This paper documents the relationship between material handling and processing costs compared to blasting cost. The old adage, 'The cheapest crushing is done in the pit', appears accurate in this case study. Comparison of the accumulated cost of powder, selected wear materials and electricity, indicate a strong, inverse correlation with powder factor (lbs powder/long ton of rock). In this case, the increased powder cost is more than offset by electrical savings alone. Measurable, overall costs decline while shovel and crusher productivity rise by about five per cent when powder factor rises by 15 per cent. These trends were previously masked by the effects of weather, ore grade fluctuations and accounting practices.

In early-1989, subsidence due to voids at the top of previously filled stopes and stopes awaiting filling,began to threaten the 15 level fill conveyor horizon. This together with the need to maintain production targets meant that a method was required to significantly increase fill placement.Alternative methods of placing dry fill underground were investigated. One option was to drill 200 mm boreholes from surface directly into stopes 600 - 800 metres underground. A drilling program was successfully undertaken, and resulted in the placement of more than 800 000 tonnes of dry aggregate fill via four boreholes.This paper details the drilling program undertaken and discusses the difficulties encountered, the fill placement system and the project costs.

Integrated geological interpretation of aerial photographs and Landsat images revealed that the gold mineralisation at Kyauk Pahto took place in a narrow zone of tension fractures within part of a previously unrecognised dextral wrench fault system. The latter is the wider manifestation of the well known Sagaing (right-lateral) strike-slip fault which has a length of more than 1 000 km, and it demarcates the boundary between the Indo-Australian and Asian plates. A subtle, right-handed kink affects the full width of the Sagaing Wrench-fault System at about the latitude of Kyauk pahto, and the extra dilatancy imposed on the tension fracture zone facilitated episodic ingress of mineralising hydrothermal fluids by "seismic pumping".

A total of 12 alkalic porphyry centres of Late Ordovician age have been discovered in two mineral districts within NSW. The alkalic porphyry deposits are hosted within shoshonitic volcanic centres that formed where a major cross-arc basement structure (the Lachlan Transverse Zone) cut the Ordovician Macquarie Arc. The Macquarie Arc was amalgamated with the back-arc basin sediments of the Wagga Marginal Basin and with the proto-Pacific margin of Gondwanaland to form the Lachlan Fold Belt after the cessation of arc magmatism in the Late Ordovician. Within the Ordovician volcanic belts of NSW, the alkalic porphyries are the most significant mineral deposits economically. The combined resource of the Cadia district porphyries (729 Mt @ 0.79 g/t Au and 0.30 per cent Cu) makes Cadia the worldÆs seventh largest known porphyry gold system and the largest known gold resource in an alkalic porphyry system (574 t Au). Hydrothermal alteration in the alkalic porphyries comprises a complex sequence of potassic, calc-potassic, sodic, calc-sodic, propylitic and late-stage, typically fault-controlled phyllic assemblages. Hematite dusting is common in many of these alteration assemblages, giving the intrusions and the altered volcano-sedimentary host sequences a distinctive pink-orange colouration. Intensely developed hydrothermal alteration assemblages are localised to within a few hundred metres of the composite intrusions that sourced the mineralising fluids, making these deposits difficult exploration targets. Sulfides are typically zoned, with several of the deposits having bornite-rich cores, chalcopyrite-dominant annuluses and pyritic outer haloes. Gold is well correlated with bornite in most of the deposits, and with chalcopyrite at Cadia Hill.

The effect on profitability in the short term and viability in the long term requires accurate estimation of grade and tonnages. The application of the Ditch Witch Trenching Machine as a grade control tool has occurred rapidly and the machine is now a working tool in many mines throughout Western Australia.

Despite this, an industrial application of the technique is yet to be developed. Renison Limited operates an underground tin mine employing both cut and fill and open stope methods, at Renison Bell on the west coast of Tasmania. Mining in the region commenced in the 1890's. Development of the current mining operation commenced in 1965. The ventilation system used at Renison in its present configuration is a function of current mining methods, orebody characteristics and prevailing Tasmanian Department of Mines Inspection Regulations.

The Mons Cupri Cu-Pb-Zn deposit is situated within a complex Archaean volcanic sequence dominated by rhyolitic fragmental rocks. This sequence is underlain by a 150 m group of rhyolitic ash flow tuffs with minor conglomerate and sandstone, and is overlain by approximately 180 m of dacite and andesite flows. The Mons Cupri sequence itself consists of several elongate or circular rhyolite domes, flanked by rhyolitic fragmental rocks ranging up to 400 m in thickness away from the domes. The lithology of clasts (typically 1 cm to 1.5 m in size) provides strong evidence that the flanking fragmental unit was derived by explosive eruptions associated with the rhyolite domes. An approximately 15 m thick shale horizon, bleached and silicified at its base, overlies both the rhyolite domes and the frag- mental unit. A south-dipping chloritic pipe-like body, with near-surface dimensions of 1,000 by 250 m and narrowing at depth to produce a cone-shaped cross section, lies within the rhyolitic frag- mental rocks about 250 m north of the largest rhyolite'dome in the Mons Cupri vicinity. Its east west elongation parallels that of the rhyolite dome. Ghost fragments indicate that the material in this fissure is a severely chloritized derivative of the rhyolitic frag- mental unit. Batu Hijau is a porphyry copper-gold deposit located on Sumbawa Island in the western Banda Arc of Indonesia. The deposit has been evaluated from 54000m of drilling in 105 diamond drill holes over a surface area of 1.2km2 and to a depth of 1000m below surface (412m below sea level). A provisional plan is being evaluated to mine 642 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.61% Cu and 0.55g/t Au (variable cutoff) from an open pit in the higher grade portion of the resource. The deposit is associated with a caic-alkaline intrusive complex that was emplaced in a thick sequence of andesitic pyroclastic rocks. The oldest and most widespread intrusion is porphyritic to medium-grained, equigranular, quartz hornblende diorite. At Batu Hijau the western diorite contact zone was intruded by two phases of tonalite. The older tonalite is a stock increasing from 200m diameter at surface to 500m at sea level. It consists of quartz, plagioclase and hornblende phenocrysts set in a groundmass of similar composition. A younger tonalite intrudes the tonalite stock, quartz and plagioclase phenocrysts are more abundant and it has a finer groundmass than the older tonalite. Brecciation occurs near the older tonalite contacts but there are no breccia pipes or late-stage features such as pebbldykes or postmineralisation intrusive rocks.

During 1979 the writer had the privilege of interviewing about 50 people with varying degrees of involvement in the industrial arena and all of them in one way and another, had a part to play in the huge and intricate saga of Australian employee relations. They fell into the following' categories Industrial Relations Officers/Managers Academics Politicians Union Officials Representatives of Employer Associations Senior Industrialists Commission Members (State and Federal) Sundry (Journalists, Government Officials). This paper seeks to give an account of their views on various aspects of industrial relations. The interviews conducted were all on a personal and confidential basis so it can be expected that sources will not be identified. Suffice it to say that this account represents, albeit in "potted" form, the opinions of some of the most experienced individuals in the country. It will be seen that in most of the vital areas there is a remarkable lack of consensus. It should be noted that this lack of consensus existed within each of the groups mentioned.

Mount Gibson Iron Limited (æMount Gibson IronÆ) has made the difficult transition from a privately owned company with an iron resource to a publicly listed company owning and operating a profitable iron ore mine in the mid-west of Western Australia. The development of the company is described with particular emphasis on the Tallering Peak operations, resources, associated infrastructure and logistical arrangements; the Mt Gibson hematite and magnetite resources and the proposals to develop the magnetite resource as part of an integrated project through to iron pellet production. The concept of tailoring the relatively small ship capacity of the outturn port of Geraldton to appropriately sized inturn ports in China to allow direct delivery of product is discussed. The companyÆs philosophy of building shareholder value by progressive development of its relatively modest resources (compared with the Pilbara) is discussed. In pursuit of long-term business success Mount Gibson Iron has formed symbiotic relationships with strong business partners whose aims and objectives mirror or complement those of Mount Gibson Iron.

The thickener overflow of zinc concentrate, obtained from flotation process in the Angouran plant located in Iran, contains a large quantity of slimes which were transferred to the tailing ponds. These slimes have caused problems of storing and environmental aspects in the Angouran area. The objective of this research is to describe the extraction of zinc from these slimes by leaching method using sulfuric acid in pilot plant scale.Chemical analyses showed that these tailing materials contain 35 per cent of zinc. By XRD analysis, smithsonite is identified as the major constituent. Calcite, dolomite, and cerussite are found as carbonate minerals. A minimal amount of Zn occurs as hemimorphite. Quartz, kaolinite, clinochlore and muscovite are other silicate minerals in the slimes.In the optimal conditions, ie acid leach at pH of 1, temperature of 55¦C, reaction time of 120 minutes and solid-liquid ratio of 1:3 and neutralisation with Ca(OH)2 at pH = 4.5, temperature = 70¦C, time = 90 minutes, the total recovery of zinc obtained was 95 per cent.

Authorisation No.66 (to Prospect) was allocated to R.W. Miller & Co. Pty. Ltd. on 1st November, 1976. Exploration has brought coal reserves to measured status in the Jerry's Plains sub-group which are about 550m. thick. The immediately lower Vane Sub-group, about 200m. thick, includes about 20 seams. The total measured and indicated reserves of the two sub-groups based on the criteria adopted by the company amount to 1362 million tonnes in situ. This very large resource is subject to very many mining constraints both physical and economic which limit the saleable reserves under present conditions to about 120 million tonnes. The results of the calculation of reserves after exploration is complete in a deep multiple seam situation is dependent upon the criteria used to include or exclude seams in the reserves. These criteria are state- ments of the miner's expectations of the market, mining and coal preparation technology, local and national politics and the law as it may be applied in the future.

There has been little change in the lead smelting practice at Mount Isa since 1939 when the metallurgy and general practice were outline by Raney and Blott.The purpose of this paper is to descriqe some of the operational details that have influenced the overall production. The slag fall hns been increased by the lowering of the lead content of the concentrate. Further, as it is the practice to include iron on the furnace charge and carry a higher lime content in the slag, both factors have produced notable results in furnace operations.All blast furnace gases are filtered in a baghouse and this unit is. being further extended to take all smelter gases, thus eliminating the existing Cottrell plant handling Dwight-Lloyd gases.The lead smelter was closed down from April 1943, to May 1946, during which time blister copper was produced.The report is subdivided as follows:-1. Electrochemical investigations of the flotation of sulphide minerals are re- viewed. Flotation with thiol collectors is interpreted in terms of a "mixed poten- tial" model in which the process leading to hydrophobicity is the anodic oxidation of the collector at the mineral surface and this is driven by the cathodic reduc- tion of oxygen. Electrochemical studies have identified the products of anodic oxidation as chemisorbed collector, metal collector compounds, and dithiolates; the products formed in each situation depend on the collector used, the mineral under study, and the pretreatment of the mineral surface. Investigations on galena, pyrite, and chalcocite are discussed. Electrochemical and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies have been used to determine the products of surface oxi- dation of sulphide minerals in order to elucidate the mechanism of collectorless flotation. The mixed potential mechanism allows consideration to be made of the ways in which flotation of sulphides with thiols can be inhibited. Examples of depressant action are presented. The relevance of electrochemical investi- gations to practical flotation is Discussed.

Consolidated Rutile Limited's (CRL) operations incorporate the exploration, mining, processing, marketing and distribution of mineral sands. This paper outlines the current scope of CRL operations in vegetated sand dunes on North Stradbroke Island (NSI), Queensland. Included are some specific comments relating to design and construction of high capacity dredges which float in artificial ponds and are an integral part of mining high dune ore reserves. Three floating cutter suction dredges with combined sand throughput capacity in excess of 7000 tph are used in mining operations on NSI. Initial processing is by gravity and magnetic methods on large wet concentrators also floating in the artificial ponds. Spiral sluices are used exclusively in the newest concentrator, which has the highest recovery of heavy minerals.

Many mining operations developed in the last 15 years have not performed to expectations. Problems experienced include lower than planned development and production rates, geotechnical/stability problems, unplanned dilution, reduced metallurgical performance and unbudgeted capital/operating costs. Most of these problems can be directly attributed to decisions made on the basis of geoscience interpretations and estimates. Recent case studies continue to provide examples of unplanned events linked to the use of geoscience information. These studies illustrate the need to improve the way geological information is used in mine feasibility and operations. Comprehensive assessment of the consequences of inappropriate technical decision making is still rare; however, the information that is reported highlights the significant financial impact on a companyÆs bottom line.

Two column flotation cells have been installed as single-stage rougher cleaners at Batu Hijau. The objective was to provide additional residence time in the cleaner circuit to maintain maximum recovery during high mill throughput and high feed grade periods. Installation of the columns has allowed the relatively coarse, well-liberated rougher concentrate and the relatively fine, low-grade scavenger concentrate to be treated separately, improving metallurgical performance in the cleaner circuit. Plant results show that the columns produce a high-grade concentrate at an average stage copper recovery of approximately 80 per cent. There is also indication of increases in both overall plant copper recovery and final concentrate copper grade. In addition, the operability and stability of the cleaner circuit has greatly improved.

Ventilation characteristics and the occurrence of nocturnal surface inversions have been investigated within the Mount Whaleback open cut iron ore mine at Newman in Western Australia. When winds are light and/or nocturnal surface inversions form within the pit, episodes of atmospheric stagnation can occur with resultant accumulation of dust, diesel exhaust fumes, and sulphur dioxide evolved from spontaneous combustion of pyritic shale. Nocturnal surface inversions were recorded outside the mine on more than two-thirds of nights. Inside the pit, inversions were much less frequent - occurring on roughly 20% of nights when they were observed outside - and much weaker - the maximum temperature difference being 5 C¦ over 210 m inside the pit compared with 15 C¦ over 150 m outside.
