The heavy medium cyclone plant for the preconcentration of silver-lead-zinc ore prior to grinding and flotation was commissioned in August 1982. This paper details the measures taken to get the plant up to design performance which involved modifications to the medium densifying and slimes clarifying sections. Operating experiences to date are described with emphasis on the low medium consumption recorded and severe wear on process equipment.

Compacted tablets of hematite ore (containing clay and quartz gangue) and limestone were heated in air in an ULVAC-RIKO rapid heating furnace to maximum temperatures in the range 1200-1350°C.The resulting sintered products were examined in terms of mineralogy, texture, strength and reducibility. The sintered tablets are a good analogue of normal plant sinters. These investigations have shown that sinters of optimum reducibility are produced in the narrow temperature range 1250-l275°C. Conditions for the production of such highly reducible sinters under plant conditions are discussed.

In a typical open cast mining operation, investigation of how existing truck performance compares with the highest achievable truck performance is largely neglected. This paper addresses this issue by proposing a computerised system that will provide a systematic method for comparing existing truck operational performance to the highest performance considered achievable. Through analyses of existing versus achievable performances, various inefficiencies associated with truck operations can be identified. These inefficiencies could occur due to machine configurations, haul route design and conditions or operator skill level. Remedial action should then be taken in a timely fashion to better manage these factors and to ensure the fleet is always operating at its peak efficiency.

The Cattlegrid copper orebody is a concealed thin, tabular sheet localised near an unconformity between two sub- horizontal Precambrian sandstone units. It extends over an area of 1,000 m by 500 m within a wider area of mineral- isation. The ore consists of complex sulphides and is neither massive nor disseminated. It consists mainly of irregular fillings in pore space developed between clasts in sandstone breccias, in fault zones and joints and along stratification planes. Its habit is unique amongst Australian base metal ore bodies. During the pre-development period ore was outlined by percussion holes but in studies leading to investment decisions ore reserves were manually calculated from intercepts and assay results of cores from diamond drill holes. The methods used for estimating reserves in the pre-production and production periods are described and evaluated by comparing mine production during the first five ore production years with the forecasts made.

Alumina reduction in Rajhara iron ore slimes essentially involves separation of hematite from gibbsite in relatively coarser fraction and from kaolinite in the finer fraction. Selective dispersion flocculation studies on synthetic mixtures clearly indicated that while it was possible to achieve almost perfect separation of hematite from kaolinite using starch and PAMX (modified polyacrylamide containing hydroxamate functional groups) flocculants, no selectivity was observed in iron oxide-alumina system. A schematic flowsheet suggested on the basis of this work for the beneficiation of Indian ore slimes thus consists of classification in a hydrocyclone, followed by selective dispersion of coarse fraction (underflow) and selective flocculation of the overflow fraction. Starting with a feed assaying 46 per cent Fe and 11.6 per cent A1203, a concentrate assaying 60 per cent Fe and 4.7 per cent A1203 could be produced at an overall iron recovery of 60 per cent using conventional Reagents.

The report by Baker (1958, p. 27) of krennerite in contact with gold in a specimen from the 2500 ft level, Phantom South lode, Great Boulder mine, Kalgoorlie, led the writer to look into this further, since Cabri (1965) reported that the assemblage krennerite-gold was unstable between 238° and 356° C, and possibly down to room temperature.Dr. G. Baker very generously provided the writer with two chips from the same rock specimen (No. 14 as labelled from the mine) in which the krennerite gold assemblage was reported to occur. These were examined by polished section and x-ray diffraction techniques and returned to the classified collection of the Mineragraphic Investigations Section of CSIRO.One specimen, showing visible gold, was examined optically with a binocular microscope and telluride material was twice removed from contact with the gold for x-ray diffraction. Drilling has been accepted as a major exploration tool. However its use in mine planning and development has been overlooked.This need for drillhole data was highlighted during the redevelopment boom of the central Victorian gold mines. During the 1980's numerous old mines were evaluated and successfully drilled to yield mineable parcels of quartz reefs close to existing workings.Invariably the initial decision was always to attempt reopening and rehabilitating existing access. The four case studies described have proceededsufficiently to show that major cost savings would have been made if underground drilling had been used as the main tool in mine planning.Savings not only in expenditure, but in the time required to make key decisions. In two cases the mines would have experienced far earlier expansions in production. In one case the mine would be currently producing rather than awaiting further finance. In the fourth example, the decision to case development would have been much earlier providing capital to other projects.

The Charters Towers goldfield is located in the centre of a Lower to Mid-Palaeozoic igneous complex where schistose, amphibolite-grade metamorphic rocks were intruded by multiple phases of medium grained granodioritic rocks. Several generations of mafic and felsic dykes also occur. Two distinct mylonites cut all but the youngest granitoids. Gold mineralisation occurs in quartz veins located in brittley reactivated mylonite and in sympathetic fissures in the undeformed granitoids. The gold-quartz veins occur in complex, gouge-filled, 2.5m thick zones, with minor sulfides, surrounded by zoned phyllic and propylitic alteration assemblages. Four main vein systems are each restricted to separate granitoids or contain oreshoots near granitoid contacts. No genetic relationship between the granitoids and the vein systems can be documented. The early mylonitic fabrics and the granitoid contacts played an important role in ground preparation and in the localization of oreshoots. Non mylonitized granitoids also served as favourable hosts for many of the lodes. Whole rock values of 180 of the granitoids range between 6.5 and 7.9 per mil. Hydrothermal vein quartzes have 180 values between 12.2 and 15.7 per mil. Mylonite quartzes have values of 8.4 per mil. Variation in 180 values of quartzes is in part related to granitoid host rock type.

Mispah form (FAO: Lithosol) soil contaminated with >380 000 mg kg-1 creosote was co-composted with sewage sludge and poultry manure for a period of 19 months. The soil was mixed in a ratio of 1:1 (v/v) with wood chips to improve aeration. The soil-wood chips mixture was then mixed in a ratio of four soil-wood chips mixture: one compost material (sewage sludge or poultry manure). Compost heaps were set up in triplicate on wood palettes overlaid with double layers of nylon straw bags. Control experiments, which contained the contaminated soil-wood chips mixture without sewage sludge or poultry manure were set up in triplicate. Moisture, temperature, pH, ash content, C:N ratio of the compost and the creosote concentration of the soil was monitored monthly. The concentration of selected creosote components in the soil was also determined at the end of the incubation period. Temperature was observed to rise to about 60¦C in the poultry manure and about 58¦C in the sewage sludge within two months of incubation, while temperature in the control fluctuated between 15¦C and 35¦C throughout the incubation period. Creosote concentration in the control was reduced by 17 per cent at the end of the incubation period while concentration of creosote in the sewage sludge and poultry manure compost was reduced by about 99 per cent. The percentage rate of creosote reduction in the poultry manure compost was initially lower than observed in the sewage sludge compost. However, the reduction rate became similar towards the end of the treatment period. The concentrations of selected creosote components were reduced by about 100 per cent within the same period. Respiration of compost microorganisms and counts of microbial populations showed that microbial activity correlated with reduction in creosote concentration.

It is well known that some sinkholes or subsidence take place from time to time in the areas where abandoned room and pillar type mines exist. The authors have been involved with the stability of abandoned mines beneath urbanized residential areas in Tokai region and there is a great concern about the stability of these abandoned mines during large earthquakes as well as in long term. The 2003 Miyagi Hokubu and 2011 Great East Japan earthquakes caused great damage to abandoned mines and resulted in many collapses. Particularly the effect of the quality of backfilling of abandoned mine below the urbanized areas is very important under static and dynamic conditions. The authors present the effect of the quality of backfilling on the ground subsidence associated with abandoned lignite mines under static and dynamic conditions and discuss its implications on the urbanized areas above abandoned lignite mines in this study. I lamata is within the Morobe Goldfield (7¦ 25' S, 146¦ 39' E) on the Wau (SB 55-14),1:250,000 scale map sheet (Fig 1). The deposit is 13 km SW of Wau, within the headwaters of the Upper Watut River, at an average elevation of 2000 m. The steep mountainous terrain is covered by dense tropical rainforest and access is by helicopter or by foot track. The deposit has been described previously by Wells and Young (1991) and 1)enwer. Leach and Mowat (1995). Data collected to late 1996 have been used to estimate an Inferred Resource of 9.2 Mt at 3.1 g/t gold using a cutoff of 0.5 g/t. This contains a high grade portion for which an Inferred Resource of 1.2 Mt at 9.7 grt gold has been estimated using a 5.0 g/t cutoff.

The Australian Broken Hill Consols Mine, situated some 600 yd east of the main Broken Hill line of lode, is noted for its rich ores of silver. In contrast to the vast conformable orebodies of the Broken Hill field, the Consols lode occupies a narrow fissure dipping to the south west at angles increasing from 240 through to vertical and transgressing the strike of the metamorphosed country rock at an oblique angle. This feature, together with the abundance of calcite and siderite and the virtual absence of silicate minerals in the gangue, has led to its classification as an orebody of the Thackeringa type (King, 1953). Recorded production during the period 1890 to 1903 is given as 845,000 oz of silver and 20 tons of lead.The unusually rich silver values of the Consols lode were concentrated at the intersection of the fissure with beds of amphibolite, whereas in the adjacent schists and gneisses the lode became markedly impoverished. From the surface to a depth of some 120 ft extensive surface oxidation had occurred, resulting in the breakdown of siderite and its replacement by limonite and associated manganese oxides.Silver halides, dyscrasite, acanthite and partly oxidised tetrahedrite were the main silver minerals in this zone. With increasing depth the lode material gradually reverted to minerals representative of the hypogene zone.The only previous work specifically on the mineralogy of the Consols lode is that by Smith (1922), one time manager of the mine. The Lachlan Fold Belt (LFB) is a complex orogenic belt which developed in Early to Mid Palaeozoic time. A number of orogenies and more localised deformational events affected the region. A simplified classification scheme for the diverse gold deposit types is proposed, subdividing primary mineralizing processes into four categories: volcanism (epithermal and volcanogenic deposits), igneous intrusion (subvolcanic/porphyry style, skarn and magmatic deposits), metahydrothermal processes (deposits generated during metamorphism and regional deformation) and hydrothermal-distal processes (deposits generated by poorly understood, generally remote large scale hydrothermal processes). Major gold deposit associations include epithermal and porphyry style deposits in Ordovician-Early Silurian shoshonitic andesite sequences; volcanogenic base metal-gold deposits in Silurian rift or basin felsic sequences; vein deposits in Late Silurian and Early Devonian S and I-type granitoids; deposits in Early Devonian sedimentary rocks of the Cobar Basin probably generated by metahydrothermal processes during basin closure and cleavage formation; deposits associated with serpentinite; and metahydrothermal quartz vein deposits in folded sedimentary rocks.Studies of host rock geochemistry suggest a relationship between magma types, gold enrichment and mineralization particularly in shoshonitic sequences and Early Devonian granitoids of the Boggy Plain Supersuite. Structural studies indicate the importance of thrust type structures and detachment faults in generation and location of gold mineralization. Lead isotope initial ratios help define metallogenic associations and a number of distinctive isotope "signatures" have been established.

The Kidston orebody is a kilometre diameter breccia pipe of Permo-Carboniferous age' assoc- iated with rhyolitic dykes and hosted by Proterozoic granodiorite and metamorphic rocks. Mineralization and alteration are associated spatially and temporally with brecciation and rhyolite intrusion. Three stages of alteration have been recognized: pre-brecciation, and early and late stage post-brecciation. Gold is known to be particularly associated with late stage post-brecciation cavity infill and sheeted veins. Fluid inclusion and stable isotope results show the importance of moderate-high temperat- ure, saline, magmatic fluids in the early stage mineralization and in the brecciation of the pipe. Later periods of alteration, accompanied by gold deposition, are associated with fluids only slightly depleted in 180 relative to mag- matic waters, unlike the strongly 180-depleted meteoric water typically found in hydrothermal Permian and Carboniferous deposits of eastern Australia. The 5180 values and low salinities in fluid inclusions suggest the fluid may have formed from vapour condensation from a magmatic fluid. Fluid inclusion data and alteration assemblages define the prevailing chemical conditions. Gold transport under these, conditions would have been primarily as a bisulfide complex.

Suppliers of products and services have a pivotal role in sustainable development in the mining and minerals industry. Reputable suppliers know their products and services, and the industry, and have unique knowledge of these in relation to their customerÆs needs. Petroleum hydrocarbon suppliers, in particular, impact upon a mineÆs sustainability because of the extensive reach of petroleum hydrocarbons into the mining and minerals life-cycle. The petroleum hydrocarbon life-cycle is a useful framework to enable engagement between supplier and customer on the issue of sustainability. The life-cycle starts with supply of fuels, lubricants and services at the mine, through to plant operation and maintenance, transport of mined products, ship loading, and finally through to mineral processing and other downstream value-adding. There are barriers to leveraging supplierÆs capabilities which have to be overcome before the industry will gain the potential benefits from such supplier engagement.

The Boddington Gold Mine, operated by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd, is located about 100 km south of Perth and is one of the largest-producing gold mines in Australia.Multiple open pits are planned and several extend below the water table, through the deeply weathered lateritic profile and into the underlying Archean bedrock. Groundwater related mining problems, such as poor trafficability, wet floor conditions and slope instability began to occur early in 1990.The mine is located within Archean greenstones which are steeply dipping and faulted. Rock types include mafic to felsic volcanics, pyroclastics and sediments. These rocks have been regionally deformed and metamorphosed and are intruded by quartz micro-diorites and post-mineralisation dolerite dykes. Deep weathering has produced a typical oxide profile consisting of laterite, clay and saprolite zones underlain by weathered to fresh bedrock.

As mining progressed through the Girilambone oxide orebodies, down to the primary sulphide zones, each successive stratiform layer yielded copper bearing ores of changing mineralogy and grade. Constant changes, innovations and optimisation were required to be applied to the heap leach, solvent extraction and electrowinning operations, to efficiently produce LME Grade A quality copper cathodes from this ore. The changing ore types required various crushing, stacking and heap leach irrigation methods to ensure that optimum recovery from the predominantly low-grade copper ores was efficiently achieved. Subsequently, innovations such as heap aeration and heap rejuvenation techniques were implemented. The constant selective removal of copper from the maturing heap leach liquors, coupled with an increase in iron(III) concentration, required solvent extraction optimisation. Changes to the original solvent extraction circuit configuration, combined with changes in operating parameters and procedures, allowed effective processing with changing heap liquor compositions. The electrowinning tankhouse was also upgraded and optimised through continued testwork and monitoring, to maximise cathode production and quality

Based on the author's research and plant practice experience of the last decade, several technological approaches have been developed to increase the recovery of gold and silver associated with sulphides. This paper gives a general discussion of some technological problems encountered in this area in five aspects and introduces the different approaches employed in three typical mineral processing plants to increase recovery of associated gold and silver. On the basis of studying occurrence characteristics of gold and silver minerals in sulphide ores and of determining loss locations of gold and silver on flotation process, a remarkable improvement on the recovery of gold and silver in all these three plants was made by choosing proper grinding fineness, using combined collectors of good selectivity, properly decreasing the grade of main metal concentrates, making reasonable arrangement of the products of main metals, or a combination thereof.
