This paper offers a brief review of current literature pertaining to vacuum degassing or vacuum casting of steel as practiced in the U.S.A., Germany and the U.S.S.R. The advantages of vacuum degassing of large forging ingots, heavy section casting, for the conversion of rimming bessemer steels to killed steel and for the production of transformer steels are discussed. Operating pressures, reduction in gas contents and improvements in hydrogen segregation, steel cleanliness and mechanical properties, obtained with the various techniques, are described. The paper includes a description of an experimental vacuum stream-droplet degassing unit and some preliminary results obtained at the Physical Metallurgy Division Research Laboratories Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa on laboratory steel melts. "IntroductionThe coal deposits, all of lignite rank, of economic interest in Saskatchewan are associated with the Ravenscrag Formation (Paleocene). Several Cretaceous formations have less significant lignite accumulations (Broughton, Irvine and W'hitaker, 1974). The Swan River Group (lower Cretaceous) and Judith River Formation (upper Cretaceous) have the only coalbearing strata in the shallow subsurface of central Saskatchewan. The Swan River Group coalfield is relatively small and underlies only 15 sq km of the surface approximately 40 km south of La Ronge, Saskatchewan. An estimated 36 billion short tons are within 45 m of the surface. No reserve estimates are known to have been calculated for the coal-bearing Judith River Formation exposed at the surface in the vicinity of the South Saskatchewan River valley in west-central Saskatchewan. Although no coalfields have been delineated, lignite beds up to 1.8 m thick have been intersected in test holes. The coal-bearing upper Cretaceous and lower Tertiary strata of the northern Williston Basin extends the full width of southern Saskatchewan for 650 km, and from the United States border 120 km north to 50° latitude (Fig. 1). Only the coalfields of the Ravenscrag Formation, because of their economic interest, will be considered further. There are four major coalfields. They are, from east to west: Estevan, Willow Bunch, Wood Mountain and Shaunavon (Cypress) coalfields. Cumulative lignite seam thickness for each basin is 10 -15 m (Figs. 2 and 3). The origin of each coal basin, resource calculations, seam stratigraphy, and mining activity are discussed. Regional Setting The Williston Basin is an ellipsoidal depression in the Precambrian basement, centered in western North Dakota and marginal to the exposed craton of northern Saskatchewan and central Manitoba (Fig. 1). The sediments of the basin range from Cambrian to Pleistocene in age and have a maximum known thickness of 4614 min western North Dakota. A maximum of 3200 m is recorded in southern Saskatchewan. Most structural deformation is late Cretaceous to early Tertiary (Paleocene) in age, coinciding with the Laramide Orogeny. The pre-Laramide Williston Basin, with a depocenter near Williston, North Dakota, began developing during the middle Ordovician, or possibly earlier."

THE gold deposits of the Pioneer and Bralorne mines, in the Bridge River district of British Columbia, are closely associated with a long, narrow intrusive body of extremely variable composition, outcropping on the northeast side of Cadwallader creek and lying almost entirely within the property boundaries of the two companies. Other masses of the same type of intrusive rock are found in the district, more or less along the line of the main axis of the Pioneer-Bralorne in trusive, and have associated with them variable amounts of gold-quartz mineralization (Figure 1). The ore deposits of the district have been the subject of investigation by officers of the Geological Survey of Canada at various times during the past 25 years, and articles on the geology and mines of the district have been published by various individuals in technical journals. A DIGHEM survey was flown in the Belford-Montcalm Township area of Ontario in November 1975. This 600-linemile survey resulted in the detection of 134 EM anomalies. The Montcalm Township copper-nickel discovery yielded a single-line anomaly having a conductance of 154 mhos. This anomaly was highly visible because (a) it had the highest conductance in the survey area, (b) it correlated with a 175-gamma thumbprint-shaped magnetic anomaly and (c) it was isolated from long conductive bands. The deposit is a copper-nickel pyrrhotite body which occurs in gabbro and strikes north-south, parallel to the flight lines. The DIGHEM survey was flown north-south, because the exploration program was primarily concerned with locating copper-zinc sulphides in the east-west-striking felsic volcanics. The flight line passed close to the deposit and yielded a 9-ppm anomaly on the chart record. The computer analysis showed that a deposit of exceptionally high conductance (154 mhos) caused the relatively weak (9 ppm) anomaly. The ground follow-up program of magnetics and EM led quickly to the discovery drill hole, which penetrated the orebody in September 1976. Subsequent geophysical surveys consisted of horizontal-loop EM, pulse EM, magnetic and induced polarization surveys over an area of about 8 claims. In addition, a detailed DIGHEM" airborne survey was flown at a line spacing of 100 m to evaluate the entire property of 620 claims. This detailed survey yielded EM conductor maps and contour maps of resistivity, magnetics and enhanced magnetics.

Modern furnace designs often incorporate extensive use of cooled elements to achieve long campaign lives at high operating intensities. However, contact between water and high temperature fluids can result in powerful Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosions (BLEVEs). Therefore cooling such elements with water carries inherent risks when used under slag and particularly below molten metal or matte. Alternative cooling media exist that can reduce or eliminate the risk of BLEVEs. These media are analysed and discussed in the context of deeply cooled furnace elements. Important factors in selecting alternative coolants are explored including: critical heat flux, thermal limits, toxicity, flammability, unit cost, etc. Key cooling system design criteria are reviewed in the context of both traditional and alternative coolants. Results of Computational Fluid Dynamics are presented for an example tap-block cooler design using a number of selected coolants. Research needs to advance the safe use of alternative coolants are presented.

The Altair process digests ilmenite concentrate in high-chloride HC1 solution, with complete dissolution of titanium and iron. The Fe(III) ions are reduced to the ferrous form, and the solution is cooled to produce crystalline ferrous chloride. Titanium is transferred by solvent extraction into a purified, concentrated Ti stream, which is spray-hydrolyzed to produce TiO2 hydrate. The hydrate is further calcined with additives to generate a high-quality pigment. All the chloride streams are recycled. In the original flowsheet, the iron chloride is pyrohydrolyzed by spray roasting to regenerate 18% HCl, which is subsequently converted to HC1 gas and water by pressure-swing distillation. A modified flowsheet includes an alternative to iron chloride spray roasting, producing more concentrated HCl and decreasing the amount of solution to be distilled. Improvements in digestion, solvent extraction and final pigment production are also introduced. A 100 t/y pilot plant is being built and will test the new concepts and confirm the overall water, acid and impurity balances of the process.

"A central composite experimental design was used to determine empirical relationships between the operating variables of a ball mill and the characteristics of the ground products. The independent variables selected for the study were the work index and size distribution of the feed material, the feed rate and the pulp density. The measured responses included product size distribution, product surface area, viscosity of pulp discharge, weight of dry solids in mill, mill time constant and emitted sonic vibrations. The ball mill was operated continuously in open circuit during each experimental run.Multivariable regression techniques were used to derive linear empirical models from the experimental results. Of the four factors studied, the grindability of the feed material significantly affected every measured response. The size distribution of the ground product was affected significantly by the feed rate and the size distribution of the feed, but not by the pulp• density. Feed throughput capacity and pulp density were significant to the viscosity of the pulp discharge, the weight of solids in the mill and the mill time constant. Significant first-and second-order models are given for the above relationships. The relation-ships between the characteristics of the sonic vibrations of the operating mill and the various dependent variables have not as yet been established."

The accumulation of damage due to localized corrosion [pitting, stress corrosion cracking (SCC), corrosion fatigue (CF), crevice corrosion (CC), and erosion-corrosion (EC)] in complex industrial systems, such as power plants, refineries, desalination systems, etc., poses a threat to continued safe and economic operation, primarily because of the sudden, catastrophic nature of the resulting failures. Of particular interest in managing these forms of damage is the development of robust algorithms that can be used to predict the integrated damage as a function of time and as a function of the operating conditions of the system. Because complex systems of the same design rapidly become unique, due to differences in operating histories, and because failures are rare events, there is generally insufficient data on any given system to derive reliable empirical models that capture the impact of all (or even some) of the important independent variables. Accordingly, empirical models have generally failed to provide a robust basis for predicting the accumulation of corrosion damage in complex systems under realistic operating conditions. The alternative prediction philosophy is determinism, in which the development of damage is described in terms of valid, physico-electrochemical mechanisms with the output being constrained by the natural laws. The differential damage is then integrated along the corrosion evolutionary path for the system (i.e., over the future operating "history") to yield the desired integrated damage, which is the quantity that is most useful to an operator. In this paper, we review the theory of predicting corrosion damage within the framework of Damage Function Analysis (DFA), with particular emphasis on the pitting of aluminum in chloride solutions and on the accumulation of damage from SCC in Type 304 SS components in the primary coolant circuits of Boiling Water (Nuclear) Reactors (BWRs). These cases have been selected to illustrate the various phases through which localized corrosion damage occurs.

"Under certain conditions useful gravity information of a reconnaissance nature can be obtained with-out measuring elevations by spirit level surveys on the ground. Gravity surveys can become part of a practical exploration program where high cost and slow progress previously hindered their utility. The advantages of the new elevation procedures are realized mainly in remote areas, in areas where ground transportation is slow and difficult and on surveys where the station spacing is large in comparison with the distance of the average optimum level shot. To utilize the advantages, transportation by helicopter or light plane is usually necessary. Methods of obtaining elevation control without leveling include: barometric altimeter survey; photogram-metric -APR spot determinations; methods involving the measurement of gravity gradients. The accuracies of these methods have been tested and compared with the normal accuracy of level surveys. It is felt that each method has its place in reconnaissance gravity work, particularly in the open areas of Northern Canada."

"The Canam property is in southern British Columbia, 24 miles southeast of Hope. It is reached by 5 miles of road from Mile 26 on the Hope-Princeton Highway.Between the years 1930, when the property was discovered, and I 938 development work by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited included some open-cuts and six adits totalling 2,700 feet in length. Canam Copper Company Ltd. explored the property intermittently from 1947 to 1955 by diamond drilling and underground work, including driving No. 10 adit. From surface down to the level of No. 10 adit, about 1,250,000 tons of ore has been outlined with an approximate grade of 1.25 per cent copper, 0.8 ounce silver per ton, and 0.01 ounce gold per ton. The ore in the upper part of the deposit also contains a little molybdenum and a little uranium.In June, 1955 Canam Copper Company Ltd. made arrangements to have the property brought into production under the direction of Mogul Mining Corporation Ltd. of Toronto, and a new low level adit has been started.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe principal rocks on the Canam property are chert, cherty argillite, and argillite. They are considered to be Jurassic or Lower Cretaceous in age. Although massive bands to 150 feet in thickness occur, these rocks are in general thinly bedded. Conformable bands of pyrrhotite, a fraction of an inch in thickness, are not uncommon in the well-bedded rocks, and fine tourmaline can be observed in various places.The sediments strike slightly west of north and dip quite steeply, generally eastward; however, sharp divergences from this general attitude are fairly common.Dark grey dioritic sills, in which slender prismatic crystals are conspicuous, are fairly common in the sediments. In general the sills are less than 25 feet in thickness, but a few are as much as 100 feet thick. Under the microscope the sills are seen to consist largely of amphibole (pargasite) and plagioclase (near An50)."

Coal dust explosions still remain the main hazard in the coal mining sector, notwithstanding their relatively wide recognition compared to other hazards and the development of effective methods of prevention. Coal dust explosions are still the cause of numerous catastrophes, often leading to fatalities. Fortunately, they rarely occur, and it is for this reason that their hazardous impact is often underestimated. This problem in Poland is being exclusively solved by the Central Mining Institute, Experimental Mine Barbara. Here, basic research on the phenomenon of coal dust explosions and prevention methods is carried out, as well as investigations into the causes and circumstances of past accidents. After 15 years of no coal dust explosion accidents in Poland (1987?2002), a few coal dust explosions have recently occurred, with tragic consequences. These events have taken place not only in hard coal mines, where the presence of dangerous coal dust is the result of common production cycle, and safety measures against coal dust explosions are subject to specific regulations, but also in coal-fired power plants. This is of special concern because prior to 1987, such accidents had been been reported only for coal mines and not for coal-fired power plants. In recent years, two dust explosions occurred in Polish power facilities: the Dolna Odra and Turow power plants. In both cases, coal dust explosions occurred in the fuel supply system, but biomass dust was also involved. The explosions caused significant damage to the systems and buildings. This paper gives description and schematics of the regions of catastrophic coal dust explosions that have occurred in recent years in Poland, as well as the results of post-accident investigations, presenting the coal dust explosion hazard at the accident scene The results specify in detail the state of safety measures against coal dust explosions in light of the relevant regulations in force, including amount of deposited coal dust, content of incombustible matter in coal dust, free moisture content in coal dust, state of coal dust explosion safety zones, and state of explosion barriers. The conclusions from the site inspection and post-accident investigations presented enable us to determine locations of explosion initiation, probable ignition sources, range of explosion flames, and explosion barrier performance. A complete elimination of coal dust explosion hazard at the site of dust deposition is practically impossible to achieve. Similarly, a total elimination of ignition source, which may be related to the occurrence of other natural hazards, equipment malfunction or human errors, is impossible. The examples of tragic events that took place in Polish coal mines and coal-fired power plants highlight shortcomings and mistakes made in terms of assessment and prevention measures taken against the coal dust explosion hazard.

One of the requirements for the successful waging of war is an unlimited supply of iron ore. In the spring of 1941 the demand for iron ore was expected to exceed the supply. This was particularly so in the case of high-grade lump iron ore, essential to the open-hearth process of making steel. The bulk of Canada's iron ore was imported from the United States. At this time, Canada was making every effort to conserve United States funds for more vital purchases. For these reasons, the development of Canadian iron ore resources became of prime importance. Several companies undertook investigations and one of these examined the old Josephine deposit. Location The Josephine property is in the district of Algoma, in the Michipicoten area of the Sault Ste. Marie mining division of Ontario. It is 120 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie and 20 rail-miles east of Michipicoten harbour, on lake Superior (see Figure 1). Transportation in the area is furnished by the Algoma Central and Hudson Bay railway. The Michipicoten branch of this line passes within a mile of the Josephine mine. Michipicoten harbour provides a port through which iron ore is currently shipped. Power in the area is supplied by the Great Lakes Power Company, with generating plants on Michipicoten river, on Montreal river, and on St. Mary's river at Sault Ste. Marie. A series of transmission lines cover the district and one of these is connected to the Josephine mine by a 3 ½-mile branch line. History The Josephine property was staked by Alois Goetz in 1899. Before the claims could be recorded, the township in which they are located was given to the Algoma Central & Hudson Bay railway as part of a land grant. As a result, the ownership remained in dispute until August 24th, 1906, when a settlement was arbitrated by the Honourable Frank Cochrane. His ruling is interesting and is quoted in part.

"This paper discusses the experience of Noranda Mines Limited, Matagami Division, with the vertical crater retreat (VCR) method in the mining of narrow-vein stopes. Although limited to only one stope, the viability of this method at the Radiore No.2 Mine has proven that further use of VCR in narrow-vein mining will be made.IntroductionThe Radiore No.2 property is located east of the Bell River in the southeast quadrant of Isle-Dieu Township, approximately 4.5 km east of the town of Matagami. The new James Bay Highway is 2.5 km north of the property and access to the mine is by a 2.5-km logging road.The property was staked by Radiore Uranium Mines in March 1961 and the sulphide body was first indicated by an E.M. survey. Diamond drilling commenced in the fall of 1961 and was completed by the end of 1962. As per an agreement in 1970, the claims were sold and assigned to Orchan Mines Limited. Subsequently, the property was transferred to Bell Allard Mines Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Orchan Mines. Early in 1979, Noranda Mines Limited acquired the property and it is now part of Noranda's Matagami Division.Geology and MineralizationThe deposit is in a band of volcanic rocks north of the Bell River complex. The lens of massive sulphides dips almost vertically and strikes almost east-west. The north contact is essentially sharp against andesite material; the south contact is less well defined, as the massive sulphides tend to grade into more disseminated material.The orebody varies from 5 to 20 feet in width, by 350 feet long and 200 feet in height. The overburden is composed of sand, gravel and clay, varying from 0 to 26 feet in depth. The ore reserves were 153,340 tons grading 1.97% copper and 1.01% zinc including 10% of dilution at zero grade."

INTRODUCTION Preparation of this article, at the request of the Committee on papers, has been undertaken in the hope that it may stir up helpful discussion and constructive criticism. The Canadian mining industry is in the dumps and there is no use trying to deny the fact; nor does it help to say that other industries are in as bad or a worse condition. Let us face the situation honestly and see just how serious it is. The entire financial and industrial world is in a state of depression. The gravity of the case is no doubt exaggerated by contrast with the wave of optimism and false prosperity which pre-ceded it. The prevailing gloom and pessimism are just as irrational as was the former super-optimism. As far as we mining engineers are concerned, the causes are quite beyond our control, and it is the effect upon our own industry which interests us most. This effect is an accumulation of mineral products with consequent depression in price to a point where profits have almost, if not quite, disappeared. Whether this accumulation of stocks is the result of over-production or under-consumption is difficult to say, but it would seem likely that there is a combination of the two. The introduction of selective flotation has brought about a large increase in the production of zinc, a moderate increase in the production of lead, and a comparatively small increase in copper. It has turned relatively small mines into great producers, as in the case of the Sullivan, revived expiring mines like La Cananea, and brought-in new ones like Flin Flon

The corrosion properties of the skin and the bulk of semi-solid processed and high pressure die cast AZ91 alloy were studied in 5% NaCI solution by (a) analysing the corrosion morphology, (b) measuring electrochemical polarization curves, (c) performing electrochemical impedance spectroscopic measurements, and (d) immersion tests at constant pH-values. Using XRD, LM, SEM and EDX to evaluate the microstructure of skin and bulk specimens, the corrosion results were related to the microstructures of the particular alloys. However, microstructure and corrosion performance were found to be similar for both production processes, and only slight but distinct differences were found. Generally, the skin corrosion properties are inferior to those of the bulk, with the exception of the high pressure die cast AZ91 alloy, where the finer microstructure of the skin layer exhibits a better performance as showed by impedance studies and confirmed in long term immersion tests.

This paper proposes a classification model to predict the split coefficient of gold ore particles as a function of the particle size and gold content. The model is calibrated and validated using data obtained from the sampling of an industrial grinding circuit. Model calibration is based on a complete simulation of the circuit and involves parameters related to the gold grain distribution in the ore as well as a grinding and liberation model. Since cyanide is added into the studied grinding circuit, assumptions related to gold dissolution in the mills are made to allow simulation results which reflect industrial behaviour patterns.

"High pressure die casting is a promising process to make thin-wall components with high dimensional accuracy and excellent surface quality. However, the non-uniformity is one of the important features in castings. The inhomogeneity in tensile properties and microstructural characteristics were studied for the castings with different thicknesses made by high pressure die-cast Al-Mg-Si alloys. For the local mechanical properties in the die-castings, the casting skin provided the highest, whereas the casting centre provided the lowest yield strength, UTS and elongation. The yield strength, UTS and elongation were significantly decreased towards the casting centre. The microstructural inhomogeneity is characterised by the segregation of coarse fragmented dendrites, the reduction of solute concentrations of Mg and Si, and the increase of porosity level from the surface to the centre of castings. The growth velocities of eutectic a-Al phase estimated using the Jackson-Hunt model confirm that the growth variation is larger in the thin castings than that in thick castings.INTRODUCTION Inhomogeneity is an inherent characteristic in as-cast microstructures of a variety of alloys because of their non-uniform chemistry, microstructure, defects, topology and the resultant mechanical properties in the different ranges of localization (Campbell, 2003). Generally, three types of inhomogeneities characterise casting microstructures, which include (a) the casting defects of shrinkage and gas porosity, misruns, cold shuts, inclusions, hot tears and hot spots; (b) the non-uniform microstructure from the surface to the centre of castings; and (c) the non-uniform microstructure from the dendrites grown from primary solidification and the structure formed during the subsequent eutectic solidification in inter-dendritic regions. The chemical composition and the morphology between the primary dendrites and the inter-dendritic eutectics also differ in the as-cast microstructure. Obviously, the inhomogeneity is different in the castings obtained from different casting processes."

"IntroductionThe Hat Creek coal field contains low-grade coal deposits which are the thickest in the world. The diamond drilling and geophysical surveys conducted by B.C. Hydro over the last six years have indicated in excess of 2 billion tonnes of sub-bituminous to lignitic coal. The coal field is in the Interior Plateau Dry Belt, about 240 km northeast of Vancouver, and contains two explored, nearsurface coal deposits amenable to surface mining (Fig. I). The No. I deposit contains approximately 740 million tonnes of coal at 17.71 MJ / kg, or 7,600 Btu/lb, at 34.82% ash and 24% moisture. The No. 2 deposit to the south contains appreciably more coal resources at somewhat lower grade, but it has not been explored so extensively because of its higher stripping ratio. Therefore most of the exploration activities to date have been directed toward the development of the No. I deposit. The No . I coal deposit has been selected as the source of fuel for a proposed thermal powerplant to be built about 5 km east of the deposit. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the data obtained from the diamond drilling and the geophysical logging in the No. I deposit between 1974 and 1979. An attempt is made to explain the depositional environment of the Hat Creek coal measures. Because the understanding of the depositional environment in.a particular basin is essentially an evaluation of all the geologic properties of the area, the available geological information in the No. I deposit has been compiled on the basis of consistent criteria. This includes data on the lithology of the coal measures, thickness and areal distribution of the elastic sediments, and on the changes in the megascopic stratigraphic profile based on geophysical correlation. The palynopetrographic relationship and detailed sedimentological aspects are not examined in this paper. Such studies should provide important information relating the causal vegetal and chemical responses of the coals to -environmental changes. Extensive deposition of surficial materials during de-glaciation left most of the area of the Upper Hat Creek Valley devoid of bedrock exposures. Structural and stratigraphic features are hidden beneath glacial deposits and/or post-Eocene volcanics. As a result, the geological interpretation of the Hat Creek coal basin has been based primarily on drilling and geophysical data. Because of this, any explanation of the depositional environment details is tentative until the deposits are stripped for development."

The production of both lead and zinc in Canada has steadily increased during recent years until today Canada ranks among the world's leading producers of both of these metals. The high prices which they have commanded have led to an energetic search for new deposits and also to an investigation of abandoned properties which, under the present conditions of better prices and more efficient methods of treatment, offer chances of commercial success. It is confidently expected that during the next few years success in both these lines of activity will further increase Canada's lead and zinc output, giving her a still higher ranking among the world's producers. In 1926, approximately 140,000 tons of metallic lead was produced from ores mined in Canada, and of this, 125,000 tons was refined in Canada at Tadanac, B.C. During the same year the production of metallic zinc from Canadian ores amounted to 68,000 tons, of which 62,000 tons was refined at Tadanac. History Of Lead and Zinc in Canada The production of lead in Canada is much older than that of zinc. The chief source has always been the interior of British Columbia. As earl y as the 'eighteen twenties', Indians and Hudson's Bay Company's trappers had discovered an outcrop of lead ore on the site of the present Blue Bell mine on the east shore of Kootenay lake, but it was not until1865 that active prospecting for lode deposits began. In the early nineties the activity of the silver-lead-zinc region of the Slocan reached its culmination and a steady production has been maintained down to the present time.
