A vertical tube, 8 m long and 2.5 cm in diameter, electrically heated to 650°C throughout the majority of its height, was used to study the-effect of ore feed rate and hydrogen flow rate on the reduction of fine iron ore particles. A correlation could be obtained between the combined effect of the amount of reducing gas and reduction time and the per-cent reduction. The results suggest that a method based on the reduction of fine iron ores while falling through up-streaming hydrogen cannot be recommended for industrial application.

WHEN mining development began in the Kirkland Lake camp, twenty-five years ago, there was very little information obtainable from surface showings as to the nature of the ore deposits. A length of almost a mile of the main 'break' lay under the south arm of the lake, and elsewhere most of the outcrops were covered with glacial drift. Shafts were sunk on ore-bodies of uncertain value, either on the outcrop of the veins or-because of the lake to the north-in the south or hanging-wall. In the second year of the camp's development, the Great War broke out and retarded progress for its duration. He would have been a real optimist who, in those early years, could have foreseen mining at depths of more than a mile.

The LCL&L process (Low Caustic Leaching & Liming) is a patented hydrometallurgical route developed by Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA) to economically process spent pot lining (SPL) generated by aluminum cells. The three resulting end-products (carbonaceous, fluorinated and caustic liquor) are inert and have valorization possibilities. An industrial size pilot plant located in Saguenay (Quebec) was inaugurated in mid-2008 to demonstrate and optimize the technology. This paper describes characteristics of the LCL&L process and the experience acquired by RTA since the plant's start-up, including ramp-up capacity and technology challenges that were overcome. Possible end-products valorization methods are also presented. The carbonaceous end-product can be separated into carbon and brick rich fractions and used as either alternative fuel, reducing agents, or as raw material for third party processes. The development of a conversion process for the fluorinated end-product would allow its reuse as a substitute to fluorspar mineral for aluminum fluoride production. Finally concentrated caustic liquor is already valorized at the nearby RTA Vaudreuil alumina refinery.

Packing Experiments The porosity and most of the other physical properties of a coherent mass of any material built up by the packing together of discrete particles will obviously vary with, and be governed by, the manner of association of the particles. The relation of packing to powder metallurgy has been discussed in some detail by at least two authors. Packing Theory Theories of particle packing have been put forward by C. C. Furnas and A. E. R. Westman. Although their approach to the problem is not the same, their conclusions are similar. In the process of packing, they visualize the voids of a uniformly sized material becoming filled with particles of a smaller size, and the voids between these being filled in turn with still finer particles. Obviously, if this process is carried ad infinitum, the resultant mass will have the same density as the constituent particles. In practice, of course, such a density of packing is never attained. In addition, the premise is made that successive particle sizes must fit into the voids left by the immediately larger particles- an assumption requiring definite size gradations and also particle shapes. It remained, then, for theory to correlate relative diameter ratios, and proportions and numbers of sizes of particles, for requisite packed densities. Briefly, the following principles were postulated: (a) For an infinite diameter ratio between largest and smallest sizes, an infinite number of particle sizes in proper proportion is required to give natural density. (b) For a given diameter ratio, there is a maximum number of permissible particle sizes for maximum packed density (Furnas). (c) Provided the particle shape is spherical, or approximately so, the proportions o particle sizes can be calculated. (d) The ratios of successive diameters of particles are in geometric progression.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an increasingly popular method for generating and managing facility information during the life cycle of a building, ranging from facility conceptualization, through design, construction and its operational life. Organizations involved in Facility Management (FM) have the opportunity to use BIM as a knowledge repository to document evolving facility information and to support decisions made by the facility managers during the operational life of a facility. This paper demonstrates the potential of using BIM to develop algorithms that automate decision making for FM applications. The potential of utilizing BIM as an analysis tool is demonstrated through the scenario of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system failure in an operating facility. In case of a typical HVAC malfunction today, facility occupants record complaints in a ticketing database maintained by the FM organization. Upon receiving notification of HVAC system failure, facility inspectors visit the location to confirm the reported failure. Upon confirmation, facility managers review building plans and specifications to develop a detailed plan of action to repair any HVAC components suspected of damage. Based on the plan of action, inspectors visit the facility to inspect and, in case of damage, repair the appropriate HVAC system components. These FM practices ? as currently implemented across the industry ? are labor intensive, time consuming, and often rely on unreliable and outdated information. To address these shortcomings, the authors propose an alternative methodology of HVAC fault detection in operational buildings. The authors implement an algorithm that leverages complaint ticket data and automates BIM to determine potentially damaged HVAC system components. Based on the list of HVAC components suspected of damage, the algorithm develops a plan of action for the facility inspectors. Finally, the authors discuss the advantages of the proposed method as well as the challenges of implementing automated BIM-enabled decision making processes in the FM industry.

The additives polyacrylamide, 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, Tetra-butylammonium bromide, Benzalkonium chloride and chitin are evaluated during zinc electrolysis from synthetic acidic sulphate electrolyte containing Mn2+ ions, in absence and in presence of 0.0055 mg dm-3 of Sb3+ ions. Galvanostatic polarization tests for 2 hours at 50 mA cm-2 and 38oC were carried out to determine the cathodic and anodic potentials, and current efficiency of the deposited zinc. Potentiodynamic polarization and cyclic voltammetry tests have also been employed to study the electrochemical behavior of each additive on the zinc deposit on aluminum electrode. Results showed that, in presence of Sb3+, adding 1 to 3 mg of 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride increases the cell voltage by ˜0-7 mV. Current efficiency is increased by ˜4.90-6.40%; power consumption is reduced by ˜147-173 kWh t-1 by adding 1-3 mg, respectively. However, in absence of Sb3+, cell voltage is decreased by ˜7-28 mV, current efficiency is increased by ˜0.70-1.50%; power consumption is reduced by ˜41-47 kWh t-1 by adding 1-3 mg. The effect of the other additives on cell voltage, current efficiency, lead content and morphology of zinc deposit has also been examined. Surface morphology and crystallographic orientation of the deposit was studied using scanning electron microscopic (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The content of lead in the deposit has also been measured using inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy (ICP).

L?arrivée de nouvelles technologies sur le marché des foreuses portables combinée au besoin des mines à mieux consommer l?énergie électrique ont permis d?identifier le potentiel de deux nouveaux type de foreuses présentement utilisées en Afrique du Sud, à savoir les foreuses électriques et les foreuses hydrauliques actionnées à l?eau. Grâce à la collaboration de mines Niobec et Géant Dormant de Cambior Inc., ainsi que d?Hydro-Québec, le potentiel réel d?économie énergétique des foreuses portables hydrauliques et électriques par rapport aux foreuses conventionnelles à air comprimé a été évalué pour des roches dures et moles. Ainsi, cet article a pour objectif d faire ressortir ces potentiels d?économie énergétiques. En outre, les résultats pour une mine mécanisée et une autre mine de type filonien, dans lesquelles on retrouve des conditions de terrain différentes, seront présentés. Les résultats montrent un potentiel d?économie énergétique d?environ 70% pour la foreuse électrique et d?environ 50% pour la foreuse actionnée à l?eau. Ces résultats montrent qu?il est possible d?obtenir une meilleure efficacité énergétique par mètre foré. Ainsi, il apparaît maintenant intéressant de poursuivre les travaux de développement des deux technologies pour les applications de forage vertical et de tensionnement des boulons, et de viser à accroitre le taux de pénétration de la foreuse électrique pour le rendre équivalent à celui de la foreuse à air comprimé.

"During the summer of1989, Les Mines Selbaie, with the cooperation of Université Laval initiated a research project to evaluate the column flotation technology for its concentrator near Joutel, Quebec. The experimental work involved both a 5 cm by 11 m laboratory column and a 45 cm by 10 m home-made pilot unit Amenability tests were conducted using both units on various streams of the plant. Results showed that columns are not suitable for the copper cleaning circuit because the loss of precious metals, associated with the rejected pyrite, overcome the improved copper metallurgy. On the other hand, column testing at the zinc circuit showed improved zinc selectivity.Scale-up testing was', therefore, conducted on the first zinc cleaner concentrate using the laboratory-size column. The influence of variables such as porous parger grain size, wash water flow rate, airflow rate and froth depth values on column performance was' first assessed. Scale-up parameters were then determined using the optimal operating conditions from the previous tests. Simulation facilitated the determination of the most convenient plant-scale column arrangement.A number of conclusions concerning the experimental determination of scale-up parameters are also presented."

"A hybrid methodology is proposed to improve the accuracy of Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) concentrations simulated in a ventilation network model by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). DPM, as a primary concern for underground hard-rock mines, has been studied in two dominant numerical models, ventilation network solvers and computational fluid dynamics. Ventilation network solvers are efficient, but they are not able to provide three-dimensional DPM concentration contours and only accept area-average DPM data as input. CFD simulations are time-consuming, but generating DPM concentration results with high accuracy. Besides, both monitoring points and planes can be created in a CFD model, which can take both point data and area-average DPM data as input. The hybrid methodology is intended to combine the advantages of the two by using the CFD results to update the network model results at key locations. A field study was conducted in a dead-end heading in an underground gold mine in the United States. Real-time DPM monitors were used to collect data. A CFD model and a network model were built for the experiment area. The CFD model was calibrated to the experimental data. In the study presented here, results from a calibrated CFD model are converted to equivalent diesel emission rates in the ventilation network model at a shared outlet. The hybrid methodology is used to provide better input for the network model. INTRODUCTION Mine ventilation system is one of the most important parts for an underground mine. It not only provides fresh air to the personnel but also helps clear the contaminants generated from the diesel-powered equipment. For most underground metal and non-metal mines, diesel particulate matter is the main contaminant. It is also the focus of this paper."

"A method and device are described for sampling diamond-drill core by cutting a continuous fillet of constant cross section from the cylindrical surface of the core throughout appropriate sample lengths. The apparatus employs a tapered, abrasive-set, cutting wheel, the conical cutting surface of which projects slightly into a rectangular core-guiding trough set parallel to the axis of rotation. The depth of fillet and thus the amount of sample per unit length can be regulated by adjusting the core guides. The freshly cut fillet itself, by engaging in a guide beyond the cutting wheel, acts to prevent rotation of the core during operation of the device.The cuttings which form the sample are normally collected in a tray below the cutting-wheel and appear at about 80 per cent -100 mesh. They require little or no further treatment or comminution before analysis. "Shales are highly anisotropic in their mechanical behavior. The strength ( ??1) of anisotropic shales depends not only on the magnitude of the other two principal stresses ( ??2, ??3), but also on the bedding plane orientations (?) relative to the principal stresses. In this study, the role of the intermediate stress ( ??2) on the strength of shale is evaluated using new data from triaxial compression and extension tests. To understand the failure behavior of shales, we have carried out triaxial compression tests ( ??1 > ??2 = ??3) on two organic rich mudstones, at different confining stresses and loading angles. We first fit the triaxial compression data with Jaeger’s plane-of-weakness model, and find that the model is able to represent the strength behavior of anisotropic shales reasonably well. We then carried out five triaxial extension tests ( ??1 = ??2 > ??3) for a high strength-anisotropy shale, and two extension tests for a low strength-anisotropy shale. Results from the compression and extension tests for failure along the weak plane shows that the role of ??2 is not significant for weak plane failure. However, for the low strength-anisotropy shale, the failure strength of the intact rock (i.e., at ??= 0o and 90o) for compression and extension tests were significantly different. This indicates that for intact rock failure, the role of ??2 is important and cannot be ignored.INTRODUCTIONFor many years, various researchers have studied the roles of ??2 for failure of isotropic rocks. (Mogi, 1967 and 2007; Colmenares and Zoback, 2002; Al-Ajmi and Zimmerman, 2005 and 2006; Haimson, 2009; Ma and Haimson, 2012). The findings from these studies show that the effect of ??2 on the strength of isotropic rocks is generally significant, and cannot be ignored.Since the role of ??2 in the failure of isotropic rocks was recognized, other researchers attempted to extend some of these isotropic failure criteria to anisotropic rocks, but with limited success (e.g., Tiwari & Rao, 2007; Singh et al., 1998; Zhang and Zhu, 2007; Pei, 2008). Smith and Cheatham (1980), on the other hand, conducted true-triaxial experiments on the Green River Shale and used a J2-I1 type relationship to predict the strength behavior, but without considering the effect of the three-dimensional orientation of the weak plane on strength. Therefore, unlike for the case of isotropic rocks, additional studies need to be done to determine the role of 2 on the failure of anisotropic rocks."

"In July 2017, Deilmann-Haniel signed a contract with IOO Slavkaliy to sink two 750 metre (m) deep freeze shafts for the Nezhinsky Potash mine in Belarus. This is the second shaft project where this technology is employed after two over 1,000 m deep shafts for a potash project in Saskatchewan, Canada, have been sunk by the application of the Herrenknecht Shaft Boring Roadheader (SBR) technology. Developed to sink shafts for green field projects in soft to medium hard rock, in frozen or unfrozen geology, the machine technology utilizes a roadheader-type cutterhead on a telescopic boom to mechanically excavate the rock, and a pneumatic mucking system to convey the muck from the face into the buckets. This leads to a manless face during the sinking cycle and thus a significant improvement in terms of workplace safety. For the Nezhinsky project, the SBR design was significantly modified in close cooperation between Deilmann-Haniel and Herrenknecht, based on the available experience and the special requirements of the project. Such modifications have been for example the adaptation of the Pneumatic Mucking System to cope with wet material as well as dry as originally planned or the shaft lining moving from shotcrete application to jump for and tubbing installation for which a step-change hands-off tubbing erector for the placement of segments was designed. Further modifications to optimize the machine technology for the requirements during shaft sinking were applied on the two machines for the Slavkaliy project as well as several revisions to match the special project requirements. The SBR is suitable for soft and medium hard rock up to 100 MPa UCS. The main design limits are maximum weight of the machine with 400 tonnes and length or height of 50 m due to the depth of the pre-sink. The Pneumatic Mucking System was changed in all components, sheaves and rope arrangement were redesigned and the concept of the hoist system was also re-engineered. The SBR in Belarus is configured for a daily sinking rate of three metres and all systems behind the cutting boom are not the bottle neck of the whole system. The works on site started in November 2017 including freeze hole drilling, construction works, site setup, installation of hoists winches, permanent headgears and other components required for sinking. The SBRs arrived on site in June/July 2018 and were preassembled on surface and then lowered into the 50 m pre-sink. SBR #1 started full face sinking in mid-December 2018, and SBR #2 in late January 2019. By the end of February 2019, the machines were at 150 m and 100 m depth respectively, and achieved up to 3.6 m/day concrete lined shaft. The SBR and the sinking system, the experiences, problems, technical solutions and performances of this challenging project will be presented in this paper."

"ForewordPart I of this paper, published in the March 1992 issue of the CIM Bulletin, surveyed the probable consequences of a limitation on the emissions of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere for the steel industry. What might be termed the conventional responses to this restriction open to the industry were also surveyed in that section. This section, Part II of the paper, explores a new option - the possibility for the joint production of iron and liquid fuels useful for transportation purposes. In this case, it is shown that it is important to minimize the production of carbon dioxide during the reduction stage to maximize the proportion of the reductant carbon embodied in the fuel. It is also advantageous to conserve hydrogen in the reduction step. In essence, the same carbon fulfills two purposes: it serves as a reductant and fuel for ironmaking and then as a constituent of a liquid fuel. If recovered plastics could be used in ironmaking, the same carbon could serve three useful purposes in turn. The conditions and limitations for the joint use of carbon in such 'cascading' processes are explored below. ABSTRACTIt is becoming increasingly probable that emissions of carbon dioxide from the fossil fuels will have to be reduced to deal with the threat of global warming. This issue is likely to be resolved one way or the other in the period 1995 to 2000 which does not leave much time to develop responsive options. In the intervening period, the policy of the Government of Canada is to stabilize emissions of greenhouse gases at their 1990 level by 2000, by encouraging greater efficiency in the use of energy. Should further reductions prove necessary, economic instruments would probably be employed but these would not be applied before a comprehensive international agreement is reached.There are three main themes in this paper: it is assumed that measures to control carbon dioxide emissions will in fact be necessary by the turn of the century; that there will be a rising need for liquid fuels to supply the world's steadily growing fleet of motor vehicles for many years to come, and that the future niche for Canada's industry in such a carbon-constrained world will be the operation of the energy-intensive industries with efficiency and environmental sensitivity.The steel industry, as a large user of both coal and energy in other forms, would be significantly affected by a need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. This paper first examines what might be called the conventional responses open to the industry in such a situation and then explores a new possibility for making better use of carbon by the co-production of iron and liquid fuels."

A general outline is given for the determination of copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, lead, cadmium, bismuth, manganese, uranium, molybdenum, vanadium, sulphate and fluoride by polarographic or amperometric methods in a variety of ores or metallurgical products. The detection of oxygen in gas mixtures by an amperometric method used as a safety device is also discussed. Introduction I N this paper, a general outline will be given of the polarographic and amperometric methods used for the chemical analysis of various ores and metallurgical products in the Chemical Analysis Section of the Extraction Metallurgy Division of the Mines Branch. The methods to be discussed will be confined to those based on the use of normal D.C. polarography and will not include those methods which utilize a cathode-ray, square wave, pulse or A.C. type of polarograph. For the sake of convenience, ? the polarographic methods will be discussed according to the type of supporting electrolyte employed, as the same electrolyte may serve to determine more than one element in more than one type of ore. It is important to define "adequacy," and the most useful definition is a continuing availability of mineral materials under cost and other conditions which imply no significant burden on the achievement of otherwise attainable levels of consumption and well-being. For current decision making, it is sufficient to consider adequacy just to the end of the century, with some regard being given to then remaining mineral inventory. A comparison of cumulative demand projections to the year 2000 with already identified reserves ( economically recoverable amounts in known deposits) suggests little reason for concern with world adequacy of iron ore, aluminum, manganese, chromium or potash. Conservative estimates of "prospective" reserves (amounts producible at today's prices, but yet to be discovered) suggests that there are ample quantities of virtually all other mineral resources as well. A probable exception is oil and gas, of which there may be scant amounts remaining after the turn of the century. However, there is an evident sufficiency of substitute forms of energy, though it is difficult to see just where developing technology will take us. The critical questions have to do with the increasing dependence of the industrialized countries on external sources of supply , coupled with a new international politic s which complicates the problem of insuring timely development of, and access to, remaining deposits. In this context, Canada, a still mineral-rich nation, is in one of the more favorable positions.

Galvanic corrosion is a potentially major concern associated with the application of stainless steel reinforcement which is in direct (electrical) contact with carbon steel reinforcement in concrete structures. Judicious use of stainless steel rebar in both new construction and rehabilitation of older structures is a viable, cost-effective option for extending service life and reducing maintenance costs. Questions, however, had arisen about the possibility of increased corrosion due to galvanic effects. This paper investigates the galvanic-coupling behaviours of three different types of stainless steel and carbon steel. Tests were performed both in electrochemical cells and with specimens in concrete inside an environmental chamber. The results show that oxygen reduction on stainless steel is the rate-determining factor for galvanic coupling of these two metals. It is much lower than that of passive carbon steel. As a result, the galvanic coupling of stainless steel with carbon steel will not increase the risk of corrosion of carbon steel reinforcement.

In this paper we present the results of preliminary investigations into the applicability of new laboratory scale tests for the prediction of operating gap and specific throughput in high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). The work is a part of the CAMIRO HPGR research program being conducted at the University of British Columbia, which aims to develop a suite of small-scale tests and procedures for the selection and sizing of HPGRs. A focus of the presented study is to test sample types in terms of their terra-mechanics based characteristics and relate them to specific throughput and gap results from pilot HPGR testing on the same samples.

THE PRESIDENT (DR. C. B. KINGSTON, member C.l.M.M.) expressed regret that neither of the authors of the paper was able to be present to submit the paper in person. In their absence, it would be introduced formally from the Chair. It was a clear, straightforward account of a fine piece of shaft sinking, cleverly conceived and boldly executed. He referred briefly to the distribution and nature of the Dome ore-bodies and stated that, for both the miner and the metallurgist, the mine had provided a wide range of problems of unusual interest. Discussion on the paper was then invited. MR. THOMAS PRYOR said the paper was most opportune, because the subject of internal shafts did not appear to be fully treated in current mining literature. Many members were not familiar with Canadian gold deposits and it would be of interest if the authors could give a brief description of the location of the ere deposits of the Dome mine. This information would doubtless explain why a new internal shaft was needed in a position which required such an exceptionally long cross-cut to connect it to the main hoisting shaft to surface. It would also add to the value of the paper if the authors would give some idea of the duty expected of the new shaft in terms of tons of rock hoisted and of trips engaged in the transport of men and materials, and it would be helpful if figures could be given of the total capital cost of the hoists and subsidiary excavations at the shaft top, and of the cost per foot for sinking and lining the shaft below the collar. Turning to details of the paper, one was favourably impressed by the care given to the provision of a good travelling way for men in the main cross-cut, as shown in Figure 1. It was by no means always that one could walk in comfort and safety in a working where there was a 20-in. ventilating pipe in the roof.

"Underground structures are an integral part of the infrastructure of modern society and are used for a wide range of applications, including subways and railways, highways, not at least nuclear facilities. When the wider area is subject to earthquake activity, underground constructions should be analyzed on seismic and static loading. Observations showed that the underground structures have significantly less seismic risk than surface structures. Available methods allowed analyzing the magnitude of risk for different input parameters of seismic loads in different ground environment. Simulation of earthquake loading on underground structures, in the present paper is given the various aspects of analyzing the potential damage and instability of underground facilities. INTRODUCTIONThe development of methods and computing resources used for para-seismic engineering has finetuned the evaluation of the seismic strength of buildings and equipment. Reinforcements may therefore be decided, not simply on the basis of a reassessment of the hazard, which constitutes input data for the calculation of structures and equipment, but also on the basis of developments in para-seismic engineering. Underground facilities are an integral part of the infrastructure of modern society and are used for a wide range of applications, including subways and railways, highways, material storage, and sewage and water transport and not at least nuclear facilities. Although in the past showed that the underground structures are significantly less seismic risk than on the surface, the professional researches and their results are accessible. Seismic resistance of underground structures is analyzed from several aspects. The currently available methods allowed analyzing the magnitude of risk for different input parameters of seismic loads in different ground environment. For better interpretation of earthquake loading on underground structures, are given below the various aspects of analyzing the potential damage and instability of underground facilities in rock. They grouped damages due to earthquakes in underground structures into three main categories:- damage from ground shaking- damage from fault dislocation- damage by earthquake-induced ground failures (e.g. liquefaction and landslides)."
