Laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the breakage characteristics of pyrophyllite in a laboratory ball mill. In grinding tests, the breakage characteristics were analyzed using the mathematical kinetic models based on the two breakage functions; the specific rate of breakage and the primary breakage distribution. Two samples having similar chemical composition show identical values in specific rate of breakage. In comparison, there are different values of primary breakage distribution for each sample. The size distributions of the product with various grinding time are well described by the parameters from non-linear searching.

"In the Inco matte separation process, a slow-cooled converter matte is separated into three main discrete mineral phases: chalcocite (Cc), heazlewoodite (Hz) and a Cu-Ni-Fe alloy. After magnetic removal of the alloy, Cc and Hz are separated by flotation at pH>12 with diphenyl guanidine (DPG) as both collector and frother. High selectivity is achieved in rougher flotation. However, in later flotation stages such as in the middlings circuit, as oxidation takes place, Hz becomes highly floatable, resulting in a very poor separation between Cc and Hz.Starch and dextrin as Hz depressants were evaluated on the middlings circuit feed and showed no positive impact on Cc/Hz separation selectivity. Ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) extraction showed the existence of abundant surface Cu and Ni ions. The use of triethylene triamine (TETA) or EDTA in flotation did not improve Cc/Hz separation selectivity. Microflotation tests were carried out on pure synthetic Cc and Hz minerals. It was found that Hz did not float in the presence of DPG. However, Hz conditioned with either copper sulfate solution or in contact with Cc floated readily in the presence of DPG. It is concluded that the major reason for Hz flotation in the middlings circuit is due to Cc oxidation releasing Cu ions that adsorb on the Hz surface making it reactive with DPG thus rendering the Hz floatable."

"The aim of NPO RIVS research and practice activities is to minimize impact of the mineral processing plants (MPP) on environment by using new concentration methods, high-technology equipment, implementation of engineering solutions directed to reduce emission of polluting substances (PS) into atmosphere, application of low-waste technologies, decrease of water withdrawal from a surface water or groundwater source for process needs. In our studies environmental safety of mineral flotation is provided through technologies using highly selective chemicals, that leads not only to reducing reagent consumption, and production of saleable products of high content of extracted minerals, but also to reducing pollutant emissions, decreasing supply of surfactants (SAA) in natural geosystems, primarily, in ground and surface waters. Decrease of water withdrawal from a surface water or groundwater sources for process needs can be achieved by using closed circuits and waste water treatment for further use in process operations, recycled water conditioning to obtain optimum quality parameters for process operations of concentration. Concentration in water (wet processing), tailings dewatering and semidry and dry (filtration cake) stockpiling in tailing ponds, efficient dust-collecting systems contribute to pollutant emission reduction. Use of mineral wastes – concentration tailings as a source of valued components, facilitates efficient use of natural resources and reduces wastes and its impact on natural ecosystems due to smaller areas of damaged lands during waste products disposal. Process and engineering solutions of NPO RIVS that allow diminishing impact of MPP on natural environment (NE) have been implemented in mining and processing complexes of Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Kirghizia and Mongolia. Compliance with environmental safety requirements contributes to enhancement of mineral processing and sustainable mineral development.INTRODUCTION Mining and processing complexes have a significant impact on environment as a result of extraction and recovery of mineral resources, landscape changes, waste disposal and, as a consequence, pollution of soils, surface and underground water sources. Therefore, the aim of the operation of the mineral processing enterprises in its research and practical activities is to reduce impact on environment due to new beneficiation technologies, high-technology equipment, implementation of engineering solutions directed to reduce emissions of polluting substances (PS) into atmosphere, use of low-waste technologies, decrease of water withdrawal from a surface water or groundwater source for process needs. ST Equipment & Technology, LLC (STET) has developed a processing system based on tribo-electrostatic belt separation that provides the mineral processing industry a means to beneficiate fine materials with an entirely dry technology. In contrast to other electrostatic separation processes that are typically limited to particles greater than 75µm in size, the triboelectric belt separator is ideally suited for separation of very fine (<1µm) to moderately coarse (300µm) particles with very high throughput. The high efficiency multi-stage separation through internal charging/recharging and recycle results in far superior separations that can be achieved with a conventional single-stage free-fall tribo-electrostatic separator. The triboelectric belt separator technology has been used to separate a wide range of materials including mixtures of glassy aluminosilicates/carbon, calcite/quartz, talc/magnesite, and barite/quartz. An economic comparison of using the tribo-electrostatic belt separation versus conventional flotation for barite / quartz separation illustrates the advantages of dry processing for minerals.

Kumistinskoye gold- and silver bearing ores (Republic of Kazakhstan) as well as standardized test solutions containing gold, silver, copper, zinc and iron were studied. The best results in silver and gold recovery from Kumistinskoye gold- and silver bearing ores were achieved through use of complex cyanide-thiosulfate solutions as compared to individual cyanide solutions and thiosulfate solutions. It was found that such complex solutions substantially step up leaching process herewith increasing precious metals recovery rates. Thermodynamics of studied chemical processes was calculated. Reaction order, kinetic constant and activation energy of gold leaching process through use of cyanide-thiosulfate solutions were identified. We managed to prove that the sorption rates and holding capacity in process of gold anions recovery with anionite AM-2B are comparable to sorption characteristics for cyanide solutions. "Air recovery, the fraction of air entering a flotation cell that overflows the cell lip, is linked to flotation performance, and it has been shown through industrial testwork that operating flotation cells at air rates that yield the Peak Air Recovery (PAR) results in high mineral recovery. For operating parameters over which flotation plants have little control, such as particle size, investigating the effect on the position of PAR, and the subsequent effect on flotation performance, proves more challenging. To this end, we have developed a bench scale flotation system that runs continuously and exhibits froth behavior similar to that found industrially, allowing the study of such parameters as particle size in addition to air rate. The bench scale system comprises a 4 l baffled cylindrical flotation cell, stirred by a Rushton impeller. The concentrate is recycled back into the pulp, allowing for continuous operation. Glass beads are used as solid particles, allowing a wide range of particle sizes to be tested, with TTAB as collector and MIBC as frother. The system allows operation at air rates typical of industrial flotation systems (1 -2 cms-1 superficial gas velocity), in addition to yielding a froth that coalesces and bursts and exhibits a peak in air recovery as cell air rate in increased. Solids and water recovery is also measured. The results show that air recovery is sensitive to changes in particle size. The intermediate size distribution showed a peak in air recovery (PAR) that corresponded with the maximum solids flowrate, as found industrially. It is shown that finer particles do result in more stable froths and higher recoveries, particularly at low air rates. The effect of particle size on the position of PAR is not yet unequivocally determined from these results."

"The major platinum producers in South Africa make use of electric furnaces for the melting of PGM bearing nickel - copper concentrates. To gain better understanding of the furnace operation, research was conducted at CSIRO Minerals in Melbourne, Australia. One aspect of the research project was the investigation of the factors affecting the electrical conductivity of melter type slags.Electrical conduction in slags can occur through two mechanisms: ionic and electronic. There is good understanding of the ionic mechanism. In slags containing high levels of iron, the dominant mechanism is electronic. There is limited understanding of the electronic mechanism and one of the aims of the research was to investigate this mechanism further.Experimental work was carried out on Al2O3.CaO.FeOx.MgO.SiO2 slags similar in composition to the melter slags. Conductivity increased significantly with iron oxide content. Above 20wt% FeOx, electronic conduction was significant and the conductivity varied with the oxidation state of the slag. As the iron oxide content was increased further, the electronic mechanism became more dominant. The conductivity reached a maximum at around pO2 = 10-7 to 10-4 atm., although this value was dependent on the total iron oxide content and basicity of the slag."

Coal mining activity is inextricably connected to waste production. These include coal slurries deposited in environment. Current knowledge in the field of mining and especially mineral processing allows extracting valuable fuel from deposit coal slurries. The article discusses of previous works devoted to coal slurries inventory in Jankowice Mine in Poland (Upper Silesia) and quality assessment of coal slurries. 12 samples of coal slurries deposited in waste pond of Jankowice Mine was taken for the investigation. For the moment reserves of high-grade ores are practically depleted requiring ever-increased involvement of low assay raw materials, such as black-shale ores, in industrial operations. Black-shale ores are constituted of minerals containing such valuable components as vanadium, uranium, molybdenum, manganese, and rare-earth elements (REE). We studied technogenic solutions of black-shale ores processing, after uranium, molybdenum, and vanadium were recovered. Mentioned solutions contain rare-earth elements in substantial quantities (S REE 70-100 mg/dm3) that is very important factor taking into consideration the world demand ever-increasing last years. Higher concentrations of iron and aluminum inhibiting REE sorption and extraction recovery are found in solutions. We propose a method of hydrolytic deposition to cleaning solutions from impurity elements (Fe, Al). Study of hydrolytic deposition kinetics allowed identifying optimal conditions to run this process. Rare-earth elements may be recovered from purified solutions through sorption process followed by their further deposition from eluates in form of concentrates. "Apatite is an important host mineral in igneous and metamorphic rocks for production of phosphate fertilizers and phosphoric acid, and a potential source of rare earth elements (REE) production. For dissolution of REEs, sulfuric acid is better leaching reagent to develop the economical viable process for recovering of rare earth elements from apatite ore. However, the efficiency of rare earth elements dissolution in H2SO4 is about 30 % due to the formation of calcium phosphate or calcium sulfate as precipitate. On the other hands, phosphorus is mainly produced from phosphate ore. However, when treating rare earth elements containing phosphate ore, rare earth elements were discharged. Hence, development of novel apatite ore treatment process is required for effective utilization of natural resources. In this study, apatite deposit associated with REE was treated with sulfuric acid leaching and two stage precipitation by oxalic acid (C2H2O4) and magnesium chloride (MgCl2) for recovering REE and phosphorus, individually. Results showed that it can be seen the vast majority of La (87.5%), Ce (87.3 %), Pr (86.1 %), Nd (85.2 %) and Y (90.9 %) were dissolved in 1 mol/L diluted H2SO4 solution from the apatite ore. As average leaching rate of REE, over 85% of REE were leached by the condition. In the first stage precipitation using the obtained pregnant leach solution from leaching, over 90% of REE was precipitated by oxalic acid addition after controlling pH to 1 by NH4OH solution. After pH changed to 8.5, over 90% of phosphorus was recovered as precipitate by magnesium chloride addition in second stage precipitation"

A significant part of the currently production of the non-ferrous and precious metals is from sulfide ores. Character feature of sulfide ores is the presence in them always pyrite and wide range of different sulfide minerals else. These minerals are the carriers of valuable for industry metals. Due to the low content of the main components, very often call on the use of collective- selective flow-sheets. The extraction of minerals in the collective concentrates determined in a large extent the effectiveness of the collective-selective sheets. In conditions of bulk flotation kinetics to floatate of the various minerals is different. Due to why it is and how it can be used for a more effective selection of minerals ?this is the main task of this report. For this purpose are used results from the bulk flotation of pyrite, copper sulfides, molybdenite, galena, blenda. It is separated and place of host rocks. Base it of large experimentation material, including both electro-kinetic measurements of mineral systems, as well as laboratory flotation tests and factories monitoring it is established kinetics of flotation of mineral particles in conditions of collective flotation. Made an effort to clarify the effect as of the species and the proportion of different sulfide minerals involved in flotation pulp else. Traced was the impact of the density and aeration of the flotation pulp on deferens in kinetics of mineral flotation in condition of balk flotation. The obtained results are used to increase the efficiency of the diffraction flotation of the complex sulfide ores containing precious metals. The results of the test work of four treatment options of three refractory gold-pyrite and gold-arsenic flotation concentrates are presented. These concentrates were obtained during the concentration of primary ores of large gold deposits. It was found that ultrafine grinding of refractory flotation concentrates did not increase the recovery of gold during subsequent cyanidation. The elimination of sulfur and arsenic during oxidative roasting is 99 per cent. 88-93 per cent of gold is recovered by cyanidation from calcines. After biooxidation of the flotation concentrates with a mixture of strains Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans 88-91 per cent of gold is recoverable by direct cyanidation. The recovery of gold from flotation concentrates by pressure oxidation is 88-99 per cent. These results suggest that gold recovery is important but the following strategies would have an impact on a plant performance and would be considered when developing an option to treat refractory ores: capital and operating costs, ore reserves, mine location, infrastructure and qualified staff. Alkyl hydroxamic acid was shown to be a suitable collector for the flotation of pyrochlore from carbonatite niobium oxide ores. In the direct batch rougher flotation from the ore without desliming, over 85% of the pyrochlore can be recovered at about 30% mass pull. Cleaner flotation tests showed that the rougher concentrate can be upgraded. The adsorption mechanisms of octyl hydroxamic acid (OHA) were studied by using high purity pyrochlore and calcite mineral samples and employing analytical measurements such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV/VIS spectroscopy. FTIR showed a shift of the vibrational frequencies of the carbonyl group in hydroxamic acid after adsorption on pyrochlore and calcite, and the shift was more pronounced on pyrochlore. XPS results indicated a lowering of the binding energies (chemical shift) of Nb3d5/2 and Ca2p3/2 electrons on pyrochlore, and the lowering of the binding energies of Ca2p3/2 electrons on calcite, again with the shift being more pronounced on pyrochlore. The results indicated hydroxamic acid formed stronger complexes with pyrochlore than with calcite. Adsorption isotherms indicated that OHA adsorbed more on pyrochlore than on calcite at low concentration. At high concentrations, the adsorption densities on both minerals were similar. All results explained the observed selectivity of the reagents in the flotation of the carbonatite niobium oxide ores.

Results of the study of chloride ion concentration effect to osmium-187 sorption from wastewater of copper smelter with use of foreign anionites of different basicity and structure are presented in the work. It was found that the increase of chloride ion concentration in the wastewater helps to increase recovery of osmium using anionites regardless of their nature. The ways to intensify the process are proposed. The method for osmium elution from the anionites with potassium iodate solution was developed. It was shown that the method lets to recover up to 99% of osmium from the anionites. Recommendations for selection of eluents for better recovery of osmium from the anionites were elaborated. Centrifugal separation opens its new application fields in the Mining Industry. The up-to-date equipment for ultra-fine ore and concentrates grinding allows an efficient use of centrifugal concentration for micronic gold grains recovery. Moreover, advanced centrifugal concentrators are presented on the market: concentrators with continuous concentrate discharge designed both for ore and non-metallic minerals concentration process. The conducted tests proved the centrifugal concentration to be efficient process for gold recovery from finely ground concentrates and ores (less than 20 µm). Knelson concentrator application for such a fine material in different process circuits makes possible to raise the total gold recovery level of plants. In the circuits of coal plants and in course of coal slimes treatment the centrifugal concentration may be used before flotation in order to improve process performances. In the current energy-sensitive world, sustainable development in the mineral industry will require new, better and more efficient processes. Novel comminution methods, which offer the prospect of achieving the required outcomes of size reduction and mineral liberation at lower energy consumption, are continually being sought. In the past five years, extensive research using high voltage pulse electrical comminution technology has been carried out at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC), in collaboration with selFrag AG. The major outcome of this research is the development of the concept of pre-weakening ore particles by electrical comminution procedures to reduce the energy consumption in the downstream grinding circuit. The research has also verified the preferential liberation of valuable minerals by electrical comminution. Given the advantages, several potential applications of electrical comminution in the mineral industry are proposed, including AG/SAG mill feed pre-weakening, pebble treatment, ball mill feed pre-weakening, early recovery of the liberated valuable minerals, crack/micro crack generation for improved leaching, and smelter slag treatment. For the mineral industry to utilize electrical comminution, two emerging issues identified from the research need to be address. They are the energy consumption by electrical comminution in the locked cycle treatment and the facilities scale up necessary to move this technology from the laboratory to the plant. The studies carried out by the Russian researchers and those carried out jointly within some contracts with scientific organizations and companies of other countries, show that the electric pulse disintegration of materials (ED), proposed and investigated in detail in Russia (Kalyatsky, et al, 1980; Usov et al, 1987; Semkin et al, 1995; Usov and Tsukerman, 2000; Kurets et al, 2002) has been widely recognized and developed abroad (Andres, 1995; Inoue et al, 2000; Biela et al, 2008). The Russian and international journals and the proceedings of the conferences dealing with the electric pulse disintegration pay great attention to the principal principals of selective disintegration of materials. There is no, however, any information concerning both the technical means developed to implement the technique and the assessment of their performance, which would be necessary in objective assessment of the industrial use of the technology. The results of long-term studies of the technique and technologies of electric pulse disaggregation by research institutes such as Research Institute of High Voltages (Tomsk), Kola Science Centre of RAS (Apatity), Institute "Mekhanobr"(S.Pertersburg) described. Exploratory stands and technological installations are developed to carry out pilot tests and operations under production conditions. Basic circuits and classification of technical means electric pulse disintegration of the materials are proposed, the analysis of transportation schemes and classification of the material in the disintegration apparatus are given, construction of chambers for continuous stadial disintegration of ores and materials are presented. The features and technological efficiency of electric pulse disintegration of various types of ores, and the spheres of effective use of the method have been determined. About 90% of the barytes produced the world over is used for oil and gas drilling as weighting agent in drilling mud to control pressure, prevent blow out and provide lubrication. This is because of its unique properties like high specific gravity, water insolubility and intentness. India is one of the leading producers and exporters of barites. The Mangampeth Baryte deposit in Cuddapah district of Andhra Pradesh, India being the largest single deposit in the world having a reserves of about 80 million tonnes. Approximately 50% of the total reserves of grey barites of Mangampet deposit assays less than 92% BaSO4, the minimum stipulated grade for oil and gas drilling industries. To reach and recover the high grade barite, the overlying low grade has necessarily to be mined out and removed. At present this is being stacked separately at the mine site involving lot of labour and transport cost. Considerable barites is contained in the dumps adversely affecting the conservation and creating lot of environmental hazards. IBM being the premier organization in India in the field of conservation of minerals and environmental protection in mining has recognized the importance of adverse effect of these huge dumps at site. The Ore Dressing Division of IBM, Nagpur has characterized these dumps and developed the flotation process on a sample assaying 66% BaSO4 and 23.3% SiO2. The flotation concentrate obtained assayed 93.7% BaSO4, 2.38% SiO2 with BaSO4 recovery of 80% and meets the requirement of the oil industry. The flotation concentrate being non-wetable, can not be used as such as weighting agent, and hence the collector coating on the concentrate was removed either by acid treatment or heating to make it water wetable. The concentrate was 92% -325 mesh and having a specific gravity 4.3. The barites concentrates so produced meets the size, grade and specific gravity specifications required for use in oil drilling industry. Apart from the financial benefits the process augurs well for the commercial exploitation of these huge dumps in terms of (1) additional recovery of these valuable minerals and conservation, (2) reduction in dumps value, (3) improvement in environment and offering an excellent potential for export.

The interest in investigating the processing characteristics of mineral deposits in Norway has seen an upsurge in the last decade. One of the major areas of interest is a huge copper deposit, operated by NUSSIR ASA located in the Repparfjord Tectonic Window in the caledonides of west Finnmark. This study reports analysis of ore from the deposit for development and modifications in the flotation flowsheet for the NUSSIR ASA copper ore. The mineralogical characterization for the ore sample was achived by optical microscopy and Zeiss automated mineralogy while grinding characteristics were tested using Bond Index tests. The results confirmed the presence of Cu minerals in the form of chalcocite, chalcopyrite and bornite in the samples, which are mainly liberated in the – 105 µm size range. The majority of non-liberated copper sulphides associated with silica and the carbonates varies from 3 to 28 percent in the –250 µm samples . It is also observed that the copper minerals are uniformly distributed in all size ranges. Selective flotation of NUSSIR copper ore was performed in different size fractions with a motive to identify the correct liberation size and thus to obtain a copper concentrate meeting the quality requirements. The flotation experiments are essentially performed in two stages: the rougher and the cleaner stage. Mass balance calculations were performed showing that approximately 88 percent of copper can be obtained at the end of the process. Ultimately, overall circuit copper recoveries ranged between 83.5 to 88.1 % with a concentrate grade of 35 to 48 % Cu.

In the bauxite flotation process for desilication, the middling treatment mode is the important factor to raise the flotation recovery of the preparation concentrate. The middling treatment mode mainly depends on A/S and the size composition. However, similar ratio of A/S should not be the single factor of re-dressing, size composition plays an important role also. Re-dressing the middling mixed with the tailings of concentrated to the rough ground for desilication and the concentrate of scavenged to the fine ground for desilication to raise the recovery of 5.83%, when compared two flow sheet schemes.
