite and operated as a sequencing batch reactor has been shown to be a practical way of oxidizing ferrous iron in acid mine drainage. This component followed by limestone neutralization is both a technically and economically feasible approach to the treatment of these wastewaters in comparison to existing and proposed methods. The advantages, in addition to less expense, are greater safety, acceptable treatment at a lower pH, lower solids buildup, less danger of overtreatment, and greater flexibility in operational characteristics. In this report data on the continuous bench scale operation of the system under a variety of conditions shows sustained levels of oxidation in excess of 9%. A cost analysis projects capital and operating costs of $80/1,000 m3 of wastewater.

This report summarizes a study conducted by The Service Bureau Corporation for the Bureau of Mines. Evaluations reflected herein are the result of an independent investigation by The Service Bureau Corporation of methane considerations during coal mining. The study is oriented toward a systematic analysis of methane control problems during coal mining. Throughout this study an attempt has been made to ensure considerations consistent with the recently enacted Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. References to reports by The Bureau of Mines and others are made for the purposes of establishing identification between the evaluations contained in this report and on-going research efforts.

The mine system analysis and evaluation study presented in this report was part of the U. S. Bureau of Nines&apos; Tertiary channel project conducted under the Heavy Metals program. The Badger Hill pit, located on the west end of the San Juan Ridge area, near Nevada City, California, was the site of the Bureau&apos;s field work. The objectives of this study were: (1) Determine potential alternative mining systems for some of the large tertiary channel gold-bearing gravel deposits, and (2) Identify areas of technology where further investigation would be merited because of their potential inclusion in a mining system for such deposits, The study involved the development of a mineralized block inventory, an economic block inventory, determination of optimum ultimate mining limits and a preliminary economic mining system evaluation. Computer programs were developed and utilized for each of the study phases stated above. The sampling program conducted at Badger Hill by the Bureau Delineation Group together with confidential drill hole data provided by the San Juan Gold Co. formed the basic gold values and distribution information from which a deposit model was developed. The deposit was divided into minable block units and net economic values were assigned to each block for various configurations of both open-pit and underground mining methods based on cost and performance data provided by the various Bureau of Mines Research Centers. A number of controllable variables such as: (1) Mining method (open-pit and underground), (2) depth of mining cut, (3) production rate and (4) equipment type and capacity were evaluated. The prime measures of effectiveness on which the mining systems where judged were discounted cash flow rate of return and maximum utilization of natural resources. The analysis showed that underground mining of the Six-Mile Tertiary channel gold-bearing gravel deposit under consideration was uneconomical and did not permit maximum recovery of the resources within the channel. It was also apparent that mining the Six-Mile Deposit for gold alone is uneconomical or at best marginal at a gold price less than $80 per ounce. The analysis showed that the potential for an economic mining operation within the Six-Mile Deposit exists when the gravel resources of the channel are considered together with the gold. It was determined that the highest rate of return would be realized with a 20-year open-pit mining operation yielding 745,000 ounces of -gold and 55 million cubic yards of usable gravel.

This report summarizes part of the work performed under the USBM Contract No. H0155113, "Noise Abatement of Continuous Mining Machines." It reviews, briefly, the aboveground tests performed on a Jeffrey 120M conveyor that were documented in Vol. I of the subject contract; and describes the performance of treatments implemented on underground equipment. The noise level at the operator&apos;s position in the aboveground-test facility was reduced from 101.5 to 91 dBA using treatments with satisfactory - aboveground - durability. Extensive underground evaluation has been performed only on the constrained layer damping, which has reduced the conveyor noise by 2 to 6 dBA depending on the operating conditions, and has been shown to be sufficiently durable. Other promising candidates for exploratory evaluation include resilient layers for the top/bottom decks, and smoother discontinuities between adjacent conveyor sections.

This report summarizes the work performed under USBM Contract No. H0395041. The primary objective of this work was to extend the noise control technology developed under earlier USBM projects to a wider range of load-haul-dump models to evaluate the general applicability of these techniques. Noise control treatments were designed, fabricated, and installed on three Wagner LHDs (an 5T-2B, ST-2D, and an 5T-8A) selected as demonstration machines for this project. The machines were evaluated either in production mines or at the Bureau&apos;s Lake Lynn Mine. The results indicate that it is possible to achieve overall noise reductions of between 4 and 8 dB using these techniques. Engine cooling and seal design were determined to be important design issues in such treatments.

The process of converting coal into coke is known as carbonization. Essentially, carbonization is destructive distillation in which the volatile matter of coal is released when coal is heated above its decomposition temperature and passes through a plastic stage before solidifying and forming coke. The mechanics of coke formation are complex, and the specific properties of certain coals that allow them to "cake" or form coke are still unknown. Coke is a hard, cellular, carbonaceous mass, formed by heating coal in the absence of air. It is porous, irregular in size and shape, and is similar in appearance to wood charcoal. Coke, however, is denser, more porous, and more abrasive than charcoal. Coke has been in use for several thousand years. History has recorded its use in Greece before the birth of Christ, and it is thought to have been used in China even before that time. It was not until the l6th century, however, that a method for coking was developed in Europe that subsequent ly evolved into the coking process that is known today. The coke industry in the United States began in the latter half of the 19th century when beehive-coke ovens were built to supply fuel for iron blast furnaces. Before this time, an iron industry fueled principally by charcoal had been in existence for several hundred years. With the depletion of timber resources, coke gradually replaced charcoal as blast-furnace fuel, and by 1875 more iron was made with coke than with any other fuel. Before 1893 a 11 coking was done in beehive ovens. These ovens are refractory kilns with arched roofs, sometimes joined together to form batteries.
