Performance trials followed the commissioning of three large mine fans at Mount Isa in 1965. Actual performance characteristics were determined. These were in good agreement with predicted performance. Piezometer rings for volume flow and pressure measurement were calibrated, and the performance of some aerodynamic components of the installation was studied.Test equipment, preparation, and conditions are described.

Queensland Mines Limited operates a small uranium treatment plant at Nabarlek in the Arnhem Land Aboriginal Reserve, some 265 km due east of Darwin. It was the wish of the local Aboriginal people that the ore be treated over an eight year period and that no township be constructed in Arnhem Land. Due to these wish- es it was decided to house employees and their families in Darwin and fly the employees to the minesite for work rosters. A singleman's style camp only was constructed at Nabarlek. To satisfy the Aboriginal people's wishes all recreation time is spent offsite thus lead- ing to a roster system whereby employees spend three distinct periods of 6, 6 and 4 days on- site, broken by recreation periods of 3, 4 and 5 days in Darwin, during each 28 day period. Employees are divided into four opposing rosters, which allows at any given time for approximately half the workforce to be onsite and the other half on rest and recreation leave in Darwin. This method of staffing has generally proved to be most satisfactory although at times problems arise, in terms of both product- ion and social effect not normally encountered when operating within more conventional circum- Stances.

As a part of the Newcrest, Telfer Expansion Project, a consortium of Australian, Canadian and South African Mining Contractors in joint venture have been contracted to develop the hoisting shaft. The parties namely; Byrnecut Mining Pty Ltd, Murray and Roberts RUC and Thyssen Mining Construction of Canada Ltd have combined their individual expertise to excavate the shaft. There is a particular emphasis on the use of proven shaft sinking techniques from North America and in particular integrating electric hydraulic drilling equipment and personnel from the Canadian Mining industry. The Telfer hoist shaft when completed will have a finished diameter of 7.1 metres and extend to a depth of 1170 metres below the collar. The shaft will be fully concrete lined and will later be equipped for hoisting ore from the Telfer deeps at a rate of five million tonnes per annum. The shaft when completed will be the largest shaft ever completed in Australia on a volumetric basis. This paper will examine the technical aspects of the shaft sink, as well as exploring the integration of personnel and equipment from the frozen prairies of Saskatchewan, Canada into an operation in the Great Sandy Desert of Western Australia. Pulverised coal firing was pioneered in the cement industry prior to the turn of the century. Ash from the coal is absorbed into the mix in the kiln and replaces secondary materials. With high purity limestone coal with high ash content can be used. Fuel cost is a major part of the total manufacturing cost. Cement plants are thus quick to respond to fuel price changes and will use low grade fuels if there is a price advantage. Combustion conditions in a cement kiln differ markedly from a boiler. Flame length is determined by air/fuel mixing but because of fixed secondary air conditions this depends on primary air momentum. Volatile content has some effect on flame length but this can be offset by coal fineness. Much of the heat for cement production is for limestone calcination which is a low grade energy requirement. By allowing long residence time in separate direct fired vessels which then feed the high temperature kiln the energy of materials such as oil shale, tyres and lump lignite can be utilised.

A Train Performance Calculator (TPC) is an essential tool in railway operations, as a means of acquiring quickly a precise measure of the performance of the system. Traditionally the TPC was used in the form of program for a large computer. By employing an efficient integration algorithm and tailoring the program to suit the computer system it is shown that it is possible to devise a TPC for a mini computer. The resulting low running costs and flexibility of operation makes this a useful design tool. This TPC was developed to study problems associated with a single track railway operation. It was applied specifically to study the railway operated by the Mt. Newman Mining Co. Limited in the Pilbara region of W.A. to transport iron ore from the mine to the port. The TPC was used to calculate the effects of changes to locomotive power, to train size, to the track and to the amount of traffic. Its accuracy was checked by comparing its performance with that of the actual trains.

A review of the literature indicated that several studies have been reported on the dissolution of gold using iodide/iodine, bromide/bromine leaching systems. Although the reagent costs are much cheaper for chloride/chlorine (or hypochlorite) this system has not been fully evaluated. This study was conducted to evaluate the fundamental chemistry of the chloride/hypochlorite leaching system. The CHEMIX program was used to model the stability of various gold species existing in the solution. The gold dissolution rate at different conditions was determined using gold strips immersed in various mixtures of chloride/hypochlorite. Leaching experiments were conducted to test the extraction of gold from various ores (oxidised and copper-gold ores), showing a promising prospect for this technique in various applications.

Improvements in technology do not necessarily lead to higher profits: the benefit of lower costs can be captured by coal buyers, governments and workforce rather than by the colliery operators. The economic impact of longwall mining in Australia has been critically assessed to provide lessons for the future. For a variety of reasons, companies investing in longwall equipment in the past five years have generally not achieved an adequate return on the funds invested. The effect of technological innovation must be examined in the light of competitive forces operating in the market. Projections of cost reduction trends in the coal industry have been applied to a world cost model to provide a picture of the coal industry in the year 2000.

This address was delivered at the Annual Conference Presidential Dinner held in Sydney on 11 July 1988.The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy brings together, voluntarily, people with a professional interest in the disciplines and skills which are employed in the mineral industry, and in relation to that industry.We come together because we have a mutual interest in improving what is done by the mineral industry, in all its aspects. It is this sense of continuing improvement, of doing better, of doing as well as we can, as our knowledge and skills improve, that unites us in creating and fostering a professional association of likeminded people.We know from our professional training and experience that enormous progress has been made, at an ever-increasing rate, in the mineral industry, particularly this century. We know that the mineral industry has played a very major role in providing the means by which so many more people survive to live longer, healthier ,and more interesting lives, than ever before. Indeed, together with the oil and gas industry, which is an integral part of the mineral industry but has achieved its own commercial distinction, it is fair to claim that the mineral industry has played the major role in providing the means for the advancement of the human, quality of life.We do not need to make any great claims on human society in consequence of our statement of these contributions. The facts, for those who are aware of them, speak for themselves. Our more modest interest, as members of our professional association, is to look to the future, while conscious of our heritage as a guide to what more might be done, in that future.We certainly do not claim that this indisputable contribution made to human welfare by the mineral industry gives us some moral position of superiority from which to claim greater support or understanding from the wider community of people.On the other hand we know that as members of the mineral industry we have a responsibility to do what we can to help other people to be aware of, and to understand the significance of, those facts which will only speak for themselves if we take the trouble to make them known. And we have a number of organisations. The Institute itself, The Australian Mining Industry Council, the various State Chambers of Mines, the industrial relations body, The Australian Mines and Metals Association, and others, each of which in its own way endeavours to add strength to the individual efforts which we each should make.We may look at these facts about our mineral industry as simple dry statistics, even with their undoubtedly improving trends, or we can see them, and portray them to others, as expressing something which is much more. We can portray them as expressing the outcomes of our professional determination to strive to do better, whatever it i,s we find ourselves doing in this mineralindustry.We may seek to describe our efforts as being in pursuit of excellence, or by other such high-sounding phrases, but I prefer to describe those efforts as simply our strivings to make everything we do better next time-much as the dedicated golfer tries to do, but with, may I suggest, more evident success achieved in the mineral industry; which is one reason why I don't try to play golf.May I suggest to you that trying to do better, is very simply the true basis of professionalism? We are trained and practised to see the opportunity for improvement-not to be static in a world which we know is changing so rapidly in every aspect around us. We must be dynamic, which means optimistic, about improving the world in which we find ourselves.

With the aim of producing a concentrate with silica content lower than 1.0 per cent SiO2, laboratory experiments were conducted using a sample of the final concentrate from the Samarco iron ore flotation plant (mechanical cells circuit). The sample contained 3.08 per cent SiO2. This sample was split in two size ranges: >105 ¦m and 2. The >105 ¦m fraction, representing 23.3 per cent of the initial mass, was re-ground to 100 per cent 2 content were obtained. Considering the mass proportions of the two size fractions, the calculated silica content of the combined concentrate was 0.68 per cent, which is considered satisfactory for the objective of this investigation. The major reasons for the higher (0.90 per cent) silica content of the concentrate from the coarse fraction are the presence of silicon in the lattice of goethite and the presence of residual silicious slimes in the pores of porous hematite.

During conventional eddy current separation, a repulsive force is applied to metallic particles by placing them in a rapidly changing magnetic field generated by a spinning magnetic rotor carrying an arrangement of alternate magnetic poles. This method works effectively for larger non-ferrous metallic objects, such as aluminium cans, but as the metallic particles become smaller, the bulk repulsive force on the particles is increasingly replaced by a rotational torque. Therefore, for small metallic particles it makes sense to use particle rotation, rather than particle repulsion, to effect a separation. Eddy current separators using particle rotation are similar in construction to present separators, but are designed to produce a rotating field of essentially constant angular velocity and field strength. Practical and economic particle rotation eddy current separations are possible down to particle sizes of about 200 ¦m, but separations, at probably uneconomic rates, can be carried out on particles as small as 50 ¦m.

A major high grade zinc deposit, Dugald River has fine-grained and complex mineral associations which provide considerable metallurgical challenges for both mineral dressers and downstream processors. A long history of metallurgical testing focusing on mineralogy and flotation concentrate production has shown that while separate lead and zinc concentrates can be produced at saleable grades, high levels of iron, and particularly manganese, are likely to place constraints on the marketing of zinc concentrate produced from deeper zones where coincidentally lode development is at its maximum. Testwork has focused on characterising the flotation response of ore types ranging from banded and stringer sulphides to brecciated ores in a variety of sulphide matrices. A high level of variability with lower than expected metal recoveries has been indicated across some of the higher grade brecciated ores. However, the dominant slatey breccia has generally provided the best results. Heavy media preconcentration testwork has been moderately encouraging and at this stage, although value adding downstream of concentrate production on-site is not seen as an economic option processing developments are being monitored on a broad front. Providing satisfactory means can be developed for handling manganese during downstream processing of the concentrate, it is not difficult to see a world-class operation emerging from the resource in the medium-term Future.

Commencing early in 1975, Saraji Mine in Central Queensland will product 3.56 million tonnes in the first year and then 4.57 million tonnes annually for the Japanese and European markets. The coal will be mined from a series of pits separated by corridors which will be mined at a later date. Through the corridors flow regional drainage structures and power lines. Relatively easy areas will be mined initially to assist the cash flow and to minimise start-up difficulties. For ease of scheduling it is desirable that pit lengths exceed 3 000m but this will not always be possible. Ramps were designed using 1 200m spacing and 5 per cent gradient as optimum but modified to suit specific conditions. One ramp will be in the end of each pit nearest the ROM hopper and stripping will commence from this end. The advantages so gained are shorter haul distances, immediate access to the coal after stripping and simplification of the excavation of the first ramp. Haul road location was defined by the minimum present value of construction plus operating costs. Bivariate recoverable resource estimation aims at predicting the recovered metal for a secondary variable when a cut-off is applied to a primary variable. The choice of a consistent geostatistical model is advisable to allow a robust estimation from exploration data of the primary and secondary metal recovery functions on a generic selection block (selective mining unit û SMU) within large panels. Ore processing decisions at Lihir Gold LimitedÆs Lihir Gold Mine are based on the gold and sulfur estimates of SMUs from production (grade control) data. The predictive model from exploration data at Lihir is based on the estimation of a recoverable resource for gold by Uniform Conditioning (UC), with an estimate of the sulfur grade being provided by Ordinary Kriging of panels. While univariate UC is adapted to the diffusive nature of the gold mineralisation (Ladolam orebody) at Lihir, the independent estimation of sulfur, through ordinary kriging, fails to capture the potential spatial correlation that exists between gold and sulfur mineralisation. This paper presents a practical implementation of bivariate UC, which better represents in the resource model the spatial correlation between gold and sulfur. Incremental economic gains through improved definition of material categories and scheduling are investigated, and the particular impact on the process of geological interpretation and domaining is emphasised.

Examination of the geology and support performance at two site leads to development of an under tanding of the influence of caving on powered support rating. The two site represent the current extremes in support rating, i.e. 6/260 tonne supports operating in the Hirst seam at Solsgirth Colliery, Scotland, and 4/900 tonne supports operating in the Bulli seam, West Cliff Colliery, Australia.A conceptual model considers the coal ahead of the face, the powered support, and the caved waste to be three yielding foundations which interact to control the subsidence of the roof strata.The caving mechanisms identified for the strata of the Hirst and Bulli seams, are different. These mechanisms being related to rock properties - the palaegeography and depositional conditions at each site-produce caved wastes with different yield characteristics.An analysis of the results obtained for convergence and support reaction during production cycles at both sites shows the manner in which support reaction is developed, indicating the importance of higher setting load densities in the Bulli seam.Evaluation of the work done on the subsiding roof strata during typical production cycles by two of the yielding foundations the powered support and the caved waste immediately behind the powered support - further demonstrates the influence of caving mechanisms on support rating.

This paper investigates dry drilling as a feasible alternative to meet current requirements for improvements in mining productivity in an increasingly competitive world.A field test program was conducted in the surface facilities of a hard rock mine in Sudbury, Canada, to investigate the potential use of dry drilling in underground bulk mining as a conceivably faster and more economical method than wet drilling. The test work consisted of the monitoring of advance rates and bit life while a series of 165 mm diameter holes, wet and dry, were drilled with compressed air at both mine (0.69 MPa) and high (1.72 MPa) pressure levels. The results indicate that penetration rates can be increased by approximately 24 per cent by drilling dry with high air pressure and by approximately 27 per cent by drilling dry with mine air as compared with wet drilling under the same conditions. Dry drilling also has the effect of increasing bit life by up to 69 per cent. An economic analysis for typical hard rock mines indicated that drilling productivity and cost savings can be increased by approximately 23 per cent when dry drilling is utilised.The testing program indicates that dry drilling has the potential to become a feasible technique with regard to performance, productivity and costs.

MARTIN) IN PRESENTING THE CERTIFICATE TO SIR MAURICE MAWBY, C.B.E.Members of The Institute, distinguished guests of which there are many, ladies and gentlemen, you are welcome. And might I add a special welcome to Lady Mawby and Lady Fisher and to Sir George's only son, Peter, who with his wife, Betty and one of Sir George's three daughters, Helen, are present this evening, and also to Sir Maurice's son, Colin, and Colin's wife, Jay, also in our company.The family presence must surely be a great source of pleasure and satisfaction to all those so intimately concerned.It is hardly necessary for me to state the sole and only reason for our presence here tonight, which is to confer on Sir George Fisher and Sir Maurice Mawby Honorary Membership of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and at the same time to acknowledge two people who have rendered great service to the mining industry, albeit tinged with sadness to all of us in the knowledge that from now on their influence may diminish. It is now my pleasure to introduce, although that is hardly necessary, Sir Maurice Mawby, the second member of the duo we honour here this evening, and whose contribution to the mining industry is also beyond assessment.
