Sampling systems are never perfect. They all have some bias and give variable sampling errors. The ways of thinking about bias and precision should be different before and after construction (or reconstruction) of a sampling system. Before a sampling system is constructed, the fundamental error variance can be estimated using GyÆs formula or by doing test work on the material to be sampled. The component of sampling variance which varies with the number of sample increments can be computed for the expected patterns of grade variation. The smallness of the bias can be checked using discrete element modelling, by checking that the proposed design complies with clauses in standards, or by copying an existing sampling system that performs well for similar material. After a system has been constructed, sampling precision can and should be monitored directly. Anyone claiming to take responsibility for a sampling system should know its precision. Bias could be checked by comparison to a more accurate sampling system, such as stopped-belt sampling, under conditions where bias seems most likely. However, it is more practical to conduct regular checks that the system is still operating as designed, that the design is still appropriate despite any changes to material flows, and that sample masses are consistent with the correct operation of the sampling system. If precision is not regularly assessed then it should be assumed to be very poor. If a sampling system is not regularly inspected then it should be assumed to be biased.

The commonly used SAB, SABC and run-of-mine (ROM) ball mill circuits can achieve high throughputs with good operating stability. However, these circuits consume a substantial amount of grinding media, which can have a substantial impact on the OPEX and the æcarbon footprintÆ, specifically when viewed as an æembodiedÆ energy input. On the other hand, fully autogenous (AG) circuits can operate at much lower operating costs, but with limited throughput. The control of AG mills, fed by ores with hard and soft components, can also be challenging, due to the sensitivity of the mill to the ratio of hard to soft components.In this paper, a multi-component modelling approach was used to demonstrate that the harder component should be used as grinding media, and its use should be kept to a minimum to avoid reduction in the mill throughput. There is an optimal blend of hard to soft, and any optimal blending condition is both ore-dependent and mill-specific. Establishing this blend is challenging, and consequently discourages the use of autogenous mills. The new modelling approach addresses this challenge by providing a quantitative prediction of the influence of blending soft and hard components in a mill. This prediction can then be used to establish the required blend for maintaining a stable and efficient operation in autogenous grinding mode.CITATION:Bueno, M P and Powell, M S, 2012. Porphyry type mineralization of Lower Cretaceous age in eastern Queensland has been recognized only from the easternmost part of the northern New England Orogen (Day, Murray and Whitaker, 1978), within the northern Yarrol Province (Horton,1982). Recent work about the Mt. Suthers (Pb, Zn, Ag, Cu, Au), Lug-e-nor (Cu, Pb, Zn, Ag, Au, Mo), and German Tully (Cu, Au, Bi) prospects suggest that there has been a phase of porphyry type mineralization within the Gympie Province, of Lower Cretaceous age, overprinting earlier Permo-Triassic phases. About the Mt. Suthers Prospect surface samples of shallow, medium to heavy textured soils derived from marine sedimentary rocks of Permian age, and extrusive and intrusive igneous rocks of intermediate composition and Triassic age, were analysed for Cu, Zn, Pb, Co, Cr, Ni, Fe, V, Mn and Ag. Whereas strong iithological control determined the distribu- tion of Cu (diorite) and of Cr, Ni, Fe and V ,sedimentary rocks), the distribution of Pb, Zn, Ag and of Cu, were determined by mineralization of faults by a cavity fill hydrothermal process. Gold is associated with the Pb, Zn, Ag mineralization. Co and Mn showed distributions independent of lithology and structure. The fault controlled style of mineraliz- ation at Mt. Suthers is repeated at other localities to the south; Calgoa, Marodian, and German Gully. Relative dating of structural features and isotopic dating of nornblende porphyrites (134-135 m.y.) near and related to those mineralized at German c;ully suggest a previously unrecognized phase of porphyry copper style mineralization in south-east Queensland of Lower Cretaceous age (Fig. 1).

"An extensive research program has been undertaken over recent years to reduce the risk of fires and explosions in underground coal mines. The research projects have integrated extensive field studies and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of goaf gas flow behaviour to develop optimum proactive strategies to prevent and control spontaneous combustion and fires ingoaf areas. The research has developed a fundamental understanding of the air and gas flowbehaviour in goaf areas and provided a detailed understanding of the eff ects of various geological,ventilation, operational and inertisation design parameters on goaf gas distribution. The researchinvestigations have also provided a better understanding of the flow behaviour of gases from the heating in the goaf areas and the effect of various gas and spontaneous combustion controltechnologies and strategies. Field studies conducted at a number of underground coal mines have shown that the proactive strategies were successful in reducing oxygen ingress into the goaf areas and in reducing the risk of fires and explosions in the underground coal mines. The results of various research investigations and guidelines for reducing the risk of fires and explosions in underground coal mines are presented in this paper."

The in situ behaviour of claystone floors associated with the Wallarah, Great Northern and Fassifem Seams has been studied using a comprehensive suite of stress and displacement monitors. The instrumentation was supplemented by in situ and laboratory testing of the claystone materials. The instrumentation demonstrated that the presence of claystone floors is associated with floor heave, extra rib spall, and settlement of the pillar into the floor. Horizontal floor extensometers showed that the depth of extrusion of clay was limited to 1-2 in. A pore pressure transducer installed in a claystone floor demonstrated the possible existence of short-term undrained behaviour of the claystone. Long term swelling of destressed claystone was also documented. Settlement of pillars into claystone floors can be analysed using simple elastic theory. The assumption of plane strain is valid for most claystone thickness/pillar width aspect ratios. Floor heave can be analysed using bearing capacity concepts. However, it is considered that heave is the result of local bearing capacity failure in the rib spall zone. The advantage of this model is that the bearing capacity equation can be applied without resort to unrealistically high factors of safety.

This paper introduces a novel roll crusher design, which incorporates non-cylindrical crushing rolls. The use of non-cylindrical rolls enables the crusher to achieve a greater reduction ratio than is possible with conventional roll crushers. Referred to as the NCRC (non-cylindrical roll crusher), the new crusher incorporates two rolls comprised of an alternating arrangement of plane and convex or concave surfaces. The two rolls are complementary and arranged so that when they rotate the convex and concave surfaces of each roll are substantially opposed. With the rolls rotating in opposite directions at the same speed, this arrangement produces a gap between the rolls that remains approximately constant. Discontinuities on the roll surfaces provide improved angles of nip, which increase the probability of larger particles being drawn into the crusher. Initial tests on a scale prototype of the NCRC have indicated that reduction ratios exceeding 10:1 are achievable.

The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a large country of over 1 000 000 square kilometres situated on the Atlantic coast of north-west Africa. It is bounded to the north by Western Sahara and Algeria, to the east by Mali, and to the south by Mali and Senegal. With the exception of a narrow strip in the south along the Senegal River valley, the country lies entirely within the Sahara. The north of the country is largely devoid of vegetation, and it is estimated that 90 per cent of the population of 2.1 million people live in the southern quarter of the country. From about the turn of the century, Mauritania was ruled by the French from Dakar in Senegal and, until 1960 when it obtained independence from the French, Mauritania did not have a capital. Today, the capital is Nouakchott, home to an estimated 600 000 Moors of mixed Arab, Berber and African descent. After independence in 1960, disputes over Spanish Sahara to the north led to a military coup in 1978 and it was not until 1991 that a democratic constitution was adopted. The new constitution declares Mauritania to be an `Islamic, African, and Arab Republic.' It provides for an executive president, elected for a six-year term, and for a bicameral legislature, consisting of a national assembly and a senate. The first presidential and legislative elections were held in 1992 under United Nations' supervision. Mauritania's economy is predominantly pastoral, and the country depends heavily on foreign aid. Its principal export industries are iron ore mining (about ten million tonnes per annum from mines near Fderik in the north) and fishing. Mines d'Or d'Akjoujt SA (MORAK), a company in which General Gold Resources NL (GGR) has 42.5 per cent equity, produces over 50 000 ounces of gold per annum, which represents the third largest export industry in the country.

Ok Tedi Mining Limited commenced construction in mid-1981 of facilities and infrastructure to mine and process gold ore at Mt Fubilan in Papua ew Guinea. Production ofgold began more or less on schedule in mid-1984 although design capacity is yet to be achieved. Due to geotechnical problems, two important items of infrastructure, hydropower and permanent tailings disposal, are not yet in place. Current low metal prices make it likely that copper facilities will be postponed.The deposit compriscs a leached gold capping overlying copper sulphide porphyry mineralisation containing significant gold and molybdenum. Mining is by open pit methods. The soft leached capping gold ore is ripped and dozed, loaded by hydraulic shovel and trucked to a dump pocket. After passing a large semi-autogenous mill of nominal capacity of I, I00 tonnes per hour, the ore is treated by the carbon-inpulp process, with a gravity circuit to recover coarse gold. The final product is 12 kg dore bullion bars.At present, all tailings are detoxified with hydrogen peroxide; after cycloning, the coarse fraction is stored, and the slime fraction discharged into the river system; expected environmental impact is acceptable. Investigations for a suitable dam site for a permanent tailings system are still underway.Peak 'I. hour power demand for Stage I is 17 MW, presently supplied by a diesel alternator power station and a 2 MW mini hydropower plant.Initial access to the base camp at Tabubil was only by air. Eventually a road was pushed through 134 km from the river port at Kiunga (where port facilities have been constructed) and a further 23 km to Mt Fubilan.Roads are constructed of compacted gravel and crushed limestone generally underlain by geofabric. Eight major steel bridges were built.The town of Tabubil has been established, including housing, airport, shops, offices, schools and all facilities.Environmental studies have been extensive and a detailed monitoring program is maintained. Ok Tedi Mining Limited is making considerable efforts to train Papua New Guineans and to foster local business.

In this paper it is recommended that pyrite is to be separated as froth from arsenopyrite by selective depression of arsenopyrite in strong alkaline medium (1), by oxidation with chlorinated lime (II), by co-use of chlorinated lime with sodium carbonate (III), and by modification with `L' reagent (know-how) without filtering to get rid of residual copper ions after Cu activation (IV). The corresponding principles of these (new) effective methods were briefly discussed. The artificial mixture (1:1) of pyrite and arsenopyrite could be successfully separated, and concentrates of pyrite containing 2.12 per cent (I), 7.00 per cent (II), 2.60 per cent (III) and 3.16 per cent (IV) arsenic with recovery of 90.9 per cent (1), 89.5 per cent (II), 89.0 per cent (III) and 81.4 per cent (IV) respectively can be obtained by only one flotation. Some effective precautions were suggested to improve the separation of arsenopyrite and pyrite (or other sulphides) by flotation.

This paper refers to the open cut mining practice developed at Western Mining Corporation's Kalgoorlie Gold Operations (K.G.O.). Mining activity was centred attwo areas, namely W.M.C.'s Siberia "Sand King" and"Missouri" open cuts plus W.M.C.'s "Great Boulder" and K.M.A.'s "Horshoe" and "Morrison -Hannan's Star" open cuts in Fimiston.Kalgoorlie Gold Operations was set up initially to look after W.M.C.'s open cut interests in and about the Kalgoorlie area. The first mine commenced was, the Sand King open cut, approx 75 km NW of Kalgoorlie. it was here that the requirement for a highly selective form of mining first became apparent.

Open cut mining in Australia is facing the greatest challenge in its history in attempting to compete not only with other operations internationally, but also with underground operations domestically. Most flat dip and shallow depth surface-mineable coal reserves have been depleted during the last two decades and new open cut operations must extract deeper coal deposits. As open cut coal mines move into deeper areas and the stripping ratios increase, the relative cost of overburden removal also increases. It therefore becomes even more important to design the mine around the optimum overburden removal scheme. The deeper mines are usually multi-seam operations with a more complex geology and with more geotechnical and hydrological problems. Deeper mines are subjected to greater problems requiring more detailed mine planning and design, such as selection of the optimum mining method and pit layout. In planning and design of such operations, the number of alternative methods which need to be considered is consequently greater.Dragline productivity and its stripping capabilities are directly affected by the selection of digging method, strip layout and pit geometry. Every mine has a unique combination of geological conditions. The operating methods that work well at one mine may not necessarily work at another site. Selection of an optimal stripping method, strip layout and pit geometry for a given dragline must be considered with respect to the geological conditions of the mine. With increasing geological complexity of Australian strip mines, it is becoming more important to use sophisticated techniques such as computerised mine planning methods to assist in optimising dragline operations.

In coal room and pillar, and pillar extraction panels, the sidewall conditions were investigated based on underground measurements and numerical simulations. Three-dimensional linear elastic models provided a useful and quick prediction of the amount of sidewall spalling. However, more complex constitutive models were required to simulate more accurately the extent of fracturing and its effect on the stress re-distribution. The input parameters of a Mohr-Coulomb model were determined by back-analysis of underground measurements, and the effect of the depth of the workings and the time dependent occcurrence of coal pillar fracturing were analyzed.

Accident prevention in industry is a task as important to the ultimate result of an undertaking as efficient machines, good tools or trained operatives. In fact, like many qther phases of industry today, "Accident Prevention" or "Safety Organisation" has developed in this century, to a degree that is now acknowledged as an integral part of industrial thought and planning. This has not always been the case, as the following snap-shot picture of the past illustrates.The Broken Hill Proprietary Company recently celebrated at Whyalla the Jubilee of the opening of the Iron Knob Tramway. On that occasion a dinner was tendered to the pioneers, and in talking to the Writer of the early days one of the old gentlemen present could not refrain from recounting some of the accidents he had seen or experienced.Several such incidents were recounted at length, after each, the old fellow would say, "An' there weren't no safety officers or compensation in them days".The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited was a pioneer of safety in Australian industry and considerable success has followed its activity in this connection; the accident rate of the steel industry now compares satisfactorily with that of any other industrial undertaking. A measure of 'the success of the safety organisation, is, that in recent years, despite extensive construction programmes at various centres, and despite a heavy labour turnover, a decreasing accident rate has been maintained. Significant improvements in the metallurgical performance at Pasminco Rosebery Mine have occurred over the last two years. Lead and silver recoveries have increased by more than ten per cent, lead concentrate grades are four per cent higher, zinc recoveries are up 1.5 per cent, and zinc concentrate grades have increased by two per cent. These impressive results have not occurred through the application of some new wonder reagent, but through the application of some fundamental metallurgical principals. The basic premise applied during this study was that to make an effective separation you must first achieve liberation. Therefore, the laboratory and plant studies examined the liberation characteristics within the lead circuit, and the impact of regrinding. The work demonstrated clearly that galena/sphalerite liberation was poor, and significantly impaired plant performance. Further, it was suggested that the application of lead regrinding of the lead scavenger concentrate and the lead first cleaner tailing would not only benefit lead metallurgy, but also improve sphalerite flotation. A similar approach was then applied to the zinc circuit. From these studies, solutions applying simple circuit changes utilising existing equipment were proposed and implemented. Further to the improvements in galena/sphalerite liberation, significant improvements in concentrate quality were achieved by reducing variation within the process. The implementation of changes in work practices negotiated in the Enterprise Agreement, employee contributions and specialist training also made a significant contribution to the unprecedented improvement in the lead and zinc flotation circuit performance. The results of these plant changes are discussed, along with the suggested scope for further improvement.

The new generation Hlsmelt« Direct Iron Ore Smelting Process is a CRA Limited technology initiative. The process development is now focussed on commercialisation. The goal is to have the first commercial vessel operating around the year 2000. The HIsmelt« Process, based on the abundantly available iron ore fines and the more readily available non-coking coals, has the potential to fundamentally change iron ore processing through the application of high intensity techniques to replace the current sinter/coke ovens/blast furnace .technologies. The process will have great potential in the rapidly growing economies of Asia where steelmaking aspirations are based around local market focussed plants. This potential can be. realised as a supplier of premium grade iron units to electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking plants or as the front end to an ore based steel mill.

Traditional exploration has been undertaken by both local and overseas experts to discover tin deposits in Indonesia over almost 300 years. Indonesia is part of a tin belt which runs from Myanmar in the north through Malaysia to Singkep, Bangka, and Belitung islands in Indonesia in the south. The discovery of alluvial tin deposits is becoming harder as the more obvious geological targets are exhausted and topographical conditions become more difficult. New approaches are required to sustain successful exploration. There are indications that tin deposits can be found at depth on-shore as well as off-shore. These deposits are found associated with tough clays. On-shore tin exploration is hampered by swampy areas, while the off-shore search is often affected by difficult sea conditions. These factors lead to increases in the cost of exploration as well as the cost of subsequent production. Tin price fluctuations and environmental issues are also of major concern in the planning of the future operation of tin mining in Indonesia.

The kinetics of chlorination of alumina and bauxite with CO/CI2 mixtures were studied in the range 300-1100°C. The temperature of prior calcination is critical in determining the reaction rates. An optimum chlorination temperature in the range 600°C-750°C was demonstrated such that there is no increase in reaction rates with increasing temperature. This lack of rate sensitivity to rising temperature is largely a function of the influence of gaseous diffusion gradients in the porous alumina together with a progressive decrease in surface area.

Stringent environmental benchmarks imposed by governments and successful legal challenges in the country of origin have changed the risk profile for all mining companies over recent years. In developing countries, however, where high government standards may not always be in place, direct community action has often made worthless substantial investments in otherwise viable mining operations. Real limitations are therefore imposed from these risks on all areas of mining activity, wherever they may be. Thus, the bar has been raised for all companies developing or operating mines. This paper argues real financial and global industry reputation benefits accrue when all known environmental risks, where practical, are managed. In response, among major international mining companies, as the industry moves towards greater global consolidation, senior management teams have increasingly adopted corporate governance standards including æTriple Bottom LineÆ (shareholder/government/community) sustainability reporting. Sustainability reporting is encouraged by improved international stockholder and financial investor perceptions by contributing to lowered social, community and geopolitical risk which lowers the cost of access to funds as well as improving staff morale and productivity. New mines must not only be primarily financially viable but must operate throughout in a sustainable way. Case studies of some recent mining operations, who have not foreseen or proactively managed major environmental risks, demonstrate the dire financial and personal implications for managers, directors and shareholders from not identifying and managing these environmental risks. Merely having a corporate policy statement on environmental standards or high level Government approvals process for a mining activity does not preclude mining operations from the risk of direct action by local populations or future adverse legal implications from risks which were perhaps identified but not mitigated effectively. Methods and processes for the identification and active management of environmental risks in the global arena are discussed to add a practical element to sustainability, based on the authors recent strategy development processes with governments and major mining houses such as BHPBillition, Rio and Xstrata. Emphasis is placed on proactive, innovative yet practical solutions which, where possible, show positive contributions firstly to the financial bottom line but also the community at large.

Felspar occurs in association with quartz in the Broken Hill lode pegmatites and is brilliant green, greenish white, and white in colour. The pegmatites occur mainly in the walls in sporadic patches, parallel to the general dip of the ore deposit. The occurrences are of no economic value.Deposits of marketable felspar occur in pegmatite in a number of localities around Broken Hill, New South Wales.The majority of these are in the form of an irregular outcrop, usually of tapering length and depth. The maximum depth of any deposit yet worked in the district is about 40 ft. The felspar is occasionally contaminated by "blows" of quartz, mica and beryl, but the two latter are profitably marketable when separated.Felspars vary in colour from pink, through grey to snow white, and the colour is not indicative of the mineral content. The largest deposit at present being worked is the Egebeck quarry, about 14 miles south of Cockburn. It is a prominent outcrop, roughly circular and about 150 ft. in diameter, covered by one to three feet of overburden.The felspar is mainly massive, but contains some cleavage planes at approximately 90°. Intrusions of quartz and mica occur in patches, but the deposit appears likely to improve in size, regularity and quality below the present working floor.COMMERCIAL USES.Commercial felspars are mainly used in the ceramic industry, for which a high-grade potash felspar is required.The dental industry requires limited amounts of soda felspar with a very low Fe20s content. The major slime forming minerals in coal seams are generally montmorillonite, illite and kaolinite, and due to the consistant trend to full seam mechanisation in New South Wales and Queensland these minerals remain in the feed to a coal preparation plant. After coming into contact with water their size degradation is very rapid, and therefore they mostly report to the fine coal cleaning section of the plant. Froth flotation, being the most effective method of beneficiating fine coal, is widely practised in these two major coal producing states of Australia. Plant experience and laboratory tests suggest that the presence of these slimes in the flotation circuit depresses the flotation of fine coal. Although the deleterious effects of slimes on the flotation behaviour of minerals is well known, the mode of their adsorption at the mineral surface has been a subject of controversy for some time. In this paper, on the basis of the surface properties of slime forming minerals and coal, a model has been put forward to explain the adsorption of slimes at the coal surface. The degree of slime coating has been examined by scanning electron microscopy. Laboratory tests have revealed that with the appropriate use of polyvalent phosphate electrolytes these slimes can be liberated from the coal surface. Just attrition and desliming are not enough to ensure complete liberation of slimes. Coal, after treatment with these electrolytes and then deslimed, floats readily with a common frother, such as MIBC. Modifications in the conventional flotation circuits have been suggested to ensure an efficient flotation of fine coal.
