Safety is paramount in the underground mining environment. The mining industry has for many years focused on injury prevention in the workplace through procedures and training. In the area of control of major accident events that could result in single or multiple fatalities, and serious injuries, the mining industry approach has concentrated mainly on past experiences and lessons learnt. However, in the last 20 years, other high hazard industries, such as the chemical process industry and oil and gas industry have developed the Safety Case approach, using systems safety techniques and risk assessment as a means of identification and control of major accident events. The Safety Case approach is now being introduced into Australian underground mining. This paper describes the Safety Case approach and how this can be adapted to underground mining. This is a holistic approach and assists in ranking significant risk contributors and prioritising risk management efforts. The discussion includes how the Safety Management System interfaces with the Formal Safety Assessment in effectively controlling the hazards. It provides examples from actual case studies conducted by KBR, and suggests ways forward for the industry.

A group of stratabound-stratiform Fe-Ba-Zn-Pb-Ag deposits within the La Minita mining district of Michoacan, southwest Mexico have been investigated. The results of the study show that these deposits were generated around submarine hot-springs issuing in a Cretaceous island-arc environment. The exhalative mineralization, which is both epigenetic and syngenetic in character, was developed above fault-systems which constituted the loci of both volcanism and subsequent hydrothermal systems.Fluid inclusion data suggest two hydrothermal events during ore mineralization, one at 240¦C and the other at 161 to 205¦C, with salinities between 2.1 and 12.8 wt.% NaCl equivalent. Stable isotope data support a marine origin for the ore-fluids, as well as, for carbon and sulfur. Strontium isotope data suggest that Sr in the barites was extracted from the volcanics and limestones by circulating seawater. The ore-depositional environment was one of shallow, sub-tropical marine character, where mineralization was in part geochemically controlled by carbonate reefal facies within the volcanic/pyroclastic suite.

The capital cost of major items of mining equipment is very high. The operating cost of such equipment is also high. It is therefore important that such expensive equipment is used productively. To this end mine management uses production data systems and management accounting systems to monitor events and provide data for analysis to enable management to make operating and business optimisation decisions. This could be done better if there was an understanding of productivity in terms of its utilisation and efficiency components. What has been missing has been a methodology to properly account for the productivity of equipment in terms of its contribution in dollars to the costs and profit of the mine. An explanation of the Productivity Accounting methodology will be given. It will then be shown that productivity has two components, that of capacity utilisation and efficiency. These are defined and the dollar contribution of each to costs and profit shown. The efficiency component tracks the effect of proportional changes in input cost quantities used in the mining process as mining production changes. The capacity utilisation component tracks the effect of step changes in the input cost quantities used in the mining process as mining production changes.

The VERT project 1993 - 1998 laid the technical foundation for curtailing the emission of fine particles from diesel engines at Swiss underground workplaces. The targeted maximum was 100 ¦g/m3 EC. Extensive laboratory and field investigations demonstrated that this specification is only attainable with modern diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems that almost eliminate particles in the entire lung penetrating size range from 20 nm to 2.5 ¦m. In January 2000, Switzerland mandated compulsory particle filters in underground workplaces, particularly in tunnelling, irrespective of engine age, size and type. After the implementation, the particle concentration in the respiratory air was below 40 ¦g/m3 EC, compared to earlier values of up to 750 ¦g/m3 EC. Deployed DPFs have proven filtration rates of 99 per cent in the entire size range of alveoli intruding particles. The DPFs are as durable as the engine, suffer no ageing and require minimal maintenance. The failure rate is below three per cent annually. Of the 6000 retrofitted construction machines in Switzerland, about 400 are deployed underground. Prerequisites for this quality are a sophisticated certification procedure, electronic monitoring of DPF operation and meticulous periodic exhaust gas inspection of the engines.

This paper examines the importance of examining the relationship between biology and geochemistry when designing a biopile to treat alkaline soils impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons. At a site in Nevada a large, unlined pit was constructed in a loamy sand soil and filled at regular intervals with a mixture of jet fuel, lubricating oils and waste solvents which were set on fire by the local fire department for training purposes. During its period of operation numerous chemicals were also dumped into the pit for disposal purposes, including dichlorobenzene and various chloroethylenes. As a result of these activities a large groundwater contaminant plume was formed. As a part of the site remediation process a decision was made to perform a limited source removal and excavate the top three to four metres of contaminated soil from the burn pit and place it in an engineered biopile. The location of the training pit is in a heavily mineralised basin where the background sulphate level in groundwater exceeds 5000 ppm. Due to naturally occurring biodegradation of the petroleum hydrocarbons a large portion of the sulphate was converted to sulphide which deposited in the soils as marcasite in the anaerobic soils. The initial attempt at soil remediation was to use a forced air treatment scheme that had worked well in small scale laboratory testing. Unfortunately, when attempted in the field on a large scale, marcasite reacted with atmospheric oxygen resulting in internal biopile temperatures exceeding 90¦C resulting in the virtual sterilisation of the soils without remediation occurring. In order to solve this vexing problem Pintail Systems, Inc developed an anaerobic culture that allowed the pile to be operated under anaerobic conditions. Within three months the biopile successfully demonstrated on a large scale significant biodegradation of the refractory petroleum hydrocarbons.

Chemical admixtures are not commonly included in the variety of backfill mixes used in the mining industry. This may be attributed to several reasons including, but not limited to: the perceived high added cost, the lack of awareness about their proper use, and the lack of knowledge about their features and benefits. In the construction industry today, however, chemical admixtures are used in the majority of the concrete produced, enabling concrete to become a more cost-effective building material. They also enable construction crews to meet demands for year-round construction, quicker completion of construction projects, and improved concrete properties. The high demand for chemical admixtures in the construction industry has led to numerous innovations in admixture technology in recent years. Some of these chemical admixtures have been found to enhance the production, transport, placement, and in situ properties of backfill mixes. Others have been found to reduce the cost of such mixes while maintaining, and in some cases improving, their physical properties. In this paper, a few of such innovative admixture technologies are discussed. The benefits, imparted by these technologies to backfill mixes as well as performance data on their use in several backfill applications at various mines, are presented.

Single station group velocities of fundamental made Rayleigh waves over the period range 15-100 s are carguted for five provincial profiles of the West Pacific. Based on recordings of earthquakes around the West Pacific by the W~ (World Wide Standard Seismic Network) stations AFI (Afianalu), HNR (Honiara), WEL (Wellington), PAR (Raratonga) and RAB (Rabaul). The inversion of the derived dispersion curves for average shear velocity-depth structure of the crust, LID and LVL shows that (i) the over-all structure beneath the profile 'westernSamoa-Micronesia-Mariana' is in between that of regions 3 and 4 of Pacific Ocean (Yu and Mitchell, 1979), except that the velocity is slightly lower, (ii) the uppermost mantle beneath the 'Vitiaz Trench' profile between AFI and HNR is similar to that of region 2 of the Pacific - in other words, thin LID and thick LVL; (iii) the structure beneath the ' Ibnga-Keradec Ridge' profile has a thick crust with thick sediments, and LID-LVL velocity and thickness are similar to region 3 of the Pacific; (iv) beneath the profiles ' Tonga/ Kermadec Trench events-RAR station' the structure is intermediate between regions 3 and 4 of the Pacific Crean; (v) from decomposition of the 'Solomon-meriana' profile, the structure beneath the Cntong Java Plateau has a thick crust with thick sediments and the uppermost mantle is similar to that of region 3 of the Pacific clean.

A laboratory-scale fluidised-bed roaster has been used to examine the effect of temperature and duration of roast on the morphology of the calcine produced from a pyritic gold-bearing concentrate. Two mechanisms of oxidation, which depend on the roasting temperature, have been identified. For samples roasted below 550°C, direct oxidation of the sulphide occurred to form hematite with a porous fine-grained concentrically-layered texture. The surface area of the calcine increased with an increase in roasting temperature in the range 400 to 500°C. For samples roasted above 550°C, the first reaction was the evolution of sulphur vapour to produce pyrrhotite, which underwent increasing grain growth as the roasting temperature was increased. This had the effect of decreasing the surface area of the calcine. The pyrrhotite was subsequently oxidised to produce hematite.Leaching studies using cyanide solution indicated that gold extraction around 95 per cent was achieved at temperatures of 500°C and above, with optimum extraction, taking into account rate and cyanide consumption in the range 550 - 700°C. Hence recovery did not decrease with decrease in surface area of the calcine. Observed gold in leached calcines was mainly enclosed in thin oxide walls of the hematite, with minor quantities enclosed in quartz and silicate minerals.

Microorganisms have been used throughout history for the benefit of mankind with some of the earliest applications being in the production of fermented foods and beverages. Reactions involving inorganic substances such as metals, sulphur and sulphide compounds were hardly ever used until the early 1900s when it was discovered that Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was capable of promoting the oxidation of metal sulphides in ores. Today, it is widely recognised that biotechnology has great potential in the minerals industries, particularly in such areas as the leaching of low-grade ores of metals such as copper, gold and uranium; removal of heavy metal ions from process streams and from liquid process wastes; and in the desulphurisation of high-sulphur fuels. Although widespread commercialisation of mineral biotechnology has not yet been achieved, it is estimated that by the Year 2000 mineral biotechnology will have a significant impact on the minerals and metal industry and will probably account for tens of billions of dollars worth of annual production world-wide. This paper examines the actual and possible future applications of biotechnology in the minerals, metal refining and fossil-fuel processing industries. Firstly, the important chemical (and biochemical) principles involved in bio-dissolution of metals from ores and solid wastes, and in bio-accumulation of metals from process and waste solutions are reviewed, including leaching practices - past, present and future. Microbial desulphurisation of coal, and microbially-enhanced oil recovery are also discussed. The practical aspects of genetics and genetic engineering, the types and characteristics of those microorganisms important to mineral biotechnology, and the current research trends are reviewed as well. This paper reviews the developments in understanding of the entrainment mechanism and its modelling in industrial flotation processes over the last 30 years. Both valuable and gangue minerals in the pulp zone of an industrial flotation machine can be transported through the froth zone to the concentrate launder in the water which must also be transferred from the pulp zone to maintain a stable froth zone in conventional flotation. A size dependent portion of each entrained mineral continues in normal circumstances to the concentrate launder. The size dependency arises because the larger particles are able to drain more successfully from the froth region. Gangue minerals are recovered by a number of mechanisms, entrainment being an important one in many cases. The entrainment mechanism is discussed on the basis of the pattern observed in recovery û size data for minerals. Its industrial implications are discussed and means of minimisation of the importance of the mechanism are also discussed. Various means proposed for mathematical modelling of the entrainment mechanism are also described. The effect of process variables on key parameters in these models is reviewed. Properties of both the pulp and froth zones are discussed where needed and means of taking additional measurements with devices developed over the last ten years are discussed as part of the collection of more detailed data on the flotation process in general and the entrainment mechanism in particular.

The process of refurbishment is not a precisely defined one. It is under- stood to mean an upgrading of a plant which is normally performed only once. The application of refurbishment in the field of materials hand- ling equipment poses particular problems because complex plants con- sist of individual components having quite different remaining service lives. For this reason, a systematic, proven procedure is proposed for the refurbishment of large materials handling equipment, designed to ensure economic implementation in accordance with the company goals. Rheinbraun2 has been using materials handling equipment since 1900, the largest units today being bucket-wheel excavators with a daily capacity of 240,000 bank cubic metres of overburden and a service weight of up to 13,500 t (metric tons). Since 1975, more than 50 large-scale refurbish- ment projects have been carried out in the company. In the process, refur- bishment has turned out to be the proven alternative to replacement of large materials handling equipment. Rheinbraun Engineering,3 a Rhein- braun subsidiary, carries out planning, consulting, and supervising work in the implementation of refurbishment projects in Germany and abroad. The most recent example is the refurbishment of Dredger 11 of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria in cooperation with Krupp-Australia, Melbourne.

The Mount Leyshon breccia complex is located on an east-west trending contact between Cambrian metasediments (Puddler Creek Formation) and the Ordovician Mt. Leyshon granite, within the Lolworth-Ravenswood block. Detailed mapping of basement, breccia and igneous unit geometries, crosscutting relationships and resolution of complex chronological relation- ships indicates that the Mt. Leyshon breccia complex should be reinterpreted as a number of intrusive igneous and breccia phases. This is in contrast to a previously published account of a largely extrusive geological setting. A complex structural history dominated by strike-slip faulting is preserved within the basement units and is responsible for controlling the location and geometry of the breccia complex. The breccia complex has been divided into brecciated "basement", "main pipe breccia" and an "interactive magma/breccia sequence". Main pipe breccia (the most voluminous unit within the complex) has been re-interpreted as an intrusive breccia, rather than an extrusive or vent fill as previously proposed. This is based on the following evidence: 1. the facies characteristics of the main pipe breccia, 2. the presence of a progression from cohesive basement through to mixed breccia, 3. minor basement block rotation during breccia complex formation, and 4. the partial structural control on the main pipe breccia. No unambiguous evidence exists for pyroclastic facies, although the fine breccia variant commonly contains "accretionary structures", very similar in appearance to those formed during pyroclastic processes. In view of 1. above, they are interpreted to be the product of particle accretion during upward movement of fragmental material, although an origin due to altera- tion cannot be completely discounted. heir occurrence in the main pipe breccia indicates that their presence within a rock unit is not necessarily diagnostic of nvroclastic nroeesses.

Mid-ocean ridges host approximately 65 per cent of about 100 known sites of high-temperature venting and polymetallic sulfide deposits; most of them are located at the East Pacific Rise (EPR), while more diverse mineralisation styles occur at the Mid-Atlantic Rise (MAR). Seafloor hydrothermal activity at the EPR are related to MORB while different substrates, including MORB and ultramafic intrusive rocks, are associated with æblack smokersÆ at the MAR. Depth of hydrothermal activity ranges from 0.7 to 4.3 km. High-temperature vents precipitating Cu-Fe sulfides (chalcopyrite and isocubanite, rare bornite), pyrrhotite, pyrite (¦ marcasite), and sphalerite, and low-temperature edifices precipitating marcasite (with pyrite), sphalerite, barite, andsubordinate chalcopyrite (pyrrhotite and isocubanite are absent) occur in both environments. There are considerable differences in Fe, Zn, Cu, Ag, Au and trace element contents in ores and in theFeS contents in Zn-sulfides in these deposits. Acomparison with anhydrite and sulfide minerals precipitating from modern black smoker fluids sulfide reveals many similarities but also some important differences. Fluids with salinity values above and below that of seawater at 400¦C down to 130 - 170¦C deposited sulfide minerals. Mantle-derived He prevails in fluids trapped by sulfides in EPR 9¦N and 21¦N hydrothermal systems. Hydrothermal fluids in MAR and back-arc systems are richer in radiogenic 4He. The sulfur isotope composition varies in the different hydrothermal fields and within zones of a chimney. EPR sulfides display narrower range of d34S values, while MAR and back-arc sulfides can bedepleted and enriched in the heavier d34S isotope. The most important finding is that fluid temperature, salinity, R/Ra ratios and d34S values ranged more significantly in the polymetallic sulfide deposits than when measured directly on venting fluids. This investigation involves laboratory testing and stability analysis of paste fill at the Golden Giant Mine. Site-cast samples are tested in unconfined, confined, and consolidated-undrained triaxial compression. Pore pressures during shear and consolidation characteristics are measured to determine both drained and undrained shear strength parameters and assess the potential for undrained loading. Liquefaction potential is also considered. A limit equilibrium solution is used to obtain factors of safety against failure of the fill during mining of adjacent stopes.

Currently there is considerable interest in the production of DRI in Western Australia to take advantage of intense interest from the Asian market. Most DRI is produced using gas-based processes and is used as a feedstock in electric arc steel furnaces, otherwise known as mini-mills. This paper critically examines the technical and economic issues of various gas-based DR processes available today and recommends the most effective and attractive processes suitable for Western Australian iron ores.

The results of the washing of coal are often presented by using Partition Curves. By analogy, it is possible to express the results of screening by using similar partition curves. As in the coal washing processes, this method determines the accuracy of screening and is also suitable for different separations depending on the difference in size distribu- tion. This method compares the effectiveness of two screening operations and forecasts the performances.

The economic valuation of mineral prospects usually involves DCF analysis of expected revenues and costs. Traditional approaches deal with price uncertainty by considering different price scenarios and may even consider cases where prices drop sufficiently for production to be suspended temporarily. This paper outlines recent extensions to the methodology derived from finance theory. We present a simple analytical model that focuses on the value of operational flexibility where future prices are uncertain.

The introduction of cement into underground backfilling at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines to improve mining efficiencies gave rise to several major problems, the magnitude of which had not been anticipated. These problems were 1. A loss of recovery in the milling circuit due to the presence of cement 2. The presence of cement-rich slime layers on the surface of the fills 3. The introduction of a safety hazard due to the slippery nature of the surface of cemented fills 4. The deposition of cemented slimes on the levels and in underground sumps and dams. The loss of revenue due to decreased metal recoveries considerably offset the gains from increased stoping efficiencies and the use of cement was substantially reduced while, (a) the Metallurgical. Department attempted to identify the chemical nature of the problem and overcome it, and (b) the Mining Department investigated methods of reducing cement contamination of the ore stream. As a part of this investigation the Mining Department added polymeric flocculants to the cemented fill pulp. Testwork was carried out in the following steps 1. The available Alfloc polymers were screened to determine which was the most effective and what was its optimum dosage rate. 2. This polymer was used in the laboratory to determine the reduction of surface slime, clarity of water, and effects on strength and percolation of fill. 3. Fills were placed underground to substan- tiate the laboratory work. /+. The polymer was then added to all cemented fills going underground to study its effect over a long term. The use of flocculants not only improved the distribution of cement in the body of the fill, but also the distribution of the fines fraction of the filling material, practically eliminated slippery surfaces and improved the clarity of the drainage water. Flocculant is now added to all cemented fills and restrictions on the use of cement are gradually being lifted.

The Argyle Diamond Mine came on stream late in 1985 as the world's largest diamond producer in terms of carat output. The design of the process plant, including the heavy medium separation (HMS) facility which provides the initial stages for separation of diamonds from gangue, evolved over a lengthy period of feasibility study and site investigation into the final form described in this paper. The commissioning was carefully planned and co-ordinated, and culminated successfully with handover of the plant on schedule and within budget. Problems encountered during .within were minimal and since then the plant has achieved greater than design throughput during its first year of operation. Darvr_ontmn

Samples weighing O·25 g are fused with 1 g potassium hydrogen sulphate, leached with 5 ml. of hydrochloric acid, and then diluted with another 5 ml. of acid. After settling, an aliquot of the clear solution is reduced with stannous chloride, and then a zinc dithiol solution is added to form a coloured tungsten complex which is extracted with petroleum spirit for comparison with standards.Concentrations down to 4 p.p.m. may be analysed at a rate of 100 determinations per man-day of 8 hr.
