"The solution for the treatment of the EAFD has not yet been fully achieved. Some of this dust has still not found an appropriate final destination. Large consortium treatment plants are quite expensive both in terms of investment and operating cost. Meanwhile, the tolling expenses for steel production companies are becoming very important, causing them to look for alternatives. Some steel plants are looking to close their production loop by internal treatment of their dust. Some years ago, Engitec began studying the coupling of the EZINEX® Process, an ammonium chloride electrolysis to recover the zinc contained in the EAFD, with the INDUTEC® Process, a pyro process based on an induction furnace that can convert EAFD into a C.Z.O. similar to the Waelz oxide. The combination of these two processes provides an alternative to the existing treatment options and is particularly interesting for relatively small capacities. In this paper, we would like to give the latest update about these two processes and their possible integration INTRODUCTION Zinc is contained in numerous wastes and secondary raw materials that can be thought of as high zinc concentrate mines. This is a very interesting source of Zn that is typically easily exploitable. Unfortunately, only a portion of these materials are currently processed to recover the metal value, while stabilized or unstabilized landfilling is often the final destination. Pyrometallurgical processes are mainly used to convert the zinc into crude zinc oxide (CZO). The various processes are very similar and characterized by the fact that the zinc bearing materials are usually submitted to a thermal treatment [1] in which the zinc is reduced, vaporized and re-oxidized producing CZO. This material not only contains zinc oxide, but also relatively high concentrations of heavy metals. Many potential CZO sources, such as electric arc furnace dust (EAF), galvanizing ashes, brass foundry and converters fumes also contain chlorides, fluorides and alkali metals that will transfer to the CZO. The classic example is the Waelz oxide [2]. This CZO is an intermediate product that must be transformed into zinc salts or zinc metal. Until now, the conversion to zinc metal is done through two main processes: the sulphate leaching and electrowinning system and the Imperial Smelting Process (ISP). ISP is facing a crisis for technical and economic reasons that has led to the closing of most of the existing plants. In any case, before being fed to one of these two processes, the CZO must be treated to eliminate or reduce some of the contained impurities. In particular, the halides are most harmful to these processes."

"Flotation process applied for concentration of unoxidized ferruginous quartzites by PJSC Mikhailovsky GOK (MGOK) is based on wet magnetic separation of strong magnetic minerals. However quality of the resulting concentrate (Fe65-66%) is insufficient for production of metallics. Quality upgrade of magnetite concentrate via flotation has been implemented by MGOK to produce premium quality magnetite concentrate.Flotation is a challenging process due to sensitivity to varied amounts of reagents, fine and coarse mineral ratio, particle contact (retention) time and temperature of feed. Tomah’s PA-14 reagent (USA) has proven efficient for application in flotation of MGOK’s magnetite concentrate.Objective of this work is to select and prove applicability of selective agents for flotation upgrade of magnetite iron ore concentrate.Series of flotation tests has been carried out with application of new highly selective collecting agents produced by Akzo Nobel (Sweden), Clariant (Germany) as well as Akzo Nobel’s and Tomah’s cationic collector mix to improve performance efficiency of flotation process. Tomah’s flotation agents and Akzo Nobel’s Lilaflotproved to be the most effective for purposes of concentrate quality upgrade to Fe69.0% via flotation.Testing Method: Following scientific research methods were applied for testwork: system analysis, mathematical statistics, observation, comparison, trial (experiment).To determine key process factors a series of pilot tests was carried out. Most of the testwork was performed by PJSC Mikhailovsky GOK’s Central Process Laboratory.Work Results:-optimized flotation performance modes were defined to ensure production of three types of low-silica concentrate, i.e. containing SiO25%, SiO24% and below SiO23% by weight. Most efficient selective agents applicable for flotation have been defined. Mixture of higher aliphatic amines has proven to intensify selective flotation of quartz. It enables higher yield of chamber product maintaining desired quality of concentrate.Achieved process operation and performance factors have been revaluated.Value for Advancement and Expansion of Mineral Processing:Flotation of concentrate has enabled expansion of PJSC Mikhailovsky GOK’s production capacity, improved production quality, helped to maintain sustainability and competitive advantage of the company."

A tertiary amine containing polyamine in its back bone was grafted to exfoliated graphite oxide by means of a series of chemical reactions.The synthesized amine functionalized polyaniline grafted to exfoliated graphite oxide (EGAMPANI) was characterized using various techniques such as, FTIR, TGA, Raman, and X-Ray diffraction.The synthesized EGAMPANI was blended with carbon paste electrode, and used to study the response of Hg2+ in acetate buffer solution.Preliminary analysis showed that the anodic current intensity using the EGAMPANI modified electrode was higher during a potential sweep and 10-4 M concentration of mercury could be detected which could be improved to 10-6 M using anodic stripping voltammetric technique. "The characterization of reagent-mineral interactions in flotation systems of finely intergrown ores holds difficult challenges for the applicability of standard techniques like Hallimond tube tests and contact angle experiments or renders them impossible due to a lack of sufficient samples in terms of quality and quantity. This disadvantage may not apply to more sophisticated techniques, but these often do not work in an aqueous environment. We present the utilization of an atomic force microscope with a hydrophobic colloidal probe to characterize the wettabilities of individual mineral domains of an ore sample, while additional spectral information is gathered by Raman spectroscopy. The exemplary ore sample investigated is mainly containing cassiterite and quartz, therefore the reference measurements like Hallimond tube tests and contact angle experiments were carried out with this binary system as a comparison. The focus of the study lies in the correlation of data gathered by the atomic force microscope and the Raman spectrometer with data from standard techniques. Finally, the applicability of the colloidal probe atomic force microcopy technique for reagent-mineral investigations is critically evaluated.INTRODUCTIONThe focus of this paper is the application of colloidal probe atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM) for theinvestigation of reagent-mineral interactions on a binary system of cassiterite and quartz. This and similar concepts using hydrophobic AFM probes have been applied by multiple authors (Rudolph and Peuker, 2014a; Rudolph and Peuker, 2014b; Wada et al., 2017; Xie et al., 2017). The hydrophobic interaction is the main interacting mechanism for the hydrophobic colloidal probe with hydrophobic sample surfaces and the long range attractive component has been accounted to nanobubbles on the interacting surfaces (Yakubov et al., 2000). More detailed information on nanobubbles are available in two reviews compiled by Attard and Hampton (Attard, 2003; Hampton and Nguyen, 2010). This paper is based on the work by Rudolph and Peuker comparing different AFM based measuring concepts, additionally gathering data with Raman spectroscopy and correlating results of microflotation and CPAFM measurements (Rudolph and Peuker, 2014a; Rudolph and Peuker, 2014b)."

The coking coal or clean coal from raw material division, Tata Steel Ltd. is a prime source of energy for inhouse steel making. Coal reserves of semi soft coking coal at West Bokaro is beneficiated by dense media cyclone and froth flotation processes to produce clean coal. In dense media cyclone process two byproducts-middling and rejects are also produced along with clean coal. With the growing demand for clean coal, it becomes imperative to maximize the recovery of clean coal in beneficiation processes. This will help, not only in reduction in cost of production, but also in raw resource conservation, and proper utilization. In this context, a case study was conducted at West Bokaro to identify opportunities for clean coal recovery from by-products. This paper mainly discusses the process for recovery of clean coal from byproducts and study of further liberation of clean coal from byproducts for economic consideration.

An extra-refractory gold ore in China belongs to Carlin Type Gold Ore which is not only submicroscopic but also rich in arsenic and organic carbon. They have been proved that its floatability is not good enough and the gold in the ore could not be leached almost if it was not pretreated. The tests for the ore were carried out in accordance with flotation-concentrate preoxidation-cyanidation(or CIL) processes in order to exploit the mine. Two new depressants were discovered in the flotation tests and improved concentrate grades from about 20g/t to 32~50g/t. The methods of the concentrate preoxidation tests were alkaline atmospheric oxidation, acidic atmospheric oxidation, acidic pressure oxidation, roasting oxidation?biooxidation. The cyanidation tests after the concentrate preoxidation have proved the gold extraction of the pressure oxidation to be the highest(92.5%) and that of roasting secondary(89.3%). After fuller techno-economic comparison, it is suggested that the flotation-pressure oxidation or roasting-CIL process should be the most optimal for treating the ore. The gold recoveries of the ore were 83% for the pressure oxidation and 80% for the roasting respectively.

This paper discusses two mineralogy characteristics that may affect the flotation of sulfide ore. The first one, process mineralogy study on a Cu-Ni sulfide ore shows that valleriite and tochilinite are incline to form on chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and serpentine surface, and the further guess is that the formation of valleriite and tochilinite may also causes the serpentine transform to talc, so the serpentine surface is a phase of talc or a transition phase from serpentine to talc and this enhances the flotability of the gangue minerals. The second discussion on the flotation behavior of the sulfide minerals from the point of view of the mineral semiconductor character.

The chelating reagents are used as effective collectors in wolframite flotation, and certain metal cations need to be added using chelating collectors so as to activate valuable minerals and obtain good flotation indexes. Different metal cations will result in different reactivity with collectors, in order to select the effective activator in BHA flotation of wolframite, the activation effectiveness of different metal cations on wolframite ((Fe,Mn)WO4) flotation were studied using pure minerals. The results showed that the wolframite activation by Pb2+was the best among the selected cations. The maximum flotation recovery of wolframite was found to be 95.58 % under conditions of 100mg/LBHA and 1×10-4mol/L of Pb2+at pH 9. The dosage of Pb2+needs to be controlled in an optimum range. Also, the activation mechanism of Pb2+ on BHA flotation of wolframite was investigated by measurements of contact angle, zeta potential, adsorption capacity and IR spectroscopy. It was found that Pb2+ could chemically adsorb onto the wolframite surface improving the flotability of wolframite and enhancing the adsorption of BHA on wolframite. When the dosages of BHA and Pb2+ were 100 mg/L and 1×10-4 mol/L, the adsorption quantity of BHA on wolframite sharply increased up to 0.30 mg/L at pH 9 compared with wolframite treated with only BHA.

"A mechanistic model for tumbling mills was developed during PhD studies at the JKMRC. The concept was presented at the IMPC of 2014, followed by progress in a sub-process of the model presented at the IMPC of 2016. Additionally, a number of papers on the sub-models and breakage function have been published. This paper provides a consolidated summary of the outcomes and status of the model. The overall model structure is presented along with the sub-models such as appearance functions, breakage rate functions, energy distribution, transport, and multicomponent grinding interaction model. The strengths and capabilities of the model structure as achieved to date are presented. The gaps in knowledge and sub-processes are also presented, providing a guide to the areas that require further research and development. It is proposed that the approach developed in this paper provides a structure that can accommodate future mechanistic, dynamic mill model evolution that can incorporate the latest research outcomes and provide a platform to test modelling improvements. This can assist in substantially improving the predictive mill modelling capability in the industry, the importance of which should not be underestimated for this workhorse of mineral processing.INTRODUCTION Grinding is almost the largest single energy-consuming process in the mineral processing industry, which was estimated that about 0.2% of global, and 1.3% of Australia’s electricity is consumed by comminution of gold and copper ores (Ballantyne and Powell, 2014). Although there are some relatively new grinding mills, such as stirred mills, vibrating mills and HPGRs (High-Pressure Grinding Rolls), etc., tumbling mills, as the traditional grinding facilities, are more extensively used."

"Fine free gold at a size of minus 250-100 µm can be effectively recovered from mineral materials (buried clay placers, saprolites, gold-bearing aggregates, technogenic sands etc.), or MM, using some developed and implemented in practice cost-effective basic technological schemes of MM processing at every stage: exploration, main concentration processes, upgrading of gravity concentrates etc. Such technologies are based on mineral materials composition, different content of fine gold mass fractions, and include improved two-stage sluicing technology, jigging technology, advanced technology and integrated technology. The main operation principle of the given technologies is gravity concentration. They provide recovery of fine gold of any size from MM, including gold finer than 100 µm, using concentration systems and plants with a capacity of 1-2 and up to 100-200 m3 per hour. Selection of a cost-effective technology depends on its technical and economic viability regarding to mineral material composition, optimum performance and concentration rate. The developed technologies of mineral materials concentration establish a balance between technological, technical and economic factors, and ensure profitable development of deposits containing free gold and characterized by a complex composition of concentrating material. Free gold recovery with these systems increases by 2.0-2.5 times for gold particles at a size of minus 250+100 µm and 10-30 times for gold particles of minus 100 µm, compared to conventional sluicing systems. The Irgiredmet Institute has developed and supplies primary concentrate washing machines for upgrading gravity concentrates of up to 100 mm in size, with a capacity of 1.0-5.0 m3/h, fitted with various production equipment including pyro- and hydrometallurgical systems. Additionally, the Irgiredmet Institute develops and manufactures systems of mechanized processing of geological and technological samples (UOMP; registered design certificate No.27505, Russia) designed for complete recovery of free gold in the process of geological samples handling and decreasing of a human factor influence. A system includes a package of technologically associated disintegration, classification and concentration equipment with some “know-how” elements that provide effective recovery of fine gold at the exploration stage. A number of Irgiredmet’s patented technologies and systems (patents of the Russian Federation) have no equivalents in the field of mineral processing and provide designing of technologically practical and cost-effective flowsheets that offer higher recovery of gold of different sizes (fine gold), at every stage of processing of mineral materials including basic concentration processes, upgrading and exploration etc."

Oxiana Sepon?s mineral processing facility in south central Laos produces copper cathode using leach-autoclave-SX/EW flotation technology. Pyrite recovery in the flotation circuit is critical to the operation, as it is used to generate acid for the leach circuit. However, low pyrite recovery has been an ongoing challenge in the flotation circuit. Tailings characterization work done by Ian Wark Research Institute showed that the pyrite losses to the tail are made up of a combination of coarse liberated particles and finer particles that have been coated by clay fines. In December of 2005, a joint Cytec-Oxiana technical program was initiated to address the pyrite recovery issue. A series of diagnostic tests were performed in the Cytec Stamford Research Facility using synthetic plant water showing that the collector was precipitating as a metal salt, and was un-available for mineral attachment. The tests also identified several collector chemistries that would likely be robust in the Sepon low pH, high dissolved metal ion environment, and will not complex with ferric, ferrous, or copper in solution. With the support of the Sepon on-site engineers, an extensive, successful laboratory program was completed, which then was followed by on plant testing that showed a step wise improvement in pyrite recovery.

The flotation behavior of kaolinite and diaspore using N, N-diethyl dodecyl amine (DEN12) and N, N-dimethyl dodecyl amine (DRN12) as collector have been investigated through flotation experiments. The mechanism of adsorption of two tertiary amine collectors on surface of kaolinite and diaspore were investigated by FTIR spectral, Zeta potentials measurements and calculation of molecular orbital energy. It has been found that DEN12 and DRN12 have stronger collecting power to kaolinite and weaker collecting abilityto diaspore than DDA. Kaolinite and diaspore in bauxite ores can be separated by using DEN12 and DRN12 as collectors at pulp pH below 8 and 6, respectively. The results of zeta potentials and calculation of molecular orbital energy indicated that the adsorption strength on kaolinite surface is in the order DEN12>DRN12>DDA and the adsorption strength on diaspore surface is in the order DDA>DEN12>DRN12. FTIR spectral analysis and Zeta potentials approve that the action between kaolinite and tertiary amine collector is strong electrostatic adsorption and that of diaspore is weak electrostatic adsorption in the range of pH 5~6.

"The processing of copper gold ores is one of the major issues of gold-mining industry in the beginning of 21st century. In this case, application of ammoniacal cyanidation process for this type of mineral raw materials deserves special attention. Irgiredmet Institute has carried out a wide range of studies on ammoniacal cyanidation process and evaluated the possible commercial use of this process for Russian operating plants. Copper gold-bearing ore from a current Russian deposit was studied. The content of gold and copper in the ore is 9.4 g/t and 0.4%, respectively. Based on the results of preliminary test work, a flow sheet was developed. It included gravity concentration followed by cyanidation of the gravity tailings using CIP. The flow sheet provides sufficient total gold recovery (91.5%). However, this technology has disadvantages, such as high specific consumption of reagents: 4.5 kg/t NaCN and 13.5 kg/t Ca(OCl)2 the ore and the increased gold grade in the liquid phase of the tails slurry (0.2 g/t). In order to improve cyanidation process parameters, test work on gravity tails processing using ammoniacal cyanidation was carried out. After the test work was completed, ammoniacal cyanidation flow sheet for copper gold-bearing ores was developed. Leaching conditions were optimized using recycled process solutions. Recommendations on gold recovery from the solutions and tails detoxification are given. The proposed flow sheet provides 91.5% gold recovery. In this case, compared to the conventional option, the consumption of cyanide decreases by 3-4 times.INTRODUCTION The technology of precious metals recovery from gold-bearing ores is based on cyanidation. This accounts for up to 90% gold recovery and the significant portion of silver (Lodeischikov, 1999). However, there exists the category of so called refractory ores. They are not amenable to direct cyanidation (without using additional expensive processes), or they are characterized by low indices of metals recovery and high consumption of reagents. The latter also include copper gold ores. Their deposits can be found extensively both worldwide and in Russian Federation. A feature of these ores is that they contain not only gold but also copper. It is considered not only as a valuable component but also as a harmful mineral impurity that hinders gold cyanidation, gold precipitation from the solutions by cementation onto zinc dust and adsorption onto activated carbon (CIL, CIP-processes), detoxification of cyanide bearing effluents."

"The recovery of copper and iron from carbonaceous sulfide ore is of economic and environmental interest despite its processing difficulty. Hydrometallurgical methods can be used to concentrate sulfide metals of these hard-to treat ores in a simple and eco-friendly manner. In this study, high pressure acid leaching process was comprehensively studied to dissolve metals from an ore with organic carbon and carbonaceous gangue material using autoclave equipment. The sample used for the experiment was reduced to an average particle size of 75 µm after undergoing flotation to reduce carbonaceous gangue minerals. A comparative study on two leaching reagents of sulfuric acid and iron sulfate and their dosage was used to observe dissolution of copper and iron. Other parameters of temperature (90-170 0C), solid-liquid ratio (1:10, 1:5, 1:3 and 1:1) were investigated through kinetic studies to access the influence of organic carbon and carbonaceous material on recovery of copper and iron. Materials balancing analysis was used to evaluate the efficiency of metal dissolution. The effects of parameters on leaching rate and concentration was demonstrated. Results obtained from the experiment indicated low concentrations of copper and iron in pregnant leached solutions, which was attributed to acid consumption by organic carbon and carbonaceous material in feed. However, the high efficiency rates of 92.4% and 86.3 % for copper and iron respectively in sulfuric acid can be concluded that leaching of concentrates of carbonaceous ore is possible provided system control on type of acid, pH and temperature. The purpose of this research is important in understanding mechanism involved in dissolution of copper and iron in concentrates of carbonaceous ore and marks an improvement in leaching of highly contaminated ores."

Grinding is the most energy consuming step in mineral processing, however, it is still poorly understood and its efficiency is difficult to monitor. Mill performances are traditionally measured at the mill discharge, on the basis of a mass percentage passing a certain sieve. This approach does not reflect what happens to the fines through milling. On another hand, if many macroscopic parameters, such as the percent solids of the pulp, its viscosity, or its mean residence time in the mill are known to be related to grinding efficiency, the link between these parameters and particle size distribution (PSD) is still unclear. Here, a methodology is established to understand the effect of ball mill operating conditions on particle size and shape distribution in the grinding process. The study focuses on the particular case of an Upper Group 2 (UG-2) platinum ore concentrator. Due to the very low grade of sulphide and PGM (Platinum group metals) in UG-2, grinding mechanisms are entirely control by gangue minerals. These two minerals have contrasted properties and PGM content and these properties immediately affect the entire recovery process. So, the grinding of both gangue minerals is studied on a size by size basis. At particle scale, three parameters are addressed: particle size, particle composition and particle shape. The specific behavior of chromite and silicate grains is demonstrated. As a conclusion, this study gives some clues to operate ball mills in a more efficient manner regarding chromite issue in the processing of UG-2. "IsaMill™ has been in operation in the recent past for fine grinding of low grade ores to extract non-ferrous minerals. IsaMill™, typically, consists of a series of uniformly spaced identical disks mounted on a rotating shaft which is encased in an outer shell. The mill offers high energy efficiency for fine grinding and an inherent scalability. But, it encounters certain operational challenges such as non-uniform distribution of grinding media coupled with high wear rate of the disks and solid walls of the mill at specific locations—which adversely affect the mill performance. To circumvent these operational challenges, design modification of the disks through heuristics, by introducing a reduced diameter disk (RDD) at specific locations, is a common practice in industry. But there is no systematic scientific study in this regard. In the current work, we developed a discrete element method (DEM) based model and simulated for the IsaMill™ operation to study the effect of RDD on the efficiency of the mill and wear rate of the solid walls and disks. Since the first set of disks experience the high wear rate due to the high loading of the charge, the RDD was introduced at the first two disks. The simulations were performed at different diameters of the RDDs and at different media loadings. The performance of the mill was analyzed based on the power consumption, the wear rate on disks and the distribution of media particles inside the mill. Besides, the performance variables such as mean velocity of media particles and total impact energy provided useful insights into the milling operation. It was observed that the reduction in disk diameter yields lower wear rate of the disks at the cost of decrease in power draw at a constant high media loading. Whereas, when the media loading was decreased, the amount of wear and power drawn was comparable for both the most reduced and least reduced disk diameters. Therefore, there is an optimum choice of RDD for a given mill loading to maximize the mill performance while reducing the wear rate of the disks."

"By the “HGMS-gravity separation-Flotation” combined technology, a Ta-Nb-Sn concentrates with the grades of Ta2O5 10.00%, Nb2O5 9.13% and Sn 42.62% at the recovery of 44.73% , 9.13% and 14.62% respectively , a Li concentrate with Li2O 3.11% at the recovery of 51.83% and a feldspar product are obtained. All the value elements are recovered. INTRODUCTION Tantalum and niobium widely used in electronics, atomic energy, aerospace and chemical industries with the advantages of high melting point, good ductility, low vapor pressure, strong corrosion resistance and high thermal conductivity are important strategic resources which occupy a special position in rare metals (Crockettand, 1993; GAO and Zou, 2004; LI and HUANG, 2012). China's tantalum and niobium resources are poor, and most of them are low grade, fine grain size, complex composition, and polymetallic associated with refractory mineral resources (GAO and Qiu,2013; Liang and Li, 2016). The Yifeng Lion Ore containing lithium and other rare metals (tantalum, niobium and tin) is an important lithium polymetallic deposit in China Jangxi province. While extensive previous studies have settled on the recovery of lithium minerals by flotation only for the extremely low grade of Ta, Nb and Sn. The regular gravity concentration is used, and the recovery of tantalum niobium is low. This paper sets out to investigate a combined flowsheet of “high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS),-gravity separation-flotation” to effectively comprehensively recover the Li, Ta, Nb, Sn and the feldspar resources in the Yifeng Lion Ore.ORE PROPERTIES Chemical analysis The run of mine comes from Jiangxi Yifeng Lion ore. The main elements of the ore chemical analysis results shows in Table 1. From Table 1, the grades of lithium and rubidium are relatively high, but the grades of tantalum and niobium are lower than the industrial grade; feldspar with high content of potassium and sodium and low content of iron can be used as high-quality ceramic raw materials."

"In Chile, the evaluation to reprocess tailings for elements other than the traditional Cu, Mo, Au, and Ag, as well as projects to implement long-term monitoring of mining residue sites are key elements of the government’s roadmap laid out for the mining industry for the next two decades. Characterization routines for tailings and mining residues in general have to be adapted from traditional ore and gangue mineral and micro-chemical studies. This contribution summarizes key aspects for the regional mining industry for a basic characterization of tailings with emphasis on small- to medium-size operations with limited in-house facilities and funds to carry out extensive characterization programs. The oldest tailings in Chile were deposited almost a century ago; this fact gives importance to the recovery of past ore /gangue feed information, process circuits and changes (e.g. acid to alkaline flotation), process water provenance and recovery, meteorological registers, and routines of filling a tailings impoundment. Basic characterization should include X-ray fluorescence spectrometry combined with laser diffraction (LD) granulometry followed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM) and automated mineral analysis (AMA) on a reduced set of samples identified by hierarchical cluster analysis. For this detailed stage, only coarse tailings are recommended for direct a study by microscopy and automated mineralogy (P80 >100 µm); for fine tailings (P80 ~30 µm) a combination of XRD and deposit type adapted sequential extraction are more informative options. In particular, for XRD of clay phases, losses of crystallinity may result in deviation of spectra from standard reference phases due to prolonged storage. To monitor surface alteration, scanning electron microscopy can be complemented by Raman spectroscopy to detect residual reagents on mineral surfaces. For reactivity modeling BET measurements are essential."

As a kind of collector, Xanthates are generally used to make sulfide minerals hydrophobic in flotation process. Xanthate adsorption on a galena surface has been widely studied experimentally. In this paper, DFT methods were employed to investigate the local adsorption interactions about the collectors,such as ethyl xanthate (CH3CH2OCS2?, EO) and ethyl trithiocarbonate (CH3CH2SCS2?, ES), absorbing on two different PbS clusters. From the results, it can be easily found that, on the edge or at the apex, both collectors, with two S atoms bidentate coordinating on the clusters, have surprising interaction energies, while on the surface, its interaction is relatively weak in the form of monodentate ligand. NBO analysis results reveal that there is at least a covalence bond with sulfur atom about 10% and lead atom about 90% when the absorbed lead is on the lattice edge or at apex, but, if the absorbed lead is on the lattice surface, no covalence band would be found. Meanwhile, the S-Pb bond, formed by the absorbed Xanthate and galena lattice, seems to have much more covalence characteristic than that formed in the PbS lattice inner. Furthermore, those data also imply that the difference of the collecting effect between the EO and the ES may be not notable, because of the similar distance and the interaction energy for the same interaction mode.
