The main regularities of the tectonic history of the Circumpacific belt's Asian segment are discussed. The established longitudinal metallogenic zoning is characterized by essential copper specialization being replaced in the.continentward direction by tin-tungsten and then by copper-gold-molybdenum and-tin-lead- zinc ones. The zones indicated show specific magmatism and ore forming fluid composition. The eastern margin of Eurasia experienced specific tectonic history and exhibits a wide variety of mineral deposits. It is composed of the Siberian and Sino-Korean cratons and of the largest mobile elements of tectonosphere like the Hyperborean, Urals-Mongolian, Mediterranean and Circumpacific belts. The Earth's Atlantic segment mobile features show deep penetration of their geosyncline-fold systems into the eastern margin of Asia. A good example is the Urals-Mongolian belt, its Intra-Asian branch being located within the continental margin. The Intra-Asian structural features have WE and NE trending, while folding process moved southward : Karelides and Baikalides are found in the Transbaikalia and the Soviet Far East (Stanovoy, Bodaibo-Patom, Baikal- Vitim, Selenga-Yablonovy fold regions)

A brief introduction is given of the scale and of some special features of South African gold mining; it is noted that great depth of mining and narrowness of the reefs, and hardness and abrasiveness of the rock are the main sources of the problems of the industry. The most inhibiting problems are: Excessive rock pressure occcurring in conjunction with rockbursts, hot and humid working places due to high virgin rock temperature and auto-compression of the air, and low level of productivity. Conventional solutions applied ordinarily in mining do not promise to eliminate, or even alleviate, these difficulties.

The manufacture of steel from raw materials which have to be mined, transported and processed must affect the environment. Steelmaking, like almost every other stage of manufacture involves the unwanted production of dust and fume; thus a major part of the steel industry's effort to minimize changes to the environment is the collection, treatment and recycling of dust and fume to avoid pollution of the atmosphere and waterways. The paper describes how this achieved in the various steelmaking processes and shows the diversity of problems-and their solutions in this context. Particular emphasis is, given to basic oxygen steelmaking.

Until recently, nickel laterite projects have been largely ignored, due to their supposedly higher treatment costs compared with sulphides, and to their perceived processing difficulties. A number of laterite projects in the 1970s were abandoned because of high capital and operating costs, while others experienced severe technical difficulties. Conventional wisdom had it that laterites would not be exploited until most of the sulphide orebodies had been depleted. Why then, have Australian mining and exploration companies started a resurgence of interest in the treatment of nickel laterites? It all began with the Bulong project, which has been under study since 1987, while more recently two further projects, Murrin Murrin and Cawse, have been initiated and are being fast-tracked to take advantage of the current high nickel and cobalt prices. A further project in NSW, Syerston, has also been investigated at bench-scale, but no further development has yet been announced. All these projects have the following advantages: 1. Good location near a major mining centre and,reasonably close to power, water, roads, accommodation and a developed service industry. 2. Straightforward, low cost mining. 3. Low cost of acid or sulphur. 4. Good to very good cobalt credits. In addition, there have been significant technological developments in the design and operation of high pressure autoclaves and high rate thickeners, as well as solvent extraction and electrowinning technology. This has helped to decrease capital costs and technical risks, and has allowed the development of alternative flowsheets to the existing laterite operations (Taylor, 1996).

Broken Hill has a long history of mining and it is without doubt a world-class deposit. It has seen production since 1885, notwithstanding the strikes that made the city infamous in days gone by and has given rise to three of the nation's leading mining companies; BHP, North and CRA. Prior to the formation of Pasminco in 1988, the mining and exploration activities were undertaken by separate companies who were business competitors and tended to operate in relative isolation. There were a few notable exceptions such as the Central Geological Survey of 1936 - 38 (Gustafson, 1939; Gustafson et al, 1950) and the Mine Managers' Association. The latter sponsored many university based research projects. At a local level there was good communication and cross fertilisation within this remote outback centre through personal contacts and professional bodies such as The AusIMM. Pasminco was formed by the merging of the lead-zinc interests of CRA Ltd and North Broken Hill Ltd. In Broken Hill this meant the joining together of North Mine and ZC Mines, the two largest mines then operating on the Line of Lode, to form Pasminco Mining Broken Hill Operations. Classifications of Ni-Cu deposits are based on petrology, geochemistry and the geotectonic setting of host igneous bodies (Naldrett and Cabri, 1976; Besson et al, 1979; Nadrett, 1989). The four major classes in Naldrett's (1989) division rest on the geotectonic setting of the igneous complexes and the classes are further subdivided on the basis of the petrology and geochemistry of the intrusion. A more common subdivision of mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks is based on the environment of rock-forming processes, endogenic or exogenic, intrusive or extrusive, and this subdivision has been applied, in practice, to the classification of sulphide Ni-Cu deposits, too. The extrusive deposits, Class I in Naldrett's (1989) classification, are directly related to volcanic processes whereas all the others refer to the intrusive environment. This paper looks at the differences between the extrusive and intrusive groups of Ni-Cu deposits and presents generic, genetic and structural features of the intrusive group.

At Neavesville gold-silver (electrum) mineralization occurs in steeply-dipping zones of intense fracturing, brecciation and quartz veining within rhyolitic pyroclastics, carbohaceous shales and andesites. Hydro- thermal alteration extends over an area of greater than 3 by 1.5 km. In rhyolitic tuffs, highly silicified zones containing quartz- adularia-illite assemblages are flanked by less silicified assemblages composed of albite, illite-montmorillonite and chlorite. The mineralogy ana sequence of alteration are comparable with the alteration zones which envelop the steam-producing fissures of the active Wairakei and Broadlands geothermal fields. Primary fluid inclusions in quartz from five fissure veins in the Neavesville field show maximum homogenisation temperatures ranging from 220 - 260¦C and salinities of 0.0 - 1.1 wt. % NaCl equivalent, which cover a similar range to actual measured temperatures and salinities in geothermal fluids at Wairakei aria riroaolan¦s. The age of the rhyolitic pyroclastics and related alteration and mineralization is probably Pliocene and Neavesville therefore represents a fossil geothermal system.

In epithennal deposits changes in the character of mineralization in depth and time are conspicuous and abrupt at the interface between supergene and hypogene zones. As the reaction zone migrates downward as a consequence of surface erosion, previously deposited minerals are placed in unstable chemical enviromments and dissolved. This reaction takes place at the base of the epithermal precious metal zone. Examples at Cerro de Pasco, and Casapalca, Peru; Carlin, Nevada; and porphyry copper-gold deposits are cited.

Ultraviolet and infrared spectroscopic analyses and the extended lluckel molecular orbital method were applied to determine the electronic and binding states of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole and the adsorption system of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole on pyrite. 2-mercaptobenzothiazole exists rather in thione form than in thiol forru and the two adsorption peaks in solution were assigned to both 7t--?rt* transitions. 2-mercaptobenzothiazole chemically adsorbs on pyrite mainly due to forming the bond between iron (pyrite) and sulphur (2-mercaptobenzothiazole).

The Filblast Cyanidation Process incorporating intense high shear mixing, high gas mass transfer efficiency and high oxygen concentrations under conditions of elevated pressure has now been been successfully applied in gold cyanidation mills since May 1993. The first commercial unit had a slurry capacity of 110 cubic metres per hour. Since then 230 and 450 cubic metre per hour units have been installed and a 1000 cubic metre per hour unit has been designed. Laboratory and pilot plant Filblasts have also been built.The reactor is a robust, compact in-line or end-of-line device and may be constructed out of a wide range of materials including wear and corrosion resistant alloys and ceramics. The Filblast Process may be applied to high temperature leaching of refractory gold ores and base metal concentrates.

Acid mine drainage is a serious environmental and economic concern, resulting in regulation of the mining industry and significant water treatment costs. An interdisciplinary approach is needed to analyze the many aspects of a complex acid drainage problem. This paper describes the integrated application of techniques from the following fields to the characterization of acid drainage at a large underground lead-zinc mine: 1) hydrogeology, 2) surface stream analysis, 3) structural analysis of fracture distribution, 4) hydrochemistry, 5) geostatistics, and 6) multivariate statistics. The Bunker Hill Mine in northern Idaho, is developed in highly fractured and faulted quartzites and discharges 95 L/sec of water with an average pH of 2.8 and an average zinc concentration of 120 mg/L. Research has been conducted on all aspects of the acid water production and drainage problem. Recharge to the mine has been investigated using geophysical techniques and tracer studies. Fracture mapping and geostatistical analysis of the fracture data have been used to determine characteristics of inflow to the mine workings. Hydrograph analysis techniques have been applied to water flow data within the underground workings. Chemical sampling and analysis have been used to identify acid producing workings, and better understand mechanisms controlling acid water production. Multivariate statistical techniques have been applied to analyze the quality and flow data. Research results from the many subprojects of the Bunker Hill study reveal the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of acid mine drainage problems.

Nickel-iron sulphide mineralization at Nepean, Western Australia occurs within a small Archaean greenstone outlier in granite south of the main Coolgardie greenstone belt. Individual sulphide ore bodies are situated near the foot- wall contact of simply-differentiated en echelon ultramafic sills that have intruded a sequence of sulphide-bearing metasediments and amphibo- lites. The paper describes a detailed section through the No. 2 ultramafic sill and its associated sulphide ore zone, which gave Metals Exploration N.L. the first significant nickel discovery in the Nepean area in 1968. The sill is variable in thickness up to 30 m along a strike length of 600 m, and is truncated to the north by pegmatite intrusion and pinches out to the south. The body has border zones of pyroxenetic composition, now represented by felted aggregates of chlorite and amphibole, and a central peridotitic core in which olivine and orthopyroxene are concentrated towards the base. Textures within the peridotite are dominated by large lath-shaped olivine grains and their serpentine pseudomorphs, which delineate triangular areas composed of talc, chlorite, and amphibole. Orthopyroxene occurs in large ovoid patches and is often replaced by Talc.

The rapid development of geometallurgy in the mining industry has occurred in relatively recent times. Its importance as an independent discipline in the mineral processing world has been emphasised and recognised. To a large degree, this is the result of a growing understanding of the ore type being processed and their application to provide better metallurgical responses in different mineral processing techniques. The development has matured from early progress through to geological knowledge and into the realm of the metallurgist and mining engineer. Working together, they have developed a powerful framework that will interpret a body of mineralisation into measurable properties.The integration of geometallurgy and operations has become of increasingly important due to improvement in understanding of an orebody as a natural system formed by a number of processes and with a definite fabric of mineralisation within different geological domain. These have to be taken into account when creating techniques that will enable operations to extract the valuable components from a distinct type of ore. Incorporation of such knowledge at an early stage of development, such as the feasibility stage significantly reduces the project risk.This paper is written from the unique perspective of a process engineer embedded within a geological team. A Conveyor Belt Fire Test Program was initiated in 1985 by the Approval and Certification Center (A&CC), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor. The purpose was to evaluate the effect of entry air velocities on the burning properties of mine conveyor belts and assess fire test data from large- and small-scale tests. Belts meeting the fire-resistant standards of MSHA and agencies of other countries were tested in small- and large- scale fire tests.

Titrimetric studies have been carried out on the activated carbons Kintal 1105, Norit 2520 and Kuraray 2GA. Titration curves of the carbons before and after acid and water washing and gold loading indicate that the acid-base properties of the carbons are affected by both the method of treatment and also by the loading of gold. It is considered that the pKa values of the functional groups on the carbon surface are in the regions of 11, 7 and 3 respectively.

Pressure hydrometallurgy is becoming an increasingly common unit operation in the treatment of gold and base metal ores and concentrates. The design of an adequate and appropriate pilot-scale testwork program is, therefore, essential in order to minimise the risks associated with developing a project in which autoclaves form a key part of the operation. This paper identifies the approaches that have been taken in the piloting of oxidative and pressure acid leach operations. Particular emphasis is placed on the determination of scale-up ratios between the pilot and commercial plants and the pilot-plant run durations. The issues, both metallurgical and project-specific, that can impact these key parameters are reviewed.

The Broken Hill (BH) Block contains a wide variety of mineralization, with comrodities including Pb, Ag, Zn, W, Cu, Co and Sn. Much of the mineralization is stratigraphically controlled. Fe, Cu and Co-rich mineralization is dcminant in the Thackaringa Group; Pb, Ag, Zn and W is dcminant in the BH Group and Sn mineralization is present above the BH Group. Some mineralization occurs as concordant syngenetic deposits, but other types have been partly or completely remobilized by metamorphism, magmatic activity or hydrothermal fluids. Almost all of the non-syngenetic mineralization, including stratabound, vein and intrusive-related types, has formed from the "recycling" (remobilization and redeposition) of metals originally deposited with the sediments and volcanics of the Willyama Supergroup.

Alteration and mineralisation at the Island Copper deposit is related to the intrusion of Early Jurassic quartz feldspar porphyry dykes into surrounding comagmatic Bonanza volcanic rocks. The pyrophyllite alteration zone forms an upward flaring cone, largely hosted within a breccia body that c ross-cuts the Cu, Mo, and Au-rich ore shell. This alteration zone contains pyrophyllite, dumortierite and diaspore and resembles alteration occurring in some high-sulfidation deposits, but which is barren. Fluid mineral equilibria and fluid inclusion studies indicate formation at approximately 300 ¦C from fluids dominated by steam and gases. These fluids appear highly acidic, but sulfur poor, leading to extreme base leaching within the breccia body and surrounding rocks.
