"On the da y shift in Number One Mine at Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, on May 3, 1887, William Griffiths, a coal miner with many years experience, fired a shot to advance the face of the crosscut. A flame ran out for a distance of fifteen feet along the roof and then extended up the slope for ten to twelve feet, and although many would have called this a blowing out shot, Griffiths said it was just a feeder. ""A blower"", he said, ""would have caused an explosion."" 1There was no explosion. Griffiths reported gas and the area was cleared for three hours and then work resumed. When the shift changed at 3:00 p.m., the fireman reported all places clear of gas and the ventilation good.2The ventilation in Number One Mine was the best anyone had ever seen. The air in the mine was almost too cold. The current was so strong that it sometimes blew out the flame on the miners' fish oil lamps. It delivered five to six hundred cubic feet of air for every man and animal working in the mine. The law required only one hundred cubic feet 3The miners considered Number One to be relatively safe. The manager was proud of the mine and its up-to-date equipment"". Recently, there had been reports from France and America about the explosiveness of coal dust, but the manager did not think his mine was sufficiently dusty to be dangerous.5 The dust lay thick on the floor of the mine. Sometimes when a shot was fired the dust rose in great clouds. When a miner was shovelling it, the dust would billow up and be carried off by the current of air. The dust was also in the roof and in the stopings, put there intentionally to fill up the spaces and prevent the accumulation of methane gas."

ROASTING is usually thought of as a process in which finely crushed or ground ore is heated with air in a suitable furnace in which the ore is rabbled or agitated in such a way as to insure complete reaction between the oxygen of the air and the oxidisable constituents of the ore. Roasting in this sense is used only to a very limited extent in the iron and steel industry. This is because, in most iron ore deposits mined today, the ore is of a type that does not require roasting. Where this process is used, it is usually because of some special circumstance, such as a peculiar economic condition, that warrants it. If roasting is looked upon in the broader sense as a gas-solid chemical reaction carried out at an elevated temperature in which both gaseous and solid products are formed, then the process is used in the iron and steel industry to a greater extent

"It is crucial to understand the mechanism of the collector interacting with the mineral surface in the presence of water molecules, which could influence the relaxation and electronic properties of sulphide mineral surface due to the proximity effect for narrow band gap of semiconductors. The adsorptions of three typical collector molecules (xanthate, dithiocarbamate and dithiophosphate) on the sulphide mineral surfaces in the absence and presence of water molecule have been simulated by density-functional theory (DFT). The calculated results show that the adsorptions of collectors on clean mineral surface in vacuum are not in agreement with the observed flotation behaviours. The presence of water molecules has a great influence on the adsorption of collectors. The analysis of density of states of the mineral surface atom suggests that the adsorption of water molecules could influence the electronic properties of mineral surface and consequently influence the adsorption between the surface and the collector molecule.INTRODUCTIONIn the separation of multi-metal sulphide ores, the selectivity of a collector is a key factor for the efficient recovery of the aimed mineral. Xanthate, dithiocarbamate (DTC) and dithiophosphate (DTP) are the most common collectors used in the flotation of sulfide minerals. Generally, xanthate exhibits powerful collecting property but lack of selectivity. While dithiophosphate and dithiocarbamate show the good selectivity in the lead and copper sulphide mineral flotation. The mechanisms of these collectors interacting with the sulphide mineral had been attracted many attentions and several mechanism based on experimental results had been reported (Chander & Fuerstenau, 1974; Fuerstenau, 1990; Raju & Forsling, 1991; Crozier, 1991; Bradshaw, Cruywagen & O’Connor, 1995; Guler, Hicyilmaz, Gokagac & Emekci, 2006). However, the micro-mechanisms of the selectivity of these three thiol collectors on different sulphide mineral surfaces are not fully understood."

In conventional Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace (RK-EF) laterite nickel processing, management of dust continues to be problematic. A more efficient processing of dust represents an opportunity for energy efficiency, increased production, and productivity. PT International Nickel Indonesia (PTI), together with Vale Base Metals Technology Development (VBMTD), has successfully developed and implemented a novel flowsheet enhancement that capitalizes on these opportunities. In the novel flowsheet, the dust recycle stream is moved forward in the RK-EF laterite nickel smelting process. The dust is injected into the kiln's main burner, as opposed to being recycled to the dryers. A similar treatment of dust is commonly practiced in the cement industry; however, application to nickel smelters has not been fully developed to date. This paper describes this dust insufflation technology, the process through which it was developed for laterite nickel processing, and summarizes the lessons learned. A key conclusion is that successful new technology development requires a multi-disciplinary team involving members from research and development, study management, engineering consulting firms, project implementation management, process technology and operations.

"The presence, size, orientation, nature, and persistence of geological discontinuities dictate the behaviour of a rock mass. Block size, which is defined by discontinuity spacing, by the number of joint sets, and by the persistence of the discontinuities delineating potential blocks is an important indicator of the degree of fracturing of a rock mass. Consequently, block size is represented either explicitly or implicitly in all rock mass classification systems employed for analysis and design of surface and underground mining structures. Insitu block size distributions may provide a better means to describe the structural complexity of a rock mass. These are the distributions that would be derived if the in-situ rock mass was separated into its constitutive blocks, delineated by existing discontinuities, and each block measured. This paper presents the results of a field campaign at Louvicourt Mine aiming to characterize the rock mass using different methods for determining block size and block size distributions. IntroductionGeological structural data are used to provide input data for analysis and design methods for surface and underground structures. As the collection of structural data involves considerable investment of time and effort, it is sometimes overlooked, thus denying an important source of information for mine design. What is somewhat surprising, however, is that when structural data are available, they are not used to their full potential. Recent work has shown that data on block size have potential applications in different areas of rock engineering:• Blasting — Hudson (1993) has described the excavation process as the change of a preexisting natural block size distribution to the debris fragment size distribution (Fig. 1). Lizotte and Scoble (1994) have reviewed previous efforts on integrating site specific geological conditions into blast design. Grenon et al. (1997) provide a case study where in-situ block size distributions are compared to photogrammetric studies of blasted rock.• Rock mass classifications — Block size is used in the majority of rock mass classification systems either explicitly, as in the RMi classification system Palmstrøm (1995), or implicitly, such as in the NGI system, Barton et al. (1974)."

En plus, on traitera de l'importance dans une telle situation d'une organisation efficace dans la gestion des services et de l'opération (atelier, concasseur, entrepôt, etc.).IntroductionSidbec-Normines Inc . a entrepris l'exploitation minière du gisement de Fire Lake, le 1er janvier 1977. Le but de l'entreprise est de produire annuellement six millions (6 000 000) de tonnes de concentré d'hématite (oxide de fer) titrant 66% Fe au concentrateur de Lac-Jeannine a partir d'un minerai d'une teneur moyenne de 33% Fe, extrait de la mine de Fire Lake. Ce concentré est ensuite achemine à Port-Cartier et alimente I'usine de bouletage.Les installations minières de Sidbec-Normines sont situées a trois endroits différents : la mine à Fire Lake, le concentrateur à Lac-Jeannine et l'usine de bouletage à Port-Cartier. La mine de Fire Lake se situe à 83 km de la ville de Gagnon et à 100 km du concentrateur de Lac-Jeannine. Une route provinciale relie la ville à la mine et au concentrateur. Le minerai est acheminé de la mine au concentrateur par chemin de fer et le concentré est transporté par train sur une distance de 309 km à l'usine de bouletage de Port-Cartier."

"Abstract -Borate minerals, such as colemanite, ulexite and borax, have been reported in Tertiary continental basins of West Anatolia, Turkey, and Samos Island, Greece.Tuffaceous rocks interbedded with the borates are rich in authigenic silicate minerals such as zeolites, potassium feldspar and opal-CT, all of which have a genetic association with the borates. Chemical analyses of the tuffaceous rocks show variation in major elements due to the varying percentage of carbonaceous, detrital, and volcanic derived material.The volcanic activity in the vicinity of each particular lacustrine basin created ion-rich fluids from which a series of borates were precipitated under arid climate. Additionally, the saline-alkaline character of these fluids was responsible for the diagenesis of the silicic glass of the tuffaceous rocks, altering them to silicates and silica polymorphs."

On January 9, 2018, the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Council formed the CIM Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Committee (CIM MRMR Committee), which is a combination of the previous Standing Committee on Reserve Definitions and the Best Practices Committee. As part of its mandate, the CIM MRMR Committee updates guidelines for use by Industry, which include the Uranium Practice Guidelines. The 2024 CIM Uranium Leading Practice Guidelines were adopted by CIM Council on November 22, 2024, and supersedes the 2003 version. The main principles and guidelines relating to preparation of Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve (MRMR) estimates are provided in the CIM Estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Best Practices Guidelines (MRMR BP Guidelines, as updated from time to time). The MRMR BP Guidelines provide information pertaining to metalliferous and other deposits and many sections are readily applicable to the preparation of MRMR estimates for uranium deposits. However, additional guidance is appropriate for uranium deposits due to the radioactive nature of uranium, and its amenability, in some cases, to in situ recovery (ISR) mining methods.

As the usage of BIM increased in the construction industry, some construction owners started exploring the use of BIM for maintaining their facilities. Construction Operations Building Information Exchange (COBIE), a spreadsheet data format suggested in 2007 to manipulate building information, is considered as one of the solutions that would facilitate the process of transferring information from BIM to applications for facilities management. Several BIM and Computer Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) applications offer functions to export or import the COBIE data. To facilitate the process of generating the COBIE data out of Building Information Model, some add-in applications, such as COBIE Toolkit for Revit, also were developed. However, most of these applications handle a limited amount of COBIE data. Professionals using these add-in applications therefore sometimes end up spending a significant amount of time to add additional data manually to the COBIE data file. To automatically get a data-rich COBIE file, we developed a prototype application that extracts information from Revit, which is one of the BIM authoring tools, stores them in an external database, and then produces the COBIE file using information stored in the database. We applied our application to a pilot project and produced 8 COBIE worksheets automatically, which demonstrated a significant amount of time saving. This paper presents how our prototype application produces 8 COBIE data sets automatically. It also addresses our attempt to handle more COBIE data sets.

"Diesel-electric trucks are those that have some portion of the convention-al mechanical drive train replaced by electrical components. As larger and more powerful diesel engines appeared, the development of mechanical transmissions and related drive components failed to keep pace, and electrical generators and drive motors therefore came into use as an efficient means of transferring the mechanical energy of the engine to the driving wheels of the vehicle.The Berkeley Pit has been a major testing ground for the evolution of this type of truck. We now operate a haulage fleet consisting of conventional diesel trucks and two different types of diesel-electric trucks. There-fore, we have been able to obtain an interesting comparison of costs and performances between these three types of haulage units.In all phases of operation, the diesel-electric truck commands a favourable advantage over the conventional diesel truck, and represents a more efficient and less costly means of haulage. Nearly all manufacturers of heavy-duty trucks are now building, or have plans to build, such a truck."

The present study was carried out to have a better understanding of permeability for greater velocity ranges, An equipment was designed and built for this purpose, Pressure drop measurements were made across the thickness of open-cell nickel foams, Pore and window sizes were measured by image analysis on SEM micrographs, The experimental results are in relatively good agreement with the Hazen-Dupuit-Darcy model (R2>98%), The permeability is affected by pore size, porosity and the normalized projected area of the connecting pores (ie. windows).

Large production shafts can be successfully sunk through the ubiquitous Blairmore formation of southern Saskatchewan by employing the freezing process and by the installation of a cast iron tubbing lining. Although the freezing technique for shaft sinking and the use of cast iron tubbing to preserve the shaft are new to the North American continent, these procedures have been employed in Europe for the past eighty years. More than 200 shafts, covering a wide variety of ground conditions, have been sunk by the freezing process, and most of these have been lined with cast iron tubbing. The No. 1 shaft of International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan, comprises the first major example in Canada of the employment of European methods to overcome extremely difficult ground conditions. In the fall of 1961, Cominco dis-carded its long-established system of feeding the lead blast furnaces by narrow-gauge tram and V-cars, and installed an elevated monorail bucket system. This system automatically loads buckets of sinter, along with the correct proportion of coke, and delivers them to any of several designated furnaces. Direct labour usage has been reduced by nine men per day; improved coke proportioning has been achieved; and a major safety hazard has been eliminated. "The current American ""energy crisis"", occurring in the midst of a global debate on the adequacy of mineral supplies to support present and projected levels of world consumption, has focused attention on Canada as a major world producer of minerals. Exports of minerals account for approximately one-third of Canadian foreign earnings; more than half of these exports are to the United States. Although the United States is a net importer of most industrially important metals, with the exception of nickel and zinc, only a small part of American mineral imports are from Canada; these imports are minerals for which geographical proximity and strategic considerations are important. In the short-term, Canada is more dependent on her exports to the U.S. than America is on imports from Canada. It is argued that Canada, far from indulging in economic nationalism to preserve her resources, should expand her exports while the markets are available."

While significant progress in underground construction engineering has occurred in the past few decades, a number of fundamental deficiencies persist regarding the recognition, prediction, and mitigation of underground construction hazards associated with complex geological conditions in rock and soil works, such as tunnelling. Many of these shortcomings could be addressed by improving geomechanical models which, in turn, would provide more realistic frameworks for determining input parameters for design analysis. This would improve predictions of construction efficiency for tunnelling and the formulation of more accurate modelling techniques (2D, 3D and 4D) required to optimize the design of engineered rock structures. This research focuses primarily on the issues related to forepole temporary tunnel support within weak rock masses. This research attempts to determine how best to numerically model forepole support. The behaviour and mechanics of forepole support has not been quantified and/or optimized. As well, there is a lack of in-situ and/or laboratory forepole and weak rockmass interaction parameters available. In terms of numerical modelling, there is a lack of understanding of the use of proper interaction parameters associated with the forepole and the rockmass. The parametric study that has been conducted by the authors demonstrates the influence of each of the forepole-rockmass interaction parameters and their sensitivity. Introduction

"Load-haul-dump machines (LHDs) are typically used in underground metal mining operations. Delays or inappropriate use of LHDs can result in production loss. Optimized LHD use is especially crucial in larger mines because longer travel distances increase heat, dust, and gas emissions, which in turn increase ventilation costs. This study, conducted at an existing Swedish sublevel cave underground mine, used discrete event simulation and the AutoMod™ DES tool to determine the ventilation costs related to using too many diesel LHDs in a production area with reduced ore pass availability. When fewer ore passes are available, ventilation costs related to operating LHDs in the production area were found to increase by as much as 200, 224, and 306% for one, three, and six LHDs in operation, respectively. ¦ KEYWORDS Discrete event simulation (DES), Loading operations, Production rate, Ventilation costs RÉSUMÉ Dans les exploitations souterraines d’extraction des métaux, on utilise généralement des chargeurs-transporteurs (LHD, de l’anglais Load-haul-dump machines). Load-haul-dump machines (LHDs) are designed for such an environment. Models are available to suit specific features of the working environment such as small, large, or narrow open stopes (Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB, 2007). When carrying a full load, haulage speed is higher for LHDs than for front-end loaders with the same engine size. Also, payloads are approximately 50% higher for LHDs than for front-end loaders (Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB, 2007). LHDs are capable of climbing steep (Bloss, Harvey, Grant, & Routley, 2011). The haulage distance between stope and ore pass is usually between 50 m and 400 m. LHDs are efficient for tramming distances up to 200 m (Bloss et al., 2011), whereas when loading trucks, the LHDs work efficiently when the distance is less than 100 m (Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB, 2007). The largest diesel-powered LHDs, with drive motors of up to 350 kW, can handle a payload of 21 t (Wennmohs, 2014). Most mining equipment runs on diesel fuel, which provides flexibility, high durability, and high efficiency (Pronk, Coble, & Stewart, 2009); however, other alternatives such as electric, hybrid diesel/electric, or hydrogen fuel cell machines are increasingly being developed and used. This change is due to diesel-powered machines accounting for a significant portion of the ventilation costs in the mine (Chadwick, 2008; Paraszczak, Laflamme, & Fytas, 2013). Many industries have established their own systems for self-regulation. They often do so when companies operate in countries where financial, technical, environmental and social regulation is weak and when the industry is challenged by legitimacy issues related to behaviour in one of these areas. Mining is one industry that has progressed unevenly down the road of self-regulation in these areas. This paper examines how the development of self-regulation for mines and mining companies involves difficult questions of scope, rules, membership, assessment criteria and performance evaluation. Using a range of theoretical and empirical results from research on self-regulation, performance rating and corporate strategy, this paper analyses the strategic and operational issues related to the idea of self-regulation in the mining industry. The analysis indicates that while self-regulation may bring benefits to members, they are likely to take a long time coming; but when they do arrive they may be substantial. Using the fact that in relation to technical and financial issues the industry is quite experienced in self-regulation ? not least as it is more reluctant in areas such as environmental and social performance ? the case is made for a comprehensive and innovative approach, that draws on the areas where the industry is experienced and develops new institutional solutions in the areas where the industry is more reluctant.
