?Ellatzite Med? is one of the biggest mining companies in Bulgaria, processing about 12,000,000 t of ore per year. Waste materials left after extraction of copper concentrate are deposited in tailings dam ?Benkovski 2?. The hydraulic structure is built according to the downstream method, through hydrocyclonization where the downstream batter and the body of the wall are formed by the separated coarse sand particles of the separated tailings. In connection with the prolonged concession of Ellatzite Med and the enlarged capacity of Benkovski 2, the tailings dam has expanded on to the surrounding terrain. To guarantee a normal hydrocyclonization and build up of a tailings wall during waste deposition from the ore mill, the technological scheme of the hydraulic transport system of Benkovski 2 has been changed.

Friction Stir Welding (F SW) is a novel "green" manufacturing technique due to its energy efficiency and environmental friendliness. This solid-state joining process involves a rotating tool consisting of a shoulder and/or a probe. The shoulder applies a downward pressure to the work-piece surface, constrains the plasticized material around the probe, generates heat through the friction and causes plastic deformation in a relatively thin layer under the bottom surface of the shoulder. The rotating probe mainly drags along, plasticizes, and mixes the adjacent material in the stir zone, creating a joint without fusion. Friction Stir Processing (FSP), a variant of FSW, has been developed to manufacture composites, locally eliminate casting defects, refine microstructure and/or improve the associated mechanical and physical properties including strength, ductility, fatigue, creep, formability and corrosion resistance. However, major challenges such as tool design and wear currently limit the use of F SW/P for manufacturing applications, particularly for high melting temperature or high strength alloys. In this review, the FSW/P tools are briefly summarized in terms of the tool types, shapes, dimensions, materials and wear behaviors.

"The principles involved in the use and application of mathematical models as an aid to the development of advanced process control computer systems are described briefly. This is followed by a brief survey of known models of this kind for the simulation of mining industry processes.The main part of the paper describes a dynamic model of the flotation process developed by Canadian General Electric. Using flotation rate constants for each species of mineral and gangue, the model provides a numerical solution of the differential equations describing cell behaviour. The cell mode] is used repeatedly as a subroutine in the •over-all-plant model. The features of the cell and plant models are described.Simulation runs from the plant model show stream .assays and other indications of plant behaviour printed typically in 1-to 10-minute steps for several hours of •Operation following typical disturbances such as changes in feed rate or reagent addition rate. The simulation can :Show expected behaviour for both uncontrolled and computer-controlled plants."

"The mine operator has two prime objectives when he operates a mine: (l) the mine must be safe, and (2) the mine must operate with the lowest possible costs. The operator constantly faces a dilemma; if he is over cautious with regard to safety, his costs may be very high, and if he is over-zealous in trying to reduce costs, the safety of his operation may be jeopardized.Modern bulk mining methods rely heavily on high productivity non-entry stoping techniques (e.g. open stoping, VCR, etc.). Such techniques have the advantage of removing the operator from the active and sometimes dangerous mining face and ofminimizing costly development. On the other hand, this generally results in a certain loss of flexibility in following irregular ore-waste contacts. If stopes are opened too large and/or are inadequately supported, severe dilution with resulting escalating costs usually results. If initial access drift support is inadequate for latter mine induced stresses high rehabilitation costs may also be incurred.Optimization of stope dimensions should logically occur as part of a general mine rock engineering program, within the over-all mine planning context. The same program should help highlight those areas where drift rehabilitation may be a problem.Whenever successful mining is performed, rock engineering is being applied, either by design or by chance. The cost implications of planned practical rock engineering as an integral part of mine planning and design can be very significant to the ultimate mining ""bottom line"". At Noranda Minerals Inc. allowable stope dimensions are derived using a combination of numerical stress analysis and empirical design techniques. This paper discusses the use of the above techniques and their limitations as tools for rock mechanics based stope dimension optimization. The potential cost implications of such design efforts within the general mine planning context are also addressed."

"Résumé- Le gîte de Pb-Zn de Gays River s'accompagne d'anomalies des propriétés de la matière organique (MO) et des assemblages de minéraux d'argile (AMA). L'association entre la minéralisation, la distribution de la réflectance de la MO et des AMA suggère que ces traceurs peuvent servir à l'exploration des sulfures de métaux de base dans cette région.A l'emplacement du gîte, la réflectance varie considérablement (0,80% à 1,88%), pouvant même afficher une baisse avec l'enfouissement, ce qui est interprété comme une altération chimique de la MO. Les valeurs les plus élevées s'accompagnent localement de quelques textures en mosaïque et délimitent une anomalie thermique au centre sud de la région. Parmi les minéraux des argiles identifiés, l'illite et la chlorite sont terrigènes alors que la smectite, la kaolinite et la corrensite sont authigènes et, à l'instar de l'altération de la MO, résultent des nouveaux équilibres chimiques créés suite à la précipitation des sulfures.Abstract- The Gays River Pb-Zn ore deposit is associated with anomalies defined from the characters of the organic matter (OM) and from the clay minerals assemblages. The relationships be­ tween these anomalies and the mineralization at the mine suggest that these parameters can be used as new guides for the exploration for base-metal sulfides in this area.The vitrinite reflectance (RJ shows a wide range of values (0.8% to 1.88%) and exhibits an anomalous suppressive effect with depth of burial at the mine site, suggesting a chemical alteration of the OM. The highest R, values are associated with mosaic textures and outline a thermal anomaly at the south-center of the studied area. Among the identified clay minerals, illite and chlorite are terrigenous, whereas smectite, kaolinite and corrensite are authigenous and, like the alteration of the OM, are due to the new chemical equilibria resulting from the precipitation of the sulfides."

"AbstractThis paper describes the geological procedures used to evaluate two mineable high-volatile C bituminous coal seams at Coal Valley , located in the outer foothills belt of the Rocky Mountain Eastern Slopes in west-central Alberta. Lexco Testing Ltd., the exploration arm of Luscos: Ltd., owns and operates an all -weather geophysical logging system which provides gamma, focused density , single-point resistance and caliper logs in a single pass. A mathematical analysis for a theoretical interpretation of the single-point resistance log confirms empirical research that bed boundaries are located at a point 10% from the bottom of the curve. A unique and efficient triple-tube, wireline rotary coring system cuts an undisturbed 0.076m- diameter core in a plastic liner at recoveries exceeding 90% . Although only 10% of the total footage is cored, it provides vital analytical and geotechnical data, and, when integrated with the geophysical logs, improves the quality and extends the usefulness of interpreting both sets of data. All data are programmed to produce computerized structure contour, isopach, isoratio and isoquality maps, and volume calculations.General IntroductionTHE COAL VALLEY AREA is located in the outer foothills belt of the Rocky Mountain Eastern Slopes, 60 miles (96 km) by road southwest of Edson, Alberta. Luscar Ltd. holds leases which total 49,000 acres (19,830 ha) , of which 18,300 acres (7,410 ha) have been assigned to the Coal Valley mine area (Fig. 1 ) . There are two Paleocene high-volatile C bituminous coal seams initially developed for mining within a total stratigraphic interval of 750 feet (230 m ) (Fig. 2 ). These seams strike generally NW, and in the undisturbed areas generally dip westerly from 10 to 30 degrees."

This paper describes basic parameters, such as surface forces and film elasticity, affecting the stability of foams (two-phase froths). We used the thin film pressure balance (TFPB) technique to measure the surface forces in foam films stabilized with various frothers such as pentanol, octanol, methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC), and polypropylene glycol (PPG). The results were compared with the foam stabilities measured experimentally and the film elasticities calculated using a new model developed by Wang and Yoon (2006). It was found that at low electrolyte (NaCI) concentrations foam stability is controlled by both film elasticity and surface forces (or disjoining pressure), the relative contributions from each changing with frother type and concentration. Further, the kinetics of film thinning was studied at a high electrolyte concentration. The results obtained in the present work showed that the major role of a frother is to decrease the hydrophobic force rather than to increase the film elasticity. This conclusion is drawn from the observation that at the typical frother (MIBC) concentrations employed in flotation, frother additions cause sharp decreases in hydrophobic force while causing relatively little changes in film elasticity.

ABSTRACT: Despite many years of practical applications in mineral processing plants, the potential of column flotation has still not been fully exploited. The challenge in measuring some key variables is certainly an important contributing factor to this situation. Reliable online measurement of varibles, such as the froth depth, bias, gas hold-up, frother concentration, bubble surface area flux, and bubble size distribution, provides opportunities for the application of various advanced control strategies and real-time optimization based on an economic criterion. For several years, Université Laval’sLaboratoire d’observation et d’optimisation des procédés researchers have been working on these opportunities. This paper describes the most recent advances and current research trends.

In potash ore flotation, carried out in NaCI-KCI saturated brine (about 6-7 molar KC1 and NaCI solution), long-chain primary amines are used as flotation collectors. Long-chain primary amines are poorly soluble in water and their solubility further decreases at high electrolyte concentration. For ionic surfactants there is a characteristic temperature (Krafft Point, KP) below which their solubility is too low for micellization. In a previous study, the effect of pH on the KP of dodecylammonium chloride in water was determined [Q. Dai and J.S. Laskowski, Langmuir, 7, 1361-1365 (1991)]. This paper deals with the effect of electrolyte concentration on the KP of dodecylammonium chloride. The derived theoretical relationship between the KP and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) for dodecylamine can be used to calculate the KP for electrolyte concentrations of up to 0.5 mol/L (about 8% NaCI-KCI brine). A simple experimental procedure for the determination of the KP for higher electrolyte concentrations is also described. The results show that the Krafft point of dodecylamine increases from about 17-18°C (in distilled water) to about 80°C at 16% brine saturation.

The merit of reduction-in-area as a criterion of quality in metals is shown to lie in its influence on breaking stress, but the virtue of elongation is not easy to find. In order to assess the value of elongation, either as a measure of quality or as a guide to design, it will be necessary to separate the overall de-formation occurring in tension tests from the localized deformation associated with localized reduction in area. The obstacles to a successful solution of this problem have been shown to be more formidable than is generally appreciated, and a new solution to the problem has been suggested. This solution involves a de-vice by which an electric circuit is broken when the particular value of strain is reached that is to be taken as the point of separation between general and localized deformation. The report presents results from a number of tests on both low-carbon and alloy steels. Geological examination of the underground workings of the Horne and Aldermac mines during the summer of 1927 has brought out the following facts: (1) That the ores tend to replace bodies of breccia or tuff rather than massive lava or dyke material; (2) That the faulting and folding at the Horne has had a pronounced effect in localizing the ore-bodies; (3) That there is a tendency in cert?-in cases for ore-bodies to be localized beneath gently dipping dykes, which acted as impervious roofs; (4) That there is a great difference in age between the chalcopyrite part of the ore-bodies and the pyrite-pyrrhotite portion. A statement of the development to date at the Aldermac mine is also included in the paper. ALDERMAC MINE The Aldermac property is made up of eight claims in the western half of Boischatel township, Quebec, including 747 acres in all. The mine itself is approximately three miles, 25 chains from the west boundary, and four miles, 55 chains from the north boundary, of the township.

En outre, un modèle de simulation est en cours de création afin d?évaluer les gains incrémentaux liés à l?application d?une série d?innovations dans une exploitation minière. "Following initial discovery in 1991, BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc. opened Canada’s first diamond mine, the EKATI Diamond Mine (EKATI) in the Northwest Territories on October 14, 1998. Four short years later, on November 29, 2002, saw the opening of North America’s first underground diamond mine, the Koala North mine. Nestled between the original Panda open pit and the new Koala pit, which is in the early stages of production, Koala North represents the only underground kimberlite mining venture in Arctic conditions outside the new underground mines being developed by ALROSA in the Yakutsk region of eastern Russia. Extensive underground kimberlite mining has been practiced in the Republic of South Africa for much of the 20th century and continues today.Underground mining represents a key component of the long-term business plan for EKATI. As various open pits reach their economic limit, continued recovery of high-value ore at depth is dependent upon the ability to productively mine the kimberlite pipes by underground methods. As a function of its location, size, and value, the Koala North pipe is ideally positioned to host the first underground mine at EKATI. Koala North is designed and approved as a learning mine, from which to gain valuable experience in preparation for the potential mining of other larger, higher value pipes by underground methods in the development, the Koala North mine is well into its production ramp-up phase and currently producing at around 1,200 t/day from the first two production levels."

"Le gonflement des boulettes d'hématite à été étudié à l'aide d'une méthode de mesure standard ISO ainsi qu'à l'aide d 'une méthode de mesure dilatométrique.La première méthode a servi à l'étude des boulettes haute silice (5% SiO2) dont l'indice de basicité (IB = CaO + MgO -i- SiO2 + Al2O3) a été ajustée soit à l'aide d'une addition de dolomie, soit à l'aide d'une addition de pierre à chaux, soit à l'aide d'une addition de ces deux composes. L'indice de basicité variait de 0.05 à 0.12. Les résultats de gonfle ment obtenus à 1000?C dans une atmosphère de 40 CO - 60 N2 ont permis de montrer qu’indépendamment de l'indice de basicité c'est la dolomie qui contribue le plus à diminuer le gonflement par rapport à la pierre à chaux. L'utilisation de l'indice de basicité comme critère de sélection des boulettes est discutée.La méthode dilatométrique a servi à l'étude du gonfle ment de deux types de boulettes préparées à partir de deux concentrés de fer et dont la teneur en silice a été fixée à 2.5% et 0 5%. Ces deux types de boulettes ont reçues les mêmes additions de liant en quantité et en nature. La détermination en continue du gonflement, à 950?C dans 40 CO - 60 N2, a permis d'une part de mieux cerner le niveau de réduction auquel correspond le maximum de gonflement et d'autre part de montrer que l’allure des courbes de gonflement est étroitement liée à la nature du liant. Une augmentation de la teneur en silice des concentres contribue à diminuer le gonflement des boulettes.Des essais de réduction de gonflement non isothermes ont été réalisés à des montées de température à 10 et 20?C/min. Les résultats indiquent que le gonflement déterminé dans les conditions non iso thermes est inferieur à celui obtenu lors des essais isothermes. On discute alors de la validité des essais standards de gonflement qui sont utilisés pour prédire le comportement des boulettes lors de leur réduction dans un haut fourneau."

In the framework of the optimization of Teniente Converter operation the new system of automatic flux feeding through gar-gun was implemented in the Potrerillos Smelter, Codelco Chile, Salvador Division. The control algoritm based on simple iron and silica balance adjusted by empirical coefficients was incorporated in the logical programmer. The programmer works in real time gathering information from the plant instrumentation events and introduced chemical assays of concentrate, slag and flux. Through the auto-tuning of the automatic operation the criterions of optimal flux dosage were determined. Four month of operation of the automatic flux feeding system demonstrated the stabilization of magnetite content in the slag in the narrow range from 18 to 20% and the decrease of flux consumption, corresponding to annual savings US$ 340,000. Additionally, the automatic system helps operators in the control room in fast determination of optimal fluxing and avoid the errors in flux dosage affecting the slag quality and its impact on refractory wear.

The reduction of aqueous slurries of uranyl carbonate at elevated temperature with compressed hydrogen m the presence of metal catalysts and certain organic promoters has been shown. to yield uranium dioxide. The reduction takes place in a sequence of steps. The purity and sintering properties of the dioxide make it of interest as a starting material for fuel element production. Simple control can be exercised over the surface area and oxygen/uranium ratio of the product during reduction. URANIUM dioxide for fueling atomic power reactors 1s conventionally produced as a powder by simultaneously decomposing and reducing ammonium diuranate with hydrogen in a furnace at high temperature. Blind boring of shafts is becoming an increasingly important part of shaft sinking. Blind-bored shafts have reached diameters of 25 It in Europe and 16-1/2 ft in the United States. Much of the technology developed for blind boring has evolved from the technology of drilling wells for oil and gas production. Blind boring offers economic advantage in a number of situations where conventional shaft sinking either is extremely difficult or very expensive by virtue of large-capacity aquifers which must be penetrated, unstable ground or where very rapid sinking is required. In sedimentary rocks, blind boring is cost competitive with conventional sinking, in diameters of about 12 ft or less. Blind boring is not competitive with raise boring where conditions are favourable for raise boring. Blind boring does, however, offer greater flexibility than raise boring and can be performed in situations where raise boring is inefficient or impossible. Combination machinery has been developed to perform both blind boring and raise boring, so that the machine can be used effectively in situations where only the near-surface portions of the shaft are unfavourable for raise boring. Development work is being supported by the United States Bureau of Mines for blind boring equipment capable of boring shafts up to 30 feet in diameter.

High-voltage direct -current transmission is a relatively new technology. The successful development and operation of AC/DC converters, capable of handling large power blocks, have made HVDC transmission generally accepted by utility engineer s and planners around the world. HVDC technology still has significant development potential and, as a result, it is expected that equipment costs will escalate at a substantially slower rate than those of conventional AC equipment. This development will also result in still more compact terminal stations. This paper reviews two modern HVDC installations. In Zaire in Africa. a 1700-km overhead DC line rated at 500 kv, will supply power to the copper mining district in the Shaba region. Another HVDC link connects Norway and Denmark through a submarine cable rated at 250 kv. This is the longest HVDC cable in the world, 127 km, and the water depth , maximum 530 m, is also much greater than for any previous similar cable. The reasons for selecting HVDC are discussed, and the design and layouts are presented.

"The Magnet Cove barite-sulphide deposit is a raking pipe-like body that replaced and partly filled a large brecciated zone at the junction of two faults at the contact between sedimentary rocks of the Horton and Windsor Groups of Mississippian age. The principal minerals in the deposit are siderite, barite, hematite, pyrite, marcasite, galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, tennantite, proustite, pearceite, acanthite and stromeyerite. The mineral assemblage and textural relationships indicate that the minerals were deposited from low-temperature solutions. The source of the elements in the deposit is believed to be the enclosing sedimentary rocks, with connate or ground waters as the transporting medium, and solubility products as the governing factor controlling the abundance and order of deposition of the minerals."
