"The paper describes the results of stripping of copper production dusts by leaching with aqueous soda, nitric acid solutions and recovery from solutions resulting in the production of lead sulphate, tribasic lead sulfate (TBLS), ammonium perrhenate, zinc, copper-cadmium cake.The combination of two stripping operations under chosen optimal conditions allows the recovery of 98% rhenium, 82% lead, 92 % copper, and 96% zinc and cadmium each. The major amount of rhenium (~ 80%) is recovered at the carbonization stage, and other metals - at the nitric acid leaching stage.Lead sulfate was precipitated by mixing solutions resulting from carbonization and leaching. Tribasic lead sulfate was produced by dissolving lead sulfate in sodium hydroxide solutions. Rhenium was recovered from mother liquor resulting from lead sulfate precipitation by liquid-liquid extraction and zinc was recovered from raffinates. Trialkylamine (TAA) was used as an extractant for rhenium recovery and di-2- ethylhexylphosphoric acid was used for zinc recovery. Optimal liquid-liquid extraction parameters have been defined allowing the recovery of 96% rhenium in crude ammonium perrhenate and 94% zinc in sulfuric acid solution. Based on the experimental data, the flowchart for dust processing to produce salable products - lead, rhenium, zinc salts has been suggested."

Fine coal obtained from Kailuan mine served as the processing object of this study. This material was difficult to separate. A flotation rate experiment was designed to investigate the process distribution characteristics of size and density during fine coal flotation. Size and density analyses of five clean were studied. The mineral morphology of flotation rate experiment cleaning was observed through scanning electron microscopy. The fractions -0.074+0.045 mm and -0.045 mm exhibited the best practical floatability and presented the highest combustible body recovery rates, but the selectivity and natural floatability of these two fractions were the worst. The - 0.074 mm fraction has contaminated the clean coal from the early stage of flotation, and the cumulative clean coal ash of -0.074 mm reached up to 17.20%. The low and middle-density classes displayed varying flotation behavior, but the flotation yield difference was only nearly 3%. The middle-density class caused the clean coal to have high ash content. The poor selectivity of fine coals, middle-density fraction, and fine mud resulted in high-ash clean coals during flotation. Thus, improving the selectivity of fine coal, restraining the flotation of fine mud, and grinding the coal to decrease the middle density mass fraction to liberate clean coals can yield high-quality clean coals through flotation.

"Traditionally, the implementation of an automated advanced process controller in any mineral processing complex is a challenge, mainly due to the quality of resources and technologies required, the uniqueness of each control solution and the uncertainty of the engineering hours needed to complete the task. Thus, the use of advanced and proven control technology becomes a key factor when deploying the control strategy. However, success would still not be possible without the presence of common sense, process knowledge and fundamental process data. Minera Los Pelambres, taking advantage of such factors and its accumulated process experience, implemented a novel and successful combination of MPC (Multivariable Predictive Control) and advanced control for secondary grinding and regrinding stages at its copper concentrator plant. In both cases, the control objectives are: being capable of processing a variable feed from the upstream process while at the same time avoiding to become a process bottle neck and yet, maintaining an adequate product quality (in terms of size distribution) to the process downstream. Additionally, for the case of the vertical regrinding mill (vertimill), the control system should also be capable of keeping an adequate circulation load and making an efficient use of the available grinding power. In either case, extending hidrocyclones availability while maintaining their performance is a must, since both factors are required for process and maintenance purposes. Thus, the process control problem becomes one with a multi-variable type of process with multiple control objectives to satisfy simultaneously. In trying to solve it, many mineral processing operations have implemented basic or conventional control or even better yet, expert systems. Minera Los Pelambres believes that better and faster results can be achieved using a combination of MPC and advanced control. Such strategy was successfully implemented, reducing considerably process variability while maintaining high throughput and keeping the process well within constraints limits. Their control philosophy, implementation process, main results and their key performance indicators are discussed here."

In a flotation froth (and foam), air bubbles become larger due to coalescence, causing bubble size to increase, bubble surface area to decrease, and hence casing less hydrophobic particles to drop off to the pulp phase below. Thus, bubble coarsening provides an important mechanism by which product grades are increased. On the other hand, excessive bubble coarsening results in low recoveries. In the present work, a model describing the process of bubbles becoming coarser in a foam as they rise to the top by deriving a mathematical relation between the Plateau border area, which controls film drainage rate, and the lamella film thickness, which controls bubble-coalescence rate. The model has been derived by assuming that liquid drainage rate increases due to slip at the air/water interface, and that the critical rupture thickness is determined by the capillary waves created by thermal motion. The model developed in the present work can predict the bubble size ratio between the top and bottom of a foam as functions of aeration rate, foam height, and surface tension (frother dosage). The model predictions are in good agreement with the changes in bubble sizes measured using a high-speed camera.

"The mineral processing research community has devoted enormous efforts to the modelling of mineral separators over the last 50 years. While many efforts have been made to use only fundamental physics as a basis for the models, fluid flow patterns in separators are not simple while the motion of particle swarms through fluids is extremely complex.One of the simplest separators is the sluice, in which separation takes place in a flowing film a few millimetres thick. The particles are suspended by turbulent eddies and motion relative to the fluid takes place in so-called hindered settling mode.In an effort to test the extent to which fundamental fluid mechanics can provide a prediction of particle separation, a study on a simple parallel-sided sluice has been carried out using glass beads at various particle concentrations and flow rates.The actual particle separation taking place was compared to predictions made by first describing the fluid flow by a modified ‘law of the wall’ model.Particle concentration distributions were described using Hunt’s sediment transport model, assuming the particle eddy diffusion coefficient to be the same as that for the water. Settling velocities were calculated using either the Richardson and Zaki or Brauer and Thiele models. The latter takes into account particle size and density distributions and solids volumetric concentration.The resulting predictions of particle separation are remarkably good, even though the model does not model the local settling velocity in the slurry."

"Issues concerning effectiveness of the high-pressure comminution process in technological circuits of copper ore treatment were presented in the paper. Crushing processes taking place in high-pressure grinding rolls devices (HPGR) are currently one of the most efficient methods of hard ore size reduction in terms of the energy consumption. The HPGR products are characterized by a fine particle size and the micro-cracks formation in individual particles, which appear in downstream grinding processes, decreasing their energy consumption. The purpose of this paper was to analyse the effectiveness of a ball mill grinding process depending on the changeable conditions of run for the HPGR crushing process. The research programme carried out included crushing tests in the laboratory scale HPGR device at various settings of the operating pressure volume and selected qualitative properties of the feed material (i.e. particle size distribution). Particle size distribution analyses of all HPGR products were performed and in the next stage the material was a feed to the ball mill grinding process. Grinding process kinetics were investigated through the determination of mass recoveries of individual particle size fractions after defined grinding time intervals. The models, defining the grinding process effectiveness as a function of changeable conditions of HPGR process run, were determined on the basis of obtained results. Based on these models the optimal grinding time in a ball mill was specified which is, in turn, the basis for optimization of operation of the technological comminution circuits for a given material type. The obtained results proved that the application of HPGR devices in a given copper ore comminution circuit may improve the effectiveness of the downstream grinding process which leads to improvement of the entire circuit work efficiency through decreasing the process energy consumption and enhancing product size reduction."

The last few years have shown a significant increase in the demands for fine products, which means everything under 10µm. There are more and more applications requesting extremely fine ground powders leading to the development of several milling machines which are better adapted to the new products. Cost saving machinery is important for the worldwide competition. Especially the energy consumption is extremely important for any fine ground product. A worthwhile field for mechanical engineering companies is the dry milling machinery as there are not as many solutions available compared with wet milling applications. In many cases wet mil-ling is the only solution to reach the requested quality, but there are also a lot of applications which can be performed in a dry way on the premise that the right mill and classifier are available. Dry milling permits to save energy and allows to influence the particle size distribution more easily, as a classifier can be used in that case. This will significantly reduce production costs and can enable the production of new products with better properties. The Tower Mill is well-known already in the field of wet grinding. Recent research work and end user reports have shown clearly that this mill has a lot of advantages compared to a ball mill. Up to now this advantage is limited to wet grinding as only few mills have been used for dry grinding. There is no doubt about the efficiency of dry grinding, but new and improved feeding and discharg-ing systems have to be developed in order to enable the full range of its advantages. Especially the high production capacities are a challenge for mill and classifier designers. The Tower Mill with its special grinding mechanism allows to cope with very high feed rates, because machines with more than 1 MW are available. Improved grinding efficiency will decrease the circulation load through the classifier and also lead to smaller classifier sizes. Together with im-proved mills the classifier can work more efficiently because the feed material is finer. Results of a test center plant production will be shown together with a comparison between stan-dard machinery and the MaxxMill®. Preferential applications for each mill will be explained.

Water for domestic consumption is an essential right of society, which must be over secured. Water reclamation and reuse provides a unique and viable opportunity to augment traditional water supplies. As a multi-discipline and important element of water resource development and management, water reuse can help to close the loop between water supply and wastewater disposal. Effective water reuse requires integration of water and reclaimed water supply functions. During the coal mining activities, large quantities of water get contaminated and loses its potability characteristics. On an average, in coal mine operation, each coal mine discharges effluents at a rate of nearly 0.5 MGD and thereby wastage of nearly 50 MGD of water takes place per day from the famous Jharia Coal Field of the Dhanbad District. In this paper, attempt has been made to control the extremely high turbidity of mine waste water by using different coagulants and it is observed that ferrous sulphate is the most effective coagulants followed by alum, ferric sulphate and lime. Also combinations of coagulants are used for getting the optimal results. Further steps were also discussed to make this water potable and a scheme of low cost water supply system of mine waste water has been suggested under the Water Management Strategies. "The research is aimed at solving the problem of enrichment of sulphide ores, counting for more than 40% of the reserves in Russia. The aim of the research is to develop and scientifically substantiate the scheme for processing this type of ores in order to extract fine-dispersed noble metal particles (FNMP). In this work samples of sulfide carbonaceous ore and flotation concentrates were analyzed using complex precision methods of analysis: electron microscopy, spectral analysis with induction plasma, complex thermogravimetric analyzes, etc. Data on the composition of the organic constituent of the samples were obtained with the usage of complex thermogravimetric analysis. The presence of various types of kerogen and bitumen has been established. Experimental studies on the coarsening of FNMP from the initial ore and flotation concentrates using electromagnetic radiation have shown the effectiveness of this coalescence method. The data on the elemental composition of the samples and the amount of FNMP were obtained. Thus, studies on the extraction of FNMP from carbon sulphide ore have shown the possibility of effective usage of combination of electromagnetic action and classical enrichment methods to extract fine particles of noble metals. INTRODUCTION Due to the depletion of free-milling raw materials the involvement of new types of deposits is the strategy of developing mining industry of Russia. The black shale raw materials show interest as a non-traditional source of precious metals since its genetic and positional gold-carbon connection. Muruntau, Sukhoi Log, Bakyrchik, Natalkinsky, Nezhdaninskoye, Olimpiadinsky, Homsen and others are the examples of well-known deposits of the black shale formation [1]. In fact the main gold-dispersed regions of Russia are composed of black-shale strata. Review of literature [2-5] shows that in recent years in almost all deposits of the black shale formation metals of the platinum group (PGM) were detected that significantly increases their practical importance."

In Canadian oil sands processing, flotation is used to recover liberated bitumen droplets from oil sands slurries. Similar to conventional mineral flotation practice, a fundamental limitation of recovering bitumen from low grade oil sand ores is its slow and ineffective aeration of the liberated small bitumen droplets. Gas nucleation and cavitation could provide better mechanisms for accelerating bitumen-bubble attachment. A research program was undertaken to examine factors affecting spontaneous bubble nucleation on bitumen surfaces. The results demonstrate that surface hydrophobicity and existence of gas nuclei in process water play a critical role for bubble nucleation. While there are more bubbles nucleated on highly hydrophobic silanated glass surfaces than on moderately hydrophobic bitumen, bubble nucleation on clean hydrophilic glass surfaces is negligible. Heating process water up to 85 ~ 95oC (as used in commercial operation) or boiling tap water prior to gas nucleation tests is shown to remove sufficient amount of gas nuclei existing in the water, thereby drastically reducing the number of bubbles nucleated on bitumen. Enhancing gas nuclei formation in hot process water is identified as a promising strategy to improve bitumen-bubble attachment during oil sands conditioning, and hence to increase bitumen recovery from low grade ores.

"It is relatively well-established in the literature that the flotation of calcium minerals using fatty acids as collector is very sensitive to the process water composition. In particular, hard waters have often been reported to strongly reduce the target mineral recoveries due to the formation of insoluble compounds such as calcium and / or magnesium dioleate, thus reducing the amount of collector available for adsorption onto the mineral surface. In this study, the flotation of a fluorite pre-concentrate was performed with tall oil, an industrial collector essentially containing fatty acids. The tests were performed in a variety of synthetic waters to simulate multiple degrees of water hardness, and to differentiate the role of magnesium and calcium ions on the flotation performance. The flotation tests revealed that, under the studied conditions, a significant difference between flotation in calcium-rich and magnesium-rich waters was observed, suggesting strong ion-specific effects in the system. Specifically, calcium-rich waters slightly improved the fluorite recovery, whereas magnesium-rich waters caused a decrease in recovery by as much as 20%. This paper is focused on the flotation kinetics aspect of the system. This approach highlighted the interesting finding that calcium ions did not simply increase the fluorite recovery, but also significantly increased its flotation kinetics. The magnesium ions, on the other hand, had the exact opposite effect.INTRODUCTIONAs the mining industry is facing an increasing number of issues related to its fresh water consumption, the idea of using alternative water sources for mineral beneficiation is gaining significant momentum. As a result, a proper understanding of the role of water chemistry in flotation is becoming more and more urgent, leading to an increasing number of studies on this topic."

Beach Placer Ilmenite is an important source for production of titanium metal, titania slag and pigment grade titanium dioxide. Besides, these well known applications for which Ilmenite is mined and processed, there are other emerging processes that are being tried for obtaining highvalue products. Synthesis of Ilmenite based materials for varistor applications and direct electrochemical reduction of Ilmenite to produce ferrotitanium are two such attempts being discussed in this work. In this paper, recent efforts undertaken to study the electrical and magnetic characteristics are discussed. Ilmenite, FeTiO3, is one of the mixed-valence transition metalbearing minerals, inwhich Fe can be in two different oxidation states, Fe2+ and Fe3+.. Similarly, Ti can be in Ti3+ and Ti4+.Ilmenite is inherently suitable for making Varistors, which are devices, used for limiting the transient voltage surges in a circuit. Varistors produced from Ilmenite can withstand harsh environments seen in nuclear reactors and outerspace. Electrochemical reduction of Ilmenite can be used to prepare ferrotitanium directly without any reductant. The process essentially involves removal of oxygen from the mineral through electrolytic action using calcium chloride as electrolyte and graphite as anode. At a temperature of 950°C, it is shown to be possible that all the oxygen can be removed from the Ilmenite sample, which passes through the electrolyte, to form CO/CO2 at the anode. The process has immense potential for cost effective production of titanium metal as well. Results of the above developmental works are presented in this paper. Pilot plant tests of underground gold leaching from Maminskoye deposit oxide ores at a grade of 0,7 g/t Au were carried out. The underground leaching flow sheet includes Au dissolution by chlorine-containing solutions, Au adsorption from solution on active carbon, carbon concentrate ashing and calcine melting to produce high grade gold concentrate. The underground leaching system throughput was 15 m3 of solution per hour. Gold concentration in pregnant solutions was 0.12-0.13 mg/l. Gold recovery from solutions into carbon was in the range of 63-84%. It was demonstrated that the low Au recovery in the adsorption cycle was due to the presence in pregnant solutions of "active" chlorine, which destroys active carbon and causes a sharp decrease of the carbon loading capacity for gold. To improve the adsorption indices, previously dechlorinated pregnant solutions using bituminous coal or Na2S2O3, is recommended. Ion exchange process was tested as an alternative for gold extraction from dechlorinated solutions. In the testwork period, 4.4 kg of gold were produced with a chlorine consumption of 3.5 kg per 1 g of gold. During the tests a program of environmental protection measures was completed to provide the necessary safety precautions of the underground leaching works.

This paper describes the evaluation method of dispersion and coagulation of silica nano-particles by means of interactive force apparatus. The apparatus measures the size of fine particles in aqueous solution or organic solvent of high concentration and/or low optical transparency. Other conventional apparatus for size measurements (such as, apparatus utilizing dynamic light scattering) are difficult to measure the size of particles in such conditions accurately, due to multi-scattering of light in the sample solution or solvent. The apparatus measures the interactive force between two surfaces, i.e. the gold-coated glass hemisphere and the brass flat plate, (which is fixed at the bottom of the sample cell). The apparatus has three parts, i.e. main part (which consists of electric balance, hemisphere and flat plate), control part (i.e. personal computer, piezo-stage controller and voltage supplier), and detecting part (i.e. multi-meter and oscilloscope). During the measurement, electric field is applied between the hemisphere and flat plate, and thus dielectric particles are arranged toward the direction of electric field in the area between two plates. When the two plates are close to each other, two different forces (i.e. repulsive force and attractive force) will alternately act on particles due to the structure change of the particles. The repulsive force occurs when the structure of particles is stretched by compressive force; whereas the attractive force occurs when the aggregate structure is broken. The cycle of the repulsive and attractive forces is a primary size of particle or size of aggregate, which depends on the degree of agglomeration. The measured size of particles, which is varied depending on their degree of dispersion and coagulation, determined the characteristics of the silica particles. In this research work, the effect of size and concentration of particles in aqueous solution on the degree of dispersion and coagulation of the silica particles were investigated. Spherical silica particles were selected for this investigation due to their variety of size. This apparatus can be used to evaluate the degree of dispersion and coagulation of other nano-particles in various solvents in many process industries.

"The study of the properties of mineral processing suspensions is important in understanding how a circuit might behave. As soon as the predominantly dry ore enters a wet milling stage the ore properties undergo changes as a ‘slurry’ is created. Slurries can be classified in terms of their physical properties (particle density, solids concentration, particle size and size distribution, particle shape), and their flow properties such as rheology. Slurry flow regimes are classified into true homogeneous, pseudo homogeneous, heterogeneous and fully segregated, and only true homogeneous and pseudo homogeneous suspensions can be characterized by their flow structure. A class of the heterogeneous regime are the so-called dense phase or settling slurries - those which result in a clear water surface on standing, although they may approach a pseudo homogeneous state if suspended for a sufficient period of time. They are usually extremely difficult to characterize by their rheological properties alone and the rheological characterization of these slurries has always posed a problem, especially at higher concentrations. Previous rheological studies have focused on the individual concentrator units dealing with milling, classification, pumping, flotation, fine grinding, thickening.In this work an attempt was made to characterize two ore types (copper and a Platreef platinum ore) using a custom built Paterson and Cooke tube rheometer, at concentrations up to 43% by volume. After applying a turbulence correction, results showed Bingham plastic behavior. A conventional vane rheometer was then used to compare the rheological behavior of platinum concentrator streams. A size criteria was used to identify any rheologically dominant streams."

It is a well-known fact that usage of reverse cationic flotation in magnetite ores processing enables to improve the quality of magnetite concentrates. We designed an iron ore concentrate technology (with 70 -71 % of iron) including reverse cationic flotation in pneumo-mechanical flotators RIF (developed by RIVS Corporation, Russia) with good biodegradable etheramines as collectors for flotation of quartz. Practical application of high biodegradable flotation reagents decreases environmental impact risk of objects and enterprises of mining industrial complex. This work presents results of development of flotation technology for production of high quality ferruginous concentrates from magnetite ores of Russia and Ukraine deposits. 29% of the total ore mined in the Russian Federation for copper production is finely disseminated copper-zinc-pyrite ores of the Ural Region. Physical and chemical characteristics of pyrite copper-zinc ores make for difficulties in obtaining high indices during processing. At present, the authors have elaborated the technology to improve the quality of copper concentrates up to 20.0% for the ones obtained during pyrite copper-zinc ore processing (based on the example of the ore mining and processing enterprise ?Uchalinsky GOK?, Russian Federation). There are examples of use of fair-sized pneumo-mechanical flotation machines by modernization of processing plants. "The report presents the summary of the JSC Irgiredmet’s activities in the field of preconcentration of ores. As of 2018, the Institute has almost 40-years’ experience in this area. Over the years, Irgiredmet has done a lot of work – from development to implementation of new technologies of ore piece sorting and concentration based on X-ray radiometric separation (XRRS). INTRODUCTION Preconcentration has been a challenging issue of the mining industry over the last decades. The implementation of this technology can significantly increase mining efficiency. The main application of preconcentration is improvement of mined ores quality, however new and more complex issues have arisen with the evolution of the technology. Irgiredmet has started to develop an efficient preconcentration technology for gold-bearing and rare-metal ores 40 years ago. The X-ray radiometric method widely used at that date as a method of elements determination in geology and geophysics become the ground for this work (1). Since that time, the Irgiredmet Institute has developed and significantly improved the technology of piece ore sorting, or XRRS (2-5), that is currently also known as the X-ray fluorescence method. The progress of the XRRS development achieved by Irgiredmet in cooperation with Rados LLC, Tekhnoros LLC (Krasnoyarsk), Rados-Service LLC and CJSC Tekhnogen (Ekaterinburg) has proved efficiency and applicability of the XRRS technology for processing a wide range of minerals and solving of various technological problems (7-9) compared to other radiometric methods (6). Furthermore, obtained results are supported by numerous studies, trials and implementations. The significance of ore preconcentration for greenfield and brownfield projects determined the establishing a new subdivision of Irgiredmet, the XRRS Technology Center (XRRS TC), that has provided the Institute with a completed range of processing technologies, from preconcentration to producing final products. Over the past few years, the XRRS Technology Center has carried out studies and testing of a numerous (more than 100) projects, mines and deposits of gold-bearing ores, rare metal ores (Be, Ta, Nb, W, Mo), base metal ores (Cu, Sb, Zn, Pb), ferrous metal ores (Fe, Ti, Cr), rough diamonds and coal. The XRRS Technology Center performs various specific studies and testing not only in Russia, but as well as in Kazakhstan, Georgia and Mongolia. Mines and companies from Chile, India, China, Iran and other countries also take an active interest in the XRRS technology."

This paper presents the consequences of modernization and expansion of process plant by implementing SAG and Ball Mill and Carbon-in-pulp technology at the Hutti Gold Mine. From the inception of the process plant, it has undergone many changes for the improvement. In the beginning, only gravity recovery of gold was carried out by using Pebble Mills and Strake Tables. Later amalgamation, Cyanidation and Zinc precipitation and finally Carbon-in-pulp gold recovery system was implemented. Grinding plant was modernized by implementing SAG and Ball Mill and Knelson concentrator for free gold recovery as a result, the production rate, rate of recovery, reduced man power, Modernization and expansion of process plant has also yielded in safe and smooth running of the plant. The ever increasing demand for energy and the progressive depletion of crude oil resources, have renewed interest in oil shale as an alternative fuel resource. Weathered oil shale samples were assembled from El-Nakheil phosphate mine in Quseir area, Eastern desert, Egypt. The oil shale samples were prepared and analyzed by XRD (X-ray diffraction), XRF (X-ray fluorescence spectrometry), and optical microscopic techniques. Rock-Eval pyrolysis and total organic carbon were used to study shale hydrocarbon potential. A leaching procedure using inorganic and organic acids was used to selectively dissolve the oil shale associated ash forming minerals. XRD results showed that calcite is the dominant carbonate mineral, whereas primary silicate minerals are quartz and montmorillonite. SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) observations indicated that the organic matter is dispersed throughout the rock matrix. The acid soluble fraction upon leaching was determined to be 37.59 and 42.74 wt% by using 5% HCl and 10% HCl, respectively. The TOC was increased from 20.78 to 29.88 and 34.09 wt% by using 5% HCl and 10% HCl, respectively.
